A new Facebook page has launched for Jeff Broadstreet's Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation that's home to lots of eye candy both from the flick and behind-the-scenes. Some are even in 3D if you have some glasses handy! Dig it!

Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation stars Andrew Divoff and Jeffrey Combs. A prequel, the story begins one full day before the zombie outbreak occurs in the 2006 film. Also starring are Sarah Lieving (The Dunwich Horror), Robin Sydney (The Lost) and Denice Duff (Subspecies) as “Sister Sara”, a Sarah Palin-esque figure who unwittingly walks into the zombie outbreak and meets a fitting end. If only this were the real world! We don't think Palin could ever handle herself in a "squirmish" with the dead.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Ratline's Eric Stanze

    $

    0

Without a doubt, independent filmmaker Eric Stanze is one of the more seasoned and exciting storytellers working today. Ever since opening the doors on his production company Wicked Pixel Cinema in 1995, he's produced 20 different projects, and out of those he's directed 9 as well as lending a hand in other capacities for the rest.

Stanze also recently served as the Second Unit Director on Jim Mickle's Stake Land (which is how we found out about this indie superstar), and his latest directorial effort - Ratline (review here) - recently made its way to DVD this past September and since its release has landed on many Top 10 lists of 2011 as well as nabbing a few awards during the 2011 PollyGrind Film Festival.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Ratline's Eric Stanze

After recently checking out Ratline- Stanze's incredible Nazi occultism/love story/crime thriller mash-up- Dread Central caught up with the filmmaker to hear more about what inspired his ambitious flick as well as his thoughts on working alongside his frequent co-collaborators Jason Christ and Emily Haack, the truth about the real-life Nazi experimentation that influenced his disturbing tale and the driving force behind his need to tell as many stories as he can before his filmmaking days are done (not that that's going to happen anytime soon).

Dread Central: Considering all of the different themes you have swimming around in Ratline, I would love to hear more about what inspired you and Jason while writing the script.

Eric Stanze: Ratline probably started off with us evaluating our resources and seeing what kind of movie we could pull off. One general idea behind Ratline was to make something like a feature length "X-Files" episode, in terms of story, but do it very gritty, very adult, very NC-17.  Some have noted the '70s grindhouse tone to Ratline.  I am inspired by films from the late '60s through early '80s, including those seedy exploitation films, but I didn't want to make another "retro grindhouse" movie that essentially parodies that kind of film.  I love other films that have done it in the recent past, but I didn't want to take Ratline down that course.  So our movie gravitated toward being a more serious, Giallo influenced flick - pulp cinema that plays everything straight so that it sells dark and sinister.

We approached Ratline not really conscientiously blending any sort of subgenres- we knew the story we wanted to tell and that we wanted to keep audiences guessing, which was our main goal. We've heard a lot of great feedback from people who said we kept surprising them throughout, and that's the best kind of feedback to get. A lot of movies just don't surprise you anymore- hell, it's like they don't even want to try and surprise you anymore, and it's definitely something important to me as a filmmaker- to keep viewers guessing from beginning to end.

Jason wasn't quite on board with the idea at first of doing an exploitation film centered around Nazi occultism, but once he understood where I wanted to go with it, he caught on and really embraced it.

DC: The idea of Nazis dabbling in the dark arts is some pretty creepy stuff- how close to historical fact did you play it in Ratline?

Stanze: Oh yeah, I did quite a bit of research and discovered a lot of really weird and disturbing things about the Nazis.  Because I enjoy exploring dark and 'out there' stories and then grounding them within the context of historical fact, doing homework for Ratline was important to me. Plus, I think that just makes the story all the more creepy if it has a note of realism to it- what's scarier than real life? And Jason and I realized early on in our professional relationship that we both have so much we want to do and that we're both probably going to die before we get to make all of the movies we want to make, and that's how the idea of immortality made its way into the Ratline script. We all want our legacy to live on forever and Frank wants to live out his legacy forever.

DC: Both Jason and Emily deliver incredibly subtle and strong performances here, and I know that the three of you collaborate together a lot; can you talk about your working relationship with the pair and how much they inspired their characters in the film?

Stanze: First and foremost, Emily has this naturally haunted quality about her; whenever there's a close-up on her face, there's always something that draws you right into her performance because she's so engaging. She's never given me a bad performance, and for as far as I've pushed her as an actress throughout all of the films we've done together, she's always been a complete professional and has delivered work that's been above and beyond anything I could have ever expected. There have been things I have had to ask her to do in movies that were definitely extreme, but she always knows that if she needs to draw the line, she can. She hasn't done it yet- mostly because she is truly fearless.

Even though Jason and I co-wrote the screenplay together, he never really knew that I had him in mind from the very start to play Frank. I'm not sure why I didn't tell him, and at first he wasn't sure about doing it, but he knew how great a role it was and said yes after a little persuading.

DC: Let's talk a bit more about Jason's performance. I loved how subtle and 'average guy' he played his villain- how important was it to you for him not to be the mustache-twirling type of bad guy?

Stanze: That was huge actually- I wanted to stay away from the typical movie Nazi stereotypes, and to me what makes Frank so terrifying is that he IS so average; he's a chameleon who could acclimate into any community and no one would have any idea what kind of monster was living there. Until Ratline Jason had never been given the opportunity to play a lead in a feature film, but I knew that this was the perfect project and character for him to take that leap with.

DC: Considering the ending route you went with, do you have any plans on revisiting the world of Ratline for a sequel down the line?

Stanze: You know, I didn't really write Ratline this way in hopes to make a sequel; really, going with an open ending just felt right even though it's something we struggled with for a while.  The ambiguity of the ending is what served the story best so while I think it's great people are looking for a follow-up, it wasn't our intention when we started this to do anything beyond this movie.  That's not to say I wouldn't make a sequel, it's just not what I'm focused on now.

In terms of my next movie, I'm not sure what that will be exactly just yet. I have a few things in the works so we'll see how everything goes. I loved doing second unit work on Stake Land so I'd even love if more of those opportunities happened, too.

After giving fans so many horror stories to fall in love with for over 30 years now, there's not much that hasn't already been said a million times regarding John Carpenter's contributions to our beloved genre, which is why for Indie Horror Month we decided to let the man speak for himself.

Last month Dread Central headed over to Carpenter's office for an exclusive video interview with the iconic filmmaker, and during our chat we heard from him on a multitude of topics ranging from his earliest film - Dark Star - to his latest directorial effort - The Ward - and pretty much everything else that has happened in between.

In Part One of our video interview, Carpenter talks about his experiences working on his early independent horror features including Dark Star, Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween and The Fog as well as more on his transition to the world of television movies when he helmed the Elvis TV mini-series which starred frequent Carpenter collaborator Kurt Russell.

And even though Carpenter's horror/sci-fi classic The Thing was a studio project, we also chatted with the legendary director about that film in honor of the upcoming 30th anniversary of its theatrical release date.

A Not-So Close Look at Some Cold Skin Creature Concept Art

Director Xavier Gens took a moment to share with fans a bit of concept art from his flick Cold Skin that features the flick's monster. David Slade was once attached to direct this adaptation of the Albert Sánchez Piñol novel before Gens took the reigns.

We wouldn't look for this anytime soon, though, as it's been kicking around since 2009 and Gens is in currently in development on several other projects including James Wan's House of Horrors.

Cold Skin was Piñol's debut novel. The book chronicles the stay of an unnamed weather official on a remote island in the south Atlantic close to the Antarctic Circle. The film adaptation was written by 28 Weeks Later's Jesus Olmo.

Check out the artwork below by Jonathan Delerue.

    Synopsis
On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, in the years after World War One, a steamship approaches a desolate island far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man, on his way to assume the post of weather observer, to live in solitude at the end of the earth. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea. Then night begins to fall...

Become a Part of Daniel Knauf's Bxx: Haunted

Become a Part of Daniel Knauf's Bxx: HauntedWe've been ranting and raving about the new project from Daniel Knauf, Bxx: Haunted, for over a month now, and if you're at all acquainted with the series he did for HBO, "Carnivale", then you're likely to be pretty excited as well. Now we have your chance to go beyond excitement.

Are you an aspiring digital FX artist? How would you like to get a shot at scoring a line-credit on the latest project by Daniel Knauf, the creator of cult TV sensation "Carnivale"? That's right, kids. Now YOU can join in on the madness! We'll let Daniel take it from here...

"We have a single shot in which a man is bludgeoned to death with a monkeywrench," explains Knauf, "It's captured from four angles. We did the digital blood effects inhouse. Though they were passable, they weren't great. So I thought, hey, Bxx is an Internet project, crowd-funded and sourced since inception. So let's crowd-source the fucker!"

Knauf ran the idea past us, and we agreed it was a grand idea. And thus was born "The Great Kill the Crap Out of Mr. Blaylock and Snag a Credit Contest".

Co-sponsored by Bxx and Dread Central. Open to everyone, amateurs, professionals, and hobbyists alike.

The challenge? Create an absolutely realistic digital bludgeoning. Blood-spatter. Cracked skull. Brains. Blood slowly spreading under the victim.

The reward? Knauf will use the winner's shot in Bxx: Haunted, and the winning artist will receive a "Digital Gore FX by" line-credit on the site's roll. Plus bragging rights. Plus an invite to the Bxx: Haunted wrap party!

But, like all great opportunities, this one is fleeting; the deadline is a mere 10 days from now on MARCH 16, 2012.

"The winning entry will be the one that looks the most absolutely real," suggests Knauf. "The artist needs to match the source video's resolution and color settings. This isn't HD. We shot Haunted on SD security video cams with fairly high compression rates so the image can be a bit degraded. Match that, and you're halfway there."

    Other hints:

"Go real-real, not movie-real," Knauf cautions, "and don't do anything to the overall image such as color-correction or global settings. We'll be applying our own settings to the winning shot to ensure it matches the rest of our video."

To enter, simply download the Quicktime file here, load it into your favorite imaging suite, and kill the ever-living crap out of Mr. Blaylock from four angles (granted, Mr. Blaylock isn't visible in one of the shots, but a pretty blond actress seated across the table from him is, and she's bound to get drenched in cast-off blood and, erm... matter.

Once you've nailed it, simply upload it to your favorite video sharing site, and send the link to contest@bxxweb.com.

Your work will be judged by Knauf and his team, and the winner will be announced here at Dread Central on Friday, March 16th.

P.S. Knauf has informed us that the limited, invitation-only launch is filling up fast. If you want to be among the first 5,000 online guests to experience it, go to the official Bxx: Haunted website, and enter your email address on the signup page. Quickly. Today. Now. Also be sure to follow @BxxWeb on Twitter for more.

The Great Kill the Crap Out of Mr. Blaylock Contest from Daniel Knauf on Vimeo.

Bxx: Haunted is an entirely new form of cinematic storytelling, leveraging the technology of the Internet. Shot over 48 hours using dozens of cameras, Knauf has taken almost 800 hours of raw video and created a non-linear story that is meant to be viewed as one browses the Net: follow what interests you, browse deeper to learn more, back out and go somewhere else if you get bored.

The goal is to have viewers create the experience they want to see, to more or less become filmmakers creating their own experience on the fly.

For his first work in this new format, Knauf chose to tell the story of a paranormal investigation gone very, very wrong. Six people, one house, 48 hours. What will happen?

First Leprechaun's Revenge Clips Prove to Be Unlucky!

It took four different name changes before Syfy finally settled on a title for Drew Daywalt’s feature debut Leprechaun’s Revenge, no doubt hoping to sucker a few fans who might be thinking this is the newest installment of the Leprechaun franchise. As you’ll see in these two clips, this leprechaun is definitely not Warwick Davis.

Billy Zane slammed evil as The Phantom. Can he slam a leprechaun terrorizing a small Louisiana town?

William Devane was drowned in a swimming pool by Hollow Man. Will a similar fate await him when the most monstrous movie leprechaun to date lets it be known how it really feels about St. Patrick’s Day?

    Synopsis:
Sixty-six years ago the town of Irish Channel in Louisiana was the site of a horrible massacre on St. Patrick's Day. Some blame a terrible storm that blew through the town, but those that were there don't speak of the truth. Due to petty superstitions St. Patrick's Day festivities were banned for the last 66 years, but now the new Mayor wants to tempt fate and celebrate.

And you thought just getting a punch to the shoulder for not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day was bad enough.

The film by “Death Valley” filmmaker Drew Daywalt and written by Boo helmer Anthony C. Ferrante that has previously been titled St. Patrick’s Day Leprehaun, Leprechaun, and Red Clover is set to make its Syfy world premiere on March 17th, a Saturday night, of course, at 9/8 Central. Just in time for St. Paddy’s Day, no less.

Syfy has posted two clips from Leprechaun’s Revenge that will make it abundantly clear this is not to be confused with the Warwick Davis Leprechaun films. Is that a leprechaun or an Irish chupacabra?

Great news for those of you out there ready to get punch drunk and fend off creatures! IFC Films has taken the U.S. distribution rights to the sensation that is Grabbers (review here) and will be releasing the flick via VOD, in theatres, and on DVD later this year! Drink up!

Helmed by Jon Wright and penned by Kevin Lehane, the creature feature stars Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), Ruth Bradley (Flyboys), and Russell Tovey ("Being Human" UK).

    Synopsis:
Ciarán O’Shea, the handsome though washed up policeman of sleepy Erin Island, has a daily routine consisting mainly of hanging out at the pub with the local drunks and various other charmingly eccentric characters. But his day is about to go horribly wrong.

Teamed up with the unwanted help of Lisa – an uptight workaholic policewoman from the Irish mainland – they suddenly find themselves dealing with dead whales, decapitated fishermen and weird alien creatures or “grabbers”. Like a giant squid with tentacles, fanged jaws and a three-foot barbed tongue, they’re making mincemeat of the locals.

Faced with another imminent attack, O’Shea and Lisa figure out that the only person to survive the last onslaught only did so because he was so drunk his blood was literally toxic to the monsters. So there is only one thing for it: They have to get the entire village as drunk as possible in order to survive the night ... a task that the villagers apply themselves to with gusto.

But one person must remain sober so for the first time in years O’Shea has to face up to things without a drink. When things don’t go to plan, an extremely drunk Lisa and a very sober O’Shea have to reconcile their differences and somehow save the day.

    Quick Silent Hill: Revelation Update

With three video games releasing this month, the big question fans of the Silent Hill franchise have is, "Where the hell is the new movie?" Director Michael J. Bassett took to his blog recently with an answer.

"I have lots of pictures, interviews, trailers, even a finished movie," says Bassett, "but the people who have invested their money in making this film have chosen, rightly or wrongly, to hold back the release of anything until they have a release schedule for the film they’re happy with. It is their choice, and even as it’s frustrating as hell for me, I respect that this is how they wish to play it."

From our perspective, as long as the flick itself is worth the wait, then take your time. We'll have plenty of digital ashy goodness in video game land to weed through for at least several months!

Bassett directs the sequel that stars Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Deborah Kara Unger, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Malcolm McDowell.

Look for it hopefully sometime in 2012 from Lionsgate.

    Synopsis
For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Frankenstein's Army Officially Filming! First Behind-the-Scenes Still!

There is a god, and he/she is obviously a fan of Frankenstein's monster! That's right, kids, after waiting years and years Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army is now in front of cameras!

MPI/Dark Sky Films, LA-based XYZ Films, and Pellicola of Amsterdam have announced that the first day of principal photography on Richard Raaphorst's long-awaited debut feature, Frankenstein's Army, has been completed in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The stunning ancient location, situated near historic Prague, was also recently used in the 2006 box office hit Casino Royale.

"Frankenstein's Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein's work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades - a desperate Hitler's last ghastly ploy to escape defeat."

Director Raaphorst co-wrote Frankenstein's Army, with the film being produced by Nick Jongerius and Daniel Koefoed (Harry Doright and Dead End) of Pellicola, Todd Brown of XYZ Films, and Derek Curl of MPI/Dark Sky Films. The director of photography is Bart Beekman.

Raaphorst's Worst Case Scenario stands as one of the great horror films that never was. The Nazi-zombie project whipped up a massive international following thanks to two early promo reels. But due to financing and production difficulties, the project was abandoned in 2009. Now, director Raaphorst will bring his visionary design skills to this new horror movie, to be distributed by MPI/Dark Sky Films in North America.

Check out the first behind-the-scenes still below:

Hasbro's Ouija Finally Pointing to Horror FilmWe've been talking about what a missed opportunity it would be to turn a movie called Ouija, based on a board that lets you talk to the dead, into a big budget family extravaganza since the idea was first presented. Finally Hollywood has come to its senses!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal and Hasbro are back in business on Ouija. The studio let go its adaptation of the board game in August due to budgetary concerns, but the project has been reconfigured and re-set up at Universal, which has slated it for release in 2013.

Original producers Michael Bay and Brad Fuller and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes are still on board, but the project now has Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions as a producer as well.

Blum is the microbudget horror maven behind the Paranormal Activity franchise and Insidious, movies that scared audiences and generated huge box office returns. The films are hugely profitable because of their low overhead, suggesting Ouija has been re-conjured at a significantly lower price.

The project ran into trouble at Universal over its sizable budget, said to be just shy of $100 million, which insiders pegged to the big scope of a special-effects-laden family adventure and the cost of having McG (Charlie's Angels, This Means War) on board as a director.

Universal has not named a writer or director and is not revealing a revised logline, but sources say Ouija will follow Blum's high concept, lower budget model. The movies Blumhouse has been making for Universal have been under $5 million, and Ouija is expected to follow suit. It is unlikely to be a found footage movie, something that has been a popular trope of late for low-budget horror flicks.

Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes first partnered on Vigilandia, which is currently in production. After that good working partnership, Universal and Platinum Dunes approached Blumhouse about taking Ouija in a new direction.

Ouija joins two other similarly themed projects that have been gathering a lot of steam - I Am ZoZo and a UK film also known as Ouija. Signs point to an upcoming battle of the boards.

Giallo Tulpa Keeps Slashing; Update from FrightFest Glasgow

Ah, giallos. So wonderfully shot. So pretty to look at. So very, very violent. If we could, we'd watch a new one each day. Thankfully a new one is on its way, and we now have an update on Federico Zampaglione's Tulpa.

    From the Press Release
Italian production company IDF, owned by actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (Il Postino), has begun principal photography on Federico Zampaglione’s eagerly awaited third feature, TULPA.

To be shot entirely on location in Rome over five weeks starting March 5th, TULPA is based on a story by genre veteran Dardano Sacchetti, with a screenplay by Giacomo Gensini and Federico Zampaglione. It is produced by IDF, Giovanni Emidi and Silvia Natill in association with Federico Zampaglione and Claudia Gerini. Director of photography is Giuseppe Di Maio. Makeup and special effects are by Leonardo Cruciano and Bruno Albi Marini with music by Francesco Zampaglione and The Alvarius.

Federico, who is described as 'Italy’s Rob Zombie', said today: “I'm very excited to start shooting TULPA, but I’m aware it’s a very difficult film to make. I need to maintain a constant creepy and oppressive atmosphere, and the violence is actually very, very graphic.”

A seven-minute teaser clip recently shown at Film4 FrightFest Glasgow was greeted with enthusiastic applause, which for Federico, following on from the international success of his first feature Shadow, increases the pressure on him.

“I have to prove myself. It's a real challenge, but I’ll do my best to give new blood to the Italian giallo genre".

Award-winning actress Claudia Gerini, who has just completed a leading role as Marie Cecile in Christopher Smith’s TV adaptation of Labyrinth, stars as Lisa Boeri, a respectable and upwardly mobile businesswoman who, by night, frequents the notorious sex club ‘Tulpa’ in search of dangerous forms of pleasure. When her lovers start getting murdered in horrible ways, to avoid a personal scandal, she tries to deal with it herself with truly nightmarish consequences.

TULPA also stars Michele Placido (Romanzo Criminale), one of Italy’s most renowned actors/directors, alongside Nuot Arquint (Shadow) and Michela Cescon (Sacred Heart).

Feast Your Eye on this Trailer for Another Asian Horror Flick

Another adaptation is on its way for another horror novel from Japan which has been turned into another movie that will no doubt be remade here in the States by another movie company, thereby turning it into another piece of crap that we end up hating.

Check out the trailer and artwork for Takeshi Furusawa's big screen take on the novel Another by Yukito Ayatsuji after the monster-sized plot crunch below.

    Synopsis
In 1972, a very popular honor student named Misaki died partway through the school year in Yomiyama Middle School’s class 3-3. His peers, devastated by the unexpected loss, decided to carry on as if the student were still alive, going so far as to keep his desk in place and bringing it to the graduation ceremony. Yet, no one could explain why the dead classmate was present in the graduation photo.

In spring 1998, 15-year-old student Kōichi Sakakibara arrives from Tokyo in Yomiyama to stay with his grandparents while his father works in India. He transfers into class 3-3 but misses the first few weeks as a pneumothorax keeps him hospitalized. While in the hospital, he receives a visit from his classmates and meets a mysterious girl wearing his school’s uniform called Mei Misaki, who seems to be visiting the morgue.

Once recovered, Kōichi goes to school and tries to adapt. His aunt, a teacher at Yomiyama North, gives him a few pointers but, like his peers, remains evasive when it comes to their behavior towards Mei, who is treated by all as if she did not exist. Kōichi is further confounded by the air of mystery around class 3-3 and the fact that it is isolated from other classes, even practicing P.E. separately.

Things go from bad to worse when a classmate, Yukari Sakuragi, slips while running down the stairs and dies, impaled on the sharp end of her umbrella. This is one of many deaths related to Class 3-3 which have Kōichi and his friends Mei, Naoya Teshigawara, Tomohiko Kazami, and Yūya Mochizuki, trying to unravel the mystery of 1972’s Misaki and the "calamity" that has struck Class 3-3 ever since.
