B-Sides: Witches Are a Dangerous Type in The Craft

B-Sides: Witches Are a Dangerous Type in The CraftRemember the band Letters to Cleo? If so, odds are you grew up in the 1990s. Few bands scream “Nineties” like Letters to Cleo. They were a perfect choice to provide a B-Sides for a motion picture about teenage witches just learning their craft.

Back before there was a television channel that filled up its airwaves with show after show about attractive teenagers coming to grips with the good and bad aspects of their supernatural powers, there was a movie entitled The Craft that was pretty much a progenitor to everything The CW network broadcasts on a daily basis today.

The Craft told the story of four high school girls (Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True) that dabble in the dark arts and develop witchy abilities that at first benefit them and then threaten to destroy them when one goes mad with power.

Letter to Cleo's cover of The Cars'“Dangerous Type” is featured prominently during a montage in which the happy-go-lucky teen witches flaunt their newfound supernatural confidence. It’s a happy, peppy moment before things go to hell and they come to realize why most young Goths of the era preferred music by Marilyn Manson and Korn.

The Weinsteins Entering a New Dimension with TV Projects Based on The Mist and Sin City

The Weinsteins Entering a New Dimension With TV Projects Based on The Mist and Sin CityFor better or worse the Weinsteins have kept some of our favorite film franchises alive and kicking with their horror arm, Dimension. Now the company Bob and Harvey built is ready to turn its attention to the small screen.

Bob Weinstein revealed some rather interesting info recently to The New York Times. Weinstein said he was developing original projects that would be in tune with his horror and action oriented Dimension brand, along with several shows based on movies he has overseen for the company. He is preparing a pilot based on the “Scream” films for MTV, for instance, and developing a proposed 10-part series with Frank Darabont based on Dimension’s film version of Stephen King’s “The Mist.” That's not all though as he is also hoping to quickly follow the August release of the film Sin City: A Dame to Die For, directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, with a “Sin City” television series from Mr. Miller and Mr. Rodriguez.

How they will fare on TV is anyone's guess, but one thing is certain: The horror genre has never been hotter on the old boob tube!

Sin City: A Dame to Die For will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on August 22nd, 2014. Stay tuned.

Will Spike Lee Do the Right Thing in Poster Art Dispute?

Will Spike Lee Do the Right Thing in Poster Art Dispute? It's been a tough weekend for Spike Lee's Oldboy (review). Not only is the film getting hammered at the box office, expected to rake in only around $2 million, but the alleged stolen poster art fiasco is just adding to the negativity surrounding the film.

We told you here about designer Juan Luis Garcia and his artwork for the Spike Lee remake. Essentially, he designed some concepts for the film, the ad agency handling the movie told him that Spike loved a few of the designs and that they would be used as key art, but when it came time to pay Garcia for his work, the agency balked but decided to use some strikingly similar artwork. You can see the examples below.

Garcia's poster concepts
Oldboy

Garcia's key art concept
Oldboy

Image from Lee's social network with his copyright on Garcia's poster concepts
Oldboy

Shocked by the usage of his artwork, Garcia penned an extremely respectful open letter to Spike Lee on his blog.

Once made aware of this situation, Spike tweeted the following:

Lee then followed up his above comment with a user who questioned him on Lee's Instagram account stating:

"Why Should I Pay Someone Who I Never Met Nor Had Any Contact With Ever? He Never Made Any Deal With Me. Why Don’t You Pay Me For Your Stupid Text On Thanksgiving Day?”

Given Lee's responses, there are only two possible ways to take those remarks: Either he didn't even read Garcia's letter or he just doesn't care, the latter of which is unlike Lee given he's always been a champion of the little guy. That last remark, though? That's like telling a restaurant owner you won't pay your dinner bill because you don't know the chef who cooked your meal.

In an email to The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday, Garcia said he hoped Lee could help him resolve the situation with the ad agency without taking any legal action. He said he wasn't naming the ad agency because Lee knew "exactly who" he was talking about.

"I don't want to sue anyone, it's not in my nature, but if that's what it comes down to, so be it," he wrote in the email. "I'm thrilled he liked the posters and hope they continue using them, but I need to be renumerated."

Now we're not saying Garcia is telling the absolute truth in this situation, nor are we defending Lee in any way. The truth is we don't know, but we do hope that Lee will at least look into (or have someone look into) Garcia's claims. After all... one should always do the right thing. Right, Spike?

Starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley, Oldboy was directed by Spike Lee from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison, and Nathan Kahane. It is in theatres now.

Synopsis
OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of Joe Doucett, a man who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, for no apparent reason. When he is suddenly released without explanation, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him, only to discover that the real mystery is why he was set free.

Rest in Peace: Paul Walker

Rest in Peace Paul WalkerIn truly sobering, sad, and tragic news, another star has been taken from us all too soon. This one WAY before his time. It's with a heavy heart that we report the death of Paul Walker, age 40, as the result of a fiery auto wreck in California.

TMZ broke the news. Walker was in California attending a charity car show in Santa Clarita, which is just north of Los Angeles, for the Philippines typhoon relief effort.

The actor's Facebook page has now posted an official announcement:

It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. - #TeamPW

Walker touched our genre just a couple of times: once in 2000's The Skulls, but more notably in 2001's Joy Ride, a film that has gone on to spawn several sequels. Though he's made many films in his short career, he will forever be remembered for the role of Brian O'Conner in the extremely popular Fast & Furious franchise, which is currently shooting the latest chapter under the direction of James Wan (The Conjuring).

At this time we would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Walker's many friends and family members. You'll always be remembered, sir. Godspeed.

Written and directed by Fred Terling, Croaker stars Valerie Gatto, Marty Patterson, Ron Russell, Josh Dean, Ben Grance, Jimmy Star, Lindarae Schmidt, Bryden McCurdy, Amberleigh Miller, Jennifer Obed, Bob Braund, George Richardson, Barbara Lechene, Tim Gross, Shawn Kelly, and Miranda Schry as the creature the Vodnik.

To learn more, visit the official Croaker website and "like"Croaker on Facebook.

Synopsis
Florian Sirko and his one-time love Macy Patterson face a problem. A curse was originally cast from the attack of Haidamark Cossacks on Nemirov, Poland, in 1648, spawning a mythological creature known as the Vodnik. This curse now plagues the Sirko family, and the citizens of his town are paying with their souls. Macy is of course hesitant to believe urban legend, as is local County Sheriff Ben Cade, who suspects Florian is dealing with the grief of losing his brother in a more sinister way.

Running parallel to the story, George Butler III and Teddy Marsh are two culinary masters of a local greasy spoon diner trying to perfect the art of buffalo frog legs. George inherited the establishment from his Uncle Corey, who was the other boy with Dimi, Florian and Macy on the fateful day of Dimi’s disappearance 20 years prior. George is convinced that a strange, larger than life creature and his frog companions are stalking him and wants payback.

As the two storylines head for a collision, both protagonists realize the only way to break the curse and send the Vodnik back to hell is for it to collect 10 souls. The problem? The creature has its eye on one final soul: Macy.

Mother Nature Gets Nasty in New Horror FlickCamping. Maybe I'm too much of a diva in that I far prefer shitting in a bathroom rather than behind a tree outside, but nothing good ever happens on such expeditions. Unfortunately for our heroes in Mother Nature, finding the right spot to relieve themselves is the least of their troubles.

Below you'll find some stills, the trailer, and artwork for Johan Liedgren's latest film, Mother Nature, starring Phillip Roebuck, Shawn Belyea, Petra Wright, and Elliot Leidgren.

Synopsis
A father and son face increasingly vicious, erotic, and surreal harassment on a trip to the wilderness of eastern Washington. This is modern man gone camping, forced to find survival in the most primal of places - himself - and discover that survival never comes alone.

Peter and the Colosus Ready to Bring Giant Sized Monster ThrillsAround these parts we'll take a man in a suit any day over overblown and cartoonish CGI. That's exactly what we're gonna get, too, from indie filmmaker Mitchel Viernes' new flick, Peter and the Colossus.

The film stars Aubrey Robbins and Marcus Lavatai.

Synopsis
In the wake of her parents' sudden passing, Rachel Miller struggles to juggle two jobs while also taking care of her estranged younger brother, Peter. Traumatized from the loss, Peter refuses to utter a single word, making a social connection with anyone else very difficult. After school each day, Peter walks through a forest on his way home in order to avoid any confrontation with the school bullies, and on the way he makes an unlikely friendship that teaches him how to let others in and even helps mend his relationship with Rachel.
