IDW Announces New Three-Issue Series from Steve Niles: Monster & Madman

IDW Announces New Three-Issue Series from Steve Niles: Monster & MadmanVisionary author and celebrated comic creator Steve Niles is returning to IDW in 2014 and bringing the most nefarious fiends with him. Debuting in March, Niles weaves together a grave team-up between Frankenstein’s monster and Jack the Ripper in the terrifying new series Monster & Madman.

Synopsis:
A lost soul, Frankenstein’s monster seeks refuge from his waking life but finds no comfort in the bitter harshness of his surroundings. He sets out to free himself from his lonely isolation, and during this journey he finds himself at the doorstop of a creature more sinister than he could have imagined, the madman Jack the Ripper.

“Niles reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “In the same way that Ozzy was always finding great new guitarists to bring his macabre visions to life, so too is Niles always finding amazingly talented and dynamically creepy new artists to bring his dark fantasies to life.”

Ryall added, “And yes, we know Niles is also shepherding another Frankenstein series in Frankenstein Alive, Alive with Bernie Wrightson. That one is still happening, with a third issue coming in April; is unrelated to this one; and happens whenever Bernie’s amazing and meticulous art for each issue is complete. All of us are very vested in that series as well as this one, and we’ve appreciated readers’ and retailers’ patience on Alive, Alive. M&M will nicely fill the gap between those issues, and the entire series will be complete before the first issue is released so there will be no waiting here. Monthly creepiness awaits!”

"I think this is the fifth or sixth time I've used the Frankenstein monster in a story. I've always been fascinated with Mary Shelley's creation, and I've found the creature lends himself to all sorts of new stories," says Steve Niles. "There were eleven White Chapel Murders. Only five of them were attributed to Jack the Ripper. I became obsessed with the idea of a ‘what if’ situation where these two monsters crossed paths.”

Joining Niles in this terrifying new series is Damien Worm, whose macabre style brings the undead to life. In addition to penciling, inking, and coloring the covers and interior pages, Worm will also be handling lettering chores on the three-issue series. Niles added, “I'm very excited to be working with Damien. He has that dark edge to his art I love for horror stories. I'm constantly impressed with just how macabre his images can be."

Another Stephen King Tale Coming to ABC and More Horror TV News

More Stephen King Tales Coming to TVThe horror on TV phenomenon continues with this announcement from ABC that they have not one, but two, tales of terror (one of which is based on the work of Stephen King) in the works via their boutique arm, Signature. Read on for details.

THR reports that a year after launching, the ABC Studios-based division is setting up shop all over town. The Tracy Underwood-fronted banner has projects in development at A&E, WE tv, and TBS with a potential straight-to-series Stephen King short story adaptation in the works at ABC.

The division, which Underwood was tapped to run in October 2012, focuses on selling to cable and emerging platforms for off-cycle and lower-cost programming.

Signature is readying "Grand Central", a potential straight-to-series order for summer 2014 from "Haven" writers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn. The drama is based on King's short story "The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates" and described as a character-driven procedural with a supernatural twist. The short, published in 2008 and collected in King's Just After Sunset, centers on a widow who answers a phone call from her husband who died two days earlier in a plane crash. The husband predicts two tragedies that later come true and helps his wife avoid death.

Next up is a psychological horror story/soap entitled "Strega," which is in the works at A&E with writer Joe Gangemi (Eliza Graves) via the Gotham Group. "Strega" is described as a psychological horror story that meets cul-de-sac soap about a young American family who hire an au pair from Italy only to discover that dark forces come along with her.

Judge Dredd Heads to the West Coast in New Miniseries Mega-City Two: City of Courts

Judge Dredd Heads to the West Coast in New Miniseries Mega-City Two: City of CourtsThis January, duty calls Judge Dredd to the West Coast in the destructive new miniseries Mega-City Two: City of Courts. Read on for the details of this latest chapter in the Judge's story.

After entering a partnership with Rebellion/2000 AD, IDW has explored Dredd’s past in Year One and taken him “Into the Cursed Earth” in his ongoing title, but with a truly unique creative team on Mega-City Two, Dredd will go up against the unfamiliar and depraved like never before!

Mega-City Two marks the comics-writing debut of Eisner Award-winning journalist and Dredd aficionado Douglas Wolk (Reading Comics). Art chores will be handled by powerhouse Ulises Farinas (TRANSFORMERS: Heart of Darkness, Catalyst Comix), whose precise linework showcases the oddities of Judge Dredd’s world in stunning detail. Rounding out the creative team, colorist Ryan Hill brings the incredible structure in Farinas’ work to life. Mega-City Two will also feature homage variant covers that pay tribute to iconic films with art by Joe Corroney, NAR!, E.J. Su, and more!

Synopsis:
In the year 2094, a secret mission puts Dredd behind the wheel of a Lawcruiser in Mega-City Two, the West Coast megalopolis that sprawls around what was once Los Angeles. And he’s about to discover that the rules—and the laws—are very different in a city where image is everything...

"Ulises, Ryan, and I are going to show you a vision of Dredd’s world that you’ve never seen before,"Wolk says. "We’re yanking the East Coast’s toughest lawman out of his element and plunging him into the bizarre, sunlit depths of post-apocalyptic California. There’ll be studio stars and cycle cultists, cartoon predators, and beachfront terrors—plus, of course, ultraviolence, musical numbers, and the occasional thrill-powered salute to Joan Didion."

“Mega-City Two remains a criminally under-explored facet of Dredd's world,” said 2000 AD/Rebellion Editor-in-Chief Matt Smith, “and Doug and Ulises are having a ball crafting an environment, not only geographically, but ideologically the opposite of MC-1. Dredd is the proverbial fish out of water, and a lot of the fun comes from seeing that East Coast mentality clash with the laid-back attitudes of MC-2. Dredd fans shouldn't miss this really quite unique mini-series.”

Joe Carroll Lives in These Two New Promos for The Following Season 2Looking forward to the return of "The Following" next month on Fox? We're still disappointed that it went so off the rails in Season 1 but will be tuning in for at least the first few episodes of Season 2. If you're with us, here are two new teaser promos.

The acclaimed thriller starring Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy will unveil a special preview Sunday, January 19, immediately after the "NFC Championship Game" (live, 6:00 PM-CC ET), kicking off 15 heart-pounding weeks of uninterrupted episodes. The Season 2 premiere of "The Following" will air Monday, January 27 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), following an encore of the preview (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

"The Following" Season 2:
Created by Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and starring Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon (X-Men: The Last Stand, Frost/Nixon) and James Purefoy (“Rome”), Season 2 will catch up with RYAN HARDY (Bacon) in the wake of a horrific new murder spree. The FBI calls on Ryan and MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore) to speak with the lone survivor, LILY (Connie Nielsen; “Boss,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), in order to help them solve the case. Ryan is reluctant to re-engage with the FBI but finds a valuable ally in his niece, MAX (Jessica Stroup, “90210”), an NYPD cop working in the Intel Division.

As the investigation proceeds, Ryan crosses paths with several complicated individuals, including LUKE (Sam Underwood, “Dexter”) and MANDY LANG (Tiffany Boone, Beautiful Creatures), which furthers his suspicion that JOE CARROLL's (Purefoy) reign of terror is far from over.

Other new faces joining the show this year include Valerie Cruz as an NYPD cop who works closely with Mike Weston, James McDaniel as an FBI agent, Keith Carradine as a friend of Ryan, Jacinda Barrett as Julia, a disarming and alluring woman with mysterious intentions, and Lee Tergesen as Kurt Bolen, a seemingly normal family man who may harbor a dark secret.

The new series have a sci-fi tinge, but "The 100" especially, with its post-apocalyptic setting and the presence of Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “Scandal”), has our attention. And while "Star-Crossed" definitely seems to appeal to the more romantic types among us, it has a lot of familiar faces and could be worth watching for one or two episodes at least.

For more info visit "The 100" and "Star-Crossed" on CWTV.com, and follow "The 100" (@cwthe100) and "Star-Crossed" (@CWStarCrossed) on Twitter.

From the Press Release:
In February, the futuristic story of an alien/human romance begins with the premiere of "STAR-CROSSED" on Monday, February 17 (8:00-9:00pm ET). Then, In March, the human race returns to planet Earth in the post-apocalyptic adventure drama, "THE 100," which will premiere on Wednesday, March 19 (9:00-10:00pm ET), following hit drama "ARROW."

"THE TOMORROW PEOPLE" will transport to its new night and time on Mondays (9:00-10:00pm ET), beginning March 17, following "STAR-CROSSED." After the March 10th telecast, "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" will go on hiatus and will return to the schedule with original episodes at a date to be announced.

“STAR-CROSSED”
When Emery was 6 years old, an alien spacecraft crash-landed in her small town. Whether they came in peace or with more sinister intentions didn’t matter; a fierce battle erupted as humans fought for control over their new rivals, an alien species called the Atrians. In the midst of the conflict, Roman, a 6-year-old Atrian boy, found his way to a shed behind Emery’s house, where she protected him from harm, bringing him food, comfort – and friendship. In their brief time together, Emery and Roman forged a deep bond, but the authorities wasted no time tracking Roman down and capturing him in a violent confrontation. Emery has grown up believing that Roman was killed that day.

Ten years later, the Atrians have been acclimated to life on Earth, but they are interned in a heavily-guarded camp known as the Sector to keep them separate from humans. Now, for the first time, a group of Atrian teens will enroll in a suburban human high school, with the goal of testing the feasibility of human/alien integration. The eyes of the nation and the whole world are fixed on this historical social experiment, an endeavor fraught with suspicion and fear. In the mayhem of the first day, Emery is amazed to learn that Roman was not killed by the authorities and is, in fact, one of the Atrian students. Their childhood bond is quickly rekindled – in a school and a society that distrusts everything about the Atrians, Emery and Roman have found each other again. However, their relationship is threatened by the small-mindedness of their respective communities and the political agendas of people in power. While the world around them rages with anger and prejudice, their bond becomes increasingly strong and increasingly dangerous. As an epic Romeo and Juliet romance unfolds, a violent encounter between Roman’s father and Emery’s father occurs in the Sector. Can Roman and Emery’s love – and peace between the species – survive?

The series stars Aimee Teegarden (“Friday Night Lights”) as Emery, Matt Lanter (“90210”) as Roman, Grey Damon (“The Secret Circle”) as Grayson, Natalie Hall (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Taylor, Malese Jow (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Big Time Rush”) as Julia, Titus Makin, Jr. (“Glee”) as Lukas, Chelsea Gilligan (“How I Met Your Mother”) as Teri and Greg Finley (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”) as Drake. "STAR-CROSSED" is from Ole Productions, Isla de Babel SL, and 360 Powwow in association with CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Meredith Averill (“The Good Wife,” “Life on Mars”), Josh Appelbaum (“Life on Mars,” Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Bryan Furst (Daybreakers, Tough Trade), Sean Furst (Daybreakers, Tough Trade), Daniel Gutman (“Dance!,” “12 Corazones”), Andre Nemec (“Life on Mars,” Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Scott Rosenberg (“Life on Mars,” “October Road”), and Richard Shephard (“Golden Boy,” “Ringer”). Mid-Season Premiere Dates Announced for The 100 and Star-Crossed; The Tomorrow People Moving to Mondays“THE 100”
Ninety-seven years ago, nuclear Armageddon decimated planet Earth, destroying civilization. The only survivors were the 400 inhabitants of 12 international space stations that were in orbit at the time. Three generations have been born in space, the survivors now number 4,000, and resources are running out on their dying “Ark” - the 12 stations now linked together and repurposed to keep the survivors alive. Draconian measures including capital punishment and population control are the order of the day, as the leaders of the Ark take ruthless steps to ensure their future, including secretly exiling a group of 100 juvenile prisoners to the Earth’s surface to test whether it’s habitable.

For the first time in nearly a century, humans have returned to planet Earth. Among the 100 exiles are Clarke, the bright teenage daughter of the Ark’s chief medical officer; Wells, son of the Ark’s Chancellor; the daredevil Finn; and the brother/sister duo Bellamy and Octavia, whose illegal sibling status has always led them to flaunt the rules. Technologically blind to what’s happening on the planet below them, the Ark’s leaders — Clarke’s widowed mother, Abby; the Chancellor, Jaha; and his shadowy second in command, Kane — are faced with difficult decisions about life, death, and the continued existence of the human race. For the 100 young people on Earth, however, the alien planet they’ve never known is a mysterious realm that can be magical one moment and lethal the next. With the survival of the human race entirely in their hands, THE 100 must find a way to transcend their differences, unite, and forge a new path on a wildly changed Earth that’s primitive, intense, and teeming with the unknown.

The series stars Eliza Taylor (newcomer) as Clarke, Paige Turco (“Person of Interest,” “Damages”) as Abby, Thomas McDonell (“Suburgatory”) as Finn, Eli Goree (“Emily Owens, M.D.”) as Wells, Marie Avgeropoulos (50/50) as Octavia, Bob Morley (newcomer) as Bellamy, Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United, “Arrow”) as Cece, Christopher Larkin (“Squad 85”) as Monty, and Devon Bostick (“Aim High”) as Jasper, with Isaiah Washington (Blue Caprice, “Grey’s Anatomy”) as Chancellor Jaha and Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “Scandal”) as Kane. Based on the upcoming book series by Kass Morgan, "THE 100" is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Matthew Miller (“Human Target,” “Chuck”), Jason Rothenberg (Twilight Zone feature), Bharat Nalluri (“Torchwood,” “Emily Owens, M.D.”), Leslie Morgenstein (“The Vampire Diaries”), and Gina Girolamo (“The Secret Circle”). The pilot was directed by Bharat Nalluri.

Uncle Creepy's Blu Christmas Buyer's Guide 2013The holiday shopping season is officially upon us, and that means it's time to take a look back at the last year of Blu-ray releases to help you decide which packages will have the horror fans on your list grinning from ear-to-ear!

With the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 3, and really cheap standalone players all Blu-ray ready, there's never been a better time to make that jump into high definition. If you've been holding out, throw caution to the wind, kids! Blu is where it's at! If you already own the DVD of your favorite flick, is there a need to replace it with a Blu-ray? I'm here to answer all of your questions in the annual...

Uncle Creepy's Blu Christmas Buyers Guide!

Before we get into my picks, let's take a second to explain how I rated them. They're broken down into three categories:

Can't Miss -- Must Haves: These are the cream of the crop! The purchases that are guaranteed to bring a smile to someone's face. Items no one with the tech should be without.

Good Buys: A rock-solid purchase. Sure, there's nothing really to die for about these Blu-rays, but be confident in the fact that you're spending your cash on the goods that you're hoping for.

Serious Hi-Def Junkies Only: Here's where things get a bit sketchy. These Blu-rays were included for a few reasons -- Either the movies suck, the transfer and sound aren't up to snuff, or the included supplemental material (or lack thereof) don't do much to keep these ships afloat.

Click on any of the reviews listed below to find out exactly what you're getting and to find the link with which to order them. I've also included at the very end a few other recommendations that either came in too late to be reviewed or are not quite horror films but we love 'em anyway.

So, without further ado, let's get cooking!

Dread Central Presents - The Top 10 Horror Fan FilmsThere’s a general misconception among casual horror fans that any flick produced by a fellow fan, or amateur, isn’t worth the time it takes to type in w-w-w-.-y-o-u-t-u-b-e-.-c-o-m.

Bona fide horror hounds have been tuned in to these inspired projects for years, understanding and respecting the effort devoted to a genuine passion piece. The detractors tend (this isn’t a rule carved in stone, mind you) to be the guys and gals who catch a macabre flick once every week or so, wiling to confess their affinity for the genre, but perhaps not devoted enough to qualify as a certified freak for terror, who haven’t taken the time to study these ambitious pictures.

The truth is, anyone who can openly acknowledge their love for horror can potentially find some brilliant fan productions, regardless of how dedicated one may or may not be. Sometimes fans just need a nudge in the right direction, and that’s what we’ve set out to make happen on this fine Friday the 13th. We’re giving you the proverbial nudge.

Dread Central Presents - The Top 10 Horror Fan Films

It’s time to proceed in a bit of excavating. We’re unearthing some of the finest flicks created by Average Joes, who – based on their technical abilities alone – really don’t seem to be all too average at all. There are some legitimately engrossing fan films to be discovered, and this list should serve as an adequate “beginner’s guide” to must-see pictures you never knew existed.

10 - Halloween: Resurgence– This is a strong offshoot of the Halloween franchise that plays out as though it’s just another sequel, featuring zero characters directly related to the long-running series. You won’t spot Tommy Doyle, or Laurie Strode, or Sam Loomis in this pic. You won’t watch as the terror unravels in the serene suburbs of Haddonfield, Illinois, either. You will however take a trip to Smith’s Grove Santarium, where Michael goes buck-wild on a group of 30-somethings sniffing around where they don’t belong. Director Darren Jones siphons some spirited performances from this group of amateurs, and he’s got a sound understanding of basic film mechanics. The picture isn’t all too stylized, but it is quite clean. Michael’s mask looks awesome, and Jones himself does a great job of physical acting, as he dons the famed Myers getup. Throw in a few well-timed jump scares, an eerie shot or two, and some fun tributes to the series (I got a major kick out of the Akkad Gas station) and you’ve got one of the finest Halloween fan films ever shot.

9 - Evil Dead in 60 Seconds– The truth is, Evil Dead in 60 Seconds is more trailer than short film. However, the guidelines for Vancouver's Virgin Radio Film competition specified that the full picture be recreated in 60 seconds, thus the fan “film” classification. Directors Gigi Saul Guerrero and Luke Bramley not only capture the essence and storyline of the cult classic pic, they also make it look awfully damn good! This is a highly refined little project with genius cuts, solid special effects and a mighty fine stand-in for Bruce Campbell. You’ll spot a number of these Evil Dead in 60 Seconds entries online, but this one tickles the fancy in a special way.

8 - Marble HornetsMarble Hornets isn’t technically a film, it’s a series of shorts that form an often disjointed, but nonetheless interwoven examination of the mythical Slender Man. With 80 shorts already released, Alex Kralie’s ongoing tale works wonders in casting a shroud of darkness over the human psyche. The jarring sequences in this series are near countless and while it has a few things working against it, the stars have come quite close to completely aligning for the crew behind this gem. If you can watch these shorts in succession, and walk away feeling as though you were deprived — in any way — of legitimate chills, you may not have been paying attention. Marble Hornets is what quality fanfare and found footage is really all about.

7 - Legends: A Friday the 13th Tale– Gerald J. Godbout III’s homage to Jason Voorhees is riddled with minor flaws (some, I believe, are a direct result of editing), but it’s ballsy, and I quite enjoyed it. In an ironic twist, we get a predominately ethnic group of protagonists, and a handful of them kick ass, not to mention survive. For decades the black man has surfaced in little more than minor bit parts when it comes to the Friday the 13th (an obvious tip of the cap goes out to Shavar Ross who portrayed Reggie “The Reckless” in the fifth Friday feature) series. But here, the white man takes to the backseat, and it is damn refreshing. When it comes to finance to payoff ratio, Legends is the star of this lineup. It looks as though very little monetary risk was taken while piecing the picture together, but there’re 40 fine minutes to enjoy here.

MORE Top 10 Horror Fan Films on the NEXT page!

6 - Batman: City of Scars– Why is a Batman flick making a horror-themed list? Because this specific Batman fan film totally and completely plays out like a very inspired indie genre piece, that’s why. City of Scars is insanely dark, pulls virtually zero punches and pits Batman against one of his greatest rivals: The Joker, who’s back to his mutilating ways for this slice of celluloid. Aaron Shoenke does a stellar job of keeping the Batman submerged in the same grisly world created by Christopher Nolan, and while this pic obviously lacks the budget of a Nolan flick, it delivers in a big, big way. Even if “superhero” flicks aren’t your thing, Batman: City of Scars just might be.

5 - 28 Days Later: The Rage– There’s no need to deceive anyone; The Rage doesn’t boast a profoundly moving storyline. In fact, it’s pretty much the same stuff we’ve seen from Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later). Having said that, there’re only so many directions to take when it comes to post-apocalyptic madness and zombie chaos. What director Carter Ferguson does perfectly is reconstruct the overall vibe of the franchise. The zombies are fast; the tone is bleak; the fight to survive is always frantic; the protagonists are constantly on edge, fully aware of their inevitable fate. This looks and feels as though it could easily be the launch of the next official 28 picture. As a fan of both films, I’d be more than game to tune in to a feature length picture helmed by Ferguson. This man gets it.

4 - Friday the 13th: Extraction– A relatively unique concept, respectable production values, sound onscreen performances and some nifty special effects work make this one of the finest Friday the 13th fan films in existence. That says a lot, given the fact that there must be 100 shorts of this ilk floating about the interweb. Most however, just don’t capture the essence of Jason Voorhees and the now firmly established mythos of the machete wielding maniac like Samuel Farmer and Corina Seaburn’s Friday the 13th: Extraction. This flick does virtually everything right. We’ve got a genuinely menacing Jason on hand, a new spin on the story with a new location and a new design to the core conflict, and – again – the effects are quite impressive (keep an eye out for the eye-socket pop gun scene... just plain awesome). When it comes to Friday the 13th fan films, you’d be hard pressed to find a superior effort.

3 - Hellraiser: No More SoulsNo More Souls starts on an awkward note. The camera slowly moves in on a dismal Pinhead, who laments about some wretchedness or another. He’s obviously a bit down and out... What better way to lift the spirits than summoning a few Cenobites to tear his body to shreds? That’s Pinhead’s offbeat, masochistic way of thinking, and holy crap is effective. This production looks stunning. Gary J. Tunnicliffe manufactures a very loyal Hellraiser aesthetic (even Pinhead looks convincing, despite the absence of Doug Bradley), and that’s no surprise. Gary isn’t exactly a stranger to Clive Barker’s genius invention; He’s handled makeup effects for about a half dozen Hellraiser films. He’s well versed in all things Cenobite related, and that connection with the story enables him to assemble a jarring short that must be seen.

MORE Top 10 Horror Fan Films on the NEXT page!

2 - Krueger: Another Tale from Elm Street– If you want to talk about disconcerting productions, you want to talk about Krueger: Another Tale from Elm Street. Director Chris R. Notarile has become something of a fan film aficionado, having tackled (in impressive fashion) such icons as Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Pinhead and Leatherface – to name but a few – but it’s his work with the nefarious Freddy Krueger that stands as his greatest achievement. And there’s a reason for that: Chris has uprooted the tale and taken fans back in time, opening up a whole new realm of fear on Elm Street. Fred’s still alive, having yet to enter the intersection that leads to a lynching at the hands of enraged parents. And we get a nasty examination of his behavior and habits, which as you might expect, are every bit as loathe worthy as his tendencies as a supernatural dream killer. But there’s something marginally more frightening about watching the man lure children into his lair where he reaches for the dreaded glove and... You see where we’re going. Amazing film that looks beautiful and chills right down to the bone marrow, Krueger: Another Tale from Elm Street borders on masterful.

1 - Welcome to Hoxford– An amalgamation of animation, wildly inventive visual effects and sleek live action, Julien Mokrani’s 20-minute Welcome to Hoxford is an engrossing piece of work. It’s a condensed reimagining, to say the least, but Mokrani remains as faithful as possible to Ben Templesmith’s riveting source material. The special effects, both visual and practical are top notch and the editing is spot on. To top it all off the flick features appearances by Jason Flemyng (Clash of the Titans, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Dexter Fletcher (Kick-Ass, Doom) and Arben Bajraktaraj (Taken, Harry Potter franchise), and they’re about as dedicated to their work as one could hope for. If you’re on the prowl for an extremely high quality lycanthropic tale, you absolutely must seek this beauty out. Hands down the greatest fan film I’ve ever seen!

A note to the loyal DC readers: If you feel I’ve omitted something special, or you’ve got some strong recommendations, don’t be bashful. After watching somewhere between 300-400 fan films in preparation for this article, I’m confident with my list, but I’m more than prepared to recognize the fact that something special may have slipped through the cracks, and I’m eager to devour more fan-fueled genius. There are a lot of stellar fan films out there. If it’s worth watching, and it’s not on this list, drop a line. I’d love the chance to unearth another beauty.

The Case for Tommy Jarvis: What Was Great About Jason’s Nemesis and Why He Should Face Him Again

Friday the 13th: A Case for Tommy JarvisThe Tommy Jarvis “trilogy” of Friday the 13th movies is among the franchise’s most popular. When looking at The Final Chapter, A New Beginning, and Jason Lives, it’s clear that we’re talking about three very different slasher movies—each with its own style.

They utilize the Tommy Jarvis protagonist in three very different ways, and there isn’t a massive character arc that strings them together, but they lend an air of continuity to a series that rarely bothered to have any.

Why does Tommy remain a consistent fan favorite? Examining the popular decisions of other franchises may help bring the issue into focus.

Surely we can agree that Dr. Loomis lends weight to the Halloween series as the boogeyman’s foil. He’s what every villain’s nemesis should be: resourceful, determined, and flawed. It’s this combination that I would argue makes him an enduring character. It’s never easy going after ”evil on two legs”, and yet he remains undeterred—despite numerous failures throughout the series. Loomis fails upward while trying to do the right thing, and it only adds to the history between Michael and him. As we reach the later films in the series, where Loomis has descended into full-on Captain Ahab mode, it feels like a logical progression after everything we’ve seen.

Friday the 13th: A Case for Tommy Jarvis

Conversely, most Nightmare on Elm Street fans agree that bringing Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) back into the fray was a wise decision for Dream Warriors after Freddy’s Revenge explored some drastically different avenues. Nancy will forever be remembered as one of the genre’s greatest heroines for her ability to beat Fred Krueger at his own game. And while she might’ve been unceremoniously killed off in the third film as a means of giving its titular heroes a trial by fire, it was nice to see her evolve and progress as a direct result of the events of the first Nightmare.

To be clear, Friday the 13th has never had a problem with likable final girls. Ask five Jason fans which is their favorite, and it’s entirely possible you’ll get five different answers (for the record, I’m team Melanie Kinnaman). But the series sort of refused to bring its heroines back in any meaningful way, and so we never had the benefit of watching how they evolved to deal with the Jason problem again.

But that changed with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. That’s not to suggest this was the result of meticulous planning by any means, but there was obviously enough potential within Tommy Jarvis to keep him around for a few movies. At last Friday the 13th was about to give Jason his own nemesis, and at the end of the trilogy we’ve got a character with a pretty interesting through-line. No one would ever accuse these films of offering rich character arcs, but Tommy is painted with enough broad strokes to make his arc across all three movies worthy of revisit.

It’s really hard to dislike him in The Final Chapter. He’s a young kid with an affinity for monster masks and video games, not above peeping on the beautiful women parading around in the nude next door, either. In short, he’s us: any young kid who watched these movies before they were old enough. He’s also the only one in his family with an excuse for not knowing that there have been brutal murders occurring on the lake where they live all weekend. Corey Feldman is great in this, and he probably has a lot to do with audiences getting in on the ground floor of the Tommy Jarvis movement. After all, he’s earnest and likable when a lot of kids in horror tend to be whiney and annoying. What’s great about The Final Chapter is that it’s unafraid to put him through some pretty terrifying paces as well. When I first saw this movie, I was much younger than Tommy is in the film, and I was constantly terrified of Jason smashing through my window to take me.

Friday the 13th: A Case for Tommy Jarvis

Tommy also figures out how to get at Jason’s psyche, dolling out the most uncompromising besting we’ve ever seen the big guy take. Not only do we like the kid, but the determination with which he protects his older sister is sort of touching.

For all the flak A New Beginning takes, give it credit for showing the emotional fallout of The Final Chapter—no matter how superficial it may be. One of the most hotly contested aspects is Tommy’s age jump. We don’t know how much time has passed between movies, but the casting of then 25-year-old John Shepard in a role previously played by then 14-year-old Corey Feldman certainly implies a considerable leap forward. I always thought that in A New Beginning he was supposed to be around 18-20 as I think it works best for the movie. It presents a long-suffering Tommy this way, whose torment shows no signs of receding.

This is the lowest point for him. He’s antisocial and prone to violent outbursts, and it’s perhaps unclear why he’s been deemed fit for a halfway house with a fuse that short (then again, precious few of the Pinehurst inhabitants are). Still, it’s a natural progression from the last movie, and the filmmakers were really smart to add the somewhat trivial "whodunit" element, since virtually everyone was certain that Tommy would be donning the hockey mask for all future installments. I distinctly recall my brother coming home from seeing The Final Chapter on opening weekend and telling me that “the little kid is going to be taking over for Jason in the next one.” And he was hardly alone in that sentiment; even New York Times critic Janet Maslin suspected as much in her menial review.

Again Tommy endures some traumatic stuff, and again we’re left wondering if he won’t really be hacking and slashing his way through the next installment. A New Beginning really wants to fan those speculative flames, doesn’t it? But after the emotionally despondent Tommy of A New Beginning, there’s really nowhere to go but up, right?

Friday the 13th: A Case for Tommy Jarvis

Writer/director Tom McLoughlin certainly seemed to think so, working off the mandate that the “real” Jason Voorhees had to be resurrected for this and all future sequels (the fans apparently didn’t like seeing a hockey mask with BLUE chevrons, regardless of the gigantic body count it delivered). McLoughlin isn’t interested in the temperamental psychology of Tommy Jarvis, propelling him instead into the role of intrepid hero. Yes, this is still a character haunted by his past (it’s what motivates him to seek out and destroy Jason once and for all), but he’s become Friday the 13th’s Abraham Van Helsing in the entry that so clearly owes a lot to the era of Hammer horror that inspired its director. Newfound heroism is perfectly suited to the character, and Thom Mathews wears it well. He’s determined to put a stop to Jason’s seemingly endless reign of terror, while failing upward in ways that would make Dr. Loomis proud. Sure he sparks Jason’s latest killing spree, but he also manages to get the sucker back to his rightful resting place, while saving the sheriff’s lovely daughter in the process.

Jason Lives is still a slasher film about a group of ill-fated camp counselors, but the added dimension of a dashing hero grows the series in an interesting direction. This is the audience’s third go ‘round with Tommy, and we’ve followed his journey from good-natured child to full-fledged hero. It’s pretty difficult not to side with him after all he’s been through, and we’re actually glad that he turned out pretty well (because it was looking dicey there for a while).

It’s a shame that Tommy was cast aside just as he had moved comfortably into the franchise’s “protector” role. The guy could spout doomsday gospel, follow Jason’s trail, and run afoul of all sorts of authorities who would rather forget the whole thing rather than lift a finger to help. Instead of Tommy, the The New Blood gave us Tina Shepard’s telekinesis, and while I quite liked Lar Park Lincoln in the role, I never had the emotional bond with her that I did with Tommy. After all, she was a one and done, and I spent the next few Fridays hoping they might wise up and bring him back. Especially when Jason went to hell.

Friday the 13th: A Case for Tommy Jarvis

But to this day, Friday the 13th never has brought him back, and that’s a tragedy. Paramount is readying the most dismal-sounding Friday the 13th yet for 2015, a found footage remake that tells me I probably don’t have to spend the next year and a half hoping that it’ll be any good. But the real shame of this is that we’re living in a time when audiences have almost come to expect more complicated mythologies. Hell, everything is about “shared universes” these days, not just comic book movies. Universal would like to pull this off with modern reinventions of their classic monsters, while The Terminator reboot aims to share its story between a new film series and a television show.

There has never been a better time to open up Friday the 13th a little more, and so it saddens me to hear that Paramount is taking the cheapest possible route for the series’ immediate future. I’m not saying that these movies should be big, epic stories, but there’s a great character like Tommy gathering dust on the bench, just begging to have some playtime. Nobody makes a Dracula without an iteration of Van Helsing, and even Rob Zombie insisted upon butchering the character of Dr. Loomis with his own Halloween bastardizations. Jason had a nemesis too, once upon a time. And we very much liked him.

    Can we have him back?

    Happy Friday the 13th
