Read our Jug Face review here!

From the Press Release
Modernciné announced that JUG FACE, the tense horror-thriller written and directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle, will have a national theatrical rollout on August 9th through its domestic distribution arm Modern Distributors. The film was produced by Andrew van den Houten (Funeral Kings, The Woman) and Robert Tonino (Home Movie, Ghoul) for Modernciné and stars Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman), Sean Bridgers (“Deadwood”), Sean Young (Blade Runner), Larry Fessenden (I Sell the Dead), and Daniel Manche (The Girl Next Door). JUG FACE was executive produced by Lucky McKee, Arrien Schiltkamp, and Loren Semmens. The film will have a pre-theatrical VOD roll out in the U.S. on July 8th and is slated for a VOD release, day and date with theatrical, on August 9th.

JUG FACE tells the story of a pregnant teen trying to escape a backwoods community when she discovers that she may be sacrificed to a mysterious pit. The entity in the pit requires a life for keeping the community safe. The face of the person to be sacrificed is crafted onto a ceramic jug. When ignored, the entity unleashes an evil onto the community. Now no one is safe as tragedy befalls each member one by one, and they soon realize that the pit wants what it wants.

“Chad Crawford Kinkle's uniquely original Southern Gothic tale is filled with amazing performances and beautiful cinematography. We believed in the project from the beginning and are pleased to be supporting its domestic release through Modern Distributors, our new-founded distribution and film sales arm. Jug Face is exactly the kind of director-driven filmmaking we will continue to get behind,” said van den Houten.

JUG FACE won the Slamdance Grand Prize Screenwriting Award in 2011 and debuted as a Special Screening selection at this year’s festival.

Synopsis
The pit has spoken. Dawai, the potter of a backwoods community, has crafted a face on a ceramic jug of the person that the pit wants sacrificed. Ada, pregnant with her brother’s child, has seen her face on the jug and hides it in the woods, determined to save the life of her unborn. If she does not sacrifice herself, however, the creature from the pit will kill everyone in the village until she does.

The below clip went viral yesterday, and it features YouTube user James Williams, who decided to have a bit of fun at his sleeping girlfriend's expense.

"I wanted to see how my girlfriend would react to a ghost coming out the TV trying to grab hold of her. I did it by creating a ghost-like puppet that would clamp to the TV screen," said Williams. "I had to stop her running out the house. She said, 'My legs went like jelly; I couldn't really think what was happening, but all I knew was that thing just kept coming at me.' At the end you see her looking over at it. She was asking, 'What is it? What is it?' I like the fact [it] stayed standing upright the entire time. Even with all the kicking. lol. Odd City Reveals the Next Artist in its Limited Edition Pacific Rim Print SeriesOdd City Entertainment is excited to announce the next artist in its limited edition print series for Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures'Pacific Rim is Graham Erwin. Read on for more details and to see Erwin's artwork for the film.

From the Press Release:
Inspired by Oscar® nominated director Guillermo del Toro’s EPIC new movie, Pacific Rim, the artist worked closely with Odd City, the studios, and del Toro to capture the spirit of the film in 12” x 36” screen printed format.

Erwin, a well known artist, detailed his vision for his print, "When first approached by Odd City to work on a poster for Pacific Rim, I immediately dove into watching all the trailers available to get a sense of what I found personally exciting about the film. The thing that struck me was how the Jaegers seemed truly massive, towering, and powerful. Each robot was designed with very strong silhouettes and such high levels of detail that I knew they would work well as a focal point with my illustration style. After some talk with Odd City's CEO, Roman, we decided to go with the 12" x 36" format and custom lettering to hopefully put a unique spin on what is already a great property."

Release and Purchase Information:
The Odd City limited edition screen prints are being randomly revealed (reveals began Tuesday, July 2nd, and continue through Monday, July 15th). Graham Erwin’s Pacific Rim print will be made available for purchase on Thursday, July 11th, at a random time via the Odd City web store.

Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Exclusive: Photos and First News on Revenge Flick Sorrow

Exclusive: Photos and First News on Revenge Flick SorrowWith filmmaker Millie Loredo’s serial killer revenge feature Sorrow having wrapped recently, we thought it time to give the Dread Central audience a first look at the blood-soaked independent flick. Read on!

Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Loredo, who also produces alongside John Benton, John Mastrangelo and Melanie DeMayo, Sorrow stars actress Vannessa Vasquez as "Mila Sweeney," a woman attacked by serial killers, who is taken to a decaying home where the torture and humiliation continue before she manages to escape. Seeking justice and exacting revenge on her aggressors, she refuses to surrender, even as local police are moving in closer.

Filmed on the Red Scarlet over the course of twenty-three days in Utah and Texas, Sorrow is set to make the international festival circuit once post-production is complete. Andrew Sensenig, Melissa Mars, Eric Martinez, Donny Boaz and Mary Etuk round out the cast.

Catching up with Texas transplant and Hollywood resident Vasquez, the film’s star stated of her preparation for the role, “I did a lot research in forensic psychology and serial killers, as well as kidnap victims and survivors. Coming from a psychology background, a lot of it was very familiar to me, but what really struck me the hardest was hearing the stories of the kidnap survivors and of how they managed to escape. I didn't know how I was going to be able to portray the pain and suffering they went through, so for the most part I stayed in character, always in my thoughts the victims that were going through it and the stories of those survivors out there.”

Recent events factored, too, into Vasquez’s preparation, particularly given the escape of Cleveland, Ohio, kidnap victims Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight from their abductor on May 6, 2013, just prior to the start of principal photography on Sorrow.

“I listened to their stories and wondered how they were able to find the strength to stay alive,” recalled Vasquez.

As to whether or not the narrative of Sorrow warranted such preparation, Vasquez stated of the violence inherent to the script, “Let me just say, when the director has to turn her head away while filming scenes because the blood is so intense, you know it's gonna be sick!”

With Sorrow in the can, Vasquez dished on the next feature she’s set to star in, an international espionage action-thriller called Osprey.

“I play a Persian daughter of an Iranian government official who gets into trouble with high authority, and therefore they come after me being I was closest to him,” Vasquez told us of the film. “It has lots of action and drama; it’s going to be lots of fun. We are shooting it in Texas, New York, Washington, France and Dubai.”

Synopsis
It is the early morning in Fieldhouse, Texas, with a population of 20,000. While many open their eyes and get ready for school, Ana Salinas, a forensic detective, arrives at a crime scene. This isn’t your usual crime scene even though it seems like it. Police officers put up yellow tape around the house as neighbors congregate around the scene.

Inside the house two corpses are found along with two torture chambers with hundreds of items of women’s clothing inside, torture devices and blood in every inch of the rooms. The media are quick to claim that they are the supposed “American Spree Serial Killers,” who were wanted by authorities. They had gotten caught up in a murder charge in Dolores, Colorado, three weeks before they were found dead. Hersey took the blame but escaped almost immediately with the help of her lover, Dale. After eluding state cops, they arrived in Moab, Utah, to pick up a friend, Gambit Neely, a good for nothing drifter.

Meanwhile, Mila Sweeney, a forensic psychologist, is on her way to La Sal to visit her mother, who is moving to New York City. Her flight leaves in less than 48 hours. Exhausted, she takes a nap after the long drive from Salt Lake City. Her car doesn’t start up so she is now stranded in an unfamiliar remote location not far from her mother's house. She seeks out help from sadistic serial killers Dale, Hersey and Gambit on the road heading to La Sal.

Taken hostage, she endures their sadistic ways. Later she is taken hundreds of miles away to a dark and gritty house on the outskirts of a small Texas town barely on the map. This is the killers’ territory where they have tortured and killed most of their victims, and no one knows a thing. After surviving a traumatizing, painful, and unforgettable attack, Mila loses touch with reality with signs indicating post-traumatic stress. A women who had everything now has nothing to lose and puts up a fight to get even with her aggressors. When she accomplishes her horrific vengeance, which is pure cruelty, she is confronted with the results of her actions.

Exclusive Q&A: Reliance CEO Manish Agarwal Talks Pacific Rim - The Mobile Game

$

Exclusive Q&A: Reliance CEO Manish Agarwal Talks Pacific Rim - The Mobile GamePacific Rim - The Mobile Game is set to release shortly in conjunction with the film, and to give you gamers an idea of what the game is all about, we chatted with Manish Agarwal, CEO of Reliance Entertainment - Digital.

Dread Central: We haven't seen an official release date for the game yet. We assume it'll be tied in with the film's release - can you announce it yet?

Manish Agarwal: We are looking at releasing the game around the movie release. [Editor's Note: We heard from a third party it'll be releasing tomorrow, July 11th, but haven't been able to confirm that. Check the App Store!]

DC: We've seen the trailer of course, but can you give us any additional hints of the gameplay and how it is similar to (or different from) other Reliance games?

MA: Reliance Games is focused on creating innovative mobile experiences based on high-profile IP. Like Reliance’s successful fighting game Real Steel with over 10M downloads, Pacific Rim will feature larger than life battles pitting players’ Jaegar robot against the monstrous invading Kaiju. The similarities stop there as Pacific Rim includes a story-based progression through the world of the film and the ability to upgrade your Jaeger with a variety of weapons, armor, and other enhancements. It features swipe-based combat, sleek HD graphics, and much more.

DC: Can we count on this gaming experience to be bigger than life as the film appears to be?

MA: We definitely were aiming to create a “bigger than life” experience for the game, and you can see that by witnessing the shear visceral one-on-one combat between Jaeger and Kaiju. We partnered closely with Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures to carry over the theme from the movie to the mobile game. In fact, Guillermo del Toro was quite instrumental in the design and play testing of the game, and his feedback is included throughout the entire development of the game.

Exclusive Q&A: Reliance CEO Manish Agarwal Talks Pacific Rim - The Mobile Game

DC: What was del Toro’s involvement in the design process -- did he play early builds of the game, or provide notes or feedback? Did he give ideas about what the Pacific Rim game should or should not be like?

MA: Guillermo was quite instrumental in both the design and play testing of the game. Even though his schedule was quite hectic with the final cut of the film, he was kind enough to sit down with us on a number of occasions and share with us not only the story background and clips of the film but also his thoughts on what the game should be. We were all encouraged that he came to the process as a gamer, and there was already a deep understanding of what we needed to do to turn his film into a game. In addition, he worked with us on the look of the Jaegers and Kaijus as well as the animations and camera during combat. To him it was important to make the game entertaining in that we give the player a sense of fun through frenetic action.

DC: Without giving too much away, how does the game tie in with the film? Time-wise, it is a prequel, sequel, or does it take place along the same timeline?

MA: Our timeline is just preceding the events of the film so you are given the chance to pilot some of the earlier Jaegers up to those Mark Vs that are in the movie. You can customize your Jaeger with a unique set of weapons, armor, and other enhancements and even customize the paint job should you wish. So in many respects you are given the chance to tell your own tale as the epic battles rages.

DC: Is it necessary to see the movie to get maximum enjoyment from the game?

MA: The game is an extended experience to the film and allows you to do things only hinted at in the movie. You can get the maximum enjoyment from the game as a standalone, but it will certainly add to the experience if you have already seen the movie.

DC: If their characters are in the game, are most of the same actors from the film doing the voices? What about new characters? We know there will be updates to the game long after the movie has come and gone - any actors we might know who have signed on for future content?

MA: There are several characters that appear in the film that are also in the game. Those characters help lead you through the mission planning and black market areas. They will be there as well with hints and tips to improve your performance. The future is still open in terms of incorporating other characters not currently included, and I am sure the players will appreciate the additional connection to the film.

DC: Speaking of the game's updates, will that include new monsters and robots? If so, did the same design team who worked on the film's creatures work on the game's as well?

MA: It’s likely that the future content of the game will include more characters from the movie, both human and non-human. We already have ideas for new Kaijus, Jaegers, and how to integrate more human characters. The background of the Pacific Rim universe is quite deep, and it will be exciting to work in new characters as the game continues to live.

DC: What would you say is the genre of the game?

MA: Pacific Rim – The Mobile Game is an action game being released on mobile for iOS and Android devices (both Google Play! and Amazon). At its core it is a fighter, but we’ve adopted a number of things from the film so that the player is presented with new challenges that will keep things interesting.

DC: To whom, then, is the game targeted?

MA: The game is targeted at movie-goers and gamers who want a deeper and extended experience into the world of Pacific Rim. It will also appeal to fighting/action fans and those who enjoy the “brawler” category of games.

DC: Our readers are horror fans - what are some of the horror elements in the game that should appeal to them?

MA: The game does feature legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, that are taking millions of lives in their wakes and bringing the apocalypse to humanity’s door.

DC: Lastly, what would you say is special about the game?

MA: We have taken what is fun about the brawler category on mobile and married it with a story-based progression through the world of Pacific Rim. Player can start out as rookie jockeys and work their way up the ladder through piloting five different Jaegers. As you progress, the game gets more difficult, and the Kaijus coming through the portal keep getting stronger. To defeat them, you will need to upgrade your Jaeger with a variety of weapons, armor, and other enhancements. Victory will be only be achieved after working your way up and defeating the strongest Category V Kaijus.

Our thanks to Manish for his time!

  • Rex Reed, V/H/S/2, and Journalism 101

Rex Reed, V/H/S/2, and Journalism 101Last night one of my fellow journalists, Scott Weinberg, tweeted something about film critic Rex Reed and the horror anthology V/H/S/2. Intrigued, I hit the link to check out Reed's review. What I found was shocking... but not because of Reed's opinion.

Reed, who's been a film critic for many years, now writes for The New York Observer, a well respected publication. Allow me to quote from Reed's review of the film. Well, you know what? Allow me to quote Reed's entire review of V/H/S/2 as it's only a single paragraph long.

"In this indescribably gory, violent, plotless and deranged purloin of every horror movie ever made by amateurs with a wobbly, nauseating handheld camera, seven unknown directors hell-bent on remaining that way enter a dark, deserted house containing a pile of VHS tapes. One by one, they insert the tapes, and onto the screen flash five episodic creep shows involving a mountain biker pursued by flesh-eating zombies, a cult of Satan worshipers and a sleepover invaded by psycho kidnappers told from the perspective of a GoPro camera attached to the back of a dog. V/H/S/2 is a diabolically psychotic, sub-mental and completely unwatchable disaster that I happily deserted when a man with a retinal implant scooped out his bionic eye with a sharp object, splattering blood all over the camera. Your move, and you’re welcome to it."

Now, honestly? If he had written the above with the intent of it being one paragraph because in his opinion the entire film was only worthy of a few words, that would be one thing, but there are so many errors in his review it's hard to ignore them. Let's address the two most glaring first, shall we?

"seven unknown directors hell-bent on remaining that way"

  • Simon Barrett - V/H/S, You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die - Every single one of those films was met with critical acclaim.
  • Jason Eisener - Hobo With a Shotgun - A film that resurrected Rutger Hauer's career and was met with a very warm reception amongst critics and fans alike.
  • Gareth Evans - The Raid: Redemption - This was universally hailed as one of the greatest action films of all time.
  • Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez - I suppose Reed has never heard of one of the most profitable films ever made, The Blair Witch Project.
  • Timo Tjahjanto - Macabre, The ABCs of Death - Could it be that Reed avoids films with subtitles? That would require extra effort on his part after all.
  • Adam Wingard - Oh, wait. He's associated with Simon Barrett and has worked on many productions with him. There's no chance of Reed having a clue who he is.

Now, I can understand (with all due respect to the concerned parties) Reed not knowing some of the filmmakers mentioned above, especially those who have just recently come into their own, but the co-director of The Blair Witch Project? A film that's been emulated for nearly two decades? This is film ignorance personified.

"a sleepover invaded by psycho kidnappers"

What Reed is referring to here is Jason Eisener's "Slumber Party Alien Abduction." There are no psycho kidnappers involved at all. This is something Reed would have easily noticed had he just, oh, I don't know... done what he's paid for and what his publication expects of him.

Even more troubling, Reed states in his review that he deserted the film after an incident involving a retinal implant. Why troubling? That scene takes place only twenty minutes into the movie. So here's my question: How in good conscience could Reed possibly deem himself worthy of writing a review if he also admits that he bailed on the flick early on? He gives it 0/4 stars. On what basis? Okay, so maybe he didn't like the first segment; does that mean he should be allowed to use it as a measuring stick to judge the rest of the film?

This is nothing short of lazy journalism that is disrespectful to not only the filmmakers but also his readers, who look to him for well-thought-out opinions, his peers, and The New York Observer, which obviously, and probably obliviously, continues to pay Reed's salary for a job he just doesn't do. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not saying Reed should be fired, nor am I trying to defame him, but at the very least he should go back and watch the entire film before being allowed to pass judgment on it.

There are people working in the industry from professionals to amateur folks trying to eek out a living like myself that do not get nearly the pay nor the notoriety to do the same job Reed does and at the very least do it to the best of their ability. The only difference is that most, if not all, of us respect the craft and feel lucky that we have a place to share our opinions with the public whether they are agreed with or not. Reed's review of V/H/S/2 is disrespectful, insulting, half-assed, and fails to even meet the most general of journalistic rules... you know them as "Who, What, Where, When, and Why?" Reed has unwittingly underlined just about everything that is wrong with journalism today in one short, ill-informed paragraph. Hell, maybe if he would have at least read the entire press release for the flick correctly, he could have gotten the segment descriptions right.

In closing, let me leave you with the headline of Reed's "review"...

"V/H/S/2 Is Unwatchable From Start to Finish"

You may have started, sir, but you certainly didn't finish. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Aliens Invade During a SnowfallSnow. Personally speaking, I hate it. Yeah, it looks pretty coming down and when there's a fresh blanket of it covering your city, but try shoveling that shit for 30 years and then get back to me. As if there wasn't enough reason to hate it, you can now throw an alien invasion into the mix.

According to Variety, Benderspink and Evan Astrowsky have come on board to produce science-fiction horror vehicle Snowfall with Clark Baker directing. The story, written by Brooks Elms and Glenn Sanders, takes place during a storm of the century blizzard and tracks a diverse group of Chicago residents trapped on the El Train, only to discover the storm is just a part of a cover for an alien invasion.

Baker also directed the short film Vessel, which Paramount Insurge acquired last year and set up as a feature project.
