From the Press Release
The first haunting musical notes during the opening credits to the 1978 classic film Halloween literally send chills down your spine. You've just watched a six-year-old Michael Myers murder his sister, and John Carpenter's unsettling piano melody will forever cement the association of our beloved autumn holiday with his inhuman cinematic demon. Few directors can create these lifelong memories for film fans; yet, John Carpenter has done it throughout his career, populating our awareness with his iconic heroes and villains.

From Snake Plisskin's grunted one-liners to Jack Burton's witty braggadocio, we are immersed and invested in these character archetypes. We are there when Christine takes care of the shitters. We are there, watching in terror, when bodies rupture and sprout tendrils in the Antarctic wasteland. We are there when Hot Rod Nada puts on the sunglasses and wakes up to reality. Writer, director, musician... John Carpenter has inspired artists of every discipline. He has taught us about storytelling, how to create suspense visually and aurally, and even about the need for humor.

The influence is evident when you look around Hyaena Gallery and see the art on our walls. The realm of dark and pop art owes a sincere thank you to John Carpenter for stirring our imagination and fears throughout the years. It is an honor, on Hyaena gallery’s eight-year anniversary, to pay tribute to a man who is not only a Master of Horror but in truth a master of craft.

All Out of Bubblegum! A Tribute to John Carpenter contains works by the following artists: Chet Zar, Clint Carney, D.W. Frydendall, James Bonner, Jeff Rebner, Mark Covell, Joe Vaux, Mick Cassidey, Char Hall, Nicolas Caesar, Wyatt Teitzel, The Creep, Lou Rusconi, Megan Kelly, Phil Joyce, Kat Philbin, Big Tasty, Adam Padilla, Donnie Green, Kyle Abernethy, Michael Kelleher, Robert Heckman, Matthew J. Levin, Stanislav, Jeremy Cross, Rannie Rodil, and more.

Tribeca 2014: See the Chupacabra Attack in First Indigenous TrailerChupacabra sightings continue to ran rampant throughout the country, and we suspect the only time anyone's really gonna see one of these beasts (or at least someone dressed as one) is in Indigenous, which will be playing at this year's Tribeca Film Festival!

Check out a few stills and the trailer for Indigenous, which premieres as part of Tribeca's Midnight section. Its screening schedule can be found below the synopsis.

Written by Max Roberts and directed by Alastair Orr, the film stars Zachary Soetenga, Lindsey McKeon, Sofia Pernas, Pierson Fode, Jamie Anderson, and Juanxo Villaverde.

Synopsis
A group of five American friends on the cusp of adulthood travel to Panama to relax and reconnect. They befriend a local woman in their hotel bar, and despite some ominous whispers, she goes against the specific instructions of her brother and takes the Americans on a day trip into the pristine falls at the nearby jungle. What begins as an innocent outing to a picturesque waterfall quickly turns terrifying after she suddenly goes missing. As night closes in, the friends realize too late the truth behind the rumors—the legendary, blood-sucking Chupacabra is now stalking them.

Syfy Greenlights Another New Series: Space Opera The Expanse

    0

Syfy Greenlights Another New Series: Space Opera The ExpanseSyfy continues to ramp up its slate of new scripted dramas with a straight-to-series order for space opera project "The Expanse," based on the book series by James S.A. Corey, it was announced today by Syfy President Dave Howe.

The 10-episode order is Syfy’s boldest new series commitment to date. "The Expanse" is produced by Alcon Television Group (ATG), a division of Alcon Entertainment, and marks the company’s first series order.

"The Expanse" does sound a lot more sci-fi than horror so we probably won't be covering it much more but thought fans of the books would certainly be interested in the news about the series, which follows.

Related Story:Syfy Announces Two New Series: "Z Nation" with Zombies and "Olympus" with Gods and Monsters

Academy Award-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, Iron Man) wrote the pilot and will continue to serve as writers as well as executive producers.

    Synopsis:
A thriller set two hundred years in the future, "The Expanse" follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

Said Howe, “‘The Expanse’ is epic in scale and scope and promises to be Syfy's most ambitious series to date. Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Company is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative, and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories. 'The Expanse' joins a killer line-up of high-concept, high quality series, along with recently announced original projects ‘Ascension,’ ’12 Monkeys,’ the renewal of ‘Helix,’ and the soon to premiere ‘Dominion.'”

ATG President Sharon Hall states, “‘The Expanse’ is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise; and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it. Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey. We are thrilled to be in business with Syfy on this venture.”

Brown and Daniel state: "‘The Expanse’ is one of the most special pieces of material we've ever encountered, and it has been our dream to bring it to life since the moment we read it. We couldn't be more excited to be doing it with this team of all-stars - Mark, Hawk, and our partners at Alcon and Syfy.”

Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will serve as executive producers with Sharon Hall. Alcon Television executive Ben Roberts will serve as co-producer. Ben Cook will serve as producer. Sean Daniel (Graceland, The Mummy) and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company developed the original pitch with Fergus and Ostby and will also executive produce.

Developed with the Sean Daniel Company as a direct-to-series project, Alcon is financing and executive producing the hour-long, ten-episode series based on the popular New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). Abraham and Franck will be show producers.

The multi-installment, best-selling book series is published in 17 countries, including China, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom. Book One in the series, Leviathan Wakes, was nominated for a Hugo Award as well as a Locus Award, while Caliban’s War was nominated for a Locus Award.

As the sole studio, Alcon retains the much-in-demand worldwide distribution rights. Alcon is currently out to cast and directors.

    Captain America Shatters the Oculus

    0
    0

Captain America Shatters the OculusMagic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all? Actually, it was Captain America, followed closely by talking animated birds. The new haunted mirror movie Oculus still managed to score a fair share in its third place opening weekend.

Opinions have been contentious regarding Mike Flanagan’s Oculus but audiences showed up this weekend for the first wide release horror film in about three months. The Blumhouse Productions/WWE Studios co-production got off to a modest start with a $12 million opening. According to Box Office Mojo, that’s about on par with the last haunted mirror flick to hit theaters, Mirrors, which opened to a tad more than $11 million.

Divergent’s fifth place weekend granted another $3.4 million, bringing it to over $125 million domestically. The formula should now be obvious to Hollywood producers looking to adapt female-centric genre novels to films: dystopian future romances, yay; supernatural romance, nay. Twilight time has passed and we are now basking in the dawn of Hunger Games-inspired tweenertainment.

The next big screen installment in the Divergent franchise is already set to roll and it was announced this past week that the final book in the series will be, for absolutely no justifiable reason other than to maximize profits, divided into two films. In retrospect, it’s rather amazing that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy didn’t end up as six films.

Next week, A Haunted House 2 tries to justify its existence while Johnny Depp threatens our existence by turning into the Lawnmower Man in Transcendence and Disneynature’s Bears celebrates Earth Day by showcasing the “giant, marauding, godless killing machines” that haunt Stephen Colbert’s nightmares.

Set Visit Coverage: Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes Talk Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs

    0
    0

Set Visit Coverage: Tom Woodruff Jr. Talks Fire City: The Interpreter of SignsWe were lucky enough to get to play with demons on the set of Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs earlier this month while the complex “horror noir,” which is the brainchild of writer-producers Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes, was shooting.

It’s directed by F/X master Tom Woodruff, Jr., and stars Tobias Jelinek as Vine the Demon, who must square off with an even eviler Demoness, Cornelia (played by Danielle "Dani" Chuchran).

We had a chance to talk with the actors plus the director and his two right-hand practical effects guys (his son, David Woodruff, and Academy Award winner Dave Elsey), but in this installment you'll hear from the originators of Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs, Lubocki and Hayes.

Dread Central: So… what’s the Fire City story in this film? It's based on your body of shorts and other works set in this world, correct?

Brian Lubocki: I’ll let Michael take the story question, but I’ll preface it by saying Fire City is a world where demons live among us, only we can’t see them for who they truly are.

Michael Hayes: Um, this particular story is about a hallway where demons and humans live together. Demons need misery to survive; it’s the only thing that they need. They eat like normal people but only do that because they like it. They don’t need it but they need human misery so we have a character who is essentially procuring misery for them. He is a demon who is a drug dealer to humans and also a misery dealer to the demons. He lives at the end of the hall, and every night creative misery comes to the end of the hall.

BL: So it’s a bit of an eco system…

MH: What happens is this eco system is thrown out of whack; the humans suddenly reform themselves. Nobody comes to his door anymore. All the humans on the floor who previously were despicable - wife beaters, child molesters - are now model boyfriends, parents, girlfriends. So, the demons begin to starve, and they are trying to figure out what has caused this to happen as they are starting to die.

BL: It's as if all their transgressions have been wiped clean.

DC: Now, how did this happen?

BL: Well that’s what the movie is about…

    (Laughter)

BL: And also important to distinguish is that it is very specifically not a Judeo-Christian story. This is not angels versus demons, heaven versus hell. This is closer to maybe Lord of the Rings and Constantine. Demons live here just like we do; they don’t know anything more than we do. How they got here? They've got their own philosophies and religions just like we do, but no one really knows.

DC: Why do you call them demons?

MH: They actually call themselves that; again, we are not Judeo-Christian but... drawing from all sorts of different mythologies.

DC: But are they damned souls? They’re not really dead, right? Are they mortal or not?

MH: That gets into part of the underlying mythology of our world, which is actually part of the reveals that we present in later films. So this is the first film of four films actually.

BL: For the time being I will only say that they... they experience the mythologies and the stories and, you know, what’s on TV just like we do. So they most closely compare themselves or see themselves similar to what the Hollywood version of demons are. They essentially... even though some look more like... we've got one that looks more like a Borg, call a Borgling Demon. And some that look like an animal world. There’s also some that have other chemical properties. Some have metal in their structure. So there really are differences [between] them...

BL: Yeah, but it really comes from a really pure material, sort of evolution, as if evolution took a fork on the road. I would say that he most closely relates to some of the demons that he’s seen on TV and books more than anything else.

DC: So what made you decide to make a movie? It’s such a huge undertaking. This is something where you’re really taking a leap but it’s a great risk. What was the one catalyst that made you both say, “Okay, this is a movie that we are going to make.” Or I guess four movies!

MH: I’m not sure there was one catalyst as much as it was... we've been friends for a number of years and writers [but] have never written together. We finally sort of sat down and said, 'You know, we want to make something that we've written. We want to see our writing executed.' And so we thought, 'Let’s just do a web series.''All right, so what do you like, and what do I like?'

And we came up with a mix of sort of horror, noir, thriller, those kinds of things. And the moment that we came up with that core idea of what if demons live among us and human see them as other humans, not because they’re cloaking themselves but because that’s just the nature of the world... demons that can’t be seen as anything else other than human. Sort of the same way humans can see a certain spectrum of light. We can’t see infrared light, we can’t see ultraviolet, we only see a certain spectrum. It’s the same; it’s more of a scientific property.

So when we came up with that and started to build it out, we realized that it was a much larger story world that could become a feature film. It was really a franchisable idea, kind of an endless story generator as we started to build out the rules of the world. And when we realized that, we thought... rather than just try a webseries, it would really best be served by what everyone else would do with it if they had all the money in the world, which is make a feature film franchise.

DC: Well, I’m going to give you my personal opinion here and just give you a little back story to my question. It is that special effects guys, I find, do not make the best directors. I think Tom Savini movies are not great. I didn’t like Stan Winston's movie about the werewolves; it was laughably bad. I can understand why you would obviously want Tom Woodruff to do this because he knows so much about practical effects and he brings so much to that point of view… but what is it about him as a director that makes you guys think that he’s the best person to tell your story?

BL: One of the things that Tom has beyond just making features is actually performing in features. So he has an extra special piece where he knows from day one how grueling it is. And not only is he performing but performing in a suit... We did a short film with him and saw him in action, and now this is just him times ten. He really knows the beats and really is concerned with the actors and honestly more so than where the camera is as much as are we getting those emotional moments, and every actor has come up to us and said that he really works; it’s really special.

    DC: That’s a good point.

MH: And I was also just in conversation with him and talking about what he would do. We have had other directors direct Fire City in pieces but with Tom we thought that because he brings ADI [Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., Woodruff's special effects company], that it would be just a good fit, if in fact we felt that he was capable of executing the world. The more we talked to him, the more he seemed very aligned with the way we looked at the world. It seemed like a natural fit. So what we wanted to do was sort of see what it was like so we made a short film. Just to kind of see where things were, and it went really, really well. We were probably the weakest links on that.

    (Laughter)

MH: We hadn’t shot for a couple of years, so you know, there was all sorts of things that we had to kind of get back up-to-speed on, remember from our last shoot, but it was just a fantastic process and Tom did such a great job... and just full speed ahead; let’s get it done.

DC: My next question is about your cast and how you chose who would play these characters because there was so much to them as far as the look. Yes, you may look great in makeup, but can you do the dialogue of the scenes, can you show the emotions? What was the process in casting Tobias and Dani?

BL: We had a lot of casting. We saw no less than I think 80 leading actors who came through. And it was just all about the performance, the benefit of doing it this way, and with this low budget we really weren't bound by any sort of distributor [like], 'You've got to have this name or this sort of person in it.' We did go through [that] over the last couple of years as we were trying to put something together and just all those obstacles to things that would ultimately cut into our creativity. So really we just went for broke as much as we could... and just found the best talent.

MH: And also part of it was that we wanted to make sure that we would be a movie that we could sell. As much as everybody wants 'names,' we have monsters, and so we talked to a lot of sales agents. We talked to a lot of people in the distribution world, and while of course they all want big names...

DC: Yeah, who’s going to be on the front of the DVD box, the Blu-ray....

MH: I went and showed them the poster with just monsters on it and just said, 'Can you sell this, or do you need a name on there?' And they said, 'I'd like a name on there, but if there’s no name on there, I can sell that.' So that really sort of underscored for us that the strategy at this level was to really go for performance... It’s just very difficult when you’re not able to audition actors. You have references to people's work or what they do, but you really don't know what someone is going to do with the character that you’ve written until you actually see them do it. And that’s the danger of going after names cause, you know, we’re nobodies so they’re not going to read for us. And so it’s kind of hit or miss; maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t. Maybe they’ll be great in the role, but put them with another actor who’s great in their role and the chemistry doesn’t work. It was really a great thing for us to be able to not read names alone, just work on performance, and we got great, great actors.

DC: What was it about Tobias specifically that made you think he is your Vine? Now you know he is for sure, having worked with him. But what kind of an early promise did he show, and what’s he done that made the character even more so?

BL: Well, for me it was the final audition; we narrowed it down to three, and really there were two who were really strong, and he just... he left it all in that audition. Every emotion. I mean, he brought it. He did not hold anything back. Just that kind of performance. We knew if he can do that in an audition, well, what can he do when he really had time to work it out?!?

DC: And how’s he helped the character evolve into something that’s maybe a little bit different, that’s his own now?

MH: He’s definitely become Vine, you know... [when] we’re in a scene, he will say, 'You know, I wonder if he would say this instead of this.' I’m like,' Yes absolutely; you tell me - you’re Vine at this point so…'

BL: Yeah, and you know someone in makeup who is the hero, it’s hard to care about that person. Hellboy comes to mind, but I can’t think of very many movies where... you’re compassionate to them. And if you don’t care for him, that’s the whole film - you're lost. So he really brings an element to it. Everybody on the crew has said, 'I can’t wait to see him come back. Is he coming back in the sequel? I love him so much.' That’s not easy to do. Two hours of makeup a day and contacts and prosthetic teeth, but even the teeth... that’s funny... all the actors had issues with these giant teeth pushing up into your gums and at times you get a lisp. He’s created a really kind of articulation to get around those teeth that has become the staple of how he speaks and his mannerism.

DC: Now nobody else can play the role… Smart actor!

    BL: That’s right, that’s right.

    MH: Absolutely…

BL: And we start thinking in the demon world, just like us, if you whatever you’re born with, you find a way to live in the world with it. You know if you have a handicap or whatever... So someone dealing with giant pointy teeth would have to learn to not cut his own lips when he talked…

MH: For me Tobias was the choic because he understood not just the character but understood the world and he understood the journey that this character was going on. And he understood it in the scene that he read, better then really anybody else. And what was really most interesting to us is who he was off book and who he wasn’t. But it didn’t matter at all... because he knew the scene and he knew the character and he knew where the character was in that scene better than anyone else. And it wasn’t as much about the specifics words as it was about that for me. And when I saw that, I thought that he could definitely inhabit this character and just kind run with it, and he has.

DC: Yeah, you’re putting him through a lot.

BL: Absolutely… He loves it; he’s game.

MH: This is day 16 of 15 out of 18 makeup days…

    DC: Wow.

BL: Long days, 12 hour days, 6 days a week. He’s a machine; he’s the biggest [champ].

DC: I want to talk a little bit about your embracing of the social media aspect of this. I like the fact that you’re letting fans have access to this and you're encouraging crew to tweet and you even have a sign that says #FireCity. Was that a conscious decision, or are you like, 'Well, social media is out there; I guess we just can’t fight it.' Talk a little bit about the rationale behind your accessibility.

BL: Before I answer that, in case we don’t get back to it, I also want to say we put all the actors through all sorts of hell, makeup, etc., and we had similar stories with Danielle Chuchran, with Keely Alona, with Kristin Minter, the whole cast - even when those that weren’t demons are acting demonic. All the humans actually have two roles because they have to be… the most despicable and also the most moral at the same time.

DC: Yeah, they've really got to go from one side of the coin to the other, huh?

    BL: Without a doubt.

MH: But to answer that question, social media is just essential for any film really, and for us it’s about awareness. We don’t come from a book series. We don’t have a big studio behind us. We’re an independent feature film genre franchise. What do we do with that? We decided that we’re just going to show everything. I mean, we’re not showing video yet, but we want people to find us. We don’t want to be mysterious or secret; we’ll do that later, once we have an audience, but for now it’s really about finding that audience and getting that audience to find us.

BL: And there’s also something really special about letting people in early. [We're] fans ourselves of certain series. As a fan you’re always writing part of the story yourself, and sometimes you think, 'I wish it would have gone this way instead of that way,' and even our sound guy today was talking about that and talking about our world. And at one point we said, 'What would this character wear in this scene, this is an important scene, what do you think as a fan?' And it’s just great to have that. You can see what works and what doesn’t work and you see what people react to and maybe you do focus a little more specifically on it. We did a Kickstarter campaign, and one of the things we did, which was fantastic, is have a contest. The best demon gets to be in our film.

Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs centers around a fragile balance that exists between humankind and the demons who secretly live among them and the crisis for all when this balance is broken.

Harry Shum, Jr., plays an abusive alcoholic boyfriend who suddenly transforms into a caring and loving person, along with the rest of the humans in his seedy tenement building. Dependent on human misery for survival, the demons in the building begin to starve.

Writer-producers Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign for the film in August 2013. For more info visit the official Fire City website, "like"Fire City on Facebook, and follow Fire City on Twitter (@interpreterfilm).

CBS's Extant Adds Grey's Anatomy Alum Tessa Ferrer in Recurring RoleMichael O'Neill, who's been so chillingly great during this season of "Bates Motel," is next going to be seen on CBS in "Extant," and the part of his character's daughter will be played by soon-to-be ex-"Grey's Anatomy" co-star Tessa Ferrer.

Per TV Guide, Ferrer (who is singer Debby Boone's daughter and also related to actors José, Miguel, and Rafael Ferrer) will recur as Katie Sparks, an over-achieving astronaut and the offspring of O'Neill's Alan Sparks, who serves as the director of the ISEA.

Ferrer (pictured) currently plays Leah Murphy on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" but won't be returning next season so the timing couldn't be better for her transition from scrubs to spacesuit.

"Extant" premieres on Wednesday, July 9th, at 9/8c on CBS.

    Synopsis:
"EXTANT" is a mystery thriller about a female astronaut, Molly (Halle Berry), who is trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.

Goran Visnjic portrays John, Molly's husband; Pierce Gagnon plays their son, Ethan; Louis Gossett, Jr., plays Quinn, Molly's father; and Camryn Manheim plays Sam Barton, Molly’s best friend. Michael O'Neill and Grace Gummer also co-star. Guest stars include Josh Malina as Dr. Scott Beck, the lead doctor in an emergency room of the near future.

"Extant" is a co-production of CBS Television Studios and Amblin Television. Steven Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Fisher, who wrote the script, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey, and Darryl Frank serve as executive producers. Halle Berry serves as co-executive producer.

The Blood Stream: The Devil's Gravestone

    0
    0

The Blood Stream: The Devil's GravestoneWelcome to the first ever Blood Stream and my first post on Dread Central! Truly, it is a momentous occasion. For all of us. Have you ever found yourself with nothing to watch, hopelessly scanning Netflix or Hulu for something, ANYTHING you haven’t seen?

You’ve used up all the well known horror and most of the not-so-well known. So you delve into the lower reaches of your streaming site of choice. Two-star movies. One-and-a-half-star movies. Movies with such poorly composited cover art you dare not read the synopses for fear of what lies within.

While some of these bottom dwellers might be more or less tolerable, you can't know for sure without watching. More than likely, you’ll waste half an hour on a randomly selected title before you realize you would have been better off chewing glass and punching yourself in the face.

The purpose of this column is to mine the internet for horror gold so you don’t have to. In this space you’ll find (legally) streamable horror titles that have thus far escaped the withering gaze of Dread Central’s all-seeing eye. Every now and then I’ll dredge up something of higher-than-expected quality and we can all rejoice, if only for a moment. Most weeks I suspect I’ll sit through 90+ minutes of breathtakingly bad cinema. Enjoy my torment!

For the first edition I was hoping I’d get lucky and nab something good. Then you’d be all, “Hey, this guy really provided me a service. He sure is neat. I will tell all my friends and post a humorous .gif in the comments.” Alas, I landed on what is quite literally an amateur attempt at vampire action-horror:

The Devil’s Gravestone (Add it to your queue)

The Devil’s Gravestone tells the tale of Jaq (short for Jacqueline, which, um, okay), an ass-kicking, mega-babe 20-something who four years ago lost her six-year-old son. The math on that isn’t impossible, but at the very least it’s a cautionary tale about the importance of sex education.

And how did she lose said son? Her husband became a vampire and ATE HIM. Holy crap! That is some intense stuff right there, daring even. It's especially cool that, as a result, the big bad she’s chasing (her hubbie) has only been a vampire for four years. That’s a far cry from the usual thousand-year-old super villain at the end of most vampire yarns. This guy is young, but he's a climber.

Before I get into details on why this is such a horrible movie and you should never waste your time on it, not even on a bet or to get your writing on a website you like, let me first say: I respect the hell out of everybody involved in this movie. I’m not kidding.

This entire 95-minute feature was financed, produced and in all ways staffed by about three people and their families. That’s some achievement, regardless of how imperfect the finished product is. And this one is at least structurally sound, boasting a story that, while convoluted, nevertheless manages to build to an appropriate, satisfying finish.

That being said, here are the reasons this movie is terrible and should never be watched by anyone who does not care deeply about someone in the cast or crew:

    1. Atrocious video quality. Hard to say if they filmed this on an old cell phone or it just looks that way. Most movies are captured on digital rather than film nowadays. This one was made in 2009 but it looks like 1990s videotape with software filters and fake celluloid artifacts added haphazardly to inflict maximum eyeball carnage. The resolution of the Netflix transfer is MAYBE good enough for an iPad but nothing larger. On a full size TV it looks like someone coated the screen with Vaseline.

    2. Missing Foley and terrible vocal sync. Spaghetti westerns are universally beloved despite the fact that characters' voices never match their lips. I can look past bad audio. But some scenes in Devil's Gravestone– both dialogue and action – are almost completely inaudible. Either a mic was too far away or the wind was too high, or they just ran out of time to add effects. Whatever the case, it rips you out of the world of the film every time.

    3. Massive editing, continuity and/or logic issues. Just an example: There’s a fight scene in which our heroine is stabbed in the gut. It's bad but she’s not so injured she can’t capture the vampire she’s fighting and perform a leisurely seduction/torture thing on him. Immediately after that, she goes out into the alley and collapses from her wounds. To recover, she goes home and slams a bunch of smack into her arm before hopping into the bathtub, hanging a homemade IV bag above her head and taping a pen to her hand. After a few minutes of that, she's ready to fight again. Only this time she suffers a gunshot wound to the torso and literally walks it off. If you think her inexplicable rapid healing might be leading to a big twist, well....the twist is on you, my friend.

It’s easy to pan a neighborhood film with a tiny budget. But lest we forget, Evil Dead had almost no budget and it still holds up as a ripping good time. El Mariachi was filmed for like 64 pesos. And it's not like there was no money behind Devil’s Gravestone. For one thing, the cast isn't some local improv troupe. Many of them were paid professionals.

You know the lead, Elle LaMont, and her agent were getting professional rates for the two or so weeks she was on set. For a runway model, LaMont isn’t a terrible actor and she's reasonably committed. Still, her relentless, droning voiceovers could be cut without losing anything important. Her hugely padded, perpetually tank-topped boobs are a little distracting as well, though I'm sure that wasn't her call.

Joe Nemmers, who plays Detective Dick (not making that up), isn't half bad either. He’s dashing and brawny and he delivers his lines with legit gravitas. His IMDB page lists a string of minor credits and he does a bunch of theater work. He’s not taking Hollywood by storm but he's a decent, full-time actor who certainly commands SAG rates. And many of the film's other actors probably do too, which goes to show that this movie's failings are not so much due to a lack of production dollars as they are a lack of filmmaking expertise.

You'd find The Devil’s Gravestone super impressive if someone you knew worked on it. It is not, however, a movie you should watch otherwise. Instead, why not flip on good old Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter? It, too, is an inconsistent vampire slayer story. It's nowhere near the top of the vampire movie food chain, but it is readily available to stream on Netflix. While it lacks some of the novice clumsiness of The Devil’s Gravestone, it’s still plenty weird and just as often makes little to no sense.
