Remember back in January when rumors of a possible "True Blood" movie were floating about? Well, grab your dancing shoes and get ready to do the Bon Temps Boogaloo because it looks like we might be getting a musical instead!

Per the AP, at the "True Blood" season premiere this past Tuesday night in Hollywood, composer Nathan Barr, who has written the instrumental scores for the series' entire seven seasons, said that True Blood: The Musical is indeed in the works.

"This was something that I pitched to HBO and [series creator] Alan Ball,"said Barr, adding that the musical will revolve around protagonist, telepath, and waitress Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed in the HBO series by Anna Paquin. But, Barr added, after seven seasons of twists, turns, and characters for Sookie, it's proven a challenge to trim the saga down.

"I think we're really going to try to return to the roots of the show,"Barr said, adding, "There's no guarantees, but I think the direction we're heading in is really exciting."

"True Blood" co-star Stephen Moyer, who showed off his vocal chops last year on NBC's highly rated live telecast of "The Sound of Music," revealed he helped Barr put together some samples of the "True Blood" musical presented to HBO and Ball.

Barr said he hopes to present a workshop version about a year from now, but he's not looking beyond that. To say this is "Broadway bound" is premature.

If Dawn of the Planet of the Apes can live up to the promise of the trailers we've seen thus far, then we are all in for a real treat when this movie starts monkeying around at our local theatres.

Look for the film on July 11th. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smith-Mcphee, Enrique Muriciano, and Kirk Acevedo. James Franco has a minor cameo.

Lucky Mckee has had his ups and downs with various projects from the criminally underseen The Woods to the success of films like The Woman. With his latest, All Cheerleaders Die, Mckee collaborated with his old college buddy Chris Sivertson to relive their college days by fleshing out a short film to a full feature film filled with cheerful mayhem.

Here’s what Mckee had to say about the film, which is now available on VOD with a Blu-ray/DVD release on July .

Dread Central: Did your success working with Jack Ketchum lean you towards collaborating again this time around with Chris? What advantages do you find in that kind of mutual relationship?

Lucky McKee: Film is, in its essence, a collaborative art. It's a blast to create stories with good brains. Chris and I have collaborated like this since we were teenagers so it's pretty natural at this point. In fact, I'd say that my collaborative relationship with Chris is what paved the way for my work with Ketchum. The major advantage to working with a partner is having someone to call you on bullshit.

DC: Either with Ketchum or Chris, can you recall some moments of contention, or did everything run fairly smoothly between all of you?

LM: Pretty dang smooth. We both have our own ways of doing things, but the key to a good collaboration is to be accommodating to the artists you work with. This goes all the way up and down the line, from actors to crew to producers…everyone. Naturally, there were disagreements, but they always led to better ideas.

DC:Do you look at this film as kind of a fun reset after the intensity of something like Red or The Woman? Were you reminded a lot of your college days and the freedom that can come with that?

LM: Absolutely. It was a great way to see what we had learned since we started making features. Plus, the lighter tone was a relief after so many dark and intense films. It was much needed. It definitely called to mind the spirit of our college endeavors. That "seat of your pants" approach to filmmaking and the continuous experimentation.

DC: It might be somewhat of a sore spot because it didn’t get the treatment it deserved, but The Woods is definitely my favorite film of yours and I still show it to anyone willing. Have you reached a point with how you are working and collaborating now where you can protect yourself from the kind of interference and distribution problems that plagued such a great film?

LM: Hopefully so. It's all about setting boundaries around yourself. You have to have ground rules or things just get wacky. I guess I've just gotten better at setting those rules. The budgets have gotten smaller, but there's more creative control, which is fine by me. The budgets will go up if I keep my work protected and pure. I'm sure of that.

DC: This film definitely seems out of your comfort zone and I laughed when I first got wind of the film and your involvement. Do you think it’s an odd pairing, and do you think your experience on this film has expanded your idea of what you’re capable of as a filmmaker? Did it make you want to venture out even more on the next one?

LM: The whole idea of doing this film was to break outside of the creative box I had put myself in. It certainly has opened up my creativity and freed me up to experiment more with tone and style.

DC: What’s up next for you? You tend to take your time and really develop projects so it seems that you always have a lot of irons in the fire. Personally, I’d love to see another moody Lucky McKee period piece from you.

LM: Lots of irons in the fire, for sure. Developing a film version of the last book I did with Ketchum. That one's called I'M NOT SAM, and I'll be governing the production and overseeing the script. But I'm handing off the directing reins to an exciting new filmmaker by the name of Vanessa Menendez. She's currently storyboarding the living shit out of it, and it's an awesome process to watch come to life. I'm also in the midst of a new screenplay/book with Ketchum that's very exciting but I can't talk about yet. The only thing I can say is that it's very different than anything we've done yet.

The high school-set comedy horror-thriller was written and directed by Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (The Lost, I Know Who Killed Me). It was produced by Andrew van den Houten (Funeral Kings, The Woman) and Robert Tonino (The Woman, In the Family) for Modernciné and stars Caitlin Stasey (“Reign,” Tomorrow When the War Began), Sianoa Smit-McPhee (“Hung”), and Brooke Butler and introduces Tom Williamson. The executive producer is Arrien Schiltkamp.

Douglas Borton’s long out-of-print horror novel Kane, which Unstable Ground recently acquired the film rights to, has just been re-released as an eBook via Borton’s current pen name, NY Times and USA Today best-selling author Michael Prescott.

The title is currently available on Amazon (link below), Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.

The film adaptation, entitled Mark of Kane, is one of the ‘Off-Frontieres’ Selections at Fantasia’s upcoming Frontieres International Co-Production Market. The adaption is co-scripted by Serena Whitney (writer at Dread Central) and Justin McConnell (The Collapsed, Skull World).

Whitney and McConnell also co-produce along with prolific Canadian-producer Avi Federgreen (Still Mine, One Week, High Life). The team is rounded out by two highly-respected genre directors who currently serve as consulting producers: Adam Mason (Blood River, The Devil’s Chair, Broken), and George Mihalka (My Bloody Valentine, 24 Hour Rental). LMN’s original series “The Haunting of” returns for a third season this coming Saturday, June 21st. The 13-episode series follows world-renowned psychic-medium Kim Russo as she shares the experiences of celebrities who have had their lives changed by paranormal events.

Yep, you read that correctly: The next Friday the 13th film will be in 3D. Before you begin ranting, though, remember this... it worked back in 1982, right? The announcement came during Paramount's presentation at CineEurope.

Director David Bruckner (The Signal, V/H/S) is in talks to helm the new film, but nothing has been confirmed as of press time. Friday the 13th 3D, as it is being called for now, will be leaping off of screens and into your lap on November 13, 2015.

Hopefully they'll bring Derek Mears (the only good part about that lackluster Platinum Dunes reboot) back behind the mask.

The grandaddy of all film fests, Fantasia 2014, is set to kick off on July 17th, and we have this year's artwork to share along with the first wave of event and film announcements.

The 18th annual Fantasia International Film Festival is gearing up to take Montreal by storm with three weeks of inspiration and excitement starting July 17 until August 5, 2014. Our full 2014 lineup of programming and special events will be revealed shortly, but in the meantime here’s an early First Wave Announcement of several selected highlights and info to whet your appetite.

For this year’s edition and onwards, Fantasia will be returning to the freshly renovated Concordia Hall Cinema as its main base, which now features an even larger screen, new seating, and upgraded projection and sound.

UNVEILING OUR 2014 POSTER ART: FANTASIA PAYS TRIBUTE TO THREE LEGENDARY FIGURES OF THE FANTASTIC
On May 7 of last year, Ray Harryhausen, filmmaker and stop-motion special effects pioneer, passed away at the age of 92. Mr. Harryhausen created some of the most beloved and innovative fantastic film imagery of all time in such classics as THE 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. He was the last surviving member of a trio of equally famous friends who met in the late 1930s at a science-fiction association and went on to become the founding fathers of modern-day genre invention and appreciation. The other two figures were renowned author Ray Bradbury (FARENHEIT 451, THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES) and journalist Forrest J Ackerman, editor and principal writer of the groundbreaking American genre film magazine FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND and possibly the world's most avid collector of fantasy books and cinema memorabilia. Their friendship evolved over seven decades, in which their affection for each other never diminished as they kept in touch and appeared in their later years at conventions, joyously sharing amazing stories with adoring fans young and old.

Through their work and energy, Harryhausen, Bradbury, and Ackerman have inspired many of the leading figures of genre cinema in recent decades, from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to James Cameron, John Landis, Peter Jackson, Joe Dante, and Tim Burton. In 2005 Ray Harryhausen was the first recipient of Fantasia’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The poster art is also inspired by an old legend from Québecois folklore — La Chasse Galerie (otherwise known as “the Bewitched Canoe”) — in which lumberjacks, far away from their loved ones on New Year’s Eve, struck a deal with the devil to provide them with a means of quick transport over a great distance to their families. The devil obliged in providing them with a flying canoe, which he himself piloted. In the background you can also see the festival’s black horse, itself inspired by another local folktale, the legend of the Cheval Noir. Fantasia has adopted the black horse as its emblematic symbol for the prize awarded by the main jury to the best film. We love the idea of fusing Québec folklore with the roots of modern genre creation and appreciation.

A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR MAMORU OSHII
A towering and truly unique figure in Japanese animation, director Mamoru Oshii will be a recipient of Fantasia’s Lifetime Achievement Award. From pioneering OVAs DALLOS and the haunting ANGEL’S EGG, and of course the beloved PATLABOR series of the 1980s, through the dramatically influential global hit GHOST IN THE SHELL in the mid-’90s to its award-winning sequel and other powerful, pensive works in the new millennium (SKY CRAWLERS, AVALON), Oshii has consistently strived to bring new ideas and in fact a whole new attitude to anime. With his meticulous and idiosyncratic near-future thrillers and dramas, linked by persistent themes, motifs and concerns, Oshii asserts a complex, deeply thoughtful and decidedly adult sensibility — while maintaining the highest technical standards in the field (and hardly confining his efforts to animation). In seeking a path to call his own, Oshii has blazed a trail for fantastic entertainment worldwide to follow.

Mamoru Oshii will be receiving his award on our opening night, July 17, before a special screening of the new HD master of GHOST IN THE SHELL, being re-issued by Manga Entertainment and Anchor Bay Entertainment in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the original manga’s publication. This will be the first time the GITS HD print has been made available outside of Japan, lovingly restored, unadulterated, and awe-inspiring in its beauty.

OPENING FILM: JACKY IN THE KINGDOM OF WOMEN (JACKY AU ROYAUME DES FILLES)
Fantasia 2014 will launch with the Canadian premiere of JACKY IN THE KINGDOM OF WOMEN (Jacky au royaume des filles), a sharp political satire from comic book genius Riad Sattouf (LES BEAUX GOSSES) that took the Rotterdam Film Festival by storm. The new comedy/horror film is directed by Dustin Ferguson and written by Christian Sellers (More Brains: A Return to The Living Dead) and John Klyza. The flick is produced by rocker John Altyn (Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3), who will also provide the theme song, with Wetworks SFX Studios engineering the gore effects.

Cheerleader Camp: To the Death was brought to production company 42nd Street Films by John Klyza as an original production to distribute through his independent releasing label Retrosploitation. “This movie has been in the works in one form or another for quite a long time, but things moved pretty quickly once I dusted it off at the start of the year,” says Klyza.

“The project is a satiric romp with knife-sharp dialogue, and producer John Altyn saw the value in it,” he continues. “Its throwback nature secured both Jen and Ari, who were child actors in 80s horror hits - they’re all grown up now and ready to have a bloody good time at camp with us.”

Synopsis:

Syfy today unveiled the cast of "Z Nation," an all-new zombie series set to debut in the fall. From production company The Asylum, the 13-episode action-horror series depicts the epic struggle to save humanity after a zombie apocalypse.

Harold Perrineau (pictured; "Oz,""Lost") Tom Everett Scott ("Southland,""Beauty and the Beast"), DJ Qualls ("Supernatural"), Michael Welch (the Twilight series), and Kellita Smith ("The Bernie Mac Show") have joined the ensemble drama, currently in production in Spokane, Washington.

In "Z Nation" three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America.

Perrineau will play Hammond, the leader of the group headed west; Scott portrays Garnett, Hammond’s second-in-command; and Qualls plays the role of Citizen Z, a computer hacker who joins the team and helps them navigate the zombie-infested terrain. Welch and Smith are Mack and Addy, respectively, two disparate wanderers drawn to the team – and to each other – by a shared goal: survival.

Rounding out the ensemble are Anastasia Baranova (The Darkness II) as Addy, Russell Hodgkinson (Big Fish) as Doc, and Keith Allan (Rise of the Zombies) as Murphy.

"Z Nation" is a dynamic ensemble action-drama that will plunge viewers into a fully-imagined post-zombie America and take them on an adventure with a diverse group of richly-drawn characters. As the reluctant heroes learn to work as a team and battle ever-more-menacing zombies, their flaws, idiosyncrasies, and moral dilemmas will ultimately become the heart of the show.

Karl Schaefer ("Eerie Indiana," Eureka,""The Dead Zone") serves as executive producer and showrunner. Acclaimed action director John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) will direct the pilot. The series is produced by The Asylum and sold internationally by Dynamic Television.

More casting news has landed across our desk for the latest spooker from Legendary Pictures, titled Spectral, so read on for the latest!

Deadline is reporting that Clayne Crawford has joined the cast as Sergeant Calvin Toll, a focused but short-fused military lifer. Crawford's previous credits include the TV series "24" and "Justified."

He joins the previously announced Cory Hardrict, James Badge Dale, and Max Martini. The flick is being directed by Nic Matthieu.

The premise of the project is centered on a modern-day, militaristic, and gritty approach to fighting the supernatural.

The pitch, which sold for six figures, has been described as a darker and more serious take on a Ghostbusters-like story with a plot that revolves around a special ops group formed to bring down evil ghosts that have taken over Manhattan. Locations and details might change, however.

It's been over 50 years since Herschell Gordon Lewis pioneered the art of the splatter film, and it makes us happy to see he's still doing his thing all these years later. At the ripe old age of 85, the "Godfather of Gore" is readying principal photography on an anthology called BloodMania.

BloodMania is a new anthology film with four distinctively different horror tales, each featuring Herschell Gordon Lewis' brand of splatter. Principal photography begins late July 2014 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Mr. Lewis has written one segment and will direct two of them.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, originator of the “splatter” film genre, both revered and reviled as the “Godfather of Gore,” has expressed strong enthusiasm for BloodMania. “It’s time to get some fresh blood flowing into the happy universe of horror films,” Herschell said. “I’ll be there to be sure it happens, and I can promise that we’ll have enough bloody messes and enough off-the-wall humor to satisfy everyone... even including me.”

Few categories of motion pictures enjoy the perpetual popularity of the genre Herschell Gordon Lewis literally invented half a century ago. The original gore movie, Blood Feast (1963), was as primitive as any movie could be. Yet, it shows in theaters to this day and is a DVD favorite. Herschell’s personal favorite, Two Thousand Maniacs (1964), has a plot line centering on a small U.S. Southern town that “gets even” for that country’s Civil War. Despite what one might or would think is a plot of local interest only, the film has long been an international success, and wherever the director travels – in Canada, the U.S., Europe, or the Far East – he is called on to sing the theme of that movie, which he wrote.

BloodMania, Herschell promises, carries the slasher advantage to a new height. “First of all,” he points out, “we've brought young directors into the slasher arena and given them tools and effects that just didn't exist when we originated the category. BloodMania has four dynamic episodes. I’m directing two of them. The other two are... well, critics will have a difficult time choosing which of those episodes is the most effective because we’re opening wide the gates of effects nobody has seen before.”

James Saito, the Diabolique Films executive of the BloodMania team, who has assumed the challenging job of recruiting major talent, has chosen some well known genre experts for the project. One example is award-winning screenwriter/producer Bob Schultz, whose last two horror films, Mr. Saito points out, have been screened around the world on every continent except Antarctica. Mr. Schultz is writing one of the episodes Mr. Lewis will direct. Each of the other directors will create his or her own episode, and Jim Saito promises a competitive atmosphere that will result in “scenes that blast off the screen.” The promise made by both Herschell Gordon Lewis and James Saito: "BloodMania will set a level of entertainment, shock, and wild humor that will be the benchmark for years to come."

Jim says, "I saw my first Herschell Gordon Lewis movie at a drive-in theater in 1971. It changed the way I looked at horror cinema and was instrumental in shaping me into the gore-hound that I am today. The fact Mr. Lewis has specifically chosen Diabolique Films as the vehicle for a long-awaited new venture is not only thrilling, but a particular honor. Satisfying his legion of fans and introducing his brand of cinema to a new younger audience is a responsibility that we all take very seriously indeed!"

"Salem" Episode 1.10 - "The House of Pain" (airs 6/33/14)
Increase (guest star Stephen Lang) gets closer to understanding who really runs things in Salem. At the same time, Anne (Merchant) finds herself in danger, and in need of Alden's (West) help, while investigating a mystery.

Much ado has been made about who will be directing the long-gestating next installment in the beloved Ghostbusters film franchise, leaving many fans to imagine what the movie would be like if their favorite filmmaker was at the helm.

One of those fans is Lee Hardcastle, who made a name for himself with the ABCs of Death short film "T is for Toilet." A master of the art of claymation, Hardcastle just put together a hilarious little short that imagines a world wherein Quentin Tarantino is hired to direct Ghostbusters 3.

It essentially places the iconic characters into situations ripped straight out of films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill.

As you might imagine, the results are absolutely hilarious, and the claymation trailer is needless to say quite the treat for those who appreciate both Ghostbusters and the uber-violent brand of cinema that Tarantino specializes in. Can't say I ever thought I'd see those two worlds mashed together, but I feel like my life is just a tad bit better now that I have.

We first told you about the "hyper-violent" new film from Latefox Pictures entitled The Demolisher back in February, and today we have over a dozen images and even a sample of the film's soundtrack for ya! Dig it!

The Demolisher is both a character study and a psychological examination of trauma, resulting in an unapologetic portrayal of what can happen when a fragile mind is pushed too far.
