Ryan Gosling’s How to Catch a Monster Gets a New Title and Home Video Release

Reading that headline, you may wonder why there’s been no mention of a theatrical release for Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River (formerly How to Catch a Monster)…

Well, according to Variety, Warner Bros., who acquired the film back in May of 2013, has decided the mostly negative reviews Lost River received during this year’s Cannes Film Festival were enough to limit  the fantasy drama to a home entertainment release in April of 2015.

The film, which was shot in Detroit, stars Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan, and Iain De Caestecker. The script, written by Gosling, centers on a single mother swept into a dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town.

Production companies are Marc Platt, Phantasma Films, and Bold Films production. Producers are Platt, Gosling, Adam Siegel, Michel Litvak, and David Lancaster.

Though a domestic release date has yet to be set, we now have an international trailer for the next horror flick from director Marcus Nispel, Exeter formerly Backmask. Look for it to open overseas on January 15, 2015.

Gage Golightly, Brittany Curran, Stephen Lang, Kelly Blatz, Brett Dier, Nick Nicotera, Nick Nordella, and Michael Ormsby star. Kirsten Elms penned the script that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally release an evil spirit that starts to possess them one by one.

Synopsis:
During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it’s revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message… and that the real source of horror isn’t particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.

Paul Feig Promises Ghostbusters Reboot Will Be Scarier Than Original Film

I don’t think there’s any movie we’ve covered more in 2014 than the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, as news and rumors hit the net at a steady clip throughout the year. On tap for you today is perhaps the last bit of Ghostbusters news for 2014, so read on!

In a new interview with Empire, director Paul Feig revealed that he’s intent on his movie being the scariest Ghostbusters film to date, indicating that if he had his way, nobody under 17 would be allowed to buy a ticket.

I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest,” said Feig. “Katie Dippold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don’t want to hold back. The reason I do a lot of R-Rated comedies is that you want a movie to feel honest. But the Ghostbusters world doesn’t need that level of swearing. We’ll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-Rated, but I won’t. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it.”

Feig also talked more about the concept of the film, once again stating that it will have no direct ties to the original franchise.

I have too much respect for the original one [to do a sequel],” he said. “There’s also the feeling that once the world knows ghosts and has seen them busted on such a large scale, they run the risk of becoming pedestrian. There’s something fun about introducing our world, which has never seen ghosts to the phenomenon of ghosts. I love origin stories and to introduce new characters.”

Related Story: Peter Dinklage May Be a Vengeful Ghost in the Ghostbusters Reboot!

Several actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone, are reportedly interested in joining the cast for the all-female reboot, though Feig confirms that no decisions have been made.

Right now, honestly, there could be 50 Ghostbusters,” said the director. “I’m just waiting to get our first draft of the script together to go, ‘Who makes sense in these roles?’ If I put the list in front of me of people that have said they want to do it, talk about a Sophie’s Choice. When you do a movie like Ghostbusters, people get very interested.”

Expect much more in 2015, in regards to this hotly-anticipated project!

Home Video Release Will Give You Starry Eyes

One film you’ll be seeing on many ‘Best Of’ lists in the coming days is Starry Eyes (review), co-directed by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch. In February of next year, one of the year’s most critically acclaimed horror films comes home, and we’ve got the scoop for ya today.

Read on for full release details, and you’ll also find the box art below. The top image is the main art, while the one underneath is an alternate piece of art which will be found on the other side of the sleeve!

From the Press Release:

An aspiring actress finally gets a role to die for in STARRY EYES, “one of the most exciting independent horror films to come out in a long time” (Michele Galgana, Twitch). The nerve-shattering film comes to Digital Download, Blu-ray and DVD from MPI Home Video on February 3, 2015.

Determined to make it as an actress in Hollywood, Sarah Walker (Alex Essoe, Passion Play, Boy Toy) spends her days working a dead-end job, enduring petty friendships with other struggling artists and competing actors, and going on countless casting calls in hopes of catching her big break. After a series of strange auditions, Sarah lands the leading role in a film from a mysterious production company. But this opportunity comes with some bizarre conditions that will transform her both mentally and physically into something beautiful … and altogether terrifying.

From the producer of Cheap Thrills and Jodorowsky’s Dune, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch’s STARRY EYES is an occult tale of ambition, possession and the true cost of fame.

In addition to Essoe, the cast includes Noah Segan (Looper, Brick, The Picture of Dorian Gray), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers, Cheap Thrills, Compliance) and Amanda Fuller (The Brittany Murphy Story, Cheap Thrills).

Entertainment Weekly’s Clark Collis called STARRY EYES “a skillful combination of occult thriller and Cronenbergian gruesome-fest. Essoe gives a star-making performance.” “One of the best horror films of the year. … Brilliant and brutal,” said Meredith Borders of Badass Digest. “Terrifying,” said Time’s Michael Roffman. “If David Lynch and David Cronenberg came together to craft a gory, psychological mindbender, it might be STARRY EYES.”

Special features on the Blu-ray and DVD include commentary with writer-directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (who previously teamed on Absence) and producer Travis Stevens; 10 deleted scenes; a music video by the film’s composer, Jonathan Snipes; Alex Essoe’s audition video; a behind-the-scenes photo gallery, and the theatrical trailer.

Why Don’t You Play in Hell? Dated for Home Video Release

One of 2014’s most batshit crazy genre films heads home right at the start of 2015, as Drafthouse Films has made a date with Sion Sono’s Why Don’t You Play in Hell?. Read on for all the release details!

From the Press Release:

A renegade film crew becomes embroiled with a Japanese crime gang feud in Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, an outrageous actioner that also pays thrilling tribute to classics of the yakuza genre. The latest wild epic from writer-director Sion Sono comes to Digital Download, Blu-ray and DVD on January 27, 2015, from Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM). The extras-filled discs have SRPs, respectively, of $29.93 and $24.99.

Master filmmaker Sion Sono (Love Exposure, Cold Fish) describes his frenzied, gleeful new masterpiece as “an action film about the love of 35mm.” Based on a screenplay he wrote nearly 15 years ago, Why Don’t You Play in Hell? is among Sono’s very best work, as his trademark excess and outrageousness are infused with an affection for the previous century of Japanese cinema. This is Sono with his talent and unique vision completely unleashed.

“A twisted valentine to moviemaking and the disappearing medium of 35mm film.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap

Ten years ago, the Kitagawa yakuza clan attacked the Muto yakuza clan at Muto’s own home, only to have Muto’s wife fight back. This unexpectedly left the Kitagawa clan in shambles, with their top hit man Ikegami wounded and Muto’s wife in prison. Despite the carnage, the most unfortunate fallout from this attack is when Muto’s beloved actress daughter, Mitsuko, has her adorable toothpaste commercial taken off the air. Now, Ikegami seeks revenge, while Muto only has one desire: to have his wife return from prison to see Mitsuko star in her first movie.

Enter The F★★★ Bombers, an eager but untalented group of wannabe filmmakers whose dreams of making movies have come crashing down after 10 years of 8mm efforts. Circumstances have brought them to this fateful moment where they’ll be able to film – in 35mm! – the actual climactic battle between yakuzas in an over-the-top, blood-splattering epic for the ages.

Endlessly irreverent and wildly, hilariously visceral, Why Don’t You Play in Hell? is a Tarantino-esque ode to the yakuza films of yore and features an over-the-top, blood-soaked finale for the ages.

“A deliriously gaudy celebration of the decline of everything.” Anton Bitel, Sight & Sound

When filmmaker Sono started writing the script for this movie, it was the beginning of the digital age of filmmaking. While it’s now common to shoot and show commercial and independent movies digitally, back then, 8mm film was widely used by independent film groups like The F★★★ Bombers (yes, they really existed). Therefore, to the amateurs, 35mm films became the symbol of the professional movie. By having the yakuza shoot in 35mm, Sono makes Why Don’t You Play in Hell? an homage to cinema. The film also includes specific references to the work of Kinji Fukasaku, whose scores of yakuza films, including the monumental series Battles Without Honor and Humanity, greatly influenced Sono.

Why Don’t You Play in Hell? was an official selection at various 2013 festivals, including the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival Boston, the Nashville Film Festival and the RiverRun International Film Festival.

Special Features:
• Press conference with director Sion Sono
• 11×17-inch fold-out poster by comic artist James Callahan
• 24-page booklet
• Theatrical trailers
• Digital download

Great news for you cats out there who are looking forward to Adam Green’s latest directorial feature film, Digging Up the Marrow! Entertainment Weekly scored the latest one-sheet and release news!

Look for the flick February 20th in limited theatrical and also on VOD via RLJ/Image Entertainment.

Starring, written by, and directed by Adam Green and inspired by the artwork of artist Alex Pardee, the film stars Ray Wise (“Twin Peaks,” X-Men First Class), Will Barratt (Frozen), and a roster full of horror genre favorites and iconic artists all appearing as themselves.

When filmmaker Adam Green receives a package from a strange man (Wise) claiming he can prove that monsters exist, he and his crew are taken on a mysterious, fantastical, and terrifying journey into the shadows deep down under the ground below our feet. Digging Up the Marrow is a documentary-style film that blends reality with fantasy in a way that will leave even the most hardcore skeptics believing in the existence of monsters.

“DIGGING UP THE MARROW is the result of an incredibly rewarding four-year creative collaboration,” said Green. “It’s a very unique film that doesn’t neatly fit into any specific sub-genre that has come before it. We’ve been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response that MARROW has received at early screenings.”

The monsters in the film are vividly brought to life by visionary American artist and trans-media-artistry pioneer Alex Pardee. Under Green’s ArieScope Pictures, the film was produced by Cory Neal and was financed by Neal and Andrew Mysko’s Hacienda Film Co.

The 10 Coolest Horror Movie Toys of 2014!

$
0
0

The end of the year is a time for looking back on all the great (or awful) things that happened throughout the course of that year, and 2014 was a pretty damn solid one on the horror front. The movies, at least the independent ones, were exceptional, and the toys were just as awesome.

We’ve already talked about 2014’s best and worst horror movies so today, on the eve of New Year’s, we look back on the 10 coolest horror toys that this year brought into our lives. So let’s get on with the list because we know you’re itching to get the hell off the computer and start drowning out the year’s hardships with way too much booze!

superfreddy

1) NECA – SUPER FREDDY

It was almost impossible for NECA to top 2013’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusive, which was the very first action figure of Nintendo-style Jason Voorhees. But they damn sure tried with this past summer’s exclusive, bringing Elm Street 5: Dream Child‘s “Super Freddy” into their popular retro-inspired line. Measuring 8″ tall and with real fabric clothing, Super Freddy’s toy debut was limited to only 5,000 pieces worldwide, and the figures can still be purchased for decent prices over on eBay.

NECA Ultimate Freddy

2) NECA – 30TH ANNIVERSARY ULTIMATE FREDDY

NECA also released this self-proclaimed “Ultimate Freddy” action figure this year in celebration of A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s 30th anniversary. The idea was that the figure would be the definitive Freddy Krueger toy, and I must say that NECA more than delivered on that promise. Measuring 7″ tall and featuring an alternate head as well as Tina’s skinned face and the infamous tongue phone, this is indeed the ultimate Freddy action figure, worthy of being called the best of all time.

nesjason
3) NECA – NES JASON VOORHEES

2014 was the year that 8-bit Jason Voorhees had his moment in the sun with last year’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusive from NECA kick-starting a massive resurgence of interest in the slasher icon’s most oddball incarnation. One-upping themselves, the company gave NES Jason the retro treatment earlier this year with this Toys R Us exclusive, which became one of the most sought-after horror toys of the year. These were incredibly hard to find in stores, which made the desire for them that much stronger. You’ll have to head over to eBay to grab one if you couldn’t find one in your local store.

New Look at Gore Verbinski’s BioShock

Just to rub our noses in the fact that we’ll probably never get the BioShock movie we have all been craving, a new batch of concept art from the unproduced flick has surfaced over on Comic Book Movie.

In case you’ve forgotten how this all sunk to the bottom of the drain, the site also has a quick history lesson…

“In 2008, Gore Verbinski (The Lone Ranger) was hired by Universal Pictures to direct a live-action film based on the popular BioShock video game series. The screenplay was written by ‘Penny Dreadful’ creator John Logan (Skyfall). Verbinski wanted to make the film R-rated and with a budget of $200 million. That’s an unheard of budget for an R-rated film, and Universal voiced their concern over it when a year later Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, which was another R-rated film, struggled at the box office. When Universal requested Gore slash the budget to $80 million, he decide to pass as the film’s director and only stayed on as a producer. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was then hired to direct, but in 2010 BioShock creator Ken Levine stepped in and pulled the plug for good. Levine didn’t think Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was a good match for BioShock.”

Check out the artwork below from conceptual illustrator Kasra Farahani (Thor).

Things have been kind of quiet when it comes to the two new projects we’re really excited for from director Neil Marshall, his remake of Troll Hunter and the new Dracula tale The Last Voyage of the Demeter, but that changes today.

Arrow in the Head caught up with Marshall, who clued them in on the status of both flicks.

“These projects are very much alive. It’s that thing where, at some point, something will click into place and it’ll happen. You kind of got to stick with them as long as you can. I’m still very, very passionate about doing Troll Hunter and Last Voyage of the Demeter. They’re great projects. I’m sticking with them, so fingers crossed we’ll get to see them one day.”

Pertaining to Demeter

“Yeah, I’ve got a good twist on it. It could be a really awesome project, very great. It’s very scary.”

Stay tuned!

And we end 2014 on a really sad note as actor Edward Herrmann has passed on. He may be known to most people for his recent work in the television series “Gilmore Girls,” but for horror fans he’ll forever be remembered for his stint in 1987’s The Lost Boys as Max, Lucy’s (mother of Michael and Sam) love interest.

That wasn’t his only appearance in the genre as he also appeared in Death Valley, My Boyfriend’s Back, The Skeptic, The Shaft, Here Come the Munsters (as Herman), and most recently in Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s remake of The Town that Dreaded Sundown.

His manager has reported that the Emmy-winning actor passed away at age 71. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest condolences to Herrmann’s many friends, his family, and his constituents.

You will be missed, sir. Thank you for all of your contributions.

Edward Herrmann
