Scream Factory Announces Class of 1984, Supernova, and a Blacula Double-Feature Blu-ray for 2015

Scream Factory releasing Blacula and Supernova on Blu-RayA few days ago it was a Love at First Bite/Once Bitten double feature. Scream Factory is continuing its “Shocktober” surprises with word that Supernova, Class of 1984, and a double dose of Blacula are headed to Blu-ray next year.

For those that like their blacksploitation with a twist of horror, Scream Factory will honor Black History Month by releasing Blacula and its lesser sequel, Scream Blacula Scream, together as adouble-feature Blu-ray this February.

The 1972 original that redefined the term “bloodsucka” starred the late great William Marshall as an African prince transformed into a vampire by the bite of Dracula himself. Marshall reprised the role a year later for the sequel that saw the Black Prince of Darkness resurrected via voodoo to raise more hell while terrorizing Pam Grier.

Scream Factory caught everyone unexpected with the unlikely announcement that they would be giving the Blu treatment to the sexy sci-fi thriller Supernova, a motion picture far more deserving of a shoddy Mill Creek release than the extra mile Scream Factory goes to. This one’s a real head-scratcher since the movie was an enormous flop upon its release, the reviews were scathing, and, honestly, when was the last time you ever heard anyone mention Supernova?

Supernova is more noteworthy for all the behind-the-scenes turmoil surrounding its production than the film itself. Geoffrey Wright was originally scheduled to direct it, only to quit weeks before shooting due to MGM tinkering with the script. Then the great Walter Hill was hired to direct, but MGM was so displeased with his cut, the $90,000,000 film was shelved for some time until Jack Sholder was brought in to do reshoots and Francis Ford Coppola was recruited to re-edit the movie in a last ditch effort to salvage it. When Supernova was finally released in January 2000, the directing credit went to the fictional name “Thomas Lee” due to the famous “Alan Smithee” credit having just been retired.

No extras have been announced as of yet, but rest assured if there’s a documentary chronicling the turmoil that was the making of Supernova, it will probably be worth the purchase price alone.

You’d expect so much better from a science fiction film starring the likes of James Spader (“The Blacklist”), Angela Bassett (“American Horror Story”) , Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba), Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Peter Facinelli (Twilight), Wilson Cruz (“My So-Called Life”) ,and Robin Tunney (The Craft).

Supernova explodes onto DVD January 15, 2015. That exactly 15 years and a day from its January 14, 2000, US theatrical release date.

Lastly, sometime next spring Scream Factory will be releasing to Blu for the first time ever Mark L. Lester’s violent 1982 high school vengeance cult classic Class of 1984. Here’s what Scream Factory had to say about the film on its Facebook page:

Although this is not a “horror film” in the true sense of the word, we thought it was suitably violent, edgy, and dark enough to warrant inclusion in the brand (not to mention it has a strong following). The director himself – Mark L. Lester – is very on board with this strategy as well. Those of you who love the film know what a gem it is and that it sports a great cast that includes Perry King (Mandingo, “Riptide”), Roddy McDowell (Fright Night, The Legend of Hell House), Lisa Langlois (Deadly Eyes, Happy Birthday to Me), Timothy Van Patten (“The Sopranos”), and even Michael J. Fox in an early role.

Given that Class of 1984 is being billed as a Special Collector’s Edition, we can expect this one to be fully loaded with all sorts of extras. With any luck this will soon lead to a Blu-ray of Lester’s sci-fi reboot of the premise, Class of 1999. Now that’s a Scream Factory Blu-ray I’d scream for!

Stay tuned for word on the varying disc extras. Heck, stay tuned because who knows what titles Scream Factory will next announce in the coming days. Come on, The Vindicator! Come on, Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge!

WolfCop (UK DVD)

WolfCopStarring Leo Fafard, Amy Matysio, Jonathan Cherry, Sarah Lind

Directed by Lowell Dean

Distributed by Studiocanal

Sheriff’s Deputy Lou Garou (Fafard) is an alcoholic mess. Well known in the local community of Woodhaven for being wholly ineffective in the delivery of his law-keeping duties, he’s the kind of guy who does little more than saunter from drink to drink with a badge on his chest and a gun on his belt – much to the chagrin of his boss and pity of his co-workers.

Considering his raging predilection for the demon drink, Lou’s well versed in the art of waking up in strange places, in strange beds and/or in a physical state of disrepair. Still, his familiarity with such events offers little consolation when he wakes up after being seized by an apparent cult while investigating strange goings-on in the local woods. Finding that a pentagram has been carved into his torso and that his facial hair seems to grow back as quickly as it can be shaved are only the beginning of Lou’s issues, as when the next full moon hits, he gruesomely transforms into a hulking werewolf.

Teaming up with his friend Willy (Cherry), Lou sets about trying to get to the bottom of what the cult has done to him and, in turn, uncovers a generations-old conspiracy of evil which will force him to embrace the wolf within and unleash his newfound strength if he’s to get out the other end alive.

WolfCop obviously isn’t a serious film by any stretch of the imagination, but perhaps its greatest strength is how well it manages to keep a straight face while dishing out a constant stream of self-aware ludicrousness. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the script allows its characters to play within the confines of its absurdities, balancing the serious with a healthy slathering of the organic comedy that naturally flows from them. The humour is rarely forced, feeling very well measured and judged, which in turn allows it become an integral part of the story rather than a heaped-on layer. Similarly pleasing is the film’s refusal to preach or judge its characters. It would be an easy path to take to “save” Lou from his alcoholism by seeing him embrace his new power, ditch the booze and become a better cop – but not so, here. When beasting out in wolf form, Lou not only gets the balls to seriously mess up some bad guys, but does so while swigging booze like Popeye swigs spinach.

Bringing this all to life is a (for the most part) excellent cast. Fafard is great as the weary human Lou, but truly embraces the role with fervour once the makeup is on and he’s tearing up the set in a big, hairy, old-school costume. Sarah Lind entrances as the sultry love interest, local bar owner Jessica, while Amy Matysio’s cop Tina takes a little time to grow on you. Once she lets her hair down, though, she really comes into her own. Stealing the show, however, is Jonathan Cherry as Willie. The guy is hilarious and seems to be loving every single moment of his involvement here.

There are many memorable moments to be found throughout WolfCop, including some fantastic transformations (one sporting a howlingly painful-looking penis metamorphosis) and a general load of fun as Lou slashes his way through local drug dealers, rips off arms and faces and pisses all over disrespectful graffiti artists. That’s not even to mention the simultaneously hilarious and deeply uncomfortable girl-on-wolf sex scene set to the strains of ’80s ballad ‘Moonlight Desires.’

It isn’t all great, though, as even at a scant 75 minutes, WolfCop begins to run out of steam quite noticeably during the final act. The climactic forest battle between Lou, the uncovered conspirators and an angered drug gang feels clunky in comparison to what has come before, knocking the pacing off as it struggles to get the most out of what remaining fumes it has in the tank. The action sequences, as filled as they are with some lovely physical effects work, lack a degree of confidence in their performance and editing that leaves them less fulfilling than they should be – especially during the aforementioned forest showdown.

Still, WolfCop is an endearing flick that happily bathes itself in an ’80s aesthetic and playful excess. Much to its credit, it never slips up tonally and really does try its best to put a real story around the easy draw of its basic concept. It’s goofy, irreverent fun that easily makes for an undemanding, entertaining time. Plus, it even has a ‘Maniac Cop 2′-style bespoke rap song over the end credits! C’mon!

Studiocanal’s UK DVD release of WolfCop comes with a 45-minute ‘Behind the Scenes’ featurette that covers quite a lot during its running time, moving from the film’s initial conception and search for funding, through to the premiere screening and everything in between. It’s good stuff. Backing that up is a mildly entertaining music video for an awful indie-rock track entitled “Henry” by Rah Rah, followed by a short gag reel, some promo clips and a few trailers (including what appears to be the initial sales trailer produced by the team as a concept while seeking funding).

Breck Eisner is directing the film, which sees a semi-immortal witch hunter (Diesel) wandering the streets of modern New York City who is forced to partner with his natural enemy, a female witch (Rose Leslie). The two must stop a villainous witch queen from obtaining a relic and unleashing a plague upon humanity.

Mark Canton is producing via his Mark Canton Productions banner along with Bernie Goldmann and Diesel via his One Race Entertainment banner. Erik Feig, Geoff Shaevitz, and Matthew Janzen oversee the project for the studio.

Synopsis
Five hundred years ago, war raged between humankind and witches, vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe, including Kaulder (Vin Diesel), a valiant warrior who managed to slay an all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments before her death, the Queen exacted her revenge by cursing Kaulder with immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Kaulder has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones.

Today, he is the only one of his kind–-the last witch hunter. With the help of Father Dolan, a Catholic priest, and a mystical arsenal hidden beneath New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, he continues to pursue the renegades and outlaws who endanger humanity. Chief among their adversaries is Belial, a powerful rebel witch who Kaulder believes has found a way to restore the Queen Witch to power and reignite her campaign to destroy the human world.

With the help of Chloe, a goodhearted young witch (Rose Leslie), Kaulder sets out to stop Belial before he can set his plan in motion, but allies in unexpected places keep the evil witch one step ahead in a cunning cat-and-mouse pursuit that will determine the survival of the human race.

From a Whisper to a Scream Factory Blu-ray

It’s October and it’s been at least 72 hours so it must be time for Scream Factory to announce another film getting the Blu-ray treatment in 2015. They’re hoping the news of this Vincent Price flick will make your excitement level go from A Whisper to a Scream.

Scream Factory revealed today that the 1987 horror anthology flick A Whisper to a Scream, which I believe was originally released under the title The Offspring, will be coming to Blu-ray this February. The legendary Vincent Price made one of his final appearances alongside Clu Gulager (Return of the Living Dead, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2), Cameron Mitchell (The Toolbox Murders, Silent Scream), and Susan Tyrell (Angel) in this quadrilogy of terror from director Jeff Burr (Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Pumpkinhead 2).

The uncle of an executed murderess relates four stories of his hometown, Oldfield, to a reporter: an elderly man pursues a romance with a younger woman, even to the grave and beyond…a wounded man on the run from creditors is rescued by a backwoods hermit with the secret to eternal life…a glass-eating carny pays the ultimate price for looking for love on the outside…and Civil War soldiers are held captive by a household of orphans with strange intentions for them.

Artwork you see is final, though Scream Factory hopes to make it reversible with imagery reflecting the The Offspring release title.

Extras will be announced before year’s end.

At this rate expect another Scream Factory announcement before week’s end – if not sooner.

The third entry in The Purge franchise is now official. Deadline is reporting that James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first two, will write the third with an eye to direct his storyline about a land where one night of the year, murder is legal and terrible things happen those unlucky enough to not be locked up tight in their homes.

I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become,” DeMonaco tells Deadline, “and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise.
