Tribeca 2014: Midnight Section Includes Zombeavers, Extraterrestrial, and More; New Stills! The second half of the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival's features slate is here, and with films like Zombeavers, Extraterrestrial, Preservation, and Indigenous included in the Midnight section, there's a lot for horror fans to love.

In the Spotlight section there are a few thriller/horror-ish sounding films, plus a documentary on Alice Cooper that should be of interest to genre fans, so we're including them here as well.

From the Press Release:
The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by AT&T, today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight, Midnight, and Special Screenings sections as well as the selections for the Storyscapes program.

The Midnight section will open with the feature film Preservation and includes a lineup of genre-bending titles from fresh voices around the world that run the gamut from tongue-in-cheek comedy to chilling horror films. "Whether they made us laugh, squirm, or plain scared the heck out of us, each of the films in this year’s Midnight section never failed to genuinely surprise us with wildly original and unexpected reimaginings of classic genre stories," said Cara Cusumano, Programmer. “From ghost stories to creature features, and even an underdog sports comedy, we’re proud to present an eclectic and adventurous slate of films that we believe represent the year’s most interesting new voices in genre filmmaking.”

The 13th edition of the Festival will take place from April 16th to April 27th in New York City. For more info visit the official Tribeca Film Festival website, "like" the Tribeca Film Festival on Facebook, and follow Tribeca Film Festival (@TribecaFilmFest) on Twitter and join the conversation by using the hashtag #TFF2014.

MIDNIGHT
What do alien invaders and chupacabras have in common with a sword-wielding maniac and the ghost of a turn-of-the-century murderer? They can all be found in Tribeca’s 2014 Midnight program, a collection of this year’s most boundary-pushing genre films from around the globe. Opening Night selection Preservation is a moody, intelligent take on the maniac in the woods genre and an apt foreshadowing of the slew of inhuman baddies that emerge from the darkness to terrify sexed-up teens in Extraterrestrial, Indigenous, and sure-to-be-a-conversation-piece special screening Zombeavers. Meanwhile, a rookie cop takes on his deranged doppelganger in bizarre German horror-cum-arthouse film Der Samurai. Too terrifying, strange, or downright hilarious for daylight hours, these films wear their Midnight Movie moniker with pride.

The Canal, directed and written by Ivan Kavanagh. (Ireland) – World Premiere, Narrative.
Film archivist David and his wife are perfectly happy—or so he believes. When a looming secret shatters their marriage at the same time as a turn-of-the-century film reel he is studying reveals their house to be the site of a 1902 multiple-murder, David begins to unravel, and the house’s eerie history threatens to repeat itself. Dripping with tension and chilling to the core, this visceral Irish ghost story is a visually arresting and genuinely shocking journey into the darkness within.

Super Duper Alice Cooper, directed and written by Reginald Harkema, Scot McFadyen, and Sam Dunn. (Canada) – World Premiere, Documentary.
Emerging from the Detroit music scene of the 1970s in a flurry of long hair and sequins, Alice Cooper restored hard rock with a sense of showmanship, while simultaneously striking fear into the hearts of Middle America with the chicken-slaughtering, dead-baby-eating theatrics that would cement his identity as a glam metal icon. Meticulously crafted from rare archival footage, Super Duper Alice Cooper tells the story of the man behind the makeup, Vincent Furnier, the son of a preacher, who got caught in the grip of his own monster.

Official Word and Look at The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Restored Edition!

Official Word and Look at The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Restored Edition! Two Texas Chain Saw Massacre stories within two hours of one another? That, my friends, is the sign of a really friggin' good day! Read on for the official word and two stills from the film's restored version.

From the Press Release
MPI/Dark Sky Films, one of the leading distributors of independent and genre films, announced today they will be releasing a restored version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic.

The re-release comes in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary with the restoration having its unveiling at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, next week.

In 1973 Tobe Hooper, a cast of unknown actors, and a crew of Austin film students and recent graduates headed to Round Rock, Texas, in the middle of July. For the next 32 days they worked around the clock in 100-degree weather to make The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The movie became a huge hit on the drive-in circuit and eventually grossed $30 million. It was invited to the 1975 Cannes Film Festival Director’s Fortnight and was acquired as part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Since then it has become the eighth highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. In 2012 Sight & Sound magazine named it one of the 250 most important movies ever made.

The new version of the film will be released in theaters this summer with a brand new 4K transfer, roughly four times the resolution of today’s more commonly used 2K for cinema. This is the only transfer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to go back to the original 16mm A/B rolls, the actual film that rolled through the cameras.

Related:Tobe Hooper Talks 40th Anniversary Texas Chain Saw Massacre Re-Release

The restoration of the film, overseen by Todd Wieneke of Dark Sky Films, took place at NOLO Digital Film in Chicago with the use of an ARRISCAN Film Scanner.

Taking 5 months of 40-hour workweeks to complete the color grading and the restoration, NOLO engineer Boris Seagraves stated, “This film probably needed the most restoration of any project we’ve done.”

Having been shot on less expensive 16mm film stock and cheaper, tougher “reversal” stock (which means there is no negative), the restoration started by taking the original 16mm film that rolled through the cameras and transferred all 120,960 frames to a 4K scan.

Scratches, film stains, chemical stains, dirt, torn perforations, rips in the film image, and glue splices had to go through a painstaking correction process frame by frame. “There were hundreds, if not thousands, of instances where you’d find a splice mark cooked into the middle of a frame. Some frames would have close to two hundred dirt events on them. We also spent a lot of time stabilizing the image. When doing a digital scan of a conformed 16mm print with a splice at every cut, it can be tough to achieve the high standards we all aspire to in the era of digital cinema. What might have passed as acceptable in the 70's looks jarring now. So we worked hard to smooth out the tremors that almost inevitably occur when scanning this type of film element. There were tears in the film that we had to digitally rebuild from adjacent frames. There were tens of thousands of things we were dealing with”, said Seagraves.

Estimating that he spent about 50 hours on the color correction alone, NOLO Colorist Michael Matusek used a previous transfer of the film that had been supervised by Tobe Hooper as his guide to a rough color correction. Tobe Hooper then gave notes on this roughly timed version, and the process of adjusting the color began.

Hooper, who helped score the film and did the sound design, was also deeply involved with the audio restoration.

Todd Wieneke stated, “I’ve seen the film literally frame by frame, and I’m still hearing and seeing things I never noticed before... it just adds a whole different level.” Matusek added, “This 4K scan delivers such an intense reality that it feels like you’re really seeing through the film to the actual world behind it.”

Tobe Hooper stated, “I haven't seen The Texas Chain Saw Massacre on the big screen for many, many years. This 40th anniversary restoration is absolutely the best the film has ever looked. The color and clarity is spectacular, displaying visual details in the film that were never before perceptible. The newly remastered 7.1 soundtrack breathes new life and energy into the film. I am very much looking forward to audiences experiencing this film as they never have before.”

Now, 40 years after its initial release and coming back home, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s new transfer can be seen with a fresh pair of eyes at its world premiere at SXSW on Monday, March 10th, at 9:30pm at the Topfer Theatre.

Details regarding the film’s theatrical re-release this summer will be announced in the coming months.

History Channel's Cryptid: The Swamp Beast Brings Legend to Life

History Channel's Cryptid: The Swamp Beast Brings Legend to LifeThe History Channel has a new series called "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" airing on Monday nights, and since it sounds up our alley we thought we'd bring it to your attention with more details and a teaser video.

    Synopsis:
In every region of America there are legends of strange, unidentified creatures that stretch back for centuries.

In the Northwest many credible people swear to have sighted Bigfoot. Near Lake Champlain in the Northeast, locals have sworn up and down to seeing a strange, prehistoric-like creature in the water. And down South in the swamplands, it’s no different: Some of the most deep-rooted and fearsome monster stories have endured. In the new original series "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast," one of America’s oldest mysteries and bone-chilling legends comes to life through dramatizations, eyewitness accounts, real news reports, and expert interviews.

In a remote Southern town the past few years have brought a dramatic uptick in strange occurrences, but now whatever has been lurking in the swamps is intruding into human territory. There have been a rash of cattle mutilations and pets being snatched away from backyards. With the attacks not matching up forensically with any known predators, suspicions have spread. Terrified residents claim to have seen signs of voodoo and are conjuring up old Cajun legends like the “Rougarou,” a mythical shape-shifter, as a possible culprit. Others swear they’ve seen a huge, bipedal creature locally known as a “skunk ape” lurking about at night.

The series follows a small animal-control business that responds to various calls and sightings and a deputy sheriff who believes the real culprit is some twisted individual deep in the swamp. As the weeks pass, the sightings intensify, and even the most skeptical people in town begin to wonder if its darkest legends, and their worst fears, have in fact come to life.

"Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" mixes legends with eyewitness accounts and crafts them into an entertaining and scary fictional story that speaks to America’s macabre history of folklore. It features startling real interviews with those who believe the legends and have seen strange things with their own eyes. Folklore experts, biologists, and original news clips play throughout each episode as well to add further real-world context.

New episodes air on Mondays at 10/9c. For more info visit "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" on History.com.

SXSW 2014: Robert Rodriguez's Museum Featuring Original Frank Frazetta Masterpieces Launches on Location! There's so much cool stuff happening at SXSW 2014, it's hard to know where to begin. That being said, if you're one of the lucky ones who are attending the event, here's something you DON'T want to miss!

    From the Press Release
For a limited time only during SXSW 2014, Robert Rodriguez is proud to launch a museum featuring his own specially curated collection of art which includes the work of celebrated American artist Frank Frazetta.

Considered to be the most influential fantasy artist in history, Frazetta contributed iconic artwork to classic works of fiction for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, and John Carter of Mars among others. The gallery will be open to the public daily from Saturday, March 8th, to Sunday, March 16th, from 12 Noon-8 PM. The museum is located at 920 Congress Ave. in Austin, TX. The gallery will have a $20 entrance fee benefiting the Frazetta Estate's preservation of the art for a new Frank Frazetta museum.

The gallery will also feature an original SIN CITY masterpiece by FRANK MILLER, original art by DREW STRUZAN including his rendering of Sylvester Stallone for the movie poster FIRST BLOOD, and original poster art for THE THING. Original paintings by New Pop Art master SEBASTIAN KRÜGER including hyper real paintings of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Danny Trejo. Bronzed art sculptures from CLETE SHIELDS. Shields' work has been commissioned by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In addition, the gallery will feature SIN CITY character self-portrait paintings from cast members including Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga, Rosario Dawson, and Josh Brolin painted with Robert and his mentor, artist George Yepes, during the making of SIN CITY 2. There will also be a selection of hand-numbered giclée prints of Frazetta pieces photographed and printed by Robert Rodriguez available for purchase. Proceeds from the prints will benefit the Frazetta Estate to preserve the art for a new Frank Frazetta Museum.

The idea for the museum has been long in the making. Robert Rodriguez has been touring Frank Frazetta original art at Comic-Con and Wizard Con to continue the wish of Frank Frazetta, a friend and collaborator of Robert's who always wanted audiences to see his paintings in person. The original Frazetta museum in upstate New York closed after the passing of Frank Frazetta in 2010. The new Rodriguez museum features other world-class artists Robert has also worked with and studied under over the years with art that he's collected himself and others that are on exclusive loan for this event. The FRANK FRAZETTA COLLECTION has an unprecedented amount of original masterpieces including Death Dealer, Egyptian Queen, At the Earth's Core, Conan, and Dark Kingdom as well a rare painting Frazetta did for the movie FROM DUSK TILL DAWN among others. There are 12 masterpieces total.

"This has to be the most kick-ass museum in the world," said filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. "For one, it's the only place you can see original Frank Frazetta art, 12 masterpiece paintings total, alongside original art by Frank Miller, Drew Struzan, Sebastian Kruger, and Clete Shields. Throw in character paintings by the cast of Sin City 2 and 'From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,' and you will never see anything like this event anywhere, in any museum. I'm very excited to be showcasing this mind-blowing art by my favorite artists and collaborators in Austin."

Something Scary Happens In This Exclusive Killer Legends Clip

Chiller TV will debut its newest special, "Killer Legends," on Sunday, March 16th. It is hosted and directed by Josh Zeman (Cropsey) and explores true crime stories behind popular urban legends. Right now we have another EXCLUSIVE clip from the show for you to check out!

The hair-raising two-hour event, which begins at 8 PM ET, focuses on four timeless urban legends that haunt the psyche of the American public. This horror documentary follows filmmakers Joshua Zeman and Rachel Mills as they investigate the true crimes that may have spawned these urban legends while exploring how these myths evolved and why we continue to believe.

The documentary probes the following legends:

The Candyman: The film takes viewers to Houston, Texas, to explore the legend of tainted candy that strikes fear in parents every Halloween. Though the legend is prolific, in actuality there is only one documented case of a child dying from tainted candy: 8-year-old Timothy O’Bryan. Timothy was poisoned on Halloween by a real-life miscreant who used the legend to hide his crime, earning him the nickname "The Candyman."

The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs: As the legend goes, a babysitter tormented by a twisted caller learns that the sadistic calls are coming from inside the house. While the babysitter has become the go-to victim in so many of our horror films, does the same hold true in real life? Tragically, the answer is yes…as our filmmakers discover in the unsolved case of Janett Christman, a babysitter who was slain in Columbia, Missouri, in 1950.

The Hookman: The filmmakers investigate the “Moonlight Murders” of Texarkana that some believe sparked “The Hook” urban legend of the 1950’s and 60’s. Based upon the legend of two teens lovers terrorized by a madman with a hook for a hand, we will investigate this real life case of a killer known as "The Phantom," who in 1946 attacked five couples parked on lovers’ lanes. This unsolved crime has created its own unique urban legend in Texarkana, perpetuated by a town that refuses to forget.

The Killer Clown: In Chicago, the filmmakers investigate the “phantom clown” scares that have been spontaneously occurring since the 1980s. In cities across the globe, clowns have been spotted in vans trying to snatch children. Is this just a case of hysteria, manifested by fears of coulrophobia (the fear of clowns), or is there something much more serious at work? As we explore Chicago’s creepy clown past, from John Wayne Gacy to Bozo, we attempt to answer the question of how clowns became so evil and why they continue to haunt our nightmares.

"Killer Legends" is produced by Gulp Pictures and Storyville Entertainment (A&E's "Paranormal State,""Psychic Kids," Animal Planet's "The Haunted") in association with Gigantic Pictures (The Great Invisible, Goodbye Solo).
