If you’ve ever said, “I want to kick some ass, but I want to be a space janitor too,” Telltale Games has some good news for you. The developer just released the first glimpse at the next title in the Borderlands series, Tales from the Borderlands.

Tales from the Borderlands will revisit the Borderlands timeline after the events of Borderlands 2.

Players will tackle the game as super space janitor Rhys, teamed with his unlikely partner Fiona, who are brought together in a bullet-spewing quest to take back the cash they think is theirs.

Telltale has amassed an impressive lineup of actors that include video game heavyweight Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Infamous: Second Son, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) and Patrick Warburton (“Seinfeld,” “Family Guy”).

The game will be released episodically in a total of five parts, all of which will contain Borderland’s “trademark humor.” The series will debut with the episode Zero Sun.

Episodes can be purchased for $4.99 each, or the entire season pass will be available for $19.99.

Tales from the Borderlands will be available for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and compatible IOS and Android devices.

No release date has been announced, but Telltale Games promises Tales from the Borderlands will be available “soon.”

MTV’s Scream – Mask Controversy Addressed

With or without the usage of the Ghostface mask, MTV has officially ordered itself a TV series based on Wes Craven’s slasher franchise Scream. We told you a couple of weeks ago that the new MTV “Scream” television series won’t be using the mask designed by FunWorld’s RJ Torbert.

Today Entertainment Weekly got some clarification on just what they will be doing.

It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask,” says Mina Lefevre, MTV’s senior vice president and head of scripted development. “It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.

Lefevre—who insists not using Ghostface had nothing to do with rights issues—promises that the spirit of Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven’s films are intact. “Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares, and the killer,” she says. “We’re tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.

Still, that doesn’t rule out ever seeing the Ghostface mask. “It’s a little preliminary, obviously, because we haven’t even started our writers room, to say that we will never see that other mask or not,” she adds.

Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Bobby Campo (The Final Destination), Connor Weil (Sharknado), and Joel Gretsch (“Witches of East End,” “V,” “The 4400″) star. Jamie Travis directed the pilot.

Synopsis:
The series will center on a YouTube viral video gone wrong, which leads to adverse repercussions for teenager Aubrey Jensen (Taylor-Klaus) and will also serve as the catalyst for a murder, opening up a window to the town’s troubled past.

Universal Taking Horror Out of Universal Monster Movies

$

We’ve been talking about Universal’s decision to release new versions of some of its more prominent horror franchises and then release an Avengers-type film starring them all for a while now. Today during a roundtable discussion their direction for these films has been unveiled… and we’re not exactly happy about it either.

We’ve tried over the years to make monster movies — unsuccessfully, actually,” admits Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley. “So, we took a good, hard look at it, and we settled upon an idea, which is to take it out of the horror genre, put it more in the action-adventure genre and make it present day, bringing these incredibly rich and complex characters into present day and reimagine them and reintroduce them to a contemporary audience.

Make sense? Depends on how you look at it. Know what else makes sense? Taking these wonderful horror franchises and making good movies instead of abandoning their roots and heritage. Stop making silly decisions like trying to turn Van Helsing into a superhero or hiring Rick Baker to do Wolfman effects and then opting for a CGI transformation. Or how about giving directors who actually care about these movies a shot at making them?

Then again… what do I know?

Sigh.

Hammer of Dr. Valentine, The (Book)

The Hammer of Dr. ValentineWritten by John Llewellyn Probert

Published by Spectral Press

Two years ago, the eponymous villain of John Llewellyn Probert’s deliriously great The Nine Deaths of Dr. Valentine (review) unleashed a murderous swathe of Vincent Price-inspired mayhem targeting members of the medical profession.

Things have been quiet since then… but that isn’t to last. Now he’s back, and as imaginatively resourceful as ever, in the sequel novella The Hammer of Dr. Valentine.

Drawing the ire of the well-dressed, well-spoken, but utterly maniacal murderer on this occasion are a group of journalists guilty of spinning sensationalistic stories about his previous exploits and twisting his character in tabloid news rags. One by one, they’re picked off in increasingly elaborate fashion while the hapless police – soon joined by a weary and beleaguered DCI Longdon, who had hoped to never encounter a case, nor opponent, like this again – try desperately to get a step ahead of the killer’s plans.

Whereas Valentine previously themed his executions on various films starring Vincent Price, this time he’s widening the scope with an approach that chooses iconic moments from the veritable grab-bag of classic Hammer productions – and the result is a series of set pieces that are equal parts gruesome, imaginative, and lovingly ridiculous.

Take, for example, the opening sequence of the tale in which a fully grown man is catapulted from a cliff in Wales, only to plummet – his trajectory painstakingly calculated – into the valley below… where he is impaled between the shoulder blades by a cross stolen from atop a cathedral and planted, perfectly angled, at his final destination.

As previous, Probert seems to be having great fun letting his imagination run with his death sequences – and that sense of sheer enjoyment translates perfectly through his writing. It’s all utterly ridiculous, sure, but by gum you’ll believe that the nutty Dr. Valentine really has no qualms about going to the efforts that he does in order to pull off his homicidal traps.

A man with unlimited resources, and the ingenuity to use them, the villain is the centrepiece here. Every time he turns up in various guises to animatedly coerce his prey into making the last big mistake of their lives, you’ll be grinning ear to ear and letting out many a macabre chuckle at his theatrical nature and verbal foreshadowing. He’s a gentleman, a showman, a flamboyant eccentric – and absolutely, completely insane. In other words, he’s utterly fabulous. Hell, the last time we saw him, he was escaping the clutches of the law riding in a hot air balloon shaped like a giant raven. Come on!

The victims are a rather unlikeable bunch in comparison, with most of them lured to their deaths by the simple manipulation of their own overwhelming hubris and self-serving drive. Aided by his new female accomplice, Valentine really has very little trouble getting his targets just where he wants them. This would normally be an obvious negative, but that really isn’t the point here – the deaths are played more for devious, hand-rubbing glee than they are for palpable horror.

Counter-balancing it somewhat, though, is sympathetic film journalist John Spalding, who sits front and centre alongside the police as he assists in the investigation via his knowledge of Hammer’s output. It feels rather telling of Probert’s own opinion when all of those in Valentine’s crosshairs are unlikeable, self-absorbed media sycophants who, for all you learn of them, might as well deserve what they get – except for the film journo. Don’t fall into the tabloid trap, kids!

Just like he did with his previous book, Probert opens up something of a little game for Hammer fans in The Hammer of Dr. Valentine, letting you try to guess just which particular film is being referenced in each murder setup and each plot twist. If you’re an enthusiast of the legendary studio’s catalogue, you’ll have a wild time with seeing just how many you can pick out. All answers are given by the end, along with a couple of jibes towards some of Hammer’s lower quality produce, and Probert also includes a few pages at the end of the book where he gives his personal assessment of the films chosen to make an appearance here.

The Hammer of Dr. Valentine speaks with reverence for its inspiration on every page, even as it harnesses that to create something as far-fetched and gloriously over-the-top as it is. It works, and it works wonderfully. Some of the madness here makes it seem, as unlikely as it is, that Probert was somehow restraining himself with the previous novella – but here, he’s cut loose, kicking back and letting Valentine play with abandon inside his own playground of terrors.

Buy a ticket; take the ride. It’s one of the wildest and most satisfying that you’ll have had in a while – especially if you’re a Hammer fan.

Probert teases that we might just be seeing more of his mischievous mad genius in the future – albeit relocated to more… shall we say, ‘cultured’, climes – via a particularly great little nugget that will mean something to horror aficionados who pick up on it. At this point, the fact that the wait for it has now just begun feels like being caught in one of the mad doctor’s punishing schemes!

Encore, Mr. Probert! Encore!

American Cinematheque Presenting LA Premiere of That Guy Dick Miller on December 5th

Dick-Miller---After-DarkDick Miller is one of the last great American character actors. Every moviegoer knows his face, but few know his name, and even fewer know his story – an aspiring writer turned accidental actor. But thanks to Elijah Drenner’s documentary That Guy Dick Miller, that’s about to change.

Miller has worked with some of our best directors: Scorsese, Corman, Fuller, Dante, Cameron, Demme, and more. Whether sharing the screen with Nicholson, De Niro, Schwarzenegger, or The Ramones, Dick has been stealing scenes since his debut in 1955.

For the first time, Dick Miller has allowed filmmakers incredible access to his life and home for this funny and unexpected story. Joining him are the directors, producers, co-stars, and friends who have helped make him Hollywood’s leading “that guy”

The American Cinematheque at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood will present the Los Angeles premiere of That Guy Dick Miller on Friday, December 5th, kicking off a weekend of some of the beloved character actor’s greatest films. From the cantankerous neighbor Murray Futterman in Gremlins to his stand-out scene stealing moments in The Terminator, After Hours, and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Dick Miller’s incredible career story has never before been told until now.

After making a splash at the SXSW 2014 Film Festival, the documentary has been playing film festivals across the nation, but this is the first screening in Los Angeles. “There’s something immensely satisfying to see this film premiere at one of the Hollywood’s greatest institutions,” says director Elijah Drenner. “To see the spotlight turned on Dick after a 60-year career in show business is very gratifying. This is one of the reasons why we made the movie.”

Dick Miller Weekend Details:
THAT GUY DICK MILLER makes its Los Angeles premiere on Friday, December 5th, at 7:30 PM PT and will be followed by a Q&A with Drenner and Dick and Lainie Miller.

On Saturday, December 6th, a triple-feature of GREMLINS (in glorious 70mm!), GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, and DEMON KNIGHT will feature Q&A’s with Miller, Joe Dante, Ernest Dickerson, and other guests.

Concluding the weekend on Sunday, December 7th, will be a double-bill of A BUCKET OF BLOOD and WAR OF THE SATELLITES featuring a Q&A with director Roger Corman and Miller.

Tickets to these events can be purchased at Fandango.

The Egyptian Theater is located at 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028.

Not in or near LA?  Don’t worry; the film was picked up for North American distribution by Canada’s IndieCan Entertainment and is slated for a theatrical release in the winter of 2014/2015. Bill Jemas Talks Take-Two Interactive’s New Night of the Living Dead Inspired Comic Series

We all know Take-Two Interactive for its kick-ass video games, and most of us know Bill Jemas (the former vice president of Marvel Comics) as a comic genius. The two have recently joined forces for a comic series taking place in the Night of the Living Dead universe.

Take-Two Interactive is responsible for such beloved games as the Grand Theft Auto series, Manhunt, Midnight Club, and Bioshock. They have come together with Bill Jemas to create a new line set in an alternate reality based on Night of the Living Dead. Jemas recently talked with Dread Central to explain this new project .

Bill JemasWith titles like Rise, Soul, and Insurrection, the new series promises to be something readers have never seen before. Jemas discussed what readers can expect from Take-Two Interactive’s newest comic series, inspired by and set in the world of Night of the Living Dead.

“Take-Two Interactive believes that comic publishing is an efficient way to create new entertainment properties,” Jemas said. “They asked me to help them start up a new imprint, Double Take. We are commissioning a series of graphic novels. So far, our lead writers are Brian Clevenger (Atomic Robo) and Jeff McComsey (FUBAR). First you’ll see a lot of what you have already seen and expect to see. Then you will be surprised at what we reveal.”

Jemas discussed where the inspiration to use Night of the Living Dead as the background, or alternate reality, for the comic came from. “One of our original stories starred a character who was auditioning for a play,” Jemas said. “To make that story more realistic, we wanted the play to feel real – and thought about making it a revival of a classic story – like Wicked or The Wizard of Oz. Mike Coast, our story editor, pointed out that the Night of the Living Dead has become part of the public domain. We all love that film and all kinda panned off that other story to focus on NotLD. We knew they would be fun to write and hope they will turn out to be profitable.”

Double Take has quite a large scale project planned for this new comic and also plenty of other ideas should this one become a success. “We are starting with six graphic novels, and we’ll build from there,” Jemas said. He also added, “Double Take has dozens of stories in several genres in various stages of development. We’ll keep adding them to our story-verse over time.”

Scariest Motel in America Haunted by 100s of Clowns

Scared of clowns? Coulrophobia have its grip on you so tightly that you cannot even look at a pair of floppy shoes without a chill running down your spine? Well then! This one is for you! Get out your pads and pencils, kids. It’s time to write down the name of a place you should NEVER go!

Roadtrippers just did a story on The Clown Motel located in the small town of Tonopah, Nevada. Still not sure where that is? Well, we never heard of it either. Apparently it’s just off Highway 95, about halfway between Las Vegas and Reno.

The lobby of this hellish establishment is filled with hundreds of menacing clowns, and each and every room is clown-themed as well. Yep! We’re talking 110% pure nightmare fuel!

If that’s not enough to chill your funny bone… The Clown Motel shares a lot with a cemetery full of gold miners who died from a plague. Yeah, just try to go to sleep there! We friggin’ dare ya!

Reddit users who have visited have been detailing accounts of their experiences there. Here’s one!

At one point early in the evening we were hearing strange sounds and what appeared to be someone screaming followed by popping and crunching noises. While in the bathroom my buddy decided to have a peek outside of the bathroom window. My buddy lets out a yell and busts out into the room and I’m like “what?!” He doesn’t say anything but goes right to his bag and gets his Smith and Wesson 357 out. I’m thinking “what the fuck” and I dig into my bag to get my Sig 232 out. He says we need to get the fuck out of there right now. I saw he was serious and that made me serious about it, we grabbed our shit for the most part (left a few clothes behind) and looked out the peep sight to make sure it was clear to our car. I threw my gun into my pocket, he put his in his waistband and we hauled ass to the car and got the hell out of there. On the ride away, I asked what he saw in the bathroom. He told me when he looked out the window there was this creepy-ass clown facing away from the window, pants at his ankles, making a weird motion. He told me the clown slowly turned 90 degrees to look at him, my friend said he looked down to see this clown fucking a full-sized dinner ham, when he looked up from the ham fucking the clown was smiling and waving at him.
