Box Office Report: World War Z More Like World War $

$

Box Office Report: World War Z More Like World War $Monsters ruled the box office this weekend in a big way. The top spot belonged to the monsters of Monsters University, but nipping at their heels were the 3D PG-13 ant zombies of World War Z. How weird is it that on the small screen R-rated zombies garner huge ratings, but you have to make them bloodless PG-13 to find huge success on the big screen?

Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University was top of the class this weekend with $82 million. That was good enough to fend off Brad Pitt’s greatly troubled big screen interpretation of Max Brooks’ best seller World War Z. Despite tons of negative pre-publicity regarding the megabudget movie’s much troubled production, WWZ still landed in the #2 spot with a whopping $66 million opening weekend and another $46 million globally. It also garnered a “B+” Cinemascore. Hey, look, a horror movie general audiences actually like. They better because World War Z cost over $200 million to produce, and it's going to take more than one strong weekend to make budget.

According to Deadline, World War Z’s $66 million marks the “biggest domestic opening for an original film since Avatar”. It’s pretty telling about the dearth of originality in Hollywood when a movie based on a best-selling novel is now considered an “original” production. That proclamation baffles me. Pacific Rim is original. This Is the End is original. World War Z is an adaptation. Although, I suppose when you consider that the movie has little in common with the book outside of the title and the premise, I guess you could argue World War Z is an original movie.

Speaking of This Is the End, it dropped to 4th with $13 million. That’s a fall of only 37% from last week, indicating that word of mouth is pretty good. It’s up to $57 million thus far.

And The Purge continues to hang in there at 7th place with another $3.3 million. That brings it up to just shy of $60 million, almost 20x its production cost. This will most certainly not be the last purge.

The box office report now takes a few weeks off until the weekend of July 12th, when the internet collectively explodes at the news that Grown Ups 2 opened bigger than Pacific Rim. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but current tracking numbers for Pacific Rim are soft enough that the nightmare scenario I just described in the previous sentence could soon become a reality.

Paramount Confirms World War Z Sequel in the WorksWith World War Z scoring big at the box office, earning a very respectable $66 million in North America and $45.8 million from its first 25 foreign markets, Paramount is celebrating its victory by planning more!

THR reports that World War Z initially was envisioned as a trilogy, but those plans were shelved when the movie ran into trouble, requiring extensive reworking of the last act. Initially set to open in December 2012, the movie's release date was pushed back to June, prompting many in Hollywood to anticipate a blood bath. Given the bank the film is currently making, Paramount has revived plans for a sequel, proving yet again that the undead are truly unstoppable.

Greg Nicotero Talks Directing The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere, New Zombie Tricks, and More!

Greg Nicotero Talks Directing The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere, New Zombie Tricks, and More!Happy Monday! If you're a fan of "The Walking Dead," you know Mondays usually bring a new "Dispatch from the Set," and this week is no exception. Read on for a chat with exec producer Greg Nicotero.

Nicotero, Executive Producer and special FX Makeup Designer for AMC's "The Walking Dead," talks about directing the Season 4 premiere, new zombie tricks for Season 4, and bowling with Norman Reedus during the off-season.

Q: You directed the Season 4 premiere episode. What is it like to be back?

A: What's nice about the first episode is that they always supersize it and give you an extra day because they know that the script is going to be insanely filled with great drama and great action, and we certainly didn't skimp on anything in this one.

Q: Sounds like there's a lot going on in Season 4...

A: The story arcs and the script this season are astoundingly detailed, and every single nuance is there for a reason. It's really fascinating when you step back as a director and you deconstruct a script in your head. When you're shooting this scene because, for example, Hershel says one word, then the next cut has to feature what he's saying, that intent follows through.

Q: The weather has been really rainy in the South. How has that affected shooting?

A: As a matter of fact, one of the locations that I picked for the first episode, our first day of shooting, the place was underwater. So we literally had to scramble and pick a new location... They had Porta-Potties and all this stuff set up for where the crew was going to be, and I guess they floated away. [Laughs]

Related Story:Official "The Walking Dead" News Archive

Greg Nicotero Talks Directing The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere, New Zombie Tricks, and More!

Q: What are the challenges of directing the premiere?

A: For me, it's really about putting the ship on the right course in regards to getting all the actors to know where their characters are and giving them insight into what's coming down the pipe...

Q: What's been your favorite episode to direct thus far?

A: Each episode I love for a different reason. The first episode I did in Season 2, where Dale gets killed, is the first piece of television I had directed. And I don't think I told anyone else except Andy Lincoln, but I was scared shitless because I had one walker and this gigantic, huge, emotional episode... And then the second episode I did, 305, was so action-oriented. It was like four episodes in one because we had Rick going insane after Lori dies, then we had Michonne and Andrea's story, and then we had Merle, and then we had the arena fights, and then we had the walker pits. 305 was really, really exhausting.

Q: Do you still get nervous directing?

A: I thought I was very prepared [this year]. I storyboarded a bunch of sequences, and I had a great prep with my director of photography, and we went over the script over and over again... So I wasn't nervous until the first morning, and we were all setting up the first scene, and I looked around and thought, "Okay, now I'm nervous."

Q: When you hang out with the cast off-season, what do you for fun?

A: I went to New York and my family went with me, and we ended up spending half the time with Norman Reedus and going bowling and we went to the Empire State Building. Norman had never been the Empire State Building, and they took us up to the wee, wee top where there's like eight feet above you and the rest is just terror.

Q: What new tricks do you have in store for the walkers this year?

A: In the first episode this season, one of the guys in my crew was like, "You did every gag that you ever did in three years of 'The Walking Dead' in one episode." We had walkers. We had mummified corpses. We had puppets. We had zombie bites... There was even a couple of gags that we came up with on the fly -- there was a couple of sculptures that my guys in Los Angeles had done, and I said, "Oh yeah, that's a great walker." Where people are like, "What are the iconic walkers for Season Four going to be?" I'm like, "Well, you'll just have to see!"

Q: Did you have a favorite zombie gag from Season 3?

A: I've got to say the burned walkers in Episode 14... where Bowman comes back after Milton burns the pit. What I really wanted when we shot that sequence was to make it look like there were 15 walkers that had just melted together into one writhing mass of burnt flesh... It really made me proud.

Make a Date with All the Boys Love Mandy LaneCould it be? Has a release date finally been given to All the Boys Love Mandy Lane? It's only been waiting SEVEN LONG YEARS! See? Good things come to those who wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait some more.

Starring Amber Heard and Anson Mount, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is about a group of high-schoolers who invite Mandy Lane, “a good girl” who becomes the object of everyone’s affection after returning from summer break, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to mysteriously drop one at a time.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, from director Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), will be released on demand September 6th and in theaters October 11th – seven years after its Toronto Film Festival Midnight premiere.

According to Levine, “I am thrilled that MANDY LANE has been rescued and is back where it belongs with Harvey and Bob [Weinstein]. Hard to believe it's been seven years, but then again I’ve always perceived myself as a misunderstood artist who was light years ahead of his time, so I am thrilled the world has finally caught up. Seriously, I am incredibly proud of the film and of the hard work that my cast and collaborators put into it, and I am so happy the world will finally get a chance to see it.”

New Stalled One-Sheet Takes a Steamer on World War ZSometimes the simplest of ideas can have the greatest impact, and this fact can only be made funnier when it hits the mark at another's expense. Check out this latest one-sheet for the upcoming horror comedy Stalled!

Written by and starring Dan Palmer and directed by Christian James, Stalled can be described as Evil Dead meets Phone Booth. For more on the film, follow Stalled on Twitter (@StalledMovie).

Synopsis
It's Christmas Eve and a soon to be shit-canned maintenance gopher (Dan Palmer) is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets instead of drinking egg nog and making out with drunk receptionists at the annual office party. Unfortunately for this forlorn floor sweeper, he chooses to use the LADIES' RESTROOM the very second a ZOMBIE OUTBREAK occurs! Will he bowl us over and flush away the undead or (like in his pre-apocalypse life) simply remain...'STALLED'??
