#SDCC14: IDW Announces Two New Comic Series: Garbage Pail Kids and Edward ScissorhandsFriday was a big day for IDW at San Diego Comic-Con with the publishing company holding several panels and making some big announcements (with more still to come), and of note for the horror crowd are two new series, both featuring rather iconic characters...

Garbage Pail Kids:
Topps’ Garbage Pail Kids, the 1980s sensation, will have readers squirming with delight this winter as the obscene adolescents star in a brand-new comic book series from IDW Publishing.

With the likes of Adam Bomb, Leaky Lindsay, and New Wave Dave populating the Garbage Pail Kids universe, the delightfully deformed and often downright disgusting Kids are set to make their mark on the world of comics, just in time for their 30th Anniversary in 2015!

“As a child of the Eighties, I was at ground zero for the Garbage Pail Kids phenomenon,” series editor Denton J. Tipton said. “The profoundly irreverent stickers spoke directly to the rascal inside each and every one of my classmates, and helped us drive our teachers to the brink of insanity. I couldn’t be more happy to be working with some of the giants of alternative comics to push the buttons of an entirely new generation of educators, many of which likely remember when the poo-covered sneaker was on the other foot.”

Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman and a group of avant garde humorists including Mark Newgarden, John Pound, Tom Bunk, and others, the Garbage Pail Kids debuted in 1985 from Topps, as the furor for trading cards was at an all-time high. Like MAD Magazine and Topps’ own Wacky Packages before it, Garbage Pail Kids succeeded as a tongue-in-cheek send-up of pop culture, depicting quite the opposite of the “cute” approach to all-ages entertainment of the day.

“Having grown up with GPK and sharing my name with the flagship character, I can say it’s no small honor to help shepherd the Garbage Pail Kids into their first ever comic book,” said Topps’ Adam Levine, Head of Outbound Licensing. “It’s going to be a real treat to see our friends at IDW flesh out the world of the Garbage Pail Kids so that after 30 years we can finally find out who all of these weird little guys are.”

Hate cartoonist Peter Bagge, who provided the initial image of all-new character Comic-Con Ron, will be a part of the new series, planned as an anthology of loosely connected stories by a variety of talented creators from around the industry, including some of Topps’ official “GPK” artists.

Additional information, including a full creative team announcement, will be arriving in the coming months so stay tuned.

#SDCC14: IDW Announces Two New Comic Series: Garbage Pail Kids and Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands:
Just in time for Halloween, IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products are proud to announce the first in a number of new projects together, with the first ever Edward Scissorhands comic book series.

The long overdue all-new adventures begin in October, with New York Times best-selling author Kate Leth (Adventure Time) on writing duties and Drew Rausch (Haunted Mansion) lending his delightfully spooky style to the interior art. Rounding out the creative team will be acclaimed Locke & Key artist Gabriel Rodriguez, who will provide a stunning and suitably creepy cover for the debut issue.

"Edward Scissorhands is one of those dream projects that only pop up once in a lifetime, so any new story set in its universe demands to be treated with love and reverence,” said IDW Editor Sarah Gaydos. “We've found a team in Drew and Kate, along with a crew of top cover artists who are not only exceptionally worthy of the task, but are bringing something completely fresh and relevant to the table."

The 1990 cult-classic film from auteur Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands ends with the heroine of the story, an aged Kim being asked by her granddaughter, “How do you know he’s still alive?” to which she answers, “I don’t know. Not for sure. But I believe he is.” In the comic book event of fall 2014, IDW Publishing revisits this modern classic two decades after the end of film to finally answer that question.

"I'm overwhelmed with excitement to be writing Edward Scissorhands. As a former (and lifelong) teen Goth, few things are as close to my heart as Tim Burton's cult classics,” said series writer Kath Leth. “We're taking the story forward in time and telling a bit of a girl detective story—one of my favourite genres—a bit closer to modern times but still with that eerie, anachronistic touch. It's a bit creepy, a bit scary, but always full of wonder. Drew and I have so much love for the film, and we like to think it shows. Keep your eyes peeled for easter eggs and plenty of spirals…”

Kim’s granddaughter, Meg, grows up with Edward Scissorhands only being a legend, a bedtime story. But when weird things start to happen in her sleepy little town, it reawakens her curiously and she decides to search out for the mysterious Edward Scissorhands.

"I keep having to remind myself that this is happening—but if there was ever a team made for telling the further tales of Edward Scissorhands, it has to be Kate and I,” said series artist Drew Rausch. “No—seriously, IDW just built us a few months ago from some parts they had lying around. It's been a little weird. We're still getting the hang of all this "living" stuff but we promise to deliver a story that's just as perfectly timeless, chilling and heartwarming as the original—cross our cookie hearts!"

#SDCC14: The Walking Dead Season 5 - Expect More Ferocity, Bigger Setpieces, and a New State of Decay; Update on the Spin-off

#SDCC14: The Walking Dead Season 5 - Expect More Ferocity, Bigger Setpieces, and a New State of Decay; Update on the Spin-offYesterday Andrew reported in from the SDCC panel for "The Walking Dead," the Season 5 trailer arrived, and we took part in roundtables with the cast and crew, the highlights of which you'll find right here.

The press room for the series was, as usual, quite hectic, resulting in our not being able to chat with a few of the principals, but those we did have a chance to grill about the upcoming season revealed just enough to leave us anxiously awaiting October 12th, when Season 5 will debut.

We asked Danai Gurira about Michonne's state of mind as things resume, and she said the character is "dealing with circumstances" in an "intensely macro and micro" way. She has "some great interpersonal relationships" going on, like with Carl and Rick, but it's "intense getting to know the new people."

As for working without her trusty sword, Gurira said it's not an issue because "she doesn't need it." She had this idea that the sword was part of the character, but no, it was really the other way around. She's now using other weapons. "More ferocity" is coming out of her; Michonne is "goal-oriented… the tool is inconsequential."

With both being such strong personalities, how does Michonne get along with Abraham (Michael Cudlitz)? Gurira seemed almost surprised at the concept of them not getting along because Michonne "clicks with strong people." The question for her with anyone, including in previous seasons The Governor, is, "What's in your heart?" She's just trying to align with "good, strong people."

If you watched the Season 5 trailer, you know Beth is in a predicament. Someone at our table thought she recognized the woman holding her as Christine Woods ("Hello Ladies"), and exec producer Gale Anne Hurd confirmed it. As for other guest stars/new cast members, Hurd said Denise Crosby (Pet Sematary), whom we saw in Terminus at the tail end of Season 4, will be back; and she confirmed earlier reports that "The Wire's" Seth Gilliam will appear as Father Gabriel from the comics.

And speaking of those Terminus folks, Hurd said, "They have created their own community and survived [so] they're good at what they do," whatever that is… still no confirmation if it includes cannibalism. But they are adept at "working together."

Someone who isn't together with her group when the series resumes is the aforementioned Beth (Emily Kinney), and we wondered what it was like for Kinney working without the others. She said with Beth separated and on her own journey, it was "challenging and [she] felt like the character." We'll see a different kind of strength from her this year.

We couldn't let Hurd slip away without getting a feel for the tone of Season 5, and she said it's "more action-packed… they are on the road" to get Eugene to DC for a cure. There's "a lot of debate" over whether they should go or not. Expect "bigger setpieces" despite their tight 8-day shooting schedule per episode. They're filming in "urban, suburban, and rural environments" this go-round, and about to begin Episode 8, the mid-season finale.

When asked about the gore level, showrunner Scott Gimple noted how often parents and their children come up to him to talk about the show, saying how watching is a family affair. He called the opening minutes of the premiere episode (directed by Greg Nicotero) "seriously intense" and said he's "weirded out" to think that families will be watching it together.

As for the real draw of the show for us, the walkers, Gimple said we'll see a "new state of decay" in them.

Chad Coleman and Melissa McBride promised we'll see Tyreese and Carol "very soon." Before looking ahead, we asked them for their thoughts on last season's gripping scene when Tyreese forgave Carol, and Coleman said he "expected" that his character would act that way while the soft-spoken McBride said she was "as surprised as Carol was" at the turn of events.

Will Carol reveal what happened with Lizzie when reunited with the others? McBride said Carol usually keeps things to herself, but that it could be for any number of reasons… because she doesn't feel like she has to answer to anyone else or because she's ashamed of what she's done.

We wrapped up with comic creator/exec producer Robert Kirkman, who's writing two of the season's 16 episodes, and queried him about Terminus. Sure, "they seem like bad people," but whatever you think you see in the trailer is "not clear-cut… there's a lot of nuance and what you wouldn't expect." The trailer seems to open it up and show more than usual, but "there's much more coming up not revealed."

It's been awhile since we've heard anything about the proposed spin-off so we asked Kirkman for a quick update. It's "taking its time but on track… a plan is in place, [and] news will be coming soon." He added that he's still "very excited about it" so expect to be hearing more shortly.

Season 5 kicks off Sunday, October 12th, at 9PM, on AMC, followed once again by "Talking Dead." #SDCC14: Lauren Cohan Talks Bringing Bela Back to Supernatural

#SDCC14: Lauren Cohan Talks Bringing Bela Back to SupernaturalWhile speaking with "The Walking Dead" co-star Lauren Cohan at this year's SDCC, we asked the outgoing actress if she would be open to returning to "Supernatural" if the opportunity arose. Her response should make fans of her character on the show happy.

Cohan said she'd love to, especially as the series enters what are likely its final few seasons, but nothing is in the works. Her smile conveyed fond memories of her time there as she laughed and added that she'll have to make some phone calls.

In Season 3 Cohan portrayed the attractive mercenary Bela Talbot, one of the few characters on "Supernatural" able to pull a fast one on the Winchesters, which of course meant that fan reaction to her was mixed. She appeared in six Season 3 episodes and was presumed killed, but hey, this is "Supernatural" we're talking about... nobody stays dead forever! And besides, we'd love to see Cohan given a chance to somehow make the character redeemable.

While we aren't expecting any Bela news to come out of tomorrow's Comic-Con panel for "Supernatural," there should be plenty of other good scoops so be sure to check back Sunday morning for all the latest. We'll be getting up early so you don't have to!

Sunday, July 27: 10-11 AM - Hall H: "Supernatural" Special Video Presentation and Q&A
Series stars Jared Padalecki (Friday the 13th [2009]), Jensen Ackles (My Bloody Valentine 3D), Misha Collins ("Ringer"), and Mark A. Sheppard ("Battlestar Galactica"), along with executive producer Jeremy Carver (U.S. version of "Being Human"), return to Hall H to answer questions from the audience about what's in store for the tenth season of this exciting series, including their upcoming 200th episode! Fans will also be treated to an exclusive video presentation featuring series highlights, as well as a portion of the special features from the upcoming Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season DVD and Blu-ray release on September 9.

The "Supernatural" Season 10 premiere airs on Tuesday, October 7th, at 9 PM on The CW.

Nicolas Cage. Left Behind. Must See. 'Nuff Said.Every time we upload a new Left Behind poster, I can feel Foywonder checking movie showtimes in anticipation. This weekend, the hype machine rolls on with a pensive-looking Mr. Cage standing amidst the flames. Oh, how I cannot wait!

The forthcoming $15 million reboot stars Nicolas Cage, Ashley Tisdale, Chad Michael Murray, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson, and Jordin Sparks. According to producer Paul LaLonde, the flick aims to be more mainstream in its sensibilities by weaving End Times “Rapture porn” with traditional disaster movie tropes.

Left Behind hits theaters on October 3rd, but will anyone care? From the overtly Knowing-ish aesthetic of this poster, to the well-worn territory this one travels, it's hard to imagine anyone but our beloved Foy showing up for this one. Unless I decide to take a road trip and join him for a viewing.

    Synopsis:
An airborne 747 is heading to London when, without any warning, passengers mysteriously disappear from their seats. Terror and chaos spread not only through the plane but also worldwide as unusual events continue to unfold. For those who have been left behind, the apocalypse has just begun.

#SDCC14: Legendary Announces Skull Island Movie With King Kong! Legendary Pictures is apparently all about the info bombs at this year's Comic Con, as they've just announced the return of King Kong in a Skull Island movie! Yes, the stars are already aligning for a King Kong/Godzilla rematch, aren't they?

Legendary previewed some ambiguous teaser footage at their SDCC '14 panel, which wound up being a teaser for a Skull Island movie, set to showcase the return of King Kong.

While it doesn't take a genius to see what Legendary Pictures is planning to do with all these resurrected monster franchises, King Kong has always been near and dear to my heart. I've even got nostalgia for King Kong vs. Godzilla, as it was one of the first films in the Godzilla series that I saw. The prospect of another knock-down, drag-out brawl between these two cinematic titans makes me smile.

Of course, Godzilla was distributed by Warner Bros., and Skull Island will presumably come from Universal. How will this affect things? Stay tuned!

#SDCC14: What We Know About The Next Mass Effect After BioWare's PanelI couldn't be at BioWare's SDCC panel this year and it killed me to miss it. Turns out they remain tight-lipped about the direction of the next Mass Effect game, but we got some interesting tidbits, nonetheless.

Fans speculated that BioWare would at least indicate the direction or title of the next game in the series this afternoon. Instead, fans who attended the SDCC panel got glimpses of character armors and vehicle designs. They were also treated to a quick video that showed the (somewhat infamous) Mako in action.

Those who played the original Mass Effect will recall the mobile infantry vehicle that was necessary for exploring the planets you traversed. The all-terrain buggy was taken out of the sequels when fans complained that navigating it was a royal pain in the ass. To be fair, it was. But it was also a lot of fun, and its removal cost the series its exploratory spirit. Something that many of us absolutely loved, warts and all.

See what I'm talking about (from the 2007 game):

Naturally, most of us assumed that the Mako was gone for good. But this news indicates that BioWare intends to make good on their promise that the new game brings back the exploration. That's a really good thing. While I love the storyline, there was something about picking my team and just scouring every damn corner of the game that I'm looking forward to doing once more.

BioWare also reminded the panel that Commander Shepard is not returning for the next game (which, producer Michael Gamble stressed, will not be called Mass Effect 4). Curiously, though, we may see other familiar faces, and BioWare hinted (but did not state or confirm) that the next game could be set in another galaxy (an obvious choice if they're looking to avoid reference to the trilogy's ending).

If I were a betting man, I would assume this means we'll see Dr. Liara T'Soni once more. Asari live for a thousand years, and Liara was just over 100 when we met her in Mass Effect. She also happens to be one of the only characters who cannot die at any point in the trilogy (unless you really screw up at the end of 3). Hopefully they can pepper in some other characters without making it seem too forced or reliant on past glories.

The new game is being developed by BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Montreal, and they maintain that gender selection for your hero will remain. It's obviously an important feature for player agency and hopefully they'll include more precise character customization. They also confirmed that cooperative multiplayer (introduced in Mass Effect 3) is expected to return as well.

This information comes courtesy of Nerd Appropriate's Twitter feed, which I'll posted below. Appreciate the diligence there, folks!

Watch this space in the coming months. No, it may not be horror, but I'll going to be covering Mass Effect for Dread Central. Let me have this one, guys. I'm kinda excited about it.

Rob Zombie's 31 - More Concept Art Bounces In!More concept art has come running for Rob Zombie's next horror flick, the mysterious 31, and we have it for you right here... bouncing boobs included. You just can't really see 'em but they're there! Check it out!

Artist Alex Horley provides the eye candy as always. You can check out his first piece below as well.

"All I can tell you is that it’s a completely original idea; it’s something new," said Zombie in a previous interview. "It’s not based on anything. I’ll start shooting the movie in the fall. So hopefully starting from October, I’ll start shooting it. For right now I’m going to keep the details secret. But it’s not based on anything. There’s a clown thing in the movie, but it has nothing to do with Captain Spaulding, and what is in the movie doesn’t look like Captain Spaulding either; maybe the people think the poster does, but the movie won’t."

Legenday Eying Joe Cornish For Skull IslandWe told you during our coverage of San Diego Comic-Con that Legendary Pictures will be bringing King Kong back to the big screen for a Skull Island movie, and now the picture is getting a bit clearer as the studio is eying a director who knows all about dealing with monsters.

According to Deadline, Legendary has offered the directing job to Joe Cornish (Attack the Block). Max Borenstein wrote the script based on the mythic origins of King Kong, where mutant giant creatures rule.

Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.

The film is slated for a November 4, 2016 release.
