Syfy Eying a Sharknado Sequel after Last Night's Social Media Snarknado; Repeat Airing Happening Next Week

Syfy Eying a Sharknado Sequel after Last Night's Social Media Snarknado; Repeat Airing Happening Next WeekWho would have imagined that an Asylum/Syfy movie about tornadoes full of sharks would become one of the biggest pop culture sensations of the year? Not surprising, Syfy is already considering unleashing a second Sharknado.

The ratings aren’t even in yet, and Syfy, a network that generally is opposed to making sequels to its Original Movies, is putting out word that they are strongly considering a sequel based almost entirely off of last night’s social media reaction. 5,000 tweets per minute. 387,000 social media reactions. If that translates to actual rating, Sharknado could very well be one of the television events of our time.

While they decide, in case you missed it, Syfy will present a special encore presentation of Sharknado on Thursday, July 18, at 7PM (ET/PT), and today they also posted a clip:

My advice to both Syfy and The Asylum: DON’T DO IT! Sharknadoes, much like lightning, never strike twice; and the lightning this movie struck last night will never be recreated. This was a right movie at the right place at the right time sort of pop cultural zeitgeist. Not to mention that the very concept behind the film is only novel once. Can’t imagine Sharknado 2 coming even close in matching the social media and b-movie insanity of the first.

Asylum exec David Latt and their head of development, Micho Rutare, spoke to the Hollywood Reporter today about sequel prospects.

Micho Rutare: We want Damon Lindelof to write the sequel. He said he would, and I don't know if he's serious or not but we can do it right now. In all seriousness, it's really Syfy's call but we certainly would do it.

David Latt: (Laughing) We're going to skip to No. 3, it's easier that way; two is always a letdown but three is the mea culpa! Anything is possible. You should see the emails we're getting. It's not off the table. Ian Ziering paved the way for the next installment to have Johnny Depp. He's a trailblazer so we're going to go out to Depp next time. It's going to be a tough negotiation to get Ian back, but we'll figure it out!

You can read the rest of the interview here, where they also let it be known that regardless of whether Sharknado 2: The Sharkening ever comes into existence, we can rest assured that The Asylum have more sharktacular films on the horizon. Specifically, 3-Headed Shark Attack and Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark.

Read our Sharknado review here.

Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, and John Heard star in this cult classic in the making from director Anthony C. Ferrante.

Synopsis
When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, nature's deadliest killer rules sea, land, and air as thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace.

See Grimm's David Giuntoli Transform into a Zombie and Get Some Season 3 Scoops

See Grimm's David Giuntoli Transform into a Zombie and Get Some Season 3 ScoopsSo many juicy spoilers for "Grimm" Season 3 have come out this week that we hope there are still a few left for next Saturday's San Diego Comic-Con panel! We have all the info here along with a look at series star David Giuntoli's zombie transformation.

The "Grimm" season finale saw a zombified Nick (Giuntoli) being shipped off to Europe in a coffin, and executive producer Jim Kouf told TV Guide we shouldn't expect a quick fix or a fast rescue for our hero. "If Nick does survive this zombie state, he's going to be very dangerous,"says Kouf. "There will be residual effects that will change him in a huge way."

Meanwhile in Portland, the still-clueless Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) sees too much in his first direct encounter with a Wesen and goes a bit psycho. Hank (Russell Hornsby) falls deeply for his physical therapist — also a Wesen — and her folks don't like it one bit.

Now for the big news! Hear that ringing? It's wedding bells for Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner). Sadly, they, too, will be plagued by meddling parents. "When you marry someone, you marry their family,"notes executive producer David Greenwalt. "Monroe's mother and father are old-school Blutbads — they may still even hunt for all we know — and they think Fuchsbau like Rosalee are for eating, not for settling down with." Will Nick be the best man? Somehow we don't think Monroe's family will take too kindly to a Grimm joining in the festivities.

Take a look at Zombie Nick below. His makeup is by Barney Burman, an Oscar winner for J.J. Abrams's Star Trek. The third season of “Grimm” begins Friday, October 25, at 9 p.m.

We'll keep you posted on any more tidbits we learn when "Grimm" hits SDCC on July 20th.

2:40pm - Grimm Season 3: Q&A with Cast and Producers from the Hit Supernatural Series, Followed by an Exclusive Trailer of NBC's New Fall Drama, Dracula
In Season 2's shocking cliffhanger finale, we were left screaming for answers! What will happen to Nick Burkhardt now that he's a zombie? What do the royal families want with Nick, and what will Captain Renard's next move be? Will Monroe and Rosalee ("Monrosalee") take their relationship to the next level? What will come of Adalind's royal baby? Is Portland doomed? Join your fellow "Grimmsters" for an hour filled with Wesen, third season themes, and of course, a Q&A session with the cast members David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Reggie Lee, Sasha Roiz, Bree Turner, Claire Coffee, and executive producers/writers Jim Kouf, David Greenwalt, Todd Milliner, and Norberto Barba.

B-Sides: Godzilla and Jet Jaguar Punch, Punch, Punch

B-Sides: Godzilla and Jet Jaguar Punch, Punch, PunchYou’re a robot made by humans. But Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar, you did it, Jet Jaguar. Go, go to protect the peace. We are all surprised at the courage you show. Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, Punch! Punch! Punch!

Toho Studios held a contest in 1972 asking fans to come up with the idea for a new giant monster wrestling robotic superhero along the lines of the enormously popular Ultraman at the time. The winning submission was a robot named Red Arone that looked like a hybrid of Ultraman and another popular Ultraman wannabe named Spectreman. Toho changed its name to Jet Jaguar with plans to launch the contest winner into superstardom with its own movie: Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon.

Upon quickly realizing that this newbie creation did not have the star power to carry its own movie, Toho brought in their signature star, Godzilla, to give the rub to their fledgling superstar and brought back Godzilla foe Gigan to help the giant undersea super roach Megalon wreak havoc upon the surface world--thus the campy tag team daikaiju cult classic Godzilla vs. Megalon.

Alas, poor Jet Jaguar; even sidekicking it with Godzilla would not make him the breakout superhero Toho was hoping for. A shame, because if he had, we might have gotten to hear even more of the Jet Jaguar fight song that plays during the closing moments of Godzilla vs. Megalon.

Here’s an English subtitled version of the Jet Jaguar theme song as performed by Masato Shimon, the Guinness World Record holder for the best-selling single in Japanese music history. Not for this song, obviously.

San Diego Comic-Con 2013: 20th Century Fox Bringing Apes, Wolverine, and a SurpriseAs if Saturday at SDCC wasn't packed enough, now that 20th Century Fox has announced its panels, the day has gotten even more ridiculously crowded... and hairy. Yep, some Apes are on their way!

Per THR's Heat Vision Blog, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be making an appearance with Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and director Matt Reeves in attendance. It opens in a year on July 18, 2014.

Also, with The Wolverine premiering in just a few days (July 26th), of course Hugh Jackman will be there along with director James Mangold.

Lastly, the studio teased a surprise panel and promised "something major," which most of us think means we'll see new footage from X-Men: Days of Future Past, arriving in May 2014.

The presentation begins at 4:15 p.m. in Hall H on July 20th. Stay tuned for our San Diego Comic-Con 2013 coverage next week.

A Bit of Mystery Surrounding Natalie Zea's Possible Return for Season 2 of The Following

A Bit of Mystery Surrounding Natalie Zea's Possible Return for Season 2 of The FollowingYou just can't trust the Internet. For a short while there was a story on TVGuide.com about Natalie Zea returning for Season 2 of "The Following," which of course got picked up by other sites, but now the original article has been removed. Hmm... a case of too much information too soon?

In any event, in a nutshell, most viewers thought Zea's character, Claire Matthews, was killed at the end of Season 1 so her return - if indeed it is happening - is a bit of a change of course for the show, especially since the actress (who'll next be seen in CBS'"Under the Dome") said, “My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson’s concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire? And we both discovered that maybe there wasn’t.” However, Fox execs weren't so quick to let their leading lady go so the season finale was edited two different ways.

Will Claire live on in the current day or just in flashbacks, a device the series often uses? If she does survive, Zea hopes Claire will undergo a transformation: "I feel like what would need to happen would be a change to her DNA. In other words, she might have to break bad a little bit. Although I don't know if anyone besides me would want that."

Yeah, sounds like a bit of studio tinkering, something Williamson is certainly familiar with, but we'll see what we can dig up next week at San Diego Comic-Con, where "The Following" is presenting a panel on Friday, July 19th. The series returns midseason on Fox.

3:15pm- The Following Special Video Presentation and Q&A
Hit thriller The Following returns to Comic-Con for a second year, this time bringing the bacon to Ballroom 20. Series stars Kevin Bacon (Mystic River), Shawn Ashmore (X- Men: The Last Stand) and Valorie Curry (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2) join creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (Scream) and executive producer Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries) for a Q&A and video presentation. Season 1 left a number of casualties in its wake, including Jacob's emotional killing of Paul, the kidnapping of Agent Parker that ended in her death, and Emma's murder of Jacob. The explosive finale featured the highly anticipated face-off between Ryan and Carroll, ending in Carroll's ultimate demise and leaving Ryan's true love, Claire, hanging on for her life. From Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Outerbanks Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television, The Following's second season premieres midseason on FOX.
    Friday July 19, 2013 3:15pm - 4:00pm
    Ballroom 20

The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman & Scott Gimple Talk Season 4's Focus, Comics vs. Series 'Remixing,' and More

The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman and Scott Gimple Talk Season 4's Focus, Comics vs. Series 'Remixing,' and Lots MoreIn a tease of what San Diego Comic-Con attendees will be hearing next week during the panel for "The Walking Dead," comics creator/exec producer Robert Kirkman and new showrunner Scott Gimple have revealed a few more Season 4 tidbits for zombie-starved fans.

Both men spoke with THR recently, and here are the highlights. Be sure to hint the links for more.

Scott Gimple (more here) has been with the series since Season 2, working with both Frank Darabont, the first showrunner who developed the series and brought it to TV, and Glen Mazzara, who replaced Darabont.

When asked how his approach to showrunning differs from his predecessors, Gimple said, "It's my third year now, and I've been able to benefit from the lessons we've learned, and I'm just trying to apply them. Whether it comes to writing, edits, talking with the crew, working on big sequences, I've been lucky to see people do it, both the triumphs and pitfalls. The biggest thing that I know is that it's all about collaboration, and that goes on with all the people in Georgia and all the people in L.A. I'm constantly on the phone with the rest of my executive producers, picking their brains, asking for their help when I need it, and all of us pulling together to get things done."

He continued, "I'm trying to take a greatest-hits approach and take the best of both those runs and run with it. As far as my own personal stamp, it's more of what we do here already with character-driven stories and really delving into these characters while having some amazing, horrible scares and exciting sequences but all in service to a greater story that builds. A phrase that I've been caught using a bunch is 'cumulative storytelling.' It's about having everything stack up so it means something. When 'The Walking Dead' has been its best, all that stuff is happening at once: the emotion, action, horror, scares. I'm very proud that I was able to write an episode where a little zombie girl could walk out of a barn after a horrific zombie execution and have people cry. That's one of the proudest things I've ever done."

Robert Kirkman (more here) had this to say about the tone of this season and the differences in style among the three showrunners past and present: "It's a much more character-based story. It's going to be more focused on who these characters are and what they're going through. To a certain extent, we got away from that a little bit in Season 3. Coming into Season 4, we're definitely going to know a lot more about these people so it will be that much more gut-wrenching and worse when we lose these characters."

With regard to Gimple's cred, he added, "More than any other showrunner, Scott actually read the comics regularly and was a huge fan before the show existed and watched the first season and was a fan before he was brought on as a writer in Season 2. He absolutely loves the material. We are definitely going in some new directions and this will continue to be a different take on the material from the comics, but there will possibly be some scenes that are a little bit closer to the comic than we've done in the past. Season 4 probably has the most number of scenes that are adapted directly from the comic series or very close to what we did. A good deal of that is from Scott and the way he views that material and puts forth that extra effort to work it into the show in a way that it all works."

Gimple elaborated on his adaptation style, "Kirkman is more about departures from the comics than I have been in the past. His approach is more like, 'Oh, it's all good; we've seen that in the comic. We can mix it up.' I've been more hardcore about keeping true to the exact story of the comic. Kirkman wound up loosening me up a little more about it, as far playing with different things going in different directions. To tell you the truth, at this point with where the story is, anybody who's a big fan of the comic would see that we have to. It's funny; in some ways the things that divert from the comic this year have actually served being closer to the comic in some way. There's going to be some looping around to the comic and remixing. That's how I essentially look at it: It's a remix of the comic."

He also shed some light on an upcoming zombie gag that literally kept him up at night: "I have many fears in this life; I can be a bit of a worrier. Something that was keeping me up at night was one of the actual scenes that we did. It was a moment, and I blame Nicotero for it. I was closing my eyes and seeing it, and it wasn't pleasant. It won't be pleasant. In fact, I would say it was so unpleasant that the last several seconds had to be cut out because it just wouldn't have been nice to anybody. I don't want to spoil it, but it's the execution of an amazing gag. It isn't a giant moment because we had to trim a bit off it. People who are watching will see it if they really lock onto it. It's not a pretty thing. But we're not exactly shoving it in the audience's faces."

Could Rick be finally losing his hand this year like in the comics? Both men were a bit coy.

Gimple said, "Going back to the remix idea, there are going to be big moments from the comic that will be seen in a very different context that fans will recognize but aren't that different in the continuity of the book. There are a lot of things that are different at this stage in the story than they were in the comic. The Governor on the TV show is a different character than the Governor of the comic. You will recognize a bunch of those big moments this season, but you will also see that they aren't exactly the same as they panned out in the comic, and you'll know why because of where the story is now. Daryl Dixon is a huge part of the show, and he's not in the comic. The stories that happen involve him heavily, and he, as a character, changes those stories. That happens in so many ways through our story. What's cool is we can get in those moments, those themes and those dynamics, but they happen in different ways, at different times, and sometimes between different characters. It's so cool for me, as a fan, when we do it. And it's a way to take something that the comic fans know and present it in a different way and hopefully with a different emotional context but just as powerful as it was in the comic. So you still get something new, but it serves the story that's just been told."

Kirkman teased when asked about some leaked photos from the set of Andrew Lincoln's hand in a bandage, "It's entirely possible that that could be some kind of spoiler for something that's coming up, or it could be that people are just misinterpreting those photos. I can't really nail anything down, but I can say that there are some very cool and memorable aspects of the comic book series being adapted into Season 4, and it's certainly possible that that's one of them."

What about the dreaded Governor? When will see his return? Kirkman, typically, was vague: "I couldn't really say. We might not really expect to see him in the first episode and he shows up in the first episode back. Or it would be pretty shocking if he didn't show up until the finale. It could be either/or or somewhere in between." He didn't tell us much about Season 4's primary location either: "Anyone who has read the comics knows they don't stay at the prison forever. What circumstances could occur that would lead them from the prison remain a mystery, but they could be in the prison for the next two or three seasons or leave the prison in the very first episode of this season. It's all up in the air, and that's the way we prefer it."

Any clues of how Michonne (Danai Gurira) will deal with Andrea's death? Kirkman revealed, "As we meet Michonne coming back this season, she's on a mission to hunt down the Governor. It's something she's very obsessed with. It's big part of her character this season. She did lose Andrea and she lost her because of the Governor. She's not willing to let that guy go or be out there. It's something that may possibly be to her detriment, the fact that she's so dedicated to finding this person. That's something that very much informs her character this season."

Kirkman also said of new Season 4 character Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard, Jr.) and the show's approach toward the violence that comes with his storyline, "Stookey is very much the character that he was in the comic series. He also appears in the novel series and is a pretty big character there as well. Maybe that means we're adapting some of the stories he was involved in, maybe we're doing some other things he was a part of, or maybe we're going a different way. Like all of the other characters, though we may do different things with them, they are very much the same characters that are being adapted into this world and have the same personalities and back stories. Bob will be someone who is familiar to the comic and novel audience, but we're definitely not married to doing those stories and could do different things there."

Lastly, what about the possibility of seeing some current comic plot threads showing up on TV ahead of schedule? Kirkman pretty much put the kibosh on that: "It's definitely a possibly, but I wouldn't count on it. There are very cool things coming up in the comics that we may be desperate to try to work into the show sooner just because we all enjoy them and think they're cool. I feel like those events and those characters don't really have weight or aren't really seen in the proper light if you haven't done the things leading up to them. There's some stuff that we'd have to do in the show before we got to the current storyline in the comics. That stuff seems like it's still a ways off."

"The Walking Dead" returns this October with brand new episodes. Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, "The Walking Dead" tells the story of a group of survivors who travel in search of a safe and secure home in the months and years following a zombie apocalypse. The series stars Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Melissa McBride, Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Emily Kinney.

Pacific Rim Neither Goes Big Nor Goes Extinct at the Box Office

Pacific Rim Neither Goes Big Nor Goes Extinct at the Box OfficePacific Rim’s less than monstrous opening can’t be considered a shock given that it’s an original property, has no major name stars, and has to clear the hurdle of convincing general audiences that look down upon giant monster movies as something beneath their intelligence....

...even as they flock to see Adam Sandler and his friends fart on each other for 90 minutes.

After weeks of prognosticators predicting Pacific Rim was doomed to bomb with about a $20-25 million opening, Thursday night’s sneak preview tally of $3.6 million had those same doomsayers changing their tune to the possibility of a $50 million opening weekend. Alas, that would not quite be the case; Guillermo Del Toro’s $180 million ode to Japanese giant monster movies had to settle for a somewhat disappointing $38.3 million. That, sigh, was still a few million less than the $42 million opening of Grown Ups 2, the latest Adam Sandler and friends vacation video. Both films would have to settle for second and third place, respectively, behind the unlikely juggernaut that is Despicable Me 2.

On the positive side, it earned an A- Cinemascore and that could translate into strong word-of-mouth which could keep the film viable in the coming weeks. Pacific Rim has also begun doing solid business internationally, proving especially dominant in Russia and Asia (sans China and Japan, where it still doesn’t open for a few weeks). Legendary’s pretty much been banking on international box office for this one, so whether or not we ever get any further Jaeger vs. Kaiju battles probably depends more on that than the US anyway.

And if there ever is a Pacific Rim 2 I hope they feature the Vatican City Jaeger I made using the Jaeger Designer app at the film’s official website. Who will save the world from Kaijus next time? It’s the Papal Jaeger “Crusader Basilica” and its pilots JC Sunday and Archbishop O’Malley!

Not much else horror related to speak of other than World War Z. To date the Brad Pit zombie flick has taken in over $175 million, domestically. Remember when that movie was supposed to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time?

The dead return to the box office next week with The Conjuring, which will either scare the living hell out of you or prove to be another case of horrific overhype, the “I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter” version of Men in Black called R.I.P.D., another fx-driven summer blockbuster whose box office prospects at this moment are not looking good, and the not quite dead but getting close to it geri-action flick Red 2, which will answer the question as to just how many people have been sitting around the past few years clamoring for a sequel.
