    From the Press Release
Writer/director Jose Prendes (THE HAUNTING OF WHALEY HOUSE) and producers Jon and James Kondelik are excited to announce the beginning of principal photography for their fever dream of a film: THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES.

THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES, based loosely on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case, tells the tale of Charles Brubaker (Graham Denman, The Haunting of Whaley House) and his half-brother Thomas Lo Bianco (Jon Kondelik, Airplane Vs. Volcano), who were raised by their arthritis-twisted, alcoholic Mother (Barbara Crampton). The boys concoct a deadly game to test their superior intelligence against the dimwitted masses. This game will eventually lead to murder, and when Genevieve, a beautiful single mother, enters their lives, they finally find the perfect girl for their first kill. Sony Bringing Elisa Lam's Haunting and Frightening Tale to the Big Screen

    $
    0
    0

2013 Was home to one of the most frightening news stories that the world has ever seen. I speak of the truly mysterious case of Elisa Lam. Let me tell you, not much scares me. Her story however? Yeah, her story scares the hell out of me. As does the video of her last living moments.

Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures and Matt Tolmach Productions have acquired The Bringing, a horror spec script written by Brandon and Phillip Murphy and based on an actual place and series of events.

The spec is based on a woman, Elisa Lam, who was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. That’s the place that killers like Richard Ramirez called home at one time or another and where suicides have occurred. Footage of Lam’s bizarre inexplicable behavior in an elevator before her death became a massive internet sensation, and this has been turned into the story of the man investigating her death and the nightmare he stumbles into.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this case...

Lam, who was only 21, was last seen at the Cecil Hotel on January 31st, 2013, according to L.A. police. Her parents had reported her missing, and her body was discovered, nude and floating in the water tower of the hotel (a drinking source for residents), where she apparently was for two weeks. Now, if you can believe it, here’s where the story gets REALLY disturbing.

Lam’s final moments were caught on the elevator security camera of the hotel. The footage you see below was taken moments before her death. In it you’ll see Lam acting very strangely. She appears to be running from or hiding from someone... or something. Most perplexing about the video is that the door stays open the entire time, nearly four minutes. Then Lam contorts into some really frightening way that has to be seen to really be described, and the elevator doors shut. Then open and shut several times before the video ends. Watch the video, and then I’ll tell you about how this story gets even stranger.

A maintenance worker discovered the body while looking into complaints about the water pressure in the building. Guests had been drinking and bathing with water contaminated by a body that had been decomposing for nearly two weeks. So how did she get there? The water tower on top of the building was 15 feet high and locked. To gain access to said tower, Lam would have had to have passed silently through two locked and alarmed doors first. Apparently she did so. All doors were still locked. No alarms were ever tripped. There are 100's of stories about this on the internet reported by every reputable news agency that there is. Some people say she was possessed or attacked by a ghost. If this is the case, then this is the only known footage of such an occurrence.

In the end her death was ruled as “accidental.” Mind you, her clothes were never found. Nothing about this story makes any sense.

Here are more videos on the incident:

  • Editorial: 10 Things I Want From the Next Tomb Raider

    $
    0
    0

Editorial: 10 Things I Want From the Next Tomb RaiderI still remember taking a chance on the original Tomb Raider back in 1996. There was nothing else like it then, and traversing through barren and spooky environments brought as many chills as the game delivered thrills.

The gameplay might have been punishing (I have seen no other video game character die as often and as brutally as Lara Croft), but when you finally figured out how to make that jump—well, no other game was as rewarding then.

Tomb Raider was awesome, and the combination of exploration and infrequent bursts of action hooked me. Even once the original developer, Core, began to buckle beneath the pressure of churning out annual adventures (culminating with 2003’s disastrous Angel of Darkness), I remained loyal. I wasn’t exactly sad to see Core go, however, because 2006’s Tomb Raider: Legend was a near-perfect reinvention. Lara’s new developer, Crystal Dynamics, removed the archaic grid-based control scheme in favor of far more fluid movements. They also brought back the immensely likable heroine who was swallowed whole in Angel of Darkness, rebooting Lara Croft without sacrificing her edge.

But things did not stay as they should. Yes, Crystal Dynamics delivered a wonderful remake of the original game in Tomb Raider: Anniversary, but their next effort, Tomb Raider: Underworld, was a tragic step back for the series. For the first time Lara was being beaten at her own game, having been completely upstaged by Naughty Dog with the brilliant Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Tomb Raider was beginning to feel tired, like one of the long-forgotten relics Lara might hunt.

    Tomb Raider

This realization seemed to hit everyone at once because Crystal Dynamics instantly plunged the franchise into a five-year stasis (not counting the super fun arcade title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light). During that time Lara got a considerable makeover. Stripped of her dual pistols, tan shorts, and weary expertise, 2013 gave us the long-awaited franchise reboot. Taking more than a few cues from cinematic blockbusters like Batman Begins and Casino Royale, Lara Croft got her own origin story, and it was an adventure unlike any other.

Tomb Raider was intense and uncompromising for all the hell it forced its protagonist to wander through. This proverbial trial by fire would’ve broken lesser characters, but every moment seemed to make Lara stronger. When she emerges out the other side, she’s been forged in the fires of a forgotten civilization, wiser and stronger than ever before. Not only did Tomb Raider ascend to the top tier of the franchise, but it did something almost unprecedented with its endlessly popular heroine—it made her completely human.

The depiction of a novice explorer plunged into a nightmarish scenario might seem like a drastic departure from the series’ roots, but that’s not exactly the case. The PC/PS1 games offered their own unsettling atmosphere, and it worked well within the confines of those games. Occasionally, I’d be checking over my shoulder during those late night expeditions because the atmosphere was that pervasive. Seventeen years later, Crystal Dynamics raised the bar that was already set by plunging Lara into a harrowing survival horror experience. In order to stay relevant and competitive with modern gaming, Lara’s latest adventure is rife with more violence and gore, but the game never sacrifices the spirit of adventure and mystery that walks hand-in-hand with the series.

Having just completed my second visit to Yamatai, this time on the Xbox One, I’m again left marveling over one of the most exciting and visceral games I’ve ever played. NextGen Lara is a marvel of gaming animation, and I’m clamoring to see where Crystal Dynamics will take her (and the series) next. Because the sequel is “well into development,” it may be too late for my voice to be heard. But consider this a wish list of sorts for what I’d like to see in the much anticipated Tomb Raider sequel:

Open World: A lot of long-time TR fans have bemoaned the lack of exploration in the recent games. The newest one excelled with satisfying combat, and that shouldn’t change, but there’s definitely room to boost the exploration quotient. Don’t skimp on the action, but give us larger areas to explore. In a recent interview Crystal Dynamics cited Skyrim as an analogy for the sequel’s exploration factor—that’d be a great start.

Vehicles: I loved it when the earliest Tomb Raider games let us traverse landscapes in snow mobiles and jeeps, but driving elements never quite gelled into something completely satisfying. For the sequel I’d love to see Lara have the ability to navigate her surroundings using jet skis, motorcycles, and whatever else is handy. The woman has a lot of resources at her disposal and spares no expense when it comes to her expeditions, so let’s ride!

Swimming: We know Lara can swim, so let’s see her ability to dive in order to locate underground tombs and treasures. It would help create a cohesive and immersive experience right alongside the open world environment. Who can forget the first time you slipped beneath the waves and faced Great Whites in Tomb Raider II? I would love to have that experience once again, only brought to terrifying life via NextGen processing and graphics.

    Tomb Raider

Different environments/landscapes: This might be a bit of a contradiction to my first point, but I love globe-hopping adventures—something to give the story an epic sense of scope. To me, Lara Croft has always been equal to Indiana Jones, and while we largely associate them with harsh jungles and uninhabited tombs, there’s something fun about switching the action to urban locales every now and again. One of the franchise’s best moments was Lara’s high-rise raid in Legend, and there’s plenty of opportunity to go bolder.

Lara’s evolution: It was fun to watch Ms. Croft evolve into a hardened survivor throughout Tomb Raider, and like any great character, that should only be the beginning. Now that we’ve got Lara on the path to becoming the character we all know and love, I want to see how she deals with the fame (and backlash) spurred on by Yamatai. Give us a character that keeps evolving instead of plateauing.

Puzzles: If I had to criticize the new game, it’s only that its puzzles are absurdly easy. I think there’s plenty of room to have a few simple starter puzzles, but the older games used to give me genuine anxiety as I’d sit there trying to figure out how to solve some of the sprawling riddles. Lara unearths places that are thousands of years old, and many of them were never intended to be found. Make her (and us) work for it.

Lara’s classic look: I won’t lie; I missed the ability to see Lara in her trademark outfit. Now that she’s going to be exploring on her terms, let’s at least have the option to slip back into those tan shorts with dual pistols strapped to thighs. You can’t fix what isn’t broken.

    Tomb Raider

Isolation: One thing I truly miss about the oldest TR games is the severe isolation. The idea of Lara interacting with recurring characters is perfectly cool, and as I said, having her occasionally visit a city environment would give the series some diversity. But once she’s out in the middle of nowhere, she needs to be on her own. It’s not that atmospheric or frightening when she can be in constant communication with her support team via transmitters.

Weapon selection: I loved Tomb Raider’s combat. The cover system was perfect, and it was incredibly satisfying to go for headshots. But give us more choices and offer an ability to customize Lara’s loadout. Some of us old school players may prefer to go at it with just dual pistols, while others may prefer to take along a better insurance policy. Whatever the case, variety is the spice of life.

No multiplayer: Not every game needs a multiplayer mode. While there’s nothing wrong with Tomb Raider’s, that it exists at all is sort of intrinsic to the gaming industry’s identity crisis. Many publishers seem to be chasing Call of Duty money, and Tomb Raider was never going to attract that audience. Focus instead on creating a larger single player experience. I would’ve loved Tomb Raider to have lasted another five to ten hours because I can’t get enough of the damn game.

There’s very little I would change about Tomb Raider, but these are elements I hope can be threaded through the sequel. Crystal Dynamics succeeded in a big way by bringing Lara Croft into a new era, and she’s here to stay.

Updates on Blumhouse's Stephen King Adaptation Mercy and Bryan Bertino's Mockingbird

Updates on Blumhouse's Stephen King Adaptation Mercy and Bryan Bertino's MockingbirdThe Hollywood Reporter just issued an odd little article which adds some insight into the films produced by Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions. In it were updates on two projects that are currently sitting on the shelf: Mercy and Mockingbird.

According to THR, the Stephen King adaptation Mercy, directed by Haunting in Connecticut's Peter Cornwell and starring Dylan McDermott, Frances O'Connor, Chandler Riggs, Joel Courtney, Shirley Knight, and Chris Browning, finished shooting a year ago and is among the Blumhouse films sitting on Universal’s shelf.

Studio chairman Donna Langley says the studio still is not counting it out. What does that mean exactly? Probably that they will just dump it on home video and move along.

    Synopsis
Based on a short story by Stephen King, Mercy tells the tale of two young boys ("The Walking Dead’s" Chandler Riggs and Super 8’s Joel Courtney) who move with their mother to take care of their dying grandmother at her decrepit farmhouse. When they suspect that the elderly woman they love has encountered a dark spirit, they fear she might not be the only one who won’t make it through the summer alive.

Once George (Riggs) and Buddy McCoy (Courtney) arrive at their Gramma Mercy’s (Shirley Knight), what they find inside her 150-year-old home is nothing short of terrifying. As the brothers experience deeply disturbing phenomena they believe to be the work of an ancient witch, they must fight for their lives and overcome the evil forces threatening their family.

Also on the shelf is The Strangers director Bryan Bertino’s Mockingbird, starring Todd Stashwick, Audrey Marie Anderson, and Alexa Lydo. That film wrapped in May 2012; Langley confirms there are conversations about doing reshoots. Blum “goes into complete hiatus” on some films, she says, “and he’ll go back into production when he has time and cracked the idea or execution.

    Synopsis
Found footage thriller centering on three cameras that are given to three separate households on the same night with instructions to keep filming if they want to live, but as the night wears on, the characters are pulled into a deadly confrontation with each other at the behest of their unseen tormentor.

Hopefully we'll have more on both of these titles for you soon.

    Synopsis
He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.

And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender “Yuda.” In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco – the son of a prominent gang kingpin – to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) acquired the film for the United States, Spain, Latin America, and South Africa; and Sony Pictures Classics will once again release the film theatrically in the United States.

Rob Zombie and Bret Easton Ellis to Tell the Story of The Manson Murders

Rob Zombie and Bret Easton Ellis to Tell the Story of The Manson MurdersYou want to talk about a perfect match? Then dig on this... Rob Zombie is teaming with American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis to tell the story of one of the most infamous homicides the world has ever known.

According to Variety, Easton Ellis and director Zombie have teamed with Alcon Television to develop a project for Fox that will revisit the people and events connected to the Manson Family murder spree in August 1969.

The project is envisioned as a limited series, but it is in the very early stages of development with Fox. Ellis is set to write the script and some additional materials. Zombie is on board to direct.

Zombie has long had a fascination with the Manson Family slayings, which left seven people dead in the Los Angeles area. Among the victims were actress Sharon Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant at the time with the child of director Roman Polanski, and prominent Hollywood hairstylist Jay Sebring.

The killings were so gruesome, and the stories of Charles Manson’s level of control of his drug-addled young followers so disturbing, that Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy charges even though he was never found to have committed a homicide himself.

Manson’s clutch of cult followers have been suspected of many other murders during that era. But it was the sheer brutality and psychopathic theatricality of the killings (complete with messages written in blood at the crime scenes) unleashed on August 8-9, 1969, that jolted the nation’s psyche.

The Ellis-Zombie collaboration aims to tell converging stories of people and events leading up to and after the murders, from shifting points of view. The project is envisioned as a multi-part series, but it is one of many limited series projects in the works and is far away from receiving a greenlight.

The idea for the project began with Zombie and Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger of Madhouse Entertainment. They developed the concept and brought it to Ellis and Alcon. To date no source material has been optioned for the project, which plans to take an original approach to dramatizing stories drawn from the historical record.

Ellis, Zombie, and the Madhouse principals will exec produce with Alcon’s Sharon Hall, Andrew Kosove, and Broderick Johnson. Ben Roberts and Ryan Cunningham serve as co-producers.

“I have been obsessed with this insane story since I was a kid, so obviously I jumped at the chance to be involved in this incredible project. After speaking with Bret, I immediately realized that we shared the same vision for this epic madness,” Zombie said.

Manson was sentenced to death in 1971, but the sentence changed to life in prison when California abolished the death penalty the following year. He has been denied parole 12 times.
