Eliza Dushku and Chace Crawford to Topline Psychological Thriller Eloise

Eliza Dushku and Chace Crawford to Topline Psychological Thriller EloiseI must admit that I have a big ole soft spot for movies that take place in abandoned mental asylums, especially when they're actually shot inside real ones. Such is the case with Eloise, and we've got all the spooky details for ya today!

Per Deadline, Eliza Dushku, Chace Crawford, Brandon T. Jackson and PJ Byrne have all been cast in the Robert Legato-directed thriller, which begins shooting on May 5th.

Written by Chris Borrelli (The Vatican Tapes), the film is set in a defunct insane asylum known as “Eloise.” Four friends break into the abandoned institution in hopes of finding a death certificate, which will provide Jacob (Crawford) with the rights to a sizable inheritance. While inside the asylum, the group not only finds that the institution houses a horrifying history but also the truth about their own tragic pasts.

The psychological thriller is being shot in Michigan's Eloise Insane Asylum, which was one of the largest mental institutions in the world. What began as one building in Westland, MI in 1832, rapidly grew into a 78-building self-sustained city, complete with its own fire and police departments, train station, post office and farms. Eloise closed its doors in 1982, and has since been dormant and left to ruin.

Tripp Vinson and Sanford Nelson are producing and Linden Nelson, Don Foss, Lisa Zambri and Sean Gowrie are exec producing.

WME Global will sell North American rights and Hyde Park International will shop the offshore rights at Cannes next month.

From director Paul Tanter comes a movie that's trying incredibly hard to emulate James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s 2004 Saw. The question is... is this a loving homage and testament to that film's staying power or is this just a lame cash grab that's arrived about 9 years too late? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Lucky Bastard Comes On VOD

Meet the Lucky Bastard in Pair of Red Band ClipsThe much talked about NC-17 flick Lucky Bastard is coming home to VOD on May 15th so you know what that means! Yep, grab your tissues, a good tarp, maybe even a Tyvek suit. You just can't be too careful!

From the Press Release
See what happens when the adult film industry and “found footage” mix in the indie, horror-thriller LUCKY BASTARD when it becomes available On Demand starting May 15th.

When the adult website LUCKY BASTARD runs a contest giving the winner a night with a famous porn star, the outcome turns from fantasy to horror in a deadly nightmare no one could possibly have expected. LUCKY BASTARD stars Don McManus (GRAND PIANO, LOVELACE), Jay Paulson (MAD MEN), and Betsy Rue (MY BLOODY VALENTINE).

LUCKY BASTARD will be available on Cable on Demand, YouTube, Google Play, PlayStation Network, and XBox Live starting May 15th. Eager fans of indie horror and genre films will be happy to find that LUCKY BASTARD is now available for pre-order (both rental and EST) on Amazon Instant Video.

Synopsis
LUCKY BASTARD is the story of a shy young man who wins a contest to have sex with a famous porn star on an adult website. When the young man arrives at the porno house/set location, his every move is captured on the numerous “reality television-style” wallcams that are spread out everywhere in the house. It is the found footage from these cameras that tells the story of the inevitable and horrifying reality of what actually happened.

At the center of the story are: Mike (Don McManus), who owns the “Lucky Bastard” website; his top porn star Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue); and Dave G. (Jay Paulson), the unsuspecting shy young man who wins the contest.

The “Lucky Bastard” employees treat their work matter-of-factly. Mike once clearly had more serious artistic ambitions, but now he runs the company and directs all of the “Lucky Bastard” website’s content. Ashley, the website’s most popular performer, initially refuses to participate because she knows the winner will be humiliated by the experience but ultimately gives in when offered extra money. And the contest winner, Dave, an unassuming and shy young man, finds himself driven by shame and humiliation into committing the most horrifying acts imaginable.

The cast of LUCKY BASTARD includes veteran performers known for their work in movies, TV, and theatre, including Jay Paulson (familiar to audiences as Don Draper’s brother, Adam Whitman, in "Mad Men"), Don McManus (Grand Piano, Lovelace, The Congress), and lead actress Betsy Rue (best known from the horror hit My Bloody Valentine).

LUCKY BASTARD crosses many genres—drama, comedy, suspense thriller, horror—without entirely belonging to any of them and implicitly comments on a society in which pornography is not only a common part of modern life but also a mirror reflecting the nature of intimacy in today’s world. The movie also reshapes in unpredictable ways the recent cinematic convention of “found footage.”

“Rosemary’s Baby,” the four-hour adaptation of the 1967 best-selling suspense novel by Ira Levin, will air on NBC Sunday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 15th. The telecast will air each night from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT.

“Rosemary’s Baby” centers on a young married couple who move into a Paris apartment that has a haunted past. After getting pregnant, the wife becomes increasingly suspicious that both her husband and their neighbors will have ulterior motives when her child is born.

The miniseries, from Lionsgate Television, stars Zoe Saldana, Patrick J. Adams, Jason Isaacs, and Carole Bouquet. The psychological thriller was written by Scott Abbott (Queen of the Damned) and James Wong (Final Destination 3, “American Horror Story,” “The X-Files”) and directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, “The Wire,” “Treme”).

"ROSEMARY'S BABY - NIGHT ONE" (5/11/14, 9-11PM)
After a personal tragedy leaves Rosemary (Zoe Saldana) and Guy (Patrick J. Adams) Woodhouse anxious for a fresh start, the young married couple depart for Paris, where Guy has landed a job teaching at The Sorbonne. Upon their arrival, a series of unfortunate events occur, and soon Rosemary and Guy are presented with an offer they can’t refuse: an apartment with the most prestigious address in the city. They find comfort in this strange city among their new friends and neighbors, Roman (Jason Isaacs) and Margaux (Carole Bouquet) Castevet, but soon find the apartment comes with a haunted past. This well-to-do, successful older couple take the newcomers under their wings and become very involved with the Woodhouses’ lives. Meanwhile, Rosemary spends some quality time with her dear friend Julie (Christine Cole), learning how to cook at Le Cordon Bleu. Everything seems wonderful as the couple decide to try to conceive a baby.

"ROSEMARY'S BABY - NIGHT TWO" (5/15/14, 9-11PM)
In this two-hour conclusion, Rosemary’s (Zoe Saldana) health rapidly declines with her pregnancy while Guy’s (Patrick J. Adams) career takes off with the successful completion of his book. At the same time Roman (Jason Isaacs) and Margaux (Carole Bouquet) each take a peculiar and very intimate interest in the young couple. Untimely and gruesome deaths seem prevalent, and we soon learn why. As Rosemary’s due date approaches, the truth about her baby becomes clear, and everyone’s true colors come to light.

Exclusive Interview with Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion of Stage Fright

Exclusive Interview with Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion of Stage FrightThe newest horror musical Stage Fright (review) is poised for release, and we have the scoop! Starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf, this retro slasher is a great throwback for fans of Phantom of the Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Dread Central: I don't know if you remember me, but I was a huge supporter of your short film, The Legend of Beaver Dam. I love it so much! So I am wondering... when you got the backing to make a feature horror musical, why not go with expanding on The Legend of Beaver Dam?

Jerome Sable: Even though we made The Legend of Beaver Dam first, the idea for Stage Fright actually preceded it. Batalion and I knew we wanted to do a slasher film at a musical theatre camp, but we realized we would probably need to make a short film first, before anyone would back an entire feature. We at first tried to find a shorter story within the story of Stage Fright, but that search turned up empty, so we came up with The Legend of Beaver Dam as a separate, standalone short story. I’m curious what you imagine the feature version of The Legend of Beaver Dam would be about. How do you see the expansion of the story?

Eli Batalion: Are you allowed to do that?

Sable: Do what?

Batalion: Ask questions back to an interviewer?

Sable: I dunno. Am I?

Awkward silence.

Sable: Are you allowed to interview your co-interviewee?

Batalion: I dunno, are you?

Long awkward silence.

Batalion: Soooo, yeahhhh, guess I’m not allowed to ask that question to either of you. (Breaks out cigarette) So this just got weird…

Sable: You can’t smoke here.

Batalion: I know, I don’t even smoke. This is really weird. Next question?

DC: Umm. Moving right along! People who liked The Legend of Beaver Dam may be surprised when they watch Stage Fright. They're both quite different from one another. Was that a conscious decision?

Sable: Yes, as you now know, Stage Fright is not an expansion of The Legend of Beaver Dam, however they are linked in that they both riff on similar genre mash-ups (horror + musical comedy). The concept of The Legend of Beaver Dam, to me, works best as a short story, while with Stage Fright, the story offers a bigger creative playground, so to speak, with more opportunities to explore different characters and different kinds of musical numbers. However, because Stage Fright deals heavily with the culture of theatre kids and the world of Broadway, it’s possible that it will appeal to an even more specific audience than The Legend of Beaver Dam. It’s certainly not for everybody.

Batalion: I, for one, won’t even watch it.

Sable: Ya, but you don’t watch any movies.

Batalion: True. But still. In the hypothetical world where I entertain the notion of entertaining myself with entertainment, this is literally the last thing I’d watch, if I were stuck on a desert island and the only thing I could eat was Netflix.

Sable: Netflix does kind of sound like a good cereal, right?

Batalion: Right?

DC: You have a marvelous cast -- notable are your name stars, Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Would you please tell us how they came on board, and what it was like to work with them?

Sable: With Minnie, we were lucky that one of our producers, Ari Lantos, had worked with her on one of his other films, so there was a relationship there and he was able to reach out to her directly. She watched The Legend of Beaver Dam and enjoyed it and I think that was a significant factor in her decision to sign on for the role of Kylie Swanson. When I first spoke with her about the project, we also discussed her work in Phantom of the Opera and how we wanted to put a twist on the British mega-musical’s version of that famous slasher story. Minnie’s from the U.K., and I think the British are always up for a bit of ironic fun.

Batalion: They generally like to take the piss.

Sable: Or get pissed.

Batalion: Or piss off.

Sable: They have a urinary culture.

Batalion: Speaking of urinary culture… (reaching for his laptop bag)

Sable: Ummm, let’s keep our lab tests to ourselves, big boy.

(Batalion puts his laptop bag back down.)

Sable: With Meat Loaf, it was all about the character of Roger McCall. Meat approaches everything he does from a standpoint of full commitment and authenticity, so the initial discussion was all about who Roger was as a character, and what he was all about. I think Meat was attracted to play this character because it involved a complexity he could sink his teeth into, and a mustache on top of that.

Batalion: Literally, on top of his teeth.

Sable: Both Meat and Minnie were fantastic to work with. They both gave it their all, and were fully committed to rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty. And their feet wet. With blood.

Batalion: And that was just to get to the set. In retrospect, that obstacle course was totally unnecessary.

DC: On the name Stage Fright... did you choose it because of the Hitchcock movie, the Italian Giallo, or...? How important is a film title, in your opinion? Some directors are very fervent about preserving titles, while others don't seem to care as long as the movie is out there…

Sable: When we first came up for the title for the movie, I actually hadn’t seen the Michele Soavi film of the same name. But then I did, of course, and thought about changing our title. Which was a bummer because we really thought it was the best title for the movie, especially since it’s a theatre-based horror movie with some throwback sensibility. But THEN, I found out that Soavi’s film wasn’t even the first to use the title--as you point out. So I realized that there seems to be a two-decade-or-so cycle that comes around where you can make a new movie called Stage Fright.

Batalion: Is that true?

Sable: Ya. I checked with Soavi and he said he went through a similar process with Hitchcock.

Batalion: If this interview gets printed, it must be true. I believe everything I read.

Sable: So I look forward to, in twenty years, the next Stage Fright.

Batalion: Shotgun-next-Stage-Fright! Called-it!

(long beat)

Shit. Twenty years’s a long time. (Pause) You guys got a magazine or something? (Reaching for a cigarette) Smoke if I got ’em.

Sable: I told you, you can't smoke here.

Batalion: Shhhhhh, I’m acting.

DC: Let's talk a little bit about the horror aspects of the film... what were some of your influences in creating the killer's look and M.O.? Did you go through a few incarnations before finding the right one, or was it already set in your mind?

Sable: With the music side of the killer, we knew we wanted to musicalize a slasher villain in a fun way, so that meant that we were gonna make the villain verbal, and in many ways it was like, “What would the musical version of a Freddy Krueger-type be like?” The answer we came up with was that he would probably sound like Axl Rose, mixed with a bit of AC/DC and Black Sabbath. Also, Freddy had some great one-liners--

Batalion: “Welcome to prime time, bitch!”

Sable: So we tried to give our killer a similar sense of dark comedy fun, but with musical theatre phrases.

Batalion: “Break a leg, bitch!”

Sable: Yes, except we don’t use “bitch” in our film.

Batalion: True, as an R-rated film with blood, children and adult situations, that type of language could alienate our audience.

Sable: And diminishes the chance of ever getting a Stage Fright ride at Disney.

Batalion: How about "Tragic Mountain"?

Sable: How about "no"? In terms of the look, since the killer hates theatre people, we thought, ‘What is a potentially hate-worthy trait of theatre people?’ And the answer was, ‘Their insistence on reinventing old plays with seemingly random academic ideas, resulting in unintended silliness, and--if you’re lucky--unintended racism.’ So we thought it’d be funny to have the pretentious director claim to be “reinventing” a British mega-musical by setting it in feudal Japan, the result of which is horribly confused and offensive. But which also involves a kabuki mask. So then, when the killer re-appropriates that mask from the show, it becomes a twisted slasher villain’s version of a kabuki mask, which we thought could be fresh.

Batalion: And inadvertently racist by the otherwise ultra-liberal performing arts camp, though intentionally created to be inadvertently racist by us.

Sable: This is very meta.

Batalion: It’s a British "meta-musical."

Sable: I’ve never meta-musical I’ve never hated.

Batalion: Too many negatives.

Sable: Too soon.

DC: What's the enduring appeal of the rock n roll horror musical? They're never been "popular" (except as cult classics, like Phantom of the Paradise or Repo! The Genetic Opera) -- so, what is it as a movie maker that drew you to creating a feature?

Sable: Well it’s hard to say what it was for those other filmmakers you alluded to, but I think in our case it was really a question of creating the kind of forum for us to explore things we like: slasher films, throwback horror, 70‘s rock, and musical comedy...

Batalion: Leotards...

Sable: Plus since it was our first feature, we thought it best that it shouldn’t be too popular.

Batalion: A big part of the strategy was: what can we create with the highest production value and the greatest talent to reach the smallest amount of people so that that handful of individuals would be so enthralled by the exclusivity of their viewing experience they would profess their lifelong allegiance to us and offer us their day-to-day servitude . There was a lot of business thinking that went into this, and as you can see by the young man currently giving me a foot rub under the table, it’s working.

Sable (looking under the table): Oh SHIT! Hahaha! Nice.

DC: What's your own personal favorite song in the movie, and why?

Sable: I like “Exit Stage Fright”, the song that plays over the final credits, because it’s a medley of a lot of the songs from the film, but metallicized in a kind of punk rock way, or at least pop punk. And the outro riff is our own little homage to Pink Floyd.

Batalion: Bonne homage.

Sable: Merci, à toi aussi.

Batalion: Merci. No, but seriously, I have been meaning to ask: who is Pink Floyd?

Sable: Whatever you want him to be.

DC: What are your future plans for Stage Fright --? A live show, or perhaps a sequel?

Sable: Hmm... maybe a spin-off reality show with Thomas Alderson, who plays David Martin, the flamboyant stage manager character.

Batalion: The Real Stage Managers of Manhattan.

Sable: So You Think You Can Manage Stage?

Batalion: The Voice.

Sable: They have that already.

Batalion: American Ido-

Sable: Just stop.

DC: What's coming up for you, after this?

Sable: The most immediate thing coming up is our segment for the letter ‘V’ in “The ABCs of Death 2.” I directed it from a script I wrote with Nicholas Musurca, the editor of The Legend of Beaver Dam and Stage Fright.

Batalion: I thought you said after this we could go get PinkBerry?

Sable: Yes, but that’s in 15 minutes. Don’t you get my iCal alerts?

Batalion: I do, but it’s so much better when it comes from you, and when you vibrate when you tell me.

Sable: You’re going to not include this kind of stuff in the interview, right? I figured, yeah, you’ll just focus on the substance, not really get at the dynamics of our relationship? OK, ok, good. Yeah, people should not read about that. Cool, thanks so much.

DC: Thanks, guys!

The film is currently available on iTunes / VOD and will be in theaters May 9th, 2014.

Stage Fright tells the story of a posh musical theater camp terrorized by a killer who hates musicals. Driver plays Kylie Swanson, a haunted star of the Broadway stage and mother of two siblings who find themselves at the center of the unfolding horror at the camp. Meat Loaf plays Roger McCall, a slumming Broadway producer-turned-camp director.

Nobody gets genre material like Tony Valenzuela. He embodies the entrepreneurial creative voice that will help us to re-invent content and how it gets to a 21st Century consumer, and we’re ecstatic to provide him the resources to build his brand and channel.”

New Poster Seeks RepentanceThe thriller Repentance boasts a strong cast of big name stars, led by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker; yet, even that didn't help it get a theatrical release. Don't worry, though; we'll all be able to dig it from the comforts of our own home soon enough!

From the Press Release
Buried secrets are painfully revealed in the disturbing thriller Repentance, arriving on DVD (plus Digital UltraViolet) on June 24 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Codeblack Films. The film will be available two weeks earlier on Digital HD, Video On Demand, and Pay-Per-View on June 10.

Oscar® winner Forest Whitaker (Best Actor, The Last King of Scotland, 2006) leads an all-star cast as a mentally unstable man whose delusions target his spiritual advisor. The film also stars Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Hurt Locker), Mike Epps (The Hangover Part III, upcoming Nina), Nicole Ari Parker (TV's "Revolution," TV's "Real Husbands of Hollywood"), and Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man Holiday, Something New).

An earnest life-coach/author, Thomas Carter (Mackie) is mysteriously abducted by a deranged client, Angel Sanchez (Whitaker), who delves into Thomas' teachings and uses his spiritual messages of Karma - action and reaction - against him to terrorize him and his family for their past sins.

The Repentance DVD includes a "making of" featurette and will be available for the suggested retail price of $26.98.

Found Footage 3D Makes First Casting Announcement

Jessica Perrin Found Footage 3D Makes First Casting AnnouncementEarlier this year we told you about a film called Found Footage 3D, which is being produced by Texas Chain Saw Massacre co-creator Kim Henkel, and is set to turn the horror genre on its head. Today comes the first casting announcement for the flick, as it nears the start of production.

From the Press Release
A month before rolling camera on the meta horror film Found Footage 3D, the filmmakers are pleased to announce their first cast member: Austin native Jessica Perrin, who will assume the role of Lily, the awestruck production assistant.

FF3D tells the story of a film crew who travel to a remote cabin in the woods to shoot a 3D found footage horror film, but get more than they bargained for when the evil entity they created for their film starts showing up in their behind-the-scenes footage.

Jessica was one of the first people seen for this role two months ago. Writer/director Steven DeGennaro deliberately chose one of the hardest scenes in the script for this audition, and Jessica’s audition video was head and shoulders above all the others. Says DeGennaro, “It was so good that if she’d shot it in 3D, we could’ve literally dropped the scene into the finished movie as is.” He adds, “We went on to audition almost 200 actresses for this part, but even after direction none of them came close to pulling off what Jessica was able to do right out of the gate. Jessica is going to be a huge star, and we’re all really looking forward to working with her.”

FF3D begins shooting in Gonzales, TX, in late May.

New Trailer Takes Us Further Into the Mind of AnnaFormerly titled Mindscape, the Jaume Collet-Serra produced flick Anna is headed our way this summer, and a new trailer has just come across our desk today. It's pretty similar to the previous one we showed you but is home to enough new footage that it's worth a mention, so check it out!

On VOD and in theaters on June 6th via Vertical Entertainment, the film stars Mark Strong, “American Horror Story’s” Taissa Farmiga, and Brian Cox.

Synopsis
John (Strong) is a recently widowed man with the ability to enter people's memories. In the past John used his abilities to solve criminal cases, but after a stroke during a session gone wrong that left him incapacitated and financially broken, he is but a shell of his former self.

Desperate for an assignment, John asks his superior, Sebastian, for a new job. The case he receives is that of a troubled girl, Anna (Farmiga), who has begun a hunger strike. While the parameters of the job seem quite simple, Anna proves to be much more challenging than John expected. She's intelligent, insightful… and possibly one of the most conniving and manipulative people that he's come across in his career.

As John delves deeper into her memories to discover the reason for her hunger strike, everyone surrounding Anna's life becomes a suspect - her family, her nurse, even his old mentor Sebastian himself.

Weinstein Company Puts Halloween 3D Back on the Radar

Weinstein Company Puts Halloween 3D Back on the RadarA sequel to Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 has been talked about and even worked on for several years now, though it's been a long time since we've heard a peep about Michael Myers' return to the big screen. At long last, that silence has been broken. Read on!

As exclusively reported by Bloody Disgusting, news coming out of Cannes is that the Weinsteins are looking to finally get Halloween 3D off the ground, though that's all we know for now. Last we heard, Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine 3D) had penned a script, but your guess is as good as ours, as to whether or not that's the one that will find its way in front of cameras.

We also have no way of knowing if this is going to be a direct sequel to Zombie's films or an entirely new vision, but either way, I suppose it's nice to hear that Michael Myers has still got some more slashing left in him, eh?

What would you like to see from Halloween 3D? Comment below and let us know!
