Mexico Gets Darker Than The Night in 3DMore Mexican horror is on the menu with the 3D release of Mas Negro Que La Noche, or, as it will be known here in the States, Darker Than The Night. We have details, a ton of images, and some artwork for ya! Check it all out!

From the Press Release
Mexico’s Filmadora Nacional, Celeste Films, and Itaca have teamed with Spain’s Neo Art to produce Mas Negro Que La Noche (Darker Than the Night), a remake of a 1975 shock-fest classic that will be Mexico’s initial live-action stereoscopic 3D movie.

A remake of Mexican fear director Carlos Enrique Taboada’s shock-fest of a same title, now considered a classic, Night has the makings to be one of Mexico’s largest releases of 2014.

It keeps the simple set-up of the 1975 classic: When four women move into an old house left by one woman's aunt, strange things begin to happen. Bizarre voices, visions of ghosts, and mysterious noises lead them to discover the darkest powers of evil and a horror and agony beyond terror.

Along with a soon-to-be-attached sales agent, Neo Art owner Antonia Nava and Latam Distribucion’s Eduardo Caso will deliver a 3D demo to buyers during May’s Cannes Market.

A late August/early September release date is anticipated.

Dog Soldiers Blu-ray Release DelayedIf you're eagerly awaiting the Blu-ray release of Dog Soldiers, we have some crappy news for you that has come via the Scream Factory Facebook page. The release has been delayed until 2015.

"Sorry guys but there's been a change of plans for our upcoming Collector's Edition release of DOG SOLDIERS that we need to make you aware of... Due to unforeseen issues on clear ownership of the rights, we are forced to move the title off of its planned August 26th release."

"Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to work out a solution to bring this back into our scary fold, but as of now, the street date is undetermined and there is a strong possibility of it moving to early 2015. As always, we will keep you guys posted on any developments. Our apologies again."

What's with werewolf properties with rights issues? I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the whole "Werewolf: The Series" debacle. Oh, well. I'm sure our patience while they get this all straightened out will be rewarded - as always - tenfold.

For more in the meantime, visit the official Scream Factory website, and "like"Scream Factory on Facebook.

New Artwork for From Dusk Till Dawn Asks: What Would You Do for Santanico Pandemonium? We still have another week to wait for the return of "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" to El Rey's Tuesday night lineup, but to keep you busy, a new promo campaign has begun that asks: What would you do for Santanico Pandemonium?

El Rey Network's new multi-platform promotional initiative is titled "Slaves for Santánico," and it was designed to drive fan engagement and sampling for El Rey Network's first original scripted series, "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series."

The innovative marketing program, which runs April 21st through May 21st, is timed to support the airing of the series' final four episodes, beginning with Episode 1.07, "Pandemonium" (airing April 29th), which features Eiza Gonzalez as Santánico Pandemonium. Credited for launching actress Salma Hayek's career, the Santánico character has been etched into the memory of fans around the globe, and in Episode 1.07, Gonzalez will reenact the iconic snake dance from the cult classic film (which features special makeup effects by "The Walking Dead's" award-winning makeup guru, Greg Nicotero, who oversees makeup effects for the El Rey Network series).

The Santánico party line (1-800-315-2744) will lure callers into a highly responsive two- to three-minute conversation wherein Santánico herself seduces them into answering the question, "What would you do for Santánico Pandemonium?" The personal experience will vary based on caller responses, making for an unforgettable and unduplicated encounter for users.

The campaign, conceived by Campfire, part of SapientNitro, with media planning by Media Storm and technology provided by Dinah Moe, will allow El Rey Network to capture participant responses. The most creative answers will be recreated as visual postcards and posted on a customized TUMBLR page, hosted on SlavesForSantánico.com, and shared via El Rey Network's extensive social platforms. As a parting gift to her most devoted "worshipers," Santánico will provide a passcode where fans can log on to SlavesForSantánico.com and collect exclusive "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" digital goods.

The full brand experience will target consumers through advertising on three platforms including mobile, radio, and out-of-home. Santánico Party Line branded voice-activated urinal cakes and burlesque-style posters will be distributed in designated bars throughout New York and Los Angeles. Mobile ads will be activated to simulate incoming calls from Santánico, and targeted radio spots featuring Santánico and Carlos Madrigal (portrayed in the series by Wilmer Valderrama) will tempt fans to dial in and become "Slaves for Santánico."

Chad Blankenship, El Rey Network's Vice President, Consumer Marketing & Communications, said: "From Dusk Till Dawn's iconic characters are the perfect jumping off point for this innovative, multi-platform initiative. The party line and creative campaign activations leverage Santánico Pandemonium's enormous popularity and invite fans to participate more deeply in the series narrative. The concept is sure to entice new viewers and appeal to the highly coveted demo of men 18-49, including the all-important millennial fan base."

Jake Busey Talks From Dusk Till Dawn, How Mayan Gods & Robert Rodriguez Saved Him, Snake People, and More

Jake Busey Talks From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, How Robert Rodriguez and Mayan Gods Saved Him, Snake People, and Lots MoreRobert Rodriguez's El Rey Network is the Tuesday night home of "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series," and among its stars is Jake Busey as Professor Tanner. Busey recently sat down with Dread Central to dish some info on the show.

"FDTD" is taking tonight off so we thought what better time to catch our breath and chat with Busey about how he became involved with the series, how it compares to the movie on which it's based, what exactly the creatures in it are, and much more.

Busey opened by saying how thrilled he was that Rodriguez hired him for the role of Professor Tanner.

"I feel like I hit the lottery," Busey said. "Robert Rodriguez is the lifesaver of the Jake Busey career. I had some downtime. I had a couple years of complacency. If you're not on the gas, if you're not relentlessly pushing and pushing and pushing, you will fall off the train and get pushed aside by the next guy coming along."

"In 2011 I found some stability in my life and really started working and getting jobs and having focus. But it was just little parts. No one would hire me for anything serious. It was guest stars and things like that. Robert Rodriguez… I walked up to him at the Machete Kills premiere. And I haven't been to a premiere in ages. I was like I was a fish out of water. I'm a homebody. I don't really like going out and dealing with people so it's hard for me, but it's a necessity. So I walk up to Robert after the movie, and I honestly tell him how much I loved the film. And I was like, 'Dude, you've gotta hire me for Machete Kills in Space or whatever's next. I've gotta work with you!"

Apparently that request was not lost on the director. "Robert and I had met in '94 but had never worked together," Busey said. "And my career was now dead, and when I gave Robert that compliment and said, 'I've gotta work with you,' he said, 'You know what, man? I'll keep that in mind.' And a month later I was auditioning for 'From Dusk Till Dawn,' which is such a coup because the movie is such a cult classic and one of my favorites."

So what exactly is the "From Dusk Till Dawn" television series? For those who haven't seen it, it's like a retelling of the story from the film; however, instead of telling it over the course of a movie, the story is being told over the course of a television season, so obviously there is much more to it this time around. Busey sums it up nicely.

"There was a period in my life when I started dating this girl who was very sharp and very well read," Busey said, "and she was curious about my career and how the movie industry works. And I said, 'Here's a script!' proudly. Like, 'This is what I do. You read books? Here, read this. This'll really knock you on your ass.' She read it in 20 minutes, where it takes me three hours to read a script, and she turned and said, 'That's pretty cool. It's kinda like a short story.' And I was like, 'What?!' She said, 'Yeah, like a novella. It's 110 to 120 pages. It takes you from the bottom to the top to the resolution. It's a nice little short story.' That opened my eyes to a reality. And as I'm reading the 'From Dusk Till Dawn' scripts, I'm thinking, 'Oh, right! It reads exactly like the movie, but what we are doing is the full-scale novel… and the movie is the short story.'"

The series includes so much more detail and information that the film simply didn't have room for. Busey explained some of the additions.

"We dive right in," he said enthusiastically. "We explain why Richie is having his visions. In the movie you see Tarantino; he kinda has his visions when he's with the bank teller in the motel and he freaks out and shoots her. And as an audience member you're like, 'Oh yeah, this guy's nuts!' But with the TV show, you're like, 'Oh, he's having supernatural visions.' And there's Mayan gods and snake people!"

Snake people?! Those who have already seen the show will confirm that the baddies in "From Dusk Till Dawn" are certainly reminiscent of vampires, but with some completely new traits. "'The Walking Dead' has zombies covered. 'True Blood' has vampires covered and then they added werewolves and then they added fairies," Busey said. "What Robert and his crew, [exec producer] Carlos Coto especially, have done is really taken an interesting idea from the film, fleshed it out, and made it to where there's a new monster. And they even go so far as to explain this monster and say early Spanish conquistadors confused these monsters for vampires when they arrived and dealt with them. Because they had known about the vampire from Eastern Europe so they just assumed that those 'culebras' were vampires because of the fangs and what have you. But as it turns out, they are Mayan snake people. Snake gods!"

And the look of the creatures is incredible! "It's a great device in the show," Busey said. "You're watching and [at first] say, 'Oh, they're doing another vampire thing. It's a rip-off of "True Blood." Oh, but their fangs are longer… yadda, yadda.' Then you find out, 'Oh! They're fucking anaconda humans! Those are snake fangs with venom!' It's a whole different thing."

Jake Busey - Sex Machine - From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series

The character Busey plays, Professor Tanner (who in last week's episode turned out to also be "Sex Machine," crotch-gun and all), could not be more perfect for him. "I've never been cast in a role that was this near who I am, and this is really fulfilling," Busey effused. "When I read the script, I thought, 'I've got to play this role. It really fits… like a comfortable jacket.' I'm somewhat of a nerd and a stickler for detail, and I like discovering the details in unique history and mythology and interesting stories. So for me, Professor Tanner, who's a professor of archeology and kind of like Indiana Jones when he's in the classroom, is very satisfying. For me, it's a wonderful role."

Busey has been thoroughly impressed by everything involved with the "From Dusk Till Dawn" series thus far. "It's really amazing and has exceeded my expectations as far as crew and cast and story and set," Busey said. "It's just amazing. I really feel if people know about this and know about the El Rey channel, if the audience knows where it is and knows about it, it's going to be on par with 'The Walking Dead' when it took off. I've gotta knock on wood on that one, but it's just been a blessing to be a part of it. And Robert hired me when no one else would, and I've really got to thank him for that."

"From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" returns to the El Rey Network on April 29th with Episode 1.07, "Pandemonium." Visit the El Rey Network website and enter your zip code to find out how to see it in your area.

If it's available where you live and you need to catch up, there will be a "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" marathon on Sunday, April 27th, beginning at 9 am PT/12 noon ET, repeating multiple times throughout the day. You can also find it in the U.S. via the following partners: Amazon, iTunes, Sony Playstation, Xbox, Vudu, Google Play, Cinemanow, Blackberry, and Target Ticket. There is Amazon of course and publishers like Samhain and Cemetery Dance…

We also boast authors ranging from "The King" himself to Dan Simmons, Robert McCammon, the late Thomas Tryon, Tim Curran, Aussies Stephen Irwin, Brett McBean, and Aaron Dries as well as Brits such as David Moody, anthologist Stephen Jones, and Mark Morris, to name just a very few.

But what if you long for the paperback originals which seemed to flood bookstores back in the 80s or want to read even earlier horror that is long out of print? What to do? Well, you turn to Valancourt Books to assuage those yearnings. And we recently spoke with Ryan Cagle, one half of the publishing team that brings those long unavailable titles to life for readers to enjoy again, to learn more.

DC: Hello, Ryan, and thank you for taking time to interview with Dread Central. How did Valancourt Books first come into being? What is the publishing house’s philosophy regarding the kind of books it reprints?

Ryan Cagle: Hi, Elaine, and thank you so much for the interview! Valancourt Books was formed in 2005 when James [Jenkins], the head publisher, was interested in resurrecting some of the classic Gothic novels that were originally published from the 1790s to the 1830s. Most were only available in a couple of university rare book collections worldwide, sometimes only on microfilm. We decided that wasn't good enough and that these classic books needed to be available again for today's readers to enjoy them. We later moved into Victorian-era classics like Sheridan Le Fanu's lesbian vampire novel Carmilla and the works of writers like Bram Stoker and Richard Marsh. In late 2012, we decided to move into more modern fiction after discovering that there was a ton of classic 20th century fiction that, for one reason or another, was out of print and unavailable.

DC: What was the first title published by Valancourt, and how was it chosen?

RC: Our very first book was an anonymously written title called The Animated Skeleton, first published in 1798. It's a highly Gothic terror tale that takes place in the Dark Ages in France. The title is of course what jumped out at us the most. After reading it and doing some research, we knew this would be the perfect title to start with. The Animated Skeleton was a bestseller when originally published but shortly after fell into obscurity. Our edition was the first in over two centuries, and it really defines what Valancourt Books is passionate about doing.

Exclusive: Valancourt Books' Ryan Cagle Talks Re-Releasing Classic and Modern Out of Print Horror Stories

DC: How large is your catalog, and how many titles do you publish a year?

RC: At this writing we have grown to 230 titles in print over the course of our 9-year history. Last year was our busiest ever with over 80 titles coming out. Although it's extremely exciting for us, we hope that this year we may get a chance to take a breath!

DC: What goes into how you choose the titles and authors you publish?

RC: Basically, we publish what we love. Sometimes it's a book we read a long time ago and can't believe it's gone out of print. Other times we get lucky and stumble upon a great title at a used bookstore or online. We also get a lot of great recommendations from fans and readers.

DC: You are a two-man operation – how did you come together and how do you manage to run a publishing house with just two people? Tell us a little about your partner.

RC: James is the head publisher and founder of Valancourt Books. We are married and have been together since 2003. We're very lucky to share the same passion for Gothic and horror literature and dusty old books in general. Running a two-person publishing house has probably been our biggest struggle. We have enough work for a large staff but try to keep the costs down as much as possible so we can continue cranking out affordable editions.

DC: What would you say is your percentage of horror titles, and what are some of the more “known” horror authors/titles you have “resurrected”?

RC: Well, it depends a lot on how you define “horror”! Most of our titles cross genre boundaries and may be mysteries or thrillers with horror elements or may be weird, supernatural, or occult tales that aren't terribly horrific. We also do a lot of Gothic fiction from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and classic Victorian penny dreadfuls and things like that. But at least half — or more — of our catalogue is definitely horror-related.

Probably the most famous authors and titles are some of the classics, like Ann Radcliffe and Bram Stoker, but we're really excited about some of the more modern authors we've helped to rediscover, like John Blackburn, Michael McDowell, Gerald Kersh, and Frank De Felitta.

DC: How do you get authors like Poppy Z. Brite and STEPHEN KING (I'm a huge fan) to write intros to your publications?

RC: When we're looking for someone to write an introduction, we usually try to find someone who has said they're a big fan of the novel. Sometimes well-known authors have written about a book that we're publishing, or they've said in an interview that it's one of their favorites. We've been very fortunate to have great horror authors like Poppy Z. Brite, Ramsey Campbell, and Kim Newman contribute introductions to some of our recent books, and of course, it was very generous of Stephen King to allow us to use his introduction for The Monk -- he's always been a great supporter of small presses. In general, we've been really excited about how supportive the community of horror authors has been for our series.

Exclusive: Valancourt Books' Ryan Cagle Talks Re-Releasing Classic and Modern Out of Print Horror Stories

DC: Are you a horror fan, and if so, which titles have you been excited to reissue? And what are some of your favorite horror novels in general?

RC: I'm a major horror fan! I've been into horror films since I can remember. I was born in '83 so grew up during an amazing time for the horror community. I am still a devout fan of VHS. I also started reading horror literature here and there at a pretty early age. I remember getting into Frankenstein and The Turn of the Screw and things like that in elementary school. I obviously had no idea what the actual themes of the books were at that age, but they must have been foreshadowing my years to come! I also read a lot of Clive Barker, Poppy Z. Brite, and stuff like that in my teens. When we were able to get PZB to write an introduction for our edition of McDowell's The Amulet, it was one of the most exciting things to happen in my life! So hopefully that means we'll get to work with Barker in the future.

DC: What horror titles do you have upcoming?

RC: We have a lot of great horror stuff coming out soon. There's John Blackburn's 1960s pulp classic Children of the Night, about terrifying creatures who live underground and have the power to kill using mind control, and Michael McDowell's The Elementals, which many horror fans think is one of the scariest books ever written. We're also really excited about Michael Talbot's The Delicate Dependency, which came out in 1982 and has been long out of print but has a huge number of fans, some of whom call it the best vampire novel ever written. Our recent release of Frank De Felitta's The Entity (the basis for the classic Barbara Hershey movie) has been our most popular title over the past few months, and we're hoping to be able to offer some more of his soon.

DC: You were kind enough to send me a copy of the late Michael McDowell’s first novel, The Amulet. He is one of my favorite ‘80s paperback horror authors. Do you have plans to publish any more of McDowell’s books, especially his seminal 6-part series The Blackwater Saga?

RC: We would love to do his Blackwater series! At the moment we don't have any plans to republish it, but we do have another one of his fantastic titles, The Elementals, coming out this summer with an introduction by Michael Rowe, whose new novel Wild Fell has been getting rave reviews. But we'll definitely keep Blackwater in mind!

DC: Where can horror fiction fans find your titles?

RC: Our website is the best place to start (ValancourtBooks.com). Although we don't sell directly through our website, we have links to where they can be purchased. Most of our titles are available in paperback as well as Kindle. Valancourt Books is a big supporter of independent bookstores so we always encourage people to request our books through their local store first.

DC: Of your horror titles, which ones would you most recommend to genre fans?

RC: It's a hard question since I love all the ones we publish! But a couple of my recent favorites have been Jack Cady's The Well from 1980, a really unique and creepy story about a house that's possibly haunted by the devil, and M. G. Lewis' The Monk, one of the earliest Gothic horror novels (from 1796), about a monk who sells his soul to the devil in order to get his hands on a young woman. We were excited to republish the novel with an introduction by Stephen King and a number of rare illustrations from the early editions of the book.

DC: What other genre books does Valancourt publish? And how many titles do you publish a year? Is there a physical catalog fans could get their hands on?

RC: Most of our books are hard to fit within a single genre — many of them have elements of horror, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, or thriller — but we generally focus on horror/supernatural books, gay interest titles, and neglected literary classics. Within each of those categories we have 18th/19th century classics and modern titles. At the moment we're issuing about 75-85 new books each year, which is quite a bit for just the two of us! We don't have a printed catalogue, but we're working on a digital version, and in the meantime we constantly update our new releases on our website and Facebook page so be sure to follow us there!

DC: Is there anything you would like to add that I haven’t touched on?

RC: Valancourt Books has only been able to stay alive (undead?) the last 9 years because of our great fan base. We love interacting with our customers and hearing recommendations of what they would like to see return to print. Our Facebook page has become our forum so feel free to visit us there leave us comments or suggestions. We hope to continue doing this for a long time to come!

Written by Michael Swaim and directed by Travis Long, Kill Me Now was filmed on location in Effingham, Illinois, and stars Michael Swaim, Brett Fancy, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Nick Rutherford, Jacob Reed, LisaMarie King, Brentan Schellenbach, Nick Mundy, Kaitlin Large, Dan Rubiano, Noah Byrne, Katy Stoll, Katie Willert, and Daniel O'Brien.

    Synopsis:
In the not-too-distant past, with the help of a windowless van and a jar of chloroform, a group of Internet sketch comedians were hauled off to the backwoods of Illinois to shoot their first movie! The horror comedy features Streamy and Webby Award winner Michael Swaim (“Agents of Cracked”) and the casts of “Those Aren’t Muskets!,” “Good Neighbor,” “Tremendosaur,” “Team Tiger Awesome,” and “Horsehead Businessman.”

Kill Me Now chronicles one unforgettable night in the lives of a ragtag group of small-town teens. It's a night that will prove equally unforgettable for the sinister Driller Killer (Brett Fancy – “EastEnders,” “Luther”), a deranged serial killer bent on ridding the world of vapidity and dumbassedness (everyone else). When he comes upon the kids' all-night graduation party--conveniently held at a cabin deep in the woods--he finds both in spades. Unfortunately, Mr. Killer is about to learn something crappy bumper stickers learned long ago: stupid people can be deadly in large numbers. Kill Me Now blends horror, comedy, depth and plain jackassery to form a brew so potent you won't know whether to laugh, scream, or think about, like, life and stuff. The movie features performances from a staggering array of the Internet's hottest up-and-coming comedians, writing from the guys behind “Those Aren't Muskets!” and Cracked.com, direction from a dude whose previous work includes hardcore, joint-smokin', Twista-havin', Kanye-featurin' rap videos, and at least one scene where a chick totally gets a drill to the brain. But it's funny!

New Poe Anthology Is a Project of EvilEven after all these years, the tales of Edgar Allan Poe still send shivers down our spines, and a new indie anthology is ready to share some of the man's most macabre with a whole new audience. Read on for the skinny on P.O.E.: Project of Evil!

Italian horror maestros re-imagine seven Edgar Allan Poe tales in this dark, twisted anthology. Brain Damage Films is set to release the English-language, Italian-made disturbing horror anthology on DVD and On Demand May 6th across the US and Canada.

Following up the successful 2011 film P.O.E.: Poetry of Eerie, in which 15 international directors were brought together to recreate 13 different Edgar Allan Poe stories, some of the original filmmakers have regrouped for this newest experiment.

While the original film's focus was the poetic and macabre dimension of the infamous Boston author, this sequel focuses instead on the bloody, violent, and disturbing.

Stories include The Pit and the Pendulum, Solo, Loss of Breath, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart, The System of Dr. Tar and Prof. Feather, and The Premature Burial... Like you've never seen before!

Rubber, Road, Brains and Souls: 5 Killer Car Flicks That Will Never Be Forgotten

    $
    0
    0

Rubber, Road, Brains and Souls: 5 Killer Car Flicks That Will Never Be ForgottenInanimate objects often wriggle their way into horror films. We’ve seen porcelain dolls slaughter naïve victims. We’ve seen video game characters decimate the unsuspecting. And, perhaps the most lifeless menace to brutalize fleeing victims, the evil vehicle.

Four wheels (in most cases) designed to do nothing but obliterate mankind. It’s a petrifying thought when you consider all the deranged drivers behind the wheel these days. Really, how many fatal road rage incidents occur on an annual basis?

And that’s precisely the reason that killer car movies are infinitely more frightening than any other pic focused in on insensible, pulseless antagonists. We know that cars, trucks and motorcycles (this one doesn’t earn mention in this particular article, but look into Rage, a really entertaining indie moto-flick) can lead to instantaneous expiration. We understand that, be it a legitimate malfunction, a drunken fool or a crazed driver behind the wheel, there is very tangible danger that looms about automobiles. That’s real life. That’s an extremely plausible hazard. People die every day die in auto collisions.

Dig on the five greatest killer car flicks below. And please, I implore you to spill your (damn near) guaranteed disagreements, stubborn insistences, and hopefully, other recommendations. I’m a lunatic for this subgenre, and if you’ve got a recommendation to share, I’ll be more than grateful to welcome your thoughts.

Rubber, Road, Brains and Souls: 5 Killer Car Flicks That Will Never Be Forgotten

Number 5 - Duel: The made-for-television film that brought Hollywood powerhouse Steven Spielberg to full attention just so happened to be a deranged feature about a long distance trip that begins as any other, and ends up the shithole of all nightmares. Released in 1971, this has to be one of the earliest showcases of just how extreme road rage truly can be. In fact, I’d bet money a few contemporary madmen that enjoy leaping behind the wheel have probably studied this animal. A slow burn picture that explores a plethora of emotions from our lead, David Mann (played by Dennis Weaver), Duel works wonderfully into a strained thriller that lacks no action and offers the ideal payoff. Loaded with a leaden dose of mystery, terror and even sympathy, it’s near impossible to not find yourself entirely engaged in what is one of the finest direct-to-the-small-screen productions ever released.

MORE Killer Car Flicks on the NEXT page!

Number 4 - Jeepers Creepers:Jeepers Creepers isn’t an outright killer car flick. It just so happens to prominently boast a kick-ass theme in the form of a menace of a machine (be-eating-u?) that guides one of the coolest movie monsters we’ve seen birthed in a few decades in his quest to devour human body parts. The modified ’41 Chevy COE just so happens to fully enhance the fear induced by the film as it is, in a sense, a piece of the Creeper. Just contemplating the film in general, truly examining its content, it becomes difficult to not consider this an intentionally hybrid-villain of a film. That rusted POS is damn near as frightening as the movie’s monster itself, and it earns more than enough screen time to hammer home the idea that it is no doubt just as much a danger as the Creeper is himself. Whether you’re a fan of Victor Salva or not, he deserves major credit for creating a jarring monster/car movie.

Number 3 - Joy Ride: God bless Paul Walker. That dude was a solid performer who had a sadly obvious obsession with automobiles and high speed travel. More specifically, joy rides. I mean no offense by that, whatsoever, and I make no attempt at toying with puns. As a fan I found it quite disheartening to know that he’d gone in such fashion. That, and I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Pleasantville– but if you repeat that, I’ll be forced to track you down and inflict bodily damage. The fact of the matter is this: Joy Ride was an awesome movie that actually sports replay value. The slow climb to the picture’s summit is loaded with disconcerting sequences, and our faceless killer is just the kind of nuisance that’s insane enough to really scare the shit out of viewers. That’s a special thing; it just doesn’t happen on film all that frequently. Throw in great synergy among Walker, Steve Zahn and Leelee Sobieski, and you’re left with a piece of celluloid that’s going to be remembered decades from now. I should know... I own it and throw it in the DVD player every few years; it never disappoints.

MORE Killer Car Flicks on the NEXT page!

Number 2 - Death Proof: I’m likely to catch some hell for this, but that’s a-okay in my book. (You know how people say, 'YOU'RE OKAY IN MY BOOK' or 'AND IN MY BOOK THAT'S NO GOOD'? Well, I actually have... a book.) In my opinion, Death Proof offers forth some of the greatest dialogue I’ve ever heard (you’ve seen me harping on this one in the past). But that’s only the beginning. The array of lust-worthy classic cars (an amazing Dodge Challenger, a ’71 Nova and my personal favorite of the lot, Mike’s ’69 Charger, to name a few) on display is more than enough to get just about any man riled up, but the roles these vehicles play in the film are what really sets the entire piece over the edge. Stuntman Mike may be a villain, but it’s that fuckin’ car that really sends chills down the spine. And the moment in which Mike’s Charger and the “borrowed” Challenger go head to head... well, that’s not only homage to past great features, it’s a contemporary, brilliant juxtaposition of man and machine. Who woulda thunk it? Metal, so paralyzing!

Number 1 – Christine: In this subgenre it doesn’t get any better. John Carpenter, the absolute perfect trio of performers and a stunning 1958 Plymouth Fury that wants nothing more than true love, and loads of homicide all come together to create cinematic magic. Carpenter’s adaptation of Stephen King’s amazing novel is one of the greatest films of the 1980s. Damn near everything is right about Christine, and it’s surprisingly faithful to King’s work. John invested extra care in this production – perhaps out of respect for King, perhaps because he was in the absolute prime of his career and could seemingly do no wrong – and it shows. The lighting, the vengeance of Christine and the downward spiral into madness that Arnie Cunningham experiences... it all feels so astoundingly organic. This could be your best friend, sucked into some strange paranormal Hell where nothing but fixation and vengeance matter. Again, technically, Christine is a superb piece of art that rapidly builds into a gut-wrenching conclusion that now (and then, I suppose) feels all but unavoidable.
