The Dude Designs Another Would You Rather PosterHot on the heels of the Blu-ray/DVD announcement for Would You Rather, The Dude Designs has coughed up another one-sheet, adding to the already impressive canon of artwork we've seen for this flick!

From the Press Release
A philanthropic millionaire is just dying to give money to people who really need it - but his chosen recipients may just wind up dying in their pursuit of the prize. That's the chilling setup for WOULD YOU RATHER, a one-of-a-kind thriller that will leave viewers shaken when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 9, 2013, via IFC Midnight and MPI Media Group, with SRPs, respectively, of $29.98 and $24.98.

What would you do if a millionaire offered you a chance to solve all your life's problems? After the tragic death of her parents, Iris (Brittany Snow; Pitch Perfect, John Tucker Must Die) is desperate to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. When seemingly philanthropic aristocrat Shepard Lambrick (Jeffrey Combs; Re-Animator, Masters of Horror) expresses an interest in helping her by inviting her to an exclusive dinner party that offers the chance at untold riches, Iris finds herself in a group of similarly desperate individuals all looking to make some easy money.

But the guests soon find themselves trapped in Lambrick's mansion and forced to play a sadistic parlor game of Would You Rather, where one is faced with two grim, violent choices and where only the winner will get out alive. As the game progresses, Iris must decide how far she will go to save her brother - and herself.

Featuring a terrific ensemble cast that includes Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience, Entourage), John Heard (Home Alone, In the Line of Fire), Lawrence Gilliard, Jr. (Army Wives, The Walking Dead), Eddie Steeples (My Name Is Earl, Akeelah and the Bee), and Charlie Hofheimer (Mad Men), WOULD YOU RATHER is an edge-of-your-seat horror thriller that invites you over for a quiet evening of murder.

"I like the fact that WOULD YOU RATHER has no stumbling zombies, werewolves with pecs, or romantic vampires. The monsters are real people," wrote Rex Reed in the New York Observer. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter said, "Director David Guy Levy's clever exercise in torture porn manages to display as much restraint as genuine sickness... It definitely offers substantial chills for open-minded viewers."

The Conjuring: Official Set Visit Report - Part 1

The Conjuring: Official Set Visit Report - Part 1A match ignites in the dark. A trembling woman’s frail features are barely lit by its glow. We see a staircase below her descending into that blackness. The anxiety of the moment can be heard in the heavy breaths taken by our heroine.

The match burns too low and burns her, causing her to drop it, and the light flickers out. As she eases slowly into darkness, trying in vain to light her way with wooden matches, we wonder if some creature that loves the empty shadows will reveal itself... and when.

When the answer jolts you from your comfortable spot in the real world, you remember this is EXACTLY the kind of movie James Wan has perfected. The slow creeping dread, that anticipation of terror around the hallway corner, a shadow in the distance that stands... not quite right. This is his world, and The Conjuring looks to take all that he’s learned and scar you for life with it.

WARNING: THERE ARE MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

Moments later, Lili Taylor (or rather her stunt double) is in a wire rig ready to be flung about the room by malevolent forces. Patrick Wilson sets the scene: “This is sort of the meat of the movie where Lily Taylor’s character, Caroline, she’s just been pulled down the stairs. The spirit of the witch – sounds like a Rush album – is pulling her downstairs, and she’s flying around the room. A little backstory; my guy, Ed (Warren), up till this point, does not give exorcisms. He’s not a priest and that’s certainly reserved for priests. And this is the point in the movie where he has to decide; there’s really no time to wait for the word from the Vatican to assign someone to come give the exorcisms and, at this point, we come down there and she’s been thrown around the room and really is being taken hold of by this entity so then I’ve gotta give the exorcism myself.

Ron Livingston adds further details: “The house kind of has some various spirits that are attached to it that haven't left, basically. One of them in particular has taken possession of Lili (Taylor) at this point. And it has actually followed us. You know there's the question in haunted house movies, ‘Why don't they just leave?’ And in this one we do leave, and one of the things kind of attaches to her and brings her back. So we kind of run screaming in from the motel and try to get her out and take her away to the priest to perform the exorcism. But the spirit won't let her leave the house, and at that point it starts to get kinetic. She goes flying down the hallway, spins around and gets dragged down the stairs. And we run down to find her flying around and banging into things. So, pacing wise, if the movie has some build and then all hell breaks loose - you're looking at one of the moments where all hell breaks loose.

Got your attention now? We thought so. Chad Hayes, one of the film’s writers, elaborates further: “All part of the ending, yeah. It’s interesting because the point of view of the film is Lorraine Warren is a clairvoyant - she sees things other people don’t see and so she literally can - we switch to her POV all the time, and it’s awesome because everyone else is looking around, like, ‘What’d she see?’ I don’t want to give away too much, but she gets to see things that others don’t, and we get to see it as an audience from her POV. It’s really neat. It just all felt very compelling and a lot more interesting than ‘family buys the wrong house, drives up and it begins.’ And we got a chance to tell family POVs. This is really about three families - the witch family, the Perrons and the Warrens - and this collision course they’re on.

From day one, there was a push to step away from the odd, funhouse tone of Insidious and strike a more serious chord, as is fitting for any case involving Lorraine and Ed Warren, the famous paranormal investigators most known for their involvement in the events that became the film we know as The Amityville Horror. Wan remarked, “The nature of what this film is, and the fact that it’s based on people’s stories, I want to honor that as much as I possibly can and ground it in reality as much as I possibly could. The film that I want to make is a more classical chiller. If you look back at the original Amityville Horror, I think it was kind of in-your-face for the time. But if you look back at it now, it’s definitely a much more moody piece. One of the big inspirations for me on this film is the feel of that period. Still one of my favorite movies is the original The Haunting. I love that style, I love that feel and I want to take that feeling and apply it to this story.

Producer Peter Safran had his own thoughts on the genesis of the film: “It’s a precursor to Amityville and the Warrens’ experiences in Harrisville, in some ways, lead to the path to Amityville, and everybody just recognized it. It was a really interesting story, and also it was interesting to tell the story from both the investigators’ point of view and the family’s point of view because so many of these movies are simply family moves into a house, creepy stuff starts happening... and it’s not til the third act that you really get to meet the investigators who come in and resolve it. In this case we had both stories at the same time, and then they intersect early on and it brought a more human element to it.”

Ron Livingston compared the pacing of the film to “that old Hitchcock build style, but he cross-cuts it with Ed and Lorraine Warren as a way to introduce you to them. It’s two different paces. They’re doing lecture stuff with students showing films of their other cases, so you’re getting scares there and getting a condensed version of how some of their past cases have gone, so it also takes care of a lot of the exposition. Meanwhile there are seven hapless people in the house who have no idea what is going on with the audience yelling, 'NO NO NO... DON’T GO DOWN THERE!'”

The official synopsis breaks down the story further: “Based on a true story, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

Telling the story from two main viewpoints posed unique challenges for cast and crew, but Wan was more than up for the task and, bolstered by those who have worked with him on previous projects and trust in the way he crafts a film, sought to bring a level of authenticity and genuine feeling to the characters and settings. Once the cast heard the stories and read the script, they were on board 100 percent. Peter Safran comments: “Vera has embraced the Lorraine of it all in an enormous way. She and Patrick went up to Connecticut to spend time with Lorraine. They just spent hours and hours together, and I think it became very important for Vera from a personal point of view to make this really be a testament to Lorraine and what she and Ed spent their life doing. Patrick has clearly embraced it as well, but it’s different. Ed’s not alive so he’s kind of created his own version of Ed... the authority that Ed brings to the table as a former military man, but Vera... she’s really Lorraine.”

Despite the physical absence of Ed Warren for reference, Patrick Wilson was prepared to dive head long into his character: “Vera (Farmiga) and I, we both talked and we wanted to, as much as the system would allow us, swing with a big stick and make really bold characters. We didn’t really want to just be Vera and Patrick going through a contemporary horror movie either being scared, scaring people or rescuing people, so we sifted through a lot of the physical things that I could find online: crosses, pictures, rings, clothes. She was very specific in the clothes she wore. Everybody was all on the same page so you could make a character, but I think you care about it because they come with a sense of honesty and really wanting to help people out. I think there really is that sentiment that you have to go in to also. When you talk about ‘71, pre-Amityville or Internet or people editing at home, this whole supernatural world was so uncharted, so anybody that dedicated their life to wanting to help people out, it’s not like they made any money. Yes, they were interested in the occult, but I think that they genuinely wanted to help people so I think there was an honesty with them, and I think that you’ll get that, hopefully, with our performances".

Wilson continues: "I think it’s fascinating, a couple that dedicated their life to the occult, supernatural, demonology; and the guy was one of seven or eight demonologists, the only person at the time that was authorized or supported by the Vatican to give an exorcism who wasn’t a priest. He knew more about this world than most priests around the world. I don’t think most priests delved into the demons and the backstories and the hundreds of years of spirits. I don’t think anyone knew that better than Ed. He read. Everything about him, he was always reading and studying and from a very early age just really loved this world. I can latch onto somebody like that, who has that kind of passion even though it wasn’t my passion, but it’s something I can really respect. There is that kind of sentiment with Ed, of going, ‘You can’t tell me what I’ve seen.’ And trust me; you get into the demonology in some of the books that he’s written. A lot of it’s pretty far out there. It’s pretty deep and supernatural, so you’re sort of like, 'I wanna read, but the more I read, the more I (think), "Okay, let me just go for the ride." It’s tough. But when I’m Ed, I believe.

Look for Part 2 of our Set Visit tomorrow.

Exclusive - Dread Central to Host Tom Woodruff's King of Miseries on July 3rd; Trailer Premiere! In what's probably one of the coolest announcements we've ever made, Dread Central is happy to announce that we will be premiering King of Miseries, Tom Woodruff's prequel to his upcoming Fire City film, right here on Wednesday, July 3rd!

Don't want to wait? Get a taste of what's to come in the trailer below.

King of Miseries, directed by Woodruff, is a stand-alone film that will set the stage for his feature length directorial debut, Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs.

King of Miseries stars John Robinson, Stacy Haiduk, and Denesa Chan. Writing-producing team Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes, under their banner Okay By Me Productions, created a new story world called Fire City, where demons live in a fragile balance among us, but humans can’t see them for what they are. With a unique mythology, a world origin never seen before, a host of creatures, characters, and storylines, Lubocki and Hayes plan to slowly roll out their world to an avid fan base waiting for a new franchise, beginning with the online prequel King of Miseries.

The short film centers on a fortune teller in the demon world, called an interpreter of signs (Haiduk), who reads the fortune of a paranoid demon named Christopher (Robinson) and discovers he’s not telling her the full story. After forcing him to reveal he’s found a device, a chronolet, that allows its user to travel back in time, the interpreter pleads with Christopher not to use the device. Not only is it impossible for her to read the fortune of a past which hasn’t happened yet, the device poses too great a danger. Will he take her advice, or will he risk our future and his own for a demon’s chance at an untold fortune?

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando to Get a Cabin in the Woods

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando to Get a Cabin in the WoodsHaving seen and adored The Cabin in the Woods, I can honestly say that this makes a hell of a lot of sense. If any recent film was SCREAMING to be turned into a haunted attraction, it's this one, and that's exactly what Universal Orlando is doing for its 23rd Halloween Horror Nights!

We are building the cabin completely. You’re going to walk through a forest to get there. You’re going into the cabin. You’re going to go into the cube cells. We’re literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story,” the film's director, Drew Goddard, tells Zap2it. “You’re going to be in the control room when merman attacks.

We’re trying to adapt this film as best as we physically can in the context of what we have. The whole idea of the maze is to have varying creatures in it,” Universal Orlando Entertainment Team member Michael Aiello says. “In the maze, we’ve got many that were in the forefront of a lot of the scenes — the ballerina, the Sugarplum Fairy, the Hell Lord — but also too there are a couple rooms where we’re kind of featuring some of the creatures that were just on the screens in the control room of movie. And then in the finale we’ve got a couple characters that could open up from Halloweens past, our own events, because we were granted amazing permission to be able to include some of our lineage into Cabin’s lineage.

Goddard adds, “Our finale for the maze is something that we want guests to be surrounded by. There are so many amazing characters in the movie, we really wanted to end it with trying to surround the guests with as many guests as possible.

Wicked!

Ruthless Pictures Goes Against the Grain with AberrationBeing a teenager can suck, man. As I sit here typing this on my birthday of all days, I reflect on my teen years and can honestly say, "Nope, don't want those back." I mean, come on... puberty, acne, peer pressure, feverish masturbation, ghostly visions of the dead...

From the Press Release
Ruthless Pictures has picked up North American rights to teen horror film Aberration. Director Douglas Elford-Argent, who recently directed The Brazen Bull starring Michael Madsen and Rachel Hunter, created an elegantly shot film with a dose of teeth-grinding suspense.

Unable to control or understand her ghostly visions, she's increasingly witness to disturbing glimpses into the future. Someone is killing everyone around her, and she's running out of people she can trust. Can Christy uncover the truth behind a decades-old mystery before ending up the next victim?

The film stars Gwendolyn Garver (The Brazen Bull), Cal Thomas ("The O.C."), Kristian Capalik ("Cougar Town").

The deal was negotiated by Ruthless Pictures CEO Jesse Baget and Ryan Harper of Your Half Media Group, LLC.

Check Out This Early Concept Trailer for a Feature Version of The Long Last CallIf you're a fan of crazed genius John Skipp's works, you'll want to stop what you're doing and spend a few moments watching this sales trailer for The Long Last Call, an in-development horror feature based on the novel to be co-directed by Skipp and award-winning filmmaker Andrew Kasch.

Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm St. Legacy) told us of the trailer, "Amazon's horror book label 47North just re-released John Skipp's acclaimed novel The Long Last Call (review here) in trade paperback [so] we thought we'd celebrate by unleashing the teaser trailer for the in-development feature film version of this epic titty-bar nightmare. Keep in mind, this is a "proof of concept" sales trailer and has no actual footage from the feature, cuz that doesn't exist yet. What we shot was 2 minutes of mayhem that capture the vibe of the book and show how crazy this shit will play onscreen."

We say bring it on, and stay tuned!

Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Fantasia 2013: First Wave Titles Announced Including The World's End, The Conjuring, Big Bad Wolves, Cheap Thrills, Magic Magic, and More! While we here in the States are getting ready for San Diego Comic-Con, our friends to the North are prepping for the grandaddy of film fests, Fantasia, which kicks off at the same time.

Here's the first announcement of what you crazy Canucks and your guests from around the world will see there.

From the Press Release:
The Fantasia Film Festival is coming back, and coming soon. From July 18 to August 6, Montreal will be home to a showcase of over 100 feature films from around the world, along with a wealth of special events, conferences, and parties. Audiences can look forward to discovering numerous World and International premieres, as well as the Canadian debuts of some of the most acclaimed genre works from this year’s Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, Berlin, and Tribeca film festivals. The festival’s full lineup of screenings and events will be announced on July 9. For now, we are pleased to reveal a small sampling of highlights to whet proverbial whistles.

Without further ado, let’s begin… with the end.

OFFICIAL CLOSING FILM – Edgar Wright’s The World’s End (Canadian Premiere)
Fantasia 2013 will come wildly to a close on the night of August 6 with the Canadian premiere of UK filmmaker Edgar Wright’s hotly anticipated apocalyptic comedy THE WORLD’S END, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, and Martin Freeman. As Fantasia was the site of the Canadian Premieres of Wright’s landmark 2004 debut SHAUN OF THE DEAD as well as his most recent SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, we couldn’t think of a better way to close this year’s festival. Joining us in Montreal will be director Edgar Wright and select members of the cast.

SPECIAL LIVE THEATRE EVENT – Clive Barker’s A History of the Devil
Fantasia will again be delving into the realm of live theatre with a special three-night engagement of Title 66 Productions’ acclaimed adaptation of Clive Barker’s play A HISTORY OF THE DEVIL. An epic show to stage, HISTORY weaves a tale told across thousands of years over the span of a near three-hour running time. Director Jeremy Michael Segal and his team have created a macabre mounting that writhes with visual invention and primal acrobatics of performance. Black divinity will strike on August 1, 2 and 3, at Place des Arts’ Cinquième Salle.

CONJURE UP THE FRIGHT OF A LIFETIME – James Wan’s The Conjuring
Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Joey King star in James Wan’s THE CONJURING - one of the most frightening, intelligent, and well-executed supernatural horror films in recent memory. From the director of INSIDIOUS and SAW. Official Selection: Los Angeles Film Festival 2013. Part of our Opening Night festivities, this Special Screening is hosted by Actress Joey King.

A Lifetime Achievement Award for Andrzej Żuławski
For his singular vision, passion, and bravery, Fantasia is bestowing our 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award to the great Polish master Andrzej Żuławski, director of such individualistic and award-winning acts of filmmaking as POSSESSION, LA FEMME PUBLIQUE and L’AMOUR BRAQUE. A gifted and enormously unconventional talent, Zulawski has created some of the most breathtakingly unique films you will ever see. Feverishly cinematic and often controversial, Żuławski’s filmography explodes with dizzyingly evocative imagery, primal, animalistic performances and raw sexuality and emotion. His work pulverizes societal norms with surrealism, grotesquerie and above all else, honesty, ferociously buzzing with poetry and a black sense of humour. He has remained pure throughout his career, never compromising for the sake of mainstream appeal. Fantasia will give the award to Mr Żuławski at a special screening of SZAMANKA on the night of July 25. We will also be screening L’AMOUR BRAQUE as a special co-presentation with the Cinémathèque québécoise.

In conjunction with this special event, Fantasia will be co-presenting (with the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies) a rare exhibition of the work of Barbara ‘Basia’ Baranowska - best known in North America for her poster for Zulawski's Possession - the unsung hero of Polish poster art. To kick off the BASHA exhibition, leading scholar of Eastern European cult cinema Daniel Bird will give a talk on the history, styles and influence of the Polish Poster School, including rare clips and stills.

In addition, Mr Żuławski will be participating in Fantasia’s Frontières International Co-Production Market with a new project, DARK MATTER, to be produced by Marcin Wierzchosławski.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the astonishing work of Andrzej Żuławski, one-of-a-kind genius of cinema. Presented with the generous support of the Polish Film Institute.

Additional First Wave highlights at Fantasia 2013 include:

ACROSS THE RIVER
Italy - Dir: Lorenzo Bianchini
A brilliant opposition of new and old narratives, this chilling discovery from Italy is the most downright efficient atmospheric horror film you’ll see anywhere this year, haunting with a slow-building, intense crescendo approach to its atmosphere of disorientation and dread. From the director of Custodes Bestiae. World Premiere.

BIG BAD WOLVES
Israel - Dirs: Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado
Described in its official marketing as ”a brutal comedy for a mad mad mad mad world”, this gripping, genre-bending tale of vengeance and fury is one of the greatest films you will see anywhere this year. It’s an astonishingly terrific debut from former critic Mullins. World Premiere. Hosted by Writer/Director Eddie Mullins.

HALLEY
Mexico - Dir: Sebastian Hofmann
A haunting and grotesque examination of urban loneliness and emotional decay, HALLEY reinvents the conventions of the modern zombie film by treating the state of living death as a degenerative medical illness. Canadian Premiere.

IT’S ME, IT’S ME
Japan - Dir: Satoshi Miki
J-pop star Kazuya Kamenashi plays a slacker who multiplies himself until his life becomes a bizarre nightmare in this mix of off-the-wall comedy, realistic science-fiction and surreal thriller by genius filmmaker Satoshi Miki (ADRIFT IN TOKYO). Canadian Premiere. Hosted by Writer / Director Satoshi Miki.

L’AUTRE MONDE (The Otherworld)
France - Dir: Richard Stanley
The director of HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL returns with an astonishing documentary journey into life on the other side of the mirror. World Premiere. Hosted by Director / Co-Writer Richard Stanley, Co-Writer Scarlett Amaris, Composer Simon Boswell, editor Patrick Tremblay and Cinematographer Karim Hussain.

LIBRARY WARS
Japan - Dir: Shinsuke Sato
In 2019, an elite squad has to fight to save books from aggressive government censorship. Reminiscent of FAHRENHEIT 451, yet surprisingly playful, LIBRARY WARS will keep you on the edge of your seat with its epic action sequences, brilliantly crafted by Shinsuke Sato (GANTZ). Canadian Premiere. Hosted by Director Shinsuke Sato.

MAGIC MAGIC
USA - Dir: Sebastian Silva
Juno Temple and Michael Cera star in this Polanski-esque, paranoia-tinged psychological thriller that haunted all manner of psyches at Sundance and Cannes. Canadian Premiere.

When evil once more roams the halls of exploitation cinema’s most infamous high school, the demented residents of Tromaville must band together one more time to take down bad taste… and replace it with something even more foul! World Premiere. Hosted by Director Lloyd Kaufman.

THE WEIGHT
South Korea - Dir: Jeon Kyu-hwan
A hunchbacked mortician takes delicate care of corpses before they rest for eternity and encounters broken characters as strange as the funeral rituals he sees. Evocative of an especially taboo-smashing version of DELICATESSEN-era Jean-Pierre Jeunet, THE WEIGHT is a major discovery in the annals of subversive cinema. North American Premiere.

WILLOW CREEK
USA - Dir: Bobcat Goldthwait
Bobcat Goldthwait, celebrated comedian and brilliant director of such black comedy masterpieces as SHAKES THE CLOWN, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD and GOD BLESS AMERICA shifts gears and veers off into left field with this chilling, subjectively shot horror film about a couple on an exploration into all things Bigfoot who stumble onto things most unusual. Lost Buffy the Vampire Slayer Footage Surfaces; Mr. Pointy Rejoices!

Lost Buffy the Vampire Slayer Footage Surfaces; Mr. Pointy Rejoices! Here's something neat for our fellow "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fans... though it's been a long while (too long in fact) since we've seen anything new from the famed cult classic TV show (how we miss it), IGN has clued us in on quite the find.

"Jeff Pruitt, who served as stunt coordinator for Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first several seasons of the show, has given fans a pretty cool new (to us!) video to check out. Pruitt has posted a video on YouTube comprised of behind-the-scenes footage, mostly shot by Pruitt himself, during Season 2 of Buffy."

Nice! Hopefully more stuff like this will surface, and hey, Sarah Michelle and company... would it be so bad to have a reunion movie instead of the remake? A lot of fans would be happy to know where these characters are today, and sorry, but the comics aren't exactly cutting the mustard.

Exclusive: Cameron and Colin Cairnes Talk 100 Bloody Acres and More

Exclusive: Cameron and Colin Cairnes Talk 100 Bloody Acres and MoreThe hilarious and oddly heartfelt Australian horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres (review) is finally making its Stateside debut on VOD everywhere June 28th courtesy of Doppleganger Releasing.

Written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, 100 Bloody Acres stars Damon Herriman, Angus Sampson, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, Jamie Kristian and John Jarratt (Wolf Creek). The story follows the Morgan Brothers, Reg (Herriman) and Lindsay (Sampson) who are struggling to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business in motion. Their secret “recipe” for success (using dead car crash victims in their product) was a huge boon to business, but lately their supply has all but dried up until one day Reg comes across three kids stranded for a ride; thinking his problems are miraculously solved, he delivers the trio to Lindsay for ‘processing’ but of course, nothing goes according to plan for the Morgan’s or their victims.

Dread Central recently chatted with filmmaking pair Colin and Cameron about their feature film debut, what inspired their story and much more. Check out our exclusive interview below and make sure to check out 100 Bloody Acres on VOD everywhere June 27th!

Dread Central: Thanks for chatting today guys; this movie was a lot of fun. Since you’re brothers and made a story about brothers, how much did that translate into your story- minus that whole ‘chopping people up for fertilizer’ thing?

Cameron Cairnes:(Laughs) Yeah, we definitely weren’t in the fertilizer business. I think first and foremost we had wanted to write a horror movie that was sort of a ‘lost in the bush’ kind of a story. It also started off originally more of a blood and bone movie than anything but over the years while writing the script, everything just evolved more into our own voice and that’s where the comedy parts came out. Ultimately, if you spend that many years writing a story, you just want something that keeps you entertained.

Colin Cairnes:Yeah, definitely the starting off point for us was the idea of kids in peril, but once we started writing it, it grew organically. Just to give you an idea of how long we’ve been working on this- do you know the film Wolf Creek?

Dread Central: Oh yeah- it’s great.

Colin Cairnes:It is- it’s fantastic. But at the time we were writing 100 Bloody Acres, Wolf Creek was just starting to make it around to all the festivals so once we saw it, we knew that we were kind of screwed so we decided to stay true to our premise but add more of the comedic elements to the story which I think turned out for the best, really. We just had a find a nice balance between building tension and playing up the humorous elements.

Dread Central: I thought Damon and Angus were fantastic together in this; can you guys talk about bringing them aboard to play the Morgan Brothers? I’m familiar with Angus from Insidious but this was an entirely different role for him, I think.

Colin Cairnes:They are both truly gifted performers but what’s really cool is that they’re also sort of opposites, much like their characters. I think Damon had a little more of a ‘classical’ approach to his performance and Angus is a renowned improviser. He has such a gift for improv and that really added something to the film, I think.

Dread Central: So how much ended up being improvised then and how much of what we see is from the script?

Cameron Cairnes: I think there is a fair amount of both onscreen, actually. There was definitely enough in the script for them to work with and get a great handle on their characters and these relationships; everyone then just took it to an entirely new level, especially Angus.

Colin Cairnes:Yeah, because his character was sort of the grumpier brother, Angus was very method in that he would only sleep like four to five hours each night just so he could use that in his performance. We always joked that if you had to talk to Angus, it was always better to catch him early in the day because if you waited too long, you just didn’t want to be the person who had to deal with him after he’d been up for a long time (laughs).

Dread Central: So what’s coming up next for you guys then? Any more horror movies up your sleeve?

Cameron Cairnes: Oh definitely, but the next thing we’re working on right now is a crime caper with of course, lots of laughs and violence. It’s called They Shoot Hostages, Don’t They? and I think audiences will enjoy it. It’ll have lots of gore but lots of laughs and heart too.

Colin Cairnes:There’s definitely a part of us that still wants to make that serious horror film that Cam was talking about but I think making another comedy now makes the most sense. We’d definitely like to try everything eventually- who knows, maybe even a musical.

David Bowie Being Courted by NBC to Play Hannibal's Uncle; Another New Season 2 Character Revealed

David Bowie Being Courted by NBC to Play Hannibal's Uncle; Another New Season 2 Character RevealedNow this... this is some news that we find extremely exciting. According to E! News, an offer has been made by Bryan Fuller and NBC for David Bowie to appear on Season Two of "Hannibal" as a close family member of our resident serial killer.

"We have reached out to David Bowie to see if he's interested and available,"Fuller revealed to the site. "We would love for him to play Hannibal's uncle, who is a character from the literature and in the books."Fuller added, "We don't have an answer yet,"but he is hopeful Bowie can join the NBC series, which resumes production in August in Toronto.

Hannibal's uncle, Count Robert Lecter, was killed by Nazis in the books, but, "Since our timeline is a little more present, there's a little bit of J.J. Abrams-style alternate universe storytelling where he could still be alive,"Fuller explains.

Another pivotal role in Season Two will be that of Barney, an orderly at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where Will Grant (Hugh Dancy will be kept captive. "That will be some fun stunt casting,"says Fuller. "I would love to bring in Chi McBride, if he's available. There are so many great actors I would love to work with."

Not much of Season Two will be taken from the literature, according to Fuller. "We're going to see Will Graham institutionalized, and what we know from Red Dragon, the backstory that is given, which is very, very thin, explains that Will Graham was so psychologically compromised from investigating the Minnesota case that he had to be institutionalized. And that's sort of one sentence that we can do quite a bit with. As you can see from the first season, we held true to that backstory in a very faithful way, but obviously we took huge liberties in how we interpreted that one sentence. So right now, for Season Two, we are in fresh territory with a chapter that hasn't even been written by Thomas Harris. It's exciting."

“Hannibal” was developed for television by Bryan Fuller, who also serves as writer and executive producer. In addition to Fuller, Martha De Laurentiis, Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Sara Colleton, Katie O’Connell, Elisa Roth, Sidonie Dumas, and Christophe Riandee also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Gaumont International Television, Dino De Laurentiis Company, and Living Dead Guy Productions and co-commissioned internationally by Sony Pictures Television Networks.

The new season will begin no earlier than midseason.
