samhallbannerIt’s a sad day for fans of the horror soap “Dark Shadows.” Writer Sam Hall has died after a short bout with pneumonia in Rhinebeck, N.Y. The news was broken by his son, Matt, who confirmed the passing via The Hollywood Reporter. He was 93.

Sam Hall joined ABC’s Gothic soap “Dark Shadows” in 1967 and penned more than 300 episodes, often collaborating with writer Gordon Russell.

He co-wrote the screenplays for the features House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows, filmed during production of the TV show, and worked on a short-lived Dark Shadows primetime revival for NBC in 1991.

We here at Dread Central would like to offer our deepest condolences to Sam’s many friends, family members, and constituents. Thanks for the wild and wacky memories, kind sir.

Event Report: Knott’s Scary Farm 2014

0
0

This past Thursday, Dread Central hit Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA for ‘Media Night’ and the opening of their 43rd annual Knott’s Scary Farm Halloween Haunt.  Read on for a run-down of some of their returning (and new) attractions.

Simply put, in this writer’s estimation, when it comes to park attractions turned ‘haunt’  in SoCal, there’s no bigger bang for your buck than Knott’s; world class coasters, Elvira’s show (this year titled ‘Elvira’s Big Top’ (get it?), engagingly scary mazes, that sense of sweet nostalgia for Los Angeles residents given the attraction’s four decade plus run and oh, let me not forget one of the park’s best aspects – short lines, all conspire to make for an entirely enjoyable experience.

So what did we think?

Highlights include Knott’s new interactive experience ‘Special Ops Infected,’ a laser tag inspired attraction which allows park goers to battle the undead with infra red rifles. Led by a squad leader through various rooms, over bridges and through obstacles and explosions (and with a view tasks to complete along the way), it’s a sure-fire adrenaline hit for attendees who are fans of the ‘The Walking Dead,’ and who are wishing for a zombie apocalypse.

Also a kick this year is the Skeleton Key Pass, a ticket upgrade which allows park goers access to special rooms in five of the park’s mazes. Each of the rooms in the selected mazes offer up a more in-depth (and at times pretty scary) experience. It’s enriching to be sure, and well worth the cost (it’s only $65.00 for Fright Lane front of the line passes with the Skeleton Key upgrade).

Additionally new for 2014 is the maze ‘Voodoo.’ It’s creepy, it’s cool, and in terms of pure art direction, it’s something entirely beautiful to experience. A trip into the cursed swamps of Louisiana, there’s plenty of scares for those looking for them, and for those just wanting to immerse themselves in pure atmosphere, it delivers in spades.

‘The Tooth Fairy’ maze also debuts for 2014. A macabre take on the fairy tale, you’ll find instead of money some malevolent creatures under your bed pillow, and a cool animatronic monster finale. In keeping with the majority of the mazes at Knott’s, it’s a blend of an old-school ‘spook house’ traveling carnival vibe with a few slick inserts (and this for me makes them the most enjoyable in SoCal; call it nostalgia, but it’s the equivalent of comfort food on a cold winter day).

As for ‘Elvira’s Big Top’ we unfortunately missed the show due to multiple rides on the vertigo-inducing coaster ‘The Silver Bullet,’ but were informed by fellow journalists that it was an improvement on Elvira’s 2013 show, itself an entirely entertaining hour, so we’ll be back to check that out soon.

Returning mazes this year include ‘The Gunslinger’s Grave,’ ‘Black Magic’ (a twisted take on Houdini, and one of my personal faves), ‘Dominion of the Damned’ (an attraction  that’ll satisfy fans of Anne Rice), ‘Forevermore’ (for me this maze seemed convoluted in narrative, though my cohorts for the evening seemed to relish it), ‘Pinocchio Unstrung,’ ‘Trick-or-Treat’ (loved this one, and the witch finale still thrills) and ‘Witch’s Keep.’ Also returning is the attraction ‘Trapped: Lock and Key,’ in which select groups (additional fees and reservations are required) work together in a darkened maze to facilitate their escape via a series of challenges.

Add to that the themed scare zones ‘Ghost Town,’ ‘CarnEVIL’, ‘Fiesta De Los Muertos’ (it’s a macabre dance party), ‘Headless Horseman’ (exactly what is sounds like, and it’s amazing), the live stage show ‘The Hanging’ and plenty of coasters, you’ll probably need to hit the park twice to experience everything. And that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Knott’s Scary Farm runs from September 25th through November 1st. For more info and to purchase tickets, visit Knott’s Scary Farm Online.

Writer’s note: My personal thanks to Leidy Arevalo for organizing our visit, and to Knott’s for undeniable five star catering, perhaps the best of any media night in the history of SoCal haunted park attractions.

Annabelle Video Interviews: Stars Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, Alfre Woodard; Director John R. Leonetti

Our own Vanessa “Gore Whore” Gomez headed to the junket for Annabelle a couple of days ago and came back with a battery of interviews featuring the cast and director John R. Leonetti. Annabelle herself remained pretty tight-lipped as always. Friggin’, diva.

Capable of unspeakable evil, the actual doll exists locked up in an occult museum in Connecticut—visited only by a priest who blesses her twice a month. New Line’s supernatural thriller Annabelle begins before the evil was unleashed.

Scheduled for release October 3, 2014, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Annabelle Wallis (X-Men: First Class) and Ward Horton (The Wolf of Wall Street) star. Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard (Cross Creek, Twelve Years a Slave) co-stars as Evelyn, who owns a bookstore and is familiar with the occult. Rounding out the cast are Kerry O’Malley (TV’s “Those Who Kill”) and Brian Howe (Devil’s Knot) as Sharon and Pete Higgins; Tony Amendola (TV’s “Once Upon A Time”) as Father Perez; and Eric Ladin (TV’s “Boardwalk Empire”) as Detective Clarkin.

Annabelle reunites the filmmakers behind 2013’s hugely successful supernatural thriller The Conjuring. James Wan, director of the global hit, is producing Annabelle with Peter Safran. John R. Leonetti, who served as cinematographer on The Conjuring, is directing. Gary Dauberman wrote the script. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter, and Hans Ritter are the executive producers.

Also joining Leonetti behind the scenes are director of photography James Kniest, production designer Bob Ziembicki, editor Tom Elkins, and costume designer Janet Ingram. Joseph Bishara composed the score. New Line Cinema presents an Atomic Monster/Safran Company Production, Annabelle.

Synopsis:
John Form (Horton) has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Wallis)—a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn’t last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now… Annabelle.

Eric Heisserer Details a Truly Horrific Account

0

Screenwriter Eric Heisserer is best known for his work on such recent horror films as The Thing (2011), Final Destination 5 (2011) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). Still, the spookiest thing he’s ever written is without question the details of a true(?) story which he posted to Reddit. Encapsulating these events for you would do it no justice, so we’re reprinting it here for safe keeping… just in case.

This is a long read, but damn is it creepy.

Okay, first things first: I’m Eric Heisserer. While I’ve been a lurking reader here, I’ve been more active on Imgur for the last year or so. Ten years ago, I wrote an online epistolary story called “The Dionaea House” that caught some attention, including here on reddit, and it launched my screenwriting career. Since then, I’ve learned some brutal lessons about working for studios, and I’ve had some rewarding experiences, too, but the most interesting are the potential horror projects sent my way for adaptation, either as a movie or a documentary. The minute you succeed with one scary story, everyone calls you “the horror guy.” So for the past years I’ve been a kind of catch-all for weird and creepy stuff. Sometimes I’m approached by a friend or extended family member with a disturbing experience, and they just want someone to listen to them and not say they’re nuts. (Also, having worked in supernatural fiction for a decade, I’ve become friends with a paranormal investigator, whom I occasionally introduce to people asking for help.)

Most of the projects are, well, kind of boring. They’re derivative, or too subjective to the person’s own life. But now and then something truly unsettling crosses my desk. Those projects tend to get made, or at least get some traction. But now I’m in an odd position on one that began last month, when a friend-of-a-friend named Kevin asked for a meeting to discuss the disappearance of his sister.

Since then I’ve put in countless hours on this thing, time away from my home and my wife, digging around in an empty house, working with Kevin to trace his sister’s last week before vanishing. Then, on Friday, her estranged husband shut everything down and denied us adaptation rights, even threatened to sue me.

I understand his position, but it still pissed me off. Because this is a true story people need to hear about, and not in a “I want to be the one to break this news” way, but more of a “what the hell is really going on” way. So I checked with my lawyer at Jackoway Tyerman, and while I might not have the film or documentary rights, legally there is nothing to stop me from sharing my own personal experience on this thing plus whatever Kevin volunteers, as long as I don’t use the last names of some of the people involved. So that’s what I’m going to do.

It’s still tough, regardless. While the writer-brain in me tends to think, “This is unnatural and bizarre and we should show it to others,” I’m also aware that I’m intruding on the lives of real people. This isn’t a group of fictional people I’ve invented for a Final Destination movie. I’ve come to some conclusions about Gwen and Robert and their son Dash, and I’m dumping a lot of that here for context, but it still feels awkward (at best) for me to discuss the lives of other people, especially when some of my assumptions could be way off base. So: grain of salt.

Gwen and Robert have been married for ten years. They had their son Dashiel a year into their marriage. Two years ago, in July, when he was seven, Dash disappeared from their house overnight. They tucked him into bed, then woke up the next morning and he was simply gone.

Police investigated. I haven’t delved into the cold case reports or contacted the IIC on this yet (and I don’t have much authority to do so, really) but Kevin tells me that whole year was “emotionally vampiric” for them. His sister began developing OCD habits like checking locks on doors, and Robert had to deal with an invasive police department that refused to rule him out as a suspect before going elsewhere. Added to this pressure: A lack of ransom call or note. Zero signs of a break-in at the house. And a head-scratcher for evidence: Dash’s bed had been moved from the wall, as if to vacuum behind it. That’s the bit Kevin remembers.

Eventually both Robert and Gwen were dropped as suspects, but Dash was never found, and they joined the sobering ranks of families burdened by unsolved crimes.

(As an aside, this past month I’ve learned that a staggering 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year, and upwards of 115 cases each year wind up as ‘unsolvable riddles‘ like this one.)

I will say this: I’m surprised they stayed married after this ordeal. Well, I guess I am and I’m not. My second cousin lost her 12-y/o child to a DUI driver in Florida and the death fractured her family, I think she’s divorced now. That’s not unusual. But maybe Gwen and Robert clung to the idea that one day Dash would come home, but they couldn’t really work as a couple in his absence anymore, so they separated last October. Gwen remained in the house and Robert moved across town. This was the situation. Gwen lived alone, in the home where her only child disappeared one night.

And then last month, Gwen vanished as well.

Since she’s a 38-year-old woman who lived alone, it doesn’t garner the attention of an urgent missing persons case, although the detective working the case would argue otherwise (and honestly I think he’s doing a good job so far). Before I stepped foot in that house, I even posited to Kevin a crazy scenario, partly because I wanted him to be aware how easy it can be to imagine a scenario like this: Gwen wanted to start a new life with Dash somewhere else, without Robert, and waited two years to finally make her move to join him. But a lot of circumstantial evidence weighed against that scenario, honestly, and the fact that both mother and son have gone missing from the same four-bedroom house is disturbing.

According to Kevin, who kept in touch with his sister throughout the whole mess, she went to a therapist to manage her emerging OCD. For two months after Dash’s disappearance Gwen was losing her hair; it would fall out in clumps of strands. The doctors said it was psychosomatic. She finally got past that, and a year or so later stopped taking klonopin regularly and instead took a therapist’s advice and picked up a hobby. Kevin had been pushing her to try an art class like painting or sketching, but instead Gwen took up amateur photography.

From what I’ve seen in her house, and stories Kevin’s shared, Gwen is one of those people who gets a dozen books on a subject that interests her, and so there was a shelf of reference material on photography and lighting in her home office, many stuffed with colored Post-it flags.

But conventional photography wasn’t quite her pursuit. As Kevin put it, she became more and more focused on a way to make a living at it, primarily by carving out some niche that hadn’t been oversaturated in the market. Some artistic application of photography she could sell and claim as unique or at least rare. This drove her to more eclectic books on the subject, including one on infrared photography she may have purchased from eBay. Friends and family were always on the lookout for new material on the subject.

At some point in July, she acquired a book. I’m still looking to see if it was an online purchase or something from a local reseller who set it aside for Gwen since it mentioned photography.

This is the book that got me involved in the case.

I don’t physically own this journal right now. Robert has it, who’s moved back in as of last week and has demanded Kevin provide any and all material he may have taken from the house before Robert arrived. (And look, I get it, this guy is probably scared to death that police and/or Gwen’s family will want to pin this on him somehow, so it’s partly a defense mechanism.) But whatever, point is, I do have a series of scanned photographs of the thing, courtesy of Gwen’s home computer. The recently-saved files and browsing history on her hard drive was the first place Kevin looked when trying to track down his sister.

Here is the journal where Kevin found it on her kitchen table:

Journal

Some things to know about this book:

          • It’s old. This was someone’s work journal.
          • It’s been beaten up and even chewed up during its lifespan.
          • It’s in a foreign language. My guess is some Filipino language.

Gwen must have made these scans to send to a translator, but Kevin doesn’t have her gmail password so we don’t know what those results were. But here are some of the images from her drive:

Photo Book Photo Book Photo Book Photo Book
Here’s what we’ve figured out so far, after walking the house and sifting through stuff as carefully as we can:

Gwen had been testing some homemade camera that uses film that looks like oversized Instamatic sheets, plus traditional film cartridges and a flash strobe with a bulb etched with a thousand little bevels, akin to the surface of a cut diamond. We think she purchased most of it online. In her downstairs darkroom plus the master bathroom, which she converted into a second darkroom, we found eight trays marked with different number sets, and sealed jars of chemical solutions. The place smelled vaguely of ammonia and toner.

Something from this journal gave her an idea. Kevin says she’d told him a week before she had been working non-stop on a new “groundbreaking” project, and had asked him to take a look at her progress and let her know she wasn’t going crazy. (The regular check-in from Gwen with the question, “Am I going nuts?” has been recurring for two years. Kevin has helped her find her keys, replace batteries in her smoke detector, and other tasks, but mainly he just listened to her. Whenever she would lose something in her house, he’d have to come over and calm her down.)

When Kevin went to her house, she was nowhere to be found.

He did eventually find a set of photos she’d developed. One version, she developed normally, as far as I can tell. It’s a color photo of Dash’s room.

Dash's Room

But the other one has been taken with some special process.

Dash's Room With Door

And this is what’s been keeping me awake at night.

I hope to share more information as I get it from Kevin, but for now this is what we have.

UPDATE: Some news. Some good, some frustrating.

First up – I’m told the language in the journal is Ifugao. I don’t have any translations yet, but I’m reaching out to friends to see if I can find someone to a) confirm this and b) work on reading it for us.

Next: Some people have been asking about that photo with the door. I don’t know what to tell you. I can say that when Kevin and I inspected the wall where the door appears in the grainy image, we didn’t find anything unusual. No invisible handle, no hinges, etc. It felt colder to me, like just in that area, but that may be psychosomatic.

Gwen apparently tried several times to get the exposures right, and I have some of the ones from the same batch that the first one was from. Kevin lent me all that. Here they are.

Eric Heisserer on Reddit

(And yes I’m drinking this early, don’t judge.)

The real kicker this morning was my email with Kevin. He went over to retrieve some more photos (developed or undeveloped) from Gwen’s rooms, and Robert was there with a locksmith. He’s moved back in, and doesn’t want Kevin or me around anymore. He claims it’s because we’re making her disappearance a “tourist attraction.

I really don’t want it to be that, and Kevin knows I haven’t shared addresses or locations, but okay. The thing is, I don’t believe Robert buys into any of these weirdness. And I’m worried he would rather just get rid of anything that looks unexplainable than try to look into it further. It’s even more agonizing because Kevin said Robert confronted him with one of Gwen’s photos, demanding to know if he “let” his sister do these crazy art projects.

The photo, as Kevin described it (copied from his email):

It was a shot of their house, from the street. Done in that weird development process, black and white and weird shadows. Only there was another goddamn house fused to it on one end. Like someone left a really old house standing and built a new one attached to it. It was on the side of their house where Dash’s room is.

I really want to see that photo now, but things are tense now.

Oh, and one more tidbit: Robert did admit to contact with Gwen, two days before Kevin went to her house and couldn’t find her. She left Robert a voicemail, telling him, “I found his car!” She was ecstatic. I asked Kevin what that meant, and he said he thinks it’s the toy car Dash loved, it went missing when he did. One of those little McQueen cars from the movie. Gwen replaced it a year ago and left it in his room, and then started adding new bits of Disney merchandise, particularly on Dash’s birthday. (I think this is what drove her and Robert apart the most; the way Gwen kept adding little touches to his room as some lure to bring him back.)

I have not seen any photos to suggest a car toy in them. But if Kevin can get into her gmail, we might find it.

UPDATE 2: We have the pages translated (mostly). Go here for that info.

Now let us be clear… we do not know if this is a hoax, a pet project for Reddit, or a viral for an upcoming film. Either way, it sent a chill down our spines and we’ve presented it here for you to draw your own conclusions. Share what you think in our comments section below. We’ll keep tracking this story for updates.

10 of the Scariest Movie Villains Not From Horror

0
0

It is of course horror films, with their intentions on scaring us, which have brought the majority of cinema’s most terrifying characters to life, from Leatherface to Pennywise. But if you think nightmare-inducing bad guys only exist within the confines of horror movies, well, you’d be dead wrong.

Over the years, plenty of non-horror movies have brought to the screen villains that have given our favorite horror icons a serious run for their money, oftentimes even far exceeding the terror factor of the horror genre’s biggest and best.

Don’t believe me? Well then I’d like to introduce you to ten of the scariest non-horror villains of them all, which I’ll be listing off in no particular order. Dig in!

10 of the Scariest Non-Horror Villains
SIN CITY – KEVIN
When it was announced that Elijah Wood was cast as Frank Zito in the remake of William Lustig’s Maniac, most horror fans scoffed at the thought of Frodo Baggins playing such a creepy character. But those who had seen Sin City were quite aware that Wood was more than just Frodo, and was totally capable of being one hell of a creepy little bastard. In the film Wood played Kevin, a mute cannibal with razor sharp fingernails and a taste for prostitutes – as in, he quite literally eats them, feeding the scraps to his pet wolves. As for their heads, well, he saves those, and mounts them on his wall like hunting trophies. Elijah Wood can’t be scary, you say? You might want to check out Sin City, which will surely change your mind about that!

10 of the Scariest Non-Horror Villains
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN – ANTON CHIGURH
Many have compared the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men to a slasher film, which isn’t all that much of a stretch. Much like slasher classics such as Halloween and Friday the 17th, the film centers on a ruthless and totally unstoppable killer, played with frightening conviction by Javier Bardem. To steal a line from Dr. Loomis, Bardem’s Anton Chigurh is quite literally evil on two legs, killing with absolutely no remorse and seldom showing a single shred of recognizable humanity. He’s Michael Myers without the mask, with a bolt gun being his particular ‘kitchen knife’ of choice. Big screen bad guys don’t get much more terrifying than Anton Chigurh, an evil dude that would not in the least bit be out of place as the star of his own horror movie.

10 of the Scariest Non-Horror Villains
LITTLE MONSTERS – BOY
One of my favorite movies as a child was Little Monsters, which took the sleep-depriving idea of a scary monster living under your bed and turned that monster into a totally awesome best friend. It’s a brilliant concept, and the film is a magical adventure that’s fun for the whole family. What’s not so family-friendly, however, is the movie’s main villain, who showed a young me that not all monsters are friend material. Going simply by the name ‘Boy,’ and flanked by an evil minion named Snik as well as an army of killer toys, the leader of the monster underworld is a hideous creature who wears a human face to appear like your average, ordinary boy. It’s even implied that it’s the skin of actual children that he’s wearing atop his monster face, which needless to say makes Boy the kind of villain you wouldn’t typically expect to find in a family comedy. And that’s why I love him. And sincerely hope he’s not under my bed.

Go Beneath and Get Bound By Flesh at Home!

IFC Midnight has two titles hitting DVD soon that are more than appropriate viewing choices given the season! Read on to find out when you’ll be able to land yourselves copies of Beneath and Bound by Flesh. Look for them both on October 28th.

From the Press Release

BOUND BY FLESH tells the amazing story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins who rose to superstardom at the beginning of the 20th century as sideshow attractions, performing alongside the likes of Bob Hope and Charlie Chaplin. While most sideshow performers simply served as objects of curiosity for their passing audiences, the Hilton Sisters stood apart by putting on a full-fledged show, complete with singing, dancing and music. But they were ruthlessly exploited by their managers and ultimately sued for their freedom, which they won at a terrible cost. A gripping, roller-coaster tale of showbiz tragedy, Leslie Zemeckis’ film puts a touchingly human face on two outsiders who went from the lowest rungs of society to the big time and back again. The IFC Films theatrical release was an audience favorite at the Chicago Film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival and was named Best Documentary at the Hollywood Film Festival. Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News called it “vibrant and fascinating. Zemeckis brings generosity and compassion to the Hiltons’ tragic story. One wishes they were able to see the movie themselves.”

Bound By Flesh

Veteran coal miner George Marsh (Jeff Fahey, Planet Terror, Machete, Under the Dome) is about to retire, and he’s giving his daughter Samantha (Kelly Noonan, Road to Paloma) a tour of the mine on his last day. Six hundred feet below the surface, a catastrophic collapse traps George, Samantha and a crew of miners, with rescue workers not expected to reach them for 72 hours. But the drill strike that caused the disaster also opens a hole into an unknown chamber, and before long the crew suspects they might not be alone. With their oxygen supply steadily depleting, George and Samantha must figure out a way to stay alive as resources become scarce and the danger rises. Inspired by true events, BENEATH is a claustrophobic, bleak and terrifying look at humanity in its deepest, darkest places. The IFC Midnight theatrical release won six awards at the 2013 Screamfest, for best picture, director, cinematography, special effects, makeup and visual effects. “Director Ben Ketai does a masterful job propelling the action while winding his ever-diminishing cast through tighter and murkier spaces,” said Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times.

I Am Legend Sequel Bites Back

0
0

You can add the sequel/reboot to I Am Legend to the list of once troubled productions that have recently gained steam, as it appears as if Warner Bros finally has found a way to extend its hit Will Smith last-man-on-Earth blockbuster I Am Legend into a potential new franchise.

Deadline is reporting that the studio is working on a reboot that isn’t meant to star Smith, who has been reluctant to do sequels and so far has avoided a reprise in Independence Day 2. Warner is retrofitting A Garden At The End Of The World, a spec script that the studio bought back in April from Gary Graham, who was working at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan when he posted his script on the Black List website and got the attention of CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver. They signed him and sent his script out.

Amid several bids, Warner Bros acquired what was described as a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers. When Graham was brought in to rewrite his script, the studio by then had talked to the I Am Legend producers and noted enough similarities to the themes and mythology of that film that they asked the scribe to consider a redraft to fit that property.

Original I Am Legend producers Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road, Overbrook’s James Lassiter and Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold are on board to produce, along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Weaver.

15 Of The Creepiest Things Kids Have Said To Their Parents

In general, I find kids to be spooky and they always say things that are just creepy. Whether they have an active imagination or just sensitive to their surroundings, I don’t know and I don’t want to find out. So, when one Redditor posted a seemingly harmless question to the parents on Reddit, the responses that came back was definitely spine-tingling. The question was: What is the creepiest thing your young child has ever said to you?

This Reddit thread is full of creepy stories from parents (and other adults) about kids who may be possessed, see dead people or even grow up to be psychopaths.

So, we dare you to check out these stories tonight and in the dark. We have warned you and are not responsible for any sleepless nights these stories may induce!

Haunted Hollywood Sports 2014 – Haunt Review

0
0

Last Friday night, Dread Central visited Haunted Hollywood Sports in Southern California for the kick-off of their third annual and highly interactive haunt, and we barely lived to tell the tale. Read on!

Located at 9030 Somerset Blvd. in Bellflower, CA, Haunted Hollywood Sports is the seasonal recreation of Hollywood Sports, a park dedicated year round to the pursuit of Airsoft and Paintball.  The former is basically paintball without the messy paint and cumbersome guns.  Resembling the military firearms they mimic with exacting detail, Airsoft weaponry eschews paint in favor of 6mm plastic BBs, which can be fired rapidly and with high velocity. The result allows players to engage in fairly realistic combat scenarios, and in the case of Haunted Hollywood Sports, it allows park goers to, well, shoot a lot of zombies.

Arriving to the 23-acre park at dusk, journalists were directed by ‘armed’ soldiers into awaiting military troop transport trucks and Humvees and then ‘disinfected’ by others in Hazmat gear, before being driven off to a staging area within the park itself. Along the way, our vehicles came under attack by a horde of the undead (scare actors who were made up to resemble scores of flesh-eating ghouls). Driven back by Airsoft fire by the soldiers in our midst, we arrived nonetheless safely to our destination, and there were greeted by an open bar, catered food and a DJ spinning music that could have been pulled directly from Daryl Dixon’s iPod.

Off to a great start, we were ready to sink our teeth into the park’s attractions. First up was the ‘Venom’ walk-through maze, which has returned from 2013, though with some new twists and turns. Old-school carnival spook house in design, the maze offers up an assortment of macabre visuals, as well as electrically charged walls, some gruesome effects, moments of sight deprivation and at times the feeling of actual danger, given its disorientating layout and fully committed scare actors. We enjoyed it thoroughly.

Next up was the ‘Zombie Killhouse,’ located in the park’s year-round HSP Combat Center. After suiting up in flak vests and face gear and being provided with Airsoft rifles, we were instructed to follow our squad leaders into an extensive and believable recreation of a besieged Middle Eastern town. Following a black-light lit blood spatter on the ground we moved in, our visibility cut at times by darkness and fog. Clearing alley ways and structures room to room, it wasn’t long before we came under sustained attack by myriad zombies who crept, lurched and shambled, and who also happily fell beneath our volleys of Airsoft pellets.

In an improvement to last year’s ‘Zombie Killhouse,’ Haunted Hollywood Sports has now implemented a flag football construct; attendees’ flak vests come with flags, which if captured by one of the undead signify the park goers’ death. This did much to up the drama considerably, as well as our adrenaline. If you’re looking to safely experience the zombie holocaust, this is about as good as it gets.

While the park’s media night was a ‘soft opening’ with only two open attractions, visitors can expect the full experience for the rest of the run, with three other interactive mazes (‘Fog Hollow,’ ‘Legends of Blackstar Canyon,’ and ‘Fort Bedlam Zombie Research’), two additional Killhouses (‘Voodoo Killhouse’ and ‘Last Stand Shoothouse’), and three scare zones (‘Carnival of the Damned,’ ‘Undead’ and ‘The Massacre’) now open.

Being the SoCal originators of a haunt attraction focused primarily on immersive zombie combat (others have since taken notice, with Knott’s Scary Farm delivering their own take this year), in this writer’s opinion, Haunted Hollywood Sports takes the cake.

Haunted Hollywood Sports runs on select days through November 1st.  For more info, visit the official Haunted Hollywood Sports website.

New Summer of Blood Poster Home to a Total Dick

0
0

A new poster is here for writer/director Onur Tukel’s vampire comedy Summer of Blood, which will be having its premiere in theaters and on VOD on October 17th,  and it’s home to some dubious praise. Check it out!

Tukel (Septien, Red Flag) also stars along with Alex Karpovsky (Girls), Anna Margaret Hollyman (Gayby, White Reindeer), Dakota Goldhor (Thumbsucker), Dustin Guy Defa (Bad Fever), and Keith Poulson (Hellaware, Listen Up Phillip).

Synopsis
Writer/director Onur Tukel turns in a hilarious performance as the monumentally lazy, socially oblivious and commitment-shy Erik Sparrow, who is dumped by his career-woman girlfriend (Anna Margaret Hollyman, White Reindeer) when he rejects her rather charitable marriage proposal. Feeling lost, he turns to a disastrous string of online dates that successively eat away at his already-deteriorating confidence until a lanky vampire turns him into an undead ladykiller. Soon, Eric is prowling the streets of Brooklyn in search of anything to satisfy both his maniacal sex drive and his hunger for blood. A collision of absurd, self-deprecating wit and existential curiosity, Summer of Blood is a hilarious horror-comedy with a clever bite all its own.

V/H/S Viral – Behind the Scenes with FX Artist Vincent Guastini

0
0

Looking forward to V/H/S Viral (review)? Then have we got a treat for you! Special effects artist Vincent Guastini just released a plethora of behind-the-scenes images from one of the film’s segments. Check it out!

THE V/H/S VIRAL EFFECTS FOLLOW-UP: As promised, Vincent has released the floodgate of pictures for one of the segments, called “Bonestorm,” directed by Aaron Moorhead & Justin Bender. We pulled out all the stops and I was able to convince the directors to go practical for the effects and not use CGI and also do some miniature effects as well. I wanted to bring back the days of old school scary with modern day aesthetics.

These were specters, cloaked figures that melted & attacked our skaters in the story. Aaron Moorhead was talking about doing things with CGI since he’s pretty damn good at visual effects. I was like ‘NO! You can’t do that. No way!’ I was like yelling in my shop at Aaron and Justin in a very passionate way like a nut saying, ‘you guys ever see the Blind Dead films?’ They were like, no, so I started to show them those movies and I said we have to bring that back into the films of today. So that was the direction, a modern day Blind Dead that melts on camera.

So me and one of my concept designers, Joshua Ballze, started brainstorming and Joshua came back with some amazing designs of the ideas we both had based on the script and me pushing to go practical… From there I got some of my superstar Sculptors, Mike Rottella & Josh Wasylink, and told them to go nuts. We casted them up in rubber and went old school on one stage, and made one prosthetic skull rigged so it literally melts on camera with a bunch of fishing line, drool and other tubes and cables to make the skull just skin itself on camera, peeling back silicone skin with the extra bonus of seeing the eyeball fall out of its head right on top of one of the victims as a GoPro picks up the shot with a bunch of other in camera gags of arms being torn out or heads being crushed in with skateboards.

In the end one of our victims gets swallowed by a T-Rex sized monster at the close of the segment. For that we recast and made a monster I had in stock that never saw the light of day, with a bunch of horns and a big mouth which was for a quick shot of a giant foot to come down forced perceptive and then pick up and swallow one of our actors who is documenting the whole event. So you can see CloverField style the camera being swallowed by the monster. Me and my on-set crew, Ted Cary, Adrian Marcato, Joshua Ballze and myself, were running around making up the army of hooded specters. Was  like working on a new version of the Skeleton Army from Jason and the Argonauts. There was also a fair amount of gore effects, fake bodies and limbs to keep us busy as well.

The last shot I did was rigging miniature skeletons that blew apart via fishing line and air compressed powered coffee creamer. The footage was slowed down and greenscreened and comped in over the live action footage. It seems powered coffee creamer mixed with some bits of Styrofoam makes for some fantastic bone fragments.

It was a real challenge but I think my effects on this segment and Todd Lincoln’s was something fresh and different. I love working for these guys – they care, they were like big kids on set, always smiling and joking around, running around going through the scenes with big smiles on their faces I mean it was fun, what filmmaking should be about most times. They make the process a big kid’s toy store and I think with this film and their upcoming film SPRING they’re going to be the next big horror and fantasy guys on the scene. Was truly a blast collaborating with them and I hope to do it again.

Although at press time Todd Lincoln’s segment was omitted from the theatrical release, there are other plans for it that I am not at liberty to talk about. But once that happens I promise to release what we did for that amazing segment as well.

Thanks again to producers Chris White and Brad Miska.

New Parlor One-Sheet Inked in Blood

Playing as part of this year’s Screamfest L.A. is the indie flick Parlor, and we have the official artwork for you to dig on. Look for full coverage from the event soon!

From the Press Release
The writing/directing team of Kenny Gage and Devon Downs will host the worldwide premiere of their new horror film, Parlor, during this year’s Screamfest film festival. The well-known genre festival kicks off its 14th annual event in Los Angeles on October 14-23 at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres (6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028).

The film follows six young college hopefuls vacationing and partying in Eastern Europe who get more than they bargained for when they unwittingly get caught up in a maniacal tattoo artist’s fiendish side business.

Parlor stars Robert Lasardo (“Nip/Tuck,” Death Race, Human Centipede III) as the character known as “The Artist,” who runs an Eastern European tattoo parlor. As writer/director Kenny Gage (Raze) explains, “We were very fortunate to have had the opportunity shoot in Old Town, Vilnius, Lithuania. The sense of scale, scope, and historical architecture provided a unique backdrop for the film.”

Co-writer and director Devon Downs delves deeper, “It’s common to get tattooed while on vacation, and you are never more vulnerable than when you are being tattooed… especially in unfamiliar territory.”

The film was financed by ASL Pictures and produced by the veteran team of Todd Slater, Andrew Pagana, Bill Ceresia, Thomas Mahoney, and Brett Donowho. The film also stars Jordan James Smith, Tiffany DeMarco, Ben Whalen, Claire Garvey, Anthony Del Negro, Beth Humphreys, Joey Fisher, and real life tattoo artist Sara Fabel in the ultimate bad girl role of Uta.

Robert Lasardo commented, “It was clear to me Kenny and Devon were serious about showcasing a fully developed character arc with which I could finally show some range. I feel it is my most ambitious effort to date.”

Because our posting of the 15 Of The Creepiest Things Kids Have Said To Their Parents yesterday was so well received, we went out to find even more scary things that kids have said. We just have to post it again and during the night time too so that you can enjoy the full spine-tingling effects of reading these stories.

This batch of stories came about when a redditor posted on Reddit the question, “What is the scariest thing a kid has said to you?”

What is up with creepy kids? Don’t they have better things to say? Or were these kids possessed or could see things that we adults couldn’t? Regardless, we’re not taking any baby-sitting gigs any time soon.
