Casper Van Dien Is on a Higher Mission to Save Us from Russian Rat People - in 3D!

$
0
0

A 3D movie entitled Higher Mission starring Casper Van Dien as a US Senator trying to prevent corrupt Russian politicians from being transformed by God into giant rats, from the producer of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now? What an age we live in.

Oscar-winning producer Gray Frederickson also executive produced UHF so, after reading the rather lengthy synopsis below, you might find yourself surprised that Higher Mission wasn’t one of the parody programs “Weird” Al Yankovic aired on that network.

Synopsis:
From Academy Award-winning producer Gray Frederickson comes a stereoscopic 3D movie that revolves around a highly respected United States senator, John Perryman, who gets a higher calling from superior forces above. Through his dreams he is given an important mission: to expose and to warn the corrupted government officials of Russia to stop taking bribes or else the superior forces will literally turn them into rats.

The Russian politicians laugh at Perryman and suggest psychiatric treatment until the city of Moscow witnesses an unexplained phenomenon. Russian high government officials mutate into giant human-rats in the matter of days. Enraged by fear and chaos, the Russian President’s Cabinet orders Perryman’s capture dead or alive with a $20 million reward.

With the help of his new Russian friends Anna and Polina, Perryman manages to evade capture and stay alive long enough to convert more people. But, just like other saints and messengers of God, Perryman’s fate meets the brutality and cruelty of heartless human nature. Naïve and corrupted Russians hope to destroy Perryman in order to reverse the rat mutation process. Eventually, cornered by angry mobs of human-rats and their relatives, Perryman is killed in front of his new love, Polina, but his death doesn’t provide the cure for the rat disease. The world’s corrupted society now faces the greatest punishment in history... being turned into RATS!

So it’s like the Rapture minus the “P”? You know, the Rature!

In addition to the Starship Troopers hero, Higher Mission also stars Casper Van Dien’s actress wife Catherine Oxenberg, Victoria Summer (Zombie Diaries, Dracula: Reborn), and a whole bunch of Russians.

And the best part? This US-Russian co-production from Russian architect and businessman turned first-time writer/director Vladimir Uglichin was filmed in Oklahoma!

One look at Fantastic Films International’s ridiculous artwork below has me hankering to see a trailer for Higher Mission like a rat lusting for a piece of cheese. Oh, I definitely smell cheese.

Horror History: Happy 100th Birthday to Gertie the Wonderful Trained Dinosaurus

$
0
0

With Godzilla and even Gamera getting all the giant monster love lately, we'd be remiss if we didn't wish a hearty HAPPY BIRTHDAY to one of the big screen's most incredible creatures, Gertie the Wonderful Trained Dinosaurus!

From Wikipedia: Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. It is the earliest animated film to feature a dinosaur.

McCay first used the film before live audiences as an interactive part of his vaudeville act; the frisky, childlike Gertie did tricks at the command of her master. McCay's employer, William Randolph Hearst, later curtailed McCay's vaudeville activities so McCay added a live-action introductory sequence to the film for its theatrical release. McCay abandoned a sequel, Gertie on Tour (c. 1921), after producing about a minute of footage.

Although Gertie is popularly thought to be the earliest animated film, McCay had earlier made Little Nemo (1911) and How a Mosquito Operates (1912). The American J. Stuart Blackton and the French Émile Cohl had experimented with animation even earlier; Gertie being a character with an appealing personality distinguished McCay's film from these earlier "trick films." Gertie was the first film to use animation techniques such as keyframes, registration marks, tracing paper, the Mutoscope action viewer, and animation loops. It influenced the next generation of animators such as the Fleischer brothers, Otto Messmer, Paul Terry, and Walt Disney. John Randolph Bray unsuccessfully tried to patent many of McCay's animation techniques and is said to have been behind a plagiarized version of Gertie that appeared a year or two after the original.

Gertie is the best preserved of McCay's films—some of which have been lost or survive only in fragments—and has been preserved in the US National Film Registry.

Synopsis
When her master McCay calls her, the frisky, childlike Gertie appears from a cave. Her whip-wielding master has her do tricks such as raising her foot or bowing on command. When she feels she has been pushed too far, she nips back at her master. She cries when he scolds her, and he placates her with a pumpkin. Throughout the act, prehistoric denizens such as a flying lizard continually distract Gertie. She tosses a mammoth in the lake; when it teases her by spraying her with water, she hurls a boulder at it as it swims away. After she quenches her thirst by draining the lake, McCay has her carry him offstage while he bows to the audience.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel to The Walking Dead

$

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel to The Walking DeadIf a Tip of the Scalpel to "The Walking Dead" came out a couple months ago, just after the mid-season finale, you guys would have certainly been like, "Atta boy, Gash; you nailed again!" and "Another Scalpel right on the money, Gash."

But right now, maybe you don't necessarily agree so much. Read on, my friends.

Believe me, Dreadies, I was right there with you on Sunday night, watching Season 4, Episode 3 thinking, "What the fuck is going on tonight?!" We have Daryl and Beth lost in the woods, Tyreese with Carol and a gaggle of children blindly following a train track toward a potential sanctuary, Glenn and Maggie blindly searching for each other, and some intriguing new characters just introduced to the television audience a week earlier; and what are we watching? Rick trapped under a bed and Carl and a new smiley Michonne digging what seems to be needlessly deeper into her back story. And here we all sat thinking, "WTF! Please… advance the story!"

And, like you, I went to work the next day and gathered with my "TWD" watching brethren and bitched about the episode. Amongst the comments tossed into the conversation were, "I cannot fucking stand Carl!" and "Where's Daryl?" and "What's up with the guy with the mullet?" I feel your pain, guys, but that's also the reason that the only possible subject of this Doctor Gash Tip of the Scalpel could be "The Walking Dead."

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel

Yes, right now, in this 11th episode of Season 4, things seem to have derailed a bit. But we've been here before. Haven't we all heard, and maybe even said, all these complaints before? Do things like this sound familiar: "They've been at the farmhouse for too long"; "They've been at the prison for too long"; and "Where are all the zombies?" But regardless of the complaints throughout the entire series, "The Walking Dead" is still one of the few shows on television that can absolutely floor you with an episode at any time. It doesn't have to be a finale; "TWD" is so good that it can, and does, consistently, floor viewers with an episode without a hint that a powerfully emotional one is coming.

As the highest drawing show on cable television, "The Walking Dead" was instrumental in helping the zombie to usurp the vampire as the monster du jour. From the moment Rick fired a single shot into the head of actress Addy Miller in the first scene of the first episode, viewers were enamored by "The Walking Dead." And even when we have issues with the show, it's not because we're falling out love with it. It's because we are so much in love with it. "The Walking Dead" has taken us from that walker-infested hospital in Atlanta to a welcoming campground to an initially standoffish farmhouse to a stronghold of a prison to now... To what? The only problem with "The Walking Dead" right now is we don't see the endgame of the season. It looks scattered. It looks disjointed. But fear not, good citizens of Gotham; I've got a damn good feeling that the people that have brought us so many absolutely incredible episodes have everything under control and know exactly what they are doing.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel

Think back. We needed a quality ending between Rick and Shane, and we got it. We needed something intense to happen when a baby was born amongst all this insanity, and we got it. And we needed The Governor to die in just the right way, and we got it... eventually "The Walking Dead" has consistently withstood criticism during the middle of its seasons, almost without fail. And "The Walking Dead" has delivered absolute haymakers, episodes that simply blow viewers out of the water, over and over again. There is a certain pacing to the show that the creators accept that seems to jostle fans a bit, but when each season draws to a close, fans are normally so stoked with the action and the suspense for that which lies ahead that the conversations examining what has happened and what is coming in the future for our weary survivors rage on for long after the seasons' final episodes have aired.

So where are we now? We're in another small lull for "The Walking Dead". The creators are building up to some new crazy, intense action. But first the bills have to be paid. Foundations must be laid, which means we aren't going to get explosiveness every week. We've got to take the action with the foundation. We've got to take the episodes that blow your head off with the episodes that seem to go nowhere. All we can do is trust that the geniuses behind "The Walking Dead" who have given us so much insanely powerful entertainment over these past few years know exactly what they're doing, even as so many of their fans are screeching and turning to social media to voice their displeasure as to where the show is headed. All we have to do is sit back. Sit back and let the season play itself out. There's no reason to jump the gun and say the show is broken. Wait five weeks and see what you think after the Season 4 finale.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel

Let me finish with this. Please feel free to take to the comments section below and tell me I'm wrong. Tell me "The Walking Dead" has jumped the shark or lost direction or just doesn't interest you anymore. I welcome anyone to do that. Is it a soap opera with zombies? Hell yes. Is pro wrestling a soap opera with scantily clad mega-men in short-shorts. Absolutely. Serial television is all soap operas. The viewership just depends on what flavor you like your soap. If you are disenchanted with "The Walking Dead" right now, do yourself a favor; keep tuning in on Sunday nights, and by the time Season 4 is said and done, you'll be happy you did. There are old conflicts to be worked out and new ones to discover. Our weary travelers all seem to perhaps be funneling back toward one another. What could possibly lie ahead?

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel

Please, go out and enjoy all the horror-themed television programming you can find. It's great to see that there is so much out there right now. But please do not forget to be there on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on AMC. An absolutely fantastic television show is there, and you don't want to miss what's coming next.

To stay up-to-the-minute on all things walker related, follow @WalkingDead_AMC on Twitter and visit "The Walking Dead" on Facebook. For more be sure to hit up the official "The Walking Dead" page on AMC.com.

Exclusive Killer Legends Clip Checks the Children

$

On Sunday, March 16th, Chiller TV will debut its newest special, "Killer Legends," hosted and directed by Josh Zeman (Cropsey), which explores true crime stories behind popular urban legends. Right now we have an EXCLUSIVE clip for you to check out!

The hair-raising two-hour event, which begins at 8 PM ET, focuses on four timeless urban legends that haunt the psyche of the American public. This horror documentary follows filmmakers Joshua Zeman and Rachel Mills as they investigate the true crimes that may have spawned these urban legends while exploring how these myths evolved and why we continue to believe.

The documentary probes the following legends:

The Candyman: The film takes viewers to Houston, Texas, to explore the legend of tainted candy that strikes fear in parents every Halloween. Though the legend is prolific, in actuality there is only one documented case of a child dying from tainted candy: 8-year-old Timothy O’Bryan. Timothy was poisoned on Halloween by a real-life miscreant who used the legend to hide his crime, earning him the nickname "The Candyman."

The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs: As the legend goes, a babysitter tormented by a twisted caller learns that the sadistic calls are coming from inside the house. While the babysitter has become the go-to victim in so many of our horror films, does the same hold true in real life? Tragically, the answer is yes…as our filmmakers discover in the unsolved case of Janett Christman, a babysitter who was slain in Columbia, Missouri, in 1950.

The Hookman: The filmmakers investigate the “Moonlight Murders” of Texarkana that some believe sparked “The Hook” urban legend of the 1950’s and 60’s. Based upon the legend of two teens lovers terrorized by a madman with a hook for a hand, we will investigate this real life case of a killer known as "The Phantom," who in 1946 attacked five couples parked on lovers’ lanes. This unsolved crime has created its own unique urban legend in Texarkana, perpetuated by a town that refuses to forget.

The Killer Clown: In Chicago, the filmmakers investigate the “phantom clown” scares that have been spontaneously occurring since the 1980s. In cities across the globe, clowns have been spotted in vans trying to snatch children. Is this just a case of hysteria, manifested by fears of coulrophobia (the fear of clowns), or is there something much more serious at work? As we explore Chicago’s creepy clown past, from John Wayne Gacy to Bozo, we attempt to answer the question of how clowns became so evil and why they continue to haunt our nightmares.

"Killer Legends" is produced by Gulp Pictures and Storyville Entertainment (A&E's "Paranormal State,""Psychic Kids," Animal Planet's "The Haunted") in association with Gigantic Pictures (The Great Invisible, Goodbye Solo).

Check out the goods below after the synopsis.

Synopsis
It’s Saturday night, and two partying teens looking for a little excitement take their dates down to the crypt of a 15th century convent. With video camera in hand, the boys are out to show the girls a good time and create their own YouTube sensation. Things go wrong from the start as the teens find themselves trapped in the catacombs of the convent. The tombs have their own history, and the teens are faced with the demons that rule the underworld.

The next day the teens’ dead bodies are found, and a police investigation begins. Left behind and discovered by church officials is the video recorder, which is the evidence that sets into motion a clandestine effort by the clergy to conceal what actually happened.

Called into service is a special member of the church. Brought in from Rome, his job is to rid the convent of its demons by performing an exorcism. Things get even scarier when the “specialist” himself becomes possessed. The demons now appear unstoppable.

Robert Rodriguez Talks Revisiting Sin City for A Dame to Kill For

Robert Rodriguez Talks Revisiting Sin City for A Dame to Kill ForWe recently took part in a Q&A session for Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn" for the El Rey Network, but that doesn't mean he was able to get away without dishing a bit on the upcoming flick Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

"I always forget that it’s almost 10 years since the last Sin City," says Rodriguez about revisiting that world. "It still feels so fresh in my mind... I guess since we were always kind of working on it, it didn’t feel like that much time had passed."

"I always knew I was going to make another Sin City. So that was a little pressure in my mind as far as how we were going to approach it. I knew we would shoot it in 3D for instance. I knew we were going to adopt certain books and come up with new story lines. It was still a real thrill to go back into that world, to shoot on green screen again and have the actors... the amazing thing was the actors. The actors were really great in the first film, but that was the first green screen movie any of them had done. It was really new back then. Nobody was really shooting green screen movies at all. That was one of the first ones, and they still did a fantastic job. But this time they've come back now knowing what the result was from the first film... knowing what it was all about. Everybody just gave even better, more stellar performances. So it was really cool to see that difference from the first film to the second film."

Following the groundbreaking film that grossed $160 million worldwide, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For reunites Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller for the next chapter in this trailblazing series. Weaving together stunning visuals with an uncompromising, hard-boiled plot, the film promises more lurid tales from the various residents of Basin City.

With a star-studded cast that includes the legendary Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction), Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (Milk), Jessica Alba (Spy Kids 4), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For ensures an experience like no other!

The film will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on August 22nd, 2014.

Synopsis
Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller's visually stunning "Sin City" graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller's classic stories with new tales, the town's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow-up to Rodriguez and Miller's 2005 groundbreaking film FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY.

Best Trailers for Bad MoviesFirst impressions are everything, which is why the art of the movie trailer has become the most vital tool in the film industry. A bad trailer can sour you on the best movie, but most of the time it’s the other way around. If Hollywood does anything right, it’s selling us a slow-cooked turd as delicious chocolate.

So here are Dread Central’s picks for great horror movie trailers that overshadowed their lesser films:

The Hills Have Eyes 2
Exciting trailers for bad movies are a dime a dozen, but what about the ones that are shot just for marketing? You won’t find a better example of an ad eclipsing a film than the brilliant teaser for The Hills Have Eyes 2. Completely wordless with only the sounds of dragging bodies and Devendra Banhart’s “Insect Eyes,” the teaser showed more artistry and directorial flare than anything in the actual movie. To this day, I can’t recall a frame of the end product, but this haunting teaser will always stick with me.

Jaws 3-D
Trailer voice-over king Percy Rodriguez gave the kind of iconic narration that could strike fear into a Disney film. The man’s voice could sell you on a movie without ever showing you a frame – and that’s exactly what he did in this minimalist teaser for Jaws 3-D. These 80 seconds contain more dread than all 100 minutes of the actual film, and you can almost hear the excited hush of the audience when this premiered on screens in 1983.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
I’ll never understand why Platinum Dunes’ clichéd remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has fans, but I’ll be damned if the film’s trailer didn’t get me pumped up to see it back in the day. From the creepy production design to the haunting soundtrack and use of the original’s iconic flashbulb sound effect, it made the hairs stand up on even the most hardened purist. Unfortunately the actual film was devoid of any soul and set the tone for the rest of the company’s hollow music video remakes.

Hellraiser: Bloodline
Dimension Films loves to acquire properties they have no idea what to do with, and the Hellraiser franchise was one of their earliest and greatest casualties. There’s a good movie buried somewhere in the mess of Hellraiser: Bloodline (and it’s certainly better than the godawful Hellraiser III), but the studio’s notorious meddling more than earned this one its Alan Smithee credit. Slap on Clive Barker’s name and throw a bunch of evocative images together to “Mars, Bringer of War” and you have one epic looking theatrical send-off for the cenobites. The trailer also has two of Pinhead’s all-time best lines – neither of which are in the finished film.

Terminator Salvation
It was a shock to no one when a PG-13 Terminator film directed by McG turned out to be a complete waste of time, but the allure of a future-war movie and an incredibly slick marketing campaign momentarily raised expectations out of the gutter. With broody John Connor voice-over set to Nine Inch Nails’ “The Day the Whole World Went Away,” this trailer could almost convince you that Salvation was a pretty good movie you just happened to sleep through. It’s too bad the leaked audio of Christian Bale’s on-set meltdown proved far more entertaining than the end product.

Aliens vs Predator: Requiem
The most common movie complaint - aside from douchebags on their cellphones - is how today’s ads show only the best parts. Exhibit A: This red-band AVP: Requiem trailer composed entirely of money shots. Knowing full well they had another piece of shit on their hands, the Fox marketing department reacted to the fan backlash over Paul Anderson’s neutered first film by cramming every single kill from AVP-R into a fast-paced montage. And it worked. We all thought we were finally getting the balls-to-the-wall showdown the studio had promised for decades. Unfortunately that’s all we were able to see since the finished film looked like it was lit with a fucking Lite Brite.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
It wasn’t the last and it sure as hell wasn’t the best, but Rachel Talalay’s goofball Nightmare had enough wild imagery to form a memorable trailer. The promise of Freddy’s demise with the 3D gimmick made this film the buzz of every schoolyard in the country when it was released. Say what you will about the results, but event movies like this don’t happen too often.

Godzilla (1998)
Riding high off Stargate and Independence Day, the combo of disaster-king Roland Emmerich and Godzilla seemed like the perfect match. The numerous trailers and genius taglines teased a fun monster rampage through New York City’s many skyscrapers - something that feels downright ominous today. But all that hype and excitement turned into widespread booing when a giant iguana showed up onscreen instead of the Big G himself. In retrospect, the smartest move the studio ever made was to never show the imposter (better known as NotZilla) in its campaign. Here’s hoping the new incarnation won’t wind up on an updated version of this list.

The Village
Long before M. Night Shyamalan fancied himself a prophet, the man gave us a trio of solid films that catapulted him into the limelight and gave our genre a much-needed shot of maturity. The Village had all the makings of a new horror classic: a perfect concept, amazing cast and most of all, one damn foreboding trailer. It’s a shame the film squandered the premise and marked the beginning of Shyamalan’s downward spiral into masturbatory nonsense. I still want to see the movie promised in this teaser.

Maximum Overdrive
I just wanted someone to do Stephen King right.

King had to be coked out of his mind when he threw the gauntlet down in his trailer for Maximum Overdrive and inadvertently snubbed previous directors Brian De Palma, George A. Romero, David Cronenberg and Stanley Kubrick (okay, maybe the last one was on purpose). But it’s hard not to get a kick out of the man’s William Castle-esque theatrics, especially when they’re set to the Halloween III score. Of course, you know he’s lying when he says he “kind of enjoyed” making his self-described moron movie, which stands as an entertaining example of 80’s excess but sure as hell didn’t do any favors for King’s directing career.

Alien 3
To be fair, Alien 3 doesn’t deserve to be on any bad movie list. Time and a superior extended version have been pretty kind to David Fincher’s directorial debut, which fails as a sequel but succeeds as a brilliant and nuanced monster picture in its own right. Yet, for those of us who anticipated the film through the 80’s, it’s still hard not to feel jilted by 20th Century Fox’s original promise – which came in the form of this incredible trailer. The series always teased Earth as the big endgame (until the AVP films rendered it mute), and one can’t help but dream of a perfect trilogy ending with Ripley and her comrades battling it out on our planet.

Walt and Sandy Tanner adopted a young boy named Michael at the age of 9 and brought him home to Happy Camp, where the couple were raising their young son, Dean. Jeff Goldblum Looking Toward Independence Day SequelThe Huffington Post caught up with actor Jeff Goldblum to find out if he'd be making a return to Jurassic Park in Jurassic World, but alas, he hasn't spoken with anyone connected to the project. However, about that Independence Day sequel...

"Yeah, they've talked to me about it and I've talked to them about it and they're excited and I'm anxious and eager to see," says Goldblum. "I haven't read anything -- what they cook up. You know, I think they're trying to put it together."

Roland Emmerich is still attached to direct with Dean Devlin set to produce. James Vanderbilt penned the script.

Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster Independence Day hit theaters on July 3, 1996, and went on to gross a still-impressive $817 million worldwide.

Look for the new flick in theatres on July 1, 2016 — or almost exactly 20 years after the original hit the big screen.
