    Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films

    $
    0
    0

Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror FilmsThe work of H.P. Lovecraft has inspired not only legions of fans throughout the years but an entire sub-genre of horror. Highlighted by frail, false realities masking a horrific and unfathomable truth… and of course, tentacles, fans embrace Lovecraftian horror films like the squishy appendages they feature.

And with the release of Dead Shadows, we remember our Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films.

This list contains not just movies inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, although some of them are certainly here; it also has movies that fall into the Lovecraftian-inspired category. Cosmic horror of the unknown and unknowable that could fracture sanity hovering over reality. Cthulhu. And, of course, those tentacles we mentioned earlier.

As for honorable mentions, how about the wildly popular hit HBO show "True Detective" for starters? There are certainly some Lovecraftian influences there, including Rust Cohle's ideas on fate and religion and the cult of Hastur operating in Louisiana. Rod Serling's "Night Gallery" adapted some Lovecraftian works, and "The Outer Limits" had episodes that embraced the mood.

As for films, there are plenty that walk the Lovecraftian path. John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness certainly fit the bill, as does The Resurrected and Malefique. Lovecraft director extraordinaire Stuart Gordon's Castle Freak is adapted from one of the author's stories, and the hilarious horror/sci-fi/comedy At World's End starts with a pub crawl and ends up with humans facing an unspeakable reality… 'Show me the way to the next whiskey bar'… now that's Lovecraftian!

Now, without further ado, on to the...

    Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films

    The Evil Dead (1981)
After The Evil Dead writer/director Sam Raimi studied H.P. Lovecraft, he was inspired to make a film entitled Book of the Dead, which was to be a full-length retelling of his Within the Woods short film. A pretty ambitious plan for a filmmaker who had just turned 20 years old. The Evil Dead does not scream Lovecraft, but the fact that the entire situation revolves around a Necronomicon (Book of the Dead) and the fact that we have plenty of otherworldly, inter-dimensional things going in The Evil Dead (and also its sequels) make this one that definitely qualifies for this list.

    Necronomicon (1993)
Also known by its extended titles, Necronomicon: Book of the Dead and Necronomicon: To Hell and Back, the three sections in this anthology film are each based on Lovecraft stories and feature a different director. Brian Yuzna directs Whispers, which is based on The Whisperer in the Darkness (incidentally, Yuzna also directs the wrap-around piece, The Library, that runs between the anthology segments). Christophe Gans directs The Drowned, based on Rats in the Walls, and The Cold, based on Cool Air, is helmed by Shusuke Kaneko. Lovecraft himself is featured as a character in the movie and is fittingly played by Jeffrey Combs, who would go on to compile quite a resume of Lovecraft-inspired work.

MORE Lovecraftian Horror Films on the NEXT page!

    The Thing (1982)
The first part of John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy (along with In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness, each with their own Lovecraftian ties), The Thing has intense Lovecraftian issues as we learn that if the indescribable thing reaches the unsuspecting human population, it would certainly mean the end of life as we know it. Although the movie was actually based on John W. Campbell, Jr.'s novella, Who Goes There?, moviegoers have long appreciated the influence that H.P. Lovecraft certainly had on both the book and movie versions of the story. And tentacles, oh yeah, plenty of tentacles!

    From Beyond (1986)
Directed by Stuart Gordon, produced by Brian Yuzna and starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, this Lovecraftian power quartet created this adaptation directly from the short story by H.P. Lovecraft with the same name. It's based around a scientific experiment gone horribly awry and has all the makings of a great Lovecraftian story. It's got gruesome creatures and alternate dimensions, it's got tentacles and heightened perceptions and a sense of foreboding that runs throughout the movie. Gordon reunited Combs and Crampton as they had worked together previously on a Lovecraftian film (yes, yes…it's on the list) and knew they would be asked to do some rather strange things. Purists are sometimes put off by the overt sexuality of From Beyond, but all we can say is, lighten up. Man cannot live on tentacles alone!

    The Mist (2007)
You want mysterious creatures, unsuspecting humans and a sudden sense of impending doom? You've got it all in The Mist, which was based on a Stephen King novella. So while the inspiration for the story was not Lovecraftian (it actually came to King on a visit to the grocery store with his son), the sense of horrific fear beyond the scope of human knowledge and comprehension, combined with the tentacles and their squid-like appearance on otherwise unseen beasts, definitely shows Lovecraft's influence on King. And, of course, there's the seemingly ever-present New England locale that both Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft use so commonly in their works.

MORE Lovecraftian Horror Films on the NEXT page!

    Alien (1979)
Here we begin our Sigourney Weaver section of the list. Hey, Jeffrey Combs and Stuart Gordon can't get all the love! Weaver's first appearance in an overtly Lovercraftian-styled film occurred when she appeared as Ripley in Alien. Alien had a Lovecraftian component built right into the art team as H.R. Giger, an artist with a known Lovecraftian influence, designed the signature alien creature (based on his creation Necronom IV) that would go on to define the franchise. Giger would win an Oscar in 1980 for his work on the film. If looking at the drooling xenomorphs isn't enough to convince you of Giger's love for HPL, the fact that he named his first printed collection of images Necronomicon should prove it. Now where have we heard that name before?

    Ghostbusters (1984)
Sigourney Weaver returned a few years later to star in another Lovecraft-flavored film. Ghostbusters is certainly the funniest film on this list, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its money shot moments. With gods and monsters coming from other dimensions and that obligatory feeling of doom right around the corner, Ghostbusters has tons of elements to qualify it for this list. And if you need more proof, check out this quote from Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) a.k.a. Vince Clortho, Keymaster of Gozer… "Gozer the Traveler! He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms! During the rectification of the Vuldrianaii, the Traveler came as a large, unmoving Torb, then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Sloar! Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was like to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day, I can tell you!"

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Finally, Ms. Sigourney Weaver returns not to fight the evil as she did in Alien or to assist it as when she was possessed by Zul in Ghostbusters, but in The Cabin in the Woods Weaver is The Director of The Facility, a faction responsible for keeping The Ancient Ones at bay. And it is these Ancient Ones that bring the most Lovecraftian flair to the movie. In true Cthulhu mythos fashion, the power of The Ancient Ones is only hinted at for most of the film (that is, until the final moments when they decide to lay the smack down on Earth), but once again we have a huge ominous power hanging over the movie, with the vast majority of humanity having no idea they are just one teenager's death (or survival) away from complete annihilation.

MORE Lovecraftian Horror Films on the NEXT page!

    The Call of Cthulhu (2005)
Who knows Lovecraft better than members of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society? This group was responsible for distributing The Call of Cthulhu, which was a silent film adaptation of the Lovecraft story. Produced by Sean Branney and Andrew Leman (Leman also directed), the film runs just 47 minutes long but is a very creative effort. It was shot silently and in black-and-white so as to give the audience the feel of a film created in the 1920's. This is a wildly successful adaptation and popular among Lovecraft fans. If you need something done right, you do it yourself… and get the historical society on board to help out!

    Dagon (2001)
Stuart Gordon appears again on the list as he directed this Spanish film (Brian Yuzna produced), which is based on the Lovecraft novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth (not his short story Dagon as one might assume). The film kept very close to the source material and was embraced by most fans. The film centers around the worship of the god Dagon and the Imbocans, who do the worshiping. And none of the congregation is more colorful than the unforgettable Uxia, who must be seen to be believed, but let's just say, if you've got to have tentacles wrapped around you, these would be the ones you'd want.

    Re-Animator (1985)
Amongst horror fans this is probably the most memorable film based on a Lovecraft story. Re-Animator (from the story Herbert West—Reanimator) left an impression on audiences that still lasts to this day as some of the shocking imagery from the film was just unforgettable…you know what I'm talking about. Once again the team of Stuart Gordon directing with Brian Yuzna producing and Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton starring made for another fantastic Lovecraft adaptation. Although some HPL fans felt the movie was a desecration of their hero, who could never write such exploitation, in reality it is a relatively close retelling of the story. And regular ol' horror fans loved every drop of the 24 gallons of blood Gordon used on the film (his previous bloodshed record for a film was two gallons).

    The Blood Stream: Proteus

    $
    0
    0

The Blood Stream: ProteusThe Blood Stream mines the Internet for horror gold so you don’t have to, delivering streamable horror titles never before featured on Dread Central. Occasionally I’ll dredge up something good, maybe even great. To find those gems, I’ll have to sift through a lot of breathtakingly bad cinema. Enjoy!

It's hard to think of many movies more intentionally, non-ironically derivative than Proteus (1995).

First the obvious: A group of unsuspecting people happens upon an oil rig housing a dark, mutated secret. Right off the bat we've got direct plagiarism of maritime monster movies like Leviathan and Deepstar Six, albeit a decade late and several million production dollars short. (Obviously Leviathan>Deepstar. I will hear no argument on the subject.) But Proteus' shameless cribbing doesn't end there.

    Proteus

With the exception of the finale's more or less passable money shot, the gloppy, haphazard creature effects are a halfhearted knockoff of Bob Bottin's work in The Thing. Wailing, drawn out violin tones make the comparison unavoidable. Instead of Bottin's elaborately articulated nightmare creations, Proteus features little more than a few pulsating piles of rubber doused with motor oil. Occasionally, for no reason at all, the monsters take the form of actors wearing Halloween masks. Other times they're literally just clumps of latex dangling from a string through a hole in the ceiling. The illusion is less than convincing.

    Proteus

As if all that wasn't enough to cram into one B-movie, somebody apparently decided to squeeze in The Usual Suspects as well. The exposition scenes of Proteus feature two elements that closely mirror the intro to The Usual Suspects: A boat explosion presented with no context and a tense, one-on-one dialogue between a bloodied hero and a half-seen, cigarette smoking aggressor.

    Proteus

Both movies were released in August 1995, but The Usual Suspects screened at Cannes the preceding May. That would have been more than enough time for an opportunistic production company to order hasty reshoots in hopes of capitalizing on what everyone knew was going to be a big hit. Unfortunately, they must have run out of time. After the first two minutes, this interview scene -- clearly intended to bookend the narrative -- never shows up again. Just like that...it's gone.

I still enjoyed parts of Proteus for sheer nostalgia. If you haven't seen it yet and you have fond memories of cheesy, late 20th century sci-fi/horror, you might too. Proteus hits virtually every every 80s/90s action movie cliche with gusto.

    Proteus

Our hero sports huge, perpetually oiled muscles. He wears his pants hiked up to the ribcage, matched with a puffy, tucked-in t-shirt. His girlfriend is inexplicably able to decipher technical schematics, often exclaiming, "It must have been some kind of genetic experiment!" Corporate conspiracies, ethical violations, human-voiced auto-destruct sequences, diving away from explosions...I could go on but I suddenly have an overpowering urge to listen to Smashing Pumpkins and play Magic: The Gathering.

Add Proteus to your Netflix queue.

    Proteus

Though the effects, direction and editing are terrible (from the team that brought you Carnosaur!), the cast isn't half bad. Granted, they're forced to play New England heroin smugglers with names like Chrissy, Mark and Linda. (GANGSTA!) But they do a decent job with what they're given. Especially fun is the macho leading man, Craig Fairbrass, whose gruff, London accent will be familiar to fans of the Modern Warfare video game series. I recognized him as Delmar, the hired gun/soccer enthusiast in Cliffhanger who almost kicked Michael Rooker off a mountain.

Fairbrass is a little like a cockney Nathan Fillion on steroids. I wonder if his toned physique got him typecast as a Stallone/Schwarzenegger wannabe, curtailing a possibly grander career. He has solid comedic timing, delivering jokes so naturally they feel ad libbed. In Proteus this hulking, machine gun toting man-beast spends the first act getting his ass handed to him by little old men and mousey research scientists. His wounded masculine pride leads to dry, exasperated quips like, “That’s the second time today I’ve been thrown around the room by a complete stranger. My confidence now is very, very low.”

    Proteus

Alas, Proteus is a movie you're likely to enjoy only if you're hard up and/or partaking in a few cocktails. Instead, why not stream yourself a little Death Machine?

Vastly wackier and even more dated than Proteus, Death Machine is also derivative sci-fi horror that will never escape the era in which it was made. Nevertheless it's a good deal more fun and feels much more like a viable piece of entertainment. And who doesn't love goofy styrofoam power armor?

Questionable Godzilla Image; Akira Takarada Cut from Theatrical PrintWith all the good Godzilla news coming out this past year, it was only a matter of time before something crappy hit the wire. As it turns out, franchise star Akira Takarada's cameo has been omitted from the theatrical cut of the film.

The news comes from Yutaka Ichimura on Facebook, who writes that "Takarada-san today revealed during his talk show at 'Super Festival' in Tokyo that his cameo scenes for the upcoming Legendary's 'Godzilla' were omitted and would not be included in the final film."

Super bummer, but let's hope for the goods to be included in the home video release, shall we? Also in other dubious Godzilla news, The L.A. Times posted a new image which is stunning but also has us thinking it's fan made as no one in it is running. Call us crazy, but a 200-foot tall lizard would have us running like Carl Lewis down the street at speeds in excess of Mach 3 and beyond. Check it out! Real or not, it is cool.

You can also dig on a new still we are sure is legit under the one you see below via USA Today.

    Godzilla

    Godzilla

From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Richard T. Jones, Sally Hawkins, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, Yuki Morita, and C.J. Adams star in the film, which has been rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence."

Top Film Festivals Collaborate for Cannes Horror Showcase; First Look at Darkness by Day

Top Film Festivals Collaborate for Cannes Horror Showcase; First Look at Darkness by DaySet to kick off on May 14th, this year's Cannes Film Festival will see the premieres of many hotly anticipated genre flicks, and today we've gotten word of an exciting collaboration between Cannes and other top festivals that brings even more exciting genre fare to the event.

Per Variety, Ventana Sur's genre film market Blood Window will team with the world’s top six fantastic film fests for five Blood Window Midnight Galas of Latin American genre movies.

Four event partners collaborate to select one film each at the Blood Window Galas: Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Spain’s Sitges-Catalonia Festival, the Puchon Fantastic Fest, and the Frontieres Co-production Market, a joint venture of Montreal’s Fantasia Fest, Vision-in-Motion, and Brussels Festival.

The first Blood Window Midnight Galas line-up includes two sci-fi movies – The Incident and Fallen Cape– plus a rabies outbreak movie with Sapphic undertones: Darkness by Day.

The Incident combines two stories of people trapped in illogical endless spaces for 35 years: wo brothers and a detective locked on an infinite stairwell and a family on an endless road to the beach.

Directed by Spain’s Santiago Alvarado and put forward by Sitges, Fallen Cape turns on a wrongly disgraced superhero, forced to work in a store.

Put forward by South Korea’s Puchon-PiFan Fest, Darkness by Day (stills and artwork below), a village-set mood genre auteur piece helmed by Argentine’s Martin Desalvo, is sold by Germany’s M-Appeal.

Unspooling May 16-20 at the Rue d’Antibes’ Star Cinema, the Blood Window showcase kicks off with Gabriel Grieco’s Still Life, also from Argentina.

A serial killer slasher/procedural set in Argentina’s big ranch country where the suspects all belong to a group of vegan activists and the victims to the cattle industry, Still Life snagged four plaudits at Blood Window’s Bloody Work In Progress last December, including selection for Morbido’s 2014 edition.

The Cannes showcase closes with The House at the End of Time, from Venezuela’s Alejandro Hidalgo, a symptomatic mix of horror. A mother of two experiences ghoulish apparitions in an old house – with reflections on the psychology of family dynamics; 30 years later, now elderly, she returns to try to discover what really happened.

Latin American VOD platform Clarovideo will make available the Blood Window Screenings title for 24 hours the same day as it screens physically in Cannes.

Most of the big 80s horror franchises ventured into the world of 3D at one point or another, but one series that never asked you to slap on those blue and red glasses was Poltergeist. That all changes next year, however, when the reboot haunts theaters. Read on!

In an interview with Beyond the Trailer, star Jared Harris (The Quiet Ones) briefly talked about the Sam Raimi-produced remake, revealing that it will be released in 3D.

Considering we never heard anything about this before, we're inclined to believe the film is being converted in post-production, though we don't yet know for sure. Check out the full interview below!

Twentieth Century Fox has announced a Valentine’s Day weekend release for the Poltergeist remake. Gil Kenan is currently lensing the film that will hit theaters February 13, 2015.

Harris will play Carrigan, a larger than life TV personality who left the world of academia behind to become the star host of basic cable TV show “Haunted House Cleaners.”

Rosemarie DeWitt, Sam Rockwell, Kyle Catlett, Saxon Sharbino, and Jane Adams also star in a revisionist take on the classic horror film. David Lindsay-Abaire, Juliet Snowden, and Stiles White worked on the screenplay.

    Synopsis
A family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.

Weekend Box Office: The Quiet Ones Fails to Make Much Noise

Weekend Box Office: The Quiet Ones Fails to Make Much NoiseI keep hearing The Quiet Ones is so loud and noisy that its title seems a bad joke. Well, the joke's on it because the supernatural chiller only succeeded at tying Vampire Academy as the year’s lowest opening for a wide release film. And that wasn't its only dubious honor.

While Captain America’s comic book war against Hydra was finally knocked out of the top slot by three women waging a comic war against the penis, The Quiet Ones bombed in a big way.

The latest Lionsgate spookfest (the one with the trailer that even had me wondering if it was supposed to be some sort of prequel to The Apparition since both films seem to be conducting the same paranormal experiment) opened in 7th place with barely $4 million for its first (and most likely next-to-last) weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, The Quiet Ones experienced the worst opening ever for a supernatural horror movie playing at more than 2,000 screens.

Oculus is currently the highest grossing horror flick of the year, which isn’t all that impressive considering its lump sum is so far just a smidge over $25 million.

Transcendence fell to 6th place with less than $4.1 million, further solidifying its status as one of the guaranteed biggest money-losers of 2014. A Haunted House 2 is already down to 10th place with another $2.7 million. A third installment looks increasingly unlikely.

Next weekend is all about whether or not the movie that exists solely to set up The Amazing Spider-Man 3 can web enough money to guarantee that and the myriad of planned spin-off movies happen.

Kevin Smith's Comes the Krampus Renamed Anti-Claus; XYZ Films Selling International Rights

Kevin Smith's Comes the Krampus Renamed Anti-Claus; XYZ Films Selling International RightsWe recently told you about Kevin Smith's new holiday horror anthology film that embraces the European child-eating Christmas creature known as The Krampus, and now it has a new title and international sales agent. Read on for the details!

    From the Press Release:
XYZ Films has picked up all international sales rights to Kevin Smith’s ANTI-CLAUS, a Yuletide horror film populated by the stars of Smith’s TUSK, including Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, and Michael Parks.

The festive fright flick will be produced by Jordan Monsanto, Andy McElfresh, and Jennifer Schwalbach for Smith’s SModcast Pictures with Jason Mewes executive producing. XYZ Films will give buyers their first look at the project during the Marché du Film in Cannes this May.

ANTI-CLAUS tells the tale of the centuries-old, devil-like creature known the world over as the Krampus – the “Anti-Claus” of Alpine country folklore, infamous for eating naughty children during the season of giving.

“When I was a kid, if they wanted to make a Christmas horror movie, they’d stick an axe in Santa’s hands,” says Smith. “In ANTI-CLAUS we leave Santa alone and creep with the Krampus through twisted tales of holly-jolly murder, desire, desperation, and despair. Just in time for the holiday season.”

Principal photography begins in September. Explains Smith, “In America we’re taught that nice kids gets presents from Santa and naughty kids get coal. But in countries like Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Romania, and Hungary, Christmas is more metal than merry: Saint Nicholas brings a sack full of toys for good kids and the Krampus carries an empty bag for taking away the bad kids. I wanna see THAT Christmas movie. So rather than wait for it, we’ll make it instead.”

Robert Kurtzman, the SFX legend behind the makeup for TUSK, also returns to create the Krampus. WME Global is handling North American sales.

XYZ Films is also currently handling sales for Smith’s upcoming and highly anticipated horror-thriller TUSK, which will be released by A24 later this year. Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group acquired several international territories at the European Film Market in February.
