Amok Time Unveils World’s First Herbert West Action Figure

Dr. Herbert West’s road to the toy shelf has been a whole lot rockier than most of his horror icon pals, various issues over the years preventing planned toys from ever actually being produced. That long journey finally reaches its end in the coming months, as Amok Time is hard at work on bringing the very first Re-Animator action figure into our lives.

Over on their Facebook page today, the toy company unveiled prototype images of their upcoming Herbert West figure, which will be a part of their Monstarz line and is set to include a slew of totally awesome accessories.

Pictured along with the articulated action figure are Dr. Hill’s severed head from the first film and even Dr. Hill’s severed-and-winged head from Bride of Re-Animator, along with a syringe and the sequel’s finger/eyeball monstrosity.

Check out the images below, and keep in mind that what you’re looking at is merely a prototype. As Amok Time notes, “arm articulation will be added, paint will have a few changes and eye glass lenses will be clearer than in the pictures.”

Halloween 4 Blu-ray Replacement Disc Could Be Coming Soon

It’s a shame that one of the best movies in Anchor Bay and Scream Factory’s Halloween: The Complete Collection Blu-ray release, Halloween 4, was marred by severe audio sync issues that prevent anyone in their right mind from enjoying the experience. Thankfully, that looks to be changing soon.

Anchor Bay, and others, claim this issue was present on their previous Blu-ray release of Halloween 4, though when I covered that disc back in 2012, I never saw these issues and still don’t. I’m pretty sensitive to that sort of defect, too.  It could’ve been an issue relegated to certain players/receivers, though the disc offered in the new collection appears to be impacting far more people.  As such, expect a Halloween 4 Blu-ray replacement swap soon.

This is according to Bill Hunt, who posted over at The Digital Bits that Anchor Bay and Scream Factory are preparing to issue a disc replacement program “soon.”

“I’m told that a BD replacement program will be announced soon for the Halloween 4 disc in the set that has an audio sync problem. We’ll give you the details as soon as Anchor Bay and Scream make them official. “

This seems to be legit as you’ll notice the set has stopped being sold by Amazon, even though they continue to fulfill orders taken by a different vendor.

For those who don’t know, the problems start around the 45:30 mark, when Jamie is wandering the streets alone, having lost her group of trick-or-treaters, before bumping into Rachael. The characters’ lips are clearly not matching up with their words, some lines much more obviously than others. The issue persists for a good ten-minute chunk before correcting itself.

Syfy's 12 MonkeysSyfy has been rather coy about revealing when we’ll be seeing the network’s take on “12 Monkeys,” saying little other than that it’s premiering early next year in January; but now that the New York Comic Con is under way, they’ve announced an official release date and sent out a batch of new photos along with the details of the show’s NYCC panel.

From the Press Release
Syfy’s anticipated adventure thriller “12 Monkeys” will make its series premiere on Friday, January 16, 2015, at 9pm ET/PT.

Inspired by the classic blockbuster film, which commemorates its 20th anniversary next year, “12 Monkeys” explores the provocative story of a time traveler from a decimated future in a high-stakes race against the clock. Utilizing a dangerous and untested method of time travel, he journeys from 2043 to the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will all but annihilate the human race.

12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford (as time-traveler Cole), Amanda Schull (Dr. Cassandra Railly), Kirk Acevedo (Ramse), Barbara Sukowa (Jones), and Noah Bean (Aaron Marker). Additional key recurring roles include Tom Noonan “(Damages,” “Hell on Wheels”) as a mysterious villain and Emily Hampshire (“Rookie Blue”) as mental patient Jennifer Goines.

Syfy and Universal Cable Productions will uncage “12 Monkeys” at New York Comic Con this weekend with a panel on Saturday, October 11th, at 5pm ET headlined by series producers Natalie Chaidez, Terry Matalas, and Travis Fickett. Series star Hampshire also stops by to discuss her role, which was portrayed by Brad Pitt in the original feature film. Her character is the show’s wild card, a brilliant and unpredictable mental patient who may or may not be tied in to the Twelve Monkeys’ conspiracy to destroy the world with a virus.

The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Atlas Entertainment, producer of the original theatrical film. Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven (American Hustle, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle, The International) will executive produce. Roven served as producer on the original film. Jake Kurily will serve as Atlas’ producer on the series. Natalie Chaidez (“In Plain Sight,” “V,” “Heroes”) is the executive producer/showrunner, and Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (“Nikita”), who co-wrote the pilot, will serve as co-executive producers.

Independence Day 2 – Jeff Goldblum Offers Update

Things have been pretty damned quiet concerning the status of the Independence Day sequel(s), but thankfully Jeff Goldblum is here to blast away our fears. Read on for the latest.

I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon,” Goldblum tells TIME.

Goldblum noted though that it’s not official, director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin (the pair shared writing credits on the original film) have told him there’s a part for him in the sequel, which appears increasingly inevitable.

Fox has brought Carter Blanchard on board to re-write the first draft of the script, penned by James Vanderbilt. Blanchard previously wrote a couple episodes of the TV series “Good vs. Evil” and is currently working on Oculus director Mike Flanagan’s thriller Diver.

No plot details have been revealed for the sequel, tentatively titled ID Forever: Part 1.

Roland Emmerich is still attached to direct with Dean Devlin set to produce. Emmerich will also produce along with Harald Kloser.

The 1996 blockbuster Independence Day hit theaters on July 3, 1996, and went on to gross a still-impressive $817 million worldwide. Look for the new flick in theatres on July 1, 2016 — or almost exactly 20 years after the original hit the big screen.

Stay tuned.

Dead 2, The (Blu-ray / DVD)

The Dead 2Starring Joseph Millson, Meenu Mishra, Anand Krishna Hoyal

Directed by Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford

Distributed by Anchor Bay

In my “Z Nation” preview I postulated that it is difficult to innovate the zombie portion of a zombie movie since the physical constraints really inhibit the creativity. Zombies have to be physically human, yet function as a force of nature, and as such don’t really exist as characters. As a result, most zombie films have decided to leave their mark not by interesting use of zombies, but rather by using the character drama to propose interesting and difficult moral dilemmas. While films like Day of the Dead show that we can buck this trend, zombie movies are for the most part survival narratives with more headshots.

While the Ford brothers’ The Dead 2 certainly doesn’t break the mold, it bends it enough that it piqued my interest. Instead of some distant and external threat, dealt with only when food, water, or plot are scarce, the undead in The Dead 2 are unforgettably ever present. Almost every shot and scene contains the undead in some way, and even when not a present threat, they serve as a constant reminder of the threat of being eaten alive. Typical car rides are backdropped with zombies in the countryside, and every pit stop becomes a ticking clock counting down to the inevitable zombie swarm.

Even in scenes where the primary threats are non-undead (e.g., thirst or starvation), the zombies are still in the background, shambling away, unrelenting. It is this level of oppressive omnipresence that gives the zombies real weight. In their own right they almost become a character, as unforgiving and determined as any slasher film predator.

As you may have deduced from the film’s earlier title, The Dead 2: India, it takes place in India. I really cannot think of a better setting for a zombie movie and am frankly surprised more titles don’t take advantage of its packed slums and staggering income inequality. The movie does an excellent job of combining India’s dense population and vast countryside into a truly unique obstacle. The establishing shots of main character Nicholas (Joseph Millson) repairing a giant windmill while rappelling from the side is truly breathtaking and visually sets the stage for the massive journey that lies between him and saving the woman carrying his child. Little touches throughout give the film a distinctly foreign personality. Crammed buses stuffed with luggage and garb varying from traditional to modern are just two examples of the many little details that make the film seem real.

It is here, however, that my praise stops, as the rest of the film is just okay. The only glaringly bad part is the foreign actors, but seeing as how this is the first film any of them have been in, I can overlook their quality for the level of authenticity they bring to the production. The Dead 2 also has a bad habit of explaining key plot points out of fear that you might have forgotten them. The ending is a pretty glaring example, but there is also a conspicuous scene where Nicholas remembers his companion Javed (Anand Krishna Goyal) telling him about his favorite fruit to forage. It was bizarrely out of place as it wasn’t but maybe 30 minutes prior that they had found and eaten the fruit. This wasn’t just random fruit either; it was from some prickly ass crazy spike tree with strange hairy mini-coconuts. Don’t worry, Ford brothers; I’ll remember the murderfruit tree. You don’t have to remind me.

Another issue is that the movie isn’t quite sure how to put the character in real danger. It is worth clarifying at this point that the zombies are slow zombies, and their strength is about equal to a WWE superstar’s first pin: Their grab looks intense, but you will surely get out of it before the three count. The methods Nicholas uses to get out of hairy situations range from strapping on an industrial fan and parasailing away to just shooting his way out.

At first the zombies, unending and unrelenting as they are, seem tense and frightening. However, despite complaining that his ammo is running low, the main character never runs out of bullets and seems to only grow more confident about his supply as the movie goes on. At one point he drops a revolver, which the camera focuses on, and I assumed the hero was now unarmed. Lo and behold, he pulls out a new gun from his pocket and begins firing away. Well, what the hell was the point of him dropping the first one, guys? Did you want to switch guns and come up with a realistic explanation of why he doesn’t arm his eight-year-old companion? I think I could have come up with one or two reasons not to give an eight-year-old a gun, Ford brothers.

As far as the plot is concerned, it’s fine. Far too much of the movie is spent traveling from point A to point B, but it gives you some time to soak in the scenery and learn a little bit more about the characters. There’s some mysticism, but it’s irrelevant. It’s a zombie movie, and people fight zombies and feel bad about doing bad things. Questions are raised as to what humanity has done to deserve this, and answers are proposed regarding karmic imbalance and sins of man. Standard religious zombie questions with some Indian flair. The film does weigh in interestingly on the Indian family structure, but it’s all so isolated from the main plot that it comes off as derivative.

In the director interview found on the disc’s bonus features, a mister William Chainsaw interviews the Ford brothers about a variety of topics. When the questions are good, they pertain to the movie. This is not always the case, though, as sometimes Mr. Chainsaw’s questions are based on the last word that came out of a Ford brother’s mouth.

To demonstrate, early in the interview Will Chainsaw asks the brothers why they chose India. After a complex answer about the setting being perfect for its beauty, geography, and population, they end by stating that they were also drawn to the rich and spiritual culture. To this, Willy Chainsaw asks if the Ford brothers themselves are spiritual. They seem taken aback by this question, as while it is technically relevant by word association, it has nothing to do with either the movie or what they were just talking about. Overall you can get some good stuff out of the interview, but it is very long and padded with some unnecessary montages that make it not really worth checking out.

Also included are several deleted scenes for those of you who are curious about what didn’t make the cut.

If I were to stack up all the things I liked about The Dead 2 against all the things I didn’t like, the pile of dislikes would be higher. However, what I did like about The Dead 2, namely the use of setting and zombies, I liked so much that it easily outweighs the bad. It is a great watch for any zombie fan, but I really doubt it will drop any jaws. I’d recommend it to any true blue zombie/horror fan without hesitation, but it doesn’t break that barrier into mainstream enjoyment the way Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later did.

Dead and the Damned II, The (DVD)

The Dead and the DamnedStarring Robert Tweten, Iren Levy, John J. Welsh

Directed by Rene Perez

Distributed by Inception

After the debacle that was the first The Dead and the Damned, I really couldn’t have had a care in the world if a sequel were to ever breathe life, and after receiving word that there indeed was a second coming in the works from director Rene Perez, there was an overwhelming sense of “here we go again” flashing through my thick skull like a neon beacon in the night. Originally titled The Dead the Damned and the Darkness, it was then whittled down to just having a “II” stuck at the end of the original title – so without any further pointless info, on with the dissection.

Overall, this (surprisingly) wasn’t a half-bad watch… wasn’t a half-good watch either, but even though I expected this film to stink to high hell, there was a sense of abandonment from the first go-around, and that I believe was the sticking point to its mild success. Whereas the first movie dealt with the old West and outlaw zombies, we now have a progression hundreds of years into the future, and a full-blown apocalypse is on our hands.

Lt. Colonel Sawyer (Robert Tweten) has a very simple mission: provide a proper burial for his family at sea. However, the issue is that he’s got to make it across hundreds of miles that contain armies of the undead. Outfitted with a hi-tech body armor setup and the accuracy of a certifiable marksman, he encounters a mute female survivor named Stephanie (Iren Levy), who luckily hasn’t been infected with the virus that turns the living into a flesh-craving lunatic but is now marked by the remaining male survivors as a potential breeding target (much like 28 Days Later).

Sawyer’s mission has taken on a whole new emphasis as his protection of the lone female at times seems to outweigh the interment of his own loved ones. So there you have it – laid out on a cardboard platter for you: no muss, no fuss. I’d love to offer some more along the lines of intriguing plot twists and character reformation, but the end result is a zombie shoot-out that looks like one of the multitudes you could check out on Syfy any old day of the week.

Not that it’s a complete loss. Some of the performances are decent for a low-budget film, and the production looks a little better than something shot on a backstage set. There’s a nice splashing of gore to wet the audience, and if you’re able to forgive some shoddy costuming (many of the zombie looks are masks with BAD cover-ups on the seams), then there’s a passable ministration to the film.

While no real connection between the first and second movie exists (there’s a short explanation near the movie’s close), if you’re simply willing to accept this as another run-of-the-mill zombie shoot-em-up, you should give it a go. But don’t expect to reap a bountiful array of rewards from it as you’d most likely be damned.

Hot on the heels of a new clip from earlier in the day, we now have some new artwork for the best horror movie I’ve seen all year, The Babadook (review). Check it out, and keep your eyes open for this one.

Look for the critically acclaimed spookshow on November 28th.

Written and directed by Jennifer Kent, the film stars Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear.

Synopsis
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6-year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control; he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.
