Lineup Announced for 2014 Sinister Cinema Film SeriesFor the second year in a row, Cineplex Entertainment and Raven Banner Entertainment are teaming up to bring a series of new horror flicks to our friends up in Canada, and this year's roster includes festival faves like Cheap Thrills and The Battery.

Read on for the full roster of titles and a list of participating theaters!

From the Press Release
Cineplex Entertainment’s Front Row Centre Events and Raven Banner Entertainment are pleased to announce Sinister Cinema’s next round of dark, genre-bending titles.

Sinister Cinema brings a series of independent horror films to Cineplex theatres across Canada. The films include unique content (homegrown short films, special featurettes), and in some cases special appearances, including live question and answer sessions with directors, pre-recorded interviews and more.

This year sees the series expand from 25 theatres to 28, adding three East Coast theatres into the fold:

Cineplex Cinemas Avalon Mall – St. John’s, NL
Cineplex Cinemas Bayers Lake – Halifax, NS
Cineplex Cinemas Saint John – Saint John, NB

The first line-up of films are:

Odd Thomas - Thursday, February 13

Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) adapts Dean Koontz’s best-selling book Odd Thomas concerning a clairvoyant short-order cook (Anton Yelchin) who tries to prevent a supernatural catastrophe that he senses is linked to a mysterious loner. Willem Dafoe, Addison Timlin and Patton Oswalt co-star.

In Fear - Thursday, March 13

Jeremy Lovering’s Sundance horror sensation, In Fear is a tense psychological horror about a young couple’s fight to make it through the night. Home invasion but in a car. In real-time. Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert) are trapped in a maze of country roads with only their vehicle for protection, terrorized by an unseen tormentor hell-bent on exploiting their worst fears. Driving, lost and tormented in the night, primal fears of the dark and the unknown give way to fear that you have let the evil in, or that it is already there.

Starring Iain De Caestecker (ABC’s hit series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) and Allen Leech (Downton Abbey).

Cheap Thrills - Thursday, March 27

E.L. Katz’s black comedy/thriller, which had its world premiere at South By Southwest, tells the story of Craig (Pat Healy), an auto mechanic who loses his job. He is unable to pay his rent and after seeing the eviction sign, goes to a bar where he meets an old high school friend, Vince (Ethan Embry). A rich couple, Colin and Violet (David Koechner and Sara Paxton), give them money for completing certain tasks. The tasks are simple at first, but later become increasingly violent.

The Battery - Thursday, April 17

Jeremy Gardner’s elevated genre hit The Battery tells the story of two former baseball players whose personalities clash as they traverse the rural back roads of a post-plague New England teeming with the undead.

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero - Thursday, May 29

When a cruise ship in the Caribbean collides with an abandoned research vessel, a deadly virus is unleashed. Passengers must find a way to survive before the flesh eating disease consumes them all.

Directed by Kaare Andrews (Altitude and The ABCs of Death) penned by Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher), the film stars Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Currie Graham, Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton and Jillian Murray.

New Trailer Provides Good Long Look at Those Who KillA new trailer has arrived for A&E's "Those Who Kill," premiering March 3rd. It runs close to three minutes and gives us a good idea of the serial killer thriller heading our way.

    "Those Who Kill" Synopsis:
Based on the Danish crime series format inspired by the bestselling work of author Elsebeth Egholm, the ten-episode serialized drama is set in Pittsburgh.

As a freshly minted homicide detective, Catherine Jensen (Sevigny) has garnered a reputation for overstepping her boundaries in her unrelenting pursuit to solve Pittsburgh’s most gruesome murders. Motivated by her past, including the disappearance of her brother and the suspicion that her stepfather is a serial killer, she often finds herself emotionally connected to the victims she’s investigating.

Jensen enlists the help of Thomas Schaeffer (D’Arcy), a forensic psychologist who has a tumultuous relationship with the police department, to provide insight into her cases and her personal investigation into her stepfather. He, too, finds himself deeply connected to each case, but often through the killer, which proves to be a hazardous undertaking.

The pair shares a skewed sense of judgment that often puts them, and sometimes even their families, at risk. As these two captivating yet flawed characters come together, their bond often rescues them from their individual demons but may be the source of more harmful tribulations.

Those Who Kill: Two-Minute Sneak Peek Trailer

“Those Who Kill” is produced by Imagine Television (“24,” “Friday Night Lights”) and Fox 21 (“Homeland,” “Sons of Anarchy”). Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producers for Imagine Television. The L.A. Slasher Wishes Death on Reality TV

The L.A. Slasher Wishes Death on Reality TVReality TV has long been a thorn in our sides. No matter how you slice it, there's no reason for the cast of "Honey BooBoo" or "Duck Dynasty" to be celebrities, and while we are at it... who gives a shit what the real housewives of wherever are fighting about now? It's about time someone took this kind of nonsense to task!

Even cooler? Our own Sean Decker co-produced, and the film features cameos by Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede), Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel), Carlee Baker (Lucky McKee's The Woman), and Allison Kyler (Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2).

    From the Press Release
Post-production on the independent feature film L.A. Slasher, directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger (Girls Against Boys, The Alphabet Killer), has been completed.

It stars Danny Trejo (Machete), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”), Dave Bautista (Riddick), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Drake Bell (“Drake & Josh”), Brooke Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”), Tori Black (Not Another Celebrity Movie), and the voice of Andy Dick (“NewsRadio”).

A biting, social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous, L.A. Slasher explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent - purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior. Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the L.A. Slasher publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars, while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them.

Says producer Wright, “Celebrity seems to have become a race to see who can push the boundaries of degrading themselves the most and spin it into profit. It seems if you achieve infamy online, regardless of the moral and ethical boundaries crossed, you will be rewarded with a reality TV show, endorsements and branding. Actions that were once considered shameful are now celebrated and rewarded. The L.A. Slasher is here to end that.”

Added writer and director Owen, “Hopefully we'll tap into the zeitgeist of tabloid pop culture with L.A. Slasher. It was my intent to do so, in a fun, super-stylized, neon-lit, hyper-kinetic kind of way, with a character I think people will respond to and really, really like. I had a great time making this film, and I think that audiences, particularly those that find America's cultural obsession with faux-celebrity as ridiculous as I do, will have a great time watching it.”

While we await distribution news on the film, we have found an L.A. Slasher social presence on Twitter (@LA_Slasher) and on Facebook, which seemed to be directly interacting a bit malevolently with actual reality TV and tabloid stars for some time. A copy-cat? A fan of the film? A marketing ploy? You decide, but it's pretty intriguing.

    Lionsgate Officially Contracts Cooties

Lionsgate Officially Contracts CootiesOne of the biggest horror properties playing at this year's Sundance Film Festival has been acquired by Lionsgate. The studio just issued the official word that Cooties is all theirs! Read on for details.

    From the Press Release
Lionsgate has acquired North American rights to SpectreVision and Glacier Films’ highly anticipated feature film Cooties at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the Company announced today.

The comedic horror film marks the feature film directorial debut for directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. It is written by Leigh Whannell (co-creator of Saw and Insidious) and Ian Brennan (co-creator of "Glee") and stars Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, Jack McBrayer, Leigh Whannell, Jorge Garcia, and Nasim Pedrad. Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Elijah Wood, Steven Schneider, Georgy Malkov, and Tove Christensen produced the film with Leigh Whannell, Ian Brennan, Hayden Christensen, Seth William Meier, Vladimir Poliakov, Sarik Andreasyan, and Gevond Andreasyan as executive producers.

Jason Constantine, Lionsgate’s President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, said, “We’re thrilled to have another Leigh Whannell project back at Lionsgate to build on our 10-year history together during which we released seven films in the SAW franchise that he co-created. Leigh and Ian, along with all the filmmakers and cast of COOTIES, have created a project that we found ourselves laughing out loud throughout, and we cannot wait to share it with moviegoers!”

“I couldn’t be more excited that COOTIES has found a home with Lionsgate, a decade after they beautifully handled the release of SAW,” said Leigh Whannell. “I’m thrilled to be working with them again and can’t wait to introduce COOTIES to the world with their help.” Ian Brennan added, “Glee and SAW just had a baby! And its name is COOTIES.”

Producer and star Elijah Wood said, “Even before we set forth on the production of COOTIES, we've always seen the ideal home for this film to be at Lionsgate. We could not be more thrilled!”

In COOTIES, a substitute teacher at a new school experiences the worst first day imaginable when he discovers that an outbreak of a mysterious virus is transforming the students into rampaging tykes. The film hilariously illustrates that sometimes kids can literally turn into little monsters. Going into Sundance, COOTIES was already being talked about as one of the most highly anticipated films of the Festival.

COOTIES premiered at midnight this past Saturday, January 18th, at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City. The film’s sold-out premiere screening took place ten years to the day after SAW made its midnight premiere at the same theatre as part of Sundance’s midnight lineup in 2004. Shortly after that screening, Lionsgate announced it acquired SAW and went on to distribute six sequels as part of the most popular long-running horror franchise in history.

Lloyd Kaufman and the Stars of Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 Talk Troma, Ducks and Giant Members

    $
    0
    0

Lloyd Kaufman and the Stars of Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 Talk Troma, Ducks and Giant MembersTroma's Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 is enjoying tremendous success, and the legendary Mr. Troma himself, Lloyd Kaufman, sat down with Dread Central along with stars Asta Paredes, Katie Corcoran and Clay von Carlowitz to discuss the making of the film.

It must be noted that interviewing Mr. Kaufman and the cast members of Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 all together on Skype is almost like participating in a sitcom as you watch it unfold in front of you.

Beginning with a virtual tour of the Troma offices (complete with video proof that Michael Herz does exist, or was that Joe Fleishaker?) that consisted of Kaufman carrying his laptop around and pointing it at whatever he wanted to show, it was clear early on that this was not going to be a typical interview. The group was candid and loved chiming in on each other's answers. We'll try to convey the enthusiastic mood of the interview here as best we can.

Lloyd Kaufman began by speaking about how lucky he felt to have the talented cast he was granted for this film. "We had certain themes we were interested in and lucky for me we had an amazing cast," Kaufman said. "Katie (Catherine Corcoran)and Asta brought the script we were working on for three years from the fifth floor to the 45th floor. They brought it way up there and enhanced everything. If the movie really is our Sistine Chapel, then it's really due to Katie, Asta and Clay."

Return to Nuke Em High: Volume 1

Kaufman discussed how Clay Carlowitz fit into the film. "When we made the first turn on, Vincent D'Onofrio had a very small part, but every time he showed up on the set he was so good we kept expanding his role," Kaufman said. "Clay had a featured role and now it's major and as you'll see in part two, his part grows and grows and grows. But the point is, Clay is a star."

At this point Clay chimed in, "Lloyd encouraged us to flesh our characters out. There was a great collaborative relationship among all of us." To which Kaufman added, "Not since the Nazis and the French got together has there been such a great collaborative effort!"

Kaufman continued, "The smart people can get that this is a love story, a comedy, an anti-bullying tract. A cry for rights for all humanity! It's a very interesting film and it's got all the magic of Troma. And Asta and Katie really made that happen, that the serious themes and the tenderness of the relationship really come to light."

For those who have yet to see Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1, the film is Troma at its best. All the humor and the gore are there and the traditional no-holds barred approach Troma is famous for is absolutely present. In fact, from the moment the film takes off, it's clear that nothing is off limits in this movie. Asta Paredes, who at one point in the film sprouts a monstrously large penis (monstrously large!), talked about preparing for the role and sporting a four-foot wang.

"I think the camera adds a foot, because it was only three feet long," Asta said, delivering the funniest line you'll hear all day. "Lloyd had us read for an audition. He had us read the entire script and just watched our reactions. He prepared us. He made us watch behind the scenes documentaries like Poultry in Motion. I was prepared and I think as long as you bring something genuine to your character, anything is plausible. It's, of course, physically taxing, but luckily we were all living together. We had a sense of camaraderie on set so it was easier to depend on people to help me 'carry the weight,' so to speak. It was a 20-pound member. Overall, I still have literal scars from the set, but now I look back at them as fond memories of how willing I was to go there because people were encouraging me to go further. I was ready, but I think it was way easier than I could have imagined."

Return to Nuke Em High: Volume 1

Katie (billed as Catherine) Corcoran spent a good portion of the film with a duck stuffed in her mouth (this must be seen to be believed). She talked about her feelings leading up to shooting this insane film, and having a duck crammed down her throat. "I think it was more strenuous for him (the duck) then it was for me. He had the difficulty of being forced in there," Katie said. These girls are not only gorgeous, they're funny as hell!

"As you can see (here she holds up the stuffed duck from the film) he's still a little traumatized. I remember when we read the script, we weren't really sure who was who yet, so we were kind of preparing ourselves for both things at first, which was a lot to take in at once. To prepare yourself for a) to have a giant member or b) pregnant on camera and kind of a large object attached to your body in one way or another. What I remember though is Asta and I became friends right away, so we really relied on each other. Both of us were only somewhat familiar with the Troma world, so it was a new territory for both of us. Having that friendship really helped us navigate the waters of what was our first feature film. And a supportive cast, crew, director, as time went on, we learned to shed our inhibitions about the project and just have fun with things. And Lloyd is great because he gives actors the freedom to do that. I had this idea I thought would be really funny and said to him, 'What if my boobs started bazooka-style squirting?' He was like 'Yes, yes! Let's do it!' A couple minutes later we were doing the take."

And not to miss an opportunity, Lloyd chimed in, "And luckily, Katie was lactating at the time. It was very easy." Katie added, "Yes, it was very method. And those are really what my breasts look like. They're that veiny and everything. Dead on."

Asta talked about her creative expression on the film and the freedoms of working on Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1. "Katie and I were cast before everyone else, so we'd been rehearsing the movie for almost three months before we started filming and whatever felt right, whatever served the story, stayed. Everything else we just stripped right away," Asta said. "The essence is there and then some. There are a lot of things that we coined. I don't know where or why it even stayed in the movie, but I came up with this thing in rehearsals where I said 'skinless furbees'. I don't even know what the hell that means, but it someone made the final cut. The script provided a guideline, but the movie magic is that things change on set. Time changes, costume changes, the camera angles change. So many things change that it seems like they change constantly so you just have to hold on to the essence of your character and be ready to roll."

The mention of costumes seemed to trigger a memory for Lloyd. "We did not have a costume department on this movie," Kaufman said. "We hired people, but they just smoked cigarettes and ate pizza the whole time. Katie and Asta created all their costumes, kept the continuity, chose their colors...""You chose our colors," Asta replied. "And you said I should have a crop top and short shorts for the entire movie!" Suggestions like that is why Lloyd Kaufman has been successful in the business for 40 years.

Return to Nuke Em High: Volume 1

Katie also noted how all the film was a complete group effort with everyone pitching in in multiple ways. "The Cretin makeup was done by the actor who played Principal Westley, Babette Bombshell," Katie said. "You talk about multi-faceted artists now, I think this cast and crew was a complete example of that. In addition to working on the film, we all had to be our own stylists, script supervisors, continuity experts and actors and on top of all that. Now we're in post, we're our own marketing team. I've learned so much from this. Working on a Troma film is like the ultimate film school."

Clay addressed the costume issue also, "Lloyd wants you to make strong choices even down to the costumes," he said. "I had a call out for a scene and I was going to wear a t-shirt and he was like 'No. Eugene should wear cutoffs. He should look like that! Isn't that sexy?' It was good because he and I had a lot of talks about my character and what to do with it because he knew what I was trying to do, but wanted to work together to make something that made sense in that world."

Clay is an intense actor and we asked where his energy came from. Before he could respond, Asta replied, "He napped a lot. When the chuckles subsided, Clay said, "I've spent a good deal of my life trying to fit in and learning that sometimes you just try way too hard. I had this urgency to be liked. I still have it. With this character, you have a guy that should be cool. He should be getting all the chicks, but he doesn't have the confidence. It's a miscalculation on his part. But he keeps trying different things to get attention and failing. But he thinks someday, someone will get him."

And in a moment of true sincerity, Kaufman added, "Sort of symbolic of my career, the rejection part. My 40 years of Troma, the word rejection works pretty well."

Return to Nuke Em High: Volume 1

However, the word rejection does not apply to Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1 at all. In fact it's being recognized in huge ways. Like Museum of Modern Art ways. Asta talked about the film being included in The Contenders series. "The Museum of Modern Art has a series of about 20 films that they call The Contenders," she said. "This series shows films that have made waves in the festival community and movies they think deserve a special screening at the Museum of Modern Art. So our film has gotten some legitimate critical reviews and has affected a lot of audiences so we are considered a cult classic in our own time and are put amongst films that have social relevance and should be seen. Others in the series include Blue Jasmine, Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks, Captain Phillips and 12 Years a Slave." And amongst those films sits Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1. Nice.

Katie talked about her excellent experience working with Troma. "The film is really a story about acceptance at its core and that is the message that Troma preaches as a company," Katie said. "They're the place that you can go when you don't feel like you fit in. I know all of the actors and crew in this didn't feel like we were making headway as artists in the film community and Lloyd and Troma gave us this platform. They had confidence to let us experiment and grow as artists. The actress I was coming into this film is completely different than the actress that I am now and that's a complete testament to everything I've learned here with Troma."

Kaufman took this opportunity to address the group of office workers who had gathered around them as the Skype interview rolled on. "I'm here in the Troma bullpen and there's about 15 people watching this interview and I hope they heard that because they have no respect for me whatsoever! They make fun of me and put things up online. When I got beaten up by Morton Downey's friends they put that up on YouTube!" Check that! A Morton Downey, Jr. reference. You don't see that every day.

Return to Nuke Em High: Volume 1

And to wrap the festivities, we asked the girls what viewers could expect from the upcoming Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 2. "There are more monsters. It's more F/X heavy than Vol. 1, if you can imagine that," Katie said. Honestly, we cannot imagine that. "A lot more use of practical F/X. The monsters were actually built for this film and had actors inside them, which is really cool because that doesn't happen that often anymore with the advent of CGI. For F/X fans, for horror fans, it's a must see. And it's a great story."

Asta added, "In Vol. 2, you'll realize this is a sequel and it does play right back up to the very first movie and we tie it up beautifully. Everything comes back and you'll realize that there's a reason we didn't tell you in the first one and the second one will reveal some very major answers from the first movie."

The Carnival of Carnage Contines With a Fresh Batch of Circus of the Dead ImagesA fresh crop of images has come our way for the upcoming indie flick Circus of the Dead, which features the great Bill Oberst, Jr., as a psycho clown along with Parrish Randall and more! Check out the new goodies!

Oberst describes his character, Papa Corn, as "a homicidal serial rapist with a taste for necrophilia whose day job happens to be as a circus clown. He and his highly disturbed fellow clowns use the circus as cover for some of the darkest and most graphic acts of violence I have ever seen in a script or on a set."

"The effects team, led by Marcus Koch and Matthew Ash, has been churning out corpses and body parts non-stop for the entire five-week shoot," says Oberst. "We've sawed off heads, hands, and tongues; stripped the skin off a living man's face; drooled clown slime on multiple females in varying states of undress; and chased a stark naked woman through a parking garage with a real cattle prod. And believe me, that's the mild stuff. This is balls-out horror."

Director Billy Pon is planning a spring 2014 release. The film also stars Parrish Randall, Brad Potts, Chanel Ryan, Ryan Clapp, Rusty Edwards, and Mike Williams. Oberst invites horror fans to support Circus of the Dead by giving it a "like"on IMDb.

    Synopsis
A man becomes entangled in a deadly morality game when the circus comes to town and a sadistic clown forces him to examine the things in life he takes for granted in the most horrific ways.

Jeremy Kasten Needs You To Know About The Dead Ones

Jeremy Kasten Needs You To Know About The Dead OnesHere at Dread Central we recognize that indie filmmakers are the lifeblood of the horror genre, and as a result we try to cover as much of them and their projects as possible. Back in 2009 director Jeremy Kasten came to us to let us know about his latest project, The Dead Ones. Now it's time to spread the word.

Sarah Harper, Brandon Wilson, Katie Foster, Torey Garza, Clare Kramer, and Muse Watson star in the film directed by Kasten from a script by Zach Chassler.

"Filmmaking is tough, dirty, hard, and mean--as well as other words that sound like they were ripped from the covers of 1960s pulp novels," writes Kasten. "It is also, in its purest form, a thrill. Because you risk everything doing something you love. And in entertaining people you hope, in some way, to change the world."

"Although an intensely personal, totally independent film, this is still a tense and terrifying horror movie," Kasten remarks about The Dead Ones. "It is a high school ghost story. It also happens to be about something that I believe is important to discuss--more so now than ever. It is about bullying, school shootings, and repercussions. My crew and I made the movie on a micro-budget. In fact, in order to make the movie we wanted to make, we went over budget and shot a bunch of sequences on green screen. That kind of post production requires money, favors, and time for those favors to come through."

Kasten continues, "When The Dead Ones hits film festivals later this year, we'll need followers. Lots of them. It's really that simple. And so, from one film fanatic to another, I ask: Please be a follower of this movie."

And how do you do that? Simple - just "like"The Dead Ones on Facebook, and follow The Dead Ones on Twitter. That's it! It takes two seconds of your time. What are you waiting for?
