S.H.O.O.T. First Delivers Atheists and Action in an All-New AdventureJustin Aclin and Nicolas Daniel Selma take aim at the supernatural in S.H.O.O.T. First, an all-new big-action, big-ideas creator-owned mini-series from Dark Horse Comics coming this fall.

Synopsis:
The Secular Humanist Occult Obliteration Taskforce uses the power of their own disbelief (as filtered through sci-fi weaponry) to protect humanity from supernatural creatures that seek to do us harm… but for S.H.O.O.T. that means demons, angels, and everything in-between.

Original, irreverent, and sure-to-be controversial - S.H.O.O.T. First promises sci-fi action in the Dark Horse tradition with a bold new twist!

"S.H.O.O.T. First is the most personal story and the most epic story I've ever written. It's about how we deal with the loss of faith; plus it's got crazy sci-fi action and a robot arm-wrestling a demon,” says writer Justin Aclin (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Twisted ToyFare Theatre).

“If you are into angels and demons, weird looking creatures, or just big guns, S.H.O.O.T First will totally blow your heads off,"adds artist Nicolas Selma (Tomb Raider: The Beginning).

“I'm so excited by the tremendous work that Nicolas Selma is doing on these issues, and I couldn't be more proud to be publishing my first creator-owned miniseries through Dark Horse Comics, which has been where comics' finest creators bring their greatest creations for decades,"adds Aclin.

"It was incredible for me to cooperate with Justin on this great project,” says Selma. “My childhood dreams are coming true!”

S.H.O.O.T. First #1 (of 4) will be in comic shops everywhere October 16th.

Director Colin Trevorrow Talks Jurassic Park 4

Director Colin Trevorrow Talks Jurassic Park 4Ever since Universal pushed back production on the fourth Jurassic Park flick, everyone's been wondering if the production was in trouble or if it was just a business as usual type move. In a recent interview with Schmoes Know, director Colin Trevorrow spoke about the project.

"It's incredible to have Steven [Spielberg], who's done this for decades and has such an incredible filmic knowledge and just understands the language of story in a way that for us is very refreshing," says Trevorrow. "It's not like getting notes from a studio executive; it's really just trying to crack this and make it the best it can be."

"We don't want to create a new scoop here, but we definitely want to honor what came before us," Trevorrow continues. "We are very aware of how much a certain generation especially cares about this movie, and we talk about it all the time, and really the conversation is: It’s not about us, it’s not about our careers, it’s 'How do we make something that can stand with the first one?'."

In coordination with the filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a yet-to-be-determined later date than originally announced, giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow had been tapped to helm the next installment in the dino-rific series. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the script.

Fantasia 2013: Second Wave Titles Announced Including Miike's Shield of Straw, You're Next, Big Ass Spider!, Plus One, Missionary, and MoreThe full Fantasia 2013 lineup will be announced next Tuesday, July 9th, but in the meantime we have the second wave of titles to share, and per usual, it's a doozy!

    From the Press Release:
Following last week’s first wave of programming announcements, the Fantasia International Film Festival is proud to unveil several additional highlights to warm you up for our July 9th Press Conference, where we’ll be unveiling of our full 120+ film lineup. The festival runs from July 18 to August 6.

OFFICIAL OPENING NIGHT FILM – Takashi Miike’s SHIELD OF STRAW (North American Premiere)
Hot off its screening in official completion at the Cannes Film Festival, Takashi Miike’s riveting crime thriller SHIELD OF STRAW will be kicking off Fantasia’s 2013 edition with its first screening on the North American continent. SHIELD OF STRAW stars Takao Osawa, Nanako Matsushima, and Tatsuya Fujiwara. Fantasia’s 1997 screening of FUDOH marked the first time that a Miike film had ever been shown in North America, making it all the more joyous to open our 2013 festival with his latest work.

Extensive Artist Talks with Bryan Singer and Simon Boswell
Fantasia will once again offer audiences the opportunity to participate in illuminating artist talks, expositions, and panels, with a chief highlight being “Rated X - A Night with Bryan Singer”! Here, we’ll see the gifted filmmaker behind the X-MEN films, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, JACK THE GIANT SLAYER, VALKYRIE, SUPERMAN RETURNS, PUBLIC ACCESS, and the chilling APT PUPIL, sit down for an extensive hour-long discussion with moderator Tony Timpone and the audience in a special evening of superbeings, superstars, and one superfilmmaker.

“Simon Boswell: A Talk on Film Scoring” brings the brilliant UK composer to the stage with moderator Chris Alexander for a career-spanning talk about his adventures in film scoring for some of genre cinema’s most individualistic filmmaking talents, including Alejandro Jodorowsky, Alex de la Iglesia, Dario Argento, Danny Boyle, Michele Soavi, Richard Stanley, Clive Barker, and Lamberto Bava.

Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett bare it all in Joe Swanberg’s 24 EXPOSURES (World Premiere)
Fantasia will unveil the world premiere screening of mumblecore icon Joe Swanberg’s recently completed 24 EXPOSURES as part of its Camera Lucida section. The feature stars filmmaker Adam Wingard (who, at 19, premiered his first film, HOME SICK, at Fantasia) and his constant collaborator Simon Barrett, the director/screenwriter duo behind YOU’RE NEXT and A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE.

Wingard, a gifted cinematographer who also lensed Swanberg’s SILVER BULLETS, plays a fetish photographer whose models begin to turn up dead, with Barrett portraying a melancholic cop tasked with investigating him. Swanberg, director of DRINKING BUDDIES and ALEXANDER THE LAST, previously collaborated with Wingard and Barrett on AUTOEROTIC and the anthology horror hit V/H/S. As an actor, Swanberg also collaborated with the filmmakers several times, playing lead roles in A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE and YOU’RE NEXT.

On a related note, Fantasia 2013 will showcase the Quebec Premiere of Wingard’s brilliant YOU’RE NEXT the night before 24 EXPOSURES, offering our audience the rare chance to observe the flipping of an actor/director/screenwriter creative relationship from one night to the next.

Joe Swanberg will host both screenings.

Quebec Cinema Leads with a Cutting Edge
Recognized by the international film community as having a filmmaking culture that warrants close attention, Québec Cinema will be uniquely celebrated at this year's Fantasia.

The festival is pleased to be hosting the world premiere of Robert Morin's hotly anticipated LES 4 SOLDATS (The Four Soldiers). A key figure of Quebec’s independent cinema scene, Morin had made such classics as QUICONQUE MEURT, MEURT À DOULEUR, REQUIEM POUR UN BEAU SANS-CŒUR and the unforgettable YES SIR! MADAME… LES 4 SOLDATS, sees the gifted iconoclast venturing into science-fiction with a post-apocalyptic tale following four people struggling to survive in the wake of a civil war. Morin will host the screening alongside actor Antoine Bertrand (STARBUCK) and other members of the cast and crew.

Fantasia will also host the world premiere of DISCOPATH, comedian Renaud Gauthier's feature directorial debut, a stylish bilingual period piece pastiche of giallo films set against a backdrop of the ‘70s disco scenes of New York City and Montreal.

After an impressive tour on the international festival circuit, including screenings at the Sitges Film Festival, Éric Falardeau's bewildering THANATOMORPHOSE, a paralyzing, Kafkaesque tale of living death, finally comes home to Montreal with its Canadian premiere.

A Finnish co-production with Quebec’s Caramel Films (GOON, STARBUCK, LE MAGASIN DES SUICIDES), Stobe Harju's superb IMAGINAERUM (North American Premiere) transports viewers into the neo-gothic universe of metal band Nightwish.

Finally, Fantasia is proud to collaborate once again with Éléphant - Mémoires du cinéma québécois to present a stunning, digitally restored HD transfer of the late Jean-Claude Lauzon's 1987 masterpiece, UN ZOO LA NUIT (Night Zoo), winner of 13 Genie Awards, the jury award for Best Canadian feature at the Montreal World Film Festival and a FIPRESCI award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Hosted by Director / Actor / Co-Writer Matt Johnson, Co-Writer Josh Boles & Actors Owen Williams and Krista Madison.

    THE DEMON’S ROOK

This film is F-U-N. Co-executive produced by celebrated Tiff programmer Colin Geddes and Toronto Film Scene / Exclaim! film critic Katarina Gligorijevic. World Premiere. MACHI ACTION
    Taiwan - Dir.: Jeff Chang
This clever, racy and yet very humane Taiwanese comedy takes aim at the over-the-top tropes and antics of “tokusatsu” (giant monsters and masked space heroes) TV and at the absurd ups and downs of a performing artist’s life. Fresh from stomping all opponents at the Taiwanese box office, MACHI ACTION begins its quest for North American domination at Fantasia. North American Premiere.

    MISSIONARY
    USA - Dir: Anthony DiBlasi
The director of DREAD and CASSADAGA is back with a mean, lean, character-driven thriller of exceptional impact. Playing on the inherent fear that many people have of strangers, their possible delusions and perhaps worse, their bubbling insanity, MISSIONARY also looks at the figure of the man of faith as complex and unpredictable, while also exploring the duplicitous nature that is easily attributed to missionaries of all ilk. Stars Dawn Olivieri, Mitch Ryan and Kip Pardue and J LaRose. World Premiere. Hosted by Director Anthony DiBlasi.

    OXV: THE MANUAL
UK-Australia - Dir: Darren Paul Fisher
One of 2013’s most minblowing discoveries, OXV: THE MANUAL is an endlessly imaginative “scientific-philosophical romance” that plays like the mutant offspring of Michel Gondry, Neil Gaiman, Terry Gilliam and Shane Carruth – yes, really. One of those little miracles that only independent cinema can produce, this is a resoundingly original piece of work that will have you smiling for weeks. World Premiere. Hosted by Writer / Director Darren Paul Fisher

    PLUS ONE
    USA - Dir: Dennis Iliadis
Teens at a wild house party quickly catch on that all isn’t right, as doubles of themselves and everyone else attending are popping up and reliving the evening, just about 45 minutes prior. With each blackout of lights, the doubles catch up a little more in time. An entertainingly inventive and clever slice of high energy teen oblivion from the director of the LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake. Official Selection: SXSW. Canadian Premiere.

    THE RESURECTION OF A BASTARD
Netherlands - Dir: Guido van Driel
Riveting with its innovative cinematic style, doused in outrageous bursts of wicked carnage, and topped off with a smattering of shadowy Lynchian humour, THE RESURRECTION OF A BASTARD is a deliciously oddball investigation of the mystery of life, and all the violent possibilities it has to offer. A blissful cinematic experience that represents the current renaissance in Dutch genre filmmaking. Stars Yorick van Wagenigen (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO). Opening film of the 2013 Rotterdam International Film Festival. International Premiere.

    SAVING GENERAL YANG
Hong Kong - Dir.: Ronny Yu
It is up to General Yang’s seven sons — each a master of his own kung fu discipline — to rescue him from behind enemy lines. SECRETLY GREATLY
South Korea - Dir.: Jang Cheol-soo

    SWEETWATER
USA - Dirs: Logan Miller, Noah Miller
Ed Harris, January Jones, and Eduardo Noriega star in one of the most eccentric and surprising Westerns to storm cinematic saloons in some time, bursting with tension, violence and theatricality, owing as much to Toshiya Fujita and LADY SNOWBLOOD as it does to Ford and Leone. Harris delivers the single most outlandish performance of his career. Official Selection: Sundance 2013. Canadian Premiere

    UZUMASA JACOPETTI
    Japan - Dir.: Moriro Miyamoto
Miike meets Jeunet as a father’s one-track-minded quest for his family’s happiness warps into murderous, absurdist carnage; a uniquely mesmerizing, magical, magnetic mind-melt of a movie from mysterious Kyoto filmmaker Moriro Miyamoto, heralding the return of true underground Japanese cinema. North American Premiere.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

MGM and Screen Gems’ CARRIE is directed by Kim Peirce and produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies). J. Miles Dale (The Vow) serves as executive producer, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) wrote the script from King’s original story. CARRIE’s creative team includes Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (Looper), Production Designer Carol Spier (Eastern Promises), Costume Designer Luis Sequeira (The Thing), and Editor Lee Percy (Boys Don’t Cry).

    Dread Central Turns 7!

    0
    0

Dread Central Turns 7!It's hard to believe seven years have passed since Dread Central opened its doors on July 4th, 2006, declaring our independence from those who were holding us back, but alas... it is so. This past year has been stranger than most, but truth be told, that's how we like it.

Each year I personally take this time to acknowledge staffers past and present so please allow me my usual time to indulge myself. First, our foundation ... The Foywonder, Andrew Kasch, Buz Wallick, Scott Johnson, Mr. Dark, and Nomad. These cats have been here since Day One and helped build this nuthouse brick by brick. I don't care whether they contribute a lot or a little. The simple fact that they've stood by us so long always makes me realize how truly lucky and blessed we are. Gracias for your never-ending loyalty.

A special shout-out to the following DC soldiers that have been waving our flag for years - Heather Wixson, Scott Hallam, Brian Smith, Matt Fini, Sean Decker, Jason "Jinx" Jenkins, Amanda Dyar, and Gareth "Pestilence" Jones. We wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as we are if not for your dedication and work ethic. You are loved beyond words and appreciated more than you'll ever fully know. Thank you all so very much.

Then there's our rogues' gallery consisting of the always kick-ass Brad McHargue, Drew Tinnin, Crix Lee, Serena Whitney, Aaron Williams, Jonathan Ryan, Alex DiVincenzo, and Steve Kalebson. These guys bust their asses in the field and beyond for us. Thanks for all that you do and have done. Please know that even though you don't contribute on the regular, you're still very much vital parts of the machine that makes Dread Central work.

In terms of the backbone of the entire operation - Jon Condit, KW Low, and Debi Moore. If not for these three, Dread Central simply wouldn't exist. If our readers are our blood, then it's those three who are our heart. Much love.

Still with us? Tired of the back patting yet? Well too bad because here comes some more.

You guys are some of the most lovably insane readers in the world. Whether it be Kidd Capone taunting us, Terminal keeping us on our toes, David Fullam insisting that we hate Rob Zombie, or our regulars like James Coker, AlienSharkBoy, Frank_Dracman, theGoldenSimatar, Screamz, LSD Zombie, Nazo, MagusMaleficus, RottenJesus, PrairieGhost, Diavolo, LifeMi, Jerel Of The Dead, Orlovsky and of course our Mexican brother from another mother "El Soccer Dude" J. Oviedo... you guys are nothing short of rock and fucking roll. Thank you for making the Dread Central community what it is. And to those of you who read every day but don't comment... speak up! We know you're there! Get in the friggin' mix already!

My point is.... no matter who you are or how often you visit... I've said it before, and I'll say it again... you are the reason we are allowed to exist, and we'll NEVER ever forget that or take it for granted.

Here's to another year! Thank you.

    Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.

    Pacific Rim

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Horror Comedy InSpectres Getting a Theatrical Release in SeptemberWhat with today being Independence Day, we thought we'd take a moment to pass on some good news about an independent film that has landed exclusive theatrical distribution with Muvico - Reactor 88 Studios' horror comedy InSpectres.

The film will screen exclusively at Muvico locations, beginning with the world premiere on September 6th, 2013, in Rosemont, Illinois.

InSpectres' journey to the big screen has been a long one. Development began in late 2009 with all principal photography completed by October 2010. It was shot in the Midwest, mostly in the Chicagoland area where it will premiere. Based on the role-playing game by creator Jared A. Sorensen, the script was written by award-winning novelist and game designer Matt Forbeck and game designer J.A. Dohm. Stars of the film include Lucas Thompson, Brian Barber, Mike Mauloff, and Melinda Ryba. InSpectres is the feature debut for director Darren Orange, joined by Director of Photography Robert P. Stern. It is the first feature in a series of planned releases for Reactor 88 Studios, with distribution handled by their new venture, Reactor 88 Releasing.

Tickets will be available for purchase in late July. Check out the trailer below, and for more info and updates keep your eyes on the official InSpectres website, and "like"InSpectres on Facebook.

    Synopsis:
InSpectres takes place in a world where ghost, ghouls, and goblins are commonplace. The InSpectres are the only exterminators capable of eliminating these supernatural pests!

After a brief run-in with a homeless zombie, Lucas joins the InSpectres as an Agent-in-Training. He, his mentor Tracey, and the rest of the InSpectres team embark on an eerily funny adventure aimed at recapturing entities freed from a government holding facility by a corporate saboteur. Along the way they run into a variety of released oddities including: an invisible Hollywood fanboy, a Wolfman who likes to party, and a Gremlin that fixes arcade machines. The InSpectres tracks the saboteur across the country in an attempt to prevent Armageddon. In the end their heart and persistence prove exactly why the InSpectres are the ones who… fight the forces of darkness so you don’t have to!

Zombie Killers: Elephant's Graveyard Opens Everywhere Online

Zombie Killers: Elephant's Graveyard Opens Everywhere OnlineWe just got a heads up that the official website, Facebook page, and Twitter account for ZK: Elephant's Graveyard has opened up online, and you can visit all three right now to get yourself up-to-speed on all things zombie killer related!

Billy Zane, Dee Wallace, Felissa Rose, and Gabrielle Stone are lined up to star in Elephant's Graveyard, a zombie horror film shooting in Northeast Pennsylvania this September 2013. With a market over-saturated in everything zombie, the filmmakers plan to avoid a Walking Dead/Living Dead knock-off with a character-driven story that delivers the goods for the sub-genre's fans.

The film has several sequels already planned under the branding of "Zombie Killers," which is referenced in the film, as the story focuses on a team of young warriors under the leadership of military vet Zane who stand between the "figures" and their small rural town of Elwood.

Dee Wallace of E.T., The Howling, Critters, and Cujo fame plays Sharon Sommers, a terminally ill mother pushing her son to leave the dying town of Elwood, even if it means facing death beyond its gates. Wallace shares the screen with her real life daughter, Gabrielle Stone, who plays her son's love interest, Nikki.

Sleepaway Camp's Felissa Rose returns from a recently finished turn in the Eric Roberts/Danielle Harris horror-thriller Dead.tv to play a religious zealot who works to convince the town's residents of a fixed fatalism that can't be fought.

Harrison Smith directs from his screenplay. Venerated CGI artist Joe Lawson and his Digital Arts company provide the post digital while Angela Johnson of Evolution supervises makeup practical effects.

Principal photography begins September 4th in Northeast Pennsylvania with a projected summer 2014 release.
