Barbara Steele, Jonathan Zarantonello, and James Karen Talk The Butterfly Room

$

Barbara Steele, Jonathan Zarantonello, and James Karen Talk The Butterfly RoomI heard about The Butterfly Room– an American suspense thriller with an Italian sensibility, starring the British-born Barbara Steele – almost a year ago, and I’ve been waiting ever since on the proverbial pins and needles to see it.

Well, I got plenty of pins and needles in the squirm-inducing scenes involving the pinning of butterflies to specimen boards! Be sure to read my The Butterfly Room review for the details!

In a nutshell, it was well worth the wait.

I figured I’d be lucky to catch a streaming link somehow, never dreaming I’d actually get a personal invite from the film’s director to see it in a historical indie movie theater just down the street from my house – and what’s more, the regal Ms. Steele was in attendance!

She took part in a Q&A along with screen legend James Karen (who’s only in the movie for a couple of minutes, but he’s a joy to see). In spite of some serious spotlight-hogging from a long-winded, self-serving moderator (nope, not Elvis Mitchell – but almost as overstated!), we did manage to hear a few words from director Jonathan Zarantonello and his illustrious cast members.

Proceed with caution... spoilers lie in wait.

Jonathan Zarantonello: Well, the idea [for the movie] was to portray a mother and to make it as universal as possible. For example, there is a line in the movie that says, ‘It was so much better when you were younger; you were so much cuter when you were a kid.” And this is a line that Barbara says and that all the ladies in the movie say. So the idea was to portray, definitely, a killer as an unusual character but with some traits that may be common to mothers in general. And, as a matter of fact, at the end, when there’s the close-up with Heather and her daughter, yeah, of course she may have inherited something from her mother. She says the same line even when she touches the hair of her son, Matthew, 'You were so much cuter when you were younger.' So, once again, the same line... I was hoping that they would show us that motherhood sometimes cannot be that sweet and kind thing that we’re all used to, especially in the movies.

What I like to see in horror movies is the everyday life turned into something dark. Especially figures like little kids, beautiful children… and eerily gentle women who are portrayed in movies as victims or just as innocent people who will seem then as being evil. And Alice, I guess, is even more evil than Ann. She is manipulative and takes advantage of lonely ladies. So I wanted to show an evil side of something that usually is beautiful, and maybe that’s what butterflies are. Butterflies are usually a symbol of something that’s beautifulm and instead here it’s a symbol of death.

Barbara Steele: I think that all horror should be made in black and white. I think, essentially, that the psyche is actually more acute and more personal and more intense when things are black and white. Because I have a nostalgia for all those great film noirs as well from the Forties, etc., and the silence in them and the darkness. As far as I’m concerned, the films of today are just too hyper-lit and everything is just too excruciating and so you don’t have to reach into anything. It’s all thrown in your face like acid. But working with Jonathan was a very civilized experience because he’s very civilized. I think that Jonathan made a very quirky, clever, original film.

JZ: Once Barbara decided to make the movie, [she] basically made my life much happier because, I mean, I’ve seen her when I was growing up. I saw her movies, and being able to have her in the movie and being able to see her on set saying lines that I’ve written has been a tremendous privilege.

James Karen: The most important thing is, all we’ve got left today are our performances because the enhancement and all the machinery, that’s not what counts. What counts is what the director can give to the actor to produce something wonderful that’s on the screen. And I just spent three days at the Turner Classic movie festival; we’ve seen an awful lot of pictures, and really, it’s all in the performances and not in the mise-en-scène, and what we saw tonight was the performance of a great actress and nothing else counts.

JZ: The idea was more general to show that even the lady who solved the problem of the movie basically, killing the killer, may become a killer herself. Not particularly because she was her daughter but just because sometimes, when you were a kid it was much easier, those lies reveal some madness that could be in everybody.

I grew up with [Dario] Argento’s movies. All the details when she cuts the butterfly and then she cuts the fabric in her butterfly room, those are somehow Argento homages. Of course he’s been so inspirational for generations of directors in Italy. Growing up and watching all those movies, even if you don’t want to, you make references because they are so much inside of us.

You'll find full screening information over on The Butterfly Room's official website!

Also starring are P.J. Soles, Adrienne King, Erica Leerhsen, and Camille Keaton.

Synopsis
Ann, a reclusive, elegant lady with an obsession for butterflies, is surprisingly befriended by the eerily beautiful young Alice. Using her seductive innocence, Alice establishes a disturbing mother-daughter relationship with Ann. Lured into her twisted world, Ann soon discovers that she is not the only recipient of the girl's affections.

Confronted by Alice's other lady friends, Ann's shock awakens a dark, hidden past, unchaining a spiral of madness: a series of brutal and bizarre crimes that Ann will have to commit to preserve her harmless and deceptive appearances. The only one who recognizes there's something unsettling about Ann is nine-year-old Julie, her next-door neighbor's daughter.

With the inevitable curiosity of a child, Julie begins to explore the corners of Ann's apartment, discovering a dark secret hidden in the walls of the forbidden butterfly room. No one believes what she's seen except for Ann's estranged daughter, Dorothy. Horrified, she realizes that the fate of the young girl lies in her hands. To save both Julie and herself, she must summon up the courage to confront an evil that has haunted her for years.

With special effects created by Academy Award winning AFX Studio and elegant and refined visuals, in contrast with the sickness of the story, The Butterfly Room is an all-female story, an American thriller with a European soul.

Exclusive: Adam Gierasch Talks Fractured

$

Exclusive: Adam Gierasch Talks FracturedYou’ve got to love the fact that the press junket for Adam Gierasch’s latest extreme horror film was held in a bar – in the middle of the day. (Not only was press allowed to imbibe, the open tab certainly was encouraging of vice.)

As the jukebox played and the fermented juices flowed, I sat down with Gierasch and company to ask a few questions about Fractured (formerly, Schism).

The movie’s main male stars – Callum Blue and Vinnie Jones – were not able to attend the event, but that’s okay... we had the lovely and talented actresses, Nicole LaLiberte and Ashlynn Yennie, to chat up.

LaLiberte plays wild sex kitten Marlena, while Yennie takes on the tamer (though no less-clothed) character of Brandy. It’s interesting to think that maybe the roles would have been reversed. “I got the script and there were two female characters. One was Marlena and the other was Brandy. I initially auditioned for Brandy,” LaLiberte told me. “Marlena’s character seemed a lot more dynamic,” she added.

Yennie was glad to leave the "dynamics" to someone else. In the film she plays the sweet and innocent girlfriend to Blue’s demon-cursed character. “I really wanted to do this film, especially since Human Centipede was so extreme,” she revealed. “It was crazy when I first saw the movie because I didn’t work with Nicole or Vinnie and didn’t see any dark parts of the film [when shooting]. My character Brandy has the only ‘normal’ role in the film,” she laughed.

After speaking with the ladies, we got down to the nuts and bolts with co-writer and director Gierasch.

Dread Central: You are working with the lovely Ashlynn Yennie in this film, and you have some other great actresses and actors... Were these pulled from your pool of friends that you've known for years?

Adam Gierasch: No, not at all! I saw Ashlynn on television one night, and the next day I went to the casting directors and asked, “Can we call her in? Would she come and read?” And so she came in, auditioned, and got the part just like anybody normally would.

DC: Wow! So also, she's nude – I’m mean, totally. There's actually a lot of nakedness in this film.

AG: (Laughs) Yes, I tried to be fair about it.

DC: Yes, you did! Callum Blue is also nude in this film. Did you have any trouble with the actors [and on-screen nudity]?

AG: No. Not at all.

DC: Really, they were all okaywith it?

AG: Absolutely, 100%.

DC: All right, what's your trick- how do you get them to take their clothes off?

AG: You tell them beforehand they're going to. And that was the thing, I needed people who were going to be willing to do that because it has to do with Callum's character - in the first scene with Ashlynn he's very much an innocent, and so I wanted them to be having this very innocent, very vanilla sex, and that was very important. Then with Nicole later on.... it's defiantly NOT vanilla. I wanted to be able to show that and show different kinds of sex that you would have under different emotional circumstances.

DC: When you write screenplays like this with your wife (Jace Anderson), does that help you with these sex scenes?

AG: Oh, no, we fight about it! I'm always dirtier, and she says, “No, no, no!” Originally there was one scene in this... there was a visual effect that I wound up cutting before we shot... there was a line in the script where I said “Jace, you have to write 'vaginal lips part,'” she said, “NO! Absolutely not!” It's not in the script, she vetoed it. In [writing] the scene that involves Nicole, it was difficult; she's always more conservative than I am - she wanted to write it tastefully.

DC: Well, there's a balance.

AG: There is, but I know that I’m going to shoot it. It's not distasteful, but I want it to be rough, you know?

DC: I also think that nudity like that is required in this film because it shows vulnerability that is also subliminal. Plus, if they had their bras on or something, it wouldn't work, right?

AG: Yes, and it's also just not honest. That's just – no one leaves their bra on when they're having sex. I mean, maybe somebody does, but... you see it all the time in movies! As soon as that happens (shakes head) it feels bad, like the filmmakers aren't being truthful. In this I wanted to show sexuality - really the characters' sexuality - for what it was and sort of a variety of different things.

DC: This movie was originally called “Schism,” which may be a more apropos title, but why did it change?

AG: Ah, the dreaded question. It was the foreign sales company. I was just very grateful that I got to keep the movie intact and didn't have to cut anything out. Really, I felt like, it's just a title - as long as the content is in there, I will live with it.

DC: How did you come up with this story? I feel like it's horror noir, but it's also very psychological too.

AG: Jace and I were going to go visit her parents, and I did everything I could to make sure Jace did not get on the plane; so we did not go see her parents. I felt very guilty, and I thought to myself, “Am I damned? I tricked my wife, that's horrible! How can I be 'that guy' who did that?” I just started thinking about damnation, damnation, damnation; and all of the sudden this idea popped in my head for this film. Although our character's sin in this story is MUCH worse than telling your wife, “Now, please don't get on a plane; we're having car trouble!”

DC: Callum Blue, whom I've always loved from "Dead Like Me," is great in this movie. How did he first become involved?

AG: He was with my agency; they sent over his reel, and after I watched it, I invited him to the house. He made fun of my giant skull collection.

DC: He didn't see the naked cowboy picture, did he? [an infamous oil-on-velvet painting owned by Mike Mendez, which is on display at every Gierasch / Anderson house-party.]

AG: Yes, he did.

DC: And he still did the movie? Wow! (laughter)

AG: Yes, I think I showed it to him, and he was laughing, like, “This isn't going to dispel the gay rumors!” He's not at all gay.

DC: Ultimately, what do you hope horror fans will take away from Fractured? What do you have to say for those who haven't seen it yet?

AG: Please see it. It's not like most horror films. In every other movie I've done, some people go to a house, a hospital, a mansion, and get chased around by ‘Something Bad’. This movie, it's got a very different plot structure, much more like an old detective movie. I wanted to do that and mix in noir with surrealism. I feel like it's really something different, and I hope people dig it. This is the first movie I've made where I feel like it's “Me”; whereas, I felt like many of the others were just a hollow shadow of who I am as a person.

DC: Interesting you say that because I do feel like this is your most mature, fully-realized work to date, and it can only get better from here, right?

AG: (laughs) Your lips to God's ears!

Synopsis
Fractured tells the story of Dylan White. After awaking from a coma with no idea who he is, Dylan creates a safe and and normal life for himself. It doesn’t last long as horrifying visions start to interrupt his waking moments. Following clues that take him to the dark and blood-splattered underbelly of New Orleans, Dylan meets his arch nemesis, Quincy (Vinnie Jones), and soon finds that both his life and soul are in danger. FRACTURED is a trip to the dark side, noir-style: bad men, bad dames, bad sex, and bad intentions.

New Daylight Videos Highlight Terrors in the DarkAs we near the PC and PlayStation 4 April 29th release date for the new horror game from Zombie Studios & Atlus, entitled Daylight, the powers-that-be have released two new videos to fuel our nightmares. Check 'em out!

Only the bravest souls will find all the messages and clues scattered through Daylight's labyrinthine twists of derelict hospital corridors and other creepy environments, where procedurally generated levels ensure no two playthroughs will be the same.

Daylight is told in the first-person perspective and begins with players regaining consciousness in an abandoned hospital with only a cell phone to use as a source of light. The ominous atmosphere, powered by Unreal Engine 4, gives players the immediate feeling that they need to escape. But since each level is procedurally generated, no clues, haunted corridors, life-saving flares or lurking specter will ever be in the same place twice.

Daylight was written by industry veteran Jessica Chobot, who also provides the quavering, terrified voice of the protagonist.

For the PlayStation 4 system, Daylight will take full advantage of the console's features, including:

  • Using every ounce of processing power: Daylight uses Unreal Engine 4 to create an atmospheric setting with some of the most immersive graphics to date.
  • Share gameplay online: Scare friends with the system's new "share" feature to stream gameplay to friends.
  • Capturing the moment: Daylight uses the PS4 system's integrated PlayStation Eye camera to take pictures of the exact moment that a scare happens. Keep the pictures of the reactions as a novelty or bravely share them with friends on social networks.
  • RealD 3D Support: Daylight uses the latest 3D technology from RealD to expand its haunting atmosphere into the third dimension.
