  • First Look at the Witches of East End

    0
    0

First Look at the Witches of East EndEntertainment Weekly, as they always seem to do, scored themselves the very first still from "Witches of East End," starring Julia Ormond, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Rachel Boston, and Madchen Amick. Check it out!

The ten-episode series, produced by Fox 21, will premiere later this year. "Witches of East End" was one of four hourlong pilots Lifetime ordered last summer. Patrick Heusinger and Daniel Ditomasso play brothers Dash and Killian Gardiner.

Based on Melissa de la Cruz’s best-selling novel, "Witches of East End" centers on the adventures of Joanna Beauchamp (Ormond) and her two adult daughters, Freya (Dewan-Tatum) and Ingrid (Boston), both of whom unknowingly are their family’s next generation of witches. Amick stars as Joanna’s mischievous witch sister, Wendy. “This is one of the most exciting ensemble casts we’ve seen, and the whole show is fresh, original, and just right for Lifetime,” Lifetime’s EVP Rob Sharenow said.

Maggie Friedman ("Eastwick") wrote the pilot, which was directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), and will executive produce "Witches of East End" with Erwin Stoff (The Matrix) of 3 Arts Entertainment.

    Novel Synopsis:
The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters, Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.

For centuries all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.

NewBev to Present Midnight Showing of Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood on July 27th

NewBev to Present Midnight Showing of Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood on July 27thIf you're in the Los Angeles area and you happen to be in the mood for some mediocre Friday the 13th action this weekend, you might be interested in a midnight revival screening of the Paramount era's darkest day!

In all seriousness, I enjoy Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. It just happens to be my least favorite of the eight Paramount distributions. But that wouldn't be enough to prevent me from attending this screening if it was happening in my backyard. Incidentally, there was a screening of Jason Takes Manhattan in my backyard earlier this month. It happened to fall on one of two weekends that I was out of town, and I'm still incredibly bitter about it.

At any rate, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood turned 25 this year. So go celebrate with not just a 35mm print but also an introduction and brief Q&A with the film's editor, Barry Zetlin.

By now I fully expect any self-respecting horror fan in the Los Angeles area to be familiar with the New Beverly Cinema. I've never been to LA, and even I know where it is at this point. For the one guy who has no idea: it's located at 7165 West Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, one block west of La Brea. This screening is hosted by Brian Collins of Badass Digest (and Horror Movie a Day). For more info visit the New Beverly Cinema website or check out Horror Movie a Day.

You can also purchase tickets right now by heading to Brown Paper Tickets.

Cameras About to Roll on Never Been Pinned

    0
    0

Pink SockLoyal readers might remember a short film that I raved about last year called Pink Sock (review here). The creative team behind that little depravity is back, and this time they're delivering feature length madness!

    From the Press Release
Josh Schneider of Walking Hate Machine Productions announced pre-production on a new feature film today, with a hopeful release date of fall 2014. Never Been Pinned promises to deliver laughs as well as gratuitous amounts of gore. Shooting will occur throughout Lowell, Ayer, Shirley, Fitchburg, and Worcester, MA.

Schneider has already begun casting the "mockumentary" with newcomers Jay Ford (as lead Darryl 'Chappy' Chapman), Brian Rourke (as sex offender Carl "Wolf" Buckley), and Ken Sears (as the documentary's director).

    Synopsis
A film crew follows the plight of perennial loser Darryl Chapman in his quest to enter the Olympics as a Greco-Roman wrestler. Bouts of extreme violence on the mat and his love of big women stand in the way of his dreams.

Schneider plans for a "guerilla style" shoot based on his script, which leaves ample room for improvisation. His previous short film, Pink Sock, a festival favorite, is still a possibility for adaptation into a feature film. "(Producer) John MacDonnell and I have written a truly warped script. We plan on discussing the production further later this summer and possibly putting the script in some festivals," Schneider wrote. "But right now Chappy: Harder Than Fuck* is my main focus." (*The film's original title.)

Those who think WHMP is stepping outside their normal realm with a comedy about mustached weirdos in singlets need not worry. Schneider promises copious amounts of the red stuff. "A majority of the budget is dedicated strictly to FX." To emphasize this, Schneider has enlisted the help of make-up/FX artist Lindsey Hunneman, whose love of gore is prevalent in her work on Walking Hate Machine Production's 2008 short Zombie Klaus 2. Stay tuned to Never Been Pinned on Twitter (@NBPMovie) for updates on the film's progress, cast/crew calls, and pictures/video from set.

Walking Hate Machine Productions started in 2007 before shooting the short film Zombie Klaus, a Christmas meets cannibal comedy. Tromadance 2011 audiences witnessed the New Jersey/New York premiere of the Hennenlotter inspired, original butt-slug film "Pink Sock. The short was produced in association with Razorville Productions.

I'm pretty excited for this one. If you need an indication of what to expect from this wildly enthusiastic and talented group of creative gorehounds, check out their Pink Sock website, which is not safe for work!

Stay tuned, folks, and we'll bring you more as it rolls in.

Gareth Edwards Looking to Destroy All Monsters in Godzilla Sequel

Gareth Edwards Looking to Destroy All Monsters in Godzilla SequelSorry, what's that? Nope, still can't hear you. The sound of angels singing is far too loud. In what is probably the best damned news of the day (or week), Godzilla director Gareth Edwards recently discussed which direction he'd like to go in for the inevitable sequel.

With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters,” Edwards tells Screen Rant. “I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe; I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira."

    Godzilla

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard T. Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Patrick Sabongui, Yuki Morita, Brian Markinson, Juliette Binoche, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, C.J. Adams, and Ken Watanabe star.

Gareth Edwards is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are serving as executive producers alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, Godzilla will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. Legendary Pictures is a division of Legendary Entertainment.

Slated to open on May 16, 2014, the film is expected to be presented in 3D.

According to THR Alien and Life of Pi attractions will co-exist in a new theme park planned by 20th Century Fox. The 25-acre park is set to open in Malaysia in 2016, said Fox Consumer Products and Resorts World Genting in a joint statement. Other franchises like Ice Age, Rio and Night at the Museum will be featured.

The park will be located at the current site of the Genting Outdoor Theme Park, whose facilities will be getting a roughly $125 million upgrade beginning in September. The park plans to create more than 25 rides based on Fox films across all genres. An animatronic parade featuring a mashup of all the characters is also planned.

Spawn Reboot Still in the Works with Big Interest from Jamie Foxx

    0
    0

Syfy Finds Working with Jamie Foxx to be HorrifyingFor at least the last four years, if not longer, every now and then a story leaks out about Todd McFarlane's long talked about Spawn remake, and the last time we heard from him, he mentioned an Academy Award-winning actor waiting in the wings. Out of Comic-Con came a hint of who that might be.

Movies.com was chatting with Jamie Foxx about his first appearance in a superhero movie as the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (due out May 2, 2014), and another comics-based character came up. When discussing projects he's trying to make happen, Foxx mentioned an adaptation of Spawn.

"Spawn is one, yeah," said the versatile actor. "And Mike Tyson. Those are two roles I would just love to do. I'm aggressively pursuing them."

Foxx's comments reminded us of the last time we heard from McFarlane himself back in February of this year:"I continue writing pages here and there," he said. "I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine. The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life."

Could the stars finally aligning? Stay tuned... again.

TCA Summer 2013 Press Tour: NBC Rebooting Rosemary's Baby and Stephen King's Tommyknockers The Television Critics Association's Summer 2013 Press Tour is in full swing, and today it's NBC's turn to share some news. With the recent success of "Hannibal" and "Bates Motel," is it any wonder they're talking more short-form series based on popular horror titles?

The network is in early development on a handful of new projects, including a “Rosemary’s Baby” miniseries along with “Stephen King’s Tommyknockers.” (They also announced a behind-the-scenes look at Hillary Rodham Clinton and “Plymouth,” based on the epic story of the Mayflower’s landing in America.)

    Excerpts from the Press Release:
“Rosemary’s Baby” is a four-hour updated retelling of the bestselling novel by Ira Levin that was later adapted as a feature film about devil worship and the complex relationship between a young husband and wife. In the new version the couple lives in Paris, where this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds. Lionsgate is the production company. Scott Abbott (“Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,” “Winchell”) will serve as writer on “Rosemary’s Baby.” Executive producers are Joshua Maurer, David Stern, Perri Kipperman, and Alix Witlin.

“Stephen King’s Tommyknockers” is based on the renowned author’s chilling 1987 novel about how the residents of a small Maine town deal with what they believe is an alien spacecraft that has landed nearby. Executive producers are Frank Konigsberg and Larry Sanitsky. Emmy Award winner Yves Simoneau (“Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”) is attached to direct.

Look for more on both of these projects soon as well as further news from the TCA Summer 2013 Press Tour.
