Midnight Son Coming Home from Image

One flick we are ecstatic to see find a home is the Martin-esque vampire flick Midnight Son. Lord knows we've been talking about it forever, and now you're gonna get a chance to sink your teeth into it!

From the Press Release
An isolated life can create maladies and malaise…frightening conditions that will push the victim to the brink of despair. On July 17th, Image Entertainment will release Midnight Son: a twisting, terrifying tale of vampirism and humanity and how the two conditions can intertwine. Directed by Scott Leberecht, a well-known name on the festival circuit (Seattle Film International Festival, San Francisco Short Film Festival, Dragon*Con Short Film Festival), Midnight Son squeezes new blood out of a genre that has become all too familiar. Including an audio commentary with Leberecht and stars from the film, Midnight Son will be available on DVD for an SRP of $27.97.

Jacob (Zak Kilberg, Zombie Strippers!, “Lincoln Heights”) is a young man with a rare skin disorder that forces him to avoid exposure to the sun…confining him to a life of seclusion and shadow. As his symptoms worsen, Jacob’s mental and physical health begin to crumble, forcing him to cross a barrier that few would consider: drinking human blood.

When Jacob meets Mary (Maya Parish, “How I Met Your Mother”), who is as lonely and damaged as himself, he falls in love. But hope is countered by his increasingly violent tendencies and the local law enforcement, which is now focusing on him as a prime suspect in a series of grisly murders.

Wowing audiences when FEARnet premiered it in January and a hit at Cinequest, FrightFest, Fantasia, Toronto After Dark, Maelstrom International Film Festival and A Night of Horror, Midnight Son is a tale of sickness and how desperation will make one consider even the most terrible of cures. Terrifying, yet intellectual as well, it allows the mind to take that final step into fear’s abyss.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 2

$

"My name is Anne Wilkes. And I am..." "I know," he said. "You're my number-one fan." "Yes," she said, smiling. "That's just what I am."

How many times had Stephen King heard that from his millions of number-one fans before he finally turned the obsessive love of his Constant Readers into the subject of one of his most memorable, horrific and claustrophobic works, Misery? Before taking a short break to honor Debbie Rochon and The Blair Witch Project with Tips of the Scalpel for Indie Horror Month, we brought you Stephen King, Part 1. Now we're back to continue the story with Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: Stephen King, Part 2: The 80's.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 2

The start of King's career was prolific, beginning with Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Shining, but the incredible amount of legendary horror that King produced throughout his life is simply mind-boggling. King created nearly two-dozen stories that would go on to be feature films or mini-series in the 80's alone. And he kicked off the decade with a bang. In 1980, King brought us Firestarter the book about young Charlie McGee who's rage, when gone unchecked, had explosively dangerous results. The star-studded film (which we're quite sure was the only on-screen collaboration between Drew Barrymore and Art Carney) followed in 1984. But King was just getting started.

King returned with in 1981 with Cujo where he again showed his mastery of trapping his characters into inescapable situations and watching them struggle. King's book and the 1983 film featuring Dee Wallace, single-handedly did for dogs what Jaws did for sharks and even now, more than 30 years later, it's common to hear a vicious dog referred to as Cujo.

King released The Running Man in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. The story would be re-released later in The Bachman Books and made into a film starring not one, but two future United States governors, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura (so difficult not to slip "The Body" in there…but he was a governor). One can only speculate how much, if any, inspiration Suzanne Collins drew from The Running Man for her uber-hit The Hunger Games books, but one does have to acknowledge the similarities. And I do think Ventura would have made an excellent Heymitch Abernathy.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 2

All that is wonderful, but the years of 1982-83 were the most impressive of the decade. In '82, King released The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, the first book in what would become a truly epic tale…but we're going to put that story on the back burner for now. We'll revisit The Dark Tower and The Stand in Tip of the Scalpel: Stephen King Part 3: The Epics. What we do want to highlight is an incredible collection called Different Seasons. This one set of four stories contains three tales that would go on to be incredible films. Spawning from Different Seasons was The Body, the story that would go on to become Stand By Me, the film which King calls his first successful translation to film of any of his works, in 1986.

Also contained in Different Seasons are Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, which would go on to become a beloved film, truncating title. And the dark Nazi war criminal themed story, Apt Pupil, which became a powerful movie featuring Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro.

This incredible list goes on and on…and eventually one must ask if King's continuing success was simply due to his past successes. But just looking at the books makes it clear that King continued to pump out incredible work as the decade went on. In 1983, all he did was deliver Christine, Pet Sematery and Cycle of the Werewolf which would go on to be the film Silver Bullet in 1985. Christine would also hit the big screen in 1983 while Pet Semetary came out of Hollywood in 1989.

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Stephen King Part 2

Other stories that would go on to become feature films were Thinner and The Dark Half. The short stories The Mist and The Raft from the Skeleton Crew collection would eventually hit the big screen with The Raft adapted into a segment for Creepshow 2 and The Mist would become a third collaboration between King and Frank Darabont (previously creating The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption together). Darabont would bring several actors from The Mist, Jeffrey DuMunn, Laurie Holden and Melissa McBride, on to a little television show he would create three years later in 2010 called The Walking Dead. And we mustn't forget the coulrophobic's worst nightmare, Pennywise the Clown from King's 1986 book It, which became adapted into a television mini-series.

The last story we must discuss is the one that brought us the quote that began the article. Stephen King released Misery in 1987. In this tale he absolutely perfected the claustrophobic theme he used so masterfully in earlier stories like The Shining and Cujo and would revisit in future works like Gerald's Game. Misery had to be considered one of King's most effective novels, and that was even before the film came along in 1990. Kathy Bates would win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Annie Wilkes. But as impressive as an Academy Award is, Misery is most memorable for having one of the most cringe-worthy scenes in the history of horror. That's right, the hobbling of Paul Sheldon.

For those who don't remember (which should read, for those that haven't seen the film, because if you saw Misery, you remember). This was the scene where Annie put a block of wood between Paul Sheldon's ankles then smashed his foot with a sledge-hammer, completely destroying the bones in his foot and legs. I can safely say that there is not a person in their right mind that can watch that scene without curling their toes and cringing. Yikes! In King's book, Annie actually used an axe and removed a foot, but something about seeing that ankle bend onscreen as it did seemed even worse.

The sheer volume of work Stephen King has done in the name of horror is amazing, and the 80's was an excellent time for his productivity. But fear not King fans, there is one more chapter in the Scalpel tribute to this master of the macabre. But for now, we will again say thank you, and give a Doctor Gash Tip of the Scalpel to the 1980's work of the great Stephen King.

Horror Newcomer Carly Oates Talks Pretty Dead

We were recently pleasantly surprised upon screening the micro-budget indie film Pretty Dead, the most impressive aspect of which is certainly the performance of Carly Oates in the lead role of Regina. This week she sat down with Dread Central to discuss the film.

"I had worked with Ben (Wilkins, Pretty Dead director) before, and he called and said I have something I want you to screen test for," Oates said when describing how she became involved in the project. "But afterward I started thinking that there was no script and it was just kinda out there. So I told them I was going to pass on it. But Ben was like 'No, no, no…let me get you a script. You're gonna love it.' He sent me the script and I still wasn't sure because it was such an extreme story that's really a blending of fantasy and reality. I tend to be more of a dramatic actor and I wasn't sure how we were going to marry the two. So I started doing research and found out there were a lot more similarities between my character, Regina, and myself than I ever would have expected.".

Horror Newcomer Carly Oates Talks Pretty Dead

And a good call it was by Wilkins as he needed a truly beautiful actress to fill the role and make the film work, as those who have seen the film will attest. It's a love story that pushes the limits of commitment for Oates' co-star Ryan Shogren.

Oates noted that as Pretty Dead (review here) is a retrieved footage film, Wilkins wanted to keep the shots as realistic as possible. "Ben was really creative with finding a way to create situations where it would make sense that there would be a camera there and not having some random person just kinda hanging out that just happens to have a camera."

The physicality of the role was certainly something that Oates had to adjust to. "When you have a project with a small budget, you're doing a lot of guerilla filmmaking and I was in a real straitjacket and I remember I had this custom mask over my face and I'm like, 'Really, I'm going to have to wear that with a straitjacket?' It's uncomfortable but it helps with the reality of understanding this is what it would have been like. I mean, you have pounds of makeup and pads on your body and a straitjacket and you can't move your arms, crazy hair that's sticking to the makeup on your face. I had to do some breathing because I was a little short of freaking out. For me, it helped me feel what she would have been experiencing."

Oates recalls one particularly intense shoot. "There is a scene where I'm strapped down to a gurney and Ben is off camera screaming, 'Keep going! Keep fighting them! You have inhuman strength.' I remember at the end of the scene he calls out, 'You okay, Carly?' And I was like, 'Fuck you, Ben. Fuck you.' I had nothing left and it was the most honest response. I felt like I had run a marathon."

If you'd like more info on Carly Oates, check out her Facebook page and cruise over to the official Pretty Dead website.

Oates is open to future horror projects and if her performance in Pretty Dead is any indication, she'll be a knockout again. Oates is not your average scream queen…she bites back! Keep an eye on her!

Hunger Games Director Gary Ross Not Returning for Sequel Catching Fire

$

Well then, here's some interesting news... it's no secret that anyone who's locked into working on the next couple of sequels in The Hunger Games franchise would pretty much be set for life upon completion, but director Gary Ross has other plans.

According to The Playlist before cameras can start rolling on The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, this fall, Lionsgate will need to find a director. Gary Ross has officially exited the franchise and will not direct the sequel, formally giving Lionsgate and Summit his notice earlier this week that he will not be coming back.

It seems the burning desire simply isn't there to spend another couple of years with Katniss in the Capitol. That, and apparently Lionsgate hit him with a lowball salary offer that probably didn't help the situation. Ross already has a fairly lucrative career as a screenwriter (and rewriter), and money isn't really the issue for him. Simply put, the filmmaker is looking to change things up for his next effort.

Can't blame him there.

The sequel to the 2008 bestseller continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.

O Dios Mio! Paranormal Activity Getting a Latino Cousin!

Some really interesting news coming out of Paramount to kick off your Easter weekend. Not only is the Paranormal Activity crew working on the fourth entry into the franchise, but there's a Latino-flavored offshoot in the works as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the new project will reunite producers Jason Blum and Oren Peli with Christopher Landon, the writer of the second and third installments of the Paranormal movies.

Landon will write and direct the project, described by sources as a “cousin” to the Paranomal movies but not a sequel or reboot nor a spin-off. The real kicker is that the movie will be Latino-themed. It will star a Latino cast and will tackle Catholic-based paranormal mythology. It will not, however, be in Spanish.

The aim is to make the micro-budgeted movie in the next several months.

Paramount could potentially have the movie ready for an early January 2013 slot. This past January the studio released the Catholic-centered found-footage horror movie The Devil Inside; the movie was made for about $1 million and grossed $53 million domestically and $46 million internationally. The three Paranomal movies have grossed more than $575 million.

More on this as we get it!

B-Sides: If I Come in Peace, Will You Touch Me Tonight?

$

0

I don’t know what the hell Shooting Star’s “Touch Me Tonight” has to do with Dolph Lundgren fighting a drug dealer from outer space that fires killer CDs from its wrists, but since it plays over the closing credits of I Come in Peace and I Come in Peace is one of the all-time great b-movies...

Craig R. Baxley’s criminally underrated 1991 sci-fi action thriller I Come in Peace stars Dolph Lundgren as a Houston cop who never breaks a promise partnered with a snarky government agent to investigate a series of murders committed by a 9-foot albino alien drug dealer that steals heroin from human pushers to inject it into the hearts of victims so it can then stab a tube in their skull to suck out the supercharged endorphins it makes their brain produce; endorphins, apparently, being a priceless intergalactic narcotic.

And let’s not forget the thing on its wrist that fires razor sharp CDs which zip homing in on the human body’s natural electro-magnetism, which much be centralized in the neck region given how it always seems to instinctively slash people’s throats with perfect precision.

What any of that has in common with the lyrics to the song “Touch Me Tonight” is anyone’s guess. Not that it really matters since the era from which I Come in Peace (Dark Angel to you non-Americans) hails was known for closing credits song that had little or nothing to do with the movie itself, particularly if the song in question was by a hair band singing about relationships in a non-power ballad format.

Shooting Star was such a band, and “Touch Me Tonight” was the Kansas City, Missouri rockers' biggest hit, reaching #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1989. A year later the song would cap off I Come in Peace mere moments after Dolph Lundgren capped an alien pusher with the immortal line, “And you go in pieces, asshole!”, and b-movie musical immortality would be assured.

Here’s the original music video for Shooting Star’s “Touch Me Tonight” that got a good deal of airplay on MTV in 1989. No Dolph Lundgren or drug dealing spacemen are anywhere in it, which it really could have used since there’s a major Michael Bolton vibe from how the whole thing is shot. Women... can’t live with them, can’t suck out endorphins through a straw without them.

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window in Three Minutes

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window in Three MinutesWe've got an amazingly creative short video to share that will be especially interesting to all you Alfred Hitchcock fans out there. We bring you Jeff Desom's imagining of Rear Window in three minutes. Dig it!

Desom did some incredible computer work to bring the classic film into a brief three-minute retelling of the story. "I dissected all of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and stitched it back together in After Effects," Desom said. "I stabilized all the shots with camera movement in them. Since everything was filmed from pretty much the same angle, I was able to match them into a single panoramic view of the entire backyard without any greater distortions. The order of events stays true to the movie’s plot."

Check out the film in its entirety below, and for more of Desom's quirky genius visit his official website.

Aziz Ansari Joining Jay and Seth vs. The ApocalypseWe haven't gotten an update on the feature film version of Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse in a while, but more casting news has trickled in, this time involving Aziz Ansari of "Parks and Recreation" fame.

Seth and Evan [Goldberg, Rogen's longtime writing partner] are directing it. And it's basically all of us playing ourselves. Me, McBride, Jonah, Seth — everyone's playing themselves, and the bit is James Franco's having a party at his house, and the Apocalypse starts happening."

Filming will take place in New Orleans; look for more soon, and check out the original NSFW trailer below.

Human Centipede Rumor Mill - Udo Kier Replacing Dieter Laser?

Before I type another word, let me be clear ... at this point this story is COMPLETELY UNCONFIRMED. That being said, it's either a great rumor or really smart casting. Read on for the details.

Best Movies Ever is reporting that they have received word that Udo Kier is being pursued by Tom Six to star in The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence). This news comes after a legal dispute between original Pede star Dieter Laser and Six, over Laser backing out of the third film and holding up production.

Could Kier fill Laser scary German shoes? Honestly we can't think of any one else who could. Would it be the same? Absolutely not. Still, for all we know Six could be cooking this whole thing up to bring early controversy to his flick. Who knows?!?

We'll be here listening for ya!

Martin Scorsese Talks Vampires and Zombies

Martin Scorsese Talks Vampires and ZombiesNot really news, however, any time a director the likes of Martin Scorsese starts talking about the creatures of the night who run rampant through our genre, we sit up, take notice, and listen intently.

In a recent interview with GQ, Scorsese discusses why he prefers vampires over zombies ...

"The vampire thing always works for some reason. Always works," Scorsese tells the site. "I happen to like vampires more than zombies. Well, a vampire, quite honestly, you could have a conversation with. He has a sexuality. Zombies, what are you going to do with them? Just keep chopping them up, shooting at them, shooting at them. It's a whole other thing that apparently means a great deal to our culture and our society. There are many, many books written about it and many movies. I saw one in London when I was doing Hugo. I saw one late at night one weekend. It was called Colin, by a young filmmaker [Marc Price]. He shot it, I think, digitally by himself, edited it himself. It was savage. It had an energy that took the zombie idea to another level. Really interesting filmmaking. Disturbing."

Please, Mr. Scorsese ... bring your own brand of zombies and vampires to our genre. We beg of thee!

The Hunger Games Feel the Wrath of the Titans Overseas

It doesn't amount to a hill of beans here in the States as The Hunger Games has already ruined the American Reunion and resunk the Titanic in American cinemas, but overseas? That's far from the story as Wrath of the Titans is kicking a copious amount of box office ass!

Variety reports that in its debut weekend overseas, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Wrath of the Titans (review here) overpowered the previous week's champ The Hunger Games, releasing a crackling $76.1 million from 60 markets to Games' $35.3 million.

Wrath scored chart-topping numbers in the majority of its debut territories over March 30-April 1, though it was bested by Hunger Games in English-speaking markets, led by Australia ($5.1 million for Games; $2.1 million for Wrath) and the U.K. ($4.7 million for Games; $3.5 million for Wrath).

Games has made $17 million and $15.5 million in Oz and Blighty, respectively.

Top results for Wrath, meanwhile, came from Latin America, specifically Mexico ($5.2 million) and Brazil ($4.1 million), and Asia, led by South Korea ($4.3 million).

Wrath debuted as the No. 1 film in China, but because of the local Tomb Sweeping holiday to commemorate ancestors, full results weren't available for print.

As expected, Wrath earned the majority of its opening tally in foreign markets -- a promising start for the $125 million-budgeted pic, which, at $33.5 million domestically, underperformed.
