First Details on Stephen King's Revival

0
0

First Details on Stephen King's RevivalStephen King has another new novel heading our way later this year, in addition to the previously announced Mr. Mercedes, so settle in for the first details on Revival, set for release in November by Scribner.

We got the early word on the book from Cemetery Dance, where you can pre-order the Trade Hardcover Edition or a Trade Hardcover with Slipcase via the link at the bottom of the page. Expect to see the official cover art soon.

Synopsis:
From master storyteller Stephen King comes a spectacularly dark and riveting novel about addiction, religion, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town more than half a century ago, a boy is playing with his new toy soldiers in the dirt in front of his house when a shadow falls over him. He looks up to see a striking man, the new minister, Jamie learns later, who with his beautiful wife will transform the church and the town. The men and boys are a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls, with the Reverend Jacobs — including Jamie's sisters and mother. Then tragedy strikes, and this charismatic preacher curses God and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from age 13, he plays in bands across the country, running from his own family tragedies, losing one job after another when his addictions get the better of him. Decades later, sober and living a decent life, he and Reverend Charles Jacobs meet again in a pact beyond even the Devil's devising, and the many terrifying meanings of Revival are revealed.

King imbues this spectacularly rich and dark novel with everything he knows about music, addiction, and religious fanaticism and every nightmare we ever had about death. This is a masterpiece from King in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Fox Thrilled to Go Biblical with The Unseen

Fox Thrilled to Go Biblical With the UnseenReligion-based horror movies have a tendency to become box office cash cows, and even though they struck out with Devil's Due, Fox is looking to stay in the game with a new biblical terror tale entitled The Unseen.

According to THR, Fox has bought the biblical thriller script The Unseen, written by John Travis, with Hutch Parker attached to produce.

The script is based on the short story "Mr. Pettinger’s Daemon," which appeared in John Connolly's collection of short fiction stories Nocturnes. The plot centers on a hospital cleric who is tasked with treating a fellow clergyman in a remote parish who has been displaying severe signs of mental illness. When he arrives, he discovers that the root of his colleague's erratic behavior is a biblical force of evil that is trying to surface from deep below the church.

More as it comes.

Production Nearly Ready to Begin on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? The big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies simply will not stay dead, and given the subject matter, that's pretty fitting! Word out of EFM is suggesting that the cast is falling into place and the flick is just about ready to shoot!

Burr Steers is still set to direct, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones' Lily Collins (pictured) will star. David O. Russell penned the screenplay.

Darko Entertainment, Natalie Portman's Handsomecharlie Films, and producer Allison Shearmur are already on board the project, which was originally set up at Lionsgate.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies centers on Elizabeth Bennet's quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a virus that turns the dead into zombies. The story's set in an alternate version of 19th Century England that features deadly ancestors roaming the countryside.

Exclusive: Zak Bagans Makes a Grave Investment in Latoya Ammons' Haunted Home

0

Exclusive: Zak Bagans Makes a Grave Investment in Latoya Ammons' Haunted HomeOn his show "Ghost Adventures" for Travel Channel, Zak Bagans and his cohorts Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin visit, literally, some of the scariest places on Earth. Now Bagans actually owns one of them. Read on for details.

Before we get into all that, a little back story. Recently Gary, Indiana resident LaToya Ammons reported that both she and her three children had been possessed by demons. Immediately the Department of Child Services stepped in to investigate.

As per Huffington Post:

Over the course of investigations that included police questioning, hospital visits and psychiatric evaluations, several authorities confirmed there was something unusual about the Ammons' case.

"Twenty years, and I've never heard anything like that in my life. I was scared myself when I walked into the room," said Dr. Geoffrey Onyeukwu, the family physician who evaluated Ammons and her three children. He spoke with the Indianapolis Star about his "bizarre" encounters with the Ammons [family]. The family came in complaining of 'demon possession,' which they said involved hearing voices, seeing wet footprints in their house where no one had walked and even levitation at one point. Ammons consulted with local churches and clairvoyants, saying she had poured olive oil on her children's hands and feet at the recommendation of one church.

In most cases, a doctor would likely diagnose this as "hallucinations" and "delusions," and that's exactly what Onyeukwu did... at first. According to a Department of Child Services report, however, medical staff at the physician's office said they witnessed one of the children being lifted and thrown against the wall without anyone touching him. The report also includes many accounts from both mother and children stating they had been attacked by ghosts and visited by spirits in the night. Ammons' two sons exhibited violent behavior as well that involved "growling," choking one another and head-butting their grandmother. The report noted that the boys had acted out violently in public, "but especially with the mother present."

Nonetheless, the case reached its tipping point when, according to hospital personnel that apparently witnessed the act, one of the sons "walked up the wall backwards" and "flipped over and landed on his feet." The children were thereafter removed from their mother's care. The family eventually moved (and the children were returned to their mother), and the owner of the supposedly "possessed" house reported no other tenants had complained. But police captain Charles Austin, who visited the family during investigations, told the Indianapolis Star the experience had converted him into "a believer" in ghosts and demons.

Despite debate over the validity of the claims, Father Mike Maginot — the priest who performed numerous exorcisms on Ammons — stuck by his story in an interview with Bill O’Reilly this week, noting that what he saw was “something unworldly.

Me and my mother and my children, we almost lost our lives,” Ammons told Inside Edition, calling the experience “horrible.

“I know it was infested with demons. I know that for a fact,” she said. “I spoke to a good friend of mine, he was clairvoyant. He’s in New York. He explained to me what was going on in the house. And if I knew what I was up against, I would run and drop everything."

And drop everything she did. She fled the home and hasn't looked back. Check out the videos below from various sites detailing the events including the aforementioned O'Reilly interview.

"Ghost Adventures" star Zak Bagans caught wind of the horrifying tale and made an offer to purchase the home for $35,000... the owner was all too willing to sell. Zak tells TMZ that he's going to live there and document his experience.

"If it's true this home is a portal to hell, then I want to go there and see what happens," said Bagans to the site, who also managed to track down the official Child Protective Services report documenting the Ammons case (read it here).

Zak has been a longtime friend and supporter of Dread Central so we reached out to him to get an exclusive official statement.

"I heard about the case from the media and at first I thought it was just another exorcism in the headline story until I started researching all about all of the different people who witnessed the exorcism," Bagans tell us exclusively. "From there I started researching the files on the case and what all these different people witnessed. All the different testimonies really caught my eye. I'm a full-time paranormal investigator, it's my job to pay attention to this. I dove deeper into the store and have come to the conclusion that whatever happened, it was a powerful moment. From there I got put into communication with Marissa Kwiatkowski of the Indianapolis Star who reported the original story. After speaking with her I was able to speak with Father Mike Maginot who performed the exorcism as well as police captain Charles Austin".

Bagans continues, "From there I got in touch with the landlord and being a die-hard, passionate investigator in this field I had to see If I could get that house. The reason why I wanted the house is because Austin literally referred to it as a portal to hell and he gave me his reasons why he called it that. Frankly, he thought it was all a bunch of bullshit until he experienced what he did with his other officers. I made an offer to buy the house and it was sold to me. It's kind of weird... as if it were meant to happen. I want to go and spend some time there... do research... conduct my own investigations. I want to see for myself whether or not this stuff is valid. I need to look into the history of the home to see if there's any residual activity or residual energy left over there from whatever events transpired on that property."

"Right now this is one of the biggest stories to hit the media regarding the paranormal, demons and exorcisms," Bagans says before hopping off the phone for some new adventure. "I knew that somehow I had to be involved. Now that I own the house I'm gonna go there to document everything. To see if I can find some answers to all the questions that are now lingering. My goal in life is to get answers from the spiritual side of our existence. It's fascinating that sometimes these fights between good and evil happen during exorcisms. Weird things have happened in that home... I want to see if they will replicate themselves once I am there. If crazy shit does start happening to me then so be it... this is what I do."

Below you'll find a police photo of the home. It's kind of hard to ignore what appears to be an apparition in one of the windows. Spooky stuff. Tell us what you think below.

Carole Bouquet and Christina Cole to Help NBC Deliver Rosemary's Baby

Carole Bouquet and Christina Cole to Help NBC Deliver Rosemary's BabyWith NBC's reimagined "Rosemary's Baby" being set in Paris, it only makes sense they'd hire a few French actors, and first to be named is the César-winning former Bond girl Carole Bouquet. UK-born Christina Cole has also signed on to the project.

Per Deadline, Bouquet (pictured right and below left) has been cast as Margaux Castevet, a sophisticated and beautiful Parisian socialite who befriends young Rosemary, and Cole (pictured below right) will play Julie, Rosemary’s spirited girlfriend.

Bouquet, who won a Best Actress César (the French Oscar) for Trop belle pour toi (1989) is probably best known here in the States as Bond girl Melina Havelock in For Your Eyes Only (1981). Coincidentally, Cole appeared in Casino Royale (2006) as well as the upcoming Jupiter Ascending.

The four-hour "Rosemary's Baby" miniseries, an adaptation of the 1967 best-selling suspense novel by Ira Levin, is being directed by Agnieska Holland (In Darkness, "Treme"). It stars Zoe Saldana as Rosemary; Patrick J. Adams as her husband, Guy; and Jason Isaacs as warlock/coven-leader Roman Castevet.

"Rosemary’s Baby," produced by Lionsgate TV, is set in Paris. It was penned by Scott Abbott and James Wong and is exec produced by Joshua Maurer, Alix Witlin, and David Stern with Saldana, Cisely Saldana, and Mariel Saldana producing.

Synopsis:
Rosemary and her husband, Guy, move into a Paris apartment that has a darkly storied past. After finally getting pregnant, she becomes increasingly suspicious that both Guy and their mysterious neighbors have ulterior motives about the future of her child.

Rest in Peace: Oscar Winner and Former Phantom of the Opera Maximilian Schell

Rest in Peace: Oscar Winner and Former Phantom of the Opera Maximilian SchellOne of the greats has left us, and we'd be remiss to not mention the passing of Oscar winner Maximilian Schell this morning (Feb. 1, 2014) at the age of 83 in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria. He didn't dabble in the horror genre often, but when he did, it was memorable.

Per the AP via ABC News, Schell's agent, Patricia Baumbauer, said Saturday he died overnight at a hospital in the Austrian city of Innsbruck following a "sudden illness."

Austrian-born Schell won his Best Actor Oscar in 1962 for Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and also appeared in such genre fare as Deep Impact, The Black Hole, John Carpenter's Vampires, The Vampyre Wars, Darkness, House of the Sleeping Beauties, The Eighteenth Angel, and 1983 TV movie "The Phantom of the Opera," in which he played The Phantom opposite Jane Seymour and Michael York.

Despite being type-cast for numerous Nazi-era films, Schell's acting performances in the mid-1970s won him renewed popular acclaim, earning him a Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Man in the Glass Booth and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance alongside Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jason Robards in Julia. Schell later worked as a producer, starting with an adaptation of Franz Kafka's "The Castle," and as a director. In 1992 he received a Golden Globe for his supporting role as Lenin alongside Robert Duvall in the 1992 HBO miniseries "Stalin."

Schell was also a highly successful concert pianist and conductor, performing with such luminaries as Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein and with orchestras in Berlin and Vienna.

We here at Dread Central would like to take a moment to honor Maximilian Schell and offer our condolences to his many friends, family members, and constituents. Thanks for the memories and auf wiedersehen.

Top 9 Sinister Chefs Serve Up the Scares!

0

Top 9 Sinister Chefs Serve Up Horror!Bon appétit! It is the chef, or the cook if you will, that makes all the magic happen with the food we eat. The right chef can take your ordinary meal and make it extraordinary… or is that Hamburger Helper? Anyway, here are the Top 9 Sinister Chefs in horror.

With the release of Serving Up Richard (review), we decided to dig down deep and remember some of our favorite chefs and cooks throughout the history of horror.

Whether they be chefs of the gourmet variety, or they just threw something (like a boiling bunny) on the stove, the following list of ne'er-do-wells all know their way around a kitchen. And that's one of the reasons why we love them.

As always, we'll give you a few honorable mentions to get things going. Glenn Close's previously referenced character, Alex Forrest, was perhaps not a true chef, but she sure knew how to boil the hell out of a bunny in Fatal Attraction. Crazy gypsy Tadzu Lempke managed to bake a curse right into a pie in Thinner. Not bad, if Nutri-System could somehow get their hands on a pie that makes you thinner, they'd corner the market in the weight loss game! And ragdoll Sally from A Nightmare Before Christmas certainly knew how to cook her way out of captivity. Dr. Finklestein: "Worm's wart, mmm! And…frog's breath?"/Sally: "What's wrong? I-I thought you liked frog's breath."/Dr. F.:"Nothing's more suspicious than frog's breath!" So she may not have been the best cook when it came to hiding the flavors of her secret ingredients, but she always managed to slip that deadly nightshade in one way or another.

Top 9 Sinister Chefs Serve Up The Scares!

Michael and George Tutman- Blood Diner
The old, large box VHS forgotten gem Blood Diner from 1987 featured a pair of brothers, Michael and George Tutman, running (ironically enough) an incredibly popular vegetarian restaurant. While running said restaurant, they are at the same time collecting body parts from 'immoral women' to create a blood buffet which will allow them to resurrect the ancient Lumerian goddess Sheetar and unleash all kinds of bad times. All the while the brothers are being guided by their Uncle Anwar, a disembodied brain and eyeballs who initially started the project of resurrecting Sheeter. Possessing the fantastic tagline "First they greet you... then they eat you", Blood Diner has yet to find DVD release in the US except for appearing in a killer Lionsgate six-pack with films like Fido, Parents and Boy Eats Girl.

Kakihara- Ichi the Killer
Takashi Miike's ultra-violent film Ichi the Killer featured some truly intense moments, however, perhaps none more toe-curling than the infamous tempura scene. The psychotic Kakihara was simply trying to glean some information from his buddy Suzuki in the most gentle way he could conceive. That would be by hanging him, Superman style, with hooks pierced through his back. So how does this make him a chef, you may ask? While Suzuki hung there, the multi-talented Kakihara was cooking up a batch of tempura in oil. Then there's always the problem of what to do with that excess oil. This presented no dilemma at all to Chef Kakihara, as he poured the boiling oil over the pierced back of Suzuki, hoping this little bit of torture would get him the information he needed. This wasn't the case, as after all that, Suzuki turned out to be the wrong guy. Damn shame, but on the bright side, it did look like a particularly tasty batch of tempura.

Mrs. Lovett- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Never performed in a sexier fashion than when Helena Bonham Carter played the role (we've all got a thing for Mrs. Burton, don't we?), Mrs. Lovett is the ultimate opportunist. Both a businesswoman and a cook, Mrs. Lovett found herself on the wrong side of impoverished London owning a meat pie shop. Unfortunately, due to any number of reasons, there just wasn't a lot of meat to be had. That is, unless you got creative. Cats were too quick, and running in short supply themselves anyway, so Mrs. Lovett knew just what to do when a dead body showed up at her disposal… "such a nice plump frame/what's his name has…had…has!" Forming an unlikely and unholy union with the Demon Barber of Fleet Street himself, Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett provided the perfect partner for him. He provided the meat and she made sure all those bodies disappeared while Mr. Todd practiced for his inevitable meeting with dastardly Judge Turpin.

Drayton Sawyer- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Part 2, Texas Chainsaw 3D
Better known as The Cook, Drayton Sawyer was the brains behind the Sawyer clan as they carved a heinous swath into the annals of Texas crime history. One part father figure, one part comedian (and you can probably make that two parts comic to one part dad for TCM Part 2, Drayton is the man who knows how to take all those bodies his boys come home with and turn them into award-winning chili. The secret, of course, is in the meat, and doesn't ol' Drayton know that. He's got plenty of trophies to show for it. Do be careful when eating a bowl of Drayton's chili… you never know when you might stumble upon one of them hard-shell peppercorns. Although, like Lord Voldemort, I feel Texas Chainsaw 3D is something that should not be named, one of the really cool things about that movie… well, the one cool thing about that movie... was Bill Moseley returning to Texas to take over the role of Drayton Sawyer in the absence of the now deceased Jim Sideow, who originally played the role. Fine job, Bill. Too bad you couldn't have played a couple more roles. Maybe wrote the thing too; that might have helped. Anyway, that's cook extraordinaire Drayton Sawyer! Don't skimp on the meat!

Hannibal Lecter- The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Manhunter, Hannibal Rising, "Hannibal"
Drayton Sawyer knows how to make a mean bowl of chili with the right body parts, but Hannibal Lecter can turn those same giblets into succulent gourmet dishes. Just look at how tasty he cooked up that brain in Hannibal. Officer Paul Krendler couldn't get enough of his own grey matter. Now that's good cooking. If you can get someone to eat his own brain, you can sling some hash. And who could forget the legendary liver with the side of fava beans? No, we didn't get to see it, but we can rest assured that Dr. Lecter cooked it perfectly. Dr. Lecter's legend only continues to grow. From his initial beginnings in the pages of Thomas Harris' novels and his introduction in Manhunter (played Brian Cox), Hannibal Lecter has come a long way, and it's all because of his incredible depth of character and the mystery behind him. And much of that is his penchant for liking the finer things in life... and also the fact that he knows how to sauté brains better than Gordon Ramsey.

Farmer Vincent- Motel Hell
Rory Cahoun was an absolute hoot as Farmer Vincent Smith in this hilarious 1980 horror-comedy. Not only does Farmer Vincent make the best smoked meats in the area, he catches the meat himself. It's no problem to blow out a front tire or set some booby traps around the property. Next thing you know... bam! You've got yourself a new load of prime meat to prepare. Unfortunately, as we learn during Farmer Vincent's final moments, he was a bit of a hypocrite as he did indeed use preservatives. For shame. We could forgive the garden full of people buried up to their necks in the back yard, but preservatives, really? Cap the movie off with one of the most memorable fight scenes you'll ever see (it's not every day two brothers go at it in a chainsaw duel with one of them wearing a giant pig head). As far as chefs go, you'll have to look far and wide to best Vincent Smith and his sister Ida at the lovely Motel Hell.

Mei- Dumplings
Bai Ling plays the crafty cook Mei in the 2004 film Dumplings. And what's so special about Mei's dumplings? Well, for starters they can keep you incredibly young and virile. They are truly a fountain of youth and vigor. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a downside to them. They are made from human fetuses. Yeah, that part is a little tough to swallow. Check out the video below for a look at the entire process, from the procurement of the meat to the finished product… and tell me you're not curling your toes when she eats that damn thing at the end of the clip. Yikes!

Colonel Ives- Ravenous
One of the most memorable, and unfortunately underrated, cannibal films out there, Ravenous, features Robert Carlyle as F.W. Colqhoun, who becomes Colonel Ives, and Ives definitely cooks himself a mean bowl of stew. Of course the film is based on cannibalism and the wendigo legend with the men receiving incredible power when consuming the flesh of another… and Ives knows how to cook himself some people. Carlyle is so perfect in this dark, dark, dark comedy film. He goes from a nearly feral man to sophisticated military officer with ease, showing just how great he is. But fyi, he does cry when he cuts onions. We felt the short video posted below that we found illustrates the tone and the… ahem… flavor of the film perfectly.

Freddy Krueger- A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
As if giving us the line "Bon appétit, bitch!" isn't enough, Chef Freddy Krueger delivers one of the most memorable Elm Street kills ever when he appears in A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. Freddy arrives, in one of his frolicy, fun-time moods, dressed as a chef and grabs pretty, young Greta. Instead of just giving her the ol' razor fingers treatment, Freddy decides to force-feed her to death, stuffing her own innards into Greta's face, expanding her cheeks and stomach. She then appears to be choking in her non-dream life. Then somehow she momentarily ends up inside a refrigerator door and then chokes to death in front of her family. Pretty clever, Freddy. Talk about your "Kitchen Nightmares." Sorry, another Gordon Ramsey reference. Had to be done.

Synopsis:
Meet Glory and Everett Hutchins…maybe you’ve already met them. They live in a neighborhood very much like yours, except they have a little secret. Everett (Jude Ciccolella) and Glory (Susan Priver) are active cannibals. Not exactly a Main Street practice today. And their lifestyle presents some practical challenges: like how do you get those necessary provisions?

Meet Richard Reubens…perhaps you’ve met him, too. A mid-level Wall Street investment specialist, Richard (Ross McCall) was transferred to the LA offices under some murky circumstances. In LA everyone needs a car. When Richard answers an ad selling a vintage Mustang, he unwittingly winds up Glory and Everett’s captive in their secret room, in their nice house, in the neighborhood that looks like your neighborhood. And Richard is fated to be the next addition to their unorthodox menu. However...Richard is not a silent lamb about to be led willingly to his own slaughter.

Perceiving Glory as the "weak link," Richard uses all his Wall Street persuasiveness to break her – creating twists and turns that expose surprising personality traits in Glory which constantly thwart his plans and keep us guessing how it all will end.

Rest in Peace: Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Rest in Peace: Phillip Seymour HoffmanSome really sad news is coming out of New York City today as award-winning actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Greenwich Village apartment due to an alleged overdose. He was 46.

Hoffman was found in an apartment in the West Village around 11:30 AM by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach him. Investigators found a syringe in his left forearm, at least two plastic envelopes with what appeared to be heroin nearby, and five empty plastic envelopes in a trash bin, the official said.

Hoffman, though he's given many creepy performances, worked within the genre only a couple of times... once as Freddy Lounds in the 1992 film Red Dragon and most recently in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (which is currently in post-production), and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (which is still filming). It is unclear at this point whether or not Hoffman's part in the second film had completed.

Back in 2012 it was announced that Hoffman was to direct the Depression Era ghost story Ezekiel Moss for Mandalay Pictures. The 2011 Black List script by Keith Bunin followed a young, imaginative boy living in a small town who befriends a mysterious drifter who may have the ability to communicate with the dead. The project never came to fruition.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Hoffman's friends, family, and constituents. May you finally find peace, sir. You will be missed.

Female-Centic Etheria Film Night Expanding to Hollywood; Now Open for Submissions

Viscera Film Festival 2013 Announces Celeb Guests; Show Is this Saturday in HollywoodWith the Viscera Film Festival now defunct, a new event has arrived to fill the void. Some Viscera alums are bringing the Somerville, Mass., Etheria Film Night to Hollywood, and submissions for films helmed by female directors are now open.

Combining horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, and thrillers, Etheria Film Night promises a little something for everyone!

    From the Press Release:
In 2014, emerging women directors of genre films will have a platform to share their new shorts with the world. Heidi Honeycutt, former Director of Programming for the Viscera Film Festival, has teamed up with fellow former Viscera Board Director Stacy Pippi Hammon to revamp the Etheria Film Night, Honeycutt’s science fiction and fantasy festival, originally held in Somerville, MA, in partnership with the former Viscera Organization and movie website/screening series All Things Horror. The content of Honeycutt’s all-female-directed action and thriller festival, Full Throttle, will be combined with the new Etheria Film Night.

With the closure of The Viscera Organization in 2013, which curated and screened new short horror films directed by women, there is a void in the world of independent and genre film. The new Etheria Film Festival will also fill that empty space by including horror when they present a one-night showcase of the best brand new and innovative genre films directed by women at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California, on July 12, 2014.

Co-owner and Director of Programming Heidi Honeycutt says, “It’s time to expand our concept of what it means to be a genre film director. I am going to deliberately seek out films that will make people think, scream, feel, and rethink what it means to be a ‘female director.’ I want to see the number of women making great genre films go up; I want women to feel an unprecedented sense of equality in the film industry, and I think this is one small way we can help make that happen. Things can only go up from here for women directors; I am excited that we can do something to change the perception that women directors are only good at period dramas, documentaries, and romantic comedies. There are some vicious, violent, stunning, surreal, scary, and crazy films being made by women every day; and we’re going to show you just a few of the very best ones to blow your mind.”

Hammon is co-owner and the Film Night Director. From Hammon: “Although I left the Viscera Organization after the 2012 festival, I have remained passionate about providing a venue for women filmmakers to have their hard work celebrated. I had no interest in ever competing against Viscera as a perfect outlet for the filmmakers already existed. Now that this is not available for the filmmakers, I want to ensure that they continue to have a voice supporting their work. In meeting with Heidi and learning her ideas to reorganize her existing ventures into one, consolidated product that keeps the filmmakers and their work front and center, how could I say no?”

American Cinematheque, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting all forms of films through screenings at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, are just as dedicated to providing an outlet for women genre filmmakers. The 2014 Etheria Film Festival will be co-presented by American Cinematheque on July 12, 2014, at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, California.

Though the main event is being moved to Hollywood, Etheria will continue to partner with All Things Horror to include Somerville, MA, as the East Coast premiere location. The tour will include stand-alone events, other festivals, and university presentations around the world and will be under the direction of another Viscera alum, Director of Media and Distribution and co-owner James Morgart. "The lack of women filmmakers in Hollywood is a social problem,” says Morgart. “A festival like Etheria, where we plan to screen films internationally in varied commercial and academic settings assists, is accomplishing three things: raises public awareness of established female talent and of the current social problem, cultivates aspiring talent, and encourages the public to demand more of their art and entertainment.”

Completing the Etheria team is Film Programmer and co-owner Kayley Viteo. “Etheria Film Night is about widening the scope not only for what it means to be a female director in general, but also what it means to be a genre film director in particular,” she says. “I think that making and viewing genre film both have the potential to be powerfully transgressive, and Etheria Film Night recognizes that at its core. Giving female filmmakers a space to showcase their creative ability across any number of genre lines is an important step forward in the movement for equality in the film industry. I'm extremely excited about being a part of that.”

The Etheria Film Night is open for submissions now through March 31st, 2014. Filmmakers can submit online at etheriafilmfestival.com/submissions. The lineup will be curated by an array of film festival programmers from around the world such as Mitch Davis (Fantasia Film Festival), Kier-La Janisse (House of Psychotic Women), and Briony Kidd (Stranger With My Face Film Festival), and many more.

The Etheria Film Night is currently at work on a new website. In the meantime, they will post updates on their Facebook page.
