Director Paul Hyett Dives into Rabid Dog Flick The PoolAround this time last year we learned that Cujo has found itself on the remake chopping block, though we've heard little about the project since then. If you're hungry for some violent dog-on-human action, and don't want to wait, then have no fear, because Cujo isn't the only rabid canine in town!

Screen Daily reports that UK sales outfit The Salt Company has boarded international rights to horror flick The Pool, with Paul Hyett (The Seasoning House) attached to direct. Johannes Roberts and Ernest Riera wrote the script, with revisions by Hyett, Conal Palmer and Steven Lally.

Set to be produced by Tim Dennison of Tall Man Films, The Pool follows a pool party at a luxury cliff top location that becomes a desperate fight for survival when the beloved family dog turns rabid.

In addition to directing, Hyett is also handling the makeup effects. He has previously worked in the makeup department on films like The Descent, Eden Lake and The Woman in Black.

The Pool is due to start shoot in autumn 2014 in Puerto Rico.

Executive producers are Peter La Terriere of Platform 9 Pictures, Robert Bevan, Samantha Horley, Cyril Mégret and James Norrie of The Salt Company and Paul Blacknell.

Lars Von Trier to Experience the Real Horrors of Detroit

Lars Von Trier to Experience the Real Horrors of DetroitAs if Detroit hasn't seen enough sadness and trouble over the last year, the feel-good indie filmmaker of the decade, Lars Von Trier (“The Kingdom,” Antichrist, Melancholia), is ready to bring his special brand of cinematic miseries to what once was the great motor city.

Indiewire recently put up a translation of an interview with Von Trier collaborator Kristian Levring from Soundvenue in which he reveals that he and Von Trier (pictured) are working on another film together.

I’ve always thought that Lars would be able to do a fantastic horror movie,” Levring told Lise Ulrich at Danish magazine Soundvenue. “And I’ve told him so many times throughout the years, and in the end he said: ‘I want you to stop talking about it, so I’ll write it for you instead.’”

The flick has the working title of Detroit which may just stick. "It takes place in Detroit, and then there is the wordplay between Detroit and ‘destroyed.’”

Levring said that von Trier began writing the film about a month ago. “It’s about a man fighting his inner demons,” he said. “That doesn’t tell that much, but that’s because we haven’t gotten any further so far.

“it’s real horror.," he added. "Of course, there is a psychological aspect, but it’s a real horror movie. That’s what we’re aiming for, at least.”

Get Your First Look at Wayward Pines with Matt Dillon and M. Night Shyamalan

Get Your First Look at Wayward Pines with Matt Dillon and M. Night ShyamalanWas yesterday's trailer for Fox's upcoming event series "Wayward Pines" just not enough for you? Then how does another 3-1/2-minute look featuring commentary by producer M. Night Shyamalan and star Matt Dillon sound? Dig in!

    Synopsis:
Imagine the perfect American town... beautiful homes, manicured lawns, children playing safely in the streets. Now imagine never being able to leave. You have no communication with the outside world. You think you're going insane. You must be in Wayward Pines.

Based on the best-selling novel Pines by Blake Crouch and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs), "WAYWARD PINES" is the intense new mind-bending event thriller evocative of the classic cult hit “Twin Peaks.”

Secret Service Agent ETHAN BURKE (Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon; Crash, City of Ghosts) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, searching for two missing federal agents. Ethan is the logical choice for the mission. He's one of the best Secret Service agents in the Seattle office. He's also the man who knew missing agent KATE HEWSON (Carla Gugino; Watchmen, “Entourage”) better than anyone. They were partners. They were more than that. Their relationship nearly destroyed Ethan's marriage.

Everything changes when a truck slams into his car and he wakes up in the Wayward Pines Hospital, with the intense and unpredictable NURSE PAM (Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Melissa Leo; The Fighter, “Treme”) at his bedside. It soon appears that Pam may be more interested in harming than healing. She and Ethan grow into deadly rivals, and her role in the town proves much deeper than anyone realizes.

As the mysteries within the town pile up and clash with his own version of recent events, Ethan starts to question his own sanity. He is confronted by the mysterious and charismatic DR. JENKINS (Emmy Award nominee Toby Jones; The Girl, the Harry Potter franchise, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), the psychiatrist who treats him at Wayward Pines Hospital. As he begins to meet some of the local residents, including toymaker HAROLD BALLINGER (Reed Diamond; “24,” Much Ado About Nothing), Ethan forms a bond with BEVERLY (Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee Juliette Lewis; Hysterical Blindness, Cape Fear), a bartender who doesn't mince words and is as wary of Wayward Pines as he is.

Back home in Seattle, Ethan's wife, THERESA BURKE (Shannyn Sossamon; 40 Days and 40 Nights, “How to Make It in America”), a former Secret Service Agent trainee, gets a call from Ethan's boss, ADAM HASSLER (Tim Griffin; “Prime Suspect”). He informs her that early testing shows Ethan was never in the car that was recovered on the side of the road outside of Wayward Pines. They're still investigating. But this isn't enough for Theresa. Along with their teenage son, BEN (Charlie Tahan; The Harvest, Charlie St. Cloud), Theresa sets out on her own search for Ethan.

Meanwhile, Ethan is challenged at every turn by the town's die-hard residents and especially the town's sheriff, SHERIFF ARNOLD POPE (Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard; Crash, Hustle & Flow), who takes offense at a Secret Service agent showing up on his turf and telling him what to do. Ethan believes Pope is out of his mind and visa versa. Ethan's continuing investigation only turns up more and more questions, and each one leads him to the most important question of all: What's wrong with Wayward Pines?

"WAYWARD PINES" is a production of FX Productions. The series is created by Chad Hodge (“The Playboy Club,” “Runaway”) and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Hodge, Donald De Line (Green Lantern, The Italian Job), and Ashwin Rajan (After Earth). Hodge wrote and Shyamalan directed the premiere episode.

"Wayward Pines" will debut sometime in 2015. Keep your eyes on "Wayward Pines" on Fox.com for additional info in the coming months.

Magnet Attracts V/H/S: Viral; First StillThe found footage anthology films V/H/S and V/H/S/2 were met with great acclaim and now the third in the series, V/H/S: Viral, has found itself a very familiar home at Cannes. File this one under no-brainer. Read on for details and the first still!

    From the Press Release
The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that they have acquired US rights to V/H/S: VIRAL, the third installment of the popular horror anthology series. V/H/S: VIRAL features segments from directors Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial), Marcel Sarmiento (ABCs of Death segment "D is for Dogfight"), Gregg Bishop (The Birds of Anger), Justin Benson (Wrecked) and Todd Lincoln (The Apparition). Gary Binkow and Brad Miska produced for Collective Digital Studio and Bloody Disgusting, marking the third collaboration with Magnet on the V/H/S films.

V/H/S: VIRAL's segments include the story of a deranged illusionist who obtains a magical object of great power, a homemade machine that opens a door to a parallel world, teenage skaters that unwillingly become targets of a Mexican death cult ritual, and a sinister, shadowy organization that is tracking a serial killer. The segments are tied together by the story of a group of fame-obsessed teens following a violent car chase in LA that unwittingly become stars of the next internet sensation.

"V/H/S: VIRAL has the strength of its predecessors and continues to break new ground in the genre," said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. "This installment features terrific work from some very talented genre filmmakers."

"We're really excited for audiences to experience the evolution of the VHS brand - and the evolution of male monster genitalia,” said Binkow.

The deal was negotiated by Magnet SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley with Gary Binkow of Collective Digital Studio. Magnet is eyeing a fall release.

Mr. Jones and Me... Writer/Director Karl Mueller Talks About His Debut Film

    $

Mr. Jones and Me... Writer/Director Karl Mueller Talks About His Debut FilmThe creepy new movie Mr. Jones brings a whole new angle to the found footage sub-genre of horror. Recently, writer and director of Mr. Jones, Karl Mueller, sat down with Dread Central to discuss the film.

Mr. Jones (review) is a brilliant looking film, especially on Blu-ray. Mueller talked about how he managed to create such a crisp looking movie. "I’m very pleased with how the look turned out," Mueller said. "Obviously a lot of the credit has to go to my amazing D.P., Mathew Rudenberg. We had a pretty ambitious plan for shooting the movie and not a lot of time to do it in, so Mathew’s ability to move fast but still get it right was absolutely critical. We shot most of the movie on the Arri Alexa, which is an amazing camera. The current wave of digital cameras is particularly useful on horror films because of how they perform in low light conditions—and since a large majority of this movie takes place at night, that’s helpful. We also spent a long time working with a mad genius post production colorist named Jod Soraci. You would be stunned with how you can manipulate a film’s look in post now, particularly with a camera like the Alexa, which captures so much information."

Mr. Jones is a found footage style movie, but Mueller included a camera that would film both front and rear facing at the same time. This gave him not only a fresh idea to put into the film, but also the ability to capture the cameraman's reaction to whatever happens to be going on in front of his lens at any given time. "I don’t really know how we would’ve made the movie without that," Mueller said. "I guess the idea came from how I conceived the style this movie would be shot in. The idea was that the main character, Scott, is actually an accomplished documentary filmmaker. He’s not some high schooler carelessly swinging his iPhone around. He’d put a lot of thought into how he could best capture what he was shooting. Since GoPro’s are pretty much in everybody’s budgetary reach these days, I had the idea that he might build a rig with a small camera facing back at his face while he was shooting stuff. This would both keep him in the story emotionally and give him something to cut away from if he needed to condense time in his 'documentary.' Of course, in reality, it gave ME those tools, which was great."

Mueller continued, "I don’t think I quite realized just how challenging this would be for Jon Foster, who plays Scott. Jon had to actually operate that camera himself, in character. We would cover the scene from the 'forward-facing' camera with our D.P. operating, and then turn around and ask Jon to replicate all the moves so we could cut back and forth seamlessly in the editing room—WHILE also giving his performance. I turned out to be incredibly lucky that Jon is pretty much good at everything and handled this without breaking a sweat."

In addition to the found footage portion of Mr. Jones, there is also a small section that is actually part of the documentary one of the characters is filming. This section is very informative and definitely adds to the story tremendously. "I think it’s a big breath of fresh air when we go to the New York footage and the interviews Scott collects there," Mueller said. "It helped us out in many ways. It opens the movie up a bit, grounding it in the real world, not just the contained world at Scott and Penny’s cabin. And it also lets you sort of build the legend of Mr. Jones up, giving conflicting viewpoints and interpretations on who the guy is and why he does what he does. I could have easily doubled the length of that section and been happy if it wouldn’t have hurt the pacing of the movie.

Mueller uses some very cool angles and unique shots to add flavor to the film. Most notably was a trip to New York City taken by Scott, and also a cup of coffee that looks otherworldly. "Those two shots in particular were actually shot by my editor, Saul Herckis, who did many jobs on this movie, including direct the Second Unit," Mueller said. "The coffee cup shot comes during a section of the movie where Penny is actually shooting the footage, and the New York stuff is all shot by Scott. Saul and I talked a lot about the different filmmaking style each character would have, and the kinds of things they might concentrate on in their environment. Penny is an artist—I thought she’s the kind of person who would find beauty in the mundane, in making everyday things seem weird by looking at them from a different angle. We looked at a couple different films—the most important being a little experimental documentary shot by the late war photojournalist Tim Hetherington—and then Saul and his second unit crew ran around the location and just shot a bunch of stuff like that while I was with the first unit."

"As far as the New York stuff goes," Mueller continued. "Scott is sort of an A.D.D. case who’s all about getting excitement and energy into his stuff. So when Saul happened to be making a trip to New York, he just stole a bunch of footage at various locations, and we threw it onto the hard drive and sped it up."

One thing Mr. Jones does quite well is build tension. Mueller discussed exactly how he was able to do so in such an effective manner. "Yeah, tension and release are pretty much the name of the game in horror movies," Mueller said. "Fifty percent of a movie is sound, and when you’re working on a low budget, sound is your friend. You can tell people a lot of conflicting things about how they should be feeling without them quite realizing it if you do it right. We spent a lot of time on the sound mix here, layering in drones and sound carpets are designed to operate just below your threshold of awareness. You don’t quite know why you’re feeling tense, but you are. At least, that’s the hope."

Mr. Jones is available on Blu-ray and DVD now!

Check Out This Hilarious Evil Child PrankOkay, now this is funny. They say no good deed goes unpunished. That expression could not be more true than in this video. It's a Brazilian practical joke vid from Boom Canal that shows just why you don't help abandoned children.

Check it out below, and let us know if you'll still be willing to help a stranded child sitting by the side of the road.

Also? Have a scare prank you've seen that you think you should share? Then get interactive, kids! We don't bite... well... unless asked. We'll also beat, flog, and bludgeon, too, but that's an entirely different story for another time!

In any event, send us your scare prank at fuckusback@dreadcentral.com. Miguel Prado approved.

Five Star on a Crunchy Horror Roll at Cannes

Five Star on a Crunchy Horror Role at CannesGet ready for a deluge of Cannes news, kids. It was bound to start sooner or later, right? First up is a bevy of new horror titles coming at us from Thailand’s Five Star Production. Read on for all the details you need.

Screen Daily is reporting that Thailand’s Five Star Production has picked up worldwide rights to horror thriller Hong Hoon (pictured right and below).

The film is a contemporary take on a Thai folk tale, directed by Kulp Kaljareuk and starring Ananda Everingham and Thai actress and model Rattanarat “Ploy” Aurthaveekul. The story revolves around a woman who believes she lost her father in an accident, but is approached by a stranger who explains that he died because he had a wax figure made of himself. The Thai belief that such figures should never be made until after death has been explored in several radio dramas, TV series and films.

A member of the third generation of the family that runs the Kantana studios group, Kaljareuk also heads production subsidiary Kantana Motion Pictures. He previously produced short film Loop (2009), starring Everingham, and is making his feature directing debut with Hong Hoon. According to Five Star, the film is a darker and more stylised spin on the thriller that started out as a radio drama produced by Kantana Group founding father Pradit Kaljaruek.

Currently in post-production for release in June, the film is produced by Sasisupa Sungvaribud, who is also managing director of production services company The 6th Element.

Five Star has also sealed a raft of pre-sales on horror title O.T., a feature-length spin-off from its popular 3AM omnibus horror, which was directed by Isara Nadee, Kirati Nakintanon and Patchanon Thammajira. Directed by Nadee, the new feature is scheduled to start shooting in June for release later this year. The film has been sold to Singapore & Malaysia (Clover Film), Taiwan (Deepjoy), Hong Kong & Macau (Passion Entertainment), Indonesia, Philippines and all Indo-Chinese countries (Sound Space).

Five Star is also pre-selling Ghost Coins, a 3D horror directed by Pawat Panangkasiri (In The Shadow Of The Naga).
