Incredibly Sexy New Artwork for The Exorcist 40th Anniversary Blu-rayWarner Bros. just sent over the new artwork for their upcoming 40th Anniversary Exorcist Blu-ray, and we're pretty jazzed by it! Changing artwork for classic films can be risky, but they definitely got this one right!

From the Press Release
When The Exorcist was first released in 1973, viewers were frightened out of their wits - and literally out of their seats. Now Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Academy Award® winning director William Friedkin’s suspense masterpiece that haunted and intrigued the world with a new Blu-ray release featuring the Extended Director’s Cut and Theatrical Version with new special features and premiums ($49.99 SRP). Available October 8, just ahead of Halloween, this 40th Anniversary Edition will include two new featurettes: “Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist” and “Talk of the Devil,” as well as an excerpt from Friedkin’s book The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir.

A true cinema landmark, the theological thriller is one of the top ten box-office performers of all time. The Exorcist took 10 Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture, and won two Oscars® for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as winning for Best Sound. Subsequently, the film went on to become a multi-million dollar franchise. Directed by Friedkin (Oscar®-winner for The French Connection - Directing 1971) and written by William Peter Blatty, the film is based on his best-selling novel, which sold nearly 13 million copies domestically and was the #1 book on the New York Times Best Seller List for 57 weeks, 17 of them at #1.

Regarding the Extended Director’s Cut, Friedkin says, “After my initial cut, I took out 12 more minutes before we released it in theatres. Years later, Bill Blatty asked if I’d review some of that rejected footage (which he always felt should have remained) with an eye towards putting it back in a new version. In so doing I believe we strengthened the spiritual aspect of the film.”

Celebrated for his directorial role in this seminal film, Friedkin is still very much in the limelight. His new book, The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir, recently published by HarperCollins, extensively discusses the background and casting of The Exorcist. The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films will honor Friedkin this month with their Lifetime Achievement Award for his continually influential work in genre entertainment at this year’s Saturn Awards. In August Friedkin will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, where he will present the restored version of Warner Bros.’ Sorcerer. And Friedkin and author Blatty will attend a special 40th Anniversary screening of their film at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., on October 30. The film will also have an exclusive theatrical engagement October 31 through November 7th at the AMC Georgetown.

Synopsis
The Exorcist tells the now-famous story of a girl’s demonic possession, and a gripping fight between good and evil. Linda Blair, in a breakout role, plays Regan, a young girl who starts to exhibit strange, arcane behavior. Her mother (Ellen Burstyn, Oscarâ-winner for Best Actress Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) calls upon a priest, Father Karras (Jason Miller) to investigate. But Karras, who has a spiritual crisis of his own, is suddenly confronted with the unimaginable evil of Regan’s possession. Father Lankester Merrin (Max Von Sydow), an archeologist-priest, is called to help, and a horrific battle for her soul begins.

Special Features:

  • Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist (NEW) 40 years after his novel was published, The Exorcist author, screenwriter and producer returns to where it all began. First stop is a cabin/guest house in the hills of Encino, California, where Blatty wrote the novel. The author visits the place for the first time in 40 years and shares not only memories of writing the book, but also discusses how it inspired him. We then meet Blatty in two key and iconic locations; Georgetown University where the film was shot, and at the now-famous Exorcist steps. Throughout, Blatty reads from his novel, including an excerpt from a chilling newly published passage.
  • Talk of the Devil (NEW) – While at Georgetown University, William Peter Blatty heard about a true case of possession from Father Eugene Gallagher. At the time the film came out, the priest talked at length about exorcism, the true story and about Blatty; this footage is now available for the first time in many years. It is as revealing as it is shocking.

Jurassic Park Plot Details SurfaceThe first plot details for the upcoming installment of Jurassic Park have come to light, and though they are as of yet unconfirmed, they are pretty friggin' tasty! Read on for details, and look for the official word soon!

JoBlo cites a reliable source for the following info:

Jurassic Park 4 is set in present day Isla Nublar, now an actual theme park, as originally intended by John Hammond in the first film. It garners 10 million visitors per year and is completely safe – until it’s not. The park itself is described as very SeaWorld-esque and includes an area called the Isla Nublar Lagoon. That means underwater dinos for the first time. No indication of what kind, but there’s concept art showing one of the aquatic dinos, as part of a show, jumping out of the lagoon and eating a strung up great white shark like it was a fish for a dolphin at SeaWorld.

As part of a show, you ask? That’s right, folks, this will feature “tamed” dinos. In fact, our source indicated that the usually menacing Velociraptors (which will finally be muzzled, along with the T-Rex – until they’re not) will actually be used to help fight the threat, which begins in the form of a new dinosaur, not seen in any of the previous films (and not disclosed to us), that turns out to be much smarter than originally thought and is the main cause of havoc breaking out at the park.

So, to sum it all up, Jurassic Park 4 will take place back on Isla Nublar with a fully operational dinosaur theme park (I’m sure no expense was spared) that’s both prosperous and safe, until a new dinosaur figures out a way to wreak havoc, causing the use of the now tamed Velociraptors (and T-Rex? Unclear) as a means to fight the threat.

In coordination with the filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a yet-to-be-determined later date than originally announced, giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow had been tapped to helm the next installment in the dino-rific series. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the script.

The Rock Taking On The Terminator?

    $

    0

The Rock Taking On The Terminator? The Terminator is an ailing franchise in need of some big muscle and firepower to get it back on top were it deserves to be. Now that Paramount had gotten the rights to the series there's some very interesting talk going around to help jettison the property back into the spotlight.

According to the Examiner Terminator 5 may actually be a prequel of sorts: “Incredibly, Arnold Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family. One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination."

So if Schwarzenegger is the good guy again this time around, the question beckons... Who will be his ultimate nemesis? A source close to Annapurna Films exclusively tells Examiner Friday morning that one version of the script is being produced specifically for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Wanna talk about the ultimate showdown? This could be it, kids! Please, video gods, make this happen. We'll be in theatres with friggin' bells on!

Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures have already set Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine 3D) to script the next installment of The Terminator franchise.

    Stay tuned.

The Last of Us Turned Into a Six-Hour Movie

The Last of Us Turned Into a Six-Hour MovieThe Last of Us is now available for PS3 (read our review here). The game has such an in-depth story that it would have made a perfect movie. Well, one guy decided to make just that.

About The Last of Us Movie
Want to experience the incredible story of The Last of Us without missing out on in-game cutscenes and dialogue? Then this is the video to watch! This six-hour marathon edition has everything you need to see Joel and Ellie's story unfold without missing out on the dialogue and progression that really make the story come to life... This is somewhere between a 12+-hour walkthrough and a 90-minute "cinematics only" cut and paste movie, and I hope it succeeds in presenting the story in the way it should be experienced for those who can't play it... Here are some quick notes about how the movie works:

Like Bioshock Infinite, to get the full story experience, I think you need to see the in-game dialogue/interaction, so this movie will be longer than most of the others out there (I've seen a 9-hour movie, but that's pretty much a walkthrough; I missed a few very minimal pieces of dialogue, but certainly not 3 hours of content), but I'm hoping it's worth it... If you're looking to enjoy the story of this game with minimal compromise with regard to the story/dialogue, please watch this.

About the Last of Us Game
The Last of Us tells the story of Joel, a survivor of the savage cordyceps virus infection which has plunged the USA into a chillingly-authentic post-apocalyptic hell. He embarks on a cross-America trip with a precious cargo, Ellie, leaving the relative safety of the quarantine zone where they will encounter fierce mutated husks and crazed survivors. From the award-winning team behind Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, The Last of Us delivers a gritty, cinematic experience interspersed with genuine survival-action to deliver a compelling and unique gaming experience. In addition, The Last of Us features a brand new online multiplayer, featuring XP-levelling and in-game currency to purchase upgrades and weapons.

Unlucky Charms and Trancers 1.5 Artwork Unveiled; Charles Band Announces a Clash of Full Moon TitansCharles Band has released artwork for Unlucky Charms, his newest horror project featuring little monsters and big boobs, as well as promo art for a “lost” sequel to Trancers soon to be released. But can either of those top the announcement of a new Full Moon “Vs.” movie?

Charles Band is back in the director’s chair for the magically malicious Unlucky Charms, starring Tiffany Thornton, Seth Peterson, Charlie O'Connell, Nathan Phillips, Nikki Leigh, Alex Rose Wiesel, Masuimi Max, Mike Diva, Peter Badalamenti, Ben Woolf, and Katrina Kemp with Anna Sophia Berglund and Jeryl Prescott Sales from “The Walking Dead”.

    Synopsis:
Five beautiful girls vie for a chance to become the spokesmodel for diva DeeDee DeVille's (Jeryl Prescott Sales from "The Walking Dead") new high-end line of lingerie. The claws come out when the competition gets fierce, but when they begin to disappear one by one, they soon find that they are competing for their lives. DeeDee invokes four mythical beings - The Cyclops, The Banshee, The Hobgoblin, and the mischievous red leprechaun Farr Darrig - from an ancient charm bracelet to steal the girls' souls, but the creatures from the underworld have plans of their own. Whomever wields the power of these UNLUCKY CHARMS, beware. They're magically malicious!

You’ll find new artwork for the film below with its emphasis on cleavage and a leprechaun that looks like the red-headed stepchild of Warwick Davis’ Leprechaun. Unlucky Charms is due on home video and video-on-demand sometime next month. With a release date so soon you’d think we’d be getting a trailer as well about now.

    Unlucky Charms

Fans of the Trancers franchise might be in for a treat. Who can say for sure? I’m not quite sure what to make of this bit of news myself. Band has announced plans to soon release Trancers 1.5: City of Lost Angels, starring Tim Thomerson and Helen Hunt. Exactly what this “lost” Trancers sequel is or what it’s about remains to be seen. As of now, all we have to go on is the promotional artwork below.

Oh, and Charles Band announced that production will soon begin on Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Sharknado Syfy and Blu-ray Release Dates; The Asylum Announces 13/13/13 and The Bell Witch Hauntings

Sharknado Syfy and Blu-ray Release Dates; The Asylum Announces 13/13/13 and The Bell Witch HauntingsSeveral of you who read my Sharknado review have asked when you’ll get a chance to see this astounding motion picture about Los Angeles under siege from a hurricane, shark-infested flood waters, and tornadoes full of apex predators.

I’ll tell you when and also share some news about two new Asylum horror offerings coming this fall.

Yeah, I’m the guy who gave Sharknado a 4-1/2 out of 5 review, and I stand by every word of it. Probably the most fun I’ve had watching any movie this year. I got an advance look; you’ll get your chance on Thursday, July 11th, at 9/8 Central, when the ultimate Asylum movie premieres on Syfy. Or, if you want to wait until DVD and Blu-ray to experience Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, and John Heard contend with nature at its most amok, the film is slated for DVD and Blu-ray release on September 3rd.

    Synopsis:
When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace, and nature's deadliest killer rules sea, land, and air.

Seriously, is there a Pulitzer Prize or a Peabody Award of some kind given out for outstanding achievement in the realm of schlock? There ought to be. Writer Thunder Levin and director Anthony C. Ferrante certainly earned it for this unhinged piece of b-movie pop art.

In 2011, The Asylum gave us the apocalyptic horror of the date 11/11/11. In 2012, they gave us the demonic terror of the date 12/12/12. There is no 13th month so there’s no chance of a 13/13/13, right?

    Wrong!

We should all know by now that The Asylum plays by Asylum logic. So prepare to experience the unholy nightmare that awaits mankind on the date 13/13/13. How does that work, exactly?

    Synopsis:
For millennia, calendars have added an extra day every four years. In doing so, they violated the ancient Mayan calendar. Now we are in the 13th month of the 13th year of the new millennium, and the few who survive will battle a world of demons.

Damn those Mayans! Just when we thought we’d heard the last of them and their ancient calendar, here we go again. That’s why I always liked the Toltecs; you never hear about them trying to screw up future civilizations.

Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, and Jody Barton star in this unlikeliest of date and time-related horror flicks written and directed by James Cullen Bressack.

Since there is no such calendar date to release it around on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD like the previous Asylum dates with damnation, 13/13/13 will have to settle for the first day of October to bring about the end of the time.

Now you’d think if you were going to release a found footage ghost movie, you’d want to do so just in time for Halloween, not the week after. November 5th: That’s when The Asylum will be releasing The Bell Witch Haunting, their latest found footage flick written, directed, and starring "N/A" because it’s all 100% legit, yo.

    Synopsis:
Based on true events. The Robertson County Sheriff's Department has released footage found on the bodies of the Sawyer family's cell phones and video cameras. What was first thought to be a murder-suicide is now believed to be the return of a centuries-old demon responsible for America's most famous paranormal event.

Wait just a second. Why would you need to proclaim a movie to be “based on true events” when it’s a found footage flick of a supposedly real event? I’ve heard of movies breaking the fourth wall; I think The Asylum is about to break the fifth wall.

I recently watched a video about movie sales at an international film market that did a segment on The Asylum; did I really see promotional artwork on the wall for a movie titled Airplane vs. Volcano? Stay tuned!

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Help Raise Maggie from the DeadArnold Schwarzenegger. During his long career in films he's stopped predators, blasted countless bad guys, beheaded sorcerers, dismantled electronic killing machines from the future, and even shot a rocket at Lucifer himself! What's left for him to tackle? The living dead of course!

According to Variety, Schwarzenegger is turning to the zombie world, signing on to star in and produce Maggie, which we last reported on over a year ago.

The film is based on the Black List script by John Scott 3 and is set during a time when a “walking dead” virus has spread across the country. Schwarzenegger, who recently closed a deal to appear in the fifth Terminator, will portray the father on a journey to help his daughter come to terms with her infection as she slowly becomes a zombie. Chloe Moretz had been in negotiations last year to play the zombie lead but now is not appearing due to scheduling issues.

The film will be directed by commercial director Henry Hobson. Production will commence in the fall.

See the TV Spot for Stephen King's Doctor Sleep Before it Airs Next WeekIn case you don't already have enough reasons to watch CBS' summer series "Under the Dome," a new TV spot for Stephen King's upcoming Doctor Sleep is going to air during the premiere, but knowing how much you hate to wait, we have it right here!

Doctor Sleep is being released on September 24th, 2013.

    Synopsis:
Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America a tribe of people called "The True Knot" travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Bryan Fuller Talks Hannibal Season 2

Bryan Fuller Talks Hannibal Season 2After last night's riveting Season 1 finale, it's been hard to stop thinking about the direction in which "Hannibal" will go next year in Season 2. If you feel the same, then check out these tidbits executive producer Bryan Fuller shared with TV Guide.

The highlights of Fuller's chat with the Guide are below, but there's lots more, including how that damn ear got inside Will, so be sure to hit the link at the bottom of the page.

Jack (Laurence Fishburne) conveniently comes in after Will (Hugh Dancy) accuses Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) of all the murders. Would Jack have been swayed if he had heard Will's thoughts?
Fuller: In Season 2 Jack will be investigating those accusations. I think after Will woke up from getting shot by Jack and before he was put into the institution, he shared his theories about Hannibal. Now it's up to those characters and Hannibal Lecter to either support or deny those accusations in a properly investigated way.

Do you intend to keep Will locked up for a while?
Fuller: He will be incarcerated, and we will be dealing with all of the threads of that. We need to see all of the things happen that would happen in that scenario. Will Graham needs to go on trial for the murders that he may or may not have committed. Jack has to be brought before a review board for his participation in what happened to Will, and Hannibal, as Will's psychiatrist, is going to continue to try to help Will see the truth that Hannibal wants him to see. The ball is up in the air in so many ways for Jack and Hannibal and Will. The fun of Season 2 will be spiking those balls.

Will Dr. Chilton get his organs put back inside himself and be trying to analyze Will's mind?
Fuller: Yes. I would love to have a lot more of Raul Esparza and Dr. Frederick Chilton in Season 2. He will be a nemesis of sorts for Will in the institution.

Does Will have any allies at this point? Perhaps Alana (Caroline Dhavernas)?
Fuller: I think we'll see shifts in relationships. Will has always felt alone, and we've seen him victimized by his isolation in the first season. Now, Will has to step up and defend himself and also be much more proactive as a character because it is his life on the line. The tragedy for Will is that he allowed himself to open up and get close to Hannibal, and now he fears that that is the exact wrong person that he should have been so intimate with. Hannibal has so clearly convinced all of those around Will that Will could be capable of all of this. And Will has convinced everyone around him that he could capable of this by his own behavior.

Can Will distance himself from Hannibal, or will he have access to him as his attending psychiatrist?
Fuller: Hannibal will always want to be close to Will. He sees a great potential in Will as this pure human being, and he's seduced by Will's purity. He's attracted to it, and he's also very eager to conquer it in some way.

Is Hannibal's obsession with Will also an attempt to more fully understand himself?
Fuller: Hannibal's absolutely on a journey of self-exploration, and he's fascinated by his fascination with Will. He is curious about this change that's come over him. It's sort of like somebody who is falling in love for the first time and had never felt that was actually a possibility for them. That's a fresh, unexplored territory for Hannibal that is exciting to him and interesting to him. Maybe his ultimate downfall is his attraction and affection for Will Graham.

But for now, Hannibal is on top.
Fuller: Hannibal Lecter has won this round, certainly. But one of the exciting things moving forward with Season 2 is that Will has hit rock bottom. One of the great gifts that the universe can give somebody in a tumultuous state of mind is for them to hit rock bottom and be free. Now, Will has nothing to lose, and he will be a very dangerous dance partner for Hannibal Lecter.

“Hannibal” is based on the characters from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and was developed for television by Bryan Fuller, who also serves as writer and executive producer. In addition to Fuller, Martha De Laurentiis, Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Sara Colleton, Katie O’Connell, Elisa Roth, Sidonie Dumas, and Christophe Riandee also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Gaumont International Television, Dino De Laurentiis Company, and Living Dead Guy Productions and co-commissioned internationally by Sony Pictures Television Networks.

The new season will begin no earlier than midseason.

    B-Sides: Pumpkinhead Meets the President’s Half-Brother

B-Sides: Pumpkinhead Meets the President’s Half-BrotherMany past American Presidents have had issues with family members causing embarrassing headlines, but only one ex-President’s troublemaking half-brother can lay claim to having co-starred in and performed the title song to a Pumpkinhead movie.

While William Jefferson Clinton was serving as the 42nd President of the United States, his half-brother, nicknamed “Headache” by the Secret Service, was trying to jumpstart a showbiz career. Roger Clinton managed to parlay his lounge act into a series of small TV guest starring roles, and the nadir of his Hollywood career was playing “Mayor Bubba” in the 1994 direct-to-video sequel Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings.

In addition to his supporting role, he also crooned the film’s theme song “Just Like You” that sounds a little too mellow for a backwoods horror flick about selling your soul to Satan in order to unleash an enormous hellbeast that inflicts murderous revenge against those that have wronged you.

So, while Pumpkinhead terrorizes Ami Dolenz, Soleil Moon Frye, Hill Harper, Andrew Robinson, Linnea Quigley, and Kane Hodder, do enjoy the low soul stylings of Roger Clinton. Ya might even get a hankerin’ to drink a can of Billy Beer while doing so.

Nicolas Winding Refn Prepping a Valhalla Rising Sequel; All-Female Horror Project Still in the Works

Nicolas Winding Refn Prepping a Valhalla Rising Sequel; All-Female Horror Project Still in the WorksDanish director Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today so when we heard about a sequel to his Valhalla Rising with our new favorite Hannibal back in the lead, as well as an all-female horror project, we brought back the scoop on both for you.

While doing press for the North American premiere of Only God Forgives, Refn told The Playlist he's planning to re-team with Valhalla Rising star Mads Mikkelsen (who's currently burning up the airwaves with his incredible performance as Dr. Lecter on NBC's "Hannibal"), saying they had “talked about revisiting the [One Eye] character from Valhalla Rising again to kind of complete… because there’s a similarity between Valhalla Rising, Drive, and Only God Forgives. But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo.”

When asked how this next Valhalla Rising chapter could be a sequel set in Tokyo of all places, Refn cryptically said, “Tokyo is a world unto itself.” And exactly how does One Eye emerge from the early Viking era to modern-day Tokyo? Refn said of the film, “[It's] about the future…”

That's all well and good, but what about this women only horror movie? In a previous chat with The Playlist, Refn said of the film, called I Walk with the Dead, "Yes, that’s [on] the drawing boards; it’s looking very good." The all-female sexy horror thriller has Carey Mulligan attached. And when might it start shooting? "I have to finish the script first," Refn said, adding with regard to whether or not he already has his necessary funding, "There are... movements of events."

We'll keep our eyes and ears open for more, but in the meantime here's a reminder of what Valhalla Rising was all about:

1000 AD. For years, One Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor; and together he and Are escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight, One Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that clears only as the crew sights an unknown land. As the new world reveals its secrets and the Vikings confront their terrible and bloody fate, One Eye discovers his true self.
