Broadchurch's David Bradley Replacing John Hurt in FX's The Strain

Broadchurch's David Bradley Replacing John Hurt in FX's The StrainIf you watched the stellar "Broadchurch," you'll surely recognize the expressive face of David Bradley, who has just signed on for a key role in FX's upcoming "The Strain," replacing the equally recognizable John Hurt.

The casting switch was announced just one day after FX gave a series order for the project, which is executive produced by "Bates Motel's" Carlton Cuse. Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan (co-authors of the novel on which the show is based) co-wrote the pilot, which del Toro also directed.

Cuse will serve as showrunner and writer. Gary Ungar will also executive produce the FX Productions series.

The story centers on Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Bradley, who played Jack Marshall in British series "Broadchurch" and Argus Filch in the Harry Potter franchise, will take on the role of Professor Abraham Setrakian. A Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. after World War II, Abraham now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers -- if anyone will listen.

Hurt was previously set to play the role, but per THR, producers and FX Productions opted to recast for an unspecified reason.

"The Strain," aiming for a July 2014 debut for its 13-episode first season, also stars Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, and Miguel Gomez. Production will begin later this month in Toronto.

IDW Announces Live-Action Pantheon TV Series and Kill Shakespeare Board GameBack in April of 2010 we announced the first issues of IDW Publishing's Kill Shakespeare and Pantheon, and coincidentally this week some news involving both properties has arrived with one becoming a board game and the other being adapted as a TV series.

Kill Shakespeare Board Game Description:
IDW Games has signed J.K. Woodward and Dave Dorman to be the art team for its launch title, Kill Shakespeare. Woodward's work has been a mainstay at IDW since 2005, where he helped relaunch Fallen Angel before moving on to various Star Trek series, including last year's bestselling Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who maxi-series. Dave Dorman is an Eisner Award-winning artist known for his extensive work in the fantasy genre, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and much more.

"We've long respected the art that both J.K. and Dave have produced over the years," said IDW CEO Ted Adams, "and having them both be a part of the initial offering from our IDW Games division only gives our coming Kill Shakespeare game that much more individual style and excitement."

Woodward has been brought on to create the art that will be featured on the playing cards for the game while Dorman will paint an original piece for the Kill Shakespeare box's art. This debut title has a planned release date of June 2014.

"We're excited to lead off the games division," said Kill Shakespeare writer and co-creator Conor McCreary. "The lore we've created for Kill Shakespeare is incredibly deep, and we think our fans will enjoy spending more time with the characters and world we've created for them."

Kill Shakespeare Comics Synopsis:
What Fables does for fairy tales, Kill Shakespeare does with the greatest writer of all time. This dark take on the Bard pits his greatest heroes (Hamlet, Juliet, Othello Falstaff) against his most menacing villains (Richard III, Lady Macbeth, Iago) in an epic adventure to find and kill a reclusive wizard named William Shakespeare.

IDW Announces Live-Action Pantheon TV Series and Kill Shakespeare Board GameIDW Releasing the First Issues of Four New Comic Series This Month

"Pantheon" TV Series Description:

While the story of "Pantheon" the series is under wraps, it involves Greek gods returning to the present day.

Slated as direct to series, "Pantheon" will boast Chiklis, Ted Adams, and David Ozer of IDW Entertainment and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs of Circle of Confusion as executive producers. Co-created by award-winning actor Chiklis, it was originally released as a five-issue comic book series by IDW Publishing.

Pantheon Comics Synopsis:

New Cast Photos and a Change in Premiere Dates for The Following Season 2With the success of its two-night premiere "event" for "Almost Human," Fox is trying a similar approach for the return of "The Following" and has moved the Season 2 premiere back one night to Sunday, January 19th, with another episode airing in its regular time period on Monday, the 20th.

In addition to announcing the schedule change, the powers-that-be have released a half dozen new character posters that include four familiar faces (Kevin Bacon as Ryan Hardy, James Purefoy as Joe Carroll, Valorie Curry as Emma, and Shawn Ashmore as Mike Weston) and two new ones (Connie Nielsen as Lily and Sam Underwood as Luke).

From the Press Release:
Last season’s No. 1 new series, "THE FOLLOWING," returns for its thrilling 14-week second season with a special two-night season premiere event, beginning Sunday, January 19 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the "NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME" (live, 6:00-10:00 PM ET). "The Following" Season 2:
Following the season finale of "Sleepy Hollow" at a special time on Monday, January 20, 2014 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), last season’s No. 1 new series, "THE FOLLOWING" (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), begins its 15-week uninterrupted second season.

Created by Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and starring Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon (X-Men: The Last Stand, Frost/Nixon) and James Purefoy (“Rome”), Season 2 will catch up with RYAN HARDY (Bacon) in the wake of a horrific new murder spree. The FBI calls on Ryan and MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore) to speak with the lone survivor, LILY (Connie Nielsen; “Boss,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), in order to help them solve the case. Ryan is reluctant to re-engage with the FBI but finds a valuable ally in his niece, MAX (Jessica Stroup, “90210”), an NYPD cop working in the Intel Division.

As the investigation proceeds, Ryan crosses paths with several complicated individuals, including LUKE (Sam Underwood, “Dexter”) and MANDY LANG (Tiffany Boone, Beautiful Creatures), which furthers his suspicion that JOE CARROLL's (Purefoy) reign of terror is far from over.

Other new faces joining the show this year include Valerie Cruz as an NYPD cop who works closely with Mike Weston, James McDaniel as an FBI agent, Keith Carradine as a friend of Ryan, Jacinda Barrett as Julia, a disarming and alluring woman with mysterious intentions, and Lee Tergesen as Kurt Bolen, a seemingly normal family man who may harbor a dark secret.

Lots of German Angst on Display in this New Anthology

$
0
0

Lots of German Angst on Display in this New AnthologyNo, German Angst is not a Uwe Boll biopic, although that would seem pretty damned appropriate. What we have here, kids, is a new anthology film featuring the works of Jorg Buttgereit (Nekromantik, Der Todesking), Andreas Marchall (Tears of Kali, Masks), and Michael Kosakowoski (Zero Killed).

In 1920 Germany became the most influential production location for fantastic films. Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s Nosferatu, Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Hands of Orlac, Paul Wegener’s The Golem earned the German cinema the label THE DEMONIC SCREEN (Lotte H. Eisner). German filmmakers told stories of the underworld beneath urban life, about the invasion of the subconscious. The frontiers between reality and dreams blurred and the fear of dark eros emerged. These masterpieces of German Expressionist cinema are the ancestors of the contemporary fantastic genre. Their influence is still felt in almost every modern film. With the Nazi dictatorship the genre was erased from the screens. In their Hollywood exile German directors continued to create some of the most popular horror classics, while in Germany the tradition was broken: after WWII the film industry concentrated on public-funded comedies and social drama.

But in the age of the Internet, when UNDERWORLD and COUNTERWORLD have taken on new meaning, the time is right to relaunch THE DEMONIC SCREEN.

Synopsis
FINAL GIRL by Jörg Buttgereit
A beautiful young girl wakes up in a Berlin flat one morning. In the bedroom next door, a half-naked middle-aged man lies strapped to the bed. The girl doesn't want to be the victim anymore...

ALRAUNE by Andreas Marschall
follows the nocturnal trip of an urban digital native into the world of a secret fetish society, which promises the best sex ever - through the magic of the Mandragora plant. But the transgressive experience has horrible side effects: he is confronted with a monstrous and deadly manifestation of his own sexual obsessions.

MAKE A WISH by Michal Kosakowski
depicts a powerful “if-only” scenario in which a young deaf-mute couple living in Berlin are attacked by a group of hooligans. However, they are in possession of a mysterious talisman that has already changed the course of history. The victims manage to turn the tables on their assailants by way of wishful thinking and wreak a terrible revenge, albeit paying a heavy price.

Fan Attempts to Re-write the Final Season of Dexter, Fails

$

Dexter Heading to Netflix Instant Beginning on HalloweenDread regulars know that I'm one of the few who absolutely loved the finale of "Dexter." I'll make no concessions about the final season being rather lackluster, but the show ended its run in a way that was both poetic and fitting for the titular character. Regardless, here's a fan-made proposition for the final season.

This wannabe Red Letter Media video offers some interesting ideas, but it's a far too high-level overview for us to say whether or not it would've worked any better. After all, if you put the concepts behind season 8 on paper (a jilted serial killer gets fixated on Dexter because he has all the things missing from his life), you've got some good stuff as well. The problem is making it interesting on a week-to-week basis, which is where the final season really dropped the ball (well, that and having Deb forgive Dexter completely at the end of episode 5 - still the worst moment in the series).

This proposition ends the show exactly where it started, which means there isn't much of a journey for these characters.

At any rate, you can head over to YouTube to check out Fibr3Optix's video by clicking here (embedding was disabled). I honestly had to watch it twice because the first time I kept counting all the ways he ripped off RLM's Plinkett reviews.

Norman Reedus Involved in the Crow Reboot?

$

Norman Reedus Involved in the Crow Reboot? We don't know much about Relativity's upcoming Crow reboot, a project that has already been plagued by legal issues and negative screenplay reactions. All we know for sure is that Luke Evans will take flight as the titular vengeance-seeker, and director F. Javier Gutierrez is looking to stay very faithful to the original comics.

All sounds good to me so far, and this latest rumor sounds even better.

According to the website Schmoes Know, "Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus is being eyed to play a character named James. According to their sources, he is the top choice to play the character, though we have no way of knowing just who this James fellow is. Perhaps one of the bad guys that Draven goes after? Now that I'd like to see!

This is of course only a rumor at this point, so take it with a grain of salt. The site also reports that Kristen Stewart was at one point considered for a part, but the producers and studio apparently feared that she wouldn't be able to attract an audience.

The film is being produced by Ed Pressman, Kevin Misher, Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh, and Jeff Most. Exec producers include Relativity’s president Tucker Tooley, The Weinstein Co.’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein, and Farah Films’ Dan Farah.

Are Portions of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla Going to Be Set in 1954?

$

Are Portions of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla Going to Be Set in 1954?Godzilla this, Godzilla that. While I don’t consider myself the biggest fan of the radiation-spewing kaiju (I do love the old school NES game, though), the constant teasing of Godzilla in Gareth Edwards’ forthcoming 2014 adaptation has me beyond intrigued.

The other day the cover of a tie-in book called “Godzilla: With Light and Sound,” was released, with many movie sites speculating as to whether or not it was the final design of the iconic creature we will see in 2014. Today, however, it was learned that via an interview with cinematographer Seamus McGarvey on Pushing Pixels that portions of the upcoming film will be set in 1954.

"PP: Shooting on film had all the imperfections of the analog medium, from the lens distortion to all the mechanical parts to the grain of the film itself, while capturing on digital sensors is much more exact and, to a certain degree, lifelessly perfect. Do you see it as a certain magic that will be gone from the moviegoing experience?

Seamus: It is, and I did like those aberrations. We can still preserve this with lenses, for instance, that are now more vital as we put them in front of the sensor. On “Godzilla” I used the old C series anamorphic lenses, and for the section in 1954 I used really old vintage lenses from the early 1960s. They took the edge off of the very vivid, sharp sensors, and gave it a distant period feel. That’s exciting as glass is coming back in terms of lending difference to each project that we do. It’s nice to be able to interfere with image, to sort of mess it up a bit."

Now, as someone who hasn’t watched a Godzilla movie since I was…I don’t know, ten (I’m 31 now), I had to look up the significance of the date (it was the year the original Godzilla was released). I was then chastised by Uncle Creepy for not knowing this, and now I feel obligated to have a Godzilla marathon to atone for my sins.

Help Fund Don't Look in the Basement: Part 2In 1973, S.F. Brownrigg directed a low-budget horror flick called Don't Look in the Basement, which oftentimes hit theaters alongside Last House on the Left, on a double-bill. Now 40 years later, Browrigg's son Anthony is intent on continuing the story, and he needs your help to do so.

The script for Don't Look in the Basement: Part 2 has been completed, and Anthony Browrigg has taken to Indiegogo to raise the funds needed to cover shooting expenses, which include blood and makeup effects. Brownrigg says he's already got $5,000 to work with, and only needs another $30,000 before the cameras can start rolling.

The film will pick up after the events of Don't Look in the Basement, following the character of Sam around 40 years after he and his fellow asylum inmates ran amok. Sam is moved to a new asylum, where strange things begin happening once more.

Brownrigg wants to film the sequel in the same location as the original, and original star Camilla Carr has agreed to a cameo.

If any of this interests you, you can head over to the Don't Look in the Basement: Part 2 Indiegogo page, where you can donate and score yourself some cool perks!

For gamers that just want to have a fun time with their friends, they can work together in Garden Ops battling off waves of zombies on the attack.

On Xbox One, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare includes two extra modes, including local cooperative split screen and Boss Mode. With split screen, players can team up with a friend on the couch to fight against an endless horde of zombies. In Boss Mode, gamers can utilize their Kinect or a SmartGlass device in any of the other gameplay modes to support their teams. Players have a top-down view of the battlefield and can help out their teammates with intel, health drops, revive stations, and explosive artillery strikes.
