Momentum Pictures, an Alliance Films company, today announced that it has acquired distribution rights in the U.K. to writer-director Richard Raaphorst’s horror film FRANKENSTEIN’S ARMY. The movie, currently shooting in Europe, is a co-production of MPI/Dark Sky Films, Los Angeles-based XYZ Films and Pellicola of Amsterdam.

The presale of British rights to FRANKENSTEIN’S ARMY was negotiated by Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films and Robert Walak of Momentum, the British distribution subsidiary of Montreal-based Alliance Films. MPI and XYZ are handling international sales on the film.

XYZ Films just came off of producing the international action film THE RAID, a Sony Pictures Classics release on March 23, which is attracting praise on the heels of winning the audience award at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and a successful U.S. premiere at Sundance.

Momentum Pictures, one of the U.K.’s preeminent independent distributors, has released such acclaimed hits as The King’s Speech, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Troll Hunter, Let the Right One In and will soon release the The Woman in Black and The Raid.

Filming in Prague, FRANKENSTEIN’S ARMY marks the feature debut of Dutch director Richard Raaphorst, whose award winning Worst Case Scenario shorts catapulted him into popularity among horror fans worldwide.

Now, director Raaphorst brings his visionary skills to this new horror movie, where he has hit on a unique and bold premise. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from a combination of the body parts of their fallen comrades, weapons and machinery – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

FRANKENSTEIN’S ARMY is the latest addition to MPI/Dark Sky Films acclaimed original horror productions. The company was also behind highly praised genre films such as Ti West’s The House of the Devil , Adam Green’s Hatchet II, Jim Mickle’s Stake Land and West’s latest, The Innkeepers.

Audiences at this year’s Film4 FrightFest event at the Glasgow Film Festival are in for a treat as no less than six directors will be attending.

One of the most eagerly anticipated movies in the Film4 FrightFest Glasgow line-up is THE RAID. This action film to end all action films is virtually guaranteed to blow the roof off the Glasgow Film Theatre with its ramped up sequences of super-exhilaration and has already been snapped up for a major Hollywood remake. So we are thrilled to welcome Welshman director Gareth Evans to Scotland, via his home in Indonesia, to discuss all things Glock and roll and star Iko Uwais.

CRAWL director Paul China and his producer brother Ben China are traveling from Australia to share the excitement their superbly slow-burning thriller is currently generating across the globe.

Another set of brothers will be arriving from Rome to present L’ARRIVO DI WANG/THE ARRIVAL OF WANG. Antonio and Marco Manetti, collectively known as the Manetti bros. have become a major force in Italian fantasy over the past few years with such movies as ZORA THE VAMPIRE and THE 17th FLOOR. Their wonderful slice of playful sci-fi will reveal in no uncertain times why they have been asked to direct the remake of STAGE FRIGHT and a sequel to TORSO.

From Los Angeles comes Padraig Reynolds, director of the shocker fantasy RITES OF SPRING, who will be talking about rising horror star AJ Bowen and why he’s thanked on Ti West’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL.

Another key Italian figurehead, who is traveling from Rome to join us, is SHADOW man Federico Zampaglione. The Italian Rob Zombie is bringing over the opening sequence of his new giallo horror TULPA to show in public for the very first time. This is a world premiere from the lead singer of the Italian rock band Tiromancino you will not want to miss.

Festival co-director Alan Jones said: “We know it’s important to our audience that they meet the talent behind the terror, and it’s that respectful interaction that makes FrightFest extra special within the fan community”.

The UK’s favourite horror fantasy festival returns to its second home at the Glasgow Film Festival for the 7th year from Friday, February 24, to Saturday, February 25. Eleven new must-see genre titles will be screened, ten of which are UK premieres.

The Tim Burton Exhibit is headed to France, where La Cinematheque Francaise created an event poster showing off more of Johnny Depp as the nefarious Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows. Check it out!

Synopsis

A new clip from the next episode of ABC's "The River" has made its way online, and we've scooped it up for you. The show, which has been met with mixed reaction, is still in its infancy so it's too early to call just how successful it's poised to be.

"The River" stars Bruce Greenwood, Leslie Hope, and Joe Anderson. Jeff Galfer and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the ABC Studios television project produced by Oren Peli and his Paranormal Activity franchise collaborators Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. The pilot episode was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Orphan, House of Wax).

When the whole crew of the Magus goes blind due to spores from a tree, lone holdout AJ will have to overcome his most paralyzing fear to find a cure before the blindness becomes permanent. Meanwhile, the local Morcego tribe stalks the crew and judges whether they are worthy to stay in the jungle. If they are deemed unworthy, the consequences could be fatal.

According to New York Magazine's Vulture, Warner Bros. is in talks with Russell Crowe about starring in Harker, a reimagining of Bram Stoker’s Dracula that's being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. It tells the vampire story from the point of view of Jonathan Harker, who — instead of his traditional role as a lawyer — is now a Scotland Yard detective investigating the Count's string of grisly murders in England.

The project (co-written by Lee Shipman and Vulture contributing vampire expert Brian McGreevy) began gathering steam at Warner Bros. around this time last year, when director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Orphan) became attached.

The main story mode in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is part of the ‘Night Springs’ TV show fiction and offers an exaggerated pulp action adventure where the horrors of reality have the all too easy habit of coming true. On April 17th the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2 will be available for Xbox 360, and two brand new trailers have been released to give you some insight into the game from the developers as well as a first glimpse at the Enhanced Edition. Read on for details!

The game’s new intro uses spectacular visuals to depict an important event in the Witcher universe – the assassination of King Demavend during a cruise along the Pontar River. The intro was created by forty artists from Platige Image, including BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Tomasz Bagiński.

The intro is one of many new features being added to the Enhanced Edition of the award-winning game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The Xbox version of the game will hit store shelves on 17 April 2012. Robert Kirkman, creator and writer of Image/Skybound's hit comic The Walking Dead and writer/executive producer on the international hit television show based upon it, has joined forces with Maryland-based Diamond Select Toys, who will handle the toy license. DST has a 13-year-long history of producing quality toys and collectibles, many based on established comic book and horror properties, and is happy to be able to bring the book's well developed characters and gruesome zombies to three-dimensional life as a line of Minimates and figural banks.

Skybound is Kirkman's imprint at Image Comics, where Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard continue to produce the top-selling graphic novels in the country with The Walking Dead. It isn't often, but when opportunities like this come along, we wish we lived closer to New York City. Carrie has returned to the stage in a newly revised Off-Broadway production that began January 31, and to help make up for the fact that many of us won't be able to see it, we have a trio of stills to share.

Playbill provided the photos, which feature Molly Ranson in the title role, opposite Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie as her religiously fanatical mother, Margaret White.

Stafford Arima helms the latest incarnation of the pop musical that has been retooled by the original writers, who have refined the focus of the story, including lyric rewrites and several new songs. Carrie has a score by Academy Award winner Michael Gore and Academy Award-winning lyricist Dean Pitchford and a book by original film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen. It officially opens March 1st and will run through March 25th at MCC Theater's Lucille Lortel Theatre, 121 Christopher Street.

Arima told Playbill, "It was really important for us, when we approached coming back to Carrie and reinventing it for 2012, that we took a very hard look at making sure that we were making this presentation, making this story, making this narrative, its unique own self – we weren't putting the novel on the stage, or putting the movie on the stage – that we were bringing to life Carrie in a theatrical way."

Mazzie added that fans of the original Broadway production, who are familiar with rare live audio recordings, will hear the songs in a whole new way. Much of the material originally written for the characters Carrie and Margaret remains intact.

Ranson also pointed out the timeliness of the story. "It's especially relevant now, more than ever, with all of the bullying that's coming to the forefront of our consciousness in our nation," she said. "We're hearing this in the media all the time about these kids taking drastic measures. Now I think it's a really great time to be doing it."

The cast also features Christy Altomare as Sue Snell, Carmen Cusack as gym teacher Lynn Gardner, Jeanna de Waal as Chris Hargensen, Derek Klena as Tommy Ross, Ben Thompson as Billy Nolan, Wayne Wilcox as Mr. Stephens, Corey Boardman as George, Blair Goldberg as Norma, F. This latest horror anthology features segments from directors Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, two of whom were part of the YouTube sensations known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Magnolia Pictures' genre label Magnet Releasing picked up US and Canadian rights during Sundance with an eye toward a fall theatrical release.

Synopsis

We've seen some extremely cool packaging for DVD and/or Blu-ray releases over the years, but we have to say that the case designed by McFarlane Toys for "The Walking Dead" Season 2 Special Edition Blu-ray pretty much takes the cake.

Here's what MTV Geek learned about the case:

Based on an actual television zombie bust designed by Emmy™ Award-winning Special Effects Make-up Supervisor and Co-Executive Producer Greg Nicotero and KNB EFX Group, the Special Edition Blu-ray will be distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The prototype will be featured at the McFarlane Toys booth during Toy Fair, along with a number of other zombie-related goodies.

When compared to the Blu-ray packaging hidden in the neck, the head isn't quite life-size, but let's not nitpick. As soon as pre-orders are available, you can be sure we'll be getting one for the Dread Central offices! Hit up the below link to see more from every angle.

Toy Fair 2012 runs February 12-15 in New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, but you many have noticed that we've gotten a bit of a jump on things. On tap for you now we have a look at JAKKS Pacific's "The Walking Dead" Deluxe TV Game and its S.L.U.G. Zombies line.

Rachel Federoff of Bravo's "Millionaire Matchmaker" sets up men and women in hopes that they can live long, happy, healthy lives together. But she also has a darker side and for Valentine's Day this year is offering some tips for enjoying the holiday with your zombie boyfriend.

We recently told you about Lynn Messina's book The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies as well as her blog with all kinds of tips for dating the undead. Messina has now recruited Federoff's (pictured right) assistance to give some undead Valentine's Day advice.

Girls, as a matchmaker I’ve noticed a trend in our men acting like, well, to put it bluntly, zombies. So I’ve been brushing up on these brain-eating, grunting, flesh-tearing, slow-moving creatures, and if you’re going to date one, you best do it right. I have the perfect tips for a perfect Valentine’s Day with your putrid and hunky zombie fellow.

Dress to impress and avoid a mess: Time to break out that little black silk dress because you want him to put down the brains and take notice how smoking hot you look. Why silk? Well, let’s just say this dinner date won’t be a clean one and better to have the blood and brain bits slip and slide right off than spend hundreds at the dry cleaners from suede or linen.

The two-drink maximum overdrive: On your mark, get set, drive! Girls, your zombie has the coordination of Lindsay Lohan on a good day. So stay sober, as you are the designated driver for this romantic date. Let’s face it—he’s killed enough, and drinking and driving isn’t an option.

Light his fire, not the house: Girls, if you are planning the date and have set up a nice, romantic dinner at home of Brains Parmesan à la candlelight, here’s a tip—ditch the candles! Zombies, well, being brainless, have no concept of fire and therefore will end up burning themselves, you, and the whole neighborhood! Try a nice setup of multicolored glow sticks: Zombies look great when they glow!

Stop and smell the roses: Everyone knows that flowers are a huge hit on Valentine’s Day, and roses, with their glorious scent, are the perfect thing for masking your zombie’s unfortunate perfume of Eau de Rotting Flesh. Take the rose petals and toss them in the car, the house, his body. Get Hansel and Gretel and trail them everywhere you both go for a wonderful smelling evening of romance.

Get packing: Now, normally I say single girls should not travel in packs. However, when it comes to caching that oh-so-gore-tastic zombie guy, going out with a girl posse is key. Zombies always travel in herds so best bring your own so you can share with the rest of the class. Just make sure you make eye contact and give him the five-second flirt. If he grunts at you and comes charging, he’s a keeper!

Girls, follow these tips, and you’re sure to have the most romantic, safe and stress-free Valentine’s Day ever. Zombies can be romantic, too. They just need a little nudge every now and then!
