The Guide Leads Us to BloodshedHere's the thing... when it's snowing out, the entire outside world can go to hell. We're staying warm in our offices listen to metal playlists on Spotify and drinking mass quantities of booze. Still, some do venture out, and they usually end up getting what's coming to 'em!

The Guide makes its DVD debut February 25th from Monarch Home Entertainment. Read on for the details!

Written and directed by John Meyers, The Guide stars Don Scribner (Killing Lincoln, Heaven Burns), Stephanie Leone, Jan-David Soutar (HBO’s “The Wire” and the award-winning film Roulette), Clayton Myers, and Nicholas Russell.

Synopsis
When a distraught woodsman reluctantly agrees to guide two New Yorkers on a deer hunt in the frozen wilderness of December's northwestern Maine, his sanity begins to slip away as the wreckage that his buck hunting set in motion a year before catches up with him.

This hunt would have been like so many others for master buck tracker and guide Joe Dawkins. An inexperienced and unworthy hunter named Greg has traveled hundreds of miles to be led into the wilderness to bag a deer. Except this time, at an abandoned logging camp, the hunter becomes the hunted.

Haunted by guilt over his wife's sudden death a year earlier, Joe is on the brink of madness. On his way to rendezvous with Greg, a New York lawyer whose failures at his firm fuel a selfish obsession for advancement, Joe unexpectedly discovers in a poverty-stricken distant mill town that his only child, Jenna, has fallen into an abyss of meth addiction in a down country mill town under the thumb of a violent dealer. Saving her becomes the only purpose remaining for Joe’s life. Yet, when he gets on the track of the very same buck that eluded him a year before, it leads him to a place where his darkness of mind puts Greg’s inexperience in the wilderness to the ultimate test of survival as Joe’s tortured soul seeks a vicious end -- or redemption.

Desperate for an assignment, John asks his superior, Sebastian, for a new job. The case he receives is that of a troubled girl, Anna (Farmiga), who has begun a hunger strike. While the parameters of the job seem quite simple, Anna proves to be much more challenging than John expected. Because the label has a true eye for talent, and if anyone is gonna be able to pull off a kick-ass ghost story, it's them! Read on for your first word regarding We Are Still Here.

From the Press Release
Filming is officially under way in Western New York on WE ARE STILL HERE, a 70's-set ghost story produced by preeminent independent genre specialists MPI/Dark Sky Films and Snowfort Pictures. The announcement was made today by MPI/Dark Sky's EVP Greg Newman and Snowfort's founder and producer Travis Stevens.

The cast of WE ARE STILL HERE includes genre icon Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You're Next), Andrew Sensenig (The Last Exorcism Part II), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes), and actor-filmmaker Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Stake Land). The film marks the directorial debut of Ted Geoghegan, the screenwriter of Don't Wake the Dead and one of the producers of the anthology film ABCs of Death 2. The director of photography is Karim Hussain (Antiviral, Hobo With a Shotgun). Travis Stevens will produce with Greg Newman serving as Executive Producer.

WE ARE STILL HERE is an atmospheric, classically constructed haunted house story, but with modern, heightened tension and action. After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul (Sensenig) and Anne (Crampton) move to the quiet New England countryside to try to start a new life for themselves. But the grieving couple become the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town they've moved into is hiding a dark, terrifying dark secret. They must overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and the dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls - and the soul of their lost son - into hell with them.

Dark Sky Films' other original productions include the upcoming Late Phases, Frankenstein's Army, Here Comes the Devil, The Innkeepers, Stake Land, and Hatchet II & III. Snowfort Pictures has produced such films as the horror sensation Cheap Thrills, Directors Fortnight documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, the upcoming Starry Eyes, as well as the upcoming desert action picture American Muscle.

MPI's Greg Newman said, "Its compelling screenplay heralds WE ARE STILL HERE as a film that will captivate a wide range of movie fans." Director Ted Geoghegan said, "I am honored that Dark Sky Films, which has been responsible for so many great, entertaining films, will be handling my first movie."

"The haunted house film is one of horror's oldest tropes." adds Stevens, "We're working hard to push the conventions of this subgenre in some exciting new directions. Our goal is to scare the audience in more interesting ways than simply having cupboards slam shut unexpectedly."

Variety reports that Vertical Entertainment has inked a deal for the U.S. rights to the holiday home invasion film, which screens this week at Berlin's Entertainment Film Market.

Directed by Jordan Baker, the flick stars Robin Dunne (“Sanctuary”), Katharine Isabelle (American Mary, Ginger Snaps) and Peter DaCunha (Haunter) as the members of an ill-fated family who fall prey to a cult of sadistic madmen at their isolated country house.

Borga Dorter produces alongside Baker.

Vertical will release Torment in U.S. cinemas early this summer.

Synopsis
Newlyweds Sarah and Cory Morgan have decided to take a relaxing holiday with Cory’s seven-year-old son, Liam, to try to smooth over some of the teething problems Liam is having with his new mom. Despite the idyllic location of Cory’s isolated and luxurious country house, the family members soon realize they have made a mistake by going there. The house brings back too many painful memories of Liam’s deceased mother, and the boy reacts angrily, punishing Sarah for trying to take his mom’s place.

However, the boy’s discomfort is soon put to one side when they realize that someone has been using the house in their absence. After having a police officer inspect the house and reassure them that there’s nothing to worry about, the couple decides that they will stay, at least for one night. Another big mistake.

Their unwanted house guests will soon reveal themselves, and the family will find itself caught up in a fight for their lives. What was planned as a relaxing getaway quickly turns into their worst nightmare as they find themselves on a holiday from hell.

Drafthouse Films Bringing The Visitor and Ms. 45 to Home Video

Drafthouse Films Bringing The Visitor and Ms. 45 to Home VideoThe lovable loonies at Drafthouse Films are doing a great job of bringing some really obscure little titles to a new generation of viewers. Next up for them - the DVD and Blu-ray releases of The Visitor and Ms. 45. Read on for details.

From the Press Release
Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM), will bring two of its recent theatrical success stories to Blu-ray and DVD in restored and remastered editions: the wildly ambitious and neglected sci-fi/horror epic THE VISITOR and MS. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara's gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller. The films will arrive, respectively, on March 4 and on March 25, 2014, with SRPs of $29.95 for Blu-ray and $27.95 for DVD. They come packed with bonus material in both formats.

Incredibly ambitious but derided and largely neglected upon its initial release in 1979, THE VISITOR is an unforgettable assault on reality, a phantasmagoric sci-fi/horror/action hybrid. From writer-producer Ovidio G. Assonitis (Tentacles) and director/actor/body builder Michael J. Paradise (aka Giulio Paradisi - Fellini's 8½), the film artfully fuses elements of some of the biggest blockbusters of the time (The Omen, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Fury, Star Wars, The Birds) and features a fittingly unique cast that includes Shelley Winters (Lolita), Glenn Ford (Superman), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Franco Nero (Django), Mel Ferrer (War and Peace), Sam Peckinpah (director of The Wild Bunch) and, in the leading role, legendary director-actor John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, Chinatown).

Huston plays an intergalactic warrior who joins a cosmic Christ figure in battle against a demonic 8-year-old girl and her pet hawk, while the fate of the universe hangs in the balance. Multidimensional warfare, pre-adolescent profanity and brutal avian attacks combine to transport the viewer to a state unlike anything they've experienced - somewhere between hell, the darkest reaches of outer space and ... Atlanta.

The result is an entertainingly hallucinatory and inscrutable mash-up that repertory cinema programmers around the country have rediscovered for late-night bookings. THE VISITOR now stands as "the Mount Everest of insane '70s Italian movies" (Mondo Digital). In its program notes for the film's recent run, Los Angeles arthouse The Cinefamily said, "Just when you think you've nailed down which direction the film is heading in, it completely shatters your notion of the time-space continuum." The Village Voice's Aaron Hillis called it "ridiculously entertaining ... the schizophrenic mother of all '70s drive-in oddities."

From director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York), MS. 45 was originally released in 1981 and quickly became a notorious cult favorite, an eye-opening study of a seamy, sticky, pre-Disneyfication New York City. But it had remained hard to find in the years since, until Drafthouse remastered the uncut film in HD from the original negative materials and booked it in theaters. The film follows a mute Garment District seamstress - played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund (then known, at age 18, as Zoë Tamerlis) - who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable rapes, unleashes a one-woman homicidal rampage against Gotham's male population.

The fiercely independent auteur feature (originally rated X) was instantly regarded as a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre. In Brad Stevens' biography Abel Ferrara: The Moral Vision, Ferrara recalls of the film, "It shook people up to see an innocent person like themselves suddenly becoming a wanton murderer." Combining the rampaging angst of Death Wish and Roman Polanski's surreal post-traumatic shocker Repulsion, MS. 45 returns from the cult underground over 30 years later to reclaim its title as perhaps the most shocking, complex and empowering vigilante film of the 1980s.

Special Features on THE VISITOR include:

  • Interviews with star Lance Henriksen, screenwriter Lou Comici and cinematographer Ennio Guarnieri
  • Theatrical trailer
  • 16-page booklet
  • Digital download

Special Features on MS. 45 include:

  • Interviews with director Abel Ferrara, composer Joe Delia, creative consultant Jack McIntyre
  • "Zoë XO" and "Zoë Rising," two short films on star Zoë Lund by American Hardcore director Paul Rachman
  • Theatrical trailer
  • 32-page booklet featuring essays by Zoë Lund, Ferrara biographer Brad Stevens and House of Psychotic Women author Kier-la Janisse

The 2014 New Hollywood (NUHO) Online Film Festival is a pioneering digital initiative which will allow worldwide film enthusiasts the ability to view features, docs and shorts in a daring web-based film festival platform.

Celebrated producer, director, writer Spike Lee will inaugurate the first annual NUHO Online Film Festival, which launches on February 7 and runs through February 28, 2014. Along with the founders, the team at NUHO is comprised of an impressive advisory board of Hollywood professionals committed to advancing the scope of the independent film world.

“Like Spike Lee, the horror film community practically carved out the independent film process we’re all familiar with,” explained CEO Mitchell. “We’re picking up the chainsaw and creating a whole new creature that allows leading edge film fans to see new projects before they hit the distribution pipeline.”

Jeremy Gardner directs and co-stars in The Battery (review), a zombie thriller that chronicles the horrific journey two former baseball players face as they attempt to battle the undead in rural New England.

Destination America just announced its most terrifying sweepstakes ever: the chance for one viewer to appear in a spine-tingling role in the upcoming 7th season of its hit series "A HAUNTING." Fans have until February 16th to enter. The episode would tape this spring and air this fall as part of Destination America’s Halloween programming.

Through spellbinding first-person accounts, each episode of "A HAUNTING" profiles the story of one family traumatized by forces unknown. As the mystery and origin of each case is unraveled, audiences are left with a lingering sense that life after death is much more powerful – and sometimes more possessive – than anyone could have possibly imagined.
