Constantine Banner Works Its Magic On the Comic-Con Floor"Constantine" is almost upon us, and so it's unsurprising to see the NBC series taking up a presence at Comic-Con. Come on inside and check out star Matt Ryan decked out in all his John Constantine glory.

About the Show:
"CONSTANTINE" follows enigmatic and irreverent Liverpool con-man-turned-occult-detective John Constantine, who is reluctantly thrust into the role of defending our world against dark forces from beyond.

Featured in hundreds of comic book issues, John Constantine has been a DC Comics staple since his first appearance as a supporting character in Swamp Thing in 1985. The character was subsequently featured in his own bestselling Hellblazer and Constantine comic book series.

UK native Matt Ryan (Layer Cake, "The Tudors,""Torchwood") stars as the title character.

The "CONSTANTINE" pilot is executive produced by Daniel Cerone ("The Mentalist,""Dexter") and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight films, Man of Steel). Neil Marshall (The Descent, "Game of Thrones") is directing from a teleplay by Daniel Cerone with story by Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer.

"CONSTANTINE" is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television and is based upon characters published by DC Entertainment.

#SDCC14 Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro Gives Us a Look at Crimson Peak; Enter the Jaeger Combat Simulator

$

Images From Neill Blomkamp's Chappie Hit Comic-ConOne of the coolest things we've done at this year's Comic-Con was head over to Legendary's booth to check out their two must-see displays: an Oculus Rift-driven Pacific Rim Jaeger pilot sim and a mini Crimson Peak set that came with a guided tour by Guillermo del Toro himself!

First up was Pacific Rim... Guys, if you can spare some time this crazy weekend to head over and check out this video game tech build on the Oculus Rift, you need to. Describing it will not do it justice, and the experience is so undeniable cool that you'll want to do it again and again.

The Oculus Rift technology is probably the most crazy and immersive thing we've ever seen. Add in some giant Robot vs. Kaiju action, and you have what can only be described as a monster fan's wet dream! Wow.

Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

From there we spoke with del Toro about Crimson Peak, and he peeled back a few layers of what is no doubt going to be a very spooky Gothic horror experience right down to the house itself, which is home to little details you may not see your first time through. "One of the themes in the movies is butterflies vs. moths," says Guillermo, pointing to the unique wallpaper within the house. "If you look closely, you can even see some writing," del Toro tells us while grinning from ear to ear. Sure enough, upon close inspection the word "FEAR" is spelled out very subtly on the printed paper. Very cool.

"What I'm doing with the house is creating sort of an iron maiden trap. This structure literally traps the people who are inside of it. I paid a HUGE amount of detail to this one as Crimson Peak is the first time that I got to combine sort of the fairy tale/Gothic look of my European movies with my American work. I'm in a position now that I can trust myself to do both."

From there del Toro pointed us toward a couple of the costumes that were on display sandwiched in among an amazing array of props. "Moths and butterflies are a very prevalent theme throughout the movie. As you can see, they're everywhere in the props and even in the dresses. The two dresses I've chosen to display here were picked by the degree of craftsmanship in each. These are made from very authentic types of fabrics and lace. There are motifs in them that are pertinent to the storytelling. We pleated the fabrics exactly as they would have been a century ago. This helps to give the feel of things a dreamlike, fairy tale quality."

"This is mainly a hardcore horror Gothic romance film so with the romance you'll also have elements of the supernatural, elements of a thriller, and the ghosts... they're really scary, but the humans in this film are far scarier than the ghosts," del Toro says with a laugh. "Let's put it this way... things do not end well for the humans in the movie," says Guillermo before pointing to an enormous and bloodied meat cleaver and a boning knife which is used specifically to separate flesh from bone. "Both weapons you see here have very prominent roles in the film."

Even cooler? We're not going to have to wait long to see the spectres show up. "You'll see the ghosts in the first few minutes of Crimson Peak and throughout the film. There's many different ones. This isn't really a haunted house movie or even a ghost story though. One of my main passions in life is to read anything horror related omnivorously. Amongst everything that I've read, the Gothic romances have really captured my imagination. Jane Eyre... Great Expectations... whatever you're talking about, Crimson Peak captures that big sweeping romantic - but ultimately gloomy and scary - feel. It's not an action horror movie, but it is damned scary."

#SDCC14: The Soska Sisters to Tackle Painkiller JaneHere at Dread Central we love us some Soska Sisters. Good thing for us they love us right back! Some breaking news coming out of the San Diego Comic-Con pertaining to their next project has arrived! Read on for details.

THR is reporting that the Soska Sisters, the twin horror movie directors behind the cult slasher American Mary and the upcoming See No Evil 2, have signed on to helm the adaptation of Painkiller Jane, a comic created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada.

Palmiotti, via his Paperfilms banner, and Solipsist Films’ Stephen L'Heureux are producing.

The story centers on the titular heroine, a cop, who, along with with her best friend and partner, goes undercover into an interconnected drug ring. When her identity is exposed, Jane is tortured, which leaves her with preternatural regenerating abilities and a high tolerance for pain. And just like the character, the screen adaptations for Jane have proved equally resilient at regenerating.

More on this one as it comes.

Zombie Jesus Comic Prince of Pieces Being Resurrected in October by Creator's Edge PressWith San Diego Comic-Con officially kicking off today, we're happy to bring you a comics success story for Sam Miserendino's satirical graphic novel Prince of Pieces, which has been picked up for distribution by Creator's Edge Press.

Miserendino dropped us a line with the news, and while the 73-page Prince of Pieces doesn't have an exact release date, he said the publisher is aiming to launch it in October. The horror comic about the return of Jesus has been in the works for several years now, and all of Miserendino's hard work is finally paying off.

"I'm very excited that Prince of Pieces has been picked up by Creator's Edge Press,"he said. "Like me, they realize that during these troubled times the world is in need of a heartwarming story about a flesh-eating Jesus who returns after two thousand years to dispose of sinners with biblical flair."

It's all meant to be in the holy spirit of gory fun with a little pointed commentary thrown in, and soon enough we'll all be able to partake.

Synopsis:
For two thousand years you've been eating His flesh and drinking His blood... Now it's His turn!

The Son of God is mad as hell, and He disposes of sinners with biblical panache. Those He encounters suffer gruesome fates: Some are inflicted with leprosy and stigmata; others are turned into pillars of salt.

Is The Scream Franchise Plagued By Bad Blood Between Its Two Driving Creative Forces?

$
0
0

Neve Campbell on Scream 5'It's a shame to discover the amount of bad blood that exists between the Scream franchise's creative minds. To hear Kevin Williamson tell it, it doesn't sound like he'll be back to the series anytime soon.

Bloody-Disgusting was recently pointed to Cinefilles by an avid reader. The big story coming out of there is that Scream writer Kevin Williamson still has plans for a Scream 5 and Scream 6, but that nobody seems all that interested in making them.

Of course, this has something to do with Scream 4's rather disappointing domestic box office, and also the fact that the franchise is currently being re-imagined as a television series for MTV (with Wes Craven's involvement). What's most surprising (and disappointing) about this news isn't that Williamson has zero involvement in the television series, but that Craven and co. (The Weinstein Company) seem to have written him off.

“It’s weird, when I pitched ‘Scream 4′, I pitched ‘Scream 4,’ ’5′ and ’6′,” Williamson explained to a few journalists, including Cinefilles, following a panel for his new TV show ‘Stalker’ at the 2014 Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Thursday. “I pitched a whole new trilogy. I guess Scream 4 never took off in a way they hoped, and so…”

While Williamson went on to confirm what any ‘Scream’ fan already knows–he’s “not involved” in the series development anymore, as Wes Craven and his team are “done with [him]“–he also noted that these original pitches could very well turn into something bigger in the future, if all goes well. “It’s all here [pointing to his head] and my computer … if they wanna buy it from me!” he said with a smirk.

It’s very possible the Craven crew might want to do just that if the ‘Scream’ TV series currently in development at MTV turns into a hit. Williamson is not involved in that in any capacity, not even as a consultant, but tells Cinefilles that he might tune in, as a viewer.

“I’m curious. I’ll watch it. I’ll give it a go,” he said from the TCA stage at the Beverly Hills Hilton. “’Teen Wolf’ turned out to be a fun romp–I enjoy the hell out of that–so maybe MTV’s on a roll and it will be a good, cool thriller.”

Williamson is smart enough to never say never where the prospect of lucrative franchises are concerned, but it certainly sounds like we won't be seeing Ghostface on the big screen again in the near future.

#SDCC14: More Characters Under The Dome Are Doomed To Die; Will Someone Get Out?

$

#SDCC14: More Characters Under The Dome Are Doomed To DieThough I gave up on "Under the Dome" last season once it became clear that it was determined to outdo itself time and time again in terms of continuously terrible writing, CBS is still trying to make something out of this nonsensical production. The new solution? Thin the herd!

Dome's showrunner, Neal Baer, had a lot to say at Thursday's Comic-Con panel in Ballroom 20, though nothing was perhaps as big as promising the demise of several characters.

"We have kept the body count down a bit at the beginning of the season so we can rev it up at the end."

As for the show's future, Baer says that they've planned for a run somewhere between 3 to 5 seasons, with a possibility of taking the show even further. "Under the Dome" hasn't been quite the ratings juggernaut it was last year, and I suspect that's because a lot of people were under the impression that it was going to be a one-and-done miniseries like the King "events" from yesteryear. I know that I was surprised to discover the show had been renewed for a second season.

Still, the show remains successful enough, and Baer is taking advantage of what he sees are possibilities. "We have a lot of stories left to tell and we can tell them in cool ways," he said.

Deadline also attended the panel and reported that a five-minute clip of Episode 7 was shown that hinted with Mike Vogel’s character Dale “Barbie” Barbara falling into a deep cavern that the dome may prove not to so impregnable. “One of our characters might get out of the dome this season, literally,” said Baer. “We just finished shooting last week and we know the ending but we won’t tell you.” The episode airs August 11.

I'm not sure I'll ever tune back in to find out, but I certainly wish the production well.

#SDCC14: Things Aren't Just Hot in Cleveland... They're Undead!"Hot in Cleveland" isn't a show we usually mention on Dread Central, but with an animated episode heading our way next week that includes Joy, Melanie, Victoria, and Elka seeing what life in Cleveland would be like if a zombie apocalypse were to hit the city, well, how could we resist?

Animation studio Titmouse, Inc., create the art for the cartoon versions of the characters played by Jane Leeves, Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, and Betty White, respectively, in the episode, entitled "The Animated Episode." An animated LeBron James also makes an appearance.

"Viewers love that we take their favorite sitcom stars and put them in our original sitcoms so we're sure they are going to love seeing these characters in an entirely new, animated universe,"Larry W. Jones, TV Land's president said in a statement previously released by the channel. The below footage debuted at the “Legends of TV Land” panel at San Diego Comic-Con this morning moderated by Jones.

In the ep our four leading ladies embark on an around-the-world adventure that starts at Elka's apartment, which, up to this point, has been a mystery. They (and we) soon find out why. From there the women go on a psychedelic romp through pop culture favorites, including scenes reminiscent of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, "The Walking Dead," and Frankenstein.

"The Animated Episode" airs Wednesday, July 30, at 10PM ET/PT on TV Land.

#SDCC14: HBO's The Leftovers Brings the Creepy to Comic-ConHBO's depressing new drama series "The Leftovers" isn't exactly something we cover here on Dread Central, but once we saw this incredibly creepy display from the show's outdoor setup at Comic-Con, we HAD to grab a few images for you. It's enough to make a small child cry!

The show revolves around mysterious worldwide disappearances and specifically follows a group of people who are left behind in the suburban community of Mapleton and must begin to rebuild their lives after the loss of more than 100 people. Oh, you silly Rapture!

In any event... these images kinda speak for themselves. We LOVE 'em!

"The Leftovers" airs Sunday evenings on HBO. Check your local listings for times.
