Pyramid, The (2014)

The PyramidStarring Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O’Hare

Directed by Grégory Levasseur

With the barrage of clips and teasers Twentieth Century Fox released over the past few weeks for The Pyramid, we were starting to feel like we’d already seen the whole movie; but if you were avoiding them all until you were able to check it out for yourself, it’s a good bet you weren’t able to see any of it this weekend since “limited” doesn’t even begin to describe the flick’s release. Which is why I’m writing this review instead of Foy, who originally claimed it; unfortunately (for me) The Pyramid didn’t open anywhere near him (lucky fucker).

So, what is Fox hiding? A pretty ho-hum affair that probably should have just hit VOD and DTV and gone about its merry way before the better horror offerings the powers-that-be have waiting in the wings for 2015 arrive.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. What’s wrong with – and maybe a little right about – The Pyramid, and what’s it even about anyway?

As the film opens, it’s 2012 and Cairo, Egypt, is in the throes of revolution while 250 miles away Holden and Nora, a father-daughter archaeological team (O’Hare and Hinshaw), are about to open a previously unknown pyramid buried deep in the sand. She used a satellite to uncover their find, a controversial method the more conservative archaeologists, her dad included, aren’t fully on board with.

Plus, it’s no ordinary pyramid; it’s three-sided instead of four with unusual markings. Cue spooky shenanigans like a member of the work crew foaming at the mouth and acting zombie-esque after inhaling the structure’s toxic air. Misdirection or possibly a portent of things to come? We won’t say more except that aliens were also alluded to, as were the Freemasons(!), so we had a smorgasbord of possibilities ahead.

Of course the dig is being filmed by a documentary team (Buckley as annoying cameraman Fitzie and Christa Nicola as annoying interviewer Sunni), and the fifth member of our group is Zahir (Amir K), with whom Hinshaw’s character is having a romance.

To address the elephant in the room, yes, The Pyramid IS found footage… sort of… mostly. Probably 80% of it is with the rest being random overhead shots once everyone enters the tomb of doom plus a few peeks at things we couldn’t see otherwise – like Shorty, the pretty cool camera strapped to a cave-rover Zahir “borrowed” from NASA.

After all the players have been introduced, it takes awhile for things to get cooking. The middle section especially has some eye-rollingly bad dialogue, and aside from O’Hare, who’s only marginally interesting as the assholish Holden, the leads would have benefited a lot from a few additional takes of their scenes. Alas, obviously the budget didn’t allow for that, but it did provide some pretty effective F/X work (similar to the found footage ratio, the effects are around 80% CGI to 20% practical).

SPOILER ALERT (although if you watched the aforementioned barrage of sneak peeks, you already know this):

There are creatures in The Pyramid, one in particular we don’t see represented all that often with ties to the Egyptian god Osiris and the Book of the Dead. He’s clearly visible and menacing. But it’s too little too late. There are a couple of inventive deaths along the way – at one point Creepy and I both jumped and grabbed each other’s hand laughing, and at another he turned to me and said, “That just raised this from a 2-1/2 to a 3,” to which I replied, “No, all it did was keep it from being a 2,” – but as you’ll see below, I spoke too soon, and Levasseur’s directorial debut joins the dozens of other just barely mediocre films released this year. Although I will say that the ending does mostly satisfy, a nice surprise.

While The Pyramid uses its claustrophobic setting better than As Above/So Below does (c’mon, you knew comparisons were inevitable), it simply doesn’t have the star power to keep an audience’s interest. What it has instead is “not” star power. Like the whole time I kept thinking of Hinshaw as “Not Emilie de Ravin,” Nicola as “Not Stockard Channing” or rather “Not Rizzo,” and Buckley as “Not Jeremy Scahill.” And yes, I know Scahill’s not an actor – or British – but those musings were keeping me more entertained than the events taking place up on the screen.

Toward the end a character is asked how he’s doing, and his response is that he wants to get the hell out of there, which is exactly how I felt at that point. The couple three rows in front of us must have agreed because with just ten minutes to go, they walked out. So listen to me or learn from them, and save your money for holiday shopping. If you do journey into the depths of The Pyramid, don’t blame us if you leave feeling Egypped.

Dean Devlin Talks Single Independence Day Sequel

0
0

Back when the sequel to Independence Day was first talked about, filmmakers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich mentioned making two sequels instead of only one. Last week Fox greenlit just a single film, and today Devlin explains why.

We decided just to do one first to make sure that people like where we’re going,” Devlin tells the Nerd Report. “If that works well, there’s an ability to do some world building which would be really fun and interesting to do. I think Roland and everybody felt, let’s just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said, you know what, let’s scale it down. Let’s first make sure that it works for everyone. Roland is back to direct. He developed a new script with a couple young writers, and the new script is fantastic. We’re very excited about shooting.

Look for the film on June 24, 2016.

Mrs. Voorhees Confirmed for New Friday the 13th Movie

One of the bummers about 2009’s Friday the 13th remake was that Mrs. Voorhees was barely in it, seen only in a brief sequence that recreated the final moments of the original film. It sounds like Platinum Dunes is looking to make up for that, as Brad Fuller has revealed some more exciting details about Jason’s return. Read on!

Just a few days after we learned that the next Friday the 13th will be an entirely new film, rather than a remake or sequel, Fuller once again spoke with Brazilian website Omelete, his comments this time around indicating that Mrs. Voorhees will play an integral role in the proceedings.

Sex, drugs, beautiful people dying – these things do not change. And we can develop a more problematic relationship with the mother,” Fuller said, suggesting that the proposed 1980s setting will allow for them to delve further into that relationship than perhaps ever before. Yes, please.

Related Story: Rare Photos Reveal Friday the 13th Part 3’s Original Ending!

Though surely no surprise to anyone, Fuller also confirmed that Friday the 13th will continue to be an R-rated franchise, as he explained that “there is no PG-13 in the world of Jason Voorhees.” Well, thank God for that!

As far as we know, David Bruckner (The Signal, V/H/S) will be in the director’s chair, but Fuller didn’t comment on that. He also made no mention of the planned November 13, 2015, release date, though it’s likely that the film won’t be ready by then.

The Addams Family’s Ken Weatherwax Passes Away

The world of horror on television has lost a beloved staple of the genre as news has come that Ken Weatherwax, who played Pugsley Addams on 1964-66’s “The Addams Family,” has passed on at age 59 following a heart attack.

The news came from Weatherwax’s niece Shanyn Vieira via Facebook and was later confirmed by TMZ, who report that there will be two funerals for Weatherwax: one for family and the other for fans. Over the years Ken went on to voice Pugsley in the animated “The Addams Family” cartoon in 1973 and then reprised the role as Pugsley Sr. in the TV-movie “Halloween with the New Addams Family.” He also worked on the other side of the camera as a grip on the sets of several Hollywood productions.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincere condolences to Ken’s family, friends, and constituents. Thanks for all of the laughs, good sir. Your legacy is firmly cemented.

Ryan M. Andrews Talks Sick: Survive the Night

0
0

Ryan M. Andrews’ well received horror flick Sick: Survive the Night, fixing on the survivors of a zombie infection trying to rebuild civilization, hits DVD and VOD January 6th from Midnight Releasing. We spoke to Andrews about all the important stuff – corn syrup, George A. Romero, and movie make-up.

Important stuff first; how many gallons of corn syrup were used in the making of the movie?

RMA: I’m Canadian, we use litres. I wouldn’t even know how to convert it so let’s just say we used a fuck-load.

In all seriousness, do they even use that stuff still for blood? I think every makeup artist has their own, mastered concoction for blood. Some still use that stuff. Hell, I’ve seen some crazy mixes that people have put together. In Sick we actually had two different kinds of blood on set. Blood for the living and blood for the zombies. The zombie blood was thicker and darker.

How is a good “zombie face” perfected? Lots of white make-up and drawn-on veins?

RMA: I think that perfection comes down to the actor committing fully and completely to the part and how they use whatever look they have to sell it. Makeup wise, you can do a green face comic book look or you can do full out decaying corpse or anything in between. Good makeup is good makeup, but it comes down to how the actor portrays it The makeup/look complements how the actor performs.

Did you try to create your own distinctive “infected” person for the movie, rather than just copying other films? How do your walking dead differ?

RMA: I could talk for hours about this question because yes, we created our own specific zombies for this film. When NOTLD came out, it blew people away because they weren’t used to zombies being these scary cannibals. Then, when 28 Days Later came out, I think it really blew people away because its “zombies” were something new and different. So it was important to me to make sure our zombies were unique to our world.

It’s pop culture that “zombies eat brains.” Everyone knows this, though the only film to actually have zombies eating brains is Return of the Living Dead. So we decided to go that route. Our zombies eat brains. But instead of following in the footsteps of the ROTLD, we went a dead serious route. We based everything about our zombies on science, and we actually give specific scientific reasons as to why zombies eat brains.

Other than the science-heavy aspect to our zombies, our zombies actually both move slow and run. Our zombies move in two different stages. There is a rest and digest kind of mode for our zombies, where they move mindlessly and slow, but as soon as they catch wind of their prey, they turn to attack mode.

I worked very closely with makeup artist Melis Stevens to create the look of the zombies. We went through different inspirations and went through all the science together.

What was the appeal of doing the film initially?

RMA: My co-writer on the film, Chris Cull, originally suggested to me a zombie film with no zombies that would be a short film. When I started outlining the story with him, eventually I said, ‘This isn’t going to be a short. We’re like 40 pages in and far from the end.’ Though the focus of the story is on the survivors, I felt we still needed to see the zombies more. Not too much, I didn’t want to flood the film with pointless hordes of zombies, but since we spent so much time developing the science of what makes our zombies so different, I wanted to make sure we still saw them enough.

Have you always been a fan of zombies and horror? Whose work do you love?

RMA: I am a die-hard, lifelong horror fan. I love all things horror. Every style. I grew up on Tobe Hooper and John Carpenter so I have a soft spot for everything they have done, but I also love more artful horror like Jacob’s Ladder, the work of David Cronenberg, and the work of David Lynch. As far as zombies go, my favorite is George Romero’s Day of the Dead. I love the Dr. Frankenstein character, the Bub character, and Savini’s makeup is amazing.

Have you shown Sick at festivals? How did it go down?

RMA: Sick spent all of last year playing select festivals. And like any film in any festival, we have sold out screenings and we have screenings where only a handful of people made it out. But I don’t care whether 3 people are there or 300 people are there. I just like being able to get out there and show my art. A lot of people got what we were going for with a very stylized look and color palette, and we won some great awards including Audience Choice awards and Best Director and Best Zombie Film, etc. But you can’t please everyone so I know there are some that didn’t care for it. And that’s cool. It’s like that famous quote, ‘I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.’

Midnight Releasing is releasing Sick: Survive the Night on January 6, 2015, on DVD and VOD.

In the tradition of The Walking Dead, Sick: Survive the Night tells the story of a group of people who band together after a zombie outbreak. Debbie Rochon, Christina Aceto, Richard Roy Sutton, Jennifer Polansky, and Robert Nolan star in a Ryan M. Andrews film.

Synopsis:
Two years into the outbreak, the remaining people struggle day to day for survival. With the infected more active at night, three people seek shelter in an empty home, but with supplies scarce, they’ll be lucky to make it out alive.

Did Kevin from Home Alone Grow Up to Be Saw’s Jigsaw? The Startling Facts!

You know… every now and again a reason to love the Internet comes along that we have to share. Case in point: the following comparison that examines whether or not Kevin from the Home Alone franchise grew up to be Jigsaw from the Saw franchise! You have GOT to read this story from Grantland!

It’s notable, I think, that most of Kevin’s home-defense devices are triggered by the victim, just as Jigsaw’s traps are,” says the site. “In Saw II, Jigsaw used an electrified staircase with blades that slashed at the legs of the SWAT team officers trying to apprehend him. An embryonic version of this trap appears in Home Alone, when Kevin coats the basement stairs with tar and nails, causing Marv to impale his foot.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, kids! Click on the above link and get ready to discover the “startling truth” Well played, guys! Well played!

Zombies-in-Space Graphic Novel Containment Gets a Re-release

0

Eric Red is best known as a screenwriter and director whose films include The Hitcher, Near Dark, Bad Moon, and 100 Feet, but he’s also written several novels, short stories, and comics.  One of his best, the graphic novel Containment, originally published by IDW Publishing back in 2005, is back!

For the first time ever Red’s classic zombies-in-space tale (which has been long out of print) is available in hardcover and digital formats from SST. The incredible artwork is by Nick Stakal, and the introduction is by the legendary Wes Craven, who says of Containment, “It has blood, mayhem, sex, cat-and-mouse terror, and some of the best visual storytelling in years. Eric Red takes no prisoners. Read it with the lights on. Read it with a friend so you are not alone afterwards. Won’t matter. You still won’t be able to sleep afterwards. What better way to spend your remaining moments?”

SST Publisher Paul Fry says: “I’m extremely excited to be re-releasing Eric Red’s incredible zombie graphic novel Containment. I’m a huge fan of sci-fi horror, and Eric Red and Nick Stakal capture the sheer dread of being trapped in space and being hunted down by zombies perfectly. Eric Red, with his totally engaging and captivating storyline, and Nick Stakal’s extremely dark and terrifying artwork [make] a perfect combination. Add to that an introduction from movie legend Wes Craven, and you can’t go wrong! I know if people missed this book the first time, they’re going to love this new enhanced edition and be proud to have it sitting on their shelves.”

Synopsis:
On a manned NASA spaceship millions of miles from Earth, a terrifying malfunction occurs in the cryogenic hypersleep pods containing the hibernating astronauts, turning most of the crew into the violently brain-dead. A handful of outnumbered astronauts awaken intact from their artificial slumber to find themselves pitted against murderous zombies running amok on the ship.

Ryan Spindell Is a Bundle of Nerves

Produced as part of Guillermo del Toro’s House of Horrors project and in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and BlackBox TV, Bundle of Nerves is a horror comedy short that celebrates friendship, family, and slime-sucking tentacles hell-bent on destroying the human race.

If that sounds as much up your alley as it ours, check it out right here, right now!

From the Press Release:
Unwrap a “Bundle of Nerves” this holiday season.

Written and directed by Ryan Spindell (Kirksdale, We Come in Pieces), BUNDLE OF NERVES is the newest short film from Trapdoor Pictures.

Produced as part of Guillermo del Toro’s “House of Horrors” project and in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and BlackBox TV, BUNDLE OF NERVES is a short horror-comedy that pays homage to the classic pulp movies of yesteryear, but with a comedic, Judd Apatow-inspired twist.

“When the fine folks at Legendary Pictures asked me to make a short for Guillermo del Toro, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. He’s been a personal hero of mine for as long as I can remember. We were given one week to write and assemble our team and one day to shoot the film on these amazing Gothic mansion sets at the Youtube Space LA. I’ve never had to put together a project so quickly, and it was one of the most intense and creatively fulfilling experiences of my career.”–Ryan Spindell

“The Originals” aired its fall finale this week, and it set things up nicely for the remainder of the show’s second season. But what are fans to do in the meantime? For one thing we can look forward to an upcoming series of three prequel books written by none other than executive producer Julie Plec!

From the Press Release:
“The Originals,” a sexier, more mature hit spin-off television show of “The Vampire Diaries,” has three upcoming novels featuring The Original vampire family. This is the first time that “The Originals” is being featured in book format with new, never before seen content.

The titles are historical fiction that begin in the year 1722 in the city of New Orleans, all written by series co-creator Julie Plec, with covers that feature images of the television cast members.

Book #1, THE RISE, is set to release January 27, 2015, with subsequent titles coming out March 31 (Book #2, THE LOSS) and then May 26 (Book #3, THE RESURRECTION) from Harlequin’s HQN Books.

You’ll find EvilShop pre-order links for all three books below, but if you click here to visit Alloy Entertainment, you can also receive an exclusive cast poster with your order of The Originals: The Rise.

THE RISE Synopsis:
Family is power. The Original vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together always and forever. But even when you’re immortal, promises are hard to keep.

Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah Mikaelson believe they’ve escaped their dangerous past. But the city is lawless, a haven for witches and werewolves unwilling to share territory. The siblings are at their mercy… especially after Klaus meets the beautiful and mysterious Vivianne. Her impending marriage is key to ending the war between the supernatural factions—and Klaus’ attraction to her could destroy the uneasy alliance.

As Elijah works toward securing a piece of the city for his family and Rebekah fights her unexpected feelings for a French captain, will Klaus’ volatile desires bring their world crashing down—and tear them apart for good?

Zombie Kangaroos Have Become Waterborne

Zombie kangaroos? Really… did we just get a press release about zombie fucking kangaroos? You see? Every day is like a fortune cookie! Today we’ve been blessed.

We normally don’t do stories on when films get awards… but anything featuring the aforementioned hopping dead is worthy of our attention, if only to show you the artwork!

From the Press Release:
Australian zombie kangaroo short ‘Waterborne’ has been awarded Best Australian Short at the Monster Films’ ‘Monster Fest’ in Melbourne.

While Monster Fest was Waterborne’s first home-town screening, the short has received rave reviews and enthusiastic audiences at numerous international genre festivals including Fantasia International Film Festival (Montreal), Fantastic Fest (Austin), and Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. The film has also recently won several international awards including Best Short at the Abertoir Horror Festival in Wales, Best Microshort Zombie Film at Fear Fete in Missouri, and Best International Horror Short at Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Fest.

“It has been amazing to see the reaction of international audiences to the film over the last few months,” said director Ryan Coonan, “but it was an even greater honour to be recognised with this award in our home town”.

The film, which features a ‘zombie kangaroo’ that attacks a ranger on a deserted bush road, was produced by Melbourne producer Marisa Brown and was written by Ryan Coonan and Richard Barcaricchio. It had its world premiere at Fantasia Fest in Montreal in July and has since screened at over 40 festivals internationally.

Whilst Waterborne is a stand-alone short, it is being used as a proof-of-concept for a feature length film and has already attracted international production interest.

Ryan Coonan directs. Martin Blum and Don Bridges star. Here’s the pitch video below. The project obviously has been funded.

Synopsis:
Years of drought, flood, and fluctuating environmental conditions have taken their toll on a small country town. When a local ranger finds an unidentified algae multiplying in the water supply, he knows that something’s not right – but it’s not til the sun goes town that he realises the true extent of the danger.
