Phil Nichols' Stage Production of Frankenstein

Next up are preliminary sketches and a couple of early sculpts Phil did of the zombie possum that will be featured in Niko Red Star's Juice: Zombie Alley Vol. I (formerly Zombie Alley). Nichols' Facades FX is handling animatronic fabrication for the various stages of the mutated zombified possum creature. Phil told us, "We’re building three stages of mutation and zombification of the critter as well as FX for it being decapitated, skinned, and cooked, then putting itself back together! We're doing the FX all practical - no CG for the Undead Possum!"

Here's the synopsis of the film from when we first heard about it last year:

A meteor falls from outer space, and Momma (the moo-moo wearing, shotgun toting, brains of the operation) and Greasy Earl (her deadbeat mechanic son) find the rock, discover it has highly addictive properties, take it back to their auto body shop, and make white trash meth out of it, which starts a zombie apocalypse.

This fun horror/comedy follows a struggling rock band as they wrestle with drugs, sex, rock and roll... and a unique twist on zombies and the monster genre as the mutated Momma, Earl, and their “Juicehead” lackeys ravage the town and spread the infection in an attempt to build their Evil Auto Empire.

Nichols has also somehow found time in his schedule to give guest lectures on FX make-up at some of the Tier 1 universities in Texas. He recently did a zombie make-up FX demo for Rice University in Houston and sent us the following pictures and video clip to share with our readers.

Lastly, Nichols promises that once he gets through this year of horror theatre work, he’ll be focusing on producing some more movies of his own. He's writing several new projects that Facades FX Films will be handling beginning in 2013-2014. So be sure to keep him on your radar!

Rosario Dawson to Head up The NYPD's Occult Crimes Taskforce

Rosario Dawson to Head up The NYPD’s Occult Crimes TaskforceLord knows New York City can be an absolute circus at times that can teeter on the brink of losing complete control. Still, it's an amazing place, but it takes a lot of people to keep it that way. Speaking of which...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rosario Dawson is teaming with "The Walking Dead"'s Gale Anne Hurd to bring her graphic novel to A&E.

"O.C.T." is being developed with both women attached as executive producers. Though "O.C.T." -- an acronym for the NYPD’s Occult Crimes Taskforce -- is still in its early stages, it is being considered as a star vehicle for the Sin City actress.

The scripted drama, an increasingly appealing genre for the cable network, will explore the inner workings of the task force, which was established after the Civil War to make the New York City streets safe from practitioners of black magic, demons from another dimension, and all manner of supernatural malcontents.

Like the graphic novel co-created by Dawson and David Atchison, "O.C.T". will center on the character of Sophia Ortiz, a new member of the bureau who uses magic, spells, ghosts, the undead, and the unnatural. At the heart of the story is an ongoing struggle between the "O.C.T." detectives and an organized demon force attempting to take over Manhattan. (At one point Dimension Films was developing a big-screen version.)

News of the project comes as A&E wraps up its best quarter on record, with the network best known for "Hoarders" and "Storage Wars" posting gains in the key adults 25-to-54 demo (now averaging 819,000 viewers) and with total viewers (1.6 million). If ultimately ordered to series, "O.C.T." would join a scripted slate that includes
"The Glades", "Breakout Kings", and the upcoming "Longmire".

The script will be penned by The Unusuals’ Jorge Zamacona, who also will serve as a producer alongside Dawson and Hurd, who is particularly well-versed in the graphic novel to TV business as evidenced by the success of AMC's "The Walking Dead". Atchison, Ford Gilmore, and Tony Shasteen, the graphic novel's illustrator, will join them as producers.

Nightbreed TV Series in the Works

Nightbreed TV Series in the WorksThere's no doubt about it... one film that absolutely slays most horror fans is Clive Barker's Nightbreed. While we all wait patiently for the director's cut to surface somewhere (hell, anywhere), it turns out the man himself is in talks to bring the horrors of Midian to the small screen.

During a recent interview on his website about his recent health scare and other various tasty bits, Clive dropped the following on fans:

"We are also actively in conversation about doing a Nightbreed television series which will be for cable, so it will have a chance to be as sexy or as graphic in terms of the violence as we need it to be. For example, do you have Spartacus over there? Oh my God, it redefines gruesome... I also applaud them for finally realising it’s not a bad thing to see a manhood once in a while – it’s not as if half the world doesn’t see it daily..."

Barker continues, "The sensitivity of our culture has sort of caught up with Nightbreed. I don’t wish to be immodest, but the general sense is that the movie failed because people didn’t want to associate with the monster and I think our culture has changed – I think our culture is now ready to embrace the ambiguity. You’ve only got to look at Twilight where obviously the monsters are the good guys – I’m not a huge fan but I’m enough of a fan to watch and see monsters being celebrated."

Bring it on, baby! Thanks to DC reader Jinx for the heads-up!

Indie Horror Month Interview: Writer/Director Keith Hodder Talks Shift and More

Last year up-and-coming filmmaker Keith Hodder made quite a splash in the indie genre community with the faux Grindhouse-style trailer Van Gore he co-directed with Peter Strauss and Jerrad Pulham that was selected to be a part of the Hobo with a Shotgun home release.

Now Hodder is back with his latest project called Shift, a short thriller about recent university graduate Ryan Stewart (Nick Stojanovic), who travels to Toronto with dreams of big success but instead comes face to face with harsher realities.

When he's jobless and out of money, Ryan has to make peace with his own personal defeat and make the long drive back home to eastern Canada. But things take a different turn when he picks up a clever and manipulative hitchhiker (Christian McKenna), who begins to test Ryan's emotional and psychological limits along the way.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Writer/Director Keith Hodder Talks Shift and More

Recently Dread Central caught up with Hodder to hear more about his latest project, the inspiration behind the story of Shift as well as more on another short film project he recently worked on called The Tortured.

Check out our interview with Hodder below, and make sure to check back here later this week for more coverage in honor of Dread Central's Indie Horror Month celebration.

Dread Central: Talk a bit about the story of Shift and what inspired it; it seems like a very relatable story (guy struggling with success) that really resonated with me.

Keith Hodder: Shift came to because I was really wanting to do something different. Something more natural and ultimately more to the dramatic formula. I was working on Stephen King's Bag of Bones in the summer, and a lot of the job required that I drove between home and the set. So every day I was driving and I had the time to think and ponder and get an idea churning; I guess it's not surprising that I created a road film.

But I also remember thinking that I wanted to create a film that symbolized the struggle that we all go through at the same point in Ryan's life. The transition from school to the "real world" so to speak. I wanted to approach a lot of that discussion with the respect for the characters much like John Hughes would in The Breakfast Club and all his other fantastic films. I wanted it to be a film that captured a moment that we all go through. It's something we can all relate to, the anxieties placed on us at such a time, whether it is from internal or external sources. I believe there's a little bit of Ryan in all of us and it didn't hurt that, when I was done with the job, I drove back from Nova Scotia to Toronto.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Writer/Director Keith Hodder Talks Shift and More

Dread Central: You've got two very strong lead men in this; can you discuss your casting process and collaborating on Shift with both of them?

Keith Hodder: I'd never worked with Christian and Nick before, and the casting process was definitely fun and exciting. We knew what we wanted out of both roles and we knew that they both called for some fantastic actors. I'm really pleased with those guys - they really delivered and blew the characters out of the water. I was amazed by their commitment to the roles they were given and their ability to add some of their own flair into it.

I believe we did a day or two of casting, and when both of them came in, we knew we wanted them to be a part of Shift. Collaborating with them was very fun and lent to lots of laughs on set. I'm the sort of filmmaker that is serious when the camera is rolling, but between takes I enjoy fostering a humorous relationship with the actors (usually calling them assholes or something like that) and these guys handled that perfectly.

Dread Central: Even though most of the film is just two guys inside a car, I'm guessing there were still a lot of filming challenges on Shift.

Keith Hodder: Oh yeah, filming was challenging. Making a road film can be an incredibly unpredictable experience, and for someone who is an overt planner, that was a very difficult thing to come to terms with. We didn't have the financing and funds to close off certain roads and streets so we literally had to throw our actors in the picture car and then get the camera rolling.

We also had to find roads that were long enough to support long takes where the actors were spouting out their dialogue. We'd usually get two to three takes per length of road and then would have to turn around, take the drive and reset and start again. It was definitely a lengthy process. We shot for six days straight in Mississauga, Ontario, and I believe three or four of those days were driving scenes while the others were interiors.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Writer/Director Keith Hodder Talks Shift and More

Honestly, I really enjoyed shooting the interiors, and we had a great team the contributed so much to the film that, while the process challenged the group's patience, it was an amazing learning experience.

Dread Central: Shift has such a different tone than Van Gore did- was that intentional on your part to showcase your own different styles of storytelling?

Keith Hodder: Well, yes and no. Van Gore was completely different than anything I have done before and it was a blast to shoot. To be upfront, I am still very divided on where I'd like my filmmaking to go. If I continue with Van Gore, then I will be seen as a horror director and will guide myself through that niche.

There's nothing wrong with that as there is a lot that can be done with the genre, but I love films like Shift and I love action and crime so I'd be hesitant to dive into one niche. With that being said, feature ideas for Van Gore are still floating around so, as you can see, I'm very conflicted.

Indie Horror Month Interview: Writer/Director Keith Hodder Talks Shift and More

Dread Central: So what are the plans for Shift- is it going to be making the festival rounds? Do you see this story as a feature-length film down the road?

Keith Hodder: Definitely! The plan from the get-go was to send it around to festivals. We have a potential of 19 marked out, and we've thus far submitted to the majority of them. So yes, I'd love for it to do the rounds in a few festivals and then that'd be that. I have a very punctual mind so once I am done with a project, I am done with it. I don't see a feature for the future of Shift as I am already running around on another idea now.

Dread Central: I noticed that you also co-directed another short film called The Tortured; what can you tell us about that project?

Keith Hodder: The Tortured was shot last January in Thomaston, Georgia, of all places. I'd been frequenting YouTube at that time and had come across some very talented guys by the name of Nick Laurant and Brett Driver. We all starting chatting over YouTube and Facebook and then we eventually decided that it was time for us to make a film together so I flew down, Nick flew over from LA and Brett was from the area and we shot The Tortured.

We cast all local Atlanta talent and I was blown away by what each of the actors put on the table. It was a very exciting project and it can be found on YouTube whether it be on my channel or Nick's.

Dinner for Fiends - Wrath of the Space Baby

Dinner for Fiends - Wrath of the Space BabyIf you like Dinner for Fiends episodes that consist mostly of us jabbering about nothing of great importance, then this nearly two-hour installment is going to be music to your ears.

Myself, Uncle Creepy, Matt Fini, Buz, and (for about a half-hour) Andrew Kasch have returned for a Dinner for Fiends that might leave you with indigestion of the mind.

Everything starts off fine as we discuss in spoiler-y details the season finale of “The Walking Dead”. That’s when I make the grave mistake of bringing up the outrageous online meltdowns people are having over the ending to the video game Mass Effect 3, and suddenly the show turns into a Matt Fini therapy session. You’ll hear in painstaking detail why this game broke Fini’s heart and left him a bitter, broken shell of a man.

Then the technical difficulties begin as Space Baby tries desperately to remind me why I continue to be no fan of Skype.

But on the plus side, I think this might be the first DFF in ages that is 100% rape-free.

From there the Amanda Seyfried serial killer flop Gone gets spoiled, as does the Halle Berry shark dud Dark Tide, even more so the indie chiller ATM. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance gets burned as well. You’ll also hear our thoughts on the trailers for Dark Shadows and Prometheus. We’ll top it off with some viewer mail for dessert.

Dinner is served.

Editor's Note
What you're about to listen to came within a hair of being a lost episode. For whatever reason we were riddled with technical difficulties, which led to Buz nearly killing himself cutting together the original recording with Foy's back-up recording. Yes, the Foywonder saved the day. It took over a week but Buz managed to Frankenstein it together for you. Yes, you will hear the occasional weirdness and interference. The only thing we can do is blame it on the Space Baby. Sorry for the mess. Won't happen again.

    Rest in Peace: Warren Stevens

Rest in Peace: Warren StevensThe word just reached us that a true legend passed away earlier this week, and we're saddened to pass on the news that actor Warren Stevens, who appeared in Forbidden Planet as well as numerous TV shows, died in Sherman Oaks, California, on Tuesday, March 27th at age 92.

Stevens, who suffered from lung disease, also acted in "The Twilight Zone" in both 1962 and 1986, "The Outer Limits", "One Step Beyond", and "Alfred Hitchcock Present", among many other films and TV series.

Born in Clark's Summit, Pennsylvania, Stevens attended the Naval Academy but left before graduating due to problems with his vision, though he later served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He developed his interest in acting while at Annapolis and did summer stock before entering the service during the war. After WWII he returned to summer stock, worked in radio, and joined the Actors Studio in New York. He made his Broadway debut in 1947 and appeared in several other plays on the Rialto. His small but important role in "Detective Story," which later became a film, led to a contract at 20th Century Fox.

Stevens was twice married and divorced. He is survived by three sons, Adam, Matthew, and Lawrence.

We here at Dread Central offer our sincere condolences to Warren's friends, family, and constituents. Thanks for the memories, sir!

Video Footage Documents a Trio of Space Storm Flicks are Destroying Syfy

Syfy must really be hoping that viewers have 2012 disaster fever because by the end of May a good 75% of their original movies for the year will have been disaster flicks.

That will continue with a trio of space age disasters premiering over the next six weeks: Seattle Superstorm, Alien Tornado, and Space Twister.

Syfy sent out the following press release officially announcing the April premieres of Alien Tornado and Space Twister.

Alien Tornado, premiering Saturday, April 14 at 9PM (ET/PT), stars Jeff Fahey (Machete) and Kari Wuhrer (Sliders). In the movie, aliens attack Earth, using deadly electrical tornadoes as weapons. A farmer, his brilliant high school daughter and a tornado blogger race against the clock to find a way to thwart the horrific invasion. Alien Tornado is a production of Active Entertainment.

Erica Cerra, star of Syfy’s hit series Eureka, plays the mother of a teenage genius in Space Twister, premiering Saturday, April 28 at 9PM. Other-worldly storms -- similar to the ones comprising the eye of Jupiter – begin destroying the planet, disintegrating everything they touch. A high school student’s science project becomes the mysterious key to ending the catastrophic storms and saving civilization. A production of Cinetel, Space Twister co-stars Mitch Pileggi (Sons of Anarchy).

Space Twister was originally entitled Super Storm, but that was almost certainly changed because Syfy is already premiering a sci-fi disaster flick this very weekend entitled Seattle Superstorm. There’s clearly only room for one Super Storm on the schedule.

In Seattle Superstorm, a UFO crashes into the Puget Sound somehow touching off catastrophic weather and only Esai Morales (“Caprica”) and Ona Grauer (House of the Dead) can save the city. It premieres Saturday night at 9/8 Central.

Syfy has posted two clips from Seattle Superstorm in which extras first run for cover from lightning strikes and a tornado that takes down the Space Needle, and then more extras and Esai Morales run for cover from fireballs falling from the sky.

Syfy has also posted two clips from Space Twister in which you’ll see characters trying to survive not getting electrocuted or burned alive. What you won’t see: a space twister. Booooooo!

For some reason Syfy has not posted any clips from Alien Tornado, possibly because they’re afraid that the sight of blue energy tornadoes is neater looking than anything in the other four clips. I did find the international trailer for Alien Tornado (under the even more uber-generic alternate title Tornado Warning) online so you can see for yourself.

For those of you like myself that much prefer Syfy movies with monsters and killer animals, I’m afraid we’ll all have to wait until June when the network goes all-out premiering a new one each Saturday night during the month: Roger Corman’s Piranhaconda, Jersey Shore Shark Attack, The Asylum’s Bigfoot, and Arachnoquake.

    The Primate of Hannover House

See that headline? Yeah, I'd totally go see that movie. Sasquatchploitation is near and dear to our hearts here at Dread Central and we're always happy to let you know about a new Bigfoot movie stomping our way.

Hannover House has acquired the exclusive, worldwide production rights to Primate, a sci-fi thriller about a cryptozoological creature that terrorizes a team of Bigfoot researchers. The property was written by Andrew Sands (Airspeed, Beyond Loch Ness) and is planned for a USA production in September.

Although story and plot details have been intentionally quarantined, Hannover House reports that Primate suggests that the creatures may be part of a surviving tribe of Gigantopithecus hominoids. This early primate, currently known only through fossil findings, towered over 8-feet in height, and has been pegged as a possible identity for the legendary Bigfoot sightings.

Interest in Bigfoot and the field of cryptozoology has exploded in recent years, due in part to the successful Animal Planet cable series "Finding Bigfoot" as well as features such as the Hannover House video hit, Boggy Creek: The Legend is True. The Hannover House video, directed by Brian T. Jaynes (Humans vs. Zombies) has exploded into a major sell-thru video hit, and has stimulated the company's interest in similarly themed films.

Amazon Studios Dabbling in Horror; Reveals New Plans For Submitted Scripts

Amazon Studios Dabbling in Horror; Reveals New Plans For Submitted ScriptsI love Amazon, I really do. I order a huge chunk of my movies through them, I love my Kindle and Kindle Fires and I just set up their streaming on my PS3. But they're starting to scare me with what can only be called their quest for world domination. Keep reading for the skinny.

According to Deadline, Amazon Studios has unveiled their slate of upcoming movie productions - with a healthy amount of genre-related material included:

    Origin Of A Species:

An ex-cop faces the greatest obstacle of his life after his three German Shepherds are infected with rabies and terrorize a small, Midwestern community. His estranged wife feeds her sexual desire for one of her students, even as fear grips the town and the body count rises.

    Darkest Before Dawn:

A renegade group of corrupt cops attempt to curb crime by employing a bloodthirsty vampire, but when the creature turns on his captors, all hell breaks loose.

    Touching Blue:

A teenage girl with the power to track people by things they held - and who gets burned if people touch her - is pulled into the hunt for a serial killer who is targeting people like her.

    ZvG: Zombies Vs Gladiators:

In ancient Rome, a team of gladiators must fight its most vicious opponent ever... Zombies. As the outbreak spreads and the creatures run wild, it's up to our heroes to save the city.

    Blackburn Burrow:

Just before the Civil War engulfs the South, a nameless man with a mysterious past fights to save a young girl from the supernatural horrors infesting a small Appalachian town in Northern Georgia.

    Children of Others:

Skylar is thrilled to finally be pregnant— until she discovers her unborn baby is not entirely human. Pursued by a government agents, she races to discover whether the child she carries is the first wave of an alien invasion or the key to humanity’s salvation.

In addition, Amazon Studios will evaluate original scripts within a 45 day window after they’re submitted. According to Deadline, they will "pay up to $10,000 to extend its initial option for 18 months and add the project to the Development Slate. Writers of rejected scripts can choose to have them posted so others can critique them. Here are some of the other rules and conditions. Amazon announced its movie-making plans, and an output deal with Warner Bros, in 2010. The company says that since then it has featured 700 test movies and 7,000 scripts, and awarded more than $1.9M. But some Hollywood writers warned aspiring screenwriters that the program could restrict their copyright and authorship rights."

There's no doubt about it. ABC's journey down "The River" was a rocky one. The freshman show definitely traversed some peaks and valleys, but in the end it got a lot more right than it did wrong. So with the first season wrapped, the question beckons... When can we expect the DVD?

According to ABC Studios, expect season one of "The River" to street on May 22nd. Extra content has yet to be revealed, but we're told this set will be packed with bonus features and deleted scenes. We're still waiting on cover art, so expect an update when we get it.

"The River" stars Bruce Greenwood, Leslie Hope, and Joe Anderson. Jeff Galfer and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the ABC Studios television project produced by Oren Peli and his Paranormal Activity franchise collaborators Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. The pilot episode was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Orphan, House of Wax).

    Synopsis
Famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole (Greenwood) went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. The shocking truth about his disappearance is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be discovered. To the millions of kids who grew up watching his nature show, Dr. Cole was a hero. To his own son, Lincoln (Anderson), he was more of an enigma. Now, six months after he vanished, Lincoln is finally ready to bury the past when Dr. Cole's emergency beacon suddenly goes off. At the urging of his mother, Tess (Hope), Lincoln reluctantly joins her on a search for his father. To fund the rescue, they agree to let Dr. Cole's cagey ex-producer, Clark (Paul Blackthorne), film the mission documentary-style. The mixed crew of old friends and new acquaintances includes the sexy and resourceful Lena (Eloise Mumford), loyal mechanic Emilio (Daniel Zacapa), and lethal bodyguard Captain Kurt Brynildson (Thomas Kretschmann).
