#SDCC 2013: Director Gareth Edwards on Designing the Creature, Working with Legendary and More for GodzillaWhile in San Diego for the 2013 Comic-Con, Dread Central had the opportunity to exclusively chat with director Gareth Edwards about all things Godzilla and more.

During our interview, we heard from Edwards about his initial feelings on being offered such an epic opportunity like Godzilla as a follow-up to his 2010 critically-acclaimed indie creature feature Monsters, his approach to balancing the tone and story of the film, his thoughts on the design of Godzilla and more.

Dread Central: It's great talking with you again, especially since we discussed back on Monsters your love of giant monster movies. I have to imagine when you were offered Godzilla that you were pretty psyched- what was going through your head when you got the call from Legendary?

Gareth Edwards:You know, when we were driving around and shooting Monsters, we would have a lot of time to spare in the van so we'd sit around just talking. One day we were just sort of joking around, asking each other, "What would have to happen in your career to make this (Monsters) movie worth it?" And I said when they asked me, "As long as I get to do another film of this scale but also with a low budget, it'll be worth it." If you would have told me back then that the next movie I would be doing would be Godzilla, I would have never, ever believed it; it was never on my radar that doing Monsters would lead to something like this.

So what happened one day was that I had a meeting with Legendary- when you make an independent movie that people seem to respond to, the studios want to set up meetings with you to talk about future projects. I had just signed to another smaller project with another company so I was worried that I had burned a bridge there. But then suddenly out of the blue, I got a random phone call from Thomas (Tull) who said at the end of the phone call, "Oh- by the way, if we had a big, massive franchise that we felt was right for you, would you be interested in doing it?" I didn’t really know what he meant by that but I told him that of course I would be interested. And that was the end of that call but I still had no idea what he meant.

Three days later, I get a strange email that asked me to call a number right now and when I did, it was my agent Rich who told me to sit down immediately. And that's when he told me that Legendary wanted to offer me a chance to direct Godzilla. And at first I didn't really say anything because I was overwhelmed but then he asked me if I was a fan. As I was sitting there talking to him, I happened to realize that I was staring at my DVD of the 1954 version which I had recently played just a few nights before coincidentally and had laying on my desk. So they took that to mean I was a fan thankfully (laughs) so we had a meeting just a few days later; I was so relieved then because I realized Legendary wanted to make the movie with the same kind of tone that I wanted to and they were on exactly the same page I was for this film. They wanted to same movie and they've just been fantastic to work with.

All those horror stories you hear about first-time Hollywood directors that get these kinds of opportunities who have been warned about all these bad things that can happen when working with a studio- but honest to God, I know people say this to suck up to producers but Legendary was so supportive. I could show you every single email that was exchanged for Godzilla and it was nothing but love for the film and nothing but support for myself and the entire team behind the movie. Everyone who has worked on this movie has said how rare our experience was and how it was literally the best producing team they've ever worked with too. We really lucked out.

Dread Central: Something that I've always appreciated about Legendary is that they seem to be really invested in big stories with great character and heart and from what you've said, it also sounds like that's something they've brought to the table for Godzilla as well.

Gareth Edwards:And that's Thomas (Tull)- he's pretty much Legendary and he's really just a big fanboy at heart. He's probably the biggest fanboy that I know and it's like the reason they make these movies is because they want to see them on the big screen themselves; they're just making them happen now. It really feels like that's their main motivation which is a fantastic place to be coming at it from.

Dread Central: So when you're approaching a movie like Godzilla where you have decades and decades of material to draw from, both in literature and in film, what is the biggest challenge for you as a storyteller in creating a story that has to deliver on so many different levels?

Gareth Edwards:Yeah, I think in terms of pre-production, that was the hardest thing for me. The great thing about Godzilla is that the story is such an infinite canvas where you can kind of do anything you want. So early on in the process we had to decide what story we were going to tell, what characters we wanted in the film and we brainstormed every single thing. I feel like we found a good balance between really great characters that were likable but also have this journey throughout the story. I'm pretty pleased with how everything came out; it seemed like we were really bashing around ideas for years on this movie. I'm really quite pleased with how it all turned out; I think people will be quite surprised actually because there is some emotional stuff going on with the story as well. There are moments I cannot wait for people to see.

There are a lot of great spectacle moments in Godzilla which turned out beyond anything I could have ever imagined but there are also a lot of character-driven moments to the film too which left me quite emotional. One of the most important things to me when working on Godzilla was that you really cared about these people and that you're invested in them; I think when you do have all that epic craziness going on, it's ten times more powerful when you can root for those characters to survive everything that's going on around them.

And I have to say that I had an embarrassment of riches in terms of the cast that I had working on Godzilla; it's almost embarrassing how great they all were. So I don't know- I just tried to go back to the kind of films I grew up loving, like late 1970's/early 80's in terms of the pace and suspense. I just wanted the audience to feel like there was a reward for them in the movie I was giving them. I just feel like a lot of recent blockbusters focus on the 'whiz, bang' but don't give you anything to keep you emotionally invested and the story is always cranked to 11. There's just nowhere else to go when you're making a movie like that. For me, things work in a story because of contrast.

Dread Central: I remember from our last interview that having a visual effects background really helped you in making Monsters; did you get to put any of those skills to use on Godzilla, especially when it came time to design his look?

Gareth Edwards:Oh definitely- and the great thing with a project like Godzilla is that when you're doing a movie like this that involves a monster that's so beloved, you suddenly get access to the greatest visual artists out there working today. So I was very lucky in terms of that. And I did get my hands dirty on this and broke out the old tablet again but it was mostly just like tweaking things. But in terms of designing Godzilla, we spent about an entire year just working on that aspect alone. You never quite feel like you have enough time but I wouldn't change a single thing with the design. I'm so incredibly happy with it.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard T. Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Patrick Sabongui, Yuki Morita, Brian Markinson, Juliette Binoche, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, C.J. Adams, and Ken Watanabe star.

Gareth Edwards is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are serving as executive producers alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

#SDCC 2013: Bates Motel Creators and Cast Peel Back the Curtain on Season 2

#SDCC 2013: Bates Motel Creators and Cast Peel Back the Curtain on Season 2If you're not watching "Bates Motel," you're missing out big time, and we suggest you catch up quickly. For those of you who already appreciate it as much as we do, here a few clues of what's ahead in Season 2.

During the roundtable interviews held for the show during the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with series creators Carlton Cuse ("Lost") and Kerry Ehrin ("Friday Night Lights") as well as The Conjuring's Vera Farmiga (who just received an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Norma Bates), Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates), Max Thieriot (Dylan Bates), Olivia Cooke (Emma Decody), and Nestor Carbonell (Sheriff Alex Romero).

Make sure you read through to the end, where we have an awesome video that takes a hilarious look behind the scenes of "Bates Motel" and includes Freddie Highmore visiting the original Psycho house for the first time. We also have a peek at the postcard they were passing out at Comic-Con and a "Bates"-themed paper bag that contained some of the best brownies we ate all week! *wink, wink*

We began with Carbonell, who, when first approached about appearing on the show, felt they were "in dangerous territory [and] treading on a classic." But the presence of Cuse and Ehrin sold him on it, particularly when they said that though his role would be sparse in the first season, Romero will become "more integral in Season 2 and beyond" and will be "integrated more in the storylines." We'll discover his motivations along with some back story.

A&E's Bates Motel

Cuse and Ehrin echoed his sentiments about venturing into sacred territory with the project, and they dealt with the skepticism by taking iconic characters and sets and telling "a whole new story in a new world." It's still very much about a mother/son dynamic everyone can relate to, but "the cocktail [they] wanted to concoct of this town" was "high octane, pulpy, and intentionally larger than life" but still with "subtle, grounded character relationships." Now by Season 2 people should have a growing comfort level with their storytelling mentality so they'll be "pulling the curtain back a little." There'll be a new major conflict that will start with Romero, giving us a look behind the character. And along with Norma's new love interest, George, and her estranged brother, Caleb, we heard about previously, there's a blooming romance on the horizon for Norman as well.

When Season 2 begins, it's summer in White Pine Bay so Norman's not in school - it's tourist time. Cuse said we'll get a little Stand By Me vibe. They do have a long-term plan for their "novel for television," and by the end of this upcoming season he and Ehrin will know how far to go until the series ends. We all know the story's ending from Hitchcock's original movie, but theirs does stand on its own; it's "suggested" by the film.

A&E's Bates Motel

Thieriot and Cooke joined us next, and what Max would most like to see for Dylan in the new year is for him to climb the ladder at work. After all, he's still waiting to meet the big boss. Although, he said, we can never forget "eventually Dylan's fate is fairly certain… You can't get out of the business." He's also very much looking forward to meeting his uncle.

Olivia just hopes Emma meets someone who finally appreciates her. She does keep working at the motel in Season 2, getting closer to Norma, whom she feels is a "kindred spirit" to Emma.

A&E's Bates Motel

A&E's Bates Motel

Freddie Highmore had some pretty big shoes to fill when tackling the role of Norman Bates, but he told us he had "no time to be worried" about how people would react to his performance and "no time to doubt" - he just moved forward. Anthony Perkins was "a source of inspiration," of course, "but not imitation." One of the keys to his controlled performance is not to do too much too soon as it will be "more delicious to see things come out over time."

For those wondering about a certain concerned teacher's untimely demise at the end of Season 1, Highmore told us "Miss Watson's death is present" at the start of Season 2 with implications from it impacting the characters. The dark humor that permeates the show will continue in the second season as well. As for young Norman's journey to becoming the man and psycho we know him to be, he does become more self-aware in Season 2 while Highmore, the actor, continues his delicate balancing act of providing "a humanizing quality to a serial killer." You feel for him, inevitably returning us to the eternal question of nature vs. nurture.

A&E's Bates Motel

And that is also the quandary that drives Farmiga's interpretation of Norma. She kept us riveted with her remarks about the research she's done into the complexities of parenting a killer, including reading a book by Jeffrey Dahmer's father, Lionel, and learning about increased cases of all forms of mental illness among children. And with The Conjuring sitting high at the box office in the #1 spot, she touched upon spirituality and the deep bond she's formed with Lorraine Warren, whom she portrays in the film.

Norma couldn't be more different from Lorraine, and it took Farmiga five to six episodes to really feel comfortable in the character's skin. She sees "Bates" as a "really beautiful story about maternity" with Norma's own "dark past projecting on Norman."

As for how Cuse and Ehrin plan to top Season 1, Vera said she "can't believe what they have [her] doing." Things are going to "get loony." Norma is "past the denial stage" with Norman and now "wants to fix him." As a parent, she'll "resort to anything to fix him."

A&E's Bates Motel

One thing that doesn't need fixing is "Bates Motel." It'll be back in 2014, and as soon as we learn the premiere date, we'll pass it on. For more info in the meantime, visit "Bates Motel" on AEtv.com and "like""Bates Motel" on Facebook.

#SDCC 2013: Dennis Widmyer, Kevin Kolsch, and Alex Essoe Talk Starry EyesEvan Dickson wrote in for both Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central regarding an impromptu interview he did with co-directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, along with star Alex Essoe, about their film Starry Eyes, coming soon from MPI’s Dark Sky Films.

Co-director and writer Dennis Widmyer explains the film, “It’s a horror/character study/body-horror/drama. It’s about an aspiring actress who is kind of desperate and she feels like she’s on the edge of not making it and she goes on a strange audition for a production company that turns out to be a cult. A satanic cult. They lure her in, and she starts to transform physically and mentally into something horrible.

Alex Essoe, who plays the “Starry-Eyed” lead Sarah, elaborates, “There’s three distinct phases that I go through. It was extremely fun and very disturbing. She’s in a place that a lot of actresses will find familiar in that you’ve put a lot into it but you might not be getting a lot back. Because she’s already an outsider, it’s more than she can take. She’s very hard on herself. She already starts off obsessive.

Co-director and writer Kevin Kolsch talks about his process with Widmyer, “We know each other very well. We know what we like and what we don’t like. A lot of times we don’t necessarily need to talk.

They just wrapped an 18-day shoot; did they get enough material? “A lot of times you have to go out and get more movie, but not here. We actually have more than we need. We have a 130-minute rough cut we want to cut down a lot [laughs].

About Starry Eyes:
From elevated genre production company Snowfort Pictures and MPI's Dark Sky Films comes co-writers/directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch's Hollywood-set occult tale STARRY EYES.

Starring ingénue Alex Essoe, the horror story is described as a contemporary take on movies such as Rosemary's Baby. The cast is rounded out by Amanda Fuller (Cheap Thrills, "Last Man Standing" - ABC Television), Fabianne Therese (The Aggression Scale, John Dies at the End), Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills, Compliance, The Innkeepers), Shane Coffey ("Pretty Little Liars" - ABC Television), Marc Senter (Brawler, Red White & Blue), Nick Simmons, and Noah Segan (Looper, Deadgirl).

The screenplay penned by Widmyer and Kolsch was developed with the help of Snowfort's Founder/CEO Travis Stevens, who is producing the film. The film is being executive produced by John Jarzemensky, Aaron Koontz, Giles Daoust, and Gena Wilbur.

Snowfort Pictures and MPI/Dark Sky Films Want to Give You Starry Eyes

Widmyer and Kolsch looked to the past for inspiration: "Starry Eyes utilizes the same approach genre films from the 1970's used, where the horror stems from the character and what they are going through and where the horror represents the internal working of a character."

Stevens adds: "We're setting out to make a scary film for sure,-and Starry Eyes is as unsettling a film as you can get. But this is also a film about a generation who feel entitled to fame and an industry that feeds off that desire. And our hope is that the audience will be just as frightened by that dynamic as they are by the stunning special FX make-up."

Look for lots more soon!

#SDCC 2013: NECA Announces Godzilla Licence; Teases 8-Bit Freddy FigureThe San Diego Comic-Con is a maddeningly busy event and it's hard to stay on top of every little thing. We try though, damn it, and as a result we've nailed down a couple of interesting tidbits for you.

The MUST-HAVE fastest selling collectible at the show for horror fans was easily NECA's 8-Bit Jason figure which was based upon LJN's Nintendo Entertainment System game Friday the 13th. Most of their stock sold on Preview Night and the remainder was gone by Thursday morning. Those of you who got it, consider yourselves lucky. The rest of you are unfortunately subject to the despicable price gougers with no interest in the figure who bought it just to sell it. Hopefully NECA will release it again, if only to spite those bastards.

Speaking of selling, NECA hinted that given the success of the product, they may just release an 8-Bit Freddy figure that would be based upon LJN's Nintendo Entertainment System game A Nightmare on Elm Street. NECA teased that announcement via Twitter in response to a fan who had inquired about the possibility, stating that they would need to see how Freddy looked “all orange” as he was in the game.

Also in their Twitter feed it was revealed that they have secured the license to create figures based upon Legendary and Warner Bros.' upcoming version of Godzilla. They're looking to create both small-scale and large-scale versions. Very exciting!

Stay tuned.

The Conjuring Summons Big Dollars at the Box Office, R.I.P.D. Comes in DOA

The Conjuring Summons Big Dollars at the Box Office, R.I.P.D. Comes in DOAIt's the thing we love to see the most, an original R-rated horror film kicking major ass at the box office. And this week we got that - big time. The Conjuring destroyed the competition, raking in a whopping $41.5 million, nearly doubling its closest competition. R.I.P.D. did not fare as well.

The huge haul for The Conjuring was even more impressive, considering the fact that the film was made for a scant $20 million. A real bargain as far as filmmaking is concerned. This was not the case for the other horror-ish film released this weekend. R.I.P.D., which featured big name actors Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges and carried a price tag of $130 million, shit the proverbial bed with a paltry take of under $13 million. Ouch!

R.I.P.D. actually came in at number seven, behind Pacific Rim, which was the sixth biggest movie at the theaters in its second week in release ($15.9 million this week, $68.2 million total take). World War Z managed to stay in the top 10, hanging in at the number nine spot with a $5.2 million take to bring the Brad Pitt thriller to a very tasty $186.9 million after a five-week run.

The success of The Conjuring already has talk of a sequel brewing. It's been a great year for Vera Farmiga, who is fresh off the success of "Bates Motel" and now finds herself in the number one movie in the country. Even Gru and his minions couldn't stop The Conjuring! Yay horror!

Kino Lorber's Horizon Movies Catches Itself a PigSo, you wake up in the desert one day, with absolutely no memory of anything that's happened to you or even how you got here. In my younger days I would refer to that as Thursday, but when it comes to the movie biz, what we are talking about is the sci-fi thriller Pig.

Deadline reports that Kino Lorber’s Horizon Movies scooped up North American rights to writer-director Henry Barrial’s Pig.

The flick has done well on the sci-fi fest circuit during the past year, and it tells the story of a man who wakes up in the desert with his hands bound and a hood over his head. After being rescued by a local woman, he realizes he has amnesia and has no idea of who he is and how he got there. A lone clue sends him on a dangerous journey of discovery.

Rudolf Martin, Heather Ankeny and Keith Diamond star in the sci-fi thriller produced by Mark Stolaroff.

#SDCC 2013: Jared Padalecki, Robert Singer, and Jeremy Carver Talk Supernatural Season 9

#SDCC 2013: Jared Padalecki, Robert Singer, and Jeremy Carver Talk Supernatural Season 9The SDCC press room for "Supernatural" was packed to the gills as usual so we didn't get to speak with everyone, but what we did come back with is juicy as hell for fans of the show. Read on for all our Season 9 scoops, including a wacky sounding Wizard of Oz tie-in!

First to chat with us was executive producer Robert Singer, and in addition to surprising our group with the first word on a possible "Supernatural" spinoff, he described the new season as their "most character-driven yet," which is saying a lot when you think about it. With Crowley, Castiel, and the boys all mixed up, he and co-exec producer Jeremy Carver are "developing the characters and relationships on another plane... There still will be a lot of action with angels on earth and demons without a leader" and running amok.

By the end of Episode 1, something happens to Sam and Dean that "takes their relationship to a new place." Dean makes a decision he may have second thoughts about regarding Sam.

Singer, the only original member of the producing team still left on the show, feels confident the upcoming storyline is fresh. Because he can still get charged up for a new season, he's back again! "Fans won't be disappointed," he promised.

People always talk about Season 10 being the final one, and Singer said, "We'll shoot for ten and see what happens." The magic number for him 200 episodes.

When asked about his favorite villains, his answer was similar to what a lot of us would say: Mark Sheppard's Crowley and Mark Pellegrino's Lucifer. He added that there are "so many that have been great… Lilith and Naomi." Those actors were willing to "go for it" and truly loved the characters. He emphasized that there are "no restrictions on ideas" for the writers. They encourage "out-of-the-box thinking and villains."

When asked about flashbacks, Singer teased that Episode 4, in which Felicia Day will reappear as Charlie, ties in the past of the Men of Letters to the present in an "interesting way." As for new characters, he said so many of the regular actors are so well established now with their character arcs peaking, they haven't thought of any yet, although he's sure, of course, that they will.

Series co-star Jared Padalecki joined us next and said he's "more excited about shooting this season than any other" so far. He added these are the "best first five episodes [he's] read, including Season 1." He enthused further, "This is gonna be badass. As an actor, a fan of the show, and a reasonable part of the show (laughs all around), I'm really excited. It's very cool. It'll explain how Sam [gets] better... when at the end of last year he was clearly not getting better. Dean says, 'Stop the trials, and you're not gonna die,' and Sam's like, 'Okay!' and stops the trials, but clearly he did not get better. So sometime between that and Episode 2 of Season 9, he gets better. You'll find out immediately. I just wish I could talk about it."

When asked about a theme for Season 9, Padalecki explained, "One of the great things we didn't do last season is [that] we didn't kill somebody or start an apocalypse or do something where it seemed final; and I think one of the reasons was we [already] knew before the [season finale] episode was written that [we] were going to have another 23 episodes afterward. So it's almost like we're treating Seasons 8 and 9 like one 46-episode season as opposed to these false breaks… It's continuous, and we pick up right where we left off. Not right there in the church, but in a couple of hours' time or an hour's time, you know."

"The overarching theme is that the brothers made a commitment to each other in the church that they were going to check in with each other, that they were going to remain partners and on the same track and not like, 'You go do this while I go do that…' After the second trial we know how to cure a demon, and we have the King of Hell in our basement." There'll be some give and take between Crowley and the Winchesters. They'll barter with him and "hit the pavement, do the grunt work of trying to cure demons."

Jared is certain fans are going to think it's badass and is hoping they like his choices as an actor when they see what happens. When asked why fans might NOT like what Sam does, all he'd say was that it had something to do with "how Sam is not dead and seems better."

#SDCC 2013: Jared Padalecki, Robert Singer, and Jeremy Carver Talk Supernatural Season 9

As we were wrapping up, he mentioned some footage that was shown during the panel, and since we hadn't seen it yet, he described the scenario for us: Sam and Dean show up at the Men of Letters bunker, Kevin doesn't realize they're still alive, and then Sam walks Crowley in with a bag over his head. They sit him down in the dungeon in a devil's trap, pull his bag off, and say, "This is how it's gonna go: You're gonna give us the name of every demon on earth and the human they're possessing." Crowley's like, "Fuck yourself." So obviously he's not giving up that easily. But Sam and Dean still have him. So we know that some time in Episode 2 they put Crowley in their dungeon inside the Men of Letters bunker. And obviously Kevin is there, and Kevin and Crowley don't really have an affection for each other. So they have to convince Kevin to leave Crowley alone and not fall for his tricks. Crowley presumably knows where Kevin's mother is, if she actually is dead, so he's certainly going to try and get in Kevin's head to escape, but we're gonna hope that doesn't happen.

Lastly, we spoke with Jeremy Carver, who also used the "E" word - "excited" - to describe his feelings about Season 9, mostly from a character standpoint. We'll be in a "broken landscape without the normal hell or the normal heaven. Everything's screwed up." Each of the characters, in ways apparent now and more so during the season, are going to be dealing with a "Who am I?" situation, the most obvious being Castiel since he's human now.

"He's human and has to deal with all that entails [plus] being a fugitive from angels who want to exact revenge." He's faced with: "Am I going to be the best human I can be, or am I going to somehow try to rejoin the angelic fight I essentially caused?" The new season will be "full of mini-crises like that."

As Singer mentioned, we'll see more of Charlie pretty early on. Carver reiterated that the episode is "linked with the past" in terms of the Men of Letters. We're going to see "the first two Men of Letters ever to inhabit the bunker. Literally the first two guys turning the key in 1935 and entering this brand new adventure." Things take a turn for the "even more weird, and the first case they are dealing with is connected to the Wizard of Oz. It's fun, emotional, and Charlie is worked in there somewhere. It's really cool." We'll learn a lot more about the Men of Letters with a "big payoff" of what began last season.

Carver tackled the ten-year plan question raised with Singer earlier, saying yes, the overall game plan has been ten years, but things could "shift." He feels his obligation is to keep the show "as fresh as it was in Season 1 [and] not bring it to an unnecessarily premature end." If they keep it fresh and people are watching, his obligation is to keep spinning them out so "it's a tough question to answer." It's still fun, and they're all having a great time.

Everyone knows "Supernatural" fans are some of the most passionate in the world so does Carver worry about negative feedback? He said that their job is to keep things "really, really grounded and relatable," but it's also fun to create a little controversy. He concluded, "You may not agree with some of the decisions the characters make early on this year, but you will understand them."

We can't wait to see which camp we fall in when "Supernatural" returns Tuesday, October 15th. For more info visit "Supernatural" on cwtv.com, "like""Supernatural" on Facebook, and follow @CW_spn on Twitter.

#SDCC 2013: Exclusive: Legendary Artist Len Wein Looks Back at Swamp Thing, Wolverine and MoreComing to Blu-ray August 6th is Wes Craven's Swamp Thing from the fine folks at Scream Factory and to mark the occasion, Dread Central sat down and discussed the upcoming hi-def presentation amongst many other really awesomely geeky things with Swamp Thing creator Len Wein.

Wein also had a hand in many iconic "X-Men" stories over the years, worked on the "Watchmen" series with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and was responsible for creating arguably one of the most iconic characters from the comic world, Wolverine.

Check out some of the highlights from our exclusive interview with Wein below and make sure to pick-up Scream Factory's Swamp Thing Blu once it's available this August.

Dread Central: I grew up loving Wes'Swamp Thing but hadn't seen it in about 12 years so it was pretty incredible to get to revisit it on Blu-ray last week. How did you feel when Scream Factory came to you about this new presentation especially since the movie has become a cult classic since its release over 30 years ago now?

Len Wein:I think it's amazing- I can't wait to see it.

Dread Central: Oh, wait until you see it- I think Scream Factory did an amazing job.

Len Wein:That's great to hear; I was happy to get to do an interview for it and talk about the character again. They really are the best at preserving the kinds of films that deserve to be preserved which is wonderful for all of us fans out there. It's nice to know that there's someone out there looking out for all the cult films which deserve to be cared for just as much as the 'awards movies' do.

Dread Central: I think it's also kind of a fun way to reintroduce new audiences to this iconic character too.

Len Wein:Oh definitely. And I think Guillermo del Toro is going to do the Justice League Dark movie and use Swamp Thing in that too which would also introduce him to more fans too which I think would be just great.

Dread Central: When this movie was made, there weren't multiple comic book-based movies coming out every year; how surprised were you and Bernie that someone wanted to bring "Swamp Thing" to the big screen?

Len Wein:Very, very surprised. I was like, "Are you kidding?" But I knew that Sol Harrison who was editor at DC Comics at the time saw that the character had that kind of potential so he sold the movie rights for something like $60,000. That's something I've always been slack-jawed about (laughs). But I was thrilled and I was a fan of Wes Craven and a fan of the movie that he made from this character's world. I really thought at the beginning it was going to be great and it turned out to be really great. The only thing about it is the limitations Wes had to deal with due to the technologies available at that time.

Synopsis
Deep in Florida's darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise), and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable (Adrienne Barneau), have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilisation forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane (Louis Jourdan), is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnaping Cable, Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes "Swamp Thing"-a half plant superhero who will stop at nothing to rescue the beautiful Cable and defeat the evil Arcane...even if it costs him his life!

  • Exclusive: Michael Plumides Talks Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Heading to Home Video

Exclusive: Michael Plumides Talks Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Heading to Home VideoOne of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.

Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.

Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?

Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous GWAR show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film. But I didn't really have an idea how to break in and make an impact Then I thought, what better way than to make some low-budget horror? Horror and heavy metal fans are THE most loyal. So I came up with this concept called Ghost Trek (the second episode screening in Atlanta at Gwinnett Center International Film Festival - July 27th at 7 PM to promote my Kill the Music project.)

We had a few screenings of the pilot episode called The Kinsey Report in 2011 winning "Best Comedy" at Fright Night this year and I was working on a production deal with ThinkFactory Media - that incidentally went nowhere. I was also working in an unofficial capacity for Morgan Creek as a consultant. When Mad Monster Party announced their first convention in Charlotte, I contacted them about playing my Ghost Trek pilot but my requests fell on deaf ears. Eben McGarr and Joe Moe were from California and didn't know me from Adam. But they asked around, and when I heard they needed help getting permission from Morgan Creek to screen Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut at Mad Monster Party but to little avail, I stepped in and contacted now President, David Robinson and told him, "We need to support this. I think it's got some legs."

It took me one phone call to do what they were trying to get done for months. Last summer I received a pitch package from Morgan Creek for a possible Nightbreed TV show, that had been put together by Matthew Venne (Fright Night 2, Bag of Bones) who had several meetings with Clive and Mark Miller taking notes, Clive's agent represents Matt as well. Morgan Creek asked me what I thought. So I reworked it a bit, and then contacted Mark Miller and Russell Cherrington to talk a little about it. I worked on some new character designs with Tate Steinsiek appearing on "Face/Off" premiering August 13th on Syfy. Morgan Creek liked my feedback and put me under contract as a "Creative Consultant" on the TV show. Then nothing. I was given no directives so I was kind of on my own - but I'm on spec so nothing can really happen for me unless I make it happen. I knew the film needed distribution and we weren't going the Hollywood route because those folks are often clueless about pop culture and really wouldn't give a shit - they would be like, "That movie was a bust. Nobody cares about that movie!?!" They have no understanding of groups like Occupy Midian - and crowd sourcing. Street promotion. They don't know anything about their own business - you can't just throw money at something if you don't understand it. So, knowing what I know about fan boys and geekdom- - I went the indie route.

I hit Tim League up from Fantasticfest and Drafthouse Films on Facebook about a Nightbreed screening and incidentally asked if he might be interested in distribution for the Cabal Cut. I needed people that would understand it. Drafthouse Films - COO, Jim Shapiro is a huge fan - he sent me a pic of his life-size "Decker" head. Although they were fans, to do what we needed to do wasn't really their wheelhouse. So, on the eve we were supposed to close, they suggested we go to Shout!Factory, introducing me to Cliff MacMillan, who I in turn introduced to Morgan Creek--we got the deal done minutes before the announcement. Literally minutes. And, here we are.

DC: What does this victory mean to you?

MP: A BIG VICTORY. I've been working on all things Nightbreed for over a year. When I received the call yesterday, I was euphoric. I have really been pushing Morgan Creek to stay on top of everything so we didn't miss that Comic-Con opportunity - to give back to the fans. They deserve it. Everyone has worked really hard on this. Mark Miller, Russell Cherrington, David Robinson and I talked daily getting this thing together - Jose Leitao' and Ryan Danhauser keep everyone informed on Occupy Midian. And Clive is ecstatic. It really feels satisfying to say, "We got it done - corralling cats and getting all of them to sing the same song in unison." I feel like we pulled off the impossible. The fans made this happen. No doubt. We owe the fans for their support. The actors have all come out and supported the movement - Anne Bobby and Craig Sheffer have been delightful. It's just been really great to see it finally come to fruition. Now we will work on worldwide distribution, the comic reboot, and the TV show. I think we have a lot of momentum now. Nightbreed deserves to be a recognizable brand - "Meat for the beast!"

DC: What steps needed to be taken to make it come to fruition?

MP: Russell will be flying in with the VHS tapes and other necessities from Derby, England to meet me and Craig Scheffer in Atlanta on the 26th for the Gwinnett Center International Film Festival. He's hosting a screening of the Cabal Cut. Also on Saturday, July 27th, I'm screening the new fully-completed Ghost Trek: Goomba Body Snatchers Mortuary Lockdown episode at 7 PM - we are currently #2 in "Horror" behind the Clive Barker penned Zombies vs. Gladiators currently on Amazon Studios. Plus Russell and I are on a few panels. Atlanta is the new Mecca - we want to bury a flag down there. My old stomping ground. Morgan Creek may have a feature filming there in 2014 as well so I should be in Atlanta a lot of next year. We will also have a huge panel at DragonCon so stay tuned to Occupy Midian for news on that or go to Dragoncon.org for more information.

DC: What can fans expect to see with the Cabal Cut?

MP: Well once I made all the introductions everything else is kind of out of my hands. But the VHS work print elements will be delivered to Shout!Factory - they do excellent work and add lots of extras and behind-the-scenes stuff. I think everyone will be very pleased. There's also a documentary in the works. With the limitations as far as the so-called "lost footage", I think fans will be forgiving.

DC: Approximately when will the release date be?

MP: I don't have a release date yet but keep an eye out for more screenings. A biggie should be announced very soon for the Lone Star State. If you are on the East Coast, come and meet us in Atlanta this week at Gwinnett Center for the party of a lifetime. It will probably be the last time we will all be this intimate - my instincts tell me it's gonna get crazy. 2014 should be a great year for the "Tribes of the Moon."

Another companion book for "True Blood,"Steve Newlin’s Field Guide to Vampires, is coming this fall, and we have a sneak peek of it along with a preview of next week's Episode 6.07, "In the Evening."

The full title of the book is Steve Newlin's Field Guide to Vampires (And Other Creatures of Satan). It's written by Gianna Sobol with Michael McMillian, who plays Newlin on the show. It will be available October 29th from Chronicle Books.

    Synopsis
The vampires, werewolves, faeries, and other supernatural creatures that call Bon Temps, Louisiana, home aren’t universally accepted around town. Sweet-talking, bible-thumping Steve Newlin is their self-appointed nemesis. In his demented field guide, Steve has recorded all he knows about these Creatures of Satan, and that’s a lot: their strengths, their weaknesses, their bylaws, and, of course, how to kill them.

Sadly for Steve—but luckily for "True Blood" fans everywhere—his journal was stolen by Fangtasia vampires Pam and Eric, who have defaced it in a most disrespectful and snarky manner. A cunningly produced facsimile, and a hilarious read, the Field Guide to Vampires is packed with untold insight into our favorite TV characters, along with photos, letters, postcards, handwritten notes, and Steve’s own idle doodles in a scrapbook that perfectly captures the tongue-in-cheek camp that makes "True Blood" the most widely watched show on HBO.

Episode #6.07: “In the Evening” (airs 7/28/13)
Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) makes a last-ditch effort to save an ailing Nora (Lucy Griffiths). A tragedy close to home forces Sam (Sam Trammell) to ignore Alcide's (Joe Manganiello) warning and return to Bon Temps. Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) shows her gratitude to James (Luke Grimes), a fellow incarcerated vamp, while an emboldened Sarah (Anna Camp) exacts a measure of revenge on Jason (Ryan Kwanten).

Written by Kate Barrow and directed by Scott Winant.

#SDCC 2013: Joe Hill Announces NOS4A2 Prequel Comic Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland

#SDCC 2013: Joe Hill Announces NOS4A2 Prequel Comic Wraith: Welcome to ChristmaslandIn a brand new limited series from IDW that will serve as a prequel to his novel NOS4A2, Joe Hill will be taking readers on a dark plunge into the dizzying world of Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland, the first comic Hill has written since the stunning conclusion of his award-winning masterpiece Locke & Key.

    From the Press Release:
Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland will be equal parts mystery and horror.

According to Hill, "The world of NOS4A2 is very, very big, and I only had a chance to explore a part of it in the course of the novel. I told the story I wanted to tell, but I also feel there's a lot more to discover. In NOS4A2 we learn about Charles Talent Manx III, who has kept himself alive for over a century by draining an essential life force out of children, warping them into giddy monsters. When he's done with them—when Charlie has what he wants—he takes them to Christmasland, where they live forever and ever in an eternal Christmas Day. They live for fun and are good at having it, whether they're playing a game of tag... or a bloody game of scissors for the drifter. In Wraith we're going back to Christmasland at an earlier time, to find out what happens when some unlucky grown-ups find themselves on Gumdrop Lane and Charlie's children decide to have some fun with them. It's very much a standalone story, and it's my intention to craft something that can be loved by people who have never cracked the cover of NOS4A2, while hopefully giving those who liked the book a new Charlie Manx tale to enjoy."

In Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland, Hill is joined by illustrator Charles Paul Wilson III (Stuff of Legend), who provides interior art and creepy Christmasland-themed covers, as well as by his Locke & Key partner Gabriel Rodriguez, who is providing covers for each issue. Issue 1 (re)introduces the reader to Charlie Manx, his world, and his car, a vintage 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith that runs on human souls instead of gasoline. When a luckless child falls into Charlie's grasp, her new best friend soothes her with a story: his story. From there the series introduces a new cast of characters to Christmasland and fully delves into its wonderfully devilish delights, as the sound of sleigh-bells ring in the background…

“NOS4A2 was Joe Hill’s most accomplished novel to date, and its memorable villain Charlie Manx deserves the additional focus this series will bring,” said Chris Ryall, IDW Publishing’s Chief Creative Officer. “Joe and CP Wilson III have some nightmarishly clever things planned for this series, from an advent calendar-style cover to some bloody good fun on the interiors as well. The readers are really gonna get taken for a ride in this one.”

Artwork and Specs Come Home for the Halloween 35th Anniversary Blu-rayThe first artwork and specs have surfaced online for the upcoming 35th Anniversary Blu-ray of John Carpenter's seminal classic Halloween. Check out the goods right here!

    From the Press Release
In 1978, Compass International Pictures released an indie horror film by an up and coming director and a largely unknown cast. Presented by the late Moustapha Akkad, the film cost $325,000 and ended up not only becoming one of the most successful independent motion pictures of its time, but single handedly created the genre of the modern horror film along with the first iconic (via a painted-over William Shatner mask) cinematic slasher!

Its global success spawned seven sequels, a reboot directed by Rob Zombie and a sequel-to-the-reboot, as well as created generations of grateful fans. The director’s name is John Carpenter and the film was Halloween. This year marks the 35th Anniversary of the timeless thriller and to celebrate, Anchor Bay Entertainment is bringing back the terrifying original as it’s never been seen or heard before!

Anchor Bay Entertainment and Trancas International proudly announce the September 24th release of the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray™ release of Halloween. For this very special release, Anchor Bay and Trancas went back to the vaults to present this legendary terror classic as never before, including creating an all-new HD transfer personally supervised by the film’s original cinematographer, Academy-Award® nominee Dean Cundey (Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Apollo 13, the Back to the Future trilogy), a new 7.1 audio mix (as well as the original mono audio), a brand-new feature length audio commentary by writer/director John Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis, an all-new bonus feature with Ms. Curtis, as well as selected legacy bonus features from previous ABE releases. Available in a collectible limited-edition book-style package (available only for the first printing) with 20 pages featuring archival photos, an essay by Halloween historian Stef Hutchinson and specially commissioned cover art by Jay Shaw, SRP is $34.99.

“Anchor Bay Entertainment has been home to Halloween for almost 20 years,” noted Malek Akkad, President of Trancas International Films and son of Moustapha Akkad. “I’m so happy that we’re partnering with them to present the definitive edition of what is widely acknowledged as one of the seminal horror films of the 20th century.”

Halloween stars Jamie Lee Curtis (A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies) in her debut role. Anyone who’s ever watched a horror film in the last 35 years knows the story of Michael Myers, who as a child, butchered his sister with a kitchen knife. Committed to a mental institution and watched over by Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance, Halloween II, IV & V, Fantastic Voyage), he engineers his escape 15 years later, returning to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois on Halloween night to terrorize anyone who gets in his way, including babysitter Laurie Strode (Curtis).

Co-starring P.J. Soles (Carrie, Stripes, Rock ‘n Roll High School), Kyle Richards (The Watcher in the Woods, Eaten Alive), Nancy Loomis (Carpenter’s Assault On Precinct 13, The Fog), Charles Cyphers (Escape From New York, The Fog) and Brian Andrews (The Great Santini, Three O’Clock High), Halloween also cemented the careers of many behind the camera including Carpenter, Cundey, producer Debra Hill and film editor/production designer Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season of the Witch, “It”).

  • All-new commentary track with writer/director John Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis;
  • “The Night She Came Home” new featurette with Jamie Lee Curtis (HD);

#SDCC 2013: Find Out What's Ahead in Being Human Season 4 and Watch the Show's Comic-Con ReelThe Season 3 finale of Syfy's "Being Human" left all four roommates in a bad predicament. We brought back from Comic-Con a few clues of what's ahead in Season 4 along with the sizzle reel they shared with the fans.

First up was showrunner/executive producer Anna Fricke, who told us this year's theme is "destiny" and promised Season 4 will be "epic." We'll learn "everything happens for a reason." There won't be as many flashbacks as in years past, but we will see several returning guest stars like Amy Aquino, Mark Pellegrino, Kyle Schmid, and Deanna Russo.

As for the mysterious woman that looks just like Aidan's long dead wife (played by Katharine Isabelle), whom we saw emerge from a cab at the end of Season 3, we'll "find out exactly who she is" in Episode 4.01.

The always bubbly Meaghan Rath joined us next and teased that Sally will be "quite different" this year as she has "absorbed a lot of Donna's power" and will use it to get back to her friends. With regard to that difference, Sally "can't be the same as she was after losing so much over and over," and she'll be using that to "mask some really deep pain." Fortunately, she'll be reunited with the guys fairly quickly after Season 4 begins.

In terms of a new love interest for her character, Rath said "something is happening" but of course couldn't share any details. She did shed a little more light on the "destiny" theme in that Season 4 will "explore what happened in the roommates' pasts to bring them together." They're trying a lot of new stuff this year to keep it fresh.

#SDCC 2013: Find Out What's Ahead in Being Human Season 4 and Watch the Show's Comic-Con Reel

We were running short on time so missed chatting with Sam Huntington, but his co-star Kristen Hager filled us in on what newlyweds Josh and Nora (they shot their marriage scene in one take by the way) will be contending with in upcoming episodes. Things have "never been more challenging" between the two characters: It's been three months since we last saw them, and he's a wolf all the time now except during the full moon, which means they only have about a half hour of togetherness each month after he reverts to human form and before she turns into a wolf.

Aidan and Nora are now very close (which should satisfy those fans who were so upset at Nora last season when she was having her issues with the resident vamp). They're working together to get Josh back to normal and find Sally. Obviously they succeed in the latter mission because Hager promised we will see more Nora/Sally moments in Season 4. And we'll also see more of Nora's "primal wolf" as she'll do "whatever it takes" to get Josh back.

Lastly we spent a few moments with Sam Witer, who hinted that we'll "see some faces thE audience won't expect." Since Season 1 we've had a "very defined turf" for the characters that was "then flip-flopped a bit." For instance, Aidan has now become quite a "subtly funny guy." But his love/hate relationship with the other vampires continues to be a big thing this year. He's still "on the bag" but doing it more and more. He'll finally tackle once and for all: Which side is he on?

Witer added they are "taking some risks this season" and he loves what they are doing with his character. Let's not forget, he reminded us, "Kenny's out there, there's still Kat, and [we have] this woman who looks like [his] wife."

They decide to investigate the mystery of Mary Malone, aka Typhoid Mary, who was sent to North Brother Island, a New York Insane Asylum, to live in a quarantined isolation after she was blamed for spreading Typhoid Fever. Dozens were infected by the terrible virus, and several deaths as well. She would eventually die on North Brother Island, after living for decades in isolation, a tragic end to a tumultuous life.

Now, ninety-six years later, Mark and Andy set out to discover the real truth behind Mary's demise, and travel to the ominous North Brother Island. Not long after their investigation begins, Andy's fiancé, Michelle, attempts to contact Mary's spirit through a séance. The next morning, Mark and Andy discover Michelle is not herself, and she starts to act strange, filled with paranoia and confusion. When Michelle's condition takes on a violent turn for the worse, Mark and Andy become desperate and seek help by contacting the descendants of those who were responsible for Mary's torturous death in solitary confinement. Mark and Andy hope they may hold the key to saving Michelle but instead they uncover dark, sinister secrets and a wicked legacy of pure evil and murder. What began as a simple investigation turns into a battle for survival, where torture and death appear to be the only outcome.

Mark eventually has to accept the presence of Mary's paranormal existence in order to save Michelle and himself, and try to escape. Typhoid Mary may be dead, but she's certainly not gone. She has a story of vengeance she wants told...no matter the cost.
