Joshua LeonardA&E’s “Bates Motel” reopens for business in March of next year, and a familiar face has just checked in for the show’s third season. Rejoice, Blair Witch Project fans, because Joshua Leonard has finally emerged from the woods!

TVLine reported the news today, revealing that Leonard will play James Finnigan, a community college psych professor whose pull towards Norma slowly chips away at his carefully constructed house of cards.

As the website notes, the gig represents a reunion between Leonard and “Bates Motel” star Vera Farmiga, who played husband and wife in 2011’s Higher Ground.

Leonard is the show’s fourth major Season 3 hire, following the casting of Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men”), Tracy Spiridakos (“Revolution”), and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”).

Check out a sneak preview of the upcoming season below, which should whet your appetite for the return of Norman Bates!

Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV Series On Its Way!

0

Shine up your boomsticks and grease your chainsaws! The official word on the long talked about Evil Dead TV series is here! Get ready for “Ash Vs. Evil Dead!”

From the Press Release:
Starz announced today the greenlight of the network’s next original series, the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead. The project reteams the original filmmakers: director Sam Raimi, longtime producing partner Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

The STARZ Original series officially titled “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario, and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity, and the terrors of the Evil Dead.  When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons – personal and literal.  Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

“Starz first worked with Sam and Rob on ‘Spartacus,’ and we are thrilled to be back in business with them,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “With Sam writing and directing and Bruce Campbell returning to the screen, we are certain the show will give Evil Dead fans around the world the fix they’ve been craving.”

“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga.  With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it,” said Sam Raimi.

“I’m really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide – it’s going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious Deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor,” said Bruce Campbell.

“STARZ has always been a great creative partner, and we are excited to be working with them on this project,” said Robert Tapert.

Raimi will direct the first episode. “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” was written by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), and Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”). Sam Raimi will also serve as executive producer along with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” Xena: Warrior Princess”) and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”). Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce, and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) will serve as producer.

The original Evil Dead film followed Ash and his friends, who travel to a cabin in the woods where they unknowingly release demons intent on possessing the living. The film became an international success and is critically lauded to this day as one of the best horror movies of all time. It also spawned a media franchise, including two sequels, as well as video games and comic books and a recent reboot that grossed $97 million worldwide.

The “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” project was packaged by CAA and Craig Jacobson at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller. Marta Fernandez will serve as the executive in charge at Starz.

The series will air on STARZ in 2015. Starz will retain all domestic and international multiplatform rights including television, home entertainment, and digital.

the nerdist Scott Ian's BloodworksPopular parody web series “The Hillywood Show,” featuring comedy sister duo Hilly and Hannah Hindi, has tackled everything from Twilight to “The Vampire Diaries,” and now they’ve set their sights on AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead.”

Watch as Hilly gets “grimy” – Rick Grimes to be exact – and shoots the guts out of zombies to the tune of Queen’s biggest hit, “Another One Bites the Dust.”

The Hindis explain: “Being fans of AMC’S ‘The Walking Dead,’ we really wanted to create a parody that celebrates one of our favorite fandoms. We conceived the concept, took off with it, and ran all the way to Georgia to film! We shot the parody over a course of six days and had an epic adventure. It was as amazing experience to let our obsession and love for the show run wild when creating The Walking Dead Parody.”

This is the first “Hillywood” video to be released with Nerdist Industries since their partnership started in September 2014, allowing the mega-talents to provide even more content. “The Hillywood Show” is now an unstoppable force, and you’ll be able to catch their epic parodies bi-monthly on Nerdist.com!

Dinner for Fiends – Jinxed: Guys, Interrupted

0
0

Back so soon? How did that happen? Over half a year between Dinner for Fiends, and now here we are back in less than a month? Don’t get used to it.

This Dinner for Fiends initially started out as a Foycast. Fini and I were ready to go when I saw Jinx on Twitter responding to someone’s request for more DFF’s stating he couldn’t wait to do it again. So we messaged him, and it turned out he really was ready to go. Then we figured if we don’t at least ask Uncle Creepy if he can do it, we’ll never hear the end of it from him. With that, plans to do a one-hour Foycast ballooned into another near two-hour DFF. My apologies to those of you who would have preferred a Foycast; you’ll just have to wait a little longer.

This will also go down as the Dinner for Fiends where Jinx officially picked up the mantle left behind by Andrew Kasch. By that I mean his phone kept dropping out, forcing the show to a screeching halt. Most of that fun was edited out, but between that and the abrupt ending to the recording, I have no problem proclaiming this episode to be in some way, shape, or form… JINXED!

Myself, Jinx, Fini, and Creepy pretty much pick up where we left off last time, discussing the remainder of the 2014 Halloween offerings and whatever else sprang to mind: Ouija, Annabelle, The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Exists, The Houses that October Built, “The Walking Dead”, “American Horror Story: Freak Show”, Alien: Isolation, See No Evil 2, The Identical(?!?!), Scream Factory’s 2015 slate of horror films, and why Halloween is such an evil, horrible, unholy holiday.

Along the way you can expect the usual assortment of technical difficulties, ball-busting, and the clicking of my mouse that apparently has become Matt Fini’s very own personal “Tell-Tale Heart.”

Exclusive: Go Behind the Scenes of Matthan Harris’ Baphomet

0

Matthan Harris' BaphometDuring the Halloween season we showed you the concept art for the heroes and villains of Matthan Harris’ upcoming film Baphomet, which involves a Satanic cult that uses black magic to attack a family, and today we’re back with a behind-the-scenes look at some of Emmy-nominated FX artist Jeff Farley’s work on the project.

Harris told us, “These props were made by Jeff Farley. There’s a male corpse (brutally mangled and dismembered by a great white shark) and the dorsal/caudal fins of the massive shark.”

“To clarify, Baphomet is NOT a shark film, but it does has a scene involving a brutal shark attack (the incident is caused by a hex). In the film there is a Satanic cult that uses black magic to attack a family in ways that can’t be traced back to them (i.e., hexes that cause brutal animal attacks, miscarriages, suicide, etc.).”

Why a shark of all things? “I chose a great white shark as one of the instruments of terror because I have a fear of them. And Jaws is possibly my favorite movie of all time,” Harris explained. “However, I really hate those terrible CGI shark joke-films that have infiltrated the market. Great whites are such incredible predators, and they deserve better movies… for the shark sequence in Baphomet, my goal is to remind people how terrifying shark attacks are.”

In addition, Harris provided us with a behind-the-scenes video of Farley making his headcast for the film.  He plays the role of Mark Neville, the family’s son-in-law, and he assured us, “Something truly horrific happens to Mark.”

We can’t wait to see what that might be!  Stay tuned for more soon.

Harris serves as writer, director, co-star, and producer with Incisive Pictures on Baphomet. For more info and updates, keep your eyes on the Baphomet Facebook page.

Synopsis:
A family in Northern California celebrates their 24-year-old daughter’s pregnancy. The celebration is interrupted when Satanic cult leader Henrik Brandr unexpectedly visits their ranch. Henrik offers to pay the family a large sum for ownership of their land, claiming it is sacred to his congregation. Jacob Richardson, the father, rejects the offer due to the priceless sentimental value of the ranch. Henrik, displeased, begins to put devastating curses on the Richardsons, trying to force them off their land – even if it means murdering them.

After suffering unexplainable tragedies, the Richardsons seek help from Marybeth, a white witch high priestess. They soon discover a terrible secret about their house, revealing why their land is sacred to the cult. They realize they must protect their house from the cult at all costs, and a violent battle between good and evil ensues.

Fan of The Thing? Check out the Night of the Creature Short Film!

0

nightofthecreatureWe’re just a few weeks away from Thanksgiving, and one of the things we here at Dread Central are most thankful for is up-and-coming indie filmmakers who are willing to share their output with our readers. On tap today we have a new short film to show you: Night of the Creature, an homage to the blood testing scene in John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Adam Murray, the short’s writer and producer, told us how the project came about.

“When I was ten, I watched The Thing on TV at 2 am, during a blizzard, and it scared me so bad that I didn’t watch it again until I was eighteen,” he explained. “It’s one of my favorite movies now, and I’ve been wanting to make a short inspired by it for a long time. Since moving to LA, I’ve become friends with a lot of talented people who were also excited to make this short actually happen.”

Night of the Creature was directed by Alex Jacobs; it stars Ron Babcock, Ed Salazar, Solomon Georgio, and Russel Stepan, who plays the creature.

Murray added, “Russel is a make-up and prop artist, and he made the jacket with all the teeth that’s in the short. Lawrence Mercado and Chris Korn are also make-up artists with whom I’ve worked on a lot of projects. They did all of Russel and Ron’s prosthetics and teeth and added some grossness to the jacket. This literally wouldn’t have been possible to make if it wasn’t for all these people and our crew. I think we did a pretty great job of capturing the tone and look of The Thing, even though it switches to comedy in under 30 seconds. John Carpenter still hasn’t responded to any of my e-mails.”

Enjoy a few behind-the-scenes stills from Night of the Creature below along with the film in its entirety.  Here’s hoping Adam finally hears from Mr. Carpenter himself!

Exclusive: Death Waltz Recording Co. Releasing 30th Anniversary Silent Night, Deadly Night Vinyl Soundtrack

0
0

This year is the 30th anniversary of many classic horror films, one of them being Silent Night, Deadly Night. A highly controversial slasher about a killer Santa, the 1984 film is one of the very best in the body count sub-genre, the visuals as memorable as the delightfully twisted soundtrack.

Here on Dread Central today we’re incredibly excited to break the exclusive news that UK label Death Waltz Recording Company is releasing the Silent Night, Deadly Night soundtrack tomorrow on 30th anniversary vinyl, the two-disc affair including Perry Botkin’s score as well as a full album of original Christmas songs.

Morgan Ames, responsible for the soundtrack’s songs ‘Warm Side of the Door’ and ‘Santa’s Watching,’ recorded eight other horror-tinged Christmas songs for the movie, as the plan was to release a tie-in album. It of course never ended up happening, and Death Waltz presents those songs for the very first time with this release.

The double LP is limited to 400 worldwide, one disc on transparent red and solid white split-color vinyl, and the other on transparent red and transparent green split-color vinyl. There will also be a very limited edition for record stores, one disc on clear green vinyl and the other on clear red.

With original packing artwork by Nick Percival (below), the release comes packaged with a booklet featuring liner notes by composer Perry Botkin, co-executive producer Scott Schneid & writer Michael Hickey. Booklet also features a host of original reviews including many newspaper clips calling for the film to be banned upon its original release.

Botkin’s score is both chaotic and tragic; crashing sounds of distorted percussion are punctuated by both synth and acoustic piano, reflecting the sheer damage that has been done to Billy’s mind,” company owner Spencer Hickman told us. “The end result is both emotional and terrifying, even more so with the selection of original Christmas songs as composed by Morgan Ames. But a word of caution: If you don’t have Silent Night, Deadly Night on the turntable this Christmas we’ll have to tell Billy that you’ve been… naughty. Consider yourselves warned.”

Check out the full track listing below, along with a Dread Central exclusive preview of some of those tracks. Be sure to bookmark Death Waltz Recording Company’s website, as the 30th anniversary double LP will be released TOMORROW!

Poker Night (2014)

Poker NightStarring Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito, Ron Eldard, Beau Mirchoff

Directed by Greg Francis

Distributed by XLRator Media

There’s just no substitute for a solidly formulated crime drama with fast-paced action and a story ripe with twists and turns, all backed up by a stellar cast that you’d swear could pass for actual grizzled cops. Director Greg Francis, whose previous projects have all been crafted for television, jumps into the feature film fellowship with a presentation that will most assuredly cement his place as one bad-ass crime drama kingpin.

The movie brings together some true screen heavyweights, including jack-of-all roles Ron Perlman in the part of Detective Calabrese: a man amongst many law enforcement sleuths who organize a weekly poker game that not only showcases some of the attitudes that have gotten them through some severely tough moments over the years, but also allows the group to spin personal stories that act as a training tool for the newest inductee, Jeter (Beau Mirchoff), an overzealous (and slightly cocky) participant in the fight against crime. His methods could best be described as intractable; yet, he is put firmly in his place at the table when he is dealt in.

Among the game’s attendees we have Bernard (Giancarlo Esposito), Cunningham (Ron Eldard), Davis (Corey Large), and Maxwell (Titus Welliver): an absolutely MISERABLE long-standing member of the force who doesn’t particularly care for newbies. Their tales are graphic, humorous and extremely informative in the direction of Jeter, who implants himself into each individual flashback – every narration will assist him with the trauma he is about to experience.

You see, Jeter and his latest squeeze, Amy (Halston Sage), are brutally attacked and abducted after leaving a poker game one night and stuffed away in a makeshift dungeon that reeks of a Jigsaw stronghold. They’re mentally and physically tortured by a captor wearing a mask that would make him the perfect substitute for a Slipknot on-stage performance. His motives are unknown; however, he is very creative when it comes to extracting information and escapism (think Krazy Glue). The scenes of imprisonment are tense and driven to plausibility by Mirchoff’s work – the guy can play the brash, self-important badge, while conveying fear and consternation as the hapless victim on the flipside. What he needs to do is to apply all of what he’s soaked in by sitting at the big boys’ table during those smoky, booze-ridden card games, combine it with his fundamental instincts to save his lady, and unmask the person responsible for this heinous and unlawful series of acts.

Now that I think back, I really can’t pin one bad performance on anyone – each respective actor gives his all to bring an air of dissatisfaction when mentioning his job but remain the type that would be completely lost without it. Aside from a few slight instances that could be looked at as far-fetched, the film speeds along, even with lots of dialogue, and the interwoven separate stories blend together well to drive home a conclusion that could be seen as misleading. Poker Night wraps everything up in a nice, tight package and drops it off on the doorstep for the masses to enjoy. This one’s simply gotta be seen.
