According to the show's website, Ellen has the exclusive trailer for the new Tim Burton film, and it will be aired this Thursday, March 15th.

The ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

Look for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows in theatres in glorious 2D on May 11, 2012.

Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

0

Just when we thought we couldn't get any more excited about the return of "The Vampire Diaries" and, yes, even "The Secret Circle" this coming Thursday night, March 15th, we have a new promo teaser for the pair along with clips from each show.

The Vampire Diaries"The Vampire Diaries" Episode 3.16 "1912" (3/15/12 Air Date; 8:00-9:00 PM):
THE MURDER MYSTERY DEEPENS — The present-day murders in Mystic Falls remind Damon (Ian Somerhalder) of a similar crime spree a century earlier. In flashbacks to 1912, Damon recalls a beautiful vampire, Sage (guest star Cassidy Freeman), who showed him a whole new way to exist.

Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) warns Damon not to get involved in her investigation, but Damon is convinced she’s going after the wrong suspect. Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Matt (Zach Roerig) resort to breaking and entering in their search for evidence to prove Dr. Fell (guest star Torrey Devitto) is a murderer.

For reasons known only to her, Rebekah (guest star Claire Holt) becomes interested in locating one of the town’s oldest landmarks.

Finally, Elena comes to a new understanding of the path her life has taken, and Damon makes an emotional confession to Stefan (Paul Wesley).

Lindsey Garrett also guest stars in the episode directed by John Behring and written by Julie Plec and Elisabeth R. Finch.

The Secret Circle"The Secret Circle" Episode 1.16 "Lucky" (3/15/12 Air Date; 9:00-10:00 PM):
CASSIE CONFRONTS HER FATHER, DIANA FINDS NEW LOVE, AND FAYE TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH LEE — Cassie (Britt Robertson) catches Blackwell (guest star Joe Lando) sneaking around the abandoned house. After confiding in Adam (Thomas Dekker), he tells her he knows Blackwell was looking for a device to drain witches’ powers and is clearly back to his old ways.

Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) shows up at Lee’s (guest star Grey Damon) house to invite him to the school fundraiser but is taken aback when Eva (guest star Alexia Fast) greets her at the door claiming to be Lee’s girlfriend.

Meanwhile Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) encourages Diana (Shelley Hennig) to date a normal guy and points her in the direction of a new, handsome guy in town (guest star Tim Phillipps).

Dawn (Natasha Henstridge) runs into Blackwell at the school, but the reunion isn’t quite what she expected.

Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Katie Wech.

Exclusive Interview: Drew Daywalt Talks Leprechaun's Revenge and More

0
0

On Saturday, March 17th, Syfy is set to debut Drew Daywalt’s latest feature film, Leprechaun’s Revenge, and in honor of the occasion Dread Central recently had the chance to catch up with Daywalt to get the lowdown on the project.

In our interview Daywalt discusses working on Leprechaun’s Revenge, explains the challenges and importance of making a "practical" creature feature and sets the record straight on the film’s recent title change as well.

Read on for our chat with Daywalt, and make sure to check out Leprechaun’s Revenge when it debuts this Saturday on the Syfy network.

Exclusive Interview: Drew Daywalt Talks Leprechaun's Revenge and More

Dread Central: Can you talk a bit about how you got involved with the project and taking the leap toward horror feature filmmaking?

Drew Daywalt: It's interesting. A lot of horror fans who enjoy my work think this is my first feature film, and in a way they're right as it's my first feature HORROR film. And frankly speaking, it's not even really horror. It's a lighthearted Syfy creature feature. It's more funny than scary. Leprechaun's Revenge was produced by After Dark Film, and I'd been working with them for a while developing another project - a much darker horror piece - when the opportunity to do this lighthearted monster movie came up so we went for it.

DC: I think I remember you mentioning that you worked on the story a bit after coming on board- is that correct? Did you put some Daywalt flair in there to flesh out the story more?

Drew Daywalt: I did. Anthony C. Ferrante wrote the screenplay and did a bang up job of creating the family and the town that's at the core of the film, and when I came on board, he was very gracious in working with me to flesh out the mythology of how this town came to capture a leprechaun and imprison it beneath the roots of an oak tree.

We also worked really hard together to tie the leprechaun in this film to a more realistic Celtic view of leprechauns, which painted them as dangerous little woodland goblins. I did the usual director pass with the story, but Anthony did the heavy lifting, for sure. My big contributions came in the mythology and the characters and the creature design.

DC: You have such a great cast in this with a lot of wonderful character actors; can you discuss working with them, and did you encourage them to put their own little touches on the roles while filming?

Drew Daywalt: Since the film wasn't my baby, it was easy to open up and let everyone pitch in with their ideas. As a writer-director, when you give birth to a screenplay, then you live with it and rework it and tinker and finally sell it; it's harder to let people come in at the 11th hour and toy with your work.

But for me, on this one, because I had such great talent as Billy Zane and William Devane and Courtney Halverson, it was actually really easy to let them play. The story centers very strongly around this quirky, dysfunctional family, and they all jumped right in and had a lot of fun with it. We also knew, as a group, that if we tried to play this too serious and not embrace the camp and the silliness of a leprechaun as an antagonistic beast, then we were in for a world of hurt. We had to get ahead of the joke, or we'd become the joke. So at the end of the day, together with the actors, I was able to make a quirky, tongue-in-cheek monster movie. We were aiming for the tone of Tremors or Creepshow or Big Trouble in Little China. Subtle laughs and ridiculous situations, but without being wacky or stupid.

DC: I know you are a huge proponent of using practical effects over CGI and would love to hear more about why that was particularly important on this movie and more about developing the look of the creature and making sure it wasn't a design fans had seen countless times before (which it isn't!).

Drew Daywalt: I knew we wouldn't have the money to do the CGI right. These things never do. But if we were careful, we could make the creature look good if we did it physically. Plus, I'm a horror fan. I'm a fantasy films fan and know what the rest of us know - CGI only works if there's a ton of money and time poured into it. So with our low budget I knew we needed a suit and mask, enhanced later by touches of CGI (facial expressions and blinks and snarls, etc.) so that it would work. Jeff Farley came on board and built a wonderfully impish little devil of a creature based on early designs by Jacob Hair.

Leprechaun's Revenge: Exclusive First Look at the Creature! (click for larger image)

DC: How was production for you?

Drew Daywalt: Production was tough on this one for the entire cast and crew. We had one week of prep and 15 days of shooting. And in that time I had to pull off car chases, a parade with hundreds of extras, dozens of kill f/x, stunts, melee fights, the whole thing. It was a classic case of ten pounds of stuff in a five-pound bag.

I used to be critical of directors on films like this, but now that I've done it, I see that they were up against the wall. Is the film perfect? No. We didn't have the luxury of time or budget to get everything that was asked of us. But what we did capture was a lot of fun in the characters and the story.

DC: How much fun is it to be having the movie premiere now on Syfy for St. Patrick's Day?

Drew Daywalt: I'll be with my cast and crew drinking green beer and making a drinking game of the film with everyone else so I'm very excited. The whole team is. We're very proud of the fun little film we've made despite some ridiculous odds.

DC: A lot of people have been making comparisons between the Warwick Davis series and this movie- do you want to set the record straight for fans?

Drew Daywalt: The comparison is inevitable so I totally understand that, but there's a funny story there. When I came on board, the script was titled St. Patrick's Day so I never saw it as similar to the Warwick Davis Leprechaun films. The story's different, the creature was entirely different, and the concept was that our leprechaun is what a real Celtic goblin from ages past looks and acts like, not a caricature of a Lucky Charms box.

In our film the Lucky Charms style leprechaun is something that people have painted over the years to hide the horrors of what real leprechauns of old were really like. During production the script was retitled Red Clover because no agent in town was going to give their client a script called Leprechaun's Revenge. Not only is it a bad title, but it apes the actual Leprechaun franchise, and not in a good way. But somewhere along the way they changed the title from Red Clover to Leprechaun's Revenge, and now the cast and I have been burdened with having to repeatedly explain that "No, this is not part of the Leprechaun series," and "No, Warwick Davis is not in the film."

All of us feel a little duped at this point, and the audience is seeing right through what's been done and they're not responding to it well either. Unfortunately, the marketing conceit is backfiring on them.

DC: So what's up next for you since I know you’re a guy who likes to keep busy?

Drew Daywalt: I have a couple things lined up, but I'm not allowed to talk about them in detail yet. One is a very dark ghost story that I wrote and will be directing later this year. It's dark and layered and complex. A nice turn from a lighthearted leprechaun creature feature.

Look for the flick on the Syfy Channel on Saturday, March 17th, at 9:00 pm.

Daywalt directs Leprechaun's Revenge written by fellow horror filmmaker Anthony C. Ferrante (Boo!, Scream of the Banshee). Those facing the ire of this little Irish hellraiser terrorizing Cajun country will include Billy Zane (Titanic), William Devane (“24”), relative newcomer Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson (“Death Valley”), Azure Parsons (“Death Valley”), Matty Ferraro (“The Lair”), and actor-stuntman Kevin Mangold.

Synopsis:
Sixty-six years ago the town of Irish Channel in Louisiana was the site of a horrible massacre on St. Patrick's Day. Some blame a terrible storm that blew through the town, but those that were there don't speak of the truth. Due to petty superstitions St. Patrick's Day festivities were banned for the last 66 years, but now the new Mayor wants to tempt fate and celebrate.

But here's a little known fact about Dracula: he is not only the Prince of Darkness; he is also a dad. Over-protective of his teenage daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez), Dracula fabricates tales of elaborate dangers to dissuade her adventurous spirit. As a haven for Mavis, he opens the Hotel Transylvania, where his daughter and some of the world's most famous monsters - Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more - can kick back in safety and peace. Hammer Resurrecting Dracula?

0
0

Though Bela Lugosi usually gets all the love, lots of actors have portrayed the role of the nefarious Count Dracula. Of special note is the portrayal given by Christopher Lee for Hammer, which is widely regarded as the best of them all. Hammer knew what they were doing, and they're now looking to rekindle some long burned out fires.

Our friends over at The Daily Dead recently caught up with Hammer historian, author Marcus Hearn, who reports that the newly relaunched studio has interest in sharpening up the old fangs.

"The company’s chairman, Simon Oakes, is talking about making a new Dracula and setting it in present-day London," says Hearn. "It’s fun to speculate who could step into Christopher Lee’s shoes. Just last year I would probably have dismissed the idea of another Hammer Dracula as quite far-fetched, but I think the success of The Woman in Black has opened up all sorts of possibilities."

Sounds tasty! Keep it here for more.

Teaser Trailer for Stay at Home Dad Milks the Terror

Teaser Trailer for Stay at Home Dad Milks the TerrorSometimes your home life can be even more bizarre than anything you see in any movie, anywhere. Especially if John Skipp, Andrew Kasch, FX legend Mark Shostrom, Cody Goodfellow, and Buz Wallick have anything to say about it. Get ready to get teased in the strangest of ways.

From the Press Release
Today, co-directors John Skipp and Andrew Kasch announced their full-time filmmaking partnership with a 15-second trailer for the short Bizarro horror/comedy Stay At Home Dad. With both screenplay and soundtrack by Cody Goodfellow, the insane premise “starts with a guy with giant boobs, nursing his baby and crying a lot. Then it gets weird from there.”

The jaw-dropping 15-minute film stars Matthew Currie Holmes (Wrong Turn 2), Alisha Seaton (The Fourth Kind), Trent Haaga (Terror Firmer), Richard Grove (Army of Darkness), Diane Goldner (Feast I-III), and Kat Harris (Body Of Proof). Lensed by Buz “Danger” Wallick (Never Sleep Again: The Elm St. Legacy), FX legend Mark Shostrom (Evil Dead II) and his team bring the man-boobs, gore, and other surprises, with a hallucinatory dream sequence designed by Phil Mucci (Opeth’s The Devil’s Orchard) and stop-motion animator Michael Granberry (Robot Chicken).

It’s a family affair for modern Lovecraft pioneer and frequent Skipp collaborator Goodfellow (Spore, Jake’s Wake), whose wife Tori English produced; and their daughter, Madeline, also stars as the baby in question.

But for bestselling-novelist-turned-filmmaker Skipp (The Light at the End, Rose: The Bizarro Zombie Musical) and award-winning filmmaker Kasch (Thirsty, Never Sleep Again: The Elm St. Legacy), it’s the beginning of a multi-picture onslaught. More details soon.

Stay At Home Dad will premiere at the World Horror Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 29-April 1, along with Skipp’s Rose short, Fetching Danny.

Exclusive: I Spit On Your Grave 2010 Sequel Talk and What You Didn’t See!

Exclusive: I Spit On Your Grave 2010 Sequel Talk and What You Didn’t See!We caught up recently with I Spit On Your Grave star Sarah Butler, director Steven R. Monroe and producer Lisa Hansen who weighed in on the status of a potential sequel to their 2010 redux, as well as on the alternate ending to the which remake audiences didn’t see! Read on.

“We are thinking about it,” Cinetel Film’s producer Hansen confirmed for us of a follow-up to filmmaker Monroe’s 2010 gut-punch of a remake of Meir Zarchi’s original 1978 rape-revenge film. “The movie didn’t do well theatrically but it did do really well on DVD, so we are considering it, but until we have a really concrete story that we believe will work and which will deliver to the audience and not be a sell-out, we won’t be going into production. We just aren’t there yet.”

Catching up with director Monroe, who’s busy shooting an unrelated project in Canada, the filmmaker stated of his potential involvement in helming the follow-up to I Spit On Your Grave (review here) (hereafter ISOYG); “There has been discussion with me, but (at present) that is it. It will certainly be a complex one to do a sequel on.”

ISOYG star Sarah Butler, who played the victim-turned-avenger ‘Jennifer Hills’ to great effect in the remake expressed her interest too in revisiting the material when we chatted with her, and also delved into what audiences didn’t see in the redux.

“In the original script that I read the ending found Jennifer back in the city,” revealed Butler, who recently wrapped her role in the psychological thriller The Stranger Inside, of ISOYG, “and that was in the script until probably a couple of days before we started shooting and then they scrapped it. The whole film was actually book-ended with two scenes which took place in the city, and those were scenes between Jennifer and her literary agent.”

“The first one was just kind of exposition,” Butler continued. “It was Jennifer telling her agent that she was going to go work on her next novel in the woods, and I think that scene was somewhat unnecessary because obviously we find out in a matter of minutes that that was what was going to happen, because it does happen.”

Here’s where things become interesting.

“At the very end there was another scene where Jennifer is having another meeting with her agent,” revealed Butler, “where she has previously presented her with a manuscript which she’s read, and they are having a meeting to talk about it. Over the course of the scene you realize that the book Jennifer has written is a true account of her ordeal and everything which she went through. So it kind of ended with the agent taking a phone call or something and being distracted for a moment, and she’s on the phone praising Jennifer saying, ‘Oh wow, this novel will just shock people, and this will really make her as a writer because it’s so mysterious and crazy,’ and that’s when Jennifer puts down Sheriff Storch’s badge on top of the manuscript and leaves and walks down the street. When the agent comes back from her phone call she sees the badge and is shocked (as she realizes that the manuscript isn’t one of fiction).”

It doesn’t end there.

“The very last little bit was Jennifer walking into her apartment and in the manuscript it was completely covered in white plastic from floor to ceiling,” Butler communicated, “and there was a man tied up and hanging from the ceiling, and Jennifer said something like, ‘Honey, I’m home.’”

As for why these scenes weren’t filmed, Butler said, “I honestly think that it was a question of budget as to why we didn’t shoot them, because it would have required another few days to shoot in New York City. They were even trying to make it happen in New Orleans or downtown Shreveport where we were shooting and make it look like New York somehow, but the extra days of shooting would have really bumped the budget up, and so I think initially it was a money decision.”

“In the end though I think it’s good (that it wasn’t shot) because it kept the film so much more true which was important for us in order to retain the fans from the original,” the actress concluded. “Also it seemed like a little cheesy to me, the ‘one-liner’ thing. I mean it could have been played fine, and I could have made it work I am sure, but I am glad that it ended up the way it did. The ending as it is has so much more punch to it, with just having that last shot of Jennifer bringing up that little smile as she listened to Sheriff Storch die.”

Director Monroe concurred.

“Regarding the (alternate) ending scene,” stated the filmmaker, “it was cut before shooting and never really fully written. There was no real meaning or intention with cutting it. It was something that was on the plate that we just didn’t go with, and I love that the remake ends with a mirror to the original. With Jennifer and what appears to be some kind of a smile.”

As for other future Cinetel Films’ horror projects, Hansen teased, “We’ve got scripts in development and I think one that is going to go into production probably late summer, would be my guess. It’s a really good script and I think it will be really good film.”

Stay tuned.

42 Students, Three Days, One Survivor – No Escape. Welcome to the World of Battle Royale!

Battle Royale
In the near future, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The BR Law: Each year, a 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left. Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and screen legend Takeshi Kitano (Boiling Point, Brother) star in the movie that has been argued, acclaimed and banned around the world. More than a decade later, it remains one of the most savage, shocking and emotionally powerful films of all time. Now experience the complete Director’s Cut of Kinji Fukasaku’s uncompromising masterpiece – nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards® – available uncensored and unrated for the first time ever in America.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection
In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed Battle Royale, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of junior high students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel – featuring a new class, new rules and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film’s young survivors – triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world. Now for the first time ever, you can see it all: Experience the entire Battle Royale saga on four discs that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion picture history.

  • SXSW Exclusive Interview: Don Coscarelli Talks John Dies at the End and More

    0
    0

Definitely one of the more anticipated flicks for us here at Dread Central has to be Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and screened last night in Austin during the 2012 SxSW Film Festival, which is currently underway.

Today, Dread had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Coscarelli about his latest project as well as his thoughts on staying independent throughout his career. We also chatted with the Master of Horror about his entire body of work, the issues behind Bubba Nosferatu and a whole bunch more- look for that extensive interview coming this Monday as part of Dread Central’s Indie Horror Month celebration.

In the meantime, read on for more from Coscarelli regarding John Dies at the End and then make sure to head back here on Monday for so much more from one of the most inventive and surprising horror filmmakers of the last 30 years.

Dread Central: So it has been a few years since you were last in the director’s chair on Bubba Ho-Tep; what was it about David’s (writer Wong) novel- John Dies at the End that felt right for your next project?

Don Coscarelli: It’s funny- a ‘robot’ actually led me to John Dies at the End. I had been reading a bunch of books from Bermuda Press and I got one of those ‘robot’ emails from Amazon saying “Oh, you like this book…well then you’ll also like John Dies at the End.” The synopsis was what really intrigued me- a street drug called soy sauce and everything- and I thought it all sounded absolutely great so I ordered it and just fell in love with the story.

But John Dies at the End was the right project for right now for a lot of reasons. First off, the story itself just has so much going on and works on so many levels that were appropriate to me and the kind of stories I like to tell as a director. On the surface, it’s an interesting adventure about these two friends but on the second level, the story is also about this psychoactive drug and the effects it’s having on the world at large. Thirdly, it’s about inter-dimensional travel and fourth, it’s also about the evil at the center of the universe. There are all these levels interwoven and I thought that was an interesting, contemporary take on all these themes.

I really love David’s work because I feel like he’s got this great voice- a voice that speaks for this generation- and he’s got such a great understanding of the world and culture right now. There are elements in this story that I don’t think I could have written myself because there’s almost this apathetic quality to the two main characters; they see really weird stuff and they just kind of respond to it all in a very underwhelming sort of way, kind of like “oh, okay…that was weird. Let’s move on.” Most of us would be freaking out at what these guys are seeing but not them- nothing fazes them.

Having kids that age myself, I kind of see that sort of nonchalant kind of attitude in the youth culture of today so I really responded to the fresh approach and attitude David took when putting together all these elements in the novel because it was all right up my alley.

DC: Did David work with you at all while you were fleshing out the screenplay?

Don Coscarelli: I worked on the screenplay myself but in retrospect, I think it would have been really cool to have been able to work with him because I’ve now gotten to know David and I really like him a lot; at the time, I only had limited funds so I bought the rights and developed the screenplay from there. But David’s an incredibly talented guy and a brilliant writer.

DC: Even though you’ve always been an independent filmmaker, did you go to the studios at all when you were putting John Dies at the End together?

Don Coscarelli: I did in fact go to the studios for John Dies but was quickly slapped down by everybody. I kept hearing over and over that this was not the type of movie that studios made and that no major company would ever want to put major dollars behind the script too. I was actually kind of surprised- even though the story is definitely ‘out there,’ there are still a lot of traditional-style elements going on too that I thought Hollywood might embrace if they just gave it a shot.

But if a studio HAD made John Dies, they would have had to water down all of these great elements that David crafted into his original story so that the movie could appeal to the widest audience possible and it’s kind of depressing to think about that’s how so many movies get made- because they’ve been watered down enough to be consumable by the biggest audience possible. That’s not the route I like to go as a filmmaker so had this been a studio movie, it would probably a completely different movie altogether.

It’s actually kind of funny, maybe sad too, but I did see coverage by a studio about this movie and the person really ‘got’ the book- they seemed like they understood all of the themes and the feel of it and praised all of its fascinating elements. But once I got the last paragraph, they said “And this is exactly why a studio can never make this kind of movie. It’s almost too interesting.”

DC: Well, making a movie on your own terms has its perks too- especially creative freedom. It has to be somewhat satisfying to know that the independent approach for John Dies was the right way to go, considering the great responses the film has been getting so far during your festival screenings.

Don Coscarelli: Oh absolutely! That was the truly great thing about John Dies at the End- I had complete creative freedom on this; there was no one to answer to on it which was wonderful. But at the same time, I also gave myself enough rope to hang myself with too in case this didn’t all come together (laughs). I’m kidding, of course- I’m so incredibly happy with how the movie has turned out and the fan responses throughout the festival run has been just amazing. It just feels great that so many people love what we’ve all worked so hard on for the last couple of years.

Look for more from Coscarelli on Monday, March 19th as part of Dread Central’s Indie Horror Month celebration!
