Coyote, starring Bill Oberst, Jr., was one of the most celebrated indie horror films of 2013, but it’s never gotten a proper DVD release. Finally, thanks to Wild Eye Releasing, that changes this month.

From the Press Release:
Wild Eye Releasing has announced the December 16th DVD release of Coyote. Hailed as “wickedly brilliant” (A Bucket of Corn), “an amazingly bold first time feature” (Film Bizarro), and “a visceral assault on the senses” (HorrorMovies.Ca), Coyote has been a hit on the festival circuit, taking home awards for Best Feature as well as Best Actor for star Bill Oberst, Jr.

The film, written and directed by Trevor Juenger, co-stars Victoria Mullen, Heather Schlitt, Joe Hammerstone, and Bill Finkbiner.

The DVD release of Coyote will be available nationwide at an SRP $14.95 and will exclusively include three feature length commentaries – one with Oberst, one with Juenger, and one with cinematographer Nick Brian Walters – as well as the short film Trash Man.

Synopsis:
An aspiring writer with insomnia descends into a world of madness and serial killing violence as he is torn between what is real and what has crawled from the darkest recesses of his mind, making him a threat to everyone around him… and most of all himself. A nightmarish, psychological horror that blends Taxi Driver with Videodrome, Coyote features a career-making performance from horror favorite Bill Oberst, Jr.

Horror Helps Out History and Filmmaker’s Journey Leads to Academy Award and Grammy-Winning Team

The horror industry is one of the single most giving businesses in all of the world. Any chance people within the genre get to give back to the world is readily and happily taken. Here’s a wonderful case in point…

From the Press Release:
For fans of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, there’s a wonderful opportunity to take home a piece of Elm Street memorabilia and help out a worthwhile project at the same time! Three Freddy Krueger display heads, signed by David Miller (designer and creator of the original Freddy Krueger make-up from the 1984 A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), and two Freddy Gloves, signed by Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger himself) and built by Anders Eriksen (from Nightmare Gloves), are being raffled off as part of a new fundraiser. A $20 tax-deductible donation enters contributors into a drawing for these first-rate Elm Street items.

On Veterans Day, an ongoing Indiegogo campaign was launched to raise a portion of the funds for the production of a WWII documentary, JOURNEY TO ROYAL, and includes other notable perks from Doug Drexler (signed Star Trek business cards) and Matt Gonzalez (Ralph Nader’s 2008 Vice Presidential running mate and current San Francisco Chief Public Defender, who contributed an original piece of framed art). Director Christopher Johnson’s producing/directing gears have switched from the fiery tones of his A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET CONCEPT TEASER (see below), which he created for his then agent to garner an opportunity to reboot the series, envisioning a Freddy Krueger on fire with glowing hot blades. But thanks to the generosity of a few key Elm Street veterans, JOURNEY TO ROYAL is not without the influence of Freddy Krueger.

In addition, The Misty Falls Motion Picture Company is pleased to announce the addition of Oscar®-winning visual effects artist Doug Drexler (Dick Tracy, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine, Battlestar Galactica, Defiance) and Grammy-winning songwriter and arranger Les Reed OBE (It’s Not Unusual, Delilah) to its production team for the JOURNEY TO ROYAL. Drexler will serve as Visual Effects Supervisor, while Reed will compose original songs for the soundtrack.

Johnson’s film tells the story of Lt. Royal A Stratton, a 22-year-old rescue pilot who died in the South Pacific while heroically saving the lives of nine of his fellow airmen.

Already completed is the filming of the presentation of Congressional Commendations for Stratton by Representatives Marcy Kaptur, John Conyers, James Jordan, and Jim McGovern and former Representatives Nick Rahall, Rob Anders, and Dennis Kucinich. Also completed are interviews with stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, such as Marsha Hunt and Janis Paige, who tell of a country bound together by purpose and of the entertainers who stepped up to boost morale as war efforts exploded. In his pursuit of additional veterans interviews, Johnson states, “Good fortune has facilitated finding and visiting these remarkable WWII vets. I’m constantly aware of the fragile timeframe within which I’m working.”

Interviews from members of the 4th Emergency Rescue Squadron, with which Stratton flew, include first-hand accounts of the rescue of the U.S.S. Indianapolis survivors (a story made famous in the blockbuster JAWS), the delivery of the surrender documents to be signed by the Emperor of Japan on the U.S.S. Midway, the escorting of the Enola Gay, and an eyewitness account of Hiroshima.

JOURNEY TO ROYAL is being produced through Johnson’s production company, The Misty Falls Motion Picture Company, with Mariana Tosca and Glenn Rossney co-producing, and is sponsored by Moving Train, Inc., which makes contributions tax deductible to the full extent permitted by law.

David Concannon (of Explorer Consulting, LLC), the last person to dive on the Titanic, has signed on to head the expedition to locate and film Stratton’s scuttled PBY, though Johnson has yet to source the $1.2 million required for the undertaking. Johnson says, “The main goal of this documentary is to preserve the history, legacy, and stories of these members of the Greatest Generation. There are components to this documentary that are massive in scale and warrant exploration, such as the filming of Royal’s PBY at the bottom of the Pacific. We know where she is, roughly, and someone like James Cameron would have no problem accomplishing this, but he has access to those kinds of resources. The challenge for me as a filmmaker and producer is aligning the production with people inspired by and willing to back such an endeavor.”

“I was recently speaking with a colleague, Joe Rohde (documentary filmmaker and theme park designer), and we were discussing our current projects. He just finished a beautiful and important documentary (THE LEOPARD IN THE LAND) and mentioned that his father, Martin (Rick) Rohde, was a WWII photographer in the South Pacific and offered me the use of his vintage photographs for the documentary. These are the serendipitous moments that you hope for.”

We live in an A.D.D. world so why shouldn’t we be able to get in some quickie horror tales whenever we can?!? That’s the exact premise behind the web series #1minutenightmare. Check out the details and a few of the films right here.

From the Press Release:
“Give them pleasure – the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare…” – Alfred Hitchcock

SuperfreakMedia’s award-winning new web series is set to begin its second wave of terror with titles confirmed through to March. Gaining awards and popularity both locally and internationally, the #1minutenightmare web series is injecting a minute of terror into your everyday wherever you are.

Whether you’re at work, on the go, or simply looking for something to watch at home, the collection of snappy shorts released so far offers a new slice of horror each month.

Starting big with Night Light, SuperfreakMedia made you scared to look under the bed or turn off the light. Tackling the occult, Burning Man brought a sinister take to the traditional Bonfire Night celebrations in the UK each November. Wrapping up the year with a shocking body horror, the latest release, Get Wet, is still making waves, proving Christmas is certainly the deadliest time of the year.

Series creator Liam Banks has been a fan of the horror genre since he can remember. “The likes of Creepshow, Tales from the Darkside, and even the Goosebumps books kept me entertained with short horror stories from an early age. #1minutenightmares are a way to recapture that silly childlike sense of fear all us horror fans have experienced growing up. What scared us were ‘moments’ from these classic films and books, and the #1minutenightmare series hopes to pack each second with a scare and leave you haunted month to month. Ultimately we are creating an anthology that spans a year to form a film comprised of 12 micro stories. The response has been fantastic so far, and the continued support and new viewers we are gaining are keeping us motivated to keep on scaring!”

With the first three shorts in the year-long series being available to watch online, popularity is growing amongst horror fans. Want to See Something Cool? is the next title set to be released on January 1st as a 2-minute New Year Special. So to support the online world of horror, have your eyes firmly fixed on SuperfreakMedia this New Year’s Day at 7pm and join in by kicking off the New Year with a scare!

Horror History: Charles Bronson vs. The Golem – The Greatest Cannon Films Production Never Produced

$

The history of cinema is littered with potentially astounding motion pictures that didn’t get made for one reason or another. One such project that never came about would have pit perennial movie tough guy Charles Bronson against a monster Golem brought to life to dispense the very sort of vigilante justice Bronson’s name had become synonymous with.

For those unfamiliar with the Golem, Jewish legends tell of being able to bring to life an anthromorphic being, typically made of stone or clay, to do the bidding of its animator. The Golem has been the subject of countless stories and motion pictures, but none before had featured a pistol-packing Charles Bronson as an anti-vigilante monster hunter.

According to the book Bronson’s Loose: The Making of the Death Wish Films, Cannon Films – the company that 1980’s action fans recognize as the purveyors of all things Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson, and most movies of that era with the word “ninja” in the title – paid a hefty price for an action-horror screenplay by Michael Alan Canter entitled The Golem that would have put a (then) modern spin on that monster of classic Jewish folklore.

Cannon got Bronson to agree to star, announced the film with a big ad in Variety, and hired veteran special effects artist Jim Danforth, whose work can be seen in 1962’s Jack the Giant Killer and 1982’s Conan the Barbarian, to bring the titular mud monster to life.

The film’s plot would have centered on a rabbi from the old country now living in New York City who brought with him a Golem he’s kept stored away in his attic for years. The once nice neighborhood has since turned into a high crime area, leading to his wife being brutally attacked and murdered by street hoodlums. The rabbi then unleashes a monstrous “death wish” upon the criminal element in the form of his Golem: an unstoppable sludgernaught capable of melting itself down to ooze through pipes, drainage, bathroom plumbing, and whatever else necessary to kill those responsible.

Charles Bronson would have played a street-wise cop who grew up in this neighborhood sent to investigate the mysterious murders of these petty criminals, leading to an inevitable clash with the Golem and its elderly master.

Alas, this Golem would never come to life, and the movie world is lesser for it.

Today’s computer effects would make bringing the clay creature to life rather easy; not so back in the day when practical effects were still king. Cannon kept balking at the budget, which wasn’t exactly huge but definitely above the cost of the company’s typical low-rent production. A project like this couldn’t have come at a worse time since Cannon’s financial situation was turning dire. Haggling over the effects budget prevented the film from ever getting off the ground, and within a few short years Cannon’s money woes would put the company out of business.

Producer Menahem Golan supposedly maintained ownership of the screenplay until the day he died. So, somewhere out there, that script is just sitting around gathering dust waiting for some enterprising producer to get his hands on it and cast Jason Statham in Bronson’s role.

As tragic as Cannon’s demise was and along with it any chances of ever seeing a Charles Bronson monster movie, had the company not undergone a monetary meltdown, around the same time we also would have also been sullied by a Dolph Lundgren-less sequel to Masters of the Universe that would have cast a professional surfer as He-Man, now living on Earth undercover as a professional football player, forced into battle once more against Skeletor, also in our world plotting evil in the guise of a flesh-faced corporate executive named Aaron Dark. I’m not sure if we should be thankful or disappointed that guaranteed slice of cinematic crapola never came into existence.

Still, the world was denied a Charles Bronson vs. a Golem movie. My sadness over it never getting to see the light of day ranks right up there with knowing we never got that Jean-Claude Van Damme as a park ranger battling Bigfoot flick from a decade ago either. But that’s another story for another day.

We still know very little about Prometheus 2, aside from the fact that Ridley Scott is directing and it will introduce a whole new breed of alien monsters. We haven’t learned much more today, but what we have learned is sure to make all the ladies swoon. And some of the guys, too. Like me. Read on!

In a video interview with MTV, Ridley Scott again remained tight-lipped about the impending sequel, though he did 100% confirm that it will mostly center on surviving characters Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and super-sexy android David (Michael Fassbender).

Once that head goes back on, [David] is really dangerous,” said Scott, when asked for details about Prometheus 2‘s plot. “But he’s also very seductive. So maybe he’ll persuade [Shaw] to help him put the head back.”

You can check out the full interview below, where Scott also talks about Blade Runner 2 and the inherent evil that is the entertainment press. Except us. Scott loves us. And we love him too.

The script for Prometheus 2 is written, and filming is expected to begin in the latter portions of 2015. It’s tentatively due out in theaters at some point in 2016, though nothing is set in stone.

Following in the tradition of Gus Van Sant’s acclaimed Elephant, this intense drama follows a bullied high school student’s descent into madness.

White Rabbit will be playing in the following cities with more to be announced: Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Detroit, and Miami.

The film made its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival and its North American premiere at the 2014 Catalina Film Festival, where it won Best Feature Film. It also won Best Cinematography at Chelsea Film Festival and Best Actor (Krause), Best Supporting Actor (Trammell), and Best Supporting Actress (Robertson) at the Boston Film Festival.

Synopsis:
Harlon (Krause) is a troubled teen who has been tormented by visions since his alcoholic father (Trammell) forced him to kill an innocent rabbit while hunting as a boy. Now that Harlon is a bullied high school student, his undiagnosed mental illness is getting worse. He begins to hear voices, and his imagination encourages him to carry out violent acts. Things begin to look up when Julie (Robertson), a rebellious young girl, moves to town and befriends Harlon. But when she betrays him, the rabbit, along with other imaginary comic book characters, taunt him into committing one final act of revenge.

Chainsaw Sally Getting Distro; Animated Series Moving into Pre-Production

Chainsaw Sally is one of my personal favorite horror characters. She’s sexy, she’s hilarious, and she’s brutal as hell. And now, Chainsaw Sally is getting distribution for her feature film and a green light on pre-production for her animated series.

Co-created by Jimmyo and April Burril (who also plays Sally), the fantastic Chainsaw Sally character has appeared in two seasons of her own web series as well as in the feature film. It’s the feature that will receive distro from Black Wolf Media with a 2015 release date. The release will be a double feature; in addition to Chainsaw Sally: The Movie, Black Wolf will release another Jimmyo Burril project, The Good Sisters, starring April Burril and Debbie Rochon.

Additionally, an animated version of Chainsaw Sally has been in the works for some time, and it’s now been announced that Bloody Bombshell Entertainment and Fatality Films have moved into pre-production on a Chainsaw Sally animated series. And honestly, this character is absolutely perfect for animation. The over-the-top blood and gore from The Chainsaw Sally Show will be even more extreme in cartoon form.

For more info on the release of Chainsaw Sally: The Movie/The Good Sisters, visit the official Black Wolf Media website, and for up-to-the-minute news on the animated Chainsaw Sally series, visit the official Bloody Bombshell website.

From the Press Release:
Bloody Bombshell Entertainment and Fatality Films have partnered with Some Folks Entertainment to secure a distribution deal with Black Wolf Media for a double-feature release of the films Chainsaw Sally: The Movie and The Good Sisters. Both films were written and directed by cult horror icon Jimmyo Burril.

Chainsaw Sally: The Movie stars April Burril as Sally and was originally released in 2004. Traumatized after witnessing the murder of her parents as a young girl, the film follows an older Sally as she grows up to be a serial killer. The Good Sisters, also starring April Burril alongside legendary scream queen Debbie Rochon, features the duo as practicing witches who hide their discretions from their neighbors, until a new neighbor threatens their practice with his own secret life.

Release dates will be announced in 2015.

This news comes ahead of a second announcement that Bloody Bombshell Entertainment and Fatality Films will be moving into the second phase of pre-production on Chainsaw Sally: The Animated Series this winter. Based on the original Chainsaw Sally film and television series, Jimmyo Burril returns as the creative force, and April Burril will be reprising her role of Sally. Rochon joins the cast as Blondie. The cast has already announced the voice talents of Christopher Judge (“Stargate SG-1″), Nicholas Brendon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), and Tristan Risk (American Mary). The series begins animation in early 2015 and will premiere later in the year.
