Kyra Sedgwick-Produced Supernatural Medical Show Proof Given Pilot Order by TNT

Kyra Sedgwick-Produced Supernatural Medical Show Proof Given Pilot Order by TNTAnother horror-themed TV show was just given a pilot order, this time on TNT, which is re-teaming with its "The Closer" star Kyra Sedgwick on a supernatural medical drama called "Proof."

But this time it looks like Sedgwick, who also exec produced "The Closer," is staying strictly behind the camera.

Per Deadline, the pilot is being written by Rob Bragin ("Greek"), who will executive produce with Sedgwick; her manager, Jill Littman; and producer Tom Jacobson (Ladykillers). There are no plans for Sedgwick to star.

"Proof" centers on a skeptical, hard science, female surgeon who’s struggled with family issues including a tragic death. She is persuaded to investigate cases of reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, hauntings — all of it looking for verifiable proof — to try to answer one of life’s greatest questions: Is death truly the end, or is there something… beyond?

Not sure if this one is going to fall more on the supernatural or the drama side of the fence so we'll keep our ears open and let you know more as it seems relevant.

B-Sides: It's Yor’s World! He’s the Man!

$

B-Sides: We've Got a Bad Case of Dr. GigglesYor, the Hunter from the Future isn’t just a bad movie; it’s that special breed of stupendously fun bad that leaves a lasting impression, and nothing about Yor left more of an impression on me than its astounding, borderline incomprehensible, rock anthem theme song.

Reb Brown looks more like Fast Times at Ridgemont High’s Spicoli than any sort of prehistoric barbarian, running around the land before time in furry boots and loin cloth, setting out on a journey to learn the truth of his lineage.

In between romancing a sexy cave girl and a sexy space girl, Yor’s quest for fire will see him battling dinosaurs, Neanderthals, Dark Helmet look-a-like cyborgs, and futuristic spacemen living on an Atlantis-like island ruled by a goateed man in a black cloak called The Overlord, whom York eventually kills via impalement with a piece of a giant candy cane.

People always talk about how Hollywood should remake bad movies that possessed the elements needed for a good movie rather than constantly redoing great, classic movies that still hold up. Yor, the Hunter from the Future is precisely the kind of movie Hollywood should be remaking. You've got cavemen, spacemen, sorcery, dinosaurs, spaceships, laser guns, Vaderoids, and a hero who uses a pterodactyl as a hang glider. What more do you need?

How about one of the greatest bad movie theme songs of all time? Yep, you get that, too.

“Yor’s World”: the nearly indescribable, almost indecipherable Euro-Turkish rock anthem that opens and closes the movie as well as constantly heralding Yor’s triumph throughout the film in ways typically reserved for a b-movie soundtrack composed by Queen. What modern band could do justice to this song if ever there were a remake? Muse, perhaps? I’m drawing a blank.

Watch the video below with the lyrics included and marvel knowing those are the actual song lyrics and not the product of a new “Bad Lip Reading” video.

Pre-Screenings of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Send Chills Worldwide!Last night, Friday the 13th, 13 cities in the USA and 13 countries around the world got their first look at Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Even now, many hours removed from the closing credits, the screaming can still be heard. Paranormal Activity is back with a vengeance!

Let me be perfectly clear... The Marked Ones is in NO WAY a spin-off. This is 110% franchise canon, and if you're a fan of this series, this is the Paranormal Activity you've been dying to see. Questions are answered, the mythology is taken ten steps further, and when the witches show up, it's for a hell of a lot more than just to say "BOO." It's that damned good. We're talking balls to the wall fun and scares thrown at you relentlessly with an extreme amount of intensity! This flick delivers on all counts and is not to be missed. It's nothing short of a gift to fans. The in-theatre reaction to the movie was off the charts insane. My ears are still ringing!

That being said... if you were amongst the now scarred-for-life screamers that saw the movie last night, I implore you...

DO NOT SPOIL THE ENDING FOR ANYONE

Below you'll find some pictures from last night's San Diego screening along with some of the Dread Central contest winners who met up with us...

Those who dared to enter were treated to photo booths, prayer cards, t-shirts and glow sticks giveaways. "Monks" even recited a prayer of protection for all those in attendance; we only hope it worked... Here are some images of that!

UK Event Report and Image Gallery: 2013 Mayhem Horror Film Festival

UK Event Report: 2013 Mayhem Horror Film FestivalLast month we took a trip to Nottingham, England's cinephile haven Broadway Cinema for four days of eclectic genre programming at the 2013 Mayhem Horror Film Festival. Check in right here for a look at some of the sights and reviews from the East Midlands' premier horror fest.

The festival kicked off on Thursday 31st October with a special screening of director Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Puffball, taking place in the special environs of St. Mary's Church with Roeg himself in attendance to introduce and officially open this year's event.

Topping off the evening was Vincenzo Natali's underwhelming Haunter (review here).

While we weren't around for that particular evening's events, the following three days saw a schedule packed to the gills with guests, impromptu trivia-based giveaways, and screenings unfolding before and behind the Broadway's gorgeous red curtains, including:

- The cinematically sumptuous, but disappointingly perplexing The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears (review here)
- The excellent Delivery (review here) with director Brian Netto in attendance.
- Renaud Gauthier and Marie-Claire Lalonde's Discopath (review here)
- Gory low-budget 80s throwback The Demon's Rook (review here)
- Plodding, Euro-styled vampire melodrama Kiss of the Damned (review here)
- Elliot Goldner's unsettling and tense The Borderlands (review here), with director, cast, and producer Jen Handorf in attendance.
- Caradog James' dystopian techno-thriller The Machine (review here), with director James and producer John Giwa-Amu in attendance.
- Juan Carlos Medina's Painless (review here)
- A special BAFTA-sponsored screening of Jeremy Lovering's In Fear (review here) with cast and crew in attendance.
- This year's breakout festival success, Israeli filmmakers Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's astounding Big Bad Wolves (review here)

Amidst the new screenings, attendees of the festival were also treated to big screen renditions of re-mastered classics such as Ted Kotcheff's Australian masterpiece Wake in Fright and Tobe Hooper's classic space vampire yarn Lifeforce. Most surprising, and impressive, of all was the choice this year to present a screening of Tod Browning's silent 1927 classic The Unknown, starring the legendary Lon Chaney. Rather than taking the route of a canned or pre-recorded soundtrack for the film, Mayhem's organisers saw fit to enlist the services of local musicians '8MM Orchestra' to provide a live score for the entirety of the runtime – something which proved to be one of the most memorable, and remarkable, presentations seen at any of the UK's genre festivals this year.

On top of this, the Broadway's impressive bar also became the arena for counter-culture website Strange Things are Happening's David Flint to present his annual horror-themed quiz, 'The Flinterrogation', sporting a number of challenging queries to test the knowledge of those dedicated to the genre and looking to win a pack of thematic goodies.

Spread throughout the main features across the weekend was a plethora of short film offerings, including highlights such as Adrian Cardona and David Munoz's hilarious Fist of Jesus, Claymation master Lee Hardcastle's An Alien Claymation, Jordan Shankman's Tightening Our Belts, and Andrew Zuchero's head-popping The Apocalypse -- all of which are presented below for your entertainment!

All in all, 2013 proved an extremely strong year for Mayhem – a festival that we're hoping continues to go from strength to strength, and to which we shall definitely return! Keep your eyes on the Mayhem Horror Film Fest Facebook page for updates. Many thanks to both the organisers and the Broadway Cinema for having us along.

The Top 11 Home Invasions in Horror

The Top 11 Home Invasions in HorrorThere you are, tucked away sound and snuggly in your little bed. Counting sheep and drifting off to dreamland. The next thing you know, a stranger is in your house with nothing but bad intentions. To celebrate the release of Mischief Night, we bring you the Top 11 Home Invasions in Horror.

We could go on forever with the list of honorable mentions in this category. Films like The Desperate Hours, Kidnapped and High Tension (Haute Tension) come immediately to mind. As do Panic Room, You're Next, The Purge, The Aggression Scale and Funny Games. Hell, even Macaulay Culkin got terrorized by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci in Home Alone. Some on the list are traditional assaults and some are more unique, but we think we've got it narrowed down to...

The Top 11 Home Invasions in Horror

Black Christmas (1974)
All is calm, all is bright. Except for the fact that you've got a raving lunatic holed up in your attic! Black Christmas was a film that would set the tone for the slasher genre, which exploded in the late 70's and into the 80's. And what better time to set a home invasion film than Christmas, when everything is supposed to be at its most festive and peaceful. But what the sorority girls of Black Christmas learned was murderous maniacs have no calendar. A home invasion indeed, as not only did the killer break into the home, but he made himself quite comfortable inside. Check out the classic Black Christmas scene below.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
"What we were after now was the old surprise visit. That was a real kick and good for laughs and lashings of the old ultraviolent." And that was the motivation of Alex and his gang of droogs in the unforgettable film A Clockwork Orange. This movie featured incredibly brutal and unforgettable home invasions. Classic gang attacks on homes. Well, classic until a giant ceramic penis statue or a rough rendition of "Singing in the Rain" get involved. In a film laced with ultraviolence, Alex and his gang were never more brutal than in their home invasion scenes. (By the way, "Singing in the Rain" was improvised by Malcolm McDowell, and Stanley Kubrick decided to keep it in the final cut of the film.)

Straw Dogs (1971)
As you can see, Straw Dogs was released during the same year as A Clockwork Orange (and actually just 10 days apart as Orange was released on December 19 and Dogs hit on the 29th). This certainly gave our bell-bottom-wearing predecessors plenty to gasp at in theaters during the 1971 holiday season! Dustin Hoffman is fantastic in this film, which was based on the novel The Siege of Trencher's Farm by Gordon M. Williams. And it is indeed that, a true invasion. Much like A Clockwork Orange, the depiction of rape got the film in a lot of hot water. Time, however, has been the true test, and Straw Dogs still holds up more than 40 years after its release and has become known as one of director Sam Peckinpah's greatest works.

Them (Ils) (2006)
The French certainly seem to have a knack for this particular sub-genre of horror, as you'll see as you continue to read down this list. Them proves that it doesn't have to be a hulking beast of a person to successfully pull off a terrifying home invasion; sometimes seemingly innocent neighborhood kids can do a pretty damn fine job of it as well. Beautifully tense and smartly put together, Them will have you locking all the doors and windows at night and checking them at least twice.

In Cold Blood (1967)
Before he was known as kindly ol' Hershel Greene on "The Walking Dead," actor Scott Wilson compiled a very impressive resume, which included the classic film In Cold Blood. And he was a far cry from the caring, bearded patriarch we know him as when he played Dick Hickock. Hickock, with his partner, Perry Smith (played by Robert Blake), decided to descend upon the Clutter Family household in hopes of scoring a large sum of money they believe is inside. Of course things go awry, as they often do when firearms and bad intentions are combined, and the family ends up dead. The film is, of course, based on the book by Truman Capote, which is still considered one of the greatest true crime tomes ever written.

The Strangers (2008)
The Strangers really captured the essence of the home invasion. Sure, maybe some viewers found Liv Tyler to be a bit annoying, but overall the film built some good tension. And there’s something to be said about a guy with a bag on his head creeping around your domicile at four in the morning. Not fun. The true senselessness of the whole crime was escalated even further in the climactic scene when the victim asks the killer why they were doing this and she answers, "Because you were home."

Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes) (2011)
This is a home invasion of a completely different sort. Sleep Tight is not the front-door-smashing kind of home invasion; more like a weird guy using your toothbrush while you’re sleeping kind of horror. Directed by Jaume Balagueró, Sleep Tight is the story of an apartment building concierge who gets a little too obsessed with one of the residents. And since he has a key to access her apartment, and he basically knows when everyone is coming and going, he is free to let his psychotic fantasies run wild. A great film that truly makes the skin crawl.

When a Stranger Calls (1979)
"We've traced the call. It's coming from inside the house." Are you fucking kidding me?! I would have crapped my pants upon hearing this little bit of news. This chilling line from the intro to When a Stranger Calls is as haunting today as it was when the film originally ran in the late 70’s. Carol Kane is fantastic as the helpless babysitter being toyed with by a mysterious caller in a scene that no doubt inspired Wes Craven’s memorable intro to Scream years later. When a Stranger Calls would go on to deal more with Curt Duncan’s (played masterfully by a terminally ill Tony Beckley) psychosis and misadventures after his escape from a mental asylum, but it was indeed Duncan’s original home invasion in the first 20 minutes of the film that made When a Stranger Calls the film we still love today.

I Spit on Your Grave (1977)
One of the most infamous home invasion movies, I Spit on Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman and a handful of other titles) is legendary for being banned from here to Timbuktu. The peaceful writer’s life of Jennifer Hills (played by Camille Keaton) is abruptly shattered when a bunch of hillbillies decide to force their way into her house and attack her in what has to be one of the longest rape scenes ever put on film. The movie does require a bit of intestinal fortitude to get through as the brutality Hills receives is remarkable. But indeed, as home invasions go, this one was extremely debilitating and degrading. A movie that sticks with you long after you see it.

Last House on the Left (1972)
Speaking of debilitating and degrading scenes that stay with you long after you see them, Last House on the Left is absolutely loaded with them. This is the kind of home invasion where the homeowners actually open the door and invite the baddies in. Unfortunately, they had no idea this random quartet of misfits that showed up at their home had already killed their daughter and her friend and were looking to get out of Dodge. What are the chances that they’d end up at Mari’s parents’ home? Small world, ain’t it?

Inside (À l'intérieur) (2007)
Watching the French film Inside is like running a marathon. It’s absolutely exhausting to get through, but when you’re done, you feel like you’ve really accomplished something. Inside is an amazing showcase of blood, gore and F/X. La Femme (Béatrice Dalle) gives a master class in brutality and determination that won’t soon be forgotten. And making the film that much better is Sarah’s (Alysson Paradis) will to survive and protect her baby. From the first moments when La Femme comes to the door and then is photographed looking in the window, you know she’s going to be a handful. And she does not disappoint. This is a home invasion like no other. One deranged woman and some dress shears. Yikes!

Richard Schenkman's Halloween-set home invasion flick Mischief Night will be available on DVD from Image Entertainment on December 17th.

Synopsis:
Horror-thriller Mischief Night stars Noell Coet (Brother’s Keeper, Revelation Road 2: The Sea of Glass and Fire), Daniel Hugh Kelly (TV’s "Hardcastle and McCormick," American Gun), Charlie O’Connell (Unlucky Charms), Erica Leerhsen (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Phobia), Stephanie Erb (The Ring), and Ally Walker (April Rain).

Emily Walton, who has suffered from psychosomatic blindness ever since the car accident that took her mother's life, must summon every instinct at her disposal to protect herself and her loved ones from a mysterious intruder the night before Halloween.

Eric Heisserer Talks Hours - the Final Film of Paul Walker

Eric Heisserer Talks Hours - the Final Film of Paul WalkerWriter/director Eric Heisserer's upcoming film Hours features the final performance of popular actor Paul Walker. Recently Heisserer sat down for a Dread Central midnight interview to discuss the project, working with Walker, and more.

Heisserer began by talking about the story behind the thriller Hours, where the inspirations for the film came from. "It's an intense personal story that is really my version of a love letter to parents," Heisserer said.

"It's about how tough being a parent can be and it's more of an external version of all the fear and doubt and worry that happens when you take home your first little one and you're suddenly realizing you now love something that needs you all the time. And it's about a man coming to grips with the fact that he's a single parent. He's a single father. Kind of like Dorothy in Oz, he's had the power all along to be this person."

In addition to the challenges of parenthood, Heisserer was inspired from other avenues as well. "I drew inspiration from a friend who became a new father right around the time I embarked on the story. And it sort of merged," Heisserer said. "Movies and stories don't really become stories to me by themselves. It's usually a mitosis of several ideas that sort of get together and form a little party in my brain. Otherwise I don't feel that there's enough narrative, enough there. But it was a combination of my friend who was absolutely terrified and worried that he had this life now in his hands, he's completely responsible for it, wanted to make sure nothing terrible happens to it."

"And at the same time I spent over a decade of my life in Houston and had a lot of personal ties to New Orleans and my friends shared a lot of personal stories when some of them became refugees from Hurricane Katrina and had to stay at the Astrodome in Houston and talked about a handful of stories about the tragedy and the aftermath, how the doctors and nurses were manually powering the ICU equipment there, and that stuck in my head. Those two ideas or two stories merged and I realized what I wanted to tell was a story about a father who had to manually power his own daughter's NICU equipment."

Hours was actually born as a short story composed by Heisserer. "I wrote it as a short and published it on a friend's site, PopcornFiction.com," Heisserer said. "That site became the testing ground for a lot of movie ideas that I had. And this was one that I was really scared of as a feature film, which meant I knew that I had to write it as one."

Heisserer has several large credits to his name as a writer, including The Thing and A Nightmare on Elm Street reboots, as well as Final Destination 5, but Hours was his first chance to get one of his own stories told.

"I grew up in a time when writers and directors were really not monogamous to one genre," Heisserer said. "You could write a horror movie or direct a horror movie one year and come out with a sci-fi movie the next. Even Bill Lancaster, who wrote John Carpenter's The Thing in 1982, was the guy who wrote The Bad News Bears. And while I am grateful that I've had a chance to start to pay the rent and actually earn a living through these studio franchise reboots, the first thing I learned is that you are writing for somebody else's property and you are not an architect. You're more contract labor and you show up and they say 'put the sink here' and you do that. Whether or not that makes any sense to you as a storyteller is kind of moot. They're paying the bills and you do that. But you're drawn to this because you have your own story to tell, and I found that I had enough credits to my name I could venture off and do an original piece like this on my own. And when I realized I had that opportunity I guess I doubled down and said, 'Screw it, I'm going to direct it as well.'"

Eric Heisserer Talks Hours - the Final Film of Paul WalkerHours is very much Paul Walker on his own, almost a one-man show. Heisserer talked about his approach to getting a very different performance out of the actor. "A lot of it was him and his commitment to the role," Heisserer said. "For this kind of project to work, both of us had to have a deeper level of trust with each other, and it meant since we didn't know each other privately that we had to form kind of an instant friendship... a few months before I flew down to New Orleans to start prep on it, we would get together two or three times a week and spend several hours together just talking, and I got to hear about his family and his hopes and fears and the things that push his buttons and the things that get him excited and happy and what he thought he'd do. He wanted to be a marine biologist for a very long time and it's always been very important to him that his father be proud of him and he always tried to be the kind of parent that his father was to him. At the same time, I was just as forthcoming with my own backstory, my own history, my hopes and fears. So we were both very confessional on a quid pro quo kind of basis. That level of confession led to a good shorthand with us so that on the set we could say something in very few words to each other and know what we meant by it, and that helped a lot."

Heisserer continued about the connection he built with Walker. "We didn't have to worry too much about rehearsing lines. He's a pro. He already knew all the lines in the script, so there wasn't a lot of rehearsal on that part. And the very specific questions he had, he addressed me with those. He was really about how to emotionally get there. And if I could, on the day, like right before I said 'Action!' I could lean in and say, 'Paul, you've gotta know, this scene right here, right now, in the final movie, is the one your father will say he's very proud of you for.' That was like a trump card, you could play that once, but it was very important for both of us to have that information, and it let him be completely honest in this role. So much of what you see on the screen there is really just a raw Paul Walker experience. It's not like he's a chameleon that sort of jumps into the skin of this fictional character. No. His way into this was to show as much of himself as possible, and I thought that was incredibly risky, so I was trying to be as supportive as possible throughout the entire process."

In addition to Walker, the gorgeous Genesis Rodriguez appears in the film. "I told Genesis, even though she has limited screen time, she has, what I believe, is the most important role in the movie and the most memorable to a lot of people who walk away from it because she gets people to fall in love with her in six minutes of screen time," Heisserer said.

"You have to understand that this relationship is something that Paul's character treasured above everything else in his life and with it gone there was this big hole. The character that Genesis plays is a woman that speaks her mind. She's strong, but she's also very feminine and she has a lot of what I see in my wife… she has a lot of moxie. She has a lot of verve to her. That may not be the ideal stuff for the people out there, but she's the kind of character I react to because she's not just a two-dimensional female supporting character. The great thing about her was Genesis already had that. In my first meeting with her, she could talk about sports cars with Paul and she could talk about the relationship that she had and she talked about the kind of wedding dress she would wear to the wedding in a marriage between her character and the other, and all the while she could wolf down a plate of chili cheese fries. I don't know what her metabolism is, but she's just amazing!"

Finally, Heisserer commented on working with Paul Walker and the effect Walker's passing had on him. "I feel that he was one of the rare, true good guys in this business," Heissserer said. "Normally, to get the kind of performance out of an actor that he displayed in my movie, you have to deal with a lot of bullshit and I had none of that. He showed up on time, he learned the names of everyone on the crew and got close with them. He was the most patient around and he wanted to help. He wanted to help everyone, not just doing his own job, but in making sure the machine of production ran smoothly. And he will be sorely missed because he was one of the rare breeds like that."

Legendary Composer Harry Manfredini to Score Model Hunger; New Stills ReleasedWe could not be more excited about Debbie Rochon's upcoming directorial debut, Model Hunger. Currently in post-production, the project has released some new stills and also just added an incredible talent: composer Harry Manfredini.

That's right, the man behind all those classic Friday the 13th soundtracks will be scoring Model Hunger, which is due out in 2014.

For up-to-the-minute information on the film, visit the official Model Hunger website, "like"Model Hunger on Facebook and follow Model Hunger on Twitter (@ModelHunger).

    From the Press Release
Debbie Rochon and James Morgart are proud to announce that Harry Manfredini (pictured above) will be composing an original score for their film Model Hunger. Manfredini, a prolific composer with over 140 credits to his career, is most well known among horror fans for his compositions for the Friday the 13th franchise. Manfredini is a highly welcomed addition to a production that features a recognizable and talented cast helmed by Debbie Rochon.

Model Hunger marks Rochon’s directorial debut. She is a veteran genre actress with over 200 credits to her resume. The film is written by James Morgart and features a former pin-up model named Ginny (played by Lynn Lowry), who had been cast aside by the heartless and exploitative modeling industry due to a shift in the industry’s ideals of body image. When new neighbors Debbie (played by Tiffany Shepis) and Sal (played by Carmine Capobianco) move in, Debbie begins to notice strange occurrences next door. Sal credits this to Debbie’s psychological instability as he believes she is hallucinating and falling deeper into her psychosis. Obsessed to unveil what is happening next door, Debbie puts a damper on Ginny’s lifestyle of murder and cannibalism. The two immediately find themselves on a collision course with one woman determined to unveil the truth and the other determined to maintain her secrets.

Principal photography wrapped late last summer with cinematographer Wolfgang Meyer behind the camera with special effects by Ingrid Okola and Marissa Masella. The film was shot primarily in the Buffalo area with the guidance of line producer Greg Lamberson and with the help of the Buffalo-Niagara Film Commission. Alongside Lowry, Shepis, and Capobianco, the film features performances by Brian Fortune, Michael Thurber, Aurelio Voltaire, Babette Bombshell, and Suzi Lorraine.

The addition of Harry Manfredini caps off the final leg of post-production of the film, which has been overseen by Zan Rosborough and Darryl LeBlanc of RPM Productions. The film is set to be completed in February of 2014.

A Norwegian Christmas Nightmare Arises with O'Hellige Jul (O Holy Christmas)Everything seems more intense when it's Nordic. Death metal, blondes, the Swedish Chef. The list goes on. Must be a Viking thing. Directors Magne Steinsvoll and Per-Ingvar Tomren hope to add that intensity to Christmas horror with O’Hellige Jul (which translates to something like O Holy Christmas).

According to NordicFantasy.info, a site dedicated to sci-fi, fantasy, horror and exploitation from the Nordic countries, O'Hellige Jul is from a pair of Norwegian directors intent on making a 70's-style low-budget slasher… holiday themed, of course. It promises lots of rape, gore and blood. How's that for Christmas cheer?

The film debuted on December 13 in Molde, Norway, so she's out there if you want to track her down! Eline Aasheim stars with Tormod Lein, Magne Steinsvoll and Per-Ingvar Tomren.

More on when and where you can see this holiday heinousness when we get the info. If you're curious (and can speak Norwegian), follow O'Hellige Jul on Twitter (@OHelligeJul).
