The Shelter Wraps! New Stills!

John Fallon’s directorial debut, The Shelter, starring Michael Paré (The Lincoln Lawyer, Streets of Fire), Gayle James, Rachel Whittle, Lauren Thomas, Brigette Rose, and Amy Wickenheiser, just wrapped post-production over at Holbrook Multi Media in Lafayette, Louisiana, and writer/director Fallon had this to say about the process:

Post-production on The Shelter with Holbrook Multi Media was educational and creatively stimulating. Editor/colorist Bobby Holbrook and I came up with many visceral visual motifs for the film, and sitting down with sound designer Colby Huvall was rewarding as well. The Shelter is a film that needed a potent sound design, and I am happy to report that we have one and it meshes with the polished visuals beautifully. I am excited about the end result! Michael Paré is simply incredible in what I believe is one of the best performances of his career, the supporting cast lent him able support, and the haunting music by Shawn Knippelberg and Colby Huvall was the cherry on top! It is now time to swim in shark-infested waters and explore the world of sales/distribution!

Chief editor/colorist Bobby Holbrook added:

It made sense for us to be involved in both sides of the film process since this is a unique story and needed to be woven together in a particular way, with many scenes requiring a different look. I shot with a Canon C300 using Ziess CP2 prime lenses, capturing everything wonderfully – from beautiful, wide lake shots to cramped grimy alleyways, and the editing process consisted of fine-tuning the look and feel John wished to convey.”

Finally, here are producer Donny Broussard’s thoughts:

Working with the Holbrooks and John Fallon has been a pleasure, and the post process was seamless under John’s direction. I can’t wait for people to see what John cooked up in his twisted mind! I am proud to have helped bring this film to life”

John Fallon directed The Shelter from his own screenplay, Donny Broussard (Little Houses) and Fallon produced the picture, Erin Bennett was the production manager, Shawn Knippelberg and Colby Huvall scored the film, and Thomas Wilson (James Wan’s The Conjuring and Insidious: Chapter 2) handled the film’s VFX under his company NULL FX. The film was financed by Bruise Productions and JoBlo Movie Productions.

The Shelter will hit the festival circuit in 2015 and will be seeking worldwide distribution at the 2015 Berlin Film Market via Sales Agent DC-Medias. You can expect a new one-sheet, a full trailer, and an official site to surface early next year.

The Shelter The Shelter The Shelter

But soon enough, he realizes that the house won’t let him leave, as its doors are all locked while its windows cannot be opened or broken. Destiny has brought Thomas to this place. What does it want from him? Will he survive the ordeal?

Sundance 2015: New Still and More Info on Turbo Kid

Yesterday we learned that directors Anouk Whissell, François Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s Turbo Kid is heading to Sundance 2015 as part of the Park City at Midnight lineup, and today we have more details plus a new still.

From the Press Release:
EMAfilms, T&A Films, and Epic Pictures Group are pleased to announce that TURBO KID, a Canada-New Zealand co-production, will make its World Premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight section.  The Festival takes place January 22 to February 1 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah.

TURBO KID is a post-apocalyptic, BMX-powered, blood-splattered love story that follows the epic journey of an orphaned outcast reluctant to be a hero in the wasteland of an alternate future.

TURBO KID is written and directed by RKSS: Anouk Whissell, François Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell.   Cast members include Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf, Michael Ironside, Aaron Jeffery, and Edwin Wright.

“We always envisioned TURBO KID to be like some lost crazy kid’s movie from the 1980s that’s somehow has just been rediscovered,” said RKSS.  “We wanted a love story with the exploitation elements we grew up with, a post-apocalyptic scenario, over-the-top gore FX, super turbo explosions, and a few BMX tricks for good measure. We were going for a retro inspired aesthetic, not just from an overall visual presentation, but from how the narrative unfolds. We wanted TURBO KID to appeal to a whole new generation of warped kids (and crazy adults).”

RKSS, also known as Roadkill Superstar, has written and directed over twenty short films, many of which have won awards at various festivals abroad, including LE BAGMAN, T IS FOR TURBO, and DEMONITRON.  TURBO KID is their first film feature collaboration.

The film is produced by EMAfilms’ Anne-Marie Gélinas and Benoit Beaulieu and T&A Films’ Ant Timpson and Tim Riley and is executive produced by Jason Eisener (HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN), Epic Pictures Group’s Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson, Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt, and Curious Films’ Matt Noonan.

TURBO KID is financed by Telefilm Canada, New Zealand Film Commission, the Quebec Provincial Tax Credit Program, the Canadian Tax Credit Program, and Alchemy 24 and our collaborators Cinepool, Departement Camera, and Curious Films. Epic Pictures Group is representing worldwide sales rights outside of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

House of Bad (DVD)

House of BadStarring Heather L. Tyler, Sadie Katz, Cheryl Bonty

Directed by Jim Towns

House of Bad is the worst movie I have ever seen. I wanted to make some kind of joke like, “House of Bad certainly lives up to its name,” but the movie doesn’t warrant the effort it took to come up with that joke, which came so easily it didn’t even register as a thought in my brain.

This is not a bad movie that you can enjoy. This is not Troll 2 or B-movie schlock level enjoyably bad. This is a bad movie made badly. To quote a famous doctor, “Your movie is bad, and you should feel bad.

The plot is bad. Three sisters, Blossom, Bubbles, and Sluttercup, all decide that the best way to get out of their shitty lives is to steal a bunch of heroin and hide out in a house they lived in as kids. They assume that the drug dealer won’t find them there since of course the last place that anyone would look for them is in a house tying everyone together. The house is kind of haunted or something, things happen, and most of them die.

The narrative is bad. There is a history of violence in the family, but since the writer is a hack, he can’t figure out how three estranged sisters would possibly talk about it. So he makes the youngest sister part of the father’s “other” family. This way, the sister who grew up in a different household can ask questions about the mysterious terrible tragedy that happened. This writer seriously can’t figure out how to write scenes where three sisters sit around and talk about their father without one of them being introduced to the concept of her dad. If you couldn’t figure out that the big reveal is a murder/suicide and that the ghosts are the dead parents, then you fell asleep looking at the box art.

The characterization is bad. The brunette is a tough girl who hates men for treating her like she’s weak. The blonde is a prostitute who hates men for using her poor life choices to their advantage. She also serves as their in to the heroin trade, as she is sleeping with the guy they steal from. The reddish haired girl is the sweet and innocent heroin addict who just trusts too much for her own good and therefore gets into bad relationships. On face value, this sounds like the setup to a girl power movie, but the costumes are so provocative and nudity so profuse that this could easily be set in a women’s prison in the 80’s. You can either be a bad sexploitation film or a bad feminism flick. Please pick one.

The plot twists and turns are bad. The story is supposedly about the deterioration of trust between the main characters, opening them up to possession and an eventual murder party, but none of their actions make sense. At one point the blonde calls her drug dealer boyfriend to tell him they are okay and to say goodbye, not realizing that he’s probably more concerned about his suitcase full of heroin than his prostitute girlfriend. Oh no, who would have guessed the drug dealer was a bad guy? He traces the phone to their house and tries to kill them, only to be girl powered to death. They drag his body to the woods and just… leave him there. They don’t push him into the nearby river. They don’t chop him up into little bits and feed him to animals. They don’t even dig a hole. They just put his body on the ground a bit away from their house and call it a job well done. It doesn’t come up again until he is tripped over in the final chase scene, which is probably the first time a character has ever been reintroduced into a narrative as a surrogate log.

My favorite part of the movie has to be where they leave the heroin addict alone in a room full of heroin and expect her to just be cool. Seemingly the production couldn’t afford a believable way to fake a heroin injection so the actress just ends up going all cookie monster on the shit. The sisters walk in on her having scarfed down a comical amount of heroin, and she’s got heroin all over her face and clothes like a toddler with spaghetti. They act all surprised, and I don’t exactly blame them since this is the stupidest thing I certainly have ever seen.

The inevitable ghostings are bad. Instead of having them do creepy things like slamming doors or shattering pictures to make statements, the ghosts just stand there. No one can see them until the plot says so, but it’s fine since they are only 5% of the movie. They pop up at the beginning to look like someone accidentally double-exposed the film and come back later while the ladies are vulnerable to prey on their fears.

SPOILER ALERT

The daddy ghost possesses the strong sister who hates men because of daddy issues, and the mom ghost possesses the heroin addict because this movie is bad. The blonde goes to dump the heroin because of morals and plot, and then tough girl kills heroin girl and blonde girl kills tough girl. The end.

END SPOILER

I do not see how anyone could enjoy this movie. It is badly acted, badly written, badly costumed, badly toned with bad scares and bad plot points. I am used to watching bad movies. There’s kind of a running joke between me and my boss that I will take just about anything and give it a shot so I’m no stranger to one-star movies. I have watched made-for-Telemundo teenage horror flicks, Syfy throwaways, and independent films so cheap that I have to watch them on a private Vimeo because they couldn’t even afford to print screeners. I have watched Strawberry Estates. There’s a guy at the bar I frequent who loves shitty movies, and he is always excited to hear what new levels of shit I have to recommend him. This is a man that genuinely enjoyed 8213: Gacy House and The St. Francisville Experiment. Even he could not enjoy this film ironically.

This movie is not a House of Bad, it’s a Hotel on Boardwalk of Bad.

NSFW – The 13 Most Entertaining Video Nasties

$
0

For those who don’t know, the Video Nasties are a group of films that were banned in the UK several decades ago as they feature content that was considered too extreme for the market. If you were a filmmaker looking to make a name for yourself with the most sexual or violent film during the ’70s and ’80s, this was a list you hoped to rule.

Some films made the VN list incidentally; they simply could not avoid the brand. But to be honest, some were destined to be labeled, and that’s part of the reason the films were made to begin with. No one can claim I Spit on Your Grave wasn’t shot with the design of rustling jimmies. Well, jimmies it did indeed rustle, and the “Video Nasty” moniker was quickly attached.

The same can be said for many others, and if you happen to be on the hunt for the perverse or controversial, the Video Nasties are must-see flicks. The majority are mediocre affairs, but some are surprisingly enjoyable films while a few more hold cultural relevance, deserving of a look if for no other reason than historical insight. There’s certainly history to be found in the group, and we’re out to ensure that you engage in at least a single viewing of these 13, which are amongst the very best of the bunch.

Video Nasty

Tenebrae: Remember when Dario Argento was consistently pumping out top notch giallo films? You’ve got to head back to the late 1970s and early ’80s to experience that stretch of Argento’s career, but it’s a trek worth making. The man had an amazing knack for creating palpable tension (what the hell happened??) and gruesome murder sequences and stood as the king of giallo as a result. Tenebrae, while almost identical to a number of Argento’s other films (Deep Red in particular), is one of his career highlights, and though it found a home on the dreaded Video Nasties list, it’s a tame film by today’s standards. Do yourself a proper justice and track it down… and while you’re at it, include Suspira, the aforementioned Deep Red and Inferno as well. You won’t regret it.

Tenebrae

The Last House on the Left: Wes Craven left moviegoers in stunned silence in 1972 when he rolled out the highly controversial The Last House on the Left. The film is a gruesome, sadistic picture that has a very guerrilla vibe to it. Some of the things the performers were asked to do for the shoot border on nauseating (including a scene in which one victim is forced to urinate in her pants), and the gritty cinematic style only enhances the vile moments. The look of the movie clearly sets it apart from the norm. Far apart. More than 40 years after release, The Last House on the Left will still spark disgust and sympathy in equal measure.

I can sit back and harp on how all of us boys (young and old) love to soak up the sights of the female body. But that’s pointless. Everyone, man and woman alike, knows guys think with the wrong head on a near constant basis. So you’ll be spared a lengthy introduction in favor of a quick segue into a list that may surprise you.

Bared it All

Betsy RueMy Bloody Valentine: My Bloody Valentine was a shocker. To the delight of hardcores like myself, the remake proved to be highly entertaining, boasting a number of scenes that truly pop and some awesome atmosphere. One of those scenes happens to be a genuinely interesting nude scene featuring the well endowed and on-the-rise Betsy Rue (I know Betsy isn’t a certified A-lister yet, but she damn well could be soon, as she’s headed in the right direction and already sports some impressive credits), who runs from a motel room in the buff, only to walk directly into harm’s way. Things don’t end well for Betsy, but she can walk away from the filming experience knowing she’s one of the sexiest women to ever shoot an unbelievably awkward nude scene.

Scarlett Johansson – Under the Skin: The last thing most of us expected from ScarJo was participation in a full frontal nude scene. But we got it earlier this year when the artsy but awesome Under the Skin invaded our homes. It’s a slow-paced flick, and it won’t work for every fan out there, but if you like slow burn psychological trips with jolting finales, you’ll cherish every minute. Especially the moments that feature Scarlett standing in a front of a mirror, not a shred of clothing on her. Uh, to die for!

New Until Dawn Trailer Brings the Scares

$

The Sony PlayStation 4 is quickly becoming the console of choice for horror fans with a blood-drenched lineup for 2015 that just cannot be ignored. Right now we have a new look at one of the system’s most compelling games, the slasher Until Dawn.

Until Dawn will feature thousands of storyline branches and hundreds of endings. The game accomplishes this through the use of what Supermassive calls “the butterfly effect.” When a choice must be made, such as whether or not to pick up a book, a small butterfly icon will appear, indicating this choice will have consequences later in the game. The path you choose will lead you to one of Until Dawn’s hundreds of endings.

The choices that shape the game’s path can be something as simple as which door you open to something as pressing as whether or not to put a bullet in your friend’s brain. Sony pointed out at its press conference that every character can die in the game, and if they die, they stay dead and the game moves on. Until Dawn will alter its story based on character deaths, having unique endings based on the number of characters still alive.

Until Dawn was first announced two years ago at Gamescom for the now defunct PlayStation Move. Supermassive has since re-tooled the game with top tier Hollywood writers and actors, including Scream 4 actress Hayden Panettiere.

No release date has been attached to Until Dawn, but it has already appeared in the PlayStation Store pre-order section. However, at the time of writing this article, the content is not selectable. Until Dawn will appear exclusively on the PS4.

Another Look at The Order: 1886

We’re still waiting for the release of The Order: 1886 on the PlayStation 4, but thankfully the powers that be have released a new gameplay trailer to tide us over. Hang in there, fiends. It’s coming!

Discover history’s darkest secret in The Order: 1886, the game that re-writes history by introducing a unique vision of Victorian-Era London, where Man uses advanced technology to battle a powerful and ancient foe. In an alternate history where myths and technology co-exist, players take on the role of Sir Galahad, a hardened member of an elite order of Knights engaging in a centuries-old war that will determine the course of history forever.

Hundreds of years before the game’s version of 1886, humanity de-evolves and a subset of humans becomes the genetically different “Half-breeds.” War eventually breaks out between humans and Half-breeds for power and survival, and in order to combat these fierce enemies, a brotherhood was formed through the Knights of the Round Table – an alliance called The Order. The Knights of The Order have waged wars across centuries and sworn to defend humanity while protecting the secrets of this dark history. Strengthened by a mysterious liquid called Blackwater, the Knights of The Order are able to heal their wounds and extend their lifespans in order to engage this supernatural foe.

Through the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, The Order is now equipped with powerful weapons to turn the tide against the Half-breeds, but must also face a new threat. In the market for gallons of gore with your video game fix? Then you’ll wanna make sure that your digital elevator stops at Killing Floor 2 when it hits PlayStation 4.

In Killing Floor 2, players descend into continental Europe, where the outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has quickly spread and gained unstoppable momentum. Just one month after the events in the original Killing Floor, the specimen clones are everywhere and civilization is in disarray. A group of civilians and mercenaries have banded together to combat the outbreak and established privately funded operation bases across Europe. Upon tracking specimen clone outbreaks, players will descend into zed-laden hot zones and exterminate the dangerous creatures rampantly destroying mankind.

Delivering an even more visceral and viscera-spewing shooter experience than the original, Killing Floor 2 ramps up the gore with a proprietary, high powered persistent blood system bringing new levels of fidelity to the genre. Players will send entrails, severed limbs, and blood flying as they wade through hordes of enemies. But they need to watch out! If caught, enemies will rip them, and their entire party, limb from limb.

New enemies and fan favorites from the original game are back with expanded and smarter artificial intelligence, dishing out powerful attacks, working as a group to weaken the player’s party and pushing the challenge level and fear factor to new levels.

Look for the game sometime in 2015.

The only constant is that each story is played from a first-person perspective and each ends with that family member’s death. You’ll follow Edith Finch as she explores the history of her family and tries to figure out why she’s the last Finch left alive.

The official French teaser trailer (surprisingly in English) has arrived for the highly acclaimed terror tale It Follows (review), and just because it’s the weekend doesn’t mean that we’re not right here making sure you get the news as it breaks!

With a riveting central performance from Maika Monroe and a strikingly ominous electronic score by Disasterpeace, It Follows is an artful psychosexual thriller from David Robert Mitchell (whose The Myth of the American Sleepover premiered at Critics’ Week in 2010).

The film also stars Keir Gilchrist (“The United States of Tara”), Daniel Zovatto (Laggies), Jake Weary (“Chicago Fire”), Olivia Luccardi (“Orange Is the New Black”), and Lili Sepe (Spork). David Robert Mitchell directs.

Synopsis:
For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe, AT ANY PRICE), the fall should be about school, boys, and weekends at the lake. Yet, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.
