"RIGHT Concept art imagines the surreal effect of the giant monsters, such as this nuclear submarine dropped in the mountains. “I love this shot,” says Edwards. We struggled with trying to find a position for the submarine that didn’t feel too silly, but you could still read it from a distance. This is a shot that’s never in the film, they don’t actually approach it from the boat, but again, things get drawn just to give it flavor.”"

Vintage Video Shows Jean-Claude Van Damme in Original Predator Costume

Vintage Video Shows Jean-Claude Van Damme in Original Predator CostumeSomething you might not know about Predator is that Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original choice to play the monstrous title character before being replaced by the late Kevin Peter Hall. Just as the actor was changed, so, too, was the suit as this hilarious new video reveals.

Posted on YouTube this week by the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, the vintage video of Van Damme donning the original Predator suit is joined together with a new interview with makeup effects artist Steve Johnson, who at long last reveals the true story behind the creature costume that almost was.

The never-before-seen video gives us a better look at the original outfit than past pictures have ever shown us, and Johnson's memories of the ill-fated costume are absolutely hilarious. Van Damme, he recalls, wasn't at all happy about the look of the suit, thinking that an incredibly goofy version of it that was being used for the invisibility cloaking scenes represented the way that the actual character was going to look on film. You so silly, Jean-Claude.

Enjoy this one, folks!

Exclusive Interview With Proxy Director Zack Parker

$

Exclusive Interview With Proxy Director Zack ParkerIn his latest movie Proxy (review), indie filmmaker Zack Parker takes on some pretty brutal subject matter – the murder of a late-term fetus, lesbian obsession, secrets, lies, and stalkers. And that’s just for starters! Read on to see what Parker has to say about all this and more.

Dread Central: You've been making films since you were a child... What's the enduring fascination for you?

Zack Parker: I don’t think it’s something I can necessarily pinpoint. I’ve just always had a connection to movies. Almost felt I understood them in a strange way. My parents divorced when I was pretty young. My mother worked, so I was just one of those generation of kids that grew up in front of the television. That was the world I knew.

My dad bought a small Hi 8 video camera when I was eleven, and I just started making little short movies with them. Mostly clay-animation at first (the California Raisins and the Domino’s Noid were both popular at the time), then later I started making things with friends.

Once I got into middle/high school, I would always try to make a movie, or shoot a scene from a book, to get out of doing a book report or some other kind of project. It was just fun, so it never felt like work.

Like most young artists, I’m sure your parents think that you’re going through a phase, or will grow out it. I come from a place that has zero connections to movies or Hollywood, and this is pre-internet, which made it feel even further away. It’s the only career path I’ve ever pursued. I think once I made the decision at nineteen to leave collage and move to LA, my family started to take it seriously.

In regard to where it will all lead, I guess that remains to be seen. I’ve been fortunate thus far to make the films I want, how I want, and where I want. I suppose that is what’s most important to me; to continue to tell stories that I have a connection with and to maintain whatever voice I may have.

DC: Your first feature, Inexchange, has been compared to Carrie. Why do you think that is, and what do you think of all the remakes of the 70s classics? (Specifically, Carrie). That was in 2006... can you talk about how the accelerated rate of bullying and revenge in today's online world might affect you if you'd made that film today?

ZP: I suppose the Carrie comparisons came through the bullying aspect, and possibly through the stylistic choices made throughout the film. As for remakes; some work, most don’t. I certainly understand the business thinking of it. Taking a successful piece of material that has survived for decades, then repackaging and contemporizing it for a new generation in an attempt to recapture that success. I have no allusions about film being a business. It’s a necessary evil.

As films grow older they tend to take on a bit of nostalgia for audiences. I prefer the original Carrie, but perhaps that is because I saw it at a time where films were having a huge impression on me. I prefer the aesthetics of it more than the remake. It’s not that the newer one is particularly a bad film, it just wasn’t a new experience for me. It’s not going to have the same impact because I know the original so well. But, when I watch the original now, I can remember that feeling of seeing it for the first time, that nostalgia. I believe this is why every time I watch it, it still feels like a new experience.

As for would I change anything in Inexchange if I made it today; on the technical side, definitely. It was my first feature, so it is very difficult for me to watch it now. But story-wise, I don’t think I would change much. Of course, the lack of technology (cell phones, iPads, etc.) makes it feel dated, but I think the overall message is still quite relevant.

DC: In your new movie, Proxy, you focus on some really dark material... the in-utero baby murder was especially disturbing... do you take your cues from real life, like say, the killing of Sharon Tate or the recent spate of fetal abduction assaults? Or is it purely as a filmmaker thinking: What's really going to be brutal? How can I freak out the audience?

ZP: I always take a bit from real life, though typically not through news headlines. They tend to be aspects of my own life that I am dealing with, or subjects that I am fascinated by and want to explore.

Due to the structure of this particular film, I knew I had to hit the audience hard early on. I tend to be what some would call a “slow burn” filmmaker. I like a story to take time, and to build up a development of the characters and their world. I knew that if I could knock the audience off balance quickly, give them this feeling that anything could happen in this film, it would earn me the time to start to build the story. It’s almost a promise; stick with me, and something like this will happen again later. I find it ends up creating a nice innate bit of suspense and tension as the film unfolds.

DC: You put your actresses through hell in Proxy. Did any of them hesitate after their initial reading of the script?

ZP: I knew that these roles were going to go to some pretty dark places, and probably be quite challenging. So I was looking for actresses that were going to embrace those challenges, and in my mind, fall in love with the story for all the right reasons.

Alexia Rasmussen and Alexa Havins (who play Esther and Melanie, respectively) were two of several actresses that were submitted to me and whom I met with. Both really seemed to understand and be enthusiastic about the kind of film I was attempting to make. I think Alexia really responded to the introverted and broken psyche of Esther, and her potential to be a very unlikely and unconventional female lead. As for Alexa, I think she was excited about the dual nature of her character, the facade that controls her life. As a mother herself, I know there were times where it was quite difficult for her to go to those dark places, but she is a consummate professional, and executed the role quite beautifully.

Kristina Klebe’s character had to undergo the largest physical change. She did a lot of training through weightlifting and boxing. We were trying to transform not only her silhouette, but the way she moved. Her character is fueled by passion and ferocity, and it was important for both of us that the physical matched the emotional.

DC: There's one really arresting scene in Proxy, where someone is shot. And there's almost a Peckinpah vibe to it. You really keep it slow. And not just slo-mo, but what looks like still frames. Please tell us about the inspiration behind this very unusual and risky choice. Any cinematic influences for this?

ZP: The film undergoes a big change at the halfway point, so I really wanted to create this marquee sequence around that. I was in love with the super slow-motion sequences that (Lars) von Trier was doing in Antichrist and Melancholia with the Phantom camera. Since our scene was dealing largely with water and blood, it occurred to me that this could potentially be a beautiful way to execute it.

That entire sequence was shot at 1500fps. So, though it does look like still frames at some points, it is actually still moving pictures. I feel like when you when slow things down that much, the violence and gore become somewhat balletic. I knew the sequence would live or die by the score that was driving it, and as always, the Newton Brothers created an exquisitely haunting piece that elevates the whole scene to another level.

DC: What will horror fans like best about Proxy?

ZP: As with all of my films, the reactions have been quite polarizing. Some are really embracing it, some not. Personally, I’m still not sure I would call it a horror film, simply because I don’t want to create incorrect expectations. I think it is very dark and deals with some pretty tough subject matter, but I don’t want people expecting murder and mayhem every ten minutes. I think it is probably a hybrid of several genres. When I set out to make a film, my hope is that it will be something that people haven’t seen before, and executed in way that feels unique.

DC: What's your next project, or what do you hope to be working on it the future?

ZP: I am in the beginning stages of putting together the next one. I have co-written this one again with Kevin Donner, whom I wrote Proxy with. It is a story that I have been developing for several years now. I’m always wanting to progress in my work, and this has been the most complicated screenplay I’ve dealt with to date. It has a larger scope that anything I’ve made before, and if all goes according to plan, we’ll be shooting later this year or early 2015.

Look for Proxy on VOD April 18 with a DVD release to follow.

Alexia Rasmussen, Alexa Havins, Kristina Klebe, and Joe Swanberg star.

Synopsis:
A very pregnant Esther Woodhouse (Rasmussen) is walking home after her latest OB appointment when she is brutally attacked and disfigured by a hooded assailant. When Esther seeks consolation in a support group, she finds friendship and empathy in Melanie (Havins), another mother scarred with tragedy. Esther soon begins to believe that the horrific event might be a bittersweet act of fate. However, friendship and empathy can be very dangerous things when accepted by the wrong people.

Proxy is a European-style suspense-thriller that promises to challenge the traditional cinematic form. Parker has reunited with The Newton Brothers to compose the score as well as Jim Timperman as Director of Photography to lens the film. A notable addition to Parker’s crew is seasoned Special F/X Make-Up Artist James Ojala. Proxy was shot on location in Eastern Indiana.

Slender Man Casts a Long Shadow in New The Eidolon State One-SheetThe Freeze Frame Films team just put out another poster and video teaser for the short film The Eidolon State, which focuses on the haunting sensation that is Slender Man. Check 'em out, and look for more on this one soon!

"You tend to see a lot of found footage films about The Slender Man, most of them based off the popular video game Slender: The Eight Pages," says Freeze Frame Films (Dion Cavallaro, Cain Harrip and Paul Thomas).

"Along with this, most Slender Man films tend to use people in morph suits or morph masks, which we feel is not a correct portrayal of The Slender Man. Our film has been treated with a different approach. We are working on something that uses films such as The Conjuring or Sinister as a guide - detailed stories with beautiful cinematography and a true sense of horror. Along with this, our film never actually refers to the character as 'The Slender Man' but refers to him as 'The Tall Man.' Our main goal is to bring people the Slender Man short film we feel they deserve, similar to how Gareth Edwards is about to deliver the new Godzilla film that fans have been wanting."

Oculus - Special Screening Report and Photos

Oculus - Special Screening Report and PhotosThe stars of the upcoming new and original horror movie Oculus (review) gathered on the red carpet at the Chinese 6 Theater at the famous “Hollywood & Highland” corner to celebrate its premiere – and Dread Central was there!

Some folks say the poster is a little ambiguous so if you haven’t seen our junket video or read our review yet… here’s the scary skinny:

When teenage Kaylie’s younger brother, Tim, was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents, she made it her life’s mission to prove the law was wrong. She believes their deaths were at the supernatural hands of forces unleashed through an eerie antique in their home, The Lasser Glass. Tracing the provenance of the oversized mirror, adult Kaylie tracks it to an auction house, where she purchases it, and with the help of recently released Tim, she takes history’s reflections head-on. But… the mirror makes you see what it wants to you to see. What follows is a complex flip-flop through time with young Tim and Kaylie (played by Garrett Ryan and Annalise Basso) and their mom and dad (Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane), as well as adult Tim and Kaylie (Brenton Thwaites and Karen Gillan) and the malevolent mirror.

Based on his own short film, director Mike Flanagan (Absentia) said it’s difficult to take a short form and recreate the experience of watching it in long form, but he’s happy with the result. Especially as a fan of horror. “It’s a genre that’s not held up to the same standards as others,” he said. But rather than relying on suspense and gore, he strove to have a strong story and an excellent cast.

The short was just one guy alone in a room and was made for fifteen hundred,” he told us. There was “a sense of dread that was present for the whole 28 minutes. But how do you do that for 90 minutes? It’s not easy. It took a long time to figure it out, and we even went through some ideas that completely missed like, ‘Let’s do an anthology movie! It’ll be three stories,’ or ‘Let’s try found footage.’ And so I divorced myself from the plot of the short and went after capturing the essence of the story.

When it came casting his lead and the protagonist of the entire film, there was no doubt about Karen Gillan (the pixyish redhead shot to fame playing Dr. Who’s time-travel companion Amy Pond in the television series). He liked her and she knew it when, upon their first meeting, “He was drinking coffee out of a TARDIS mug, [and so I] realized I had a good chance of getting the role!

Although she herself is not a big watcher of horror, she likes Oculus. “Our movie is not gratuitous or gross. There really is that feeling of going on a roller coaster, which is what a horror film should do. It should be like a thrilling, scary ride that you go on as a fun, shared experience.

Oculus opens nationwide on Friday, April 11.

Karen Gillan ("Doctor Who,"Not Another Happy Ending), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent, The Giver), Rory Cochrane (Argo, Parkland), and Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica,"Riddick) star.

Oculus is directed by Mike Flanagan from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard, based on a short film Flanagan and Jeff Seidman made in 2005. Trevor Macy (Safe House, The Strangers, The Raven) and Marc D. Evans (Safe House, The Strangers, The Raven) produced the film, and Jason Blum, Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, Anil Kurian, D. Scott Lumpkin, Peter Schlessel, Dale Johnson, Glenn Murray, Julie May, and Mike Ilitch, Jr., serve as executive producers.

    Synopsis
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…

    Exclusive Gila! Clip Stomps In

Exclusive Gila! Clip Stomps InTime to add some giant beastie action to your Hump Day! On tap right now is an exclusive clip from the remake of the '50s film The Giant Gila Monster, known simply as Gila! Check it out.

    From the Press Release
"Rock 'n roll is here to stay" despite the best efforts of a giant gila monster in Polyscope's sci-fi comedy movie Gila!, scheduled for release on DVD this April 22nd.

Based loosely on the 1959 sci-fi classic Giant Gila Monster, the revived Gila! features a ferocious, rampaging giant gila monster, classy hot rods, vintage 50's rock 'n roll music, cute co-eds, fist fights, drag racing, and an all-star cast who rally to defend their small town.

"A perfect 'date night' drive-in movie," says producer Bill Dever. "Family fun with music, action, a very scary monster, and a terrific cast. Inspirational sci-fi horror."

It's not all the monster's fault since his giant size and voracious appetite come from accidental toxic chemical contact, and beneath the action, Gila! carries a few contemporary political, social, and environmental messages.

Directed by Jim Wynoski, the movie follows a small-town sheriff and a young hot-rod mechanic as they suddenly face the giant gila monster's surprise attacks - first on farm animals, hapless humans, a passing freight train, and then a small Indiana town busily preparing for the big Christmas rock 'n roll dance.

"It's funny, scary, camp, and relevant," says Dever, "featuring some of the best music of the 1950's and some cool cars." The antique hot rods and classics were provided by a Midwest car club.

Gila! stars veteran television actor Terrence Knox (Tour of Duty, "St. Elsewhere") as the sheriff. The handsome Chase is played by Brian Gross (Red Tails), who races, then rallies with restless hot-rodder Jesse Janzen as Waco Bob and seductress Carla, played with a passionate zing by Christina DeRosa, as they fight the giant gila Monster.

The gila monster is no longer the federally protected and endangered Southwest desert critter thoughtlessly nudged through balsa wood walls in the original movie. Clever EFX and a dangerous man-made chemical spill morph the gila into a monster and cave crickets into chickens. Tracked down and annoyed by the sheriff's nitro explosion that supposedly sealed the cave, the monster breaks through by morning and wreaks havoc.

Town drunk and civil libertarian Compton, played brilliantly by Rich Komenich, saves the day with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and the Second Amendment in the other. His secret stash of machine guns and nitroglycerin - stockpiled to fight Russians or Martians or atomic monsters - has everyone home just in time for Christmas.

Gerald Pauwels plays the classic rich, blowhard mayor who is forced to face the realities of city leadership as he, the sheriff, the hot-rodders, and the town drunk pull together to fight the monster. Actor Don Sullivan, who played hero Chase in the original movie, returns as a scientist.

Gila spit, as we all learned in junior high science and Sullivan reminds us, is bad, but in Gila! giant gila goo dissolves human flesh in wonderful B-movie fashion.
