Founders Day Gets Scary; First Trailer, Artwork, and More!In the tradition of occasion-based horror movies such as Graduation Day, April Fool's Day, Final Exam, Black Christmas, Halloween, New Year's Evil, and more comes a new slasher ready to take his aggression out on nubile young victims! Get set for Founders Day!

From the Press Release
MainFrame Pictures is proud to announce the release of the official concept trailer for their forthcoming feature film Founders Day.

Principal photography on the trailer took place entirely in the state of Connecticut from August 14-18, 2013. The production included 18 actors, 20 crew members, and dozens of extras from across the Northeast.

In Founders Day the quaint suburban town of Fairfield is shaken by the shocking murder of high school student Melissa Thompson. The prime suspect is jailed, and the residents look to the town's bicentennial celebration to provide a sense of strength and normalcy. When more bodies turn up, however, the citizens of Fairfield grow increasingly suspicious of one another. With no clear motive, everyone is a suspect.

Founders Day is written, directed, and produced by Erik C. Bloomquist, a Connecticut-based actor and filmmaker. His prior film, Midnight Brew, starring Kyle Edward Cranston and Greta Quezada, recently played the Trinity Film Festival and took home the Screener’s Choice Award. Another project, "Laundry Night," will soon enter its third year on international television on ShortsHD TV.

Bloomquist and his team expect to shoot Founders Day in Connecticut in autumn 2014 and release the film in autumn 2015.

A&E Takes Those Who Kill Off the Schedule; Moves Bates Motel to 10PMAfter airing just two episodes, A&E has pulled its new series "Those Who Kill" off the air and will move "Bates Motel" to its 10PM time slot on Monday nights, beginning immediately.

Per THR, a new time slot for "Those Who Kill" will be determined later this week as the network likes it and believes it can find an audience. For now, a "Bates Motel" repeat will air at 9PM with new episodes following.

"Those Who Kill" premiered March 4th to just 1.4 million viewers, almost half of the 3.07 million who tuned in for the debut of "Bates Motel's" second season an hour prior. As for that precious adults 18-49 demographic, "Those Who Kill" logged 0.5, nearly a third of the 1.6 million who tuned in for "Bates." It then lost almost half its premiere viewers this week in its second airing, drawing only 830,000 total viewers and a 0.3 in the demo.

We should have word soon on what the network's plans are. In the meantime, it's not too late to give it a shot and catch up on Episodes 1 and 2 online, On Demand, and on the A&E app.

Unmask the Official Teaser and New Images from The Laughing MaskIt was November of 2012 when we first heard about Michael Aguiar's The Laughing Mask, and an update has finally come along with the film's official teaser trailer and some new images. Check 'em out and enjoy a good chuckle!

From the Press Release:
The Laughing Mask is an indie horror co-production from America and Brazil from writer/director Michael Aguiar and production house Bravestarr Pictures. The Laughing Mask was shot and completed in Florida over a rigorous 28-day shooting schedule.

The Director of Photography, William Schweikert, used a Red Epic camera to capture all of the horrifying imagery, while Daniel Mazikowski (The Sadist) handled all the special effects. The cast is compromised of several rising stars including Fran Rafferty, Inge Uys, Gabriel Lee, Sheyenne Rivers, Matt Ganey, and Thomas Noel Smith.

The film’s story involves the loss of family. Jake has lost his wife to a deranged killer – The Laughing Mask. Now Jake’s daughter is missing, and he will stop at nothing to get her back. Jake must team up with Det. Kate O’Malley in order to find The Laughing Mask’s lair and the madman himself. In darkness a father will face one of the most murderous killers ever known: The Laughing Mask.

Director Aguiar says of the teaser and the film: “My idea for this film was to have a thriller and horror film in the vein of Angel Heart (1987) and John Carpenter’s Halloween; I wanted to keep all the effects as practical as possible. This is an old school horror film, and I hope fans will be pleased with the results.”

Synopsis:
The Laughing Mask begins with Jake Johnson. After the brutal death of his wife, Jaycee, and the disappearance of his daughter, Barbara, Jake will do whatever is necessary to capture the man the media has dubbed “The Laughing Mask.” As the corpses begin to pile up, Jake has to find help in the detective skills of Kate O’Malley. Together they will play a deadly cat and mouse game with a killer in order to find Jake’s daughter and avenge the death of his wife. But The Laughing Mask knows of Jake’s desires for revenge, and he has plans of his own.

Look for release details later this year, and for more info in the meantime visit The Laughing Mask on Facebook.

The Den Director Zachary Donohue Talks Voyeurism, Found Footage, and Webcams

$

0

The Den Director Zachary Donohue Talks Voyeurism, Found Footage and WebcamsThe film The Den (review) brings a whole new, and much-needed, twist to the found-footage sub-genre of horror. Recently director and co-writer Zachary Donohue sat down with Dread Central to talk about his film.

For starters, Donohue discussed what he hoped to convey to the audience with The Den. "This is unlike any found footage movie you've ever seen," he said. "We wanted to create a movie that felt like you were on your own computer screen."

He added, "We wanted to convey this voyeuristic sense that maybe you shouldn't be watching this movie because you're privy to this character's emails, her chats. We really just wanted to tap into that idea of voyeurism."

But more than just peeping in on someone's life, Donohue also wanted The Den to portray the internet as it actually exists. "We wanted to create a funhouse," he said. "This is a movie about the internet, and there's a lot of weird and wild stuff out there. We wanted to generate a lot of scares but say something about the internet right now and present a kinda funny commentary about that. There are some moments in the movie where you should laugh and find [them] funny, not just scary."

The inspiration for the film came from an experience Donohue's writing partner, Lauren Thompson, had that was reenacted quite specifically in the film. "Lauren and I both moved together to LA, and she got a job working for this chat roulette site," Donohue said. "She would go around and poll people about their opinions on the site. So it was a noble cause, but everyone who was on the site was kind of a troll and they would either divert the conversation or just be really weird and silly. She came across this still image of a girl and had a really weird text conversation with her saying, 'Hey, why don't you turn your webcam on? It's a little creepy talking to this disembodied voice...' Well, she was typing to it so it wasn't a voice. She was like, 'This is really weird.' So we just started playing scenarios out in our heads like, 'Hey, what if this is a guy, or what if somebody turned on the camera and you witnessed a murder?' So we really liked that setup. From there we presented it in a traditional slasher formula. And I've always been a big horror guy since I was a kid and always wanted to make a movie like Dario Argento or in the vein of Halloween or The Burning."

Of course the unique thing about The Den is basically the entire film appears to be footage captured on webcams. This obviously would present Donohue with some challenges he wouldn't get if filming in a more traditional style. He spoke about how the webcam approach affected his work. "When we wrote our first draft, we realized a lot of the scares were sort of the same so we had to generate different things as opposed to just a creepy guy showing up behind the girl's shoulder," Donohue said. "A lot of thought went into how we should craft interesting moments that are scary that feel like a traditional horror movie with angles and cutaways. We also wanted to see how we could use the limitations of the webcams to our advantage. It's pretty scary that a lot of times you can't see what's off-frame, and we really wanted to play around with all of the best scenarios for scares with those limitations."

And although it isn't exactly a blood-soaked film, The Den does have some impressive effects. "We did manage to get a few good gags in, but at the end of the day, it was really how can we pull off these violent acts while servicing the story," Donohue said. "It's more about the story; how does the gore serve the story and feel real as opposed to a regular slasher where Jason cuts someone's head off and it's all about that."

Finally, Donohue spoke about Melanie Papalia. She is the lead actress and the face of The Den. There aren't many moments in the movie without Papalia in them so it was important to get just the right actress to play the part of Elizabeth Benton. "The casting audition was very intense because really the movie is all Elizabeth," Donohue said. "So with Melanie we wanted to see if she was interesting when she's not doing much and when she's big, when the scares are happening, can she scream well. That's always important for these kinds of movies. But also, does she bring that intensity that's going to put the audience on the edge of their seats? I'm very delighted that she took the leap of faith because there were a lot of scenes we were doing where it was very bizarre and unnatural. My direction would be like, 'Eyes to the left and imagine there's a thing on the side of the screen. Now move your eyes to the right.' A lot of small things that, when we were done, she'd be asking, 'Was that right?' I'd be able to tell her that it was going to look great, and she'd be really excited about it. Melanie is a very cool person, and she loves horror movies and has always wanted to be in one. It was great working with her because we were both kind of starting out. I'm happy we did this together."

From director Zach Donohue comes The Den, starring Melanie Papalia, Adam Shapiro, David Schlactenhaufen, and Matt Riedy.

Look for it from IFC Midnight in select theaters and on VOD on Friday, March 14th, 2014.

Synopsis
After receiving a grant for her graduate thesis, Elizabeth Benton (Papalia) logs on to a video chat site known as THE DEN on a mission to explore the habits of its users. During one of her random video chats, Elizabeth watches in horror as a teenage girl is gruesomely murdered in front of her webcam. While the police dismiss it as a viral prank, Elizabeth believes what she saw is real and takes it upon herself to find the truth.

Her life quickly spirals out of control as she gets pulled deeper into the darkest recesses of the internet. And eventually Elizabeth finds herself trapped in a twisted game in which she and her loved ones are targeted for the same grisly fate as the first victim.

Spec Sci-fi/Thriller Script Aether Acquired by FilmNation

Spec Sci-fi/Thriller Script Aether Acquired by FilmNationWord on a new spec script that was just acquired by FilmNation landed online today, and we have the very sketchy early details on the sci-fi/thriller known as Aether.

Per Deadline, FilmNation Entertainment will produce, finance, and handle worldwide sales on the sci-fi thriller Aether, written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns. FilmNation is moving quickly, already looking for a director for the British writer’s script.

Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but FilmNation is obviously quite high on it. "I’m astounded by the level of talent and inventiveness we’ve come across from such a young voice," said FilmNation production president Aaron Ryder. "We’re terribly excited to produce this film. We’re also anxious to learn how to pronounce its title!"

Wilson-Cairns initially developed the script with her UK agent and then finished it on spec. It was brought in by FilmNation Director of Development Patrick Chu. Ryder, along with EVP Karen Lunder, will shepherd the project. The deal was done by FilmNation’s Alison Cohen and United Agents’ Marnie Podos and attorney Tara S. Kole.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be working alongside such a talented group of like-minded people," said Wilson-Cairns. "FilmNation makes the kind of movies I love to watch, and I am so pleased we’ve put Aether into their safe hands."

Look for more on this one should it be deemed Dread-worthy.

In Fear Director Jeremy Lovering Talks Changeling Remake

$

In Fear Director Jeremy Lovering Talks Changeling RemakeJust released on home video this week was a highly effective indie thriller called In Fear, which marked the feature debut of Jeremy Lovering. The flick totally whet my appetite for more from the filmmaker, and it looks like he may next be remaking a classic. Read on!

In an interview with Fangoria, Lovering revealed that he's currently working on a remake of the 1980 haunted house flick The Changeling, which he recently completed a script treatment for.

"I’m really nervous about it, for obvious reasons," he told Fango. "The original is an extraordinarily good film, and I’ve tried to take a kind of alternative point of view—doing the scenes you don’t see, the ones in between those that are in the film. THE CHANGELING has such iconic, much-copied sequences, and obviously loads of directors, from James Wan to [THE WOMAN IN BLACK’s] James Watkins and a whole bunch of others, happily acknowledge THE CHANGELING as a massively influential film. It’s the same producers [as the original] who want to make it, and it has been a very interesting process, but I’m still trying to decide whether it’s the right thing to do or not."

Lovering says he wrote the treatment after being approached about directing the film based on someone else's script, which he wasn't so keen on doing.

"There was a screenplay in existence that they had already commissioned," said the British filmmaker. "They sent me that draft and it’s very well-written, but it’s not the film I want to make. THE CHANGELING is one of the few movies that genuinely scared me, and it still does, so I didn’t want to touch it at first. But then I started conversations with them and told them I didn’t feel the script. I want to re-engage with it in a different way, and they told me to go write my own screenplay. I was like, ‘I’ll just write a treatment because I don’t know if it’s gonna work for me,’ and I literally delivered it the other day."

Throughout the interview Lovering expressed doubts as to whether or not it'd be a good idea to remake such a classic film, which lets us know that his head is in the right place. "If I just did it as a cut-and-paste, there’d be no point," he says, "but if I can bring it to a new audience, then maybe it could work.

In the meantime be sure to check out In Fear, which proves that Lovering knows how to convey pure terror!

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Confident AMC Won't Sabotage Preacher AdaptationIt's been a big week for news about Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's small screen adaptation of Garth Ennis' comic series Preacher, which began when the duo revealed the AMC series will remain faithful to the comics. But will the show be as gory and nudity-filled as the comics are?

Let's find out!

In an interview with Ain't It Cool News, Rogen and Goldberg seemed pretty confident that AMC won't force them to take out too much of the good stuff, which quells some of the fears that the move to the small screen will water down the source material.

"We went into AMC last week with Garth Ennis, and I've never felt like a studio or network was more on the same page with us," said Goldberg. "We pitched them, and they said, 'Perfect! That's exactly what we wanted to hear. No notes.'"

"The religious stuff, they're totally cool with," continued Rogen. "The violence, they're totally cool with. The nudity is hard, but we can find ways around that. Overall, it was one of the best meetings I've ever had, honestly."

Though Rogen commented that things will inevitably have to change to make the show fit to air on AMC, he says that Ennis is totally happy with how things are playing out this far and the changes will be as minor as possible.

"He couldn't have been more receptive and couldn't have been more vocal about the fact that he knows there's a core thing that needs to be maintained," said the pot-smoking funny man, referring to Ennis, "but other than that there's a lot of stuff that you can lose."

Rogen went on to say that he and Goldberg are such big fans of the comics that it's going to be hard for them to do wrong by other fans. "I think our tone is honestly directly influenced by the Preacher graphic novels," he said, which should be music to the ears of all fellow fans.

It's certainly music to ours!

Religious Quack Pat Robertson Warns that Horror Movies Give Demons Permission to Destroy Your LifeHe opposes gay marriage. He refers to non-Christians as "termites." And now controversial televangelist Pat Robertson warns that horror movies can, and will, destroy your life.

It all began when a viewer of Robertson's show "The 700 Club: wrote in, wondering if recent exposure to a horror film was perhaps to blame for a car accident she got in while on her way home from church.

"I was watching a horror movie the other day [on] the recommendation of others," the viewer wrote. "It was rather strange and awfully macabre. And then this past Sunday, I got into an accident leaving church."

"Did watching that movie cause a curse -- or the Lord's protection to be lifted from me?" she asked. "Did I grieve the Holy Spirit by watching this series?"

Silly, right? Well, Robertson doesn't think so. After assuring the woman that he was pretty confident that a movie wasn't to blame for that particular accident, he went on to say that it's entirely possible for horror films to allow demons to enter your soul and that we should all be careful of the entertainment we choose to ingest.

"A few years ago I heard about a teenage girl who was demon possessed, and people began to deal with the demon and try to cast it out," he recalled. "And you know what the demon said? 'I had permission.' And the permission was granted when this child had gone to some double-X-rated movie, or whatever it was, and had allowed this thing to come into her."

"I know this sounds kind of otherworldly, but that's the way it is," he continued. "So, could it have happened to you? Yes. I don't think it did, but [it] could have."
