Lionsgate to Split Third Divergent Novel Allegiant into Two Movies

Lionsgate to Split Third Divergent Novel Allegiant into Two MoviesIn news that should surprise no one given the track record of recent young adult novel adaptations, Lionsgate has announced that Veronica Roth's third Divergent book, Allegiant, is being split into two movies.

    From the Press Release:
Lionsgate will produce and release Allegiant, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James and based on the third book in Veronica Roth's best-selling Divergent trilogy, as two separate films, it was announced today by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

The company will release a total of four Divergent films on its Summit Entertainment label with the next film, Insurgent, which begins production next month, slated for release on March 20, 2015, and Allegiant - Parts 1 and 2 scheduled for release on March 18, 2016, and March 24, 2017, respectively.

The first film in the Divergent franchise is off to a fast start, grossing $117 million at the domestic box office in its first three weeks of release, and it continues its international rollout this weekend with openings in France, Germany, Russia, Australia, Scandinavia, and other major territories. Book sales of the best-selling Divergent series continue to skyrocket with total sales nearing 20 million worldwide and sales of the three-book boxed set and three-book e-bundle increasing 55% last week. The three books ranked one-two-three on the USA Today best-seller list for 2013.

"Veronica Roth brings her captivating story to a masterful conclusion in Allegiant, a rich, action-packed book with material that is ideally suited to two strong and fulfilling movies," said Friedman and Wachsberger. "The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we're tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise."

The company's The Hunger Games and The Twilight Saga franchises have collectively grossed more than $5 billion at the worldwide box office, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the 10th highest-grossing film of all time. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Parts 1 and 2 will be released on November 21, 2014, and November 20, 2015, respectively.

After the cataclysmic events in Insurgent, Tris and Four enter a dangerous new world in Allegiant - Parts 1 and 2 that they no longer recognize. As new truths are revealed about the past and future, Tris must face impossible choices about courage, allegiance, and love to protect the people closest to her.

    Allegiant Book Synopsis
What if your whole world was a lie? What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything? What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The explosive conclusion to Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

New Teaser Trailer Offers Up Deadly Revisions

Teaser Trailer Offers Up Deadly RevisionsWe've been talking about Gregory Blair's Deadly Revisions for some time here on Dread Central, and we're excited to report that the film is now complete and gearing up to slash its way onto the festival circuit. Read all about it, and then check out the new teaser trailer, fiends!

    From the Press Release:
Film fans can now get a sneak peek of writer/director Gregory Blair’s Deadly Revisions with the new teaser trailer released this week. Tight and tense, the teaser reveals just enough to get audiences ready for Blair’s unique blend of psychological thriller and horror film.

Emmy Award-winning horror movie favorite Bill Oberst, Jr., appears as Grafton Torn, an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real. Or can they? With an unreliable narrator, the audience has to keep reevaluating the information they get as the slow burn script piles on increasingly unexpected plot twists. In Deadly Revisions remembering can be murder!

A valentine to the horror genre, the film provides all the spooky staples fans adore: dark passageways, creaking floorboards, and things lurking in the shadows. At the same time there are also loving winks to masters such as Brian De Palma, Sam Raimi, and Alfred Hitchcock. Through the combination of these elements, as our hero examines his past, the film also examines the art of the horror film itself and its own value as a fun and safe place to confront our fears.

The film has already garnered Blair the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film,” and reviewers have lauded it as “amazing” (Chris Mackey, GuestStars Blog) and “mind-blowing” (Char Hardin, Charred Remains Blogpost).

    Paranoia Sets in During 1971

    0

Paranoia Sets in During 1971When it comes to horror movies, the focus is usually on demons, ghosts, monsters, or slashers... but there's another kind of evil out there. One who's silently watching and listening... one with the ability to make people just disappear. One that reared its ugly head in 1971.

Not sure how Dread-worthy this will be, if at all, as thrillers can be sketchy, but we will report back if there's a need to.

    From the Press Release
New York City actor Rich Graff, who recently starred alongside Heather Graham in the rom-com feature film directed by Anthony Edwards My Dead Boyfriend, is gearing up for the world premiere of the dark paranoia fueled thriller 1971, where he morphed himself into daring activist John Raines.

Directed and written by Johanna Hamilton (Pray the Devil Back to Hell) and narrated by John Raines himself, 1971 follows eight ordinary citizens who plotted an intricate break-in of an FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, to leak stolen documents and expose the illegal surveillance of ordinary Americans in an era of anti-war activism.

In this riveting heist story Graff plays John Raines, one of the key members of the Citizens’ Commission who not only drove one of the getaway cars but also planned the rollout after the break-in, including the release of documents to the press. During the making of 1971 the perpetrators reveal themselves for the first time, reflecting on their actions and raising broader questions surrounding security leaks in activism today.

Aside from his leading role as John Raines in 1971, Rich Graff stars in the horror/drama Manson Girls by the award-winning director Susanna Lo and can be seen in the drama-thriller Track 3, set to be screened at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival. Graff has also been featured on major US network TV shows including "30 Rock" and "Law and Order: Criminal Intent."

Four More Sign on to Tangle with The Final Girls Including The Vampire Diaries' Nina DobrevNothing tickles my fancy more than horror movies about horror movies, and Sony's The Final Girls seems tailor-made for fans like ourselves. A handful of new actors have joined the flick so read on for full details!

THR reports that Thomas Middleditch ("Silicon Valley"), Nina Dobrev (pictured; "The Vampire Diaries"), Adam Devine ("Workaholics"), and Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games) have all signed on for roles in the horror-comedy, joining the previously announced Taissa Farmiga ("American Horror Story") and Malin Akerman (Watchmen).

Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film centers on a girl (Farmiga) who, along with her friends, is mysteriously transported into the world of an iconic ’80s horror flick, which starred her recently deceased mother (Akerman), a famous scream queen. The group must try to survive the movie and defeat its crazed killer.

Middleditch will play a film geek for whom landing in a classic horror flick is a dream come true until it turns into a nightmare. Dobrev will play the alpha ex-best friend. Ludwig will act as Farmiga’s love interest while Devine will be the movie-within-a-movie's appointed teen seducer.

Mark Fortin and Joshua John Miller wrote the script. Michael London and Janice Williams are producing via their Groundswell Productions banner.

Production on the film, which SPWA acquired in February, is taking place in Louisiana.

NOT SAFE FOR WORK: First Look at Zombie Film The Epidemic

NOT SAFE FOR WORK: First Look at Zombie Film The EpidemicKnow what irritates the hell out of us? When people throw white makeup on the faces of their friends, splash them with stage blood, tell them to run really fast, film it, and then call it a zombie movie. So many indie filmmakers have done just that. However, Nigel Hartwell is NOT one of them.

We get sent a lot of indie projects to look at around these parts from filmmakers trying to raise money for their movies. We spare you the majority of them because 95% of them will either never get made, are just plain lazy looking, or don't spark our interest.

After sitting through Hartwell's truly ambitious sales trailer for his film The Epidemic, we've gotta say, "We're sold!" Sure, it's rough around the edges, but the guy has something big and cool in mind. The best part? It's NOT SAFE FOR WORK! That's right, horndogs! Here's your chance to add a bit of boobage to your afternoon!

Hartwell also has a cast in place which includes Danny Trejo (of course), Corey Feldman, Larry Zerner, and more!
