Lakeshore Moving Forward with an Underworld Reboot

0
0

Screen Gems Developing Underworld: Next GenerationBack in March there were rumblings that a fifth installment in the Underworld series was being developed, but now it appears that instead, a reboot of the franchise is under way.

According to THR's Heat Vision Blog, Lakeshore Entertainment is moving forward with a reboot of the vamp/lycan saga, hiring Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter) to write the script.

Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing.

Considering the overall gross for the four Underworld films thus far has been $458.2 million worldwide, it's no surprise Lakeshore is itching for another installment. What this means for the tentatively titled Underworld: Next Generation we heard about in the spring is anyone's guess, but we're willing to bet the remake gets the green light before that one does.

Keep it here for more as it comes!

Home Video Date Invites All Aboard the SnowpiercerAfter a whole lot of pre-release drama, Bong Joon Ho's critically acclaimed Snowpiercer finally made landfall in America last month, hitting limited theaters and seeing release through VOD outlets. Now it's headed to home video, and we've got all the details for ya today!

For conflicting Snowpiercer opinions here on Dread, we invite you to read a negative review from Staci Layne Wilson and an extremely positive review from Sirand.

From the Press Release
Anchor Bay Entertainment and RADiUS are proud to announce the home entertainment release of the post-apocalyptic thriller SNOWPIERCER. Chris Evans leads the all-star cast of Song Kang Ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, John Hurt, and Ed Harris.

Visionary director Bong Joon Ho’s “enormously ambitious and visually stunning,” (Scott Foundas, Variety) film has been widely praised as “a superb masterpiece of science fiction” (MTV). RADiUS released the film theatrically on June 27, 2014. A box office success, the film has amassed $4.4 million to date, making it one of the top ten highest grossing independent films of the year. The sci-fi epic, hailed as “a singular and breathtaking cinematic experience” (TwitchFilm.com), will be available on Blu-ray and DVD October 21, 2014.

After a failed global-warming experiment, a post-apocalyptic Ice Age has killed off nearly all life on the planet. All that remains of humanity are the lucky few survivors that boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system has evolved aboard the train, fiercely dividing its population—but a revolution is brewing. But unexpected circumstances lie in wait for humanity’s tenacious survivors...

SNOWPIERCER has a running time of 126 minutes and is rated R for violence, language and drug content. Blu-ray and DVD special features include a Critics’ Commentary hosted by Scott Weinberg and a second disc jam-packed with special features comprised of The Birth of Snowpiercer, The Characters, Animated Prologue, Concept Art Galleries, Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton on Snowpiercer, The Train Brought to Life: Behind the Scenes of a Special Screening, and TRANSPERCENEIGE: From the Blank Page to the Black Screen.

Upcoming Zombie Film Ushers in Generation Z

Upcoming Zombie Film Ushers In Generation ZI've always said that there simply aren't enough zombie movies in this world. It's such an untapped sub-genre, which is why it's always so exciting when someone comes along and decides to make a movie about those undead biters who just don't get enough love here in the horror genre.

Okay, so I'm of course being completely sarcastic, but if zombies are your thing and you can't get enough of them, read on for details about a new film that looks to put the bite back into Romero's creations!

Per Screen Daily, principal photography has just begun on the zombie thriller Generation Z with an attached cast that includes Dougray Scott (pictured), Jessica de Gouw, Martin McCann, Claire Goose, Jassa Ahluwalia, and Elen Rhys.

Set in the wake of an apocalyptic zombie outbreak, the film centers on Melanie (de Gouw) and her boyfriend, Lewis (McCann), who visit a safari retreat - The ReZort - where every paying guest has a license to kill the undead.

There they meet Archer (Scott), a former zombie hunter who has to step up when the security system at the ReZort crashes and unleashes thousands of bloodthirsty zombies back into the wild.

Handling directing duties is Steve Barker, known for the Nazi zombie flicks Outpost and Outpost 2. He directs from a script by Paul Gerstenberger.

The film, produced by Matador Pictures, The Captain Starlight Company, and UMedia, will be shot on location in Wales and on Mallorca, Spain. UMedia International is handling world sales.

Upcoming Horror Short Shows You What Happened While You Were in a Coma

Upcoming Horror Short Shows You What Happened While You Were in a ComaThough it admittedly takes some research to wrap your head around exactly what it is, the recently launched platform TentSquare is one hell of a cool idea, essentially allowing fans to be directly involved in every single aspect of a film's production.

While crowd-funding services like Kickstarter are all about money, TentSquare is more about creativity, putting things like screenplay development and casting into the hands of members. It's pretty damn revolutionary and an exciting glimpse into the potential future of filmmaking.

The reason I bring TentSquare up is because the fan-powered platform was used to build the short horror film While You Were in a Coma, which has just officially entered production. For the past few months members have hand selected the writers, director, lead actor, and cinematographer of the short; and it's now ready to get rolling.

The dark comedy is the very first original short film to be made through TentSquare, and JP Labbe has been chosen as the director. The screenplay was written by the McManus Brothers with direct input from TentSquare's members, and James St. Vincent is attached to star. Also cast in the film is TentSquare member and All Cheerleaders Die star Brooke Butler, who will be playing the role of Heather La France.

Set in the 80s, While You Were in a Coma centers on a man named Otis who wakes up from his slumber to find that the city has been invaded by aliens.

For more details about this crowd-powered project and to learn more about the platform as a whole, head over to TentSquare!

Check out the official TentSquare website to sign up for free, and dig on their TentSquare rewards page to see how and why this is worth your while!

The Gasp Menagerie: Watch the First Televised Exorcism

0
0

The Gasp Menagerie: Watch The First Televised ExorcismBefore I introduce the video, a couple clarifications are needed. First of all, this doesn't represent any exorcism ritual I've ever seen, and I've studied all of them in the world of Judeo-Christianity and many others outside it.

I've never heard of this particular spiritualism church, especially one existing in the early 1970's. Spiritualism was very popular in the early 20th century, but by the time the 70's rolled around, there were few organized pockets of believers left.

What's more, the ritual would be amazingly dangerous and foolish according to ANY variety of demonology. If you believe you are dealing with something that requires a ritual defined as an exorcism, the last thing you'd want to do is become a medium for the entity and invite it to speak through you. It'd be like having a sick person sneeze on you to find out what kind of illness they have.

Second, I get a massive amount of "these guys are hoaxing douchebags" vibe off the two "ministers" in the video. I think the news crew and family got trolled.

That said, as far as I can tell, this is an authentic video from 1971, as claimed. In it we see a story shot for a local Chicago station about a family who had reported paranormal activity in their home. They contacted the pair seen in the video, who do their "exorcism" and supposedly cleanse the home, all on camera.

The story is surprisingly straightforward and not tongue-in-cheek as one might expect from news people. Like it or not, it appears this is the first time anything purporting to be an actual exorcism appeared on US television so that makes it relevant no matter the authenticity of the ritual.

Check out the video below! What do you think?

Exclusive: Rachel Reilly Talks Axeman 2: Overkill

0
0

Exclusive: Rachel Reilly Talks Axeman 2: OverkillWe told you about Joston Theney's sequel to his flick Axeman, entitled Axeman 2: Overkill, a few weeks back; and right now we have an exclusive interview with star Rachel Reilly ("Big Brother,""The Amazing Race") to share.

Dread Central: Mum's been the word with the producers, Joston "El Rey" Theney and Dr. Christopher Otiko, so. What can you tell us about the film?

Rachel Reilly: The film is reminiscent of a 1980s slasher film. It has a witty script and is really fun, action-packed, and of course scary. You're going to laugh and have to cover your eyes! It's everything you want in a horror flick! They take the killings to a whole new level.

DC: You play "Breaker" in the film. What can you tell us about the character? How does she fit into this world?

RR: Breaker is one badass chic whose only loyalty is to a paycheck! She couldn't care less about friends, relationships, or being polite. She just wants that money, honey, and will do whatever it takes to find it.... You will see her with big guns, and what she does with them will shock you!

DC: You've had quite a long stint on the popular show "Big Brother." How have the horrors of reality TV prepared you for the horrors that await you in Axeman 2: Overkill?

RR: Ha ha! Life in the "Big Brother" house is one big horror flick! You never know what to expect around the corner; you wish there were an Axeman killing off your houseguests! You scream, cry, laugh, and go through a lot of emotions... just like in Axeman 2: Overkill.

DC: As this is your first horror film, are you a little fearful walking in?

RR: Oh my god! I am so excited to be part of this project! It's going to be really fun! I am excited about what my character is going to be wearing and doing and excited about the other actors in the film and working with Joston! I am fearful of the Axeman; I watched Axeman I and was crying because I think I'm scarred for life! So maybe I'm fearful to meet the Axeman himself!

DC: The original Axeman was pretty dark yet funny, and the minds behind it have said the sequel is going to be darker, grittier, and bloodier. You've read the script - what's your take on it? What are we in store for?

RR: You are in store for A LOT of dark and bloody guts and glory! The movie is most definitely darker then the first but in a way that horror fanatics have come to expect and love! It's going to be a kickback to the slasher movies of the 80s with all the blood and guts and glory that you love! There is suspense around every corner and a lot of HORROR! But what else would we want from the Axeman series!?

DC: What can tell us about working with Joston "El Rey" Theney so far? Have you guys gotten into the collaborative process?

RR: I am so excited to work with Joston! He's a horror creative genius! He's amazing, and he has that brilliant twisted horror mind you need in this type of movie. I think the audience is going to see things in this movie that they have never seen in a horror flick; it pushes all types of boundaries!

DC: Any future projects beyond Axeman 2: Overkill that you're working on? Are you headed back to the "Big Brother" house? What can you you tell us?

RR: I am busy being a journalist writing articles and producing and hosting my own talk show called "Reality Relapse" and working as a correspondent on a test run of a talk show on FOX called "Hollywood Today Live." I've also had the opportunity to film a few soap scenes on "Youthful Daze" and "The Bold and the Beautiful" so I'm really excited for what my career holds for me in the future. But honestly, I'm probably the most excited about working on this movie! I am training with a coach and working out like crazy so I can get my booty into Breaker's outfit for the movie!

I would love to test my skills on another competition reality show so "Big Brother All Stars" is never out of the question, but I'm secretly also hoping I get called for "Survivor"!

DC: Any website, social media, or event for yourself, the film, or future projects you'd like to share?

RR: I'm @RachelEReilly on Twitter and RachelEReillyVillegas on Instagram. I always update my peeps on Twitter. I LOVE TO TWEET and interact with fans!

Axeman 2: Overkill Details
On the heels of successful early results from the May 5th release of Axeman, filmmaker Joston “El Rey” Theney and co-writer/executive producer Dr. Christopher Otiko of Blood Red Films announce plans for the sequel, Axeman 2: Overkill.

Officially in pre-production as of Thursday, July 2nd, cameras roll in early October on location in Frazier Park, CA. The upcoming sequel stars former 3-time World Champion (WWE “Adam Bomb / WCW “Wrath”) Bryan Clark as the titular character, former “Baywatch” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” star Angelica Bridges, recent “Big Brother” reality contest winner Rachel Reilly, and Farrah Abraham in her feature film debut.

Axeman alum Arielle Brachfeld returns to the retro 80s-inspired slasher as plucky, reluctant hero Deputy Darlene Whitfield, as does Theney, who reprises his role as the affable, death-defying Darren Cole. Newcomers to the slasher series are Jacqui Holland (My Best Friend’s Girl), Alisha Seaton (The Fourth Kind), Maria Olsen (Paranormal Activity 3), Monique Parent (Profane Exhibit), and Hannah Landberg (Rabid Love).

When asked for details on the sequel, writer/director Joston Theney replied, “Well, it’s certainly a darker, grittier film than the first. We learned a lot from our first go ‘round. There’s no CGI blood splatters. No short cuts in SFX. No deeply, intertwined love trysts. This is a bloodletting! This film WILL live up to its name – Overkill. Guaranteed.”

The sequel will see an initial theatrical release in early 2015.

Get ready for another vacation to dismember with Axeman 2: Overkill.

TIFF 2014: Stills, Artwork, and Screening Details for BackcountryBackcountry, a terrifying new horror thriller from writer/director Adam MacDonald, will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th; and in honor of the occasion we have some new stills and more details to share.

Reminiscent of true-life survival stories like 127 Hours and gritty animal encounter thrillers like The Grey, Backcountry follows an urban couple who embark on a camping trip in the Canadian backcountry. When they enter a predatory bear's territory, their trip turns into an horrific tale of tragedy, will, and survival.

The film screens at the following times during TIFF 2014:
- Monday, September 8 @ 9:00 pm, Scotiabank 14 (World Premiere)
- Wednesday, September 10 @ 10:15 pm, The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (2nd Public Screening)

Synopsis:
Based on a true story, BACKCOUNTRY follows an urban couple who go camping in the Canadian wilderness - where unimaginable beauty sits alongside our most primal fears. Alex (Jeff Roop) is a seasoned outdoorsman while Jenn (Missy Peregrym), a corporate lawyer, is not. After much convincing, and against her better judgment, she agrees to let him take her deep into a Provincial Park to one of his favorite spots - the secluded Blackfoot Trail.

On their first night, deep in the forest, they have an unsettling encounter with Brad (Eric Balfour), a strange alpha male with eyes for Jenn who may or may not be following them. Alex's desire to quickly reach Blackfoot Trail only intensifies. They push farther and farther into the woods, Alex stubbornly insisting that he remembers the way. After three days their path disappears; they are hopelessly lost. Without food or water, they struggle to find their way back, the harsh conditions bringing out the best and worst in them, pushing their already fragile relationship to the breaking point.

When they realize they have entered a bear's territory, being lost suddenly becomes the least of their problems. Terror, horror, will, and survival become paramount.
