Tom Everett Scott and Ryan Merriman Talk Independence Daysaster's Action Scenes, Playing the President, and More

Tom Everett Scott and Ryan Merriman Talk Independence Daysaster's Action Scenes, Playing the President, and MoreOn June 27th Syfy aired Independence Daysaster, with an encore scheduled for August 8th; and along with the film's trailer, we have the highlights of a recent Q&A with co-stars Tom Everett Scott and Ryan Merriman.

As a somewhat interesting side story, fans of Syfy Original Movies (yes, they're out there) took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the network for moving the film to Thursday from its usual Saturday night timeslot, opting to DVR it and watch it together en masse on the 29th instead. So many did, in fact, that #syfydaysaster was a trending Twitter topic! Huzzah! Power to the people!

Now, on with the Q&A.

Q: Can you two talk about filming the different action scenes?

Tom Everett Scott: It’s interesting when you have to pretend that there are things flying around and chasing you, but you always have to do the same kind of stuff [anyway], you know? It’s pretty exciting. I thought that, Ryan, you probably had more to do than I did in terms of action, right?

Ryan Merriman: Yes, I think a lot of yours was driving, right? I don’t know how many times I dove and grabbed somebody to save them, but that was fun. And it was the first time I got to do some driving. It was nothing crazy, but we were doing a lot of kind of fast driving, swerving in and out. I got to drive a fire truck.

But, yes, they did a lot with the camera and foam cannons and a lot with wires and stuff. So everybody got a little piece but, yes, me and Tom didn’t get to do too much rolling around, getting crazy.

Q: So, Tom, in the film you get to give one of those big Presidential rally speeches and everyone’s familiar with Bill Pullman’s iconic speech in Independence Day. How did you go about making that your own?

Tom Everett Scott: You know, it’s really not a very interesting story. I rehearsed in my hotel room, and when I got on the set, we had maybe 15 minutes at the most to shoot it because we were running out of sunlight and the pressure was on.

And it’s just a matter of being able to memorize. Ever since I had to memorize the 50 states and their capitals in sixth grade, I’ve known that I’ve had this gift. And so I just rattled it off and I’m just lucky that it actually went well.

Q: And your character, he gets lots of these fun reactions as people realize they’re standing in front of the President. Did they ever happen to either of you guys in real life? When fans recognize you, do you get this weird reaction from people?

Ryan Merriman: Yes, though nothing like the President. I don’t think we ever pull that much respect, but I get some squeals and a free beer every once in a while.

Tom Everett Scott: My friends are the ones that usually notice people recognizing me. I don’t usually notice.

Q: For Tom, how did you go about preparing to play the President of the United States, especially in such a disaster type scenario?

Tom Everett Scott: I don’t know; I have no idea. It’s not even interesting. I didn’t do any ride-alongs, right, so... (laughs) I don’t know; it’s play pretend. It’s like what I’ve been doing with the kids in my neighborhood since I was a little kid - just pretend. I don’t know how I got this job.

Q: And Ryan? How did you prepare?

Ryan Merriman: I’m from Oklahoma; [we had a] very big Midwest city fire department, one of the most prestigious fire departments in Oklahoma, and I actually have three or four buddies that I grew up with that are firemen. And we have a vo-tech that you can join and go to school early. It’s kind of like sheriff’s department, fire department or become a homebuilder when you’re from Choctaw, Oklahoma.

So I had a lot of experience just from my friends and stuff like that. But the script really was written very well for me… the interactions with Tom and the kids. It was more about my character in the situations. It wasn’t, like, a lot of fireman talk. If you’ve seen the film, you know it wasn’t really about that, but I guess I was kind of lucky because I grew up around it.

Q: What were the most difficult parts to shoot?

Ryan Merriman: For me it was just imagining all the exploding [stuff] and the ships flying over and to visualize all of that against a blue sky or against a field that is perfectly tranquil and beautiful. You want to make your reactions as organic and real as you can, but it’s a fine line. You've just got to really trust the cameraman and the director and what they’re trying to really make it look like I guess.

That was the hardest part - and the drive every morning. I don’t ever want to set my alarm clock for a 4:00 a.m. wake-up again; I think that’s unnatural. No one should have to wake up before 5:00.

Q: Had you done a lot of green screen before?

Ryan Merriman: No, other than Final Destination 3. That was quite a bit of green screen, but that was more like the surroundings, you know what I mean? We were actually on the roller coaster or acting with each other, but our surroundings were all being altered where this was actually acting to nothing.

Q: Are either of you fans of the Will Smith version, and did you think about that when you were going to make this?

Ryan Merriman: Oh, yes, that’s what I tell people; I’m like, "Okay, listen; it’s called Independence Daysaster," and they’re like, "What?" I say, "Yes, but I’m kind of like the white Will Smith in this one. You know, I get to save the world; I’m a firefighter. I love that movie!" I love that character. He was obviously a little cockier, got to have a little bit more fun, but yes, I love the premise, and it’s a fun sit down and have a good time [popcorn flick]. It’s a good movie.

Tom Everett Scott: Yes, [we were] just watching the trailer with all the finished effects and everything, and it looks great. It looks amazing. I still haven’t seen the whole film yet, but… we look like a big budget movie. I’m pretty impressed.

Ryan Merriman: I think we had like a week of prep and three weeks of shooting or something like that. It was crazy.

Tom Everett Scott: Yes, but we worked it out.

In Independence Daysaster, an alien invasion cripples America’s conventional defense forces. When the President’s helicopter is shot down, his brother (a small-town hero) and a renegade scientist must find the aliens’ weakness and defeat them.

Independence Daysaster stars Ryan Merriman (Final Destination 3), Tom Everett Scott ("Southland"), Emily Holmes (Snakes on a Plane), and Andrea Brooks ("Supernatural"). Independence Daysaster , a production of Cinetel Films, was directed by
W.D. Hogan.

Pacific Rim

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Two New One-Sheets for The Conspiracy Start BeefingAlrighty, kids! On tap right now are two, count 'em, two new one-sheets for The Conspiracy (review here) - one American and one ugly. Don't believe us? Then see for yourselves. Or don't and just tell us that you did. It's the only way to be sure. Or is it?

From the Press Release
XLrator Media has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the political thriller THE CONSPIRACY, written and directed by Christopher MacBride and produced by Lee Kim.

“Christopher’s riveting film explores the fascinating world of the Illuminati, conspiracy theorists and secret societies. THE CONSPIRACY is a cinematic thrill-ride that challenges our notion of what is ‘truth’ and reveals those shadowy forces that will do anything to control it,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

When two young filmmakers (played by Aaron Poole and Jim Gilbert) select a crazed conspiracy theorist as the subject of their new movie, they have no idea the terrifying peril they will put themselves in. When the man disappears without a trace, the filmmakers begin an obsessive quest to uncover the truth that will lead them to an ancient and dangerous secret society. A meticulously researched thriller based on real conspiracy theories, THE CONSPIRACY blurs the line between fact and fiction, news and propaganda.

The film was inspired by actual conspiracy theories, notably those surrounding the Bohemian Club and the Bilderberg Group, both secretive organizations closed to the public and made up of a who’s who of power players in international politics and business.

New Late Phases Image Comes Crashing Through the DoorYa see, the thing about werewolves? They're just uncultured, man. I mean, they don't even have the friggin' common courtesy to use a door in the correct fashion. Case in point: this latest still from Late Phases which finds its own exit.

From the Press Release
Principal photography has commenced on Adrian Garcia Bogliano's highly anticipated feature LATE PHASES. Shooting is currently under way in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York.

Several cast additions have also been announced. Set to star alongside Nick Damici (Stake Land, Premium Rush, We Are What We Are) is Cheap Thrills star Ethan Embry along with Erin Cummings ("Spartacus") and Lance Guest (Halloween II, The Last Starfighter). Tom Noonan (The House of the Devil, AMC's "Hell on Wheels") is the latest genre favorite to join the cast.

Bogliano has assembled an ensemble of supporting players plucked from a gamut of classic films: Tina Louise (Stepford Wives), Karen Lynn Gorney (Saturday Night Fever), Caitlin O'Hearney (Wolfen) and Rutanya Alda (The Fury, The Deer Hunter).

From the director of Penumbra and Here Comes the Devil, LATE PHASES is Adrian Garcia Bogliano's first English language feature. Written by Eric J. Stolze, the film will tell the story of Ambrose McKinley, a cantankerous blind vet who moves into a retirement community only to learn the residents there have been dying, not from old age, but from dog attacks. After surviving his own encounter with a canine one night, Ambrose comes to believe the assailants are much more than mere dogs...

MPI's Dark Sky Films is co-producing LATE PHASES with Zak Zeman's Site B Productions, while Larry Fessenden and Brent Kunkle will produce for Glass Eye Pix.

The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

The Seen and The Unseen - Man Discovers Fossilized Bigfoot Head

The Seen and The Unseen - Man Discovers Fossilized Bigfoot HeadReaders of the Seen and The Unseen know that I love the “Squatch.” How can you not? Squatches are an icon for all things mysterious and unexplained. In America Bigfoot is our biggest collective “folklore” story that continues to grow.

Hundreds of people scour the woods trying to find that big, lovable biped, and some of them spot something “large, hairy and smelly” (and no, its not the big fat guy in a thong at the beach). All of us want to see a live one, whole and in front of us.

Come on, tell me you wouldn’t be excited if somehow it was proved that Bigfoot exists.

Imagine my interest when I read this article in The Business Standard (wait, what?). Todd May, a private investigator from Utah, found a huge, ape-like skull buried in the desert. He dug it up and announced his findings to the press.

Excitement building… could this be it? How is Mr. May sure? Did he consult a fossil expert? Take it to a university? He saw a Bigfoot once. Cough. *Scratching elbow; looking away.* Yeah, maybe not. Stay tuned for images.

Say Hello to Your New Hero... Super Zero

Say Hello to Your New Hero... Super ZeroNot every hero is going to show up at the scene of the crime with six-pack abs flashing a pearly smile in a stunning outfit. Sometimes they're toting McDonald's like the dude who saved the three Cleveland kidnap victims. Throwing away all preconceived notions you have of heroes, meet Super Zero.

This project from writer/director Mitch Cohen is in the very early stages of development, but we loved the idea so much we had to share it with you. It's the story of Josh Hersberg, a 19-year-old engineering genius who is terminally ill with brain cancer. Josh finds himself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, but luckily, because of that brain cancer, the zombies don't register him as prey. Talk about finding a silver lining to any cloud.

Read on for more info directly from Cohen as well as a promo video.

    Mitch Cohen Discusses Super Zero
Super Zero is a film for the average, the eccentric, and the powerless. No matter how much you might think you'll never have your moment to shine, anything can happen, and the future tends to arrive unannounced. With a unique balance of high concept sci-fi/horror, awesome action, and irreverent comedy, Super Zero is an "Epic Win" for those who tend to lose.

THE CORE STORY:At the heart of Super Zero lies a simple universal theme. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." The film follows 19-year-old engineering prodigy Josh Hershberg, an overweight, introverted, and terminally ill kid who has given up hope that he matters to the world. As Josh contemplates what future, if any, is worth looking forward to, a zombie apocalypse breaks out and quickly ravages the planet. Josh suffers from a rare form of brain cancer. For some reason this tricks the zombies into sensing he's already dead, and they simply ignore him. As the world crumbles around him, Josh takes advantage of his condition. He utilizes his engineering expertise to craft bad-ass weapons and obliterate the undead in order to save the rest of humanity. Think of Josh as a cross between Leonardo da Vinci and 'Lardass' from Stand By Me.

Unlike most characters in films, Josh isn't asked to change who he is. He's the same shy, geek-culture lover he's always been. He's just like so many of us, a good person who tries hard but has never been given the platform to excel. But since the world is flipped upside down, he now possesses 'God Mode' and is the baddest Mo-Fo around.

THE APOCALYPSE:As a result of unprecedented events, the world's water supply is vanishing. Luckily, the Mars rover has discovered a massive untapped reservoir under the Red Planet's surface. A sample of that liquid is on its way back home to be studied when the rocket carrying the payload crashes while re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Society quickly learns this water is not our salvation but instead carries a horrific microbe that infects the population.

WHAT WOULD INSPIRE SUCH AN INSANE PREMISE?My job is an extension of my passion for sci-fi, horror, gaming, and comics. I love worlds that contain the awesome and the badass as much as the funny and the ridiculous. There's a place for all of it in the characters and stories I cherish. Specifically for Super Zero, I love stories that deal with the end of the world because done right, you can bend reality without breaking believability. As a filmmaker, making extraordinary circumstances seem plausible is a really fun sandbox to play in. Simply building the promise of that world is not enough for me. What if I could tell a great personal story within that construct? This was my goal: to write an entertaining, larger than life tale but keep it grounded with a compelling, character-driven narrative. If I could do that, then I was confident this could be a special project that people could get behind and champion.
