The Horrors of Tribeca - Part 2: Preservation, An Honest Liar, Extraterrestrial, The Body, and One Please

The Horrors of Tribeca - Part 2: Preservation, An Honest Liar, Extraterrestrial, The Body, and One PleaseAnd Tribeca Film Festival 2014 is a wrap! While we put together our interview footage and write up some full reviews, let's dive back into our mini reviews so you'll know what movies to watch for as they nab distribution.

Preservation - directed by Christopher Denham (USA)
A disgruntled vet, his work-obsessed brother and his somewhat timid wife trek into an off limits nature preserve to live off the land, hunt with their dog... and fight for their lives!! And that's pretty much the whole plot.

The film takes a great deal of time at the front end setting up every little thing that unfolds in the back end but fails to flesh out likable characters you'll not want to see killed or present villains that elicit any emotion from the viewer whatsoever. Offering nothing new to a sub-genre that has plenty of titles to choose from, Preservation should be left out to rot.

1 out of 5

An Honest Liar - directed by Tyler Measom and Justin Weinstein (USA)
"The Amazing" Randi aspired to be a magician rivaling Harry Houdini himself and accomplished just that before his life took a very different turn. Using his considerable gifts of deception and showmanship to reveal those who would deceive maliciously, James Randi becomes a name that strikes terror into the hearts of faith healers, possessed prophets and just about anyone claiming their "psychic powers" make them special enough to free you from your hard earned cash.

This is Randi's story, from escape artist to high profile debunker, told with a startling level of honesty toward his own profession and life while covering his highly entertaining exploits. It's an incredibly sweet tale you won't soon forget.

4 out of 5

Extraterrestrial - directed by Colin Minihan (Canada)
I'll admit to going into this film with very low expectations, having strongly disliked Grave Encounters. Extraterrestrial introduced me to a foursome of young, would-be partiers with very little chemistry among them, flanked by superior actors who aren't given much to do. What held my attention for the duration were some killer alien abduction/space ship/alien creature effects which seemed to perform waaaaaay beyond the film's ability to support them. You've got these pretty fantastic visuals as backdrop to a hackneyed message that "love conquers all," a theme that is soon after pissed all over by the angry filmmakers, who seem hell-bent on proving why they call themselves "The Vicious Brothers." In truth, there is very little that is vicious in this film... or scary... or even surprising, but those spaceships sure were pretty!

2 out of 5

The Body (Short) - directed by Paul Davis (UK)
Our favorite tortured Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) from "Game of Thrones" dons the apathetic, poorly socialized, borderline monstrous demeanor of a highly active serial killer who could quite literally get away with murder amid the faux creeps wandering the streets on Halloween night. Though a bit one note (it IS a short so we can forgive this), The Body proves to be packed with charm, dark wit and some rather sudden ultra violence that will leave any horror superfan smiling from ear to ear.

3 1/2 out of 5

One Please (Short) - directed by Jesse Burks (USA)
Freaky... Horrific... Wildly Imaginative. One Please offers a glimpse into an almost overly normal town, seemingly ripped from a Norman Rockwell painting, where a child's treat is paid for in a most ghastly currency. The stark contrast between the retro feel and bloody happenings is delightfully pleasing and highly palatable for fans of dark fairy tales. Seek this one out!

Not understanding what is happening to her and the suffering that this strange disease causes her makes her take shelter within a world of Our Fathers and Holy Marys.

Montse works as a seamstress, and her only link to reality is her sister, a girl who will soon no longer be a girl. One day, the chain is broken when Carlos (HUGO SILVA), an irresponsible young neighbor, is misfortunate enough to stumble down the stairwell and looks for help at the only door he was able to drag himself to.

Montse takes him in.

Tricia Helfer Set to Star in New Syfy Original Event Series AscensionBack in March we learned that Syfy is bringing us the six-hour miniseries "Ascension" later this year, and now word has come as to who will be starring in it. Yes, it mostly sci-fi, but considering the talent involved, we figured you'd want to at least hear about it.

From the Press Release:
Syfy today announced that Tricia Helfer (pictured), who played the humanoid Cylon “Number Six” in the iconic award-winning series "Battlestar Galactica," will star in the channel’s new original, six-hour event series "Ascension."

Helfer will play the beautiful, manipulative, and dangerous “Viondra Denniger.” Viondra regards herself as a not-so-secret power broker aboard the Ascension. As the Captain’s wife, Viondra is afforded a position of power and privilege, which she leverages as the Ship’s Chief Steward.

In 1963 the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women, and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, the mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.

"Ascension" is an ambitious original drama created and written by Philip Levens ("Smallville"), who will serve as executive producer and showrunner. The series will be produced in Montreal, QC, by Sea to Sky Studios in association with Blumhouse Productions. Jason Blum (Stranded, "The River," film franchises Paranormal Activity and The Purge) and Mark Stern are executive producers on the project along with Ivan Fecan, Tim Gamble, and Brett Burlock on behalf of Sea to Sky Studios. The event series will be co-financed and distributed by Universal Cable Productions and Lionsgate Television.

"Ascension" is slated to launch in November 2014 and air through December.

Set Visit Coverage: David Woodruff and Dave Elsey Talk Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs

Set Visit Coverage: David Woodruff and Dave Elsey Talk Fire City: The Interpreter of SignsIt’s not every day you get to interview an Academy Award winner while wearing a demon hat. Well… actually it is, for me. I love my job!

Dread Central sent me to the set of Fire City: Interpreter of Signs to chat with cast and crew. It’s the directorial debut of monster master Tom Woodruff, Jr., and he’s got his own junior, David Woodruff, following in his F/X footsteps.

Along for the ride into the depths of hell is makeup/effects artist Dave Elsey (The Wolfman, 2010 Academy Award - Best Achievement in Makeup).

Dread Central: So how did each of you hear about Fire City initially?

David Woodruff: Well, when they started the project, they went over to my dad's studio ADI to do the creature for the first of what was then, three years ago I believe, supposed to be a web series. And then his first time directing with these guys was for King of Miseries, which was a short that was a one- to two-day project that I came into to do makeup for and then from there I formed a relationship with the guys and they asked me on the feature.

    DC: And yourself?

Dave Elsey: Well, I talked about the project a little bit with Tom Woodruff who I've known for a long while and but not in terms of really doing the film, and we talked generally of it happening and what he was trying to do and I literally got a random email from Tom saying would you like to do one of the makeups and I said yeah absolutely because I knew what Tom was trying to achieve and you know what he was trying to do with this film, and I just wanted to be involved and to help him out. I didn't realize at the time that it was gonna be Vine, the main makeup. I didn't actually realize that until I turned up and realized that I volunteered for the whole movie and not just one day.

DC: Oh boy. So how’s it going so far? You are like two weeks through shooting.

DE: Yeah it is actually going really well, and the makeup is going really well and Tobias the actor is fantastic to work with. Everybody is fantastic to work with and it has been a lot of fun. And you know that was the main thing because we are basically working all night every night on this thing you know, six days a week. And if it wasn't fun it would be horrible. I've done a few jobs like that before where it’s been hideous. But this is actually every night we come in, we do it, we do the makeup, we get it done and have a laugh, and I've got to say the results [are] looking really great on film. I think Tom is doing a fantastic job of making everything look as good as it can and as you would expect from somebody with his background.

DC: How have the creatures evolved or been modified since you first heard about the project to what you are actually shooting?

DW: Umm you know, not much honestly. I think they had a plan coming in of what they wanted and we knew some stuff that we could repurpose at ADI and kind of piece together some of these creatures so they really had a plan of what they wanted. I think they might have even gone through and looked at extra stuff that we had or pieces that we could put together and wrote some of the characters around stuff that we had access to, I believe that is what I heard but they changed very little from that concept initially.

DC: Can you talk a little about Vine's look in this film and how it sort of makes him embody the character?

DE: Well I had previously only seen illustrations of the character and we did a quick makeup test just before we started on it and it went really well. And this is the first makeup in about twenty-five years that I didn't design... but of course I'm happy to do that because it is Tom and I just know it is gonna be good and everything is gonna work and it is gonna go together. So, so far it has been going great. Like I said, I didn't come to this project really knowing an awful lot about it except that Tom was involved; that was my gateway into it. But having said that, now that I am involved I can't wait to see it.

DC: Yeah, the creatures look really scary, and they look sort of, you know, like the “Bosch” style old school demons. But is that what audiences want and expect? They want the horns and the teeth and the bone.

DW: Yeah, I think there is a level that they are expecting. I'm really pleased with what we've done and taking that and alternating that and making it fit to the style of this film. You look at a character like Vine and he doesn't have your stereotypical demon horns; he doesn’t have two horns coming out of the top of his head, but what we have done is we have taken this kind of horn aspect and turned it almost into a crown, if you will. There is something very kind of a royal looking [about] his character. I think the other thing is, too, especially gluing down somebody else's makeup, he also had a lot of play room to make it his own. We had a sketch or one, kind of full Photoshop render in the case of Vine, but for the others they had a single sketch or no concept work at all and they kind of designed themselves in the clay.

DE: But I've got to say the beauty of this job is that because of everyone who is involved with it, that’s a strength rather than a weakness because if this was a big budget movie we'd spend months doing millions of designs, going around in circles and arguing about every single look, every single wrinkle, every single face, and we'd probably end up with going back to the very first design again, which is what we normally do, but in this case everybody's main thing is does it look cool and if it looks cool, we go with it. There is no real filter system. So that really frees you up. It’s really nice; it’s been a really pleasant part of the job because I know whatever we do if we think it looks right and think it is exciting to us, and Tom agrees, that’s it. It’s in.

DW: That’s the other thing... just like with Danny, of all people. She's just the interpreter and she's the character the movie is based around and we didn't have her. She was the last person at least that has any demon makeup or outfit that was cast and so it got to the point where I would sit down with a generic face which would be the approximate size of what only we could imagine... And we brought Danny in the Wednesday before we shot, so I think that was four or five days before we shot. We brought her in to life cast her and we had this rough clay sculpture that we had essentially matched on her face to guarantee a better and proper fit. But that was the extent of that design. We had this roughed out concept and we got Danny in and we got this five days before. We did a one-day sculpture that matched the direction we were going in, and we came in with that makeup. I think when you are stuck with that kind of a time constraint and that open of a design aspect it is an opportunity to be more creative than you would have on something else.

DC: Are you guys also doing the blood and gore effects too, or is that someone else?

    DW: Yes!

DE: I'm just staying to one character, but David is doing everything else.

DW: Yeah, I'm kind of heading the show for the first time. Hit the ground running I guess. I think the human gore is very minimal in this one. We did have a death that was very graphic; there was one human death. I don't know how much we wanna say about that.

DE: But it was so beautifully shot though. I was looking at the frame - it's what we shot last night, right?

DW: No, this was ah... Maria's death... the throat gag that we did. We had to have somebody's throat torn out and we had a blood gag underneath you know so it's running blood down her face and the way that was shot was fantastic too and just because of the pieces themselves we had to have Danny step in. There is so much going on in this one scene - it's where we are introduced to the transition between the human and demon world and what humans can and can't see so we went from our human Cornelia (actress Mary-Margaret Humes) to Danny. In this sequence Mary-Margaret is there to initially slash out the throat, and then we cut to the character of Maria. We start at her face and then we come down and we see that she is bleeding out and there's this gaping wound in her neck. We cut back and it's Danny in full demon makeup dropping this piece of larynx on the table... we made it bleed right out of the trachea I believe so Danny is able to reach in and pinch that shut. And we watch Maria die from lack of oxygen; it’s not because she is bleeding out but it’s because she can't breathe. Like she's being choked from the inside. And that was great because we got to take advantage of a couple of background characters and for Maria's throat we are able to take advantage of another FX expert who has been in the business for years; his name is Roland Blankaflore of RBFX. And he has done an entire line of custom generic foam rubber appliances that are just made to fit anybody. We didn’t have anybody cast for Maria for a while and it’s a pretty generic throat gag, and at that time we just finished and started preparing his ripped-out throats. And we went over and took a look at his catalog and yeah, perfect timing !
We picked up that and picked up a couple pieces for our demons later in the club sequence. But that is just a fantastic library to pull from; until he started that under a year ago, that wasn't an option for people. They would be scrounging or something so we had a brilliant quality bloody professional piece to do that effect.

The latest announcement comes courtesy of Cinedigm and Rapid Eye Films who are looking to increase their genre output. Read on for details.

    From the Press Release
Cinedigm Corp. (NASDAQ: CIDM) and Rapid Eye Film announced today they have entered into a multi-picture distribution and production output deal for North America encompassing 15 films. Rapid Eye Film (REF) will produce, co-produce or acquire three to four genre-centric films per year. Cinedigm will handle the theatrical and home entertainment release and distribution strategy for each picture, with REF producing and managing the marketing.

The deal provides REF guaranteed distribution for the films across all platforms, and provides Cinedigm a steady slate of independent genre films, including science fiction and suspense thrillers. Cinedigm will be involved in all stages of production.

Filmmaker Marco Weber created Rapid Eye Film with the mandate to produce and distribute elevated genre fare. Recently, the company released the low budget feature CALIFORNIA SCHEMING (written and directed by Weber), starring Gia Mantegna and Chad Lowe.

“This deal signifies a critical shift in Cinedigm’s content and distribution strategy,” said Bill Sondheim, President of Cinedigm Entertainment. “We are now one of the industry's strongest independent distribution businesses, with unparalleled mass merchant physical capabilities, along with strong theatrical and digital expertise. Leveraging these potent attributes - along with our growing cable and broadcast reach –allows us to acquire productions with higher profile casts in commercially popular genres. Marco and Rapid Eye really understand this marketplace making them ideal partners to bolster Cinedigm’s mainstreaming approach and to provide us with a robust pipeline of genre content.”

“To be appointed the genre label for one of the strongest independent distributors in the industry marks an important step for REF. Cinedigm’s commitment towards these films’ budgets as well as its significant release and P&A support will make this a real alternative for any genre filmmaker and talent with a unique idea,” said Weber. “This deal will enable us to take advantage of digital filmmaking on the production side as well as on the distribution side. I am looking forward to working with Bill and Cinedigm’s entire team to make a significant impact on our targeted audience.”

Weber is a veteran filmmaker who has produced a number of high profile films including IGBY GOES DOWN with Kieran Culkin, Clare Danes, Susan Sarandon, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum; THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR starring Craig Bierko and Grethchen Mol; UNTHINKABLE with Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie-Anne Moss; THE INFORMERS with Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder and Mickey Rourke, and FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN with Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Julia Roberts.

Weber and attorney Paul Mayersohn of Surpin and Mayersohn negotiated the deal with Yolanda Macias, EVP Acquisitions, negotiating for Cinedigm.

DVD and Blu-ray Release Allows You to Escape from TomorrowOne of the most talked about films from last year was Randy Moore's nightmarish Escape from Tomorrow (review), is available now on DVD and Blu-ray and we have your chance to score a signed poster and a DVD!

To enter for your chance to win, just send us an email at contests@dreadcentral.com including your FULL NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS. We’ll take care of the rest.

This contest will end on at 12:01 AM PT on May 8th.

    From the Press Release
Featured in IndieWire’s top 5 first features of 2013, and called “a cult classic in the making” (Salon), Escape from Tomorrow comes to DVD and Blu-Ray April 29 from Cinedigm.

Unlike any film ever made, the most buzzed about debut at Sundance 2013 enraptured audiences with the fearless methods used by its writer/director Randy Moore along with its compelling take on childhood fantasy gone awry. Secretly shot at two world-famous theme parks, Escape from Tomorrow uses covert techniques that take guerrilla filming to another level, placing it amongst one of the most revolutionary films in history.

Celebrated by ScreenCrush as one of the best movies of the year and called a “sneakily subversive exercise in low-budget surrealism and anti-corporate satire” (Variety), Escape from Tomorrow takes place in a fantasyland of deliberately crafted childhood dreams. When family man Jim vacations with his wife and children, he is invaded by nightmares in the guise of princesses, happy theme park rides, and fellow tourists. With a backdrop familiar to all audiences as a setting where fairy tales become real, his world suddenly comes crashing down as these enchanting figures eerily turn into horrific characters threatening his very life.

Filled with “stunningly beautiful compositions made all the more impressive by the difficult circumstances of the shooting” (Los Angeles Times), Escape from Tomorrow on DVD features exclusive commentary, including one in which Jim recounts his adventure first-hand, along with a fascinating, must-see look at the making of the film.

    Synopsis
The most provocative film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, Escape from Tomorrow should not exist, and yet it does. Like nothing you've ever seen, Randy Moore's directorial debut is a bold and ingenious trip into the happiest place on earth. An epic battle begins when a middle-aged American husband and father of two learns that he has lost his job. Keeping the news from his nagging wife and wound-up children, he packs up the family and embarks on a full day of park hopping amid enchanted castles and fairytale princesses.

Soon, the manufactured mirth of the fantasyland around him begins to haunt his subconscious. An idyllic family vacation quickly unravels into a surrealist nightmare of paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy teenage Parisians. Chillingly shot in black and white, Escape from Tomorrow dissects the mythology of artificial perfection while subversively attacking our culture's obsession with mass entertainment.
