The Dead Director Will Never Let Go

$

The Dead Director Will Never Let GoSure, the above headline could be a movie title in and of itself, but who we are talking about is Howard J. Ford (The Dead franchise) and his new film that is tentatively titled Never Let Go. Read on for details.

This one doesn't sound very Dread-worthy, but only time will tell and Ford has proved to be quite the force so we'll keep an eye on it if need be.

From the Press Release
The award-winning director Howard J. Ford, better known for the highly successful and groundbreaking The Dead, distributed through Starz/Anchor Bay, and soon to be released The Dead 2: India, is in pre-production for his latest project, working title Never Let Go and a production date set for mid-September 2014.

The thriller film, in a similar vein to that of Taken, the Bourne series meeting Run Lola Run, follows a single American mother on vacation in a beautiful bustling but unfamiliar land, desperately searching for her missing child following an apparent abduction. Trusting no one, she takes the law into her own hands, stopping at nothing to find her daughter’s abductors and deliver her own form of justice. With classic lost-in-translation vibes of Frantic colliding with topical contemporary themes explored in hits such as "Homeland," as our unlikely heroine weaves her way through the murky backstreets, now wanted for the murder of a local man, her political connections back in the US begin to reveal that there is much more at stake than first meets the eye.

With pre-production under way and location scouting nearly complete, including exotic locations such as Morocco, the search for the film’s star has already begun.

“We need a gem of an actress who can pull off this part,” said Ford. “There is so much talent out there, and in my view not enough strong female leads, and so I want to find the absolute peak of this talent and bring it to the screen in a role that would challenge the very best screen actors.”

Ford’s Never Let Go is very different to what fans have seen from him before and promises to be an "edge of your seat" thriller that grabs audiences and throws them into the plight that is the worst fear of parents everywhere.

Frontières is the first and only co-production market to connect North-America with Europe in an environment focused specifically on genre film production. After two editions in Montreal in 2012 and 2013, it expanded as a trans-Atlantic circuit with an additional edition in Brussels in 2014.

The Frontières International Co-Production Market is an initiative of the Fantasia International Film Festival, in collaboration with Vision-in-Motion and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. The event in Montreal is made possible thanks to the generous support of the MEDIA Mundus program of the European Union, Telefilm Canada and SODEC.

Lost Tim Burton Short Hansel and Gretel Surfaces

Lost Tim Burton Short Hansel and Gretel SurfacesBefore bursting onto the scene with films like Beetlejuice and Batman, Tim Burton directed a handful of short films, many of which have been included as bonus features on the DVD releases of his movies. One short which has never seen release, however, is Burton's take on Hansel and Gretel, which aired only once on the Disney Channel before vanishing forever.

Featuring special effects work by Stephen Chiodo, who went on to direct Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the live-action 45-minute TV movie was apparently deemed too frightening by Disney Channel executives, who ensured that it would never air again after its initial premiere.

Since then the short was thought to be lost, one of the few Tim Burton films that even his most die-hard fans had never seen.

All these years later, a video of the film has finally surfaced over on YouTube, thanks to a fan who managed to capture it on a VHS tape on that night back in 1982.

"This is Burton’s unique, twisted, Burtonesque version of the classic Grimm Fairy Tale featuring an all Asian cast," reads the video's description. "Hansel and Gretel are the two children of a poor toymaker, whose evil stepmother wishes to do away with them to avoid starving. After being intentionally led away in the woods, they come across a gingerbread house attended to by a bizarre, but seemingly nice old hag with a candy cane nose, who turns out to have evil designs for our heroes!"

Check out the newly discovered film below, which serves as an interesting insight into the early talents of a young Tim Burton.

New Sanctuary DVD Is Quite a Conundrum

New Sanctuary DVD is Quite a ConundrumSo yeah, the title of this movie is... well... Quite a Conundrum! Actually, it's Sanctuary: Quite a Conundrum to be exact. What's all the fuss about? Should you see it? Will it be good? All these questions! We're so conflicted! Read on for details.

    From the Press Release
SANCTUARY: QUITE A CONUNDRUM, the indie film that took the festival circuit by storm, garnering both critical and audience acclaim, comes home when Midnight Releasing, the leading purveyor in home entertainment horror, releases the thriller August 26th on DVD, VOD, and digital download.

With a fresh, hot young cast and a story that defies description (we’ll try, though), the winner of numerous festival honors will be available throughout North America via multiple platforms. DVD availability is set to include Walmart and most other retail and rental chains. On the digital side, the film will be available on all major and minor cable VOD channels as well as major internet platforms including iTunes, Amazon Instant, Vudu, Google Play, Xbox Video, Sony Entertainment Network, and others. SRP for the DVD is $14.98.

The directorial debut of Thomas L. Phillips, who also wrote, edited, and produced the film, SANCTUARY: QUITE A CONUNDRUM paints an unforgettable and truly bizarre picture of suburbia – with a brush dipped in blood! BFFs Mimi (Sasha Ramos) and Tabitha (Erin Nicole Cline) are holding a party at Mimi’s house while her father is away on business. Inviting her and Tabitha's boyfriends Dutch (Joe Coffey) and Sean (Chris Greene), Mimi even allows her younger sister, Kylene (Emily Rogers), to invite her boyfriend, Harris (Anthony Rutowicz).

Selected for presentation at over 30 film festivals all over the world, SANCTUARY: QUITE A CONUNDRUM is well on its journey to becoming the next great cult classic. Awards include Winner Best Comedy at the 2012 Chicago Horror Film Festival, Winner Best Feature Film at the 2012 New York International Film Festival, Winner Best Horror/Thriller Feature Film at the 2012 Bare Bones Film Festival, and Winner Best Feature Film at the 2013 World Independent Film Expo.

"The movie is ready for the world to see, and I am ready for the world to see it,” observed Phillips. “Let the reactions and word of mouth begin ‘cause I know for a fact that the word of mouth for a movie such as this will take it to a whole other level."

What starts as a typical pool party soon turns violent when neighbor Mark (John Lucas) shows up unannounced – completely naked and brandishing a gun. Forcing Mimi to admit to their failed tryst, Mark turns the gun on himself and falls dead into the pool. From that flash point starts a nightmarish odyssey for everyone involved. Soon secrets will be divulged, alliances will shift, and friendships will be tested. As the evening wears on, it becomes apparent that someone within their group might have tasted blood before...

Critics have chimed in with their approval of SANCTUARY as well. A Bucket of Corn declared, “It will forever leave a mark on your mind,” while waytooindie.com called the film “appalling, brash, and untamed.”

Legendary Comics proudly presents Annihilator, an original graphic novel odyssey from the extraordinary mind of Grant Morrison. This six-issue series is a subversive sci-fi adventure like no other, brought to life with stunning artwork from Frazer Irving (Judge Dredd, Necronauts).

Washed-up Hollywood screenwriter Ray Spass is caught in a downward spiral of broken relationships, wild parties, and self-destruction. Out of luck and out of chances, he’s one failed script away from fading into obscurity. Little does he know he’s about to write the story of his life.

As his imagination runs rampant, Ray must join forces with his own fictional character Max Nomax on a reality-bending race to stop the entire universe from imploding… without blowing his own mind in the process.

Top 7 Creepiest Props in Horror Films

Top 7 Creepiest Props in Horror FilmsA good, creepy prop can make or break your production. If you get just the right item, you can make it a memorable and powerful addition to your film. In celebration The Monkey's Paw release on Blu-ray and DVD from Scream Factory, which contains a pretty gross prop of its own, we've decided to reminisce about some of our favorites.

Of course we must begin with some honorable mentions. The stickman figures that hung in the woods during The Blair Witch Project became the trademark for the film that scared the hell out of us that long ago summer.

If you pay close attention to Return of the Living Dead, you can see a reanimated half-dog (literally the left-hand side of a dog, bisected for research purposes) in the warehouse of the Uneeda Medical Supply Company. That's gotta get a nod.

Although perhaps more wardrobe than prop, "Buffalo Bill" Jame Gumb's human hair/scalp wig was definitely one to remember, and from "The Walking Dead" Season 4, Episode 9, Herschel's head. Indeed, Herschel's head was attached to Herschel most of the time, but when Michonne came back to the prison and put her sword through it, Herschel's head definitely fell into the prop category.

The Evil Dead - The Book of the Dead
What better item to start this list off with than a tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood containing all types of nasty spells and incantations used for awakening evil? The particular Book of the Dead found in The Evil Dead was called Naturom Demonto (or Necronomicon Ex Mortis in the later movies in the Evil Dead series), a Sumerian version of the book. And to look at the thing, you just know it's got to be evil. With a hideously twisted face on the front and even an ear on the back, this has got to be one of the most memorably grotesque movie props ever.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Part 2 - Nubbins, the Hitchhiker Puppet
As we all know, The Hitchhiker (aka Nubbins Sawyer… is that not the best name ever?!) does not fare very well at the end of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The fact that he's flattened under a tractor trailer pretty much guaranteed the fact that he wouldn't be back for a sequel. But wait! Thanks to the artistic prowess of the Sawyer Clan, Nubbins' parts are reassembled and he returns in Chainsaw 2 in puppet form. Brought to life in a fashion that would make Jim Henson proud, Nubbins' corpse is animated by Chop-Top, his twin brother who was in Vietnam when the events of the first film occurred. In a movie with plenty of iconic lines and imagery, the Nubbins Sawyer puppet fit right in. Dog will hunt!

    Hellraiser - The Lament Configuration
There may be no more legendary or recognizable movie item than The Lament Configuration, the Lemarchand's box used by Pinhead and the Cenobites throughout the Hellraiser series. The small, mysterious puzzle box opens a door across a schism and allows horrific creatures from other dimensions access to ours, thus usually creating a real pain in the ass for the unfortunate individual who uncovered the solution to the box. This infamous little gold-trimmed box sits quietly until accessed, and then it opens the doors to nightmares.

    "Dexter" - Box of Slides
At first this one might not seem so creepy. So, big deal, Dex keeps a box of microscope slides that represent each of his victims… Now, let's say that line again, but instead of starting withm 'So, big deal,' we'll start with 'Oh, my god,' as in, 'Oh, my god, Dexter keeps a box of microscope slides that represent each of his victims!?!' See how when you really look at this item, it becomes something much more sinister than Dexter's likable persona allows us to realize? Indeed, this is a trophy case of a murderer. Yes, the victims Dexter killed were all basically really bad people, but the fact that Dex keeps the slides and lovingly runs his hand along the tops of them as he admires them makes for one creepy collectible.

    Demons (Demoni) - Mask
Director Lamberto Bava needed the perfect mask to get the ball rolling, leading to the insane bloodshed that occurs in Demons, and he found it. The shining, polished silver replica of a demon's face, complete with huge teeth and menacing eyes, made for the perfect prop to begin a demonic apocalypse. From the moment Geretta Geretta donned it and pricked her cheek, you simply had to know that things were going to go bad in a big hurry. And wasn't that certainly the case? Beginning with Geretta's awesome transformation scene and ending with our cities becoming our tombs, the demonic mask in Demons was certainly one to avoid wearing. Your mother always warned you not to try on hats in the store… this would have knocked her bloomers off!

    May - May's Doll Suzie
As lovable as May Dove Canady is as a character, there is one thing about her that just creeps you out, and that's her handmade doll, Suzie. Suzie was made by May's mother, being given to her with the advice, "If you can't find a friend, make one instead." These were words that May really took to heart. And even though May felt Suzie was her best friend, the doll was always her target of rage when things went wrong. Suzie made May make bad choices and do "weird" things. But when the glass case shatters, so does May, setting her on a path of destruction, leaving a trail of bodies (parts) in her wake.

    The Conjuring - Annabelle
The opening scene of The Conjuring introduced us to Annabelle. This doll and the story behind it were so disturbing that she has her own film set to be released later this year. And to top it all off, the Annabelle back story is based on a completely true tale. And not "loosely based" on a true tale either; the tale behind the Annabelle doll is pretty well represented in the film. The real-life Annabelle was actually just a large Raggedy Ann doll, but James Wan and The Conjuring filmmakers decided to make the version of Annabelle that we see in the film quite a bit more chilling than its real-life counterpart. And what about that real-life counterpart? It can still be seen today in the Warrens' supernatural museum.

Exclusive: Chris Sivertson Talks All Cheerleaders Die

Exclusive - Chris Sivertson Talks All Cheerleaders DieCo-director and writer Chris Sivertson took the time to speak with us recently regarding his collaboration with longtime friend and cohort Lucky Mckee for their new film All Cheerleaders Die, which enjoyed its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Dread Central:Can you talk a little about how long the idea for All Cheerleaders Die has been rolling around in both of your heads? Did it just arise from a late night wandering around the USC campus?

Chris Sivertson: We came up with the idea about a year out of film school at USC. We'd been reading indie magazines, seeing how filmmakers were picking up the first DV cameras and making b-movies for very little money. We watched a bunch of those films and decided that it would be a great format to shoot our first feature. Low cost, low risk, freedom to experiment. So we cooked up a simple idea: football players vs. cheerleaders. And it just snowballed from there.

DC: How was everything divided up on set between the two of you? Did one of you focus more on the actors and another on setups, for example? Did you guys decide on what to divvy up beforehand, or did it happen more organically on set?

CS: It really is just a straight collaboration. We both do everything. We're a true team in that sense.

DC: Why decide to reteam and work on All Cheerleaders Die together? Was it just a matter of getting back to your USC roots?

CS: We've collaborated in a variety of capacities since the original Cheerleaders so our creative relationship has been fluid and evolving ever since then. So even though this new one is the biggest collaboration since the original movie, it just felt like a very natural thing to do. We created the universe the movie takes place in together, and that universe has been alive to us ever since. We reference the characters and situations of the original in our everyday conversations. It's never gone away for us. So even though I guess it is going back to our roots, it still feels immediate to me.

DC: It’s interesting that both of you have worked with Jack Ketchum and found success. Did working with such an established writer help or change your process at all and the way you now approach writing?

CS: Definitely. Ketchum is a consummate pro who creates real characters. His prose is lean and has bite. I learned a lot breaking down THE LOST into a screenplay. The first draft was ridiculously long because I wanted to retain everything I loved about the novel. I would bounce drafts off of Ketchum, and he would never fail to offer his honest and brutal opinion. Which was great. That sort of honesty is what informs his writing and makes it so powerful. So yes, it has impacted everything I've done since.

DC:Is this the most amount of fun you’ve had on set up to this point? It’s such a light horror comedy and it’s pretty apparent that the actors were having a blast.

CS: It was a blast, though it's hard to quantify and compare to other experiences because making a movie is almost always fun. Even when things go wrong. And even when the material is very dark. All these different people come together for a period of time and focus all their energy on each shot you're trying to pull off. It is a simultaneously wacky and profound sort of human endeavor. But I also think it's no easier to make a "fun" movie than a dark serious one. This movie had a ton of built-in challenges and took a lot of blood, sweat and tears from a lot folks to pull off. But I'm not complaining at all. The challenge is part of the fun.

DC: Is this version or re-invention even sicker and more outlandish than what you guys first came up with in the late ‘90s?

CS: I'd say so. I don't know that Lucky and I are any more outlandish than we were back then, but hopefully we've gotten better at harnessing our outlandish ideas and getting them up on the screen.

DC: Anything you’re developing, now or is it time to sit on the sidelines for a while?

CS: I'm always developing new material and working on different stories. If all goes according to plan, I'll be making a slasher movie in the near future!

The high school-set comedy horror-thriller was written and directed by Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (The Lost, I Know Who Killed Me). It was produced by Andrew van den Houten (Funeral Kings, The Woman) and Robert Tonino (The Woman, In the Family) for Modernciné and stars Caitlin Stasey (“Reign,” Tomorrow When the War Began), Sianoa Smit-McPhee (“Hung”), and Brooke Butler and introduces Tom Williamson. The executive producer is Arrien Schiltkamp.

Look for the film on VOD and in limited theatres now with a Blu-ray/DVD release on July 22nd.

    Synopsis:
Teenage outsider Maddy (Stasey) is keeping some dark secrets and holding a serious grudge against the captain of the Blackfoot High football team. When Maddy joins the school's elite and powerful cheerleading squad, she convinces her new friends to help inflict her revenge. After a late-night party goes awry, their plans take an unexpected turn for the worst, and all of the girls die. A sinister, supernatural power intervenes, and the girls mysteriously appear at school the next day with a killer new look… and some unusual new appetites.

"Sexy, campy, funny, subversive, angsty, and most importantly fun" (The Hollywood Reporter), ALL CHEERLEADERS DIE is a rebellious horror-comedy that redefines the genre.
