Watch Hooked Digital Media's Haunting Melissa for FreeHooked Digital Media has announced that production has wrapped on the sequel to Haunting Melissa, and with that news came another major announcement: Fans will be able to view the original film’s episodes for free!

Every week the Haunting Melissa team will be releasing a redeem code that will allow fans to watch an episode of the series for free. It’s not that simple, though, as fans will also receive a Haunting Melissa trivia question with the question’s answer being the redeem code for the next episode.

Users will then input the code into the Haunting Melissa app and receive it at no cost.

Haunting Melissa is an episodic film that was released as an app for Apple mobile devices. It tells the story of Melissa, who is mysteriously transported to the farmhouse in which she once lived. The farmhouse becomes the setting for a terrifying tale of twists and fright.

Haunting Melissa is helmed by producer Neil Edlestein, who acted as producer for The Ring and the much beloved David Lynch film Mullholand Drive.

For those who have not yet experienced Haunting Melissa, the app is available from the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

To learn more, visit the official Haunting Melissa website, follow Haunting Melissa on Twitter, and "like"Haunting Melissa on Facebook.

Exclusive: As Above/So Below's John Erick and Drew Dowdle Talk Filming Underground Found-Footage Style

Exclusive: As Above/So Below's John Erick and Drew Dowdle Talk Filming Underground Found-Footage StyleAs Above/So Below opens today, and reviews (including mine and Uncle Creepy's) are mixed. Before rendering your own verdict, hear from director/co-writers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle about their experiences making the film.

Dread Central: When I walked into the screening of As Above/So Below, I was not prepared for a modern twist on an old fashioned archeologist vs. a curse adventure. Then there’s this Satanic element and sort of a body count/slasher vibe, too. How did you manage to put everything in there and still make it very linear?

John Erick Dowdle: You know, we just trusted our intuition. It just felt right to us, more than anything else. It was funny; this movie moved so quickly, which is a rare thing. We had to stay intuitive and maybe a little less intellectual. I think that really served this movie really well. We sort of over-prepare for everything, and we really didn’t have the chance on this.

Drew Dowdle: Yeah, we liked the idea of this search for a relic. We’ve had the idea for a long time, and it’s something we always wanted to come back to. You know, something very relatable and something that people can identify with in a movie. But add to that this idea that we imprison ourselves either through guilt or regret; whatever it is that holds us back is what this self-imprisonment idea is. It’s something that was more important than the history and the legend and all that, which was obviously very important to get in there as a starting off point; but ultimately we wanted the psychological horror to take over the story.

DC: As most people who read my reviews regularly know, I am not a big fan of found footage. I feel like Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Taxi Driver or some similar classic Academy Award-winning film could never be done as found footage. We need the cinematography and composition to add gravitas. But I do have a few exceptions. I love Enter the Void. It is one of my all-time favorite movies. Chronicle, End of Watch… Those movies made found footage work. So I’m wondering: Is the found footage route something you always wanted to do with this from the beginning, or was this ever conceived as more cinematic because of the atmosphere and practical location? Your surroundings are so arresting, but one never really gets a chance to look at them with shaky cam.

JED: For this project it just innately felt like the right way to go. In part because we knew, if you are going to go down and shoot the Catacombs and shoot the real thing, [there isn’t going to be much room for lights and cameras on tripods]. If you were to shoot it in traditional coverage, and light one side of the room, and shoot that and turn all the lights around, like it would take you ten years to shoot it. [laughter]

DC: Do you remember, was Neil Marshall’s The Decent shot in caves or on a soundstage?

JED: They shot most of that on a stage. All those tight spaces and stuff, they shot that all on set. We really wanted to shoot in the real thing. And we were six stories underground and in a lot of locations. We had to lower equipment down through a manhole. So we had to stay really light, and we thought that would affect the actors’ performances, too. You know that is the most important thing: performance. In this case, we felt they would really connect with the material. So we wanted to not have people texting or buzzing during the setups. Like you know, you get them underground, and when you’re watching the movie, you feel like you’re seeing the breath in the air, you see kind of the crazed look in their eyes when they are down underground too long. So you feel like you're underground with them.

DD: And I have to say, too, that [was a] prime location, the Catacombs. There is no faking that. So it was a matter of not going to Romania and building sets, when we could have the real thing and feel like this. It was critical to us that we were shooting in the real location. Honestly, like John said, it has such an impact on performance. That is just as important a by-product. There was no way we would make this movie and not shoot it in the real place.

DC: Well, I can see how it impacted the actors. But what about impact on director? [laughter]

JED: We are rapid directors, writers, producers… there is something to be excited about. We were down there with a wireless, walkie-talkies don’t work down there, wireless monitors don’t work down there. So anytime you see the action of actors running down a corridor, we are about ten feet behind them holding a monitor with no lights on, and we sort of put our forearms up over our face in case the ceiling got low. You know, use your forearm, sort of gash your forearm instead of gash your forehead. We all took a big hit down there.

DD: Every filmmaker’s dream is to be kind of left alone when making a movie. Nobody wanted to go down into the Catacombs. We had a French line producer that was kind of our time-keeper; he was keeping track if we were going into overtime, but... he was literally claustrophobic. So if you ever saw him actually down there, we knew we were in deep shit... we knew [laughter] the plug was about to get pulled when we saw him actually down there. But for 98 percent of shooting the movie, it was just us and the actors.

DC: I realize that the physiological aspect is indeed the most important thing because as someone who sees hundreds of horror movies a year, I rarely get emotionally invested in the characters. And you did accomplish that. But I am wondering in the course of your research, what was the most interesting thing you learned either about the Catacombs or about some ancient curses?

JED: The thing that I found really interesting is there is this whole underground Cataphile world of people who live down there. They have massive systems, and they carry their pickaxes and they’ll break down walls just to explore all these unchartered areas. Some of them had bunks down there. There is such this weird kind of subversive underground world -- they have a cinema down there, or had one… the cops found it. It’s just this really cool kind of edgy underground world that I found fascinating.

DD: I thought, too, just how old the space is was really interesting. How much it’s been used over the centuries. Like one day we would be in a zone where we saw graffiti from the French Revolution. And then a few days later we would be in a space that they carved Adolf Hitler symbols into the rock. So many centuries of history that have used this space. But I would say the one detail of research that we knew we wanted was the search for the Philosopher’s Stone. We did a lot of research on that.

Multiplayer Announced for Dragon Age: Inquisition

Multiplayer Announced for Dragon Age: InquisitionFrom deep within the bowels of the mystical land of Edmonton, BioWare unleashed a new trailer and a major announcement for Dragon Age: Inquisition... multiplayer is making its Dragon Age debut.

For the first time in the series, gamers will be able to crawl through twisted dungeons as a member of a team, consisting of up to four players. While Dragon Age: Inquisition promises to deliver depth by being quest-focused and providing a wealth of treasure and customizable items, it will be separate from the single-player game.

Thus, anything that happens in multiplayer will not affect your single-player game or its storyline.

One feature that the company's press release placed a square focus on was unlockable characters. BioWare stated that players will be able to unlock 12 characters across the game’s three classes of Warrior, Rogue, and Mage.

The trailer also reveals a wealth of character classes, such as assassin, alchemist, elementalist, and katari. To create the game’s multiplayer side, veteran developers of the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises were brought together to create a co-op experience that developers say is “fun, fast paced,... [and] requires strategic teamwork.”

The decision to include a multiplayer aspect with the new Dragon Age was inspired by the swelling popularity of the multiplayer aspect of BioWare’s previous title, Mass Effect 3. Fans can experience the multiplayer of Dragon Age: Inquisition hands-on at Pax Prime this weekend in Seattle by visiting the Xbox booth on the 4th floor of the north hall.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released November 18th on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Check Out Amazing Puppetry in the Trailer for New Toby Froud Short 'Lessons Learned'

Check Out Amazing Puppetry in the Trailer for New Toby Froud Short Lessons LearnedWhen last we saw Toby Froud, he was an infant sporting stripey pajamas and getting abducted by David Bowie in Labyrinth, but now we've gotten word that Froud is following in his father's footsteps...

He has a new short film, Lessons Learned, on the way, and today we're happy to show you its trailer.

Actually, to say the last time we saw Froud was in Labyrinth is not true. His special effects work has appeared in such films as ParaNorman and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But now, reminiscent of his father, Brian Froud (the elder Froud was, among other things, the conceptual designer for Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal), Toby has created a short film entitled Lessons Learned that was successfully Kickstarted last year and is heavily influenced by his father's iconic characters.

Teaming with another mega-talented offspring, Heather Henson, and her puppet company Ibex Puppetry to create the creatures, Froud wrote and directed the 15-minute Lessons Learned, which is currently hitting the indie circuit and on the road with Henson's Hand Puppet Dreams tour.

Escape from New York Remake Details; Plissken Actor Wish List Revealed

Escape From New York Remake Details; Plissken Actor Wish List RevealedWe've been talking about a remake of John Caprenter's classic flick Escape from New York for a long time now, and finally some details have come to light, including the wishlist of actors being eyed to play Snake Pilissken.

Starlog is reporting that, according to a source close to the project, Silver Pictures has a shortlist of actors narrowed down to three: Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim, "Sons of Anarchy"), Jon Bernthal ("The Walking Dead"), and Dan Stevens (The Guest).

Honestly? We cannot picture any of the three bringing the type of bravado and gusto to the role that Kurt Russell did, but of the trio named, I've gotta go with Bernthal. Hunnam is said to be the studio's #1 pick.

Joel Silver's Silver Pictures is planning an entirely new take on the material. The goal is to turn it into a trilogy, starting with an origin story in a fashion similar to the way Rise of the Planet of the Apes restarted that franchise.

The site goes on to report that the script for the film had always had a team-dynamic to it, and the emphasis has almost turned the supporting characters into co-leads. And while Snake Plissken is still looking to be the de facto leader of the team, it seems these characters will be a mix of the old and the new: "Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a war zone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.

Keep one eye open for more.

  • Beth Riesgraf Has Become a Shut In

Beth Riesgraf Has Become a Shut InBeing that 95% of the human race is comprised of idiots, I so understand the desire to never leave the house. Still, there are times when even our places of refuge are violated and become pretty damned scary. Read on for the first word on the new horror flick Shut In.

THR is reporting that Beth Riesgraf (pictured), who was one of the stars of TNT’s "Leverage," is starring in the psychological horror thriller Shut In, which began production this week in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Rory Culkin (Scream 4), Martin Starr (Veronica Mars), and Jack Kesy ("The Strain") are also starring in the indie flick, which is being directed by Adam Schindler (Delivery: The Beast Within).

Riesgraf is playing a woman who suffers from agoraphobia so crippling that when a trio of criminals break into her house, she cannot bring herself to flee. But what the intruders don’t realize is that agoraphobia is not her only psychosis.

The production start marks a milestone for the project, whose road began in 2010 when it was written by TJ Cimfel and David White. It won top honors at the 2011 Shriekfest and was on the 2012 Blood List of Hollywood’s top unproduced horror screenplays.

Steven Schneider, whose credits include the horror films Insidious and Paranormal Activity, is producing with Jeff Rice (Lone Survivor), Lati Grobman (The Iceman), and Erik Olsen (The Book of Eli). Executive producing are Christa Campbell, Matthew Lamothe, Tommy Vlahopoulos, Brian Netto, and Vicarious Entertainment.

Stan Lee Gets Fit for Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers

Stan Lee Gets Fit for Kevin Smith's Yoga HosersAs he recently announced, Yoga Hosers will be the second film in Kevin Smith's Canada-set "True North Trilogy," which kicks off this year with Tusk. Now that principal photography is under way, Smith has revealed that an old friend is along for the ride. Read on!

Earlier this week Kevin Smith took to his Twitter account to confirm the Yoga Hosers involvement of the legendary Stan Lee, whom he had previously directed in Mallrats.

Per the picture he tweeted out, it looks like Lee will be playing a police officer in the film, though we don't yet know if he'll have a major role or just one of his trademark cameos.

The entire cast of Tusk is returning for Yoga Hosers, including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach, and Harley Morenstein. New to the cast are Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, and Jason Mewes.

Yoga Hosers, written by Smith, centers on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith), who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with, according to the producers, “all seven Chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.”

The characters of the convenience store clerks appear briefly in Tusk.

NECA Plays Hockey with NES Jason Voorhees Replica Mask

NECA Plays Hockey with NES Jason Voorhees Replica MaskEver since NECA released an NES-inspired Jason Voorhees figure at Comic-Con last year, purple and blue Jason has been absolutely EVERYWHERE, turning in one single year from zero to hero.

And the unexpected revival of the character's most oddball incarnation is showing no signs of slowing down, as NECA has just unveiled a full-size replica mask based on the game.

Teased at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, we've now got a full look and more details about the mask, which will glow in the dark - much like the mask worn by the company's sought after 8-bit action figure.

The hand-painted reproduction features elastic harness straps that allow you to wear it or hang it on the wall. As a bonus, it comes in unique, game-inspired packaging.

Unfortunately, the mask isn't due out until November, which makes it a no-go for this year's Halloween. Sad face.

I'm typically against cool ideas being milked to death, but in the case of this particular one, I say keep the products coming!

Dread Central 1 on 1: Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys' Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure

    0
    0

1 on 1 With Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys' Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale FigureThe holidays came early to the Dread Central offices when Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys sent over their Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure for us to comb over.

First and foremost one thing was immediately apparent... this is not your standard action figure despite its multiple points of articulation which are there only to afford you, the collector, the ability to pose this bad boy to your liking. Each and every figure is hand-cast, assembled, and dressed by the manufacturer.

Given the price tag of $224.99, we don't expect you'll be handing this over to junior to throw around with reckless abandon. No, this is a piece purely meant for display.

Standing about 14" tall, the Elder Predator is one of the single most stunningly detailed pieces we've seen in some time, and it is completely screen accurate as seen in 1990's Predator 2. It's all here down to the most minute of details. The old time gun, the dreadlock clip, the space machete, and oh those glorious signature retractable claws. The figure comes with interchangeable hands that can be swapped out easily so you can decide which bits of weaponry you want your Predator to be brandishing, if any at all. From top to bottom this baby is gorgeous.

If there's anything negative to say about it, it's that getting a lot of the accessories on this bad boy is a bit nerve-wracking as they're delicate as they come. Take the necklaces, for example; they're strung with the thinnest of strings that feel as if they'd just snap if the wrong amount of tension or pressure is applied accidentally. My best advice here is DO NOT dress this thing on your own. Consult the manual as it illustrates the easiest way to get everything on and off.

The bottom line is this... if you're a Predator fan or a collector, this is something you'll not just want... it's something you will NEED!

If you have the scratch, do yourself a favor and order this one NOW! It's totally worth the price tag! Highly endorsed and recommended!

    Product Summary
Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys are proud to announce the Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure. This fan favorite hunter from Predator 2 features highly detailed armor, weapons, and accessories and will be the perfect addition to horror/sci-fi collections worldwide!

State of Decay is an open world zombie game originally released on Xbox 360. The game was heralded for its unique features such as an unscripted story and a world that changes when players are offline.

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is tentatively scheduled for a spring 2015 release. This announcement adds to what is already a promising first half of 2015 for zombie fans as Dying Light and Dead Island 2 are also due out in the first two quarters of next year.

New Lords of the Fallen Trailer Is Devilishly Cryptic

New Lords of the Fallen Trailer is Devilishly Cryptic“Only evil can destroy evil,” remarks the stoic narrator in a glimpse into the hidden secrets and living world of the upcoming action RPG Lords of the Fallen. Check out this latest trailer.

A red mist in a moonlit forest, a dungeon of torment, dizzying hilltop grottos... the new video is meant to showcase some of the settings found in Namco Bandai’s upcoming game. But what is truly intriguing is the trailer’s cryptic monologue, delivered by a brogue-voiced, mysterious narrator and revealing brief glimpses of some of the details surrounding the game.

It has been known since the game’s announcement that its anti-hero, Harkyn, would be battling an awakened god; and today’s trailer put a name to that ancient evil, Rhogar.

The voice speaks of an abandoned temple and that it is the gateway to Rhogar’s realm. This may indicate that the game will feature two realms: one of the living and one of the god Rhogar. This idea is further hinted at as the voice speaks of traveling to alternate dimensions.

"Find out the truth about the war." The storyline for Lords of the Fallen has long been known to be that of ancient evil gods returning to Earth and humanity looking to former criminals to save them. But these brief quotes reveal another layer to the story, adding depth beyond the simplistic goal of hunting down the bad guys.

The trailer also hints that the game may have multiple endings, as the narrator states, “There is no single end to your journey.”

Lords of the Fallen will be available on October 28th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Those who pre-order the game will receive a free upgrade to the limited edition, which includes the game’s soundtrack, the Monk’s Decipher DLC, and the Demonic Weapons Pack DLC.

L.A. Slasher Set to Terrorize Salt Lake Comic Con with Two Special Screenings

L.A. Slasher Set to Terrorize Salt Lake Comic Con with Two Special ScreeningsSocial satire horror film L.A. Slasher is opening and closing the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con, running September 4-6; and if you'll be there, we have all the details you need right here, including a look at the Con's guest list, which is pretty impressive considering it's only their second year.

L.A. Slasher, directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger (Girls Against Boys, The Alphabet Killer), will have a special advance screening to open the festival and a midnight screening to close it out.

Salt Lake Comic Con 2013 was the largest first-year comic convention in North American history and the largest convention ever to take place in Utah. This year’s event will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“We are thrilled that such an iconic event will be screening our film,” said L.A. Slasher producer Jeffrey Wright.

The film offers a tongue-in-cheek commentary of reality TV and the undue admiration for people who are famous for simply being famous. “[It] is definitely bound to make waves, and to screen at Salt Lake Comic Con is a very exciting experience for us all,” commented producer Daniel Sollinger.

The special advance screening of L.A. Slasher will include a panel. In attendance at the prestigious event will be director Owen, producers Wright and Sollinger, as well as several members of the notable cast, which includes Eric Roberts, Brooke Hogan, Abigail Wright, and Elizabeth Morris.

Along with the aforementioned Roberts, other SLCC 2014 guests of note for the horror crowd are Bruce Campbell, Ron Perlman, Eliza Dushku, Sam Witwer, Danny Glover, Cary Elwes, Charisma Carpenter, Ernie Hudson, Ian Ziering, James Hong, Eugene Clark, and Jim Wynorski. You'll also find Stan Lee, Barbara Eden, Giancarlo Esposito, Hulk Hogan, Lou Ferrigno, and "Arrow's" Stephen Amell and John Barrowman.

For more SLCC info and tickets, visit SaltLakeComicCon.com.

    Salt Lake Comic Con

L.A. Slasher stars Danny Trejo (Machete), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Riddick), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Drake Bell (“Drake & Josh”), Brooke Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”), Tori Black (Not Another Celebrity Movie), and Marisa Lauren (“Superhero Movie”) with the voice of Andy Dick (“NewsRadio”) as the "L.A. Slasher."

    Synopsis
Produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger, L.A. Slasher is a biting social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous. It explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent - purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior.

Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the "L.A. Slasher" publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them.

For more info follow L.A. Slasher on Twitter (@LA_Slasher) and on Facebook.
