Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller Talks Friday the 13th and Elm Street Future; No Jason in F13?

Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller Talks Friday the 13th and Elm Street Future; No Jason in F13?Brad Fuller, one half of the producing team behind one of Hollywood's key remake machines, Platinum Dunes, recently sat down with Crave Online for an interview and answered some lingering questions about the future of both Freddy and Jason.

He even introduced the possibility of a Jason-less Friday the 13th. I wouldn't get too excited about that though... it has happened in the past with the original Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, but it's kind of unlikely in today's film climate.

When asked if Derek Mears (the best part about the remake) would be returning for the role of Jason, Fuller answered, “Again, I don’t know because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream so we’d be lucky to have him.” An odd answer for sure.

Fuller went on to mention that they’re not yet 100% locked on the script or the found footage direction, “Now it’s a matter of getting a script that we all love, that we feel like we can execute in a great way. That’s always the battle, isn’t it?” On found footage, “It’s something that we’re looking at, yeah. I never know because it depends on the story and what the story is. It’s been reported, that’s something that we’re looking into but I can’t tell you definitively that that’s what the movie is… I’m well acquainted with some very loud members of the audience who hate found footage and I understand that. I think for us it’s more about what the story is and what’s the best way to tell it. Until we figure out exactly what the story is for the next Friday the 13th movie, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be.”

Fuller also mentions that they haven’t heard about a sequel to their Nightmare On Elm Street or a prequel, and that New Line and Warner Brothers haven’t been in touch, “In terms of pure box office, I think that’s our highest grossing film worldwide. I’d love to do another one but I feel that way about all of our films. We don’t jump into these films unless we actually loved the characters or the story. I’d love to make Freddy Krueger movies every couple years. It’d be fantastic.

It'd be fantastic if there was a director behind them who actually grasps the concept of A Nightmare on Elm Street, what makes it scary, and how to breathe life into nightmares beyond having it snow in a classroom. Or something like that.

Stay tuned.

According to Coming Soon, Jacqui Holland (Stretch, My Best Friend's Girl), Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), Joey Oglesby (Fruitvale Station), Sophia Ali (The Longshots), and Tim Ogletree (Supernatural Activity) have joined the cast of the flick, a spoof of AMC's popular series "The Walking Dead."

The project, currently filming in San Antonio, Texas, is based on an original script by Ogletree and directed by Scott Dow. It's described as follows:

Synopsis
A month into the zombie apocalypse, a group of survivors, including four who "for safety reasons" go by the names of their favorite cities--Green Bay, Chicago, Brooklyn, and Harlem; a sheriff fresh off a nice, relaxing six-week coma; his small-business-owner 10-year-old son; and a voiceover-prone zombie who has convinced the group that he's not dead, just a little slow, are forced from the safety of their mall-camp in hopes of finding a rumored safe haven.

Sam Neill Not Revisiting Jurassic WorldDuring a recent interview actor Sam Neill spoke out about whether or not he'd be returning as Dr. Alan Grant for Jurassic World if given the opportunity. Fans hoping for a resounding 'YES' to that question are in for a disappointment.

"Look, you never say no," Neill answered. "I think there’s a whole new cast and a whole new look at things, and I think that’s great. As I said, I’d never say no, but I wish them… well, I’m sure it’s going to be great, but they don’t need me."

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, and Nick Robinson are in various stages of talks to star. Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) penned the script with Derek Connolly and will direct the film. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known that Robinson would play Simpkins’ older brother.

Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Pat Crowley will produce Jurassic World, which is set to begin filming in early 2014. The dinosaurs will hit theaters June 12, 2015.

TCA 2014: Sundance Channel to Air Season 2 of The Returned (Les Revenants) in Late 2014The 2014 TCA (Television Critics Assn.) Winter Tour is in process so expect to see lots of TV news over the coming days until it winds down January 23rd. Today, during the Sundance Channel's presentation, it was revealed that "The Returned" will be... returning!

Per THR, the AMC Networks-owned cabler has acquired U.S. broadcast rights for the eight-episode sophomore season from Zodiak Rights. The currently in the works new season of the critically acclaimed and International Emmy Award-winning "The Returned (Les Revenants)" will air in late 2014.

“Sundance Channel is becoming a go-to network for quality scripted television that's a little bit different to what's airing elsewhere. And 'The Returned' has proven to be an incredible addition to our slate,"said Sarah Barnett, president and GM at Sundance Channel. "We were delighted with the overwhelming critical and fan response to the series, and we expect that Season Two will continue to seduce and chill audiences."

Last September, A&E and "Bates Motel" executive producer Carlton Cuse teamed up to adapt a U.S. version so we'll be keeping our ears open for more about that as well.

Synopsis:
"The Returned" takes place in an idyllic French mountain town, where a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they don’t know yet is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. As they struggle to reintegrate with their families and past lovers, buried secrets emerge and new mysteries develop as they grapple with a miraculous and sinister new reality. But it seems they are not the only ones to have returned from the dead. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past.

Lead Actor and Two Directors Revealed for BBC America's Intruders

Lead Actor and Two Directors Revealed for BBC America's IntrudersBack in October, BBC America greenlit its new original thriller series "Intruders," penned by Glen Morgan, and now some casting news has come along with the announcement of a pair of directors whose works are quite familiar to horror fans.

From the Press Release:
Acclaimed British actor John Simm (pictured) will lead the cast of BBC AMERICA’s new original series "Intruders" produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. The casting marks Simm’s return to BBC AMERICA, where he starred in hit series "Life on Mars,""State of Play," and "Doctor Who."

From writer and executive producer Glen Morgan ("The X-Files") and based on Michael Marshall Smith’s novel The Intruders, the series is a contemporary, chilling paranormal drama set in the moody Pacific Northwest. As strange, apparently unrelated events start happening, multiple storylines – a missing wife, an assassin covering his crimes, a child on the run – begin to intertwine to reveal a conspiracy that will forever change our understanding of human nature.

Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, Exists) and Daniel Stamm (13 Sins, The Last Exorcism) have been tapped to direct the series, which is executive produced by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner for BBC Worldwide Productions and begins production this winter.

Simm stars as Jack Whelan, a Los Angeles cop turned writer who has escaped a dark, violent past for a seemingly quiet life with his wife, Amy. When Amy goes missing, Jack is plunged into an investigation that forces him to confront the sins of his past and reexamine the very foundations he’s built his life upon.

John Simm commented: “After reading Glen Morgan’s brilliant script, I knew I couldn’t pass up the chance to play this complex character. It is also a great opportunity to reunite with Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner and with BBC AMERICA.”

Glen Morgan added: “I am thrilled to be working with John Simm, one of the UK’s most exciting talents, on the realization of Michael Marshall Smith’s novel. The BBC has always broken new ground in this genre, and I look forward to playing a part in that tradition. Together with directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Stamm, we plan to put a whole new spin on 'creepy'.”

Top 6 Things You Should Know about Syfy's Bitten

$

Top 6 Things You Should Know about Syfy's BittenWith its new werewolf series debuting tonight, Syfy recently held a press call with star Laura Vandervoort and Kelley Armstrong, author of the Women of the Otherworld series on which the show is based; and we have the Top 6 Things You Should Know About "Bitten" before watching the premiere.

  • Star Laura Vandervoort really does know martial arts.
  • Vandervoort elaborates: I grew up doing martial arts. So Elena feels like the other part of me. I relate to so much about her. Obviously not the werewolf part, but the fact that she can take care of herself physically... the writers [even] wrote in some extra hand-to-hand combat scenes. And especially in the finale -- we have this epic fight that I just had a great time doing. We had great stunt coordinators that help us incorporate the animalistic side to the fighting. It wasn't a part of the audition, but I think [my background] definitely benefits the character [along with] the fact that most of the actors on the show are physically able to do the fight scene sequences.

  • Author Kelley Armstrong's inspiration for the book series was "The X-Files."
  • Armstrong explains: I was in a writing group. And as part of a writing group, you're expected to actually write new stuff. I was trying to come up with an idea, sat down, and watched "X-Files." It was way back in their first season. Their one and only werewolf episode. It was your typical big guy who changes into some beast-like thing and goes around slaughtering people under the full moon. And I said, "That's not how I would do werewolves." And for a writer, that then sparks, "How would I do them?" And I wrote a short story with this character named Elena, and I loved that world so much that I wrote a book... I wanted to create a character who would be a werewolf and be uncomfortable with that role but ultimately come to embrace it. So often we -- at that time -- saw werewolves [as having] a curse, something that you wanted to end, to get out of. And I wanted a character who -- while she would feel that she should think that way -- really deep down doesn't. And Bitten was about coming to understand that what you think you should be is not always what you're meant to be.

    Bitten

  • These wolves are quite different from what we've seen in recent movies and other shows like Syfy's "Being Human" and MTV's "Teen Wolf" as "Bitten" is geared toward a more mature audience, especially compared to the latter's film version roots.
  • Vandervoort describes them: Our werewolves are actually more down to earth. They’re life-sized to any other wolf. It's not a fantasy show. It's as realistic as we can be with the situation at hand. And the wolves have the actors' eyes and the same coloring -- their fur is the same coloring as the hair. Obviously we are dealing with a mythical idea of werewolves, but we're trying to make it as true to life as we can. And that's making sure the werewolves aren't any different to a typical wolf.

Armstrong adds: This book was written in the 90s... the late 90s when I didn't have to worry about what else was out there. My point of reference was, like, The Wolf Man and American Werewolf in London... I'm saying, "Okay, what's currently out there, and how can I be different?" If anything, the fact that I wrote about werewolves was a huge strike against me because nobody knew how to sell a book where the werewolves weren't monsters. So when I’m comparing it to other things, that's a whole lot tougher for me because... I built mine from folklore. I'm a huge folklore geek, and I went through everything I knew about werewolves and cherry-picked what bits of folklore made the most sense if putting it into a contemporary context where I want people to believe that the werewolves could actually live next door. So there are lots of things in the folklore -- like they can only be killed by a silver bullet -- [that] don't realistically work if you're trying to say they have existed for hundreds of years unknown. The only Teen Wolf I know is that old Michael J. Fox movie. So totally different, different thing.

Vandervoort chimes in: I'm sort of the same world. I love Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf -- and that's about it. I really didn't watch a lot of werewolf movies or TV shows. But I know there are some out there. They are for younger audiences, and I think they're more geared towards the teens... "Bitten" is very much adult in that it's risky and it's raw and it's sexy. And like [Kelley] said, it is to the point where you feel like you could live next to a werewolf and not really know because of the way they’ve lived. They live in this beautiful home. They're cultured. Our pack alpha -- played by Greg Bryk -- is just very intellectual and artistic. They sit down to nice meals, and they only kill what's necessary for food or to protect. They're very educated. And so they're not monsters even though Elena has trouble at the beginning seeing herself as anything but a monster.

  • Yes, the wolves are mostly CGI, but wait till you see their fur!
  • Vandervoort explains: That's been a wonderful part of the show... We don't have to do the furry prosthetics and [sit] in the makeup chair for four or five hours in the morning. We have a wonderful visual effects team; some of them worked on the Life of Pi -- on the tiger's fur. So they're just amazing artists who know exactly how to make the fur move and [look] in certain lights. And we have a German Shepherd that will run throughout the scene, and we'll get the motion of the wolf and then capture that onto camera with our visual effects wolves. So... it's more of the transition from human to wolf that the actors portray -- the bones shifting and snapping and contorting. And then after that it's all visual effects with the actors' eyes.

  • The most complex relationship on the show is between Elena and her pack.
  • Vandervoort describes it: It's complicated. She grew up in a foster care system so never really had much of a family dynamic. So once she's "bitten" into the pack, it's conflicted because... it wasn't by her own will. They bit her. And she had to survive it on her own. But at the same time she finally has a family that she's always wanted and people who will look out for her. So she's torn between what she's always wanted and how she got it -- and then the life that she should be living in Toronto. But eventually within the season you realize that she is very close with the pack and she is their best tracker and she does love them all equally in different ways. And wants to help them and help the family.

Armstrong further explains: What I was doing when I was creating my werewolves is really basing them on -- as much as possible -- a wild wolf pack... it's not as if being bitten brings you in, but what it does is it strengthens that instinct for pack. It strengthens that instinct to need to be with others who are like you and to form tight, tight bonds -- as an actual wolf pack does. So while she's not drawn to these particular people, she is drawn to the idea of needing to be in a close-knit group like that. And, of course, because of her circumstances, it's the American pack.

Vandervoort adds: At the beginning [when Elena abandons the pack], all she's truly thinking is she needs to escape and she needs to get away from the people that have betrayed her -- especially Clay. And just get back to Toronto and live a normal life. But... within the first year of being back in Toronto and staying away from the pack, she does feel this internal pull to be with them. And like Kelley said, I think that that's just maybe a part of the DNA or just a family mentality that she's never had that she finally does. So it is tough for her. I don't think she shows it. But it is tough for her to be away from the pack. And obviously... they need her... she is rare. She is the only female to have ever survived the bite. And she is the best tracker. And they all do have a love for her, but they also respect the distance that she needs to deal with what has happened and how much her life has changed.

  • Armstrong's influence on the TV show was quite minimal, but she's confident fans of her books will still be happy and satisfied.
  • Armstrong says: I really didn't have any influence. And that is what I felt was the correct stance to be taken. I mean, a TV show is an adaptation. It is another version for a different medium. And to take a book and translate it directly to screen would make a very boring book. Because I will warn you, in [the books] I spent way too much time in Elena's head. And to put that on the screen would have been boring. Somebody else has to take it with fresh eyes and reconstruct it for a different medium. And I personally feel that by getting involved -- I'm, of course, so attached to my characters and so attached to my world -- I would be objecting to things that I shouldn't be objecting to. And I was so thrilled with the early scripts I read. I was so thrilled with the writing and how they got the characters. And yes, there are changes, but there should be. And I was quite happy to leave it in everyone's capable hands and just step back... this is my work envisioned by other writers and by actors. And I'm thrilled to have that happen. I'm thrilled to have current readers see it on a screen and new people see it. But it's not supposed to be my books translated to the small screen.

    Laura Vandervoort - Bitten

"Bitten" kicks off on Monday, January 13th, at 10PM following the season premieres of "Lost Girl" (Season 4; 8PM) and "Being Human" (Season 4; 9PM) on Syfy. It's also airing on Space in Canada and HBO Nordic in the Scandinavian countries.

    Synopsis
A new breed of werewolves is coming to Syfy with the acquisition of the first season of the new Canadian scripted series "Bitten" from leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne). Season 1 of "Bitten" consists of 13 one-hour episodes.

Based on the New York Times best-selling Women of the Otherworld novels by Kelley Armstrong, "Bitten" is an emotionally charged supernatural thriller starring Laura Vandervoort ("Smallville," Ted) as Elena Michaels, the lone female werewolf in existence.

Desperate to escape both a world she never wanted to be part of and the man who turned her into a werewolf, Elena (Vandervoort) has abandoned her Pack and taken refuge in a new city. There, she works as a photographer and hides her werewolf existence from her new boyfriend. When bodies start turning up in her Pack’s backyard, Elena finds herself back at Stonehaven, the werewolves’ ancestral domain. Torn between two worlds and two loves, she quickly realizes that – when push comes to shove – she’ll stop at nothing to defend her Pack.

"Bitten" also stars Greg Bryk (A History of Violence, "Rookie Blue") as werewolf Pack “Alpha” Jeremy Danvers, Greyston Holt ("Alcatraz,""Durham County") as Elena’s werewolf ex-boyfriend Clayton Danvers, and Paul Greene ("The Client List,""Wicked Wicked Games") as Elena’s current beau, Philip McAdams.

Pin Remake Finally MovingTalk about a long road to the screen. The last time we heard anything about Sandor Stern's 1988 horror flick Pin was in early 2011. Things happen, ya know, but finally there's a bit of movement to report on.

Macabre Mansion Announces New Audio Drama Poe Poe Pitiful Me Hosted by Dr. ShockerWord of a new project that combines the works of Edgar Allan Poe with the talented team at Macabre Mansion has arrived. Check out the first details on the original all-star audio drama Poe Poe Pitiful Me.

    From the Press Release:
Producers Daniel Roebuck and Kevin Herren are teaming up to produce Poe Poe Pitiful Me. Hosted by Dr. Shocker (Roebuck), our story follows struggling writer Edgar Allan Poe as he pitches three of his original stories to a publisher.

The three Poe stories - THE OBLONG BOX, THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO, and PREMATURE BURIAL - stay true to Poe's original writings with only minor changes in dialogue.

"This audio drama will be a little different than the rest of the 'Macabre Mansion Presents' series," Herren said. "It's going to be a comedic fictional day in the life of Poe with three of Poe's short stories being played out inside the fictional piece. It's three audio dramas within an audio drama."

Roebuck and Herren have a history of working together. "Danny and I have worked together on previous Macabre Mansion projects, including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and A Christmas Carol," he said. "I am especially excited about this [one] because it's the first time we've teamed up as co-producers and collaborators on a project."

Roebuck is also the host of another series that Herren co-produces with Jim O'Rear titled Tales from Beyond.

Giving listeners some visual insight into what goes on behind the scenes, a "making of" documentary DVD will also be produced in conjunction with Poe Poe Pitiful Me. Look for both a CD and the DVD to be released around October 2014.

Offering a wealth of wild and weird titles, home video transformed the viewing habits and tastes of a generation of audiences. The documentary sheds an often unseen and forgotten light on the cult and mainstream causes and effects of the home video revolution.

IDW Announces Two New Horror Anthologies Coming in April 2014 - In the Dark and LibrettoIf you dig comics and anthologies and know the names Steve Niles, Tim Seeley, Brian Keene, Ben Templesmith, Christopher Mitten, and menton3, then read on for the first word on In the Dark and LIBRETTO Volume 1: Vampirism, heading our way in April.

Actually, the authors listed above just barely scratch the surface of all the talent involved in these two diverse publications so be sure to check out the full details, cover art, and pre-order info below.

    In the Dark Description:
The terror tome that has all the horror hounds frothing, In the Dark, is poised to make its debut this April! Featuring top writers and artists from the comic book industry, In the Dark contains over 20 all-new, original horror stories that you’ll want to read with the lights on.

In the Dark launched as a Kickstarter project put together by Anathema scribe Rachel Deering last year and successfully doubled its intended target goal. Assembled and edited by Deering, In the Dark dives into a myriad of sinister horror stories from writers including Justin Jordan, Cullen Bunn, Steve Niles, Duane Swierczynski, Tom Taylor, Tim Seeley, Brian Keene, F. Paul Wilson, Ed Brisson, Marguerite Bennett, Valerie D’Orazio, Paul Tobin, James Tynion IV, and many more.

Nate Powell, Tradd Moore, Damien Worm, Tyler Jenkins, Drew Moss, and Andy Belanger are just a few of distinguished artists that will give each tale a unique and distinct style.

“This book is the 8-year-old Rachel's dream come true. I wanted to make something that, had I found it on the shelves as a kid, would have been my favorite book of all time,” says Rachel Deering, In the Dark editor and project manager. “I wanted to give this generation a chance to feel that macabre magic that held me spellbound when I picked up my first horror anthology comic, and I can only hope it serves the scare the crap outta readers, young and old, for years to come.”

Along with the terrifying original stories, this over 250-page hardcover will feature an introduction by New York Times Bestselling author Scott Snyder and an in-depth look at the history of horror comics by comic book historian Mike Howlett.

“Rachel has assembled an amazing team for In the Dark,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “I know well how difficult it can be to put together an anthology at all, let alone one with solid creative teams from front to back, and that is exactly what Rachel has done here. The book’s successful Kickstarter campaign speaks to people's interest in this project, and I’m excited that IDW can help bring the book to an even wider audience.”

IDW Announces Two New Horror Anthologies Coming in April 2014 - In the Dark and Libretto

    LIBRETTO Description:
IDW's first project with 44FLOOD is LIBRETTO, a 9"x12” anthology presenting emerging and world-class artists as they explore a single theme using diverse mediums such as comics, oil painting, photography, sculpting, and more.

The "libretto" of the title refers to the part of an opera or a musical that is the words or lyrics and is distinct from the music. 44FLOOD’s LIBRETTO will be the “text” to the “music” that is a central theme, starting with LIBRETTO Volume 1: Vampirism coming this April.

LIBRETTO Volume 1 is curated/edited by Kasra Ghanbari and has the theme "Vampirism," being the misuse of power as well as the objectification and exploitation of others. Featured contributors give their unique perspectives on this theme, with many sections including an interview of the contributor conducted by another artist.

“We’re excited to have LIBRETTO launch our partnership with IDW,” said Kasra Ghanbari, CEO of 44FLOOD. “LIBRETTO has both narrative and symbolic works, comic book panels and gallery paintings, alchemical approaches and comedy. It celebrates the ability of art to affect the way we consider and see the world.”

This 200-page softcover will feature contributors that include Ben Templesmith, David Stoupakis, Riley Rossmo, Christopher Mitten, George Pratt, menton3, and many, many more. Several of the artists also give a rare look at the techniques and processes they used to create pieces for the book. This is your rare opportunity to explore the dark world of vampirism as seen in an artist’s mind.

IDW is an award-winning publisher of comic books, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks renowned for its diverse catalog of licensed and independent titles. 44FLOOD is an artist collective and publisher formed by Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith, and menton3. Scott Sigler Kicks Off a Pandemic Social Media Contest; Chat with the Author on January 16thOn January 21 Scott Sigler's acclaimed Infected horror novel trilogy comes to an end with the release of Pandemic, and the author is sending it out in style with a live chat this week and a contest that includes a three-night stay in Vegas!

Sigler provided us with the details of the chat, hosted by Booktalk Nation:

AND THE GRAND PRIZE: Registration and three nights’ hotel stay for SiglerFest 2014 in Las Vegas! Boom!

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO: You need to post pictures and/or videos of you that show/say why you’re excited about PANDEMIC coming out on Jan. 21, 2014, and why you think people should read the INFECTED trilogy.

The first book in Sigler’s series, Infected, shocked readers with a visceral, up-close account of physical metamorphosis and one man’s desperate fight for sanity and survival, as “Scary” Perry Dawsey suffered the impact of an alien pathogen’s early attempts at mass extinction.

In the sequel, Contagious, Sigler pulled back the camera and let the reader experience the frantic national response to this growing cataclysm.

And now, in Pandemic, the entire human race balances on the razor’s edge of annihilation, beset by an enemy that turns our own bodies against us, that changes normal people into psychopaths or transforms them into nightmares.

    Synopsis:
To some, Doctor Margaret Montoya is a hero—a brilliant scientist who saved the human race from an alien intelligence determined to exterminate all of humanity. To others, she’s a monster—a mass murderer single-handedly responsible for the worst atrocity ever to take place on American soil. All Margaret knows is that she’s broken. The blood of a million deaths is on her hands. Guilt and nightmares have turned her into a shut-in, too mired in self-hatred even to salvage her marriage, let alone be the warrior she once was.

But she is about to be called into action again. Because before the murderous intelligence was destroyed, it launched one last payload — a soda can–sized container filled with deadly microorganisms that make humans feed upon their own kind. That harmless-looking container has languished a thousand feet below the surface of Lake Michigan, undisturbed and impotent... until now.

Part Cthulhu epic, part zombie apocalypse, and part blockbuster alien-invasion tale, Pandemic completes the Infected trilogy and sets a new high-water mark in the world of horror fiction.

Sigler is embarking on a signing tour shortly, and you'll find the cities and dates below. For more info visit the official Pandemic website, "like"Scott Sigler on Facebook, and follow Scott Sigler on Twitter.
